Shot of Tru’s apartment block 1. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY. (
Tru is asleep under the duvet. She
throws it off her, and smiles. There is a knock at the door)
TRUComing
(
she walks into her living area, there
is another knock on the door. She opens the door to a Party Blower being blown
in her face by Harrison, who is also holding a balloon)
HARRISON (
incoherently,
the Blower still in his mouth)
Happy Birthday!
TRUWhat?
HARRISON (
still
incoherent)
Happy Birthday!
TRUNo, I’m sorry, I still can’t quite…
(
she takes the balloon as he comes
inside)
HARRISONOh you heard me. Two is all you get.
Listen, I know how you love your birthday and all, but I got some other things
to do today. Oh, and your gift? In the works, not here yet. And Dad, he’s in Omaha, and he sends his love
TRUNo he doesn’t, he forgot again. But thank
you for lying. And what are all these “things” you have to do today? I thought when
Dad went out of town, you got a day off
HARRISON (
looking
in the fridge)
Oh yeah, but not today. Check it out, he
wants me to talk to a guy who might have seen something about someone that
could help out a guy. I dunno…it’s pretty big stuff. Hey, so what’s the plan
for the festive B-Day?
TRUWell, I figure I’m a 23-year-old with a
mystical gift and a credit card, so I’m gonna treat myself to something special
HARRISONMaybe some hot dogs, huh? It’s looking a
little thin in here, Tru
TRUThere’s this jade necklace that’s been
calling my name, which is much less creepy than what usually calls my name
HARRISON(
he holds up a packet of hot dogs, triumphantly)
Yeah…jewellery…hmm, you women think us guys
notice stuff like that. We don’t
TRUOther guys notice jewellery.
You
just don’t. You know what? It’s time for me to get this day started, so…
(
she starts to push him out of the door)
HARRISONDon’t push! You know what? I’m taking these
(
he waves the packet at Tru, and she
blows him a kiss)
Cut to:
Shot
of Hudson University campus grounds 2. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY. (
Tru enters the class and walks over to
Avery)
TRUHey Avery
AVERYHey Tru
TRU (
to
the cadaver Avery is working on)
Hello Mr. Gorenstein
AVERYHappy Birthday! I love that necklace, is
that new?
TRUWhy, yes it is. A little treat from me to
me. I’m glad you noticed
AVERYI did. But the guys won’t, they never
notice that stuff. And besides, everybody’s all distracted by the engagement
TRUWhat? Who’s engaged?
AVERYJensen and Lexi
TRULexi, right. He mentioned her but I didn’t
know they were that serious
TYLER (
walking
over)
Well, it was all very impulsive
AVERYAh, Tyler’s in love with love. His diary is
going to be full tonight!
JENSEN (
coming
in)
Hey!
TRUHey, congratulations
JENSENThank you
TRUShe’s getting a great guy
JENSENThanks
AVERYShe is. I hope she knows it
JENSENShe does, she’s very excited. Although, I
didn’t know everybody else was gonna be this excited
TYLERWe’re living vicariously
AVERY
Exactly. I mean, none of us have anything
going on. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a guy naked
(
They all look at each other, there’s a
silence)
JENSEN…okay…
Cut to:
Shot

Shot
of the City Morgue, NIGHT 3. INT. Morgue. NIGHT. (
Tru steps out of the lift. The
maintenance guy walks into the lift as she gets out)
MAINTENANCE GUYHey. Nice necklace
TRUThank you
(
she walks down the corridor a few
steps)
Davis?
(
it’s eerily silent)
(
She walks further down the corridor
and into the sign-in room, everywhere is in darkness)
Davis?
(
suddenly the light flick on to reveal
the room packed with people, wearing party hats, cheering and yelling
“surprise!”. At the front, Harrison and Davis are standing together, Harrison
has a Party Blower)
TRUOh my Gosh! Who put this all together?
DAVISHarrison and I arranged it. He was supposed
to put a deposit down on a nicer place, but…that didn’t pan out
(
he gives Harrison a look; Harrison blows the Party Blower in his face)
HARRISONWell look, there was a little hiccup in the
money situation, but look, this way I get to set up your gift right here. Come
look, come here
TRUWhat?
(
she follows him over to the side of
the room)
HARRISONPinch yourself. It’s not a dream
TRUOh…it’s…a hot tub
HARRISONYeah! Don’t get too excited, it’s only
rented for one night
TRUDavis, you let him
bring this here?
DAVISI like the bubbles
(
Tru laughs)
HARRISONJust wait and see how it rocks the party,
okay?
TRUYeah
HARRISONWe need to get this thing up and running
(
he kneels down beside the controls.
The plug socket sparks, causes the lights to go out)
DAVISHe must have tripped a circuit breaker. Let
me call the maintenance guy
HARRISONWait, wait, wait, don’t bother Doc. It’s a
lot nicer this way
TRUAmbiance!
AVERYTru!
TYLERHey, nice place!
TRUHey
AVERYYeah, it’s morbid and strange, but we are
happy to be here
(
she hands Tru a present)
TRUThank you. Oh, hey, come here, I want you
guys to meet…this is my friend and boss, Davis. This is Tyler and Avery from my
anatomy class
TYLERRight, we talked to Davis when he invited
us
DAVISOh, yeah, right, it’s nice to meet you
TRUOh, and this is my little brother Harrison.
Avery, Tyler
AVERYHi
HARRISON (
handing
her a drink)
Hi
AVERYHarrison, that’s a
good name. I like that
(
Tru smiles at them, Harrison fumbles
with his party hat and takes it off)
HARRISONThank you
TRUHey, did you guys see the hot tub? Apparently,
my brother has me confused with the cast of
The Batchelor HARRISONI do not…
TYLERI brought my swimsuit. Where can we change?
HARRISONFirst takers. Right, come with me
TRUDavis! I love my
party, thank you so much!
DAVISOh, yeah! Oh, you know, I got you a gift as
well, so let me go get it
TRUAwesome
JENSENTru! Hey, Happy Birthday
TRUHey
JENSENI don’t think that you’ve met Lexi
TRULexi, at last! Best wishes
LEXIOh, thank you. It’s all a bit of a
whirlwind right now, you know, I’m just kinda waiting for it to settle in
JENSENI don’t think I’ve ever been in a morgue
before, this place is absolutely fascinating
TRUJensen, there aren’t any bodies here
tonight, but feel free to look around
JENSENYeah? (
to Lexi) You wanna look
around? I swear to God you’re gonna love this
LEXIOkay, yeah. I just don’t wanna look at
anything in a jar
TRUHave fun
JENSENThanks Tru
(
Davis walks over, holding a wrapped
gift)
DAVISI don’t understand how they get it to look
so nice in the store, but…
TRUThey put it in a box first
DAVISOh…maybe I should put it in a…
TRUNo, don’t you dare!
(
she opens it eagerly)
It’s….hats?
DAVISYeah, it’s two hats…yeah, you know the
expression “wearing two hats” right?
(
Tru looks blank)
It symbolizes your two fields of endeavour.
One for med school and one for rewriting destiny here at the morgue
(he glances over at the doorway; Carrie
enters. Davis takes off his party hat quickly)
DAVIS (
cont’d,
embarrassed)
Carrie’s here…
TRUOkay, this is getting a little ridiculous.
Don’t you think? Come here
(
she grabs Davis and pulls him over to
Carrie)
Hi, Carrie
CARRIEHi, Happy Birthday
TRUThanks
(
Carrie looks at Davis, he doesn’t say
anything)
TRU Could you excuse me one sec?
CARRIESure
TRU (
turning
Davis away)
Hey Davis…ask her to stay
DAVISNo, you ask her to stay
TRUDavis!
(
she turns him back towards Carrie and
smiles at her)
DAVISCarrie, would you like to stay?
CARRIEI would love to
TRUGreat
(
she walks over to the hot tub. Tyler is in there alone)
TRUHow’s it going in there?
TYLERAh, I’m just embracing life. Is this safe?
(
they are distracted by raised voices,
they look over)
LEXII cannot believe you’d do this!
AVERYYou have to tell him the truth!
LEXIThis is none of your business
AVERYYes, it is, and if you won’t tell him, then
I will! (
Lexi grabs her arm) Ouch, let go of me!
(
Harrison wheels a cake in on a
trolley)
HARRISONHey, everyone gather round
AVERYYou have to tell him
HARRISONIt’s cake time
(
Tru isn’t sure who to listen to, then
she walks towards Harrison and the trolley)
TRUWow…
HARRISONHappy Birthday Tru
(
The plug socket sparks again, plunging
the room into complete darkness)
PARTY GOERWhat’s that?
DAVISIt’s just a circuit breaker
HARRISONHey, take advantage of it people. Nobody’s
gonna know who did what when the lights come back on
TRUOkay… (
she takes a deep breath and blows
out the candles. Everyone cheers)
VOICETru
TRUHarrison, is that
you?
HARRISONWhat?
DAVISTru, what’s going on?
VOICEHelp me…
[Flashes of the day’s images as it
rewinds]
4. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY. (
Tru sits up in bed)
TRUNot what I wished for
[Fade to Black]
[Opening Credits]
[Repeat flashes of images of the day
in sequence]
5. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY. (
Tru, dressed, puts on her jacket and
walks into the kitchen)
TRUDon’t settle in, Harry, I’m heading out.
Something happened and I don’t have a clue who it happened to
HARRISONWait, I thought your birthday was supposed
to be all about giggles and love for the people of the earth
TRUYeah, I had that birthday yesterday
HARRISONYou had a replay on your birthday?! Ohh…well,
is there anything I should do, or not do? Urm…did I…did I screw up?
TRUYou threw me a party, which was a really
sweet thought actually
HARRISON (
pleased)
Well give it up for the brother!
TRUJust because you’re my brother doesn’t make
you “the” brother. And this time, please don’t throw me a surprise birthday
party at the morgue, especially with a rented hot tub, which does not count as
my gift by the way
HARRISONOh…wait…I threw you a party at the morgue?
TRUIt doesn’t matter, just cancel the whole
thing. It kinda wouldn’t be a surprise anymore. Lock up when you leave
(
she goes out, then leans round the
door)
Hot dogs, bottom shelf
HARRISONThank you!
Cut to:
Shot
of the City Morgue 6. INT. Morgue. DAY. DAVISSo you couldn’t tell anything from the
voice?
TRUIt was a loud whisper. It as, you know,
harsh, but I couldn’t even tell if it was a man or a woman
DAVISAnd it was dark. You have no idea who asked
you for help?
TRUThere were no bodies here for processing.
It wasn’t you or Harrison, you guys were right next to me
DAVISThen it was a guest!
TRUOh, great! Come for the cheese cubes, stay
for the death. I am cursed! Am I like Typhoid Mary? I mean, how many people
that I know am I gonna have to save?
DAVISWell, listen, maybe it wasn’t someone you
know, maybe it was someone who came with someone you know
TRUOoh, aren’t you a bundle of bright side
(
they walk into the sign in room)
DAVISOkay let’s just think for a minute.
Who...who was there?
TRUYou mean, here. You, me, Harrison, Carrie,
friends from school, Jensen…
DAVISWait, Carrie was here?
TRUYeah, she came by and you asked her to stay
DAVISI did? Did she stay? Did she stay?
TRUYou were masterful
DAVISOh God, I hope she’s okay, I could never
live with myself if I knew I was responsible for her being here
TRUDavis, odds are
she’s fine. Let’s just look at everyone before we narrow it down, okay? All
right, Tyler was in the hot tub
[Flashback: Tyler in the hot tub,
the plug sparking]
And that was messing with the electricity,
so maybe it was him or the maintenance guy
[Flashback: the maintenance guy
getting into the elevator after Tru stepped out]
DAVISDid you say hot tub?
TRUAnd it was really dark so anyone could slip
and fall over by the rinse basin
DAVISThere was a hot tub here?
TRUYou know, and just before the lights went
out, Avery was having a huge fight with Lexi
[Flashback: AVERY: And if you won’t
tell him, then I will!]
DAVISOkay, who’s Lexi?
TRUJensen’s fiancée
[Flashback: Jensen and Lexi
arriving. TRU: Hey. JENSEN: I don’t think that you’ve met Lexi]
TRUIt looked like it might be about to get
violent. Lexi couldn’t shoved her, or strangled her. Avery was saying something
like, “If you don’t tell him, I will”. I think she’s the victim
DAVISHmm. Well it sounds like Lexi’s got a
secret and Avery knows about it
TRUI guess I’d better find out too
Cut to:

of busy street – DAY 7. EXT. Street. DAY. (
Harrison walks down the street alone,
when he passes Jack)
JACK (
friendly)
Harrison!
(
Harrison stops, sighs, and turns)
JACK(
cont’d)
Look at you, man! You look great! Robust.
Like a man who’s been taking care of himself
HARRISONSo my continuing to be alive isn’t
bothering you?
JACKOh, you mean because it runs counter to the
plan of the universe and every day you’re setting in motion consequences that
can only be damaging to the entire human race? Now why would that bother me?
HARRISONLater, Jack
(
turning round, he rolls his eyes)
HARRISON (
quietly)
Ass
JACKLucky Broad
(
Harrison slows again)
JACKLucky Broad, Kentucky Rascal, Better Off
Sailing. Races 5, 6 and 7. Oh, and Rascal’s a long shot, so bet big
HARRISONWhat are you doing, man? I haven’t made a
bet in months
JACKWhy not? There’s no rule against profiting
from a rewind, Harrison. You know, Tru could make you a millionaire if she
wanted to. It breaks my heart to see the way that girl treats you
HARRISONThat is so sweet, you remembered those
names just for me
JACKNo, I remembered them for me. Good deeds
don’t pay enough to live on, my friend. But hey, if you’re not interested,
forget I said anything
HARRISONAlready did, man. Already did
8. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY. TRUAvery
AVERYTru! Happy Birthday
(
Tru hugs her)
You must really like your birthday
TRUI’m just glad to see you, that’s all. So,
what’s with the commotion?
(
she points over to where Jensen is
standing, surrounded by other students)
AVERYOh, you’ll never believe it. Jensen and
Lexi got engaged
TRUReally? Wow, I haven’t met her. What’s she
like?
AVERYOh, she’s…good. I mean, she’s crazy about
him, so I guess that that’s good
TRUHuh. Well that was wishy and at the same
time washy. That’s not like you Avery, you usually lay it all out there
AVERYI know. I love that about me. Yeah, I don’t
know. I…I guess I like her fine, it just all seems a little fast
TYLEROh, it’s all terribly romantic
JENSENMorning
TRUJensen, congratulations. You know what? I’m
taking you guys out for a congratulatory lunch. Right after lab, over at Café
Geneva. All of us, plus Lexi, it’ll be my chance to meet her
JENSENThat’s amazingly generous of you, Tru. I’ll
call Lex, I’m sure she’d love to come
AVERYYeah I’m in, I love their desserts
TYLERI’m shaking hands with a small intestine,
can we hold off on the food talk?
AVERYThey have Key lime pie
TYLERI do like Key lime pie
(
he looks at the intestine he’s holding
and grimaces)
9. EXT. Street. DAY. (
Harrison is talking to a cab
driver)
HARRISONSo you’re sure it was our client you
dropped off at the airport?
CABBIEYeah, sure I’m sure. He was late for a
flight. He was talking to his girlfriend on the cell phone the whole time;
she’s already at the airport. So she’s completely ticked off. In fact, she’s so
angry, right, he’s promised her to fly her to the Caribbean right there, just
cause she’s mad. I mean, lucky broad to find a sucker like that guy
HARRISONLucky Broad…
CABBIEYeah, anyway, I drive like a madman, I get
him there on time, he still doesn’t give me a decent tip. So yeah, I remember
the guy
HARRISON (
walking
away)
Lucky Broad…
CABBIEIs that it?
HARRISONOh yeah, that’s it
CABBIEYou don’t want me to sign something?
HARRISONNo, no, no, that was great
10. INT. Anatomy Class. DAY. TRU (
going
into the hall on her cellphone)
No, lab’s still going, I’m just ducking
into the hall. But the point is, I’m too soon. Whatever Lexi’s secret is, Avery
doesn’t know it yet. I got Jensen to invite Lexi to a lunch so I can work on
her, and watch them together. I’m hearing birds, where are you anyway?
Cut to: DAVISI’m hiding behind a tree, I’m watching
Carrie buy coffee
Cut to: TRUWhat?! Davis, that’s stalking!
Cut to: DAVISNo it’s not, it’s surveillance. I wanna
make sure she’s not in danger
Cut to: TRUDavis, we have no
reason to believe that she’s involved in this
DAVIS (
v.o.)
Uh-oh…
Cut to:
Davis, he is watching Jack walk over to Carrie DAVISI gotta…I’m gonna have to call you back
JACKCarrie Allen? I’m Jack Harper, I used to
work at the morgue with Tru and Davis. They’ve said such nice things about you
CARRIEWell, they’re good people
JACKThat they are, that they are. Anyway, I
just wanted to say hi and put a face with the name
CARRIEWell that was very nice of you to introduce
yourself. I’m sure I’ll see you around
(
Davis watches, as Carrie sits down
with her coffee, and Jack walks away. Davis cuts in front of him)
DAVISExcuse me…what was that?
JACKDavis! I was just
introducing myself. I’m a friend of a friend
DAVISStay away from Carrie. Stay away from her,
okay?
JACKDo you have a personal stake in this, Davis? (he gasps, mockingly) Is this an affair of the heart? That’s adorable! It is
DAVISI would protect anyone I saw you talking to
JACKFunny, I was talking to my landlady this
morning, I didn’t see you lurking around then. I just hope you know what you’re
getting into. See you around, Doc
(
Davis dials on his cellphone)
DAVISTru, everything has just changed
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in
sequence]
11. EXT. Street. DAY. DAVISDo you not get it, Tru? Jack is hanging
around. He wants to stay close to make sure she dies again. You’ve got to get
back to the morgue!
Cut to: TRUDavis, I want to,
but I can’t right now. I’ve got to find out what Lexi’s secret is. You’re gonna
have to handle Carrie yourself until I get back
Cut to: DAVIS (he sighs in frustration)
Look Carrie is gonna die if we don’t find
out about her past. You know, what is the motive, who is the killer?
Cut to: TRU
You’re right, we should do that. So here’s
an idea, we could get Harrison. He follows people for a living, he could watch
her while you research her past. Just, hang on
(she puts him on hold and dials Harrison)
Cut to: Harrison at the Track
HARRISON
Can I get $2 to win on…
(his cellphone rings)
Bosses, huh? They never seem to leave you
alone…
(he thinks for a second, then cuts the
call off)
Cut to: TRU
Look, I can’t reach him, he must still be
on assignment
Cut to: DAVIS
Listen, you gotta…I just can’t do this on
my own
Cut to: TRU
Yes you can do this. Look, just talk to
her. Find out if anyone would have a motive, okay?
Cut to: DAVIS
But…I…I…
Cut to: TRU
Avery was in danger at my party, Lexi was
furious. I’ve seen people look like that before, Davis. I’ve gotta stick with
this
Cut to: DAVIS
Okay, just get here as fast as you can,
okay?
(Carrie is getting up from her table
behind him)
Cut to: TRU
Okay
Cut to: Davis, following Carrie as she walks away
12. INT. Café Geneva. DAY.
LEXI
This was such a great idea, Tru. It’s such
a pleasure to meet you
TRU
Yeah, you too. The engagement was the
perfect opportunity. Jensen tells me you’re from right here in town?
LEXI
Yeah, I went to high school at Adams High,
just, you know, down the street. If those other girls could see me now, huh?
Engaged to a doctor! It’s almost a cliché
JENSEN
I’m not a doctor yet
TRU
And so you work here in town too?
LEXI
I’m a receptionist at a little insurance
company. But I’ll probably quit now, you know? (she laughs)
(the waiter pops open a bottle behind
her, and she jumps)
Champagne!
AVERY
None for me, I’m volunteering at the clinic
later
(Lexi looks at Jensen)
JENSEN (in
a low voice)
You probably shouldn’t
LEXI
Oh…yeah, um, no champagne for me either
(she smiles at Jensen)
JENSEN (to
the waiter)
Thank you
AVERY (loudly)
No champagne, Lexi? Are you pregnant?
TYLER (hissing)
Avery!
AVERY
Oh, I’m sorry…I do that a lot. I just kind
of say things, I didn’t mean to sound blunt or anything…but, seriously, are you
like an alcoholic, or…
(Lexi winces and looks at Jensen)
LEXI
Should we say?
JENSEN
Uh…yeah…they’re gonna find out soon enough,
so yeah, go ahead
LEXI (taking
Jensen’s hand and smiling)
We are pregnant
TYLER
Wow, that’s…uh…huh
TRU
I guess, congratulations
LEXI
Thank you
JENSEN
I just…I didn’t want you guys to think
that’s the reason we’re getting married, that’s why I didn’t…
LEXI
No, no, but it is why I said yes, so…(she
laughs loudly)
(Jack walks past the café window. Tru
looks over to him, suspiciously)
JENSEN
She’s an amazing girl, I mean I knew this
was where we were gonna end up, eventually
TRU
Excuse me, guys
(she gets up and walks outside)
13. EXT. Café. DAY.
TRU
What are you doing here?
JACK (pointing
to the menu in the window)
Look! They’ve got fondue! Do you ever have
one of those days when you just want fondue?
TRU
Stay away from my friends
JACK
Oh…oh, yeah, yeah I saw them in there. I
haven’t met everybody yet. Would you like to introduce me? No? Okay…
(he turns as if to go, then turns back
to her as if he’s remembered something)
Oh! This is some kind of birthday
celebration, isn’t it? I almost forgot, I… (he searches his pockets) I
wanted to get you one with some kind of death and resurrection imagery but they
didn’t have any, so…I got you a card with a picture of a cake on it
(he holds it up in front of her, then
he opens it. It reads: Happy Birthday Tru, love Jack)
TRU
Mmm. I think it’s time for you to leave now
JACK
Tru. You don’t want me to meet your
friends, you don’t want me to enjoy fondue. Are you embarrassed by me? ‘Cause
if you are, it would almost be enough to hurt my feelings
(he walks away, taking the card with
him)
Cut to: Shot
of the City Morgue
14. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis walks down the corridor,
practising what he is going to say)
DAVIS
Hi, Carrie. How are you today. You look
nice. It occurs to me that I don’t know a lot about your friends, by extension
enemies. (he sighs) This is such a … (he clears his throat) Carrie, um, I like
your…blouse…blouse…blouse?
CARRIE (off-screen)
Oh my God!
(Davis rushes into her office)
DAVIS
Carrie, what’s wrong?
CARRIE (at
her desk, breathing hard, in shock)
Nothing
DAVIS
I know we don’t know each other that well
yet, but please, just tell me
CARRIE
It was a situation that you’d never think
you’d find yourself in. An abusive marriage, with a problem drinker. But I just
kept hoping that things would get better
DAVIS
I’m so sorry
CARRIE
The thing that amazed me, is how much I
missed him, when he died
DAVIS
How did he…how did he die?
CARRIE
He drowned. He passed out in a bath tub, of
all things. The police came and they asked a lot of questions, and I slowly
started to realize that they thought I was somehow involved
DAVIS
Involved?
CARRIE
Yeah. He took these Thyroid pills and
afterwards nobody could find them, so somebody came up with this theory that
I…had spiked the bottle with sedatives, that I’d stolen from the hospital where
I worked
DAVIS
What happened?
CARRIE
Well they never found the pills, so
eventually the police just dropped the investigation. But his sister still
thought that I did it. I left the suburbs and I came here and I thought that I
was safe…until today
(she shows Davis two cards, which read:
“I know that you did it”)
DAVIS
“I know that you did it”. They both say the
same thing
CARRIE
I found one of them this morning, it was
actually rolled up into my newspaper on the front porch, and the other one I
found right before you came in. In my purse
DAVIS
I think that maybe that I can help you
15. INT. The Track. DAY.
(Harrison is watching the race)
ANNOUNCER
And Better Off Sailing and Happy Clam are
neck and neck, Lost Cause is closing in on them, but it looks like Better Off
Sailing may pull this off, people. This is unbelievable! It down to the final
stretch, here is…(Harrison bursts into cheers)…Better Off Sailing
in first, followed by Lost Cause, and Happy Clam in third
HARRISON
(to the room) I didn’t know! (to
himself) I did know
Cut to: Shot
of City Morgue
16. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru is on the phone, it’s ringing. The
door opens and Davis enters)
TRU
Davis. You weren’t
here and I couldn’t reach you. Listen…Lexi’s pregnant, that’s why Jensen’s
marrying her. And I think I know what the secret is
DAVIS
What?
TRU
This girl Lexi, she’s marrying Jensen to
make her way up in the world. So what could Avery find out that would derail
everything for a pregnant bride? Well, what if the baby isn’t Jensen’s? I mean,
it’s classic. She would be determined to keep that secret
DAVIS
No, I don’t think that’s what happened
TRU
Well, Avery’s volunteering at the clinic
this afternoon, and it’s just a theory but I bet Lexi came in for an exam, or
Avery saw her medical records, and so she knows about the baby’s father
DAVIS
Tru…
TRU
Anyway, I’m gonna go tag along as a new
volunteer, and maybe I can keep whatever happened from happening again
DAVIS
Tru!
TRU
What?
DAVIS
Carrie’s husband died a year and a half
ago, and she’s got a sister in law out in Rockville who blames her, and I think
she killed her. And Jack’s hanging around to make sure it happens again
TRU
Well, Jack’s been hanging around Avery too,
and they can’t both be victims, so he’s playing us
DAVIS
You assume that Carrie is the decoy? It
could’ve just as well been Avery
TRU
Let’s not do this Davis, please? I wish I
could investigate both options, I do. You’re just gonna have to handle this
DAVIS
Yeah, so you can run off and be with your
new friends
TRU
What?
DAVIS
I just don’t think you’re being objective
about this!
TRU
What, and you are? Look, I know that you
like her, and I know what it’s like to lose someone that you care about, but Davis, you’re just not being…
DAVIS
No, Tru, you can’t do this to me! You can’t
make this about poor funny little Davis who always loses it when a girl smiles
at him! This isn’t funny! This is serious! And I’ve gotta go protect this woman
myself? And if she dies because you weren’t there to protect her, I will
never…I’ll never forgive you!
(he turns his back on her and walks
out, leaving Tru looking bewildered)
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in
sequence]
17. INT. Clinic. DAY.
TRU
So, how long have you volunteered here?
AVERY
Oh, years. It’s something Jensen got me
into when we were both pre-med
TRU
You two have known each other a long time,
huh?
AVERY
Yeah, we used to, uh…well, we used to have
a lot of classes together
TRU
You used to go out?
AVERY
A long time ago
TRU
Well, what happened?
AVERY
Well we just became best friends, it’s
really a hundred times better this way
TRU
You take care of him
AVERY
Yeah. And he takes care of me. I mean, he
would take care of me if I let him. And that is my heart-to-heart limit for one
day, okay?
TRU
You got it. So, what’s that?
AVERY
This is the sign-in. It’s the people with
appointments
(Tru looks at the list)
Are you looking for someone?
TRU
I’m just trying to get a feel for
everything, that’s all
AVERY
Well, there’s a little filing today so we
should probably start here
TRU
So what are you gonna do?
AVERY
Uh, looks like some records just got sent
over, so I gotta sort these
TRU
Oh, I could do that too
AVERY
And spin plates and play the kazoo? Take it
easy, Tru, all right? You’re a superstar, but you do not need to save the world
TRU
I guess it just feels like that sometimes
(Avery picks up a file and is looking
at it. Tru peers at the name at the top)
TRU (cont’d)
Well, Alexandra Keely, that’s Lexi’s file,
Avery. You shouldn’t look at that
AVERY
I gotta go
TRU
No, wait, let’s talk about this
(Avery walks out of the room holding
the file)
Look, don’t, you can’t confront her
AVERY
You don’t know what’s going on
TRU
Assume I do
AVERY
Jensen’s being lied to
(she thrusts the file at Tru, who takes
it)
TRU
I know you wanna protect him, but there’s
gotta be a better way. Let’s talk to him together!
(Avery pushes through the doors and
rushes off. Tru is stopped by a young mother with her daughter)
MOTHER
Excuse me, do you know if there’s a sign-in
sheet, or…?
TRU
Yeah, over there. Excuse me
(she opens the door, but the corridor
is empty. She sighs, and looks down at the file. She opens it and reads)
Oh…
18. INT. Tru’s Car. DAY.
(Tru is driving and talking on her
cellphone)
TRU
Davis, I found out why
Lexi may have wanted to kill Avery. The secret isn’t that the baby isn’t
Jensen’s; it’s that there is no baby. I saw her medical records. She had a
uterine myoma and got a hysterectomy two years ago
Cut to: DAVIS
So she can’t be pregnant
Cut to: TRU
The whole thing was a scam just to get
Jensen to marry her. No wonder Lexi didn’t want that to get out
Cut to: DAVIS
What, so you have a new theory? God, you’ll
consider every point of view except mine
Cut to: TRU
Look Davis, I’m not trying to ignore you,
I’m trying to prevent a death
Cut to: DAVIS
Listen I gotta go Tru, I have an
appointment with the real killer
Cut to: Tru,
she hangs up the phone with a sigh
19. INT. House. DAY.
DAVIS
Thank you…for the tea. It’s very hot
VIVIAN
Well I’d do anything for the man who’s
gonna reopen my brother’s case
DAVIS
We don’t exactly reopen cases at the
morgue. We do like to educate ourselves about what happened. I understand that
your brother drowned in a bath
VIVIAN
Well that’s what she told everyone, but it
isn’t right. It doesn’t make sense
DAVIS
But he was a drinker, right?
VIVIAN
Well not so that he would pass out in a
tub. Plus they never found that bottle of pills. She destroyed it because she
knew they could link it to her
DAVIS
But surely, like, you know a small
prescription bottle could be thrown away…
VIVIAN
No. She killed him
DAVIS
Well, I’m sure that she’ll be punished, by
the universe, not by human hands, because that would be wrong
VIVIAN
No, Doctor, my brother was a good man. He
never laid a hand on her, and he never passed out in any bathtub. And don’t you
tell me about who dispenses justice. I know that no-one does, because I know
what she did
Cut to: Shot
of City Morgue
20. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis bursts into Carrie’s
office)
CARRIE
What’s going on?
DAVIS
You’re not safe here. Come on
21. INT. Davis’s apartment. NIGHT.
DAVIS
Come on in. I know its not much but it has
central air. Which is good because, uh, the morgue, when the a.c. breaks down,
sometimes I’m tempted to walk around naked and…
CARRIE (looking
at a plate on the table)
Oh, that’s beautiful
DAVIS
Yeah…I got these in, uh, in Mexico. But you can’t eat off them, because the glaze will cause severe brain damage. Would
you like a Fresca?
CARRIE
No, thanks…I like your apartment
DAVIS
Yeah
CARRIE
I feel so safe here. I’m embarrassed that I
showed you these in the first place. It’s probably just some neighbour kid
playing a joke
(she puts the bits of paper on the
table, Davis looks at them)
DAVIS
Yeah, I, uh, I don’t think so. But you’re
safe here. You’re okay here
CARRIE
I know
Cut to: Hudson University – NIGHT
22. INT. Dormitory. NIGHT.
(Tru is talking to Avery’s roommate)
TRU
She didn’t even come back here at all
today?
EMMA
Avery? No. But she called in
TRU
She did? Great
EMMA
Yeah, she said she was meeting up with her
friend Jensen, and his fiancée
TRU
Where? Did she say where?
EMMA
Um…Standard Diner. Do you know it?
(Tru rushes off)
23. EXT. Standard Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru’s car squeals to a halt outside
the Diner. She gets out quickly and runs towards the Diner. It’s in darkness,
but the door is open. She runs inside)
(As Tru enters, everyone inside shouts
“SURPRISE!” She looks around, stunned)
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in
sequence]
24. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
HARRISON
I knew you thought I’d cancelled it. I
wasn’t sure you’d get the message, but, uh…
TRU
I didn’t
HARRISON
Oh, well, you’re here, so obviously…
TRU
Did you see Avery?
HARRISON
Ooh, which one’s Avery?
TRU
Never mind. Excuse me
(Harrison frowns as she walks away, and
begins to mimic Tru)
HARRISON
“Thank you Harrison, what a lovely
surprise!” You’re welcome, Tru!
(Tru looks around the room, and notices
Jensen)
JENSEN
Hey. Happy Birthday again
TRU
Thanks. Um, have you seen Avery?
JENSEN
Uh, I don’t think Avery’s here yet
TRU
Where’s Lexi?
JENSEN
Uh, the bathroom, I think? Why, what’s up?
TRU
Look, I don’t wanna say this, but there’s
something I have to…tell you, and it’s not…
JENSEN
Tru?
TRU
I was at the clinic today, and Lexi’s
records were there
JENSEN
Yeah, I moved them over there. ‘Cause I
thought, with the baby it would be good for her to have the best care. What is
this about?
TRU
Well, I saw the records, and there’s
something she’s not telling you
JENSEN
Whoa…you saw the records?
TRU
Yeah, I was there with Avery, and we…
JENSEN
No, no, no, I don’t care. I don’t wanna
know what this is, all right?
(he begins to walk away, and Tru
follows)
Whatever you saw, it was private, if she
wants to tell me about it, then she’ll tell me about it
TRU
Jensen, she isn’t pregnant
JENSEN
What?
TRU
She had a uterine myoma. They performed a
hysterectomy. You needed to know
JENSEN
Thank you for deciding what it is that I
need
TRU
Jensen, she’s playing you. She just wants
to marry a doctor, and things are about to get… (Jensen has left) … bad
(Tyler walks up behind her)
TYLER
Loving the cheese cubes. Hey, what’s up
with Jensen? (he eats another cube) Hmm. Bold
(Behind them, Tru hears Lexi and Avery
talking in hushed voices)
LEXI
I cannot believe you’d do this!
AVERY
You have to tell him the truth!
LEXI
This is none of your business
AVERY
Yes! It is! And if you’re not gonna tell
him, then I will!
(Avery goes into the next room, and
Lexi follows her. Tru and Tyler watch through the glass window)
AVERY
Lexi, you have to tell him that you’re not
pregnant
LEXI
Look, shut up!
Cut to:
(Jack appears behind Tru and Tyler)
JACK
Oh…now it’s a party. Chick fight! Chick
fight! I love a chick fight! I’m coming to your birthday every year!
TYLER
Ah man…this is bad
Cut to:
AVERY
Lexi, he’s going to find out
LEXI
I know. I know he will. And when he does,
it’s all gonna be ruined
(Lexi starts to cry, and Avery hugs her)
Cut to:
JACK
Oh, this is even hotter than a chick fight.
But you see, the thing about this is, Lexi is clearly alive. And an
opportunist. And a big no-uterus-having cry-baby, but I really don’t think
she’s a killer
(he turns to walk away, then turns back)
Happy Birthday
(he turns round again and spies Harrison)
JACK (cont’d)
Harrison! Harrison, this is a great party, man. I knew you’d do the right thing with that money! You
know, getting everybody here (he walks away)
(Harrison turns round. Tru is
glaring at him)
HARRISON
Jack gave me the names of these horses and
I won, and I used the money for the party…but, I think that…I think he wanted
you here so…
TRU
Instead of somewhere else
25. INT. Davis’s apartment. NIGHT.
CARRIE
But can you even build a canoe out of
concrete?
DAVIS
Yeah, of course. With the correct
engineering you can. That’s how I met my wife actually…in one of those races.
Her team won, and then her team dumped my team in the water. I got a bacterial
infection but I didn’t mind
CARRIE
That’s actually very sweet
DAVIS
It was a long time ago, though. It doesn’t,
um…it doesn’t hurt to think about it anymore. You know? It’ll be the same with
you too
CARRIE
You’re already making it better
(Davis looks awkward for a few seconds,
then he leans down to kiss her. He moves away quickly, but Carrie sits up and
pulls on his tie, pulling him closer for another kiss. Suddenly, the door bangs
and they look up)
DAVIS
Did you hear that? There’s someone in the
hallway. Go…go hide in my room
(she disappears, Davis moves across
towards the hall, picking up a cricket bat. He raises it up, opens the door and
almost hits Tru with it)
TRU
Hey, whoa…Davis, you were right, it’s not
Avery and it never was. It’s Carrie and I am so, so sorry I didn’t listen to
you, I really am
DAVIS
That’s okay, you’re here now
TRU
Is she here? Is she safe?
DAVIS
Yeah, she’s in the other room. She’s safe
TRU
Any more notes? Did you find any other
suspects, besides the sister-in-law?
DAVIS
No more notes. And I don’t think the
sister-in-law would do it herself, I think she hired someone. And the notes… (he
stoops, picks them off the table and hands them to Tru) … are clearly an
attempt at blackmail gone bad
(Tru looks at the notes carefully)
DAVIS (cont’d)
I’m still not sure
[Flashback: Jack’s birthday card,
the words “Happy Birthday Tru, Love Jack”]
TRU
Whoa, Davis, stop. You know who wrote these
notes. They were both decoys. It wasn’t Carrie or Avery. The death is still on,
and it’s happening…in the morgue
DAVIS
But there’s no one at the morgue, so how
can it happen again?
TRU
Because someone is there. And he was there
on day one
DAVIS
Who?
TRU
Davis, the lights
didn’t go out because of the hot tub. The lights went out because the wiring is
bad, and the maintenance man is there right now
(she takes off at a run)
26. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(The maintenance man walks into the
dark, underground corridor underneath the morgue, and over to the electricity
supply. He puts his bag down. The wires around the metre are sparking. He opens
the cupboard and looks inside)
Cut to: Tru
opens the morgue corridor door and runs inside
Cut to: the
maintenance man at the cupboard. He looks at the wiring, and prods one with his
screwdriver. He begins to unscrew one of the screws
Shot of the corridor beneath his feet,
just behind him – a puddle of water
Cut to: Tru,
entering the dark corridor. She looks around, and, upon turning the corner,
sees him just about to connect the wires
TRU
No!
(The maintenance man takes a step
backwards. One foot is now in the water, as he reaches up takes hold of the
wires. Electricity buzzes and sparks, the maintenance man yells in pain as he
starts to shake, unable to let go of the wire he is holding. Tru runs up to him
as he buckles and falls to the floor, the wires still in his hand)
JACK (off-screen,
behind Tru)
It’s frustrating isn’t it?
TRU
Jack
JACK
You could save him, if you could get to
him. I know you know CPR. But those wires are live, Tru. Barbecue Tru
TRU
You say you’re on the side of good, and yet
you stand there, enjoying this
JACK
You think I’m enjoying this, George? Oh,
George isn’t talking. You knew that was his name, right? I don’t think you did.
But maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe it’s easier when it’s someone you don’t
know and care about
TRU
No, it isn’t
Cut to – Shot
of the city – NIGHT
Cut to – Tru’s
apartment block – DAY
27. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru lies in bed, awake, staring out of
the window)
28. INT. Morgue. DAY.
DAVIS
I’m sorry it’s a day late. You don’t have
to act surprised
(Tru opens the present, and takes out
two hats)
Did I tell you about the symbology? Two
hats, two jobs…It seemed clever at the time
TRU
Yes. And it’s a wonderful thought, Davis. But I’m starting to think I can’t handle med school and this
DAVIS
Tru. We were both wrong. It’s just that now
with Jack involved, it’s harder. He’s…he’s good
TRU
He’s better than good. He knows stuff.
Davis, Jack wasn’t at the party before the rewind, and yet he knew about Lexi
and Avery’s fight. And he knew enough to make Carrie look likely, too. How does
he know this stuff?
(Davis is silent)
Yeah, that’s what I thought. Thanks for my
hats, anyway
DAVIS
You’re welcome. Go on, get to school. Prove
you can do both
29. INT. Anatomy Lab corridor. DAY.
(Tru walks up just as Avery is walking
out)
TRU
Avery, hi
AVERY
Hey. Good party last night. I looked for
you after my little blow-up with Lexi, but I couldn’t find you
TRU
How’s Jensen? Have you guys talked?
AVERY
Yeah. I think I’m forgiven. But, you know,
you have to have your own conversation with him because we both looked at her
file
TRU
Right
AVERY
Even though you did do everything you could
to keep me from looking at anybody’s file
TRU
Avery, there’s no way I could have known
what was in there
AVERY
I know, but you did. And when you miss class,
you know what we talked about, like details, and who asked what questions. That
kind of thing
TRU
I…I didn’t realize that. Weird
AVERY
Yeah. It’s cool, I just wanted you to know
that I noticed. So…go, talk to Jensen
TRU
Okay
(Tru walks into the lab. It’s empty,
except for Jensen standing over by the window. She walks over to him slowly)
TRU
I’m sorry
JENSEN
It’s fine
TRU
I told you about what was in someone else’s
records. That’s not fine
JENSEN
Lexi’s the one that lied. She…wanted to
marry a doctor. And she settled for me because I think I might be the last guy
in the country who marries a girl just because she gets pregnant
TRU
I like that you’re that guy
JENSEN
I guess I’m happy that I found out when I
did, you know?
TRU
You don’t look happy. You look like you
miss her
JENSEN
No. I don’t think that’s it, I think that…I
think I miss the girl that I was hoping she was. You know, witty, charming,
that cared about what it is that I did but also had her own stuff, you know,
things that she cared about, friends that she cared about
TRU
You’ll find that person. I mean, we all
have to believe that there’s someone out there…the right person, for us
JENSEN
Sure. There’s the right person for
everybody
30. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis is walking down the
corridor towards Carrie’s office. She comes out of her office, and walks
towards him)
DAVIS
Oh hey, you’re leaving?
CARRIE
Oh no, I can talk for a minute. Um, I
wanted to thank you for last night. I was really glad that you were there. I
was scared and you made me feel safe. And that’s a good thing
DAVIS
Um, about the, uh, the…uh, the kiss thing?
I felt like I was crossing a line there…
CARRIE
Davis, that was a
good thing too
DAVIS
Really?
CARRIE
Yes
DAVIS
Oh
CARRIE
I’m sorry, I have to run
DAVIS
No, yeah, no problem
CARRIE
You should know that I thank whatever force
in the universe brought me to you
Cut to: Shot
of the city – NIGHT
Cut to: Shot
of a bar – NIGHT
31. INT. Bar. NIGHT.
(Jack is sitting alone at the bar, with
two drinks in front of him, waiting for someone. He looks up. Carrie Allen sits
down next to him)
CARRIE
I like this place. It is a lot better than
the dive where we first met
JACK
Anything is better than that place. Stale
peanuts and watered down liquor. I got you a beer
CARRIE
Thank you. Long day yesterday?
JACK
About forty hours. But it was easy; all I
had to do was a little misdirection. How about you?
CARRIE
Not bad. I got to know Davis a little
better. A funny little man
JACK
And?
CARRIE
And he believes every word that I say.
