PROLOGUE
Tru walks down the corridor towards her
apartment. Inside one of her neighbour’s apartments, dance music plays loudly.
She frowns and walks on, into her own apartment.
She opens the door to see Harrison and
two of his buddies sitting in her living room – it’s a complete mess
TRU
Harrison!
(
He can’t hear her, the music is too
loud. Tru walks quickly over to the stereo and switches it off. Harrison looks up)
TRU
What the hell is going on?
HARRISON (
laughing, nervously.
He gets up and walks over to Tru)
This, guys, is Tru! My kind, caring, and
did I mention beautiful, sister
TRU
(
To his buddies) Nice to meet you
guys
(
To Harrison) Explain!
HARRISON
Ah, well, you know how you and I depend on
each other?
TRU
Harrison
HARRISON
You know the old saying,
mi casa es su
casa
TRU
Harrison!
HARRISON
How about the biblical quotation that
states: “Let she without sin, cast the first…”
TRU
Harrison, just tell
me what happened
HARRISON
My landlord. A real stickler for the whole
“pay the rent” thing
(
Tru looks down at the floor beside the
table: Harrison’s things are packed up in bags)
TRU
You got evicted?!
HARRISON
Which brings us back to
mi casa
(
Tru looks down at the floor again,
there is water coming from somewhere)
TRU
What’s that water?
HARRISON
Oh, yeah, you might not wanna, er…
(
Tru walks round the table to the sink.
It’s full to the brim with water)
TRU
What is that? (
She turns on him,
furiously) Luc just fixed the sink this morning! What did you do?
HARRISON
Nothing!
(
Harrison’s buddies are laughing, Harrison joins in. Off Tru’s look, he hastily stops laughing)
Guess you had to be there…
TRU
Why couldn’t you have just gone to
Lindsay’s?
HARRISON
Uh, because, telling your new girlfriend
you’ve just been evicted isn’t very effective pillow talk
(
Tru raises her eyebrows at him, as if
to say, “So?” Harrison gets it)
Okay! We’re out. Looks like you need your
alone time
(
Harrison’s buddies get up)
BUDDY 1 (
in
the background)
Man, you said she was cool
TRU
Thanks
HARRISON
Lets go, boys. I can take a hint
(
He picks up his bags)
Zachary…
(
He throws a bag to Zachary)
HARRISON (
cont’d,
as they are walking out the door)
Oh, by the way, there’s some more beer in
the bathtub if you want to…uh…
(
Tru points out the door)
Yeah. Right. Yeah
(
He disappears, closing the door)
1. INT. Food Market. DAY.
(
Siren wails in the distance. A young
boy 10-12, holding a skateboard, is looking at the chocolate bars.
He
chooses one, slips it into his pocket. He looks around. Michael Mancuso enters
the store. He stands by one of the shelves to look at something, and then walks
over to the counter)
MICHAEL
Open up the register
CLERK
Excuse me?
MICHAEL
You heard me, open it up!
(
He moves his hand in his pocket,
pulling his jacket up so the clerk can see it’s the shape of a gun. The clerk
immediately realises its serious)
CLERK
Hey, there’s nothing. There’s nothing here.
The cash just went out an hour ago
(
The skateboarding boy looks up, scared)
MICHAEL
Then give me what you have! Now!
(
The boy makes a run for it, knocking
over a display of cola bottles. Michael is distracted; he looks over to the
boy. As he is looking away, the clerk reaches under the counter and pulls out a
gun, pointing it at Michael. He reaches into his own pocket. The clerk shoots.)
[CREDITS]
3. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
DAVIS
So you don’t mind?
TRU
I am perfectly capable of prepping a body
solo. Besides, you don’t look so hot
DAVIS
A word of advice, stay away from the shrimp
sandwich at that new deli across the street
TRU
Ouch
DAVIS (
holding his belly)
You know actually I’m, um...if you’ll
excuse me…
(
He hurries off in the other direction)
3. INT. Morgue crypt. NIGHT.
(
Tru is prepping a body. She puts
on surgical gloves)
TRU
Hey there
(
She looks over the body. It’s the man
from the general store)
I’m Tru. And you are?
(
She reaches into his pocket and pulls
out an ATM receipt. It says: 10:18am, and “Insufficient Funds”, the figure -$432.18)
In the red
(
She glances down at him. He has a
bloody gunshot wound to his chest)
How about a name…
(
She about to walk over to find out his
name, when he grabs her arm)
MICHAEL
Help me
[Flashes of the days images as they
rewind]
4. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(
Tru wakes up on her sofa. Luc is
fixing the sink)
LUC
Bad dream?
TRU
Yeah. Bad dream. What am I doing out here?
LUC
Well, the plan was you, me, wine and a
movie. The reality was you, wine, passed out on the couch
(
Tru smiles, sheepishly)
Anyway, sorry if I woke you. I wanted to
take care of this
(
He gestures to the sink)
[Flashback: the sink overflowing
with water. TRU: Luc just fixed the sink this morning, what did you do?]
TRU
You’re fixing it
LUC
Yeah. Like you’ve been asking me to all
week
(
She blows him a kiss, and puts on her
shoes)
LUC (
shaking
his head, not happy)
And she’s off
TRU
Yeah, I’m meeting Lindsay for breakfast
LUC
On a weekday? Doesn’t she work?
TRU
She’s taking a sick day
LUC
How do you know that? You just woke up
TRU
Because it’s a girl thing
LUC
Mm-hm. Aren’t you gonna change first?
TRU (
putting
on her jacket)
These clothes are fine. Besides, I’m
running late
LUC
Okay. All right, here’s the thing. I don’t
even mind your crazy excuses about where you have to go all the time, what I do
mind is you feel like there’s a part of your life you have to keep hidden from
me
TRU
No, it’s nothing. Look, I’ll make it up to
you tonight. Just bring coffee
(
She kisses him, and dashes out)
5. INT. Corridor. DAY.
(
Tru is on her cellphone. Brian comes
out his apartment with his guitar)
BRIAN
Hey Tru
(
She holds up a hand to silence him. He
stands, strumming his guitar)
HARRISON (
voice-over)
Hello
TRU
Hey Harrison, it’s me. I’ve got some bad
news
HARRISON (
voice-over)
Give it to me
TRU
You’re gonna be evicted today
Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah tell me something I don’t know
(
He is sitting outside on the sidewalk,
in his dressing gown, eating cereal, surrounded by bags, boxes and a goldfish
bowl with a goldfish in)
TRU (
voice-over)
Meredith’s still in rehab, why don’t you
just crash at her place?
HARRISON
Or what about yours?
Cut to: TRU
Been there. Hated that
Cut to: HARRISON
Ah, a dreaded rewind day. So what did I do?
Cut to: TRU
Poker with the boys, food on my couch,
flood in my kitchen
Cut to: HARRISON
Tru, I am shocked. Shocked! I would never
do anything…whoa…wait, was I winning?
Cut to: TRU
Bye, Harr
(
She turns to Brian, who is strumming
his guitar)
I’m kind of in a…
BRIAN
This will just take a sec. I’m writing this
sock and I can’t get the last lyric. Okay, check this out… (
He strums)
(
sings) I’m living out loud, I’m
driving right through, will you meet me there…
TRU
(
sings) Will you be true?
BRIAN
Ah, nice little pun there. “True”
TRU
No, that’s not what I meant…
BRIAN
That’s not quite what I’m looking for…more
of a…
(
He looks up, Tru has already walked
away)
All right…
6. INT. Morgue. DAY.
DAVIS (
on
cellphone)
So if the body asked for help, why didn’t
you come into work first and do a little background?
Cut to: TRU
(
outside ATM)
Because he asked before I got anything to
go on. No name, no personals. I’m lucky I got the ATM receipt
(
She looks up at the wall, it reads 342
North Clark Street)
[Flashback of Tru looking at the ATM
receipt: TRU “And you are…?”]
TRU (
looks
at her watch)
He should be here any minute
DAVIS (
voice-over)
You got nothing else?
Cut to: DAVIS sitting in the Morgue office, tucking into a shrimp sandwich
TRU (
voice-over)
Bullet wound to the chest
Cut to: TRU on
the street
Wait, Davis, put the sandwich down
Cut to: DAVIS
Why?
Cut to: TRU
Davis, it’s a
rewind day. You want details or you wanna just trust me?
Cut to: DAVIS
Done
(
He throws the sandwich into the wastebasket)
Cut to: TRU
Okay look, here he comes. I’ll call you
later
(
She follows him into the alley, up to
the ATM. He inserts his card and his pin code.)
[Flashback of Tru holding the ATM
receipt. TRU: “In the red”]
(
The ATM beeps and the receipt comes
out. Michael takes it, looks at it, then hits the ATM machine)
TRU
ATM can really ruin your day, huh?
(
Michael stares at her, ignores her and
walks off. Tru waits for a second, then follows him)
(Shot of the street length, Tru
following Michael)
(
A man walks past Tru, throws a sweet wrapper
into a nearby trashcan and misses. Tru looks behind her, but the man walks on
without picking it up.)
(
Tru follows Michael for a while
longer, until he turns into “Community Health Service” building)
7. INT. Health Center. DAY.
MICHAEL (
to
the Front Desk Nurse on the desk)
Hey. Can I just go on through?
(
Front Desk Nurse nods and buzzes the
door)
Thanks
(
Tru enters the building and tries to
follow after Michael)
FRONT DESK NURSE
Can I help you?
TRU
Yes, you can. There’s a man who just went
in before me
FRONT DESK NURSE
Are you a relative?
TRU
No, but…
FRONT DESK NURSE
Nobody goes back there unless they have an
appointment. Do you have an appointment?
(
Tru is silent)
Didn’t think so. I’m gonna have to ask you
to take a seat
TRU
And I’m gonna have to ask you to bend the
rules. Otherwise, you’re gonna have a situation on your hands
FRONT DESK NURSE
I think I already do
(
She picks up the phone and dials. Tru
sighs)
8. EXT. Street outside Health Center. DAY.
(
A security guard shows Tru out)
TRU
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(
She sighs, looks around. Then she sees
Michael come out the back of the Health Center. She follows after him again)
(
Her cellphone rings)
TRU
What’s up, Harrison?
Cut to: HARRISON (
in Meredith’s apartment, the alarm wailing)
I went to Meredith’s like you said…
TRU (
voice-over)
So you broke in?
Cut to: HARRISON
Well I don’t have a key. And nobody told me
she installed this insane security system! So what’s the password?
Cut to: TRU
(
she can’t hear properly, the alarm is drowning Harrison out)
What?
(
A woman runs past her, trying to get
to her car before the traffic cop sticks a ticket on it)
WOMAN
Wait! Wait! I’m coming…
(
He sticks the ticket to her windshield)
WOMAN
Oh, thanks a lot!
(
His dispatch radio sounds: “We’ve got
a robbery on the corner of Clarke and Fourth. Nearest unit respond immediately”)
(
The cop runs off in the opposite
direction)
HARRISON (
voice-over)
The password! What is the stupid password!
(
Tru sees Michael going into the Food
Market)
TRU
Sorry Harrison, I’ve gotta call you back
Cut to: HARRISON
What?! (
frustrated) Ohhh….argh!
(
He turns around, and notices two
security guards standing at the doorway)
Oh, fellas. It is so good to see you!
(
He pats each of them on the shoulder
with his hands. Then he bolts down the corridor)
SECURITY 1
Hey, kid!
9. INT. Food Market. DAY.
(
The skateboarding kid puts a chocolate
bar into his pocket. Michael enters, looking around. He looks over at the clerk
– he’s busy doing a crossword. We see what Michael was doing the first time
round: slipping a hairbrush into his pocket to act as the shape of a gun.
Michael sighs, and walks over to the counter. Tru walks into the store)
MICHAEL
Just give me the money
CLERK
There’s nothing here
(
The kid looks up)
MICHAEL (
moving
the hairbrush in his jacket so the clerk can see the shape, it looks like he
has a gun in his pocket)
Now!
TRU
Don’t!
(
Michael is distracted, looks over at
Tru. The clerk takes advantage of his distraction, taking his gun from under the
counter and pointing it at Michael. The kid runs out of the store, knocking
over the display of cola bottles. The clerk is distracted now, looking over at
where the kid has run to. Michael knocks the gun from the clerk’s hand, it
rolls into the corner. They both dive for it, struggling to grab hold of it.
The gun fires. The clerk falls to the floor)
TRU
Oh my God…
MICHAEL
I’m sorry
(
Tru kneels by the clerk)
TRU
Hey…
MICHAEL
I didn’t mean to…
TRU
Hey, can you hear me?
MICHAEL (
sobbing)
Oh God, I’m sorry
TRU
Talk to me…hey, hey, hey…come on…
(
He doesn’t respond. Tru takes out her
cellphone and dials 911)
MICHAEL
No, please, no…
TRU
Stay with me…
(
The clerk’s eyes close)
No, no, no…
MICHAEL
Is he…?
(
Tru looks up at him)
MICHAEL (
cont’d)
No… (
Dissolves into sobs)
(
Tru looks down at the clerk. His head
twists towards Tru)
CLERK
Save me!
[Flashes of the days images as it
rewinds for the second time]
10. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(
Tru sits up on the couch)
TRU
This can’t be happening…
LUC
Bad dream?
TRU
More like a recurring nightmare
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they
rewind]
11. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
LUC
Well sorry if I woke you, I wanted to take
care of this
TRU (
putting
her shoes on)
Right. Thanks. Hey, sorry about crashing
out last night. I swear I’ll make it up to you
(
She kisses him, then puts her coat on)
LUC
And she’s off. Where you going this time?
TRU
The library
LUC
Doesn’t open till 12
TRU
Right, I know, I’m going to the university
library
LUC
Oh. For what?
TRU
For a work thing. Are we playing 20
Questions?
LUC (
slightly
annoyed)
No. Just two
TRU
Look it’s no fun for me either, but I
really gotta go. Oh, and don’t worry about the sink. I don’t think its meant to
be fixed
LUC
I can handle it
TRU
I didn’t mean…I know you can…thank you. Bye
LUC (
to
himself)
Anytime
12. EXT. Harrison’s apartment. DAY.
(
He’s sitting in his dressing gown in a
deckchair on the street, eating breakfast, on his cellphone)
TRU (
voice-over)
No Harr,
mi casa es mi casa
HARRISON
So you’re asking me to take up residence in
a building where all my neighbours are dead?
Cut to: TRU in
the corridor in her apartment block
I’m asking you to hang out at the morgue
until I figure something out
BRIAN
Tru…
(
She holds up a hand to silence him)
HARRISON
Whoa whoa wait let me guess, rewind day?
TRU
You could say that. Twice
HARRISON
Ooh. So what did I do?
TRU
Trashed my place, got busted breaking into
Meredith’s apartment
HARRISON (
voice-over)
Impressive
TRU
Just go to the morgue, okay?
HARRISON (
voice-over)
Later
TRU (
hanging
up)
Hey, Brian
BRIAN
Hey, I’m writing this song, see if you can
help me out okay? Check this out
(
sings) I’m living out loud, I’m
driving right through, will you meet me there…
TRU
(
sings) Or are we through
BRIAN
You want me to rhyme “through” with
“through”? That’s creative…
(
Tru walks away)
No, no, no…how about…
(
He looks up, Tru is gone)
13. INT. Morgue. DAY.
DAVIS
It rewound again?
TRU
Yes
DAVIS
Well, that’s unexpected
TRU
I mean, I thought I finally understood how
this thing works. Someone asks for help, I save them, happily ever after. But
this time…
DAVIS
Someone else died
TRU
Yeah. Because of me
DAVIS (
reaching
into fridge for his sandwiches)
Yeah, but because of you, someone lived
TRU
Yeah, a guy committing a felony. Explain to
me how that’s fair. What, can anybody just ask for help now? Maybe there’s a
homicidal maniac who’s in need of some assistance
DAVIS
Come on, Tru
TRU
Look, I’ve been through this twice, and each
time, someone different died. Which one am I supposed to save now?
DAVIS
Both
(
Tru glances up at the clock. It reads
10:10am)
TRU
Great. Well I know where one of them is
gonna be in eight minutes
(
She turns back; Davis is tucking into
the sandwich)
Oh…about the sandwich…
14. EXT. ATM Machine. DAY.
(
Tru is standing by the machine,
looking at her watch)
TRU
Right…about…now
(
Michael walks around the corner, into
the alley. He walks up to the ATM and inserts his card)
TRU
Aren’t you…? Hey, I’m Lauren. I work at the
Rose Food Market
MICHAEL
Sorry, no
TRU
Well, just in case you were planning on
stopping by, you should know we’re closed for inventory today
(
Michael looks at the receipt, and hits
the ATM)
TRU (
cont’d)
Doors are locked. Registers are empty
MICHAEL
Listen lady, I don’t know you, I don’t know
the Rose Food Market, and I don’t know why I care if you’re doing your
inventory today
(
He puts the receipt into his jacket
pocket and walks away. Tru waits for a second, then follows)
(
Tru sees the man coming who missed the
trashcan on Day 1. She moves the trashcan a few inches into the street. She
walks on, turns around to watch him. He throws his sweet paper and it lands in
the trashcan)
15. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(
Davis is working on a body)
DAVIS
Muscle-tone appears slack. Large, fatty
liver. Could be cirrhosis
HARRISON (
off-screen)
Ooh woo! I thought I had it bad!
DAVIS
Harrison, what are
you doing here?
HARRISON
Following orders. Tru told me to crash here
DAVIS
Crash?
HARRISON
Yeah. So where’s my room?
DAVIS
Room? We don’t…We don’t have rooms. We have
drawers
HARRISON
Yeah, whatever
(
He puts his holdall on the ground)
I’m easy. You know, I haven’t seen you
since my sister’s party. We never really got a chance to chat
DAVIS
About?
HARRISON
Hello? We’re the only two people who know
what she can do. Hey. Any luck convincing her to play the ponies?
DAVIS
No. Because I believe her gift provides her
with a higher calling
(
Harrison picks up a surgical
tool from the plate)
Do you mind? These are sterile!
(
Harrison waves one around in
front of him)
Well they were sterile
(
Harrison drops it onto the plate
and wipes his hands)
HARRISON
So, rewind day, huh?
DAVIS
Multiple
rewind day
HARRISON (
walking
over towards the office)
Multiple. Oh, yeah yeah, she told me
(
Pause)
First
(
Davis looks annoyed. Harrison looks into the office)
Ooh
(
Shot of the shrimp sandwiches on the
side. Harrison picks one up)
You gonna eat this?
DAVIS
No, it’s got…It’s all yours
HARRISON (
tucking
in)
Mm. Thanks, D!
16. INT. Health Center. DAY.
(
Michael enters)
MICHAEL (
to
the desk Front Desk Nurse)
Hey
(
The Front Desk Nurse buzzes the door
and Michael goes through. Tru enters, looking sick)
FRONT DESK NURSE
Can I help you?
TRU
Yeah. I don’t feel too good
FRONT DESK NURSE
Oh, I’m sorry. Do you have a doctor case
worker here?
TRU
No…
FRONT DESK NURSE (
getting out a form)
Okay, let me just get you set up
TRU
Right now…I’m gonna be sick, ma’am, to my
stomach
FRONT DESK NURSE
Oh…down the hall, to your right
(
She buzzes the door. Tru goes through.
She walks through the appointments area, she can hear Michael)
MICHAEL (
off-screen)
You should be able to, more than anybody
else! Now you’re telling me you can’t help me?
PATRICIA
I just…
(
Tru can see Michael and a doctor in
one of the appointment rooms, through the window. She watches)
MICHAEL
Can you get me the medicine?
PATRICIA
No
MICHAEL
Why not? You’re telling me you can’t help
me? Will you get me the medicine?
PATRICIA
I can’t get you the medicine. I’m not
authorized…
MICHAEL
That’s it?
(
He opens the door and walks away)
I don’t have any more time
PATRICIA
Mr Mancuso! Mr Mancuso, wait!
TRU (
whispering
to herself)
Mancuso
STEPHANIE
Hi, Patricia? Stephanie Brandis
PATRICIA
Oh, Stephanie. It’s nice to meet you.
Finally we get another case worker around here
FRONT DESK NURSE (
behind Tru)
If you’re finished in the bathroom, a
doctor will see you now
TRU
You know what, I’m feeling much better
(
She hurries out of the door Michael just
left from)
Cut to: Shot
of Michael walking down the street
Cut to: Tru
coming out of the Health Center, following him
(
Tru’s cellphone rings)
17. EXT. Street. DAY.
TRU (
on
cellphone)
Hey, a little busy right now
Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
You have got to get your brother out of
here
(
Behind Davis, Harrison is looking in
the drawers at the bodies, then closing them)
Ten minutes ago, I found him locked inside
of the crypt!
Cut to: TRU
Look, it’s not a good time Davis
Cut to: DAVIS
And now he’s asking me how much a corpse
goes for on the black market
Cut to: TRU
Just keep him occupied, I’ll be there as
soon as I can
(
She hangs up)
Cut to: DAVIS (
hanging up)
Not soon enough
(
He turns around; Harrison is leaning
over another body)
HARRISON
Why don’t you ask
me for help? Come
on. Hook a brother up
(
His stomach rumbles audibly)
Hey dude. What the hell was in that
sandwich, man?
18. EXT. Street. DAY.
TRU
Mr Mancuso!
(
He doesn’t hear her, he walks into the
Food Market)
Mr Mancuso!
WOMAN
Wait! Wait, wait, I’m coming!...Thanks a
lot!
TRU (
to
the cop)
Somebody’s robbing that store!
(
DISPATCH RADIO:
We’ve got a
robbery on the corner of Clark and Fourth. Nearest unit respond immediately.)
19. INT. Food Market. DAY.
MICHAEL
Then give me what you have. Now!
COP (
pulling
his gun)
Freeze. Put your hands in the air
MICHAEL (
scared)
Oh dear God…
COP
Drop your weapon on the floor
MICHAEL
I don’t…I don’t have any
TRU
It’s in his left pocket
COP
Empty it
MICHAEL
This is all a big mistake
(
He reaches into his pocket and pulls
out the hairbrush. Tru looks shocked)
(
The skateboarding kid makes a run for
it, knocking over the cola display)
(
Tru watches out of the shop window, a
horn honks as the kid tries to run across the road. A cab screeches its brakes,
but it hits the boy. The boy flies onto the windshield, bounces off the bonnet
and lands on the road in front of the cab)
CAB DRIVER
Oh my God! I didn’t see him!
(
A crowd starts to gather)
He came out of nowhere! I swear…
(
Tru pushes her way through the crowd,
to get to the boy)
TRU
Somebody call an ambulance!
COP
1180, Orange and First. I need an EMS team immediately
(
DISPATCH RADIO “
Copy that,
they’re on their way”)
(
Michael pushes through to crouch next
to Tru)
TRU
Forget the ambulance
MICHAEL
Is he…?
TRU
Why didn’t you listen to me? I told you not
to go in there!
BOY
Please…
(
Tru looks around for the voice, then
down at the boy)
BOY
Help me
[Flashes of the days images as it
rewinds for a third time]
20. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(
Tru sits up on the couch, panting)
TRU
You’ve gotta be kidding me!
LUC
What? You’ve been trying to get me to fix
this sink for weeks
TRU (
scrambling
up, putting her shoes on)
Something tells me it wants to stay broken
LUC
Whoa…that’s the fastest I’ve ever seen you
get ready. That’s the fastest I’ve seen
anybody get ready
TRU (
grabbing
her jacket)
Sorry. I’ve really gotta run
LUC
Where?
TRU (
grabbing
her bag)
Visiting Meredith
LUC
Thought she wasn’t allowed to have
visitors?
TRU
Only immediate family
LUC
If it was something else, you’d tell me,
right?
TRU
Of course
21. EXT. Harrison’s apartment. DAY.
(
He sits on a chair, eating cereal, in
his dressing gown, on the cellphone)
TRU (
voice-over)
Go crash at Lindsay’s!
HARRISON
Telling your girlfriend you’ve just been
evicted isn’t very effective…
Cut to: TRU walking
down the corridor
Pillow talk, my ass!
Cut to: HARRISON
Ooh, nice language! You having one of those
days?
Cut to: TRU
No, more like three of them, so just be a
polite guest, she’ll understand
BRIAN
Tru!
HARRISON
Three… (
He lets the phone fall from his
ear as he drinks the milk from his bowl) Sweet
TRU (
hanging
up)
Writing a song?
BRIAN
Yeah, how’d you know?
TRU
Because you’re holding a guitar. I’m sort
of in a hurry
BRIAN
Right, okay. Check this out
(
sings) I’m living out loud, I’m
driving right through, will you meet me there…?
TRU
(
sings) Because I’m stuck in
traffic…
(
She hurries down the corridor)
BRIAN (
calling
after her)
That doesn’t rhyme!
Cut to: Shot of the Morgue building, and front door
22. INT. Morgue. DAY.
DAVIS
Three times?
TRU
And each day, because of me, someone
different dies
DAVIS
Well, it’s not your fault, Tru. Besides,
look on the bright side
TRU
And what’s that?
DAVIS
Well it sounds like each day you’re getting
a little bit more information, another clue. So now you know the guy in the
store really didn’t have a gun
TRU
So he’s desperate. I get it. But so am I. I
mean, what if this day never stops repeating? If every day I wake up and make
the same lame excuse to Luc, and then call my brother in some lame attempt to
keep him out of trouble, and then my neighbour with his lousy song? I can’t
keep doing this!
DAVIS
Well maybe your job isn’t as obvious as we
thought
TRU
What do you mean?
DAVIS
Perhaps someone is supposed to die today.
And stay that way
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as it
rewinds]
23. INT. Morgue. DAY.
TRU
I can’t deal with this. I am not in the
business of deciding who is or isn’t supposed to die
DAVIS
How do you know?
TRU
Don’t say that. You know what everyone else
my age is deciding right now? “Grad school or get a job?”, “Order in or go
out?”, and “Do I really need a phone that takes little pictures?”
DAVIS
People always say things happen for a reason.
Well that reason is fate. And fate by definition is immutable. Maybe you’re
here just to make sure that…
TRU
Fate gets its way? How do I know what it
wants?
DAVIS
It’ll tell you. Eventually
TRU
And until then?
DAVIS
You gotta trust your instincts
(
Tru walks out of the office, picking
up a white lab coat on the way)
DAVIS
Back to the ATM?
TRU
No. Something went down at the clinic, and
whatever it was, that’s what made him desperate enough to hold up the store
24. EXT. ATM Machine. DAY.
(
Michael inserts his card and presses
the pin code in. The machine beeps, releases the receipt. Michael looks at it,
then hits the ATM. He walks out of the alley and round the corner, down the
street. He passes the man who throws his sweet wrapper towards the trashcan, he
misses and it falls onto the sidewalk)
25. INT. Health Center. DAY.
(
Tru enters, wearing the white lab coat
she took from the Morgue)
TRU
Hi. I’m Stephanie Brandis, one of your new
case workers
[Flashback: STEPHANIE: “Hi,
Patricia? Stephanie Brandis”, PATRICIA: “Oh, Stephanie”]
FRONT DESK NURSE
Of course. Through the door and to the
left. Patricia Norris is expecting you
(
She hands her a file)
TRU
I thought she might be. Thanks
(
The Front Desk Nurse buzzes the door
and Tru goes through)
26. INT. Patricia’s Office. DAY.
PATRICIA (
shaking
Tru’s hand)
Thank God. I’ve been asking for a new case
worker round here for months. Come on in
TRU
Actually, I already started flipping
through some of the files. I’m halfway through the Mancuso case
(
They sit down)
PATRICIA
Awful, isn’t it? And she is the sweetest
child you will ever meet
TRU
She?
PATRICIA
Elizabeth. Her
parents have tried everything, but with a case like this… (
She shakes her
head)
TRU
I haven’t had a chance to finish reading
the file
PATRICA
Elizabeth has acute
viral cardiomyopathy. She had an echovirus that came out of the blue last year
TRU
What’s the course of treatment?
PATRICIA
The doctor has her on a daily
antiarrhythmic but the medicine’s just a band aid. Ultimately, she’ll need a
heart transplant
TRU
And is she on the list?
PATRICIA
Yeah, pretty far down. And with O-neg
patients like Elizabeth, the chances of a suitable heart becoming available
are…
TRU
Slim to none
PATRICIA
Exactly. Mr Mancuso lost his job six months
ago; his insurance is on its last leg so…
(
Michael walks up the office and enters)
MICHAEL
I need to talk to you
PATRICIA
Michael, we were just discussing your
daughter’s case. The is Stephanie Brandis, a new case worker
TRU
Nice to meet you
MICHAEL
Look, I need more Amiodarone. We ran out
and Elizabeth’s breathing is very heavy today. I went to the pharmacy, but the
insurance denied me. You know they were gonna charge me $500 for two pills? (
He
laughs incredulously) I don’t have $500!
PATRICIA (
standing
up)
I’m aware…
MICHAEL
Look I need you to get me that medicine! I
promise I’ll pay you back
(
Patricia closes the door to the office)
PATRICIA
Mr Mancuso, calm down…
MICHAEL
She’s in pain!
PATRICIA (
gently)
I’m not a pharmacist; I’m certainly not
authorized to give away medicine
MICHAEL
I thought you were supposed to help me
TRU
Just give us some time; we’ll see what we
can do
MICHAEL
I don’t have any!
PATRICIA
Mr Mancuso…
MICHAEL
No
(
He walks out)
PATRICIA
Mr Mancuso, wait!
MICHAEL
Don’t have any more time
PATRICIA (
at
the door)
Mr Mancuso… (
She sighs) I can’t
imagine it getting worse for him
TRU
I can
(
She hurries off after him)
27. INT. Health center. DAY.
(
The real Stephanie Brandis stands at
Reception)
STEPHANIE
Look, I swear to you I’m Stephanie Brandis
and I have a meeting
FRONT DESK NURSE
Don’t make me call security
28. EXT. Street. DAY
TRU
Michael… (
She runs to catch up with him)
Look, Mr Mancuso, I understand your daughter’s in trouble, but Patricia can
help you, why don’t you wait for her call?
MICHAEL
My daughter needs her medicine now
TRU
Well she’s not gonna get it if you do
something stupid
MICHAEL
What the hell are you talking about?
TRU
Look, please don’t tell me you’re looking
for some quick way to get cash which might even include holding up the nearest
store you can find
MICHAEL
Leave me alone
TRU
Michael, don’t do this!
MICHAEL
You got any other options?! She’s 11 years
old. The one thing my daughter needs is the thing I can’t give her. My God, I look
at her friends, and I wonder why their hearts work and hers doesn’t. Why she
got sick, and they didn’t. I can’t fix her, but I can make her feel better. She
needs her medicine. She needs it now
(
He turns to go)
TRU
I’ll get it for you! Just…Look, give me an
hour. And no charges, but promise me, you won’t go into that store
MICHAEL
An hour?
TRU
And your address
MICHAEL
820 South Normandy, apartment two
TRU
Amiodarone, right?
MICHAEL
Yeah, 50 milligrams
TRU
Got it. Now go sit with your daughter, I’ll
be right there
MICHAEL
Thank you
(
He walks away. Behind Tru, the cop is
writing out a parking ticket)
WOMAN
Wait! Wait, wait, I’m coming!
(
Tru reaches into her pocket for some
money, and slips it into the parking metre, turning the dial)
WOMAN
Thank you. Thank you so much
(
DISPATCH RADIO: “
We’ve got a
robbery at the corner of Clark and Fourth, nearest unit respond immediately)
(
The cop rushes off. Tru turns to look
into the window of the Food Market. The clerk is standing doing his cross word.
The skateboarding boy exits the store, walking off down the street)
29. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(
Davis is writing a prescription)
DAVIS
Go to the pharmacy on the corner and ask
for Timothy. If she’s having shortness of breath, this should do the trick. But
with acute cardiomyopathy she’ll eventually…
TRU
I know, need a transplant
(
Davis signs the prescription)
But you’re sure he’s just gonna give me
$500 worth of medication?
DAVIS
He owes me. I set up his grandma with a
really nice coffin last month
TRU
You know, it looks like you were wrong, Davis. No one had to die today, not one person
DAVIS
Well I’m glad I was mistaken
(
Tru goes to leave, her cellphone rings)
TRU (
on
cellphone)
What’s up, Harry?
Cut to: HARRISON at Lindsay’s apartment
Well, I took your advice and went to
Lindsay’s
TRU (
voice-over)
Uh-huh
Cut to: TRU walking
through the Morgue
HARRISON
(voice-over)
And yeah, you said to be a polite house
guest
TRU
Uh-huh
HARRISON (
voice-over)
Well, I tried
Cut to: HARRISON (
smoke filling the air behind him)
I thought I’d be nice and cook a little
something-something for dinner and uh, yeah…
(
Camera pans out to reveal a smoking
frying pan on the cooker)
I might have started a small fire
Cut to: TRU
And you’re calling me why?
Cut to: HARRISON
On the off chance the day boomerangs again,
I need you to say two simple words: Take out
Cut to:
TRU
Good luck, Harry
(
She hangs up. Davis comes out of the
crypt)
Davis, you okay?
DAVIS (
holding
his belly)
Kind of not, no. Word of advice, stay away
from that…
TRU
Shrimp sandwich! Yeah, my bad. I forgot to
warn you, I’ve been kind busy. Sorry!
DAVIS
It’s okay. Priorities. Go
(
The lift dings. Tru walks into it,
watching Davis running down the corridor in the opposite direction)
Cut to:
Tru
walking down the street
Cut to: Tru
walking up to apartment two. She knocks on the door. No one answers, so she
enters
30. INT. Mancuso apartment. DAY
TRU
Michael?
(
she wanders further in)
Michael? I have the medicine
(
she shakes the pill bottle)
Michael?
(
She dashes through the corridor, into Elizabeth’s bedroom, worried now. Elizabeth is lying in bed, her parents sitting by her)
Is she…?
(
They are both crying)
MICHAEL
She’s gone
TRU
I should have been here sooner…
MICHAEL
The medicine wouldn’t have saved her life
LINDA
Thank you for trying
TRU
I’m so, so sorry
LINDA
There’s a…there’s a plan for everyone
(
Tru walks slowly closer to Elizabeth. Linda dissolves into tears)
MICHAEL (
softly)
Come here…
(
He moves her away from the bed, embracing
her)
She…she’s in a better place
(
Tru walks closer to Elizabeth, looking
at her, wondering if she will ask for help)
We did everything we could. You know we did
everything…
(
Tru turns around to leave)
ELIZABETH
Please…
(
Tru turns around. Elizabeth’s head
moves to look at her)
ELIZABETH
Help me
[Flashes of the days images as it
rewinds for a fourth time]
31. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(
Tru sits up, panting, on the couch)
LUC
Bad dream?
TRU
I wish
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they
rewind]
32. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY
TRU
You don’t need to bother fixing that. Trust
me
LUC
Are you okay?
TRU
No
(
She grabs her jacket and puts it on)
LUC
Can I help?
TRU
No
LUC
And she’s off. Just out of curiosity, where
are you rushing off to?
TRU
Luc, I could make up some excuse you’d see
right through because you know me. And I love that. But for us to work, you
need to know everything, and for that to happen, you just need to wait a little
bit longer
LUC
Well obviously we have a lot to talk about,
Tru. But I can see that you’re stressed about something, so let me help with
that
TRU
You know, you’re right, maybe you could
help me with something. Harrison’s been having a really bad couple of days, and
he might come by here, would you mind just trying to keep him out of trouble?
LUC
Okay
TRU
Thank you! (
she kisses him) I’ll
talk to you tonight (
she dashes out)
LUC (
to
himself)
Yeah. We’ll see
33. INT. Corridor. DAY.
(
Tru rushes down the corridor, but not
fast enough. Brian comes out his apartment)
BRIAN
Tru!
TRU (
turning
round)
(
sings) I’m living out loud, I’m
driving right through, will you meet me there, so we can start anew
BRIAN (
impressed)
Whoa! Tru! That’s my song! I think we’re on
the same kinda wavelength or something here…
(
Tru dashes away)
You wanna start a band?
34. INT. Morgue. DAY.
DAVIS
You must be getting so sick of explaining
this to me
TRU
It’s like each time the day repeats, it
gets worse. You should’ve seen this family
DAVIS
Okay let me get this straight. Again. You
saved the father
TRU
Yeah. So he could watch his daughter die.
How is that okay?
DAVIS
Yeah but Tru, without you, they both
would’ve…
TRU
I know, but I’m still stuck in the same
day, what am I doing wrong?
DAVIS
Well maybe you’re doing everything exactly
right
TRU
Davis, you can
theorize all you want
DAVIS
All I’m saying is maybe everything was
meant to lead you directly to this little girl
TRU
So, what, I’m supposed to somehow keep
Michael away from the store, and get his daughter the help she needs?
DAVIS
And don’t forget, the help that he thinks
she needs is useless. The medicine isn’t gonna save her life
TRU
I have to get her to the hospital
(
She grabs her jacket and bag and goes
to leave, then turns back)
Oh, and Davis, the sandwich in the fridge,
hand it over
DAVIS
What?
TRU
Now!
(
Davis grabs it, throws it to Tru. She
catches it and runs off)
DAVIS (
to
himself)
Well, what am I supposed to eat?
35. EXT. ATM Machine. DAY.
(
Tru walks around into the alley.
Michael is pressing buttons on the ATM machine.)
TRU
Michael
MICHAEL
Who are you?
TRU
You don’t know me, and I don’t have time to
explain, but I’m here to help your daughter. She has to get to a hospital. Now
MICHAEL
She’s gonna be fine
TRU
No she’s not. Elizabeth’s in trouble,
believe me
MICHAEL
How do you know her name?
TRU
The same way I know you’re about to find
out that your balance is negative $432 and eighteen cents
(
Michael takes the receipt from the
machine and looks at it. Camera shot to show it does say -$432.18)
MICHAEL
I don’t understand
TRU
Now you’re planning on going to the clinic
to beg for free medicine for Elizabeth, but let me save you some time. Patricia
Norris, your case worker, is gonna be sympathetic, but she’s not authorized to
give you the meds
MICHAEL
What are you talking about?
(
He walks past her)
TRU
Amiodarone isn’t going to save her life,
Michael
(
Michael stops)
Her heart is gonna fail today
(
He turns to look at her)
Is there anything you wouldn’t do for your
daughter?
MICHAEL
I’d die for her
(
Tru reaches into her bag for the
cellphone and holds it out to him)
TRU
Call your wife and tell her to get Elizabeth to the hospital
(
he looks at the phone)
Here!
(
Michael sighs, takes the phone and
dials)
MICHAEL
Honey, it’s me. It she…? No, no, look the
medicine is not gonna help her. Take her to the hospital. Yeah, I’ll meet you
there
(
He hands the phone back to Tru)
Thank you. Whoever you are
(
He turns to walk out of the alley. The
man who dropped the sweet wrapper on the street the previous three days is in
front of him, he grabs Michael round the neck, holding a knife to his throat)
MAN
I want all of your money right now!
TRU
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
MICHAEL
Come on, I don’t have a thing!
[Flashback: DISPATCH: “We’ve got a
robbery on the corner of Clark and Fourth, nearest unit respond immediately”]
[Flashback: Tru looking at the
street sign: 342 North Clark Street]
MAN
Come on!
TRU
Please, no, he doesn’t have anything!
MAN
Shut up!
MICHAEL
Please…
TRU
Here, take my necklace, its worth a lot,
just please, don’t hurt him
(
The man looks at the necklace Tru is
taking off)
Please, take this
MAN
All right…
(
He shoves Michael against the wall,
still holding the knife out)
All right, take it off, come on!
(
Tru struggles with it)
Come on! Come on!
TRU
I’m trying!
MAN
Take it off, come on
(
Michael punches him, knocking him to
the ground)
TRU
No
(
The man picks himself up, shoves
Michael backwards and stabs him with the knife, in the stomach)
TRU
No!
(
He stabs him again, Michael yells in
pain)
MAN
Come on, move it, the necklace, let’s go!
(
Tru hands over the necklace and the
man runs off)
TRU (
kneeling
by Michael)
Its okay…hey, it’s okay…
(
she dials 911)
OPERATOR
911, what’s your emergency?
36. INT. E.R. DAY.
(
Michael is being wheeled in quickly on
a trolley)
DOCTOR 1
Multiple stab wounds, looks like he’s
bleeding out
DOCTOR 2
We need another line. Get a 14-gauge in his
right antecube and set up a rapid infuser. Send a type and cross-match to the
blood bank now. On three…one, two, three
(
Several doctors lift him from the
trolley to a bed in the E.R. Michael grunts in pain)
DOCTOR 1
Who the hell are you?
TRU
City Morgue
MICHAEL
Where’s my daughter?
(
A Machine across the room beeps)
DOCTOR 2
Damn it. She’s in V-fib
MICHAEL
Elizabeth…Elizabeth!
(
The doctor working on Elizabeth puts a mask over her face)
DOCTOR 2
Get the paddles
MICHAEL
No…
DOCTOR 2
Everybody clear
MICHAEL
Elizabeth…
(
The paddles charge. The doctor shocks Elizabeth)
DOCTOR 2
Still no pulse. Start the compressions
MICHAEL
Please, no…
(
A nurse starts the compressions on
Elizabeth)
MICHAEL
Oh, no, God, no…
DOCTOR 1
Please try and calm down, sir
DOCTOR 3
Three entry wounds in the right upper
quadrant. Set up for a DPL
NURSE
Yes, doctor
DOCTOR 1
Frank, blood in the peritoneum. Where the
hell is the trauma surgeon?
[Flashback: MICHAEL in the alley
“I’d die for her”]
(
Tru looks over at Elizabeth. The nurse
and doctor are still working on her)
MICHAEL
I’m not gonna make it…please, make sure
she’s okay, she’s safe
DOCTOR 3
Pressure’s still dropping
DOCTOR 2
Clear
DOCTOR 3
Push more ringers as fast as you can
DOCTOR 1
What he needs is blood, where is the O-neg
I ordered?
NURSE
It’s on its way
DOCTOR 1
Scalpel
[Flashback: Patricia Norris: “And
with O-neg patients like Elizabeth, the chances of a heart coming available
are… TRU: “Slim to none”]
NURSE
Scalpel
DOCTOR 1
What a mess
[Flashback: Tru in the Morgue with
Michael’s body before the day rewound: he had a bullet wound to the heart]
TRU
His heart was destroyed. But not today. I
didn’t need to save him, I needed to save his heart. For her
(
she leans over Michael)
Your daughter’s gonna live….a long, and
healthy life
DOCTOR 1
Come on, come on, push through. Come on!
(
Michael’s machine begins flatlining)
DOCTOR 1
Damn it. Damn it. (
he looks up a the
monitor) Time of death, 12:32 pm
TRU
His daughter needs his heart
(
She points to Elizabeth. Doctor 1
looks over to Doctor 2)
DOCTOR 2
Notify the transplant team. And get
Paediatric Cardiology
(
The doctors working on the patients
fade gradually into a shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT)
37. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(
Tru enters her apartment. It’s dark.
She switches on the light. She walks over to the kitchen. On the tap is a
post-it note, it reads: “All fixed! Luc”. She smiles, and flicks the switch to
test the garbage disposal. It works fine. Tru empties Davis’s shrimp sandwiches
into it and flicks the switch. The sink makes a horrible grinding sound. Tru
tries to switch it off quickly. Tru sighs)
HARRISON
I hope you didn’t just break that. Because
Luc spent like, two hours trying to fix it
TRU
Yeah, I know
HARRISON
Hey, you okay?
TRU
This has been the longest day of my life
HARRISON
I know the feeling. If it makes you feel
any better, I got evicted today
TRU
Really?
HARRISON
But your boy Luc really saved my ass
TRU
He kept your buddies from trashing my
place?
HARRISON
Oh, yeah, that. And he joined the poker
game, and then he…well, let’s just say that I have enough money for last
month’s rent
(
Tru rolls her eyes)
HARRISON (
cont’d)
Oh, and next month’s too. Hoo-hoo! But, you
should get some rest. (
he kisses her cheek) I’m out. I’ll talk to you
tomorrow
TRU
Yeah. I really hope so
(
Harrison turns in the doorway,
looking questioningly at her. Tru waves. Harrison shrugs and disappears)
(
Soft music plays throughout)
Cut to:
Tru
sitting up in bed, the next morning, she smiles to herself
38. INT. Morgue. DAY.
TRU
Hey
DAVIS
Hi
TRU
So you were right. Someone was supposed to
die
DAVIS
Well, he just had to die differently, so
someone else could live
TRU
I should’ve been able to save them both
DAVIS
You can change events, but you can’t change
fate, Tru
TRU
I can do things that probably no one else
can. Sometimes even that doesn’t feel like enough
DAVIS
Sometimes it isn’t
