PROLOGUE

Shot of the outside of Tru’s apartment block

1. INT. Tru’s bedroom. MORNING.

(Tru stirs in bed as someone knocks on her door. She looks at the clock, yawns and gets out of bed. She goes over to the blinds and peers through them to see it’s Luc holding a large paper bag standing outside her front door. She goes over to the door and opens it)

LUC
So you finally did it. Thirty-nine straight days at the Morgue and you finally took one off. I had to see it for myself

TRU (holding two fingers an inch apart)
I was this close to the record

LUC
Well I thought that we could celebrate over breakfast

(He kisses her and enters the apartment)

2. INT. Tru’s kitchen. DAY.

(Dressed and ready, Luc stands by the cooker, stirring something in a pan. Tru is looking in the refrigerator)

TRU
This is pathetic! Fifty people coming here tonight and all I have in the way of munchies is a bottle of olives and a box of baking soda

(She tosses them in the trashcan)

LUC
Here’s what I don’t get. You moved into this place six months ago and you’re just getting around to throwing a housewarming party tonight?

TRU
What can I say? I’ve been busy

So, are you nervous?

LUC
About what?

TRU
Tonight. Meeting my friends for the first time. My brother

LUC
All they’re gonna do is study my every move and report back to you. Why would that make me nervous?

TRU
You’ll be great

(Tru’s cellphone rings on the table. Tru goes over to answer it)

Hello?

MARK (voice-over)
Tru? Hey, it’s me. Oh, come on it’s only been a couple of months, don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten?

TRU
Mark

[Flashback of Mark the lecturer kissing another of his students in episode “Pilot”]

MARK (voice-over)
Look, I know what happened was my fault. And you have every reason to hate me. But I just…I can’t, I can’t stop thinking about you Tru, and I want you back

(Tru looks over to Luc, who smiles at her)

Hey, are you still there?

TRU
Yeah. But now really isn’t a good time

Cut to: MARK walking in a busy street
Well maybe I could come by later. You know, we could talk, face to face

Cut to: TRU
See, here’s the thing. What you want really doesn’t matter. Know why? Because you’re the one who cheated

Cut to: MARK
Yeah, and it was the biggest mistake of my life Tru, and I know that now

Cut to: TRU
Yeah well you should have known it then. Besides, um, I’ve met someone new. And he’s great

MARK
Please, Tru, it’ll never happen again

TRU
Oh you’re right, it won’t

MARK
Tru…

TRU
I gotta go, Mark

(She turns to Luc and smiles)

 [Fade to Black]
 [CREDITS]

3. INT. Tru’s kitchen. DAY.
(Tru walks over to where Luc has prepared breakfast, and sits down)

LUC
Is everything okay?

TRU
Yeah, why?

LUC
You looked a little freaked when you answered the phone, I just thought maybe it was bad news

TRU
Oh, well, the truth is, that was my ex. And he wanted to see me

LUC
Oh. Well, I can’t say that’s the answer I was expecting, but, um, hey whatever you need. I mean, you and I have only been out a few times so…

TRU
I told him no

LUC
Even better

(He laughs)

TRU
I’m sorry. It’s weird, I shouldn’t have told you

LUC
No, no, I’m glad you did. Look, if you and me can’t be honest with each other what hope do we have?

4. INT. Café. Day.
(Harrison and Tru are sitting on bar stools)

HARRISON
So you’re probably wondering why I asked you to meet me here today

TRU
I meet you here all the time

HARRISON
Whatever…It’s Lindsay. Ever since we hooked up, I can’t stop thinking about her

TRU
You’re kidding me, right?

HARRISON
Crazy as it sounds, I’m not. You know me, I can’t stand Lindsay. I never could. And yet, she just keeps popping into my head. It’s confusing the hell out of me

TRU
And you’re telling me this now because…?

HARRISON
Well, you’re meeting her to shop for your party, right?

 (Tru nods)

I thought maybe you could feel her out. See where her heads at. You know? Vis-à-vis yours truly?

TRU
Yeah…uh…

HARRISON
Come on, help a brother out

 (Tru sighs)

All I’m looking for is a simple “yes” or “no”?

5. INT. Store. DAY.
(Tru and Lindsay are pushing a shopping cart)

LINDSAY
Maybe

TRU
Maybe you’re still interested in my brother?

LINDSAY
Oh he’s cute, don’t get me wrong, but he went all weird after we made out, like he was embarrassed or something, you know, typical guy stuff

TRU
He was probably just nervous

LINDSAY
Still, post-hook-up you give a girl a call. You know, maybe some flowers. Make the girl feel special

(She picks up a carving knife from the side and puts it in the cart)

TRU
We don’t need that

LINDSAY
Gotta cut the limes with something, right? Besides, it’s on sale

TRU
Okay

(Camera close-up of the yellow-handled carving knife in the cart)

LINDSAY
Oh my God, PEZ! I forgot PEZ

TRU
You and your candy

LINDSAY
I just love the little dispensers. They’re so kitschy

(Lindsay goes off to find PEZ. Tru’s cellphone rings.)

TRU
Hello Davis

Cut to: DAVIS in the Morgue
So you’re absolutely, positively 100-per-cent sure about this whole day off thing?

Cut to: TRU
For the last time, yes

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay, but what if (whispering) a dead body comes in and asks for help? What do I do?!

Cut to: TRU
First of all, they don’t talk to you, they talk to me

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay, but what if…

Cut to: TRU
Second of all, they don’t ask for help every night. That’s not how it works

Cut to: DAVIS
Just come in for five minutes, and if no one asks for help then you can go home!

Cut to: TRU
Did you hear what I said? I worked eight days this week. Literally!

Cut to: DAVIS
Yes, but what I’m trying to say is that…

Cut to: TRU
Davis>! I need a break

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay. So I’ll see you tomorrow?

Cut to: TRU
I’ll see you then. Bye

(Camera shot of the contents of the shopping cart)

MARK
Chips, dips, a whole lot of beer? Looks like somebody’s having a party

 (Tru sighs, and looks around)

What’s wrong?

TRU
Nothing, I’m just surprised to see you here, is all. A real coincidence

MARK
Well, I live three blocks from here, remember that? This is my market where I shop. I’m not following you or anything

TRU
Okay

MARK
Um, since I have you here, I just, um, I wanted to apologize. Because I feel like I came on strongly this morning, and it was rude

TRU
That’s fine

MARK
Anyway, um, it was nice to see you

TRU
Yeah…

(Mark leaves the store, Tru watches him go)

6. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(Tru and Lindsay unload the shopping)

LINDSAY
Okay, I still can’t believe you had a stalker moment and I missed it

TRU
It wasn’t a stalker moment. Mark and I just happened to be in the same place at the same time

LINDSAY
That’s what stalkers do. They just happen to be in your market, then they just happen to follow you home, then they just happen to chop your head off and seal it in a baggie

TRU (placing a new vase on the side)
Linds!

LINDSAY
I’m just saying. First the phone call, now this?

(Tru’s phone rings. She picks it up)

TRU
Hello?

HARRISON (voice-over)
What’d she say? And tell me everything

TRU
Actually, I’m pretty satisfied with my long-distance plan

Cut to: HARRISON walking down the street
Well, what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Cut to: TRU
Um, it means that you should maybe call back another time

Cut to: HARRISON
Ooh, she’s right there isn’t she?

Cut to: TRU
Yes, that’s right

Cut to: TRU
(To Lindsay) Telemarketer

(Lindsay rolls her eyes, continuing to put the shopping away)

Cut to: HARRISON
Well, just gimme a hint! Tell me something. Anything

Cut to: TRU
Well, I think if you want your customer to change plans, you should show her some special consideration

Cut to: HARRISON
Special… special…like a gift or something?

Cut to: TRU
Not bad

HARRISON (voice-over)

Well what should I get her?

(Lindsay comes across and takes the phone from Tru)

LINDSAY
Hey, Yeah, she’s very happy with the plan she’s got now. Thanks

(she hangs up the phone)

Cut to: HARRISON
Whoa…

Cut to: LINDSAY
Only way to handle those guys

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT

Cut to: Guests coming down the corridor bearing gifts – NIGHT

Cut to: Shot of the sign on Tru’s front door which reads, underneath a picture of a mammoth. “Mammoth party. Welcome to Tru’s new home”. Loud music is playing inside

7. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(The door opens, and the music gets louder. People are milling about all over the room.)

YOUNG MAN
Hey, Tru! Cool party! It’s good to see you again!

(He grabs Tru round the waist in a hug, lifting her off the ground)

TRU
Thanks!

(He lets her go and wanders off. Tru continues walking)

(Muttering to herself) Who is that??

(She walks over to where Lindsey is standing, chopping limes)

LINDSEY
Oh my God, Marty’s like actually on time for once (she laughs)

TRU
Marty. That’s who that was

LINDSEY (holding the knife up)
So can you believe this thing came with instructions?

TRU
For a knife?

LINDSEY
Yeah. Apparently it can cut through rebar!

TRU
Good to know

(There is a crash in the background, then clapping)

LINDSEY
Oh no

(Tru dashes over to Sam, who is standing over the broken vase)

SAM (holding his beer bottle aloft)
Thank you, thank you very much

TRU (arriving with a trashcan)

Hey, Sam

SAM
Tru, I’m so sorry about the vase

(They both lean down to pick up the pieces, putting them into the trashcan)

TRU
Oh, don’t be. You know what they say, priceless heirlooms are made to be broken

(Tru stands up and hugs him)

So, how’s med school? You’re at Hopkins right?

SAM
No. That kind of fell through. I missed the final because of a big family emergency and this jerk professor wouldn’t give me a make-up

TRU
Sorry to hear that

SAM
So now I’m selling shoes with my dad in his store until I can reapply. What about you?

TRU
Tagging toes at the morgue

SAM
Man, and I thought I had it bad

(Tru smiles, waves it off. She picks up the trashcan and makes her way back through the room. She passes Lindsey and Harrison; Camera stays on them)

LINDSEY (holding a gold watch)
Oh, Harrison, it’s beautiful

HARRISON
That’s just a little something from me to you

(Lindsey laughs, turns the watch over)

LINDSEY
Uh, actually, its um…from Bill to Sally

HARRISON
What?

LINDSEY
Yeah, there’s an inscription on the back. “To Sally, from Bill”

HARRISON
That…no, no…that can be removed

LINDSEY
Where’d you get this thing, a pawn shop?

HARRISON
Is that a problem?

(Lindsey gives him a disgusted look)

8. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru stoops in front of the HIFI and changes the song. Someone taps her on the shoulder and hands her a flower. Tru turns round, startled)

LUC
Happy Housewarming

TRU
Oh, thank you

(Over his shoulder, she sees Harrison talking to Lindsey)

Oh, hey …

(She takes the flower and places it in a vase on the side)

Come here one sec

LUC
Yeah

Cut to: Harrison and Lindsey talking

HARRISON
What ever happened to uh, what is that saying? “It’s the thought that counts”?

LINDSEY
It counts if it’s yours. This thought here happens to be, ah, Bill’s

(Tru and Luc appear beside them)

Oh hi! You must be Luc! I’m Lindsey

 (They shake hands)

LUC
Nice to meet you

TRU
And this is my brother, Harrison

HARRISON
Hey, how’s it going

LINDSEY
Ah, Tru, can you help me with the punch real quick?

TRU
Yeah

 (The girls walk away)

HARRISON
Yo, let me ask you a question. Guy to guy. Wanna buy a watch? Huh? Huh?

(Luc smiles nervously, looking back to see where Tru’s got to)

9. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru and Lindsey are pouring drink into the punch bowl)

LINDSEY
Okay your brother is so hopeless. I mean, a pawned watch? How tacky

TRU
Harrison> just has his own way of doing things

LINDSEY
Right, the cheap way

TRU
Lindsey!

LINDSEY
Okay, sorry, sorry, change of subject

(She looks towards Luc, who is looking desperately towards them, wanting to get away from Harrison)

Your new boyfriend is Hot!

TRU
I just hope he’s having a good time

LINDSEY
Ah, if he isn’t so what. It’s your party, remember

(She hands Tru a glass of punch)

TRU
I’ve already had a few. I should probably slow down

LINDSEY
Nights like this do not happen that often, especially for someone with a job like yours

(She holds her own glass out)

Cheers!

TRU (smiling, clinks Lindsey’s glass with hers)
Cheers

MARTY
Hey, Tru – there’s an angry guy at the door. He says he’s your neighbour

10. INT. In the corridor outside Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru and Lindsey come out of the apartment and close the door)

BRIAN
Turn the music down or else I’m calling the police!

TRU
All you had to do was ask, Brian

BRIAN
No, no, no, I’m not asking, I’m telling. Turn the music down

TRU
Fine!

BRIAN
Yeah, because, me and the landlord, we’re like ‘that’! (holds up two crossed fingers) Eh? Yeah, one call from me and he’s gonna take away your parking spot!

TRU
I don’t have a car

 (Lindsey laughs)

BRIAN
In case you get one!

(He walks away. Lindsey waves after him)

LINDSEY (sarcastically)
Why didn’t you invite your next door neighbour?

TRU
Are you kidding me? That guy’s a creep!

LINDSEY
All the more reason to invite him. If he’s helping make the noise, he can’t complain about it, right?

TRU
Well, it’s too late now

(She follows Lindsey into the apartment and closes the door)

Cut to: Shot of the City, cars driving with their headlamps on – Night

Cut to: Shot of the outside of Tru’s apartment block, and the fire escape – Night

11. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru rips the “Mammoth Party” sign off her door. Some people leave)

TRU
Bye. Bye guys, hey I’ll call you okay?

(She shuts the apartment door. She looks over to Lindsey and Luc, who are talking in the kitchen. Tru kneels to pick up some glasses. A hand touches her shoulder. Tru turns round)

MARK
I need to talk to you. Look, I know that I shouldn’t be here, it’s inappropriate. But I cannot stay away, and I’m sorry

TRU
You need to go, now, Mark

MARK
I need you to talk to me Tru

TRU
We’re through talking!

MARK
All I’m asking for is five minutes of your time

(Camera pans over to show Lindsey looking worried, Luc looking agitated, and Sam staring at them)

Five minutes and then I will go

TRU
Fine. But not here, just…

MARK
Okay. Meet me upstairs, on the roof. Promise me

TRU
Wait for me there

(Mark exits the apartment. Luc walks over to her)

LUC
Hey, what was that about?

TRU
Um, that was the guy who called me this morning

LUC
Your ex?

TRU
He just kind of showed up. He wants to talk to me

LUC (nods)
So talk to him

TRU
You’re okay with that?

LUC
I trust you

TRU
Thanks

12. EXT. Rooftop. NIGHT.
(Tru walks out onto the roof, looking around)

TRU
Mark?

(There is no answer. Tru looks around once more, then turns to go back downstairs.)

(A hand touches her shoulder, Tru spins round to see Mark)

TRU (slapping his hand away)
What the hell’s the matter with you?

MARK
The first time I ever kissed you was on this roof. And I thought, maybe…

TRU
Mark…

(She puts her hand on the doorknob to leave, Mark closes the door)

MARK
No, stay. Talk to me. About how great we are together

TRU
You need to go home. Don’t come near me again

(She opens the door and leaves)

MARK
Great…

13. INT. Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru comes back out into the corridor. Some more of her guests are leaving)

TRU
Drive safe

(The neighbour, Brian, is halfway out of his doorway. He shakes his head at her, then goes back into his apartment. Sam stumbles down the corridor towards her)

TRU
Whoa…Call you a cab, Sam?

SAM
No, but if you know of a good place to throw up, that would be great

TRU
Down the steps, take a right. Anywhere in the alley’s fine

SAM
You rock!

(He pats her shoulder, then stumbles down the corridor)

14. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru enters; Luc is blowing out the candles on the table)

LUC
You okay?

TRU
Yeah, where’d everybody go?

LUC
Well, without you here no-one really felt like partying. That, and we ran out of booze

TRU
Ah

LUC
Is everything okay with the party crasher?

TRU (taking off her coat)
Fine

LUC
You tired?

TRU
Uh, Lindsey’s punch kinda got my head doing somersaults

LUC
So go to bed. I’ll clean up after you

TRU
No, no, just leave it till tomorrow

LUC
No, come on, let’s get you to bed

15. INT. Tru’s bedroom. NIGHT
(Tru slips off her shoes and climbs into bed)

TRU
Thanks for everything, I had such a good time tonight

LUC
Yeah, me too

TRU
You wanna stay?

LUC
I would love to. But tonight, you need to sleep

TRU
So I’ll see you tomorrow?

LUC
Count on it

(He kisses her. He leans across to switch off the bedside light. The clock reads “02.07”.)

LUC
Good night

Cut to: Shot of the outside of the apartment block, early hours

16. INT. Tru’s bedroom. Early hours.
(The clock ticks from “2.59” to “3.00”. An alarm outside makes Tru stir. There is somebody lying next to her on the bed.)

TRU (sitting up)
Luc? I thought you said you were going home?

(She reaches over and switches on her bedside light, and looks down beside her to see not Luc, but Mark. She gasps and leaps out of bed. Looking again, she sees he has a gaping wound in his stomach, and there is blood everywhere. The camera drops to show the yellow-handled knife is on the floor.)

 [Fade to Black]

17. INT. Tru’s bedroom. Early hours.
(Tru is gasping, breathing heavily. Camera shows the knife again, with blood covering the first couple of inches. Camera pans across to show a line of blood across the walls. Whimpering and crying, Tru hurries across to Mark and places 2 fingers on his neck. She turns him over, he isn’t breathing. Tru picks up her phone and dials 911)

OPERATOR (voice-over)
911 emergency. May I have your name and location

TRU
Tru Davies, 1723 Oracle. I’m calling to report a murder

OPERATOR (voice-over)
Can you tell me what happened?

TRU
I just woke up and he was here, I don’t know how…

MARK
Tru…

 (Tru turns round slowly)

OPERATOR (voice-over)
Miss?

Miss, are you still there?

Are you still there? Stay on the line please

(Tru walks slowly over to Mark, still crying, the phone lowered in her hand)

MARK (grabbing Tru’s arm)
Tru…I need you

[Flashbacks of the days images as they rewind]

18. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru sits up in bed. She looks at the clock, it reads 10:30am. Someone knocks at the door. She runs over to the blinds and checks – it’s Luc. She answers the door)

LUC
So you finally did it. Thirty nine straight days at the morgue and you finally took one off. I just had to see it for myself

19. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(Luc is cooking breakfast. Tru paces up and down)

LUC
So here’s what I don’t get. You moved into this place six months ago and you’re just getting around to throwing a housewarming party tonight?

Tru?

TRU
Sorry, what’s that?

(Her cellphone rings. She picks it up)

Hello?

MARK (voice-over)
Uh, Tru? It’s me

TRU
Mark

Cut to: MARK walking in the street

Yeah, yeah, you haven’t forgotten, I’m glad. There’s something that I’d like to talk to you about, but I don’t wanna talk to you over the phone

Cut to: TRU
Standard Diner. One hour

Cut to: MARK in the street

Yeah, okay… (he looks at the phone surprised) Okay

20. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(Tru walks out of the bedroom, dressed, just zipping up her cardigan. Luc is putting the finishing touches to breakfast, when he sees her coming, he pulls out a chair)

TRU
That was Davis. He needs me to work today

LUC
You’re kidding

 (Tru shakes her head)

Well, can it wait until after breakfast?

TRU
He said it was an emergency…you’re not mad are you?

LUC
No, no…I just, I feel bad for you. It seems like you never catch a break

TRU
Hey… (she leans over and kisses him on the cheek) I’ll see you tonight right?

LUC
Yeah, yeah…

Cut to: Shot of bus rolling past the City Morgue building

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue door

21. INT. Morgue Corridor. DAY

TRU
So I turned him over, there was a single wound. Right below the heart. I called 911, then he asked for help, and the day restarted and here I am

DAVIS
Mmm. So if I’m to understand you correctly, you had a party and you didn’t invite me?

TRU
Davis>!

DAVIS
I thought we were friends

TRU
We are friends

DAVIS
Yeah, sure when you wake up next to some dead guy

TRU
I apologize, can we please focus here

DAVIS
Okay. So you have no idea how Mike ended up in your bed?

TRU
Mark. And no, I don’t

(They go into the post-mortem area)

Look, I had a lot to drink last night

DAVIS
What about suspects?

TRU
So far, I can only think of one

DAVIS
Who?

TRU
Me

DAVIS
Come on, Tru

TRU
Well I don’t know, Mark was acting so weird yesterday. Maybe he got violent, Maybe I fought back

DAVIS
Uh-uh, there’s no way that you’d kill him

TRU
How do you know?

DAVIS
Because I know you. You save lives, you don’t take them

So the victim was stabbed once in the chest, was that the only wound?

[Flashback of Tru staring at Mark’s body]

TRU
There was a pretty deep cut on the palm of his right hand

DAVIS
What else?

[Flashback of Tru looking around the room, at the walls with the line of blood across]

TRU
There was blood, on the wall behind my bed. It looked like sort of a half circle

DAVIS
Interesting. Anyplace else?

[Flashback, Tru crying on the phone: “I just woke up and he was here, I don’t know how!” – Camera pans over to reveal Tru saw blood on the doorknob]

TRU
Yeah, on the doorknob

DAVIS
And you said you found the knife on the floor

TRU
Beside the bed

[Flashback of Tru leaping out of bed, and noticing the knife on the floor]

TRU
Only the first couple inches of the blade were bloody

DAVIS
That indicates a shallow wound

TRU
You don’t think it was suicide?

DAVIS
No. The slash on his palm sounds like a defence wound, meaning he was trying to protect himself, which suggests murder

 (Tru nods)

Here, let me show you something

22. INT. Morgue Office. DAY.
(Tru and Davis are looking at the computer screen. It shows a program loading up called “LFD Forensic Simulator”.)

DAVIS
It’s a forensic simulator program. It helps investigators recreate a crime scene that has been tampered with or destroyed

TRU
So you’re gonna recreate my apartment on the computer?

DAVIS
Once I’ve put in these variables, I might be able to extrapolate some ballpark description of the killer

TRU
How ballpark?

DAVIS
Height, weight, sex. It’ll take a few hours

TRU
Well, I’m meeting Mark in fifteen minutes

 (She turns to leave)

DAVIS
Um, aren’t you forgetting something?

 (Tru turns round)

Uh, the party, I’m invited tonight, right?

TRU
Oh, no, there isn’t gonna be a party

DAVIS
Oh no there has to be, there has to be a party. There has to be a party. In order to save Mark’s life, you have to recreate the circumstances that led to his death exactly. Not only can you not cancel the party, you have to make absolutely sure that he shows up. Otherwise, the killer could strike some other place. Someplace where you will not be able to protect him

TRU
All right

23. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru walks along, talking on her cellphone)

TRU
Sorry Harrison, we’ll do lunch tomorrow

Cut to: HARRISON (walking in the street)
Uh, actually there was something I needed to talk to you about

Cut to: TRU
Lindsey, right?

Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah, how did you…

Cut to: TRU
Look, if you want her to like you, you gotta make her feel special

Cut to: HARRISON
Well, how do I do that?

Cut to: TRU
I don’t know, pick some flowers or burn her a CD mix.

Cut to: HARRISON
Well, could I just go buy her something?

Cut to: TRU
Fine, just make sure it’s not a watch with another woman’s name on it

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh, come on. I would never do that (he laughs)
Unless I did that. Did I do that?

Cut to: TRU
I thought you don’t believe that I relive days

Cut to: HARRISON
I don’t. I mean, I’d like to. I would. But don’t change the subject. All I wanted was some advice

Cut to: TRU
Okay then well just remember, think personal, not personalized

Cut to: HARRISON (muttering, then hanging up)
Personal, not personalized…

24. INT. Café. DAY.
(Tru and Mark are having coffee)

MARK
It’s been a while, huh. Are you okay? You seem a little…

TRU
Uh, yeah, it’s nothing. I’m fine

MARK
It’s kinda strange seeing me isn’t it?

TRU
Kind of

MARK
Yeah. Anyway, the reason I called…

TRU
Yeah, what’s been going on with you?

MARK
Uh, me? You know, the usual. Just classes, grading papers, praying for tenure

TRU
What else? Personally?

MARK
Um, I was seeing somebody. But I broke it off, if that’s what you mean

TRU
Another student?

MARK
Yeah. It’s not one of my best qualities is it?

TRU
Anyone I know?

(Mark clears his throat)

MARK
Gotta admit, Tru, this isn’t the conversation I thought we’d be having. Her name is Julie Spence, she graduated last Spring, and now she works in the mayor’s office

TRU
How’d she take it?

MARK
Take what?

TRU
The break-up

MARK
Um, actually, she kind of went psycho on me, and she even slashed my tyres the night I broke things off with her. But you don’t wanna hear about this. It’s just really good to see you again, Tru

TRU
Yeah, you too

25. EXT. Café. DAY.

MARK
Well this is great. It was strange, but it was great

TRU
Yeah, it was good to see you

MARK
You know, we talked so much during lunch, I never got to tell you why I called. Um…I’ve been thinking about you a lot, Tru. About us. About how great we were together. And I miss you so much, and I want you back

TRU
Mark…

MARK
No, no, look, I know that we have a lot to work out…but I will do whatever it takes

TRU
I’m seeing someone. And I know how this is gonna sound, but I want us to stay friends

MARK
Friends. Ah yes, I’ve heard that one before

TRU
No, really. Hey, I’m having a party tonight. You should come. We could talk some more, you know, about everything

MARK
Okay. That sounds great. I have a late class, but I’ll swing by right after

 (They hug)

TRU
Okay, bye

MARK
Bye

(Camera turns to show Luc is standing a few feet behind them, he has seen them hug. He watches Mark run across the road, then he walks over to Tru)

LUC
I guess Davis didn’t need you after all

TRU
What are you doing here?

LUC
I’m on my way to work. Which, by the way, is where you’re supposed to be

TRU
Look, the guy you just saw me with is my ex-boyfriend, he’s the one that called this morning…

LUC
That’s why you ran out on breakfast?! So you could meet him?

TRU
Luc, he’s in trouble. He needed to talk to me

LUC
What kind of trouble?

TRU
It’s hard to explain, you just have to trust me

(she reaches for his hand, but he moves his away)

LUC
Like I trusted you when you said you had to work this morning? You know what, have fun at your party tonight, all right?

 (He walks off)

TRU
Luc, wait! Luc!

 [Fade to Black]
 [Flashback of the days images]

Cut to: Shot of the Morgue’s door

26. INT. Morgue. DAY.

TRU
You called me here to look at a watermelon? How’s that supposed to help us solve a murder?

DAVIS
Observe

(He stabs the watermelon with a carving knife)

Notice, there’s no leakage. The knife has sealed the wound. But!

(He picks the stabbed watermelon up and walks over to the wall)

When you pull the knife out…

(He pulls the knife out of the watermelon, and then switches on the ultraviolet light. It shows up the watermelon juice on the wall, in a half-circle)

Does that look familiar?

[Flashback of the blood above Tru’s bed]

TRU
So you’re saying Mark pulled the knife out himself

DAVIS
But that’s not all. The blood on the doorknob suggests that he opened the door with his wounded hand, indicating that he was stabbed outside of your apartment. Okay, here’s the sequence of events as I see them…

Mark Evans is attacked…

[Flashback of Mark being slashed at with a knife, he puts his hand out in front of him, yelling in pain]

Left there for dead…he gets to his feet, he staggers towards your apartment…

[Flashback of Mark staggering with the yellow-handled knife sticking in his stomach]

With his wounded hand he opens the door

[Flashback of Mark opening the door with his bloody hand]

Makes his way to the foot of the bed

[Flashback of Mark standing beside the bed, watching Tru asleep]

He places his hand on the knife

TRU
And yanks it out of his own chest

[Flashback of Mark pulling the knife out, the blood spraying on the walls behind him, then collapsing on the bed]

DAVIS
Precisely

TRU
Yeah, but how is he supposed to just walk around with a knife in his heart?

DAVIS
Because the knife sealed the wound. For the first few minutes, there was probably very little blood loss

TRU
Then why pull it out?

DAVIS
Well more than likely he was in shock. And I know what you’re thinking, none of this proves you’re the killer

TRU
Well none of this proves that I’m not the killer either

You know what I was supposed to be doing right now? Making bean dip…decorating for my party, having fun

DAVIS
Nobody said this job was gonna be easy

TRU
Yeah, well no-one said it was gonna suck either

 (Tru turns to go)

DAVIS
Tru! Tru?

 (Tru turns round again)

You’re not alone

We are gonna crack this together

Cut to: Shot of the outside of Tru’s apartment, street, and fire escape

Cut to: Tru walking down the corridor, past Brian’s apartment

[Flashback: Brian: “Turn the music down or else I’m calling the police!”]

27. INT. Apartment block corridor. DAY.
(Tru knocks on Brian’s door. Brian looks through the spy-hole, then opens it)

TRU (forcing herself to be bright and cheery)
Hey, Brian! I’m having a party tonight, and I’d like you to come

BRIAN
Seriously?

TRU
Yeah. What fun would it be without my neighbours?

BRIAN (excited)

Well, all right

TRU
See you tonight?

BRIAN
Sure, yeah. I mean, I’m always up for a party

TRU
Great

(She walks away to her own apartment)

27. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(Tru puts her bag down, and goes over to the cabinet. She takes out her year book, opens it to a page and looks for what she needs)

TRU
Julie Spence

(She rips out the page with Julie Spence’s picture and details on. She is about to leave when she notices the vase)

[Flashback of the previous night, and the vase breaking]

(Tru moves the vase from the sideboard to the top of the television, then turns to leave. As she is about to go out the door, Lindsey enters, laden down with bags)

LINDSEY
Hey Tru, a little help here?

TRU
Ever heard of two trips?

LINDSEY
Well, if someone hadn’t bailed on me!

TRU
Sorry about that. Oh, how much do I owe you?

LINDSEY
One-forty plus change

(She places a yellow-handled carving knife on the table. Tru stares at her, shocked)

Oh, don’t look at me like that. It was on sale

(Tru picks it up and looks at it)

28. INT. Tru’s apartment corridor. DAY.
(Tru hands the knife to Harrison)

HARRISON
You made me come all the way over here to get rid of a knife. A perfectly good knife, I might add

TRU
Just lose it. I don’t care how

(she turns round to return to her apartment)

HARRISON
Oh, hey, hey, I still haven’t figured out a gift for Lindsey. I mean, any other chick, I’d buy candles or something, but with Lindsey, she’s got such weird taste!

TRU
So get her something weird. Just make sure…

HARRISON
I know, I know. Get rid of the knife

 (Tru dashes off)

Something weird…

29. EXT. Outside the Town Hall building. DAY.
(Tru is holding the photo of Julie Spence, watching everyone who walks down the steps. It’s raining, everyone is carrying umbrellas. Tru looks at the photo again, and then looks up at a young woman hurrying down the steps)

TRU
Excuse me? Julie?

 (Julie turns around)

Hi. You don’t know me, but my name is Tru Davies. I’m a friend of Mark Evans

JULIE
Actually, I know exactly who you are

30. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru and Julie walk along together)

JULIE
Mark used to talk about you all the time

TRU
He did?

JULIE
He was obsessed with you, even when he and I were together. You here to gloat?

TRU
About what?

JULIE
Getting him back. I always knew he wasn’t over you

TRU
I didn’t get him back. I don’t even want him back

JULIE
Then what do you want?

TRU
To warn you. No matter how strong your feelings are for Mark, you can’t let them get the best of you

JULIE
I have no idea what you’re talking about

TRU
He told me you slashed his tyres the night he called things off

JULIE
No, it wasn’t me. But whoever did that terrible thing, I’m sure Mark deserved it

TRU
Just stay away from him

JULIE
What are you, his bodyguard?

TRU
No I’m just worried about him that’s all

JULIE
Look whatever happened between me and Mark is our business and not yours

TRU
I’m not so sure about that

JULIE
I’ll deal with my ex’s my way, Tru

TRU
Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about

JULIE
You know what? I think I finally get why you and Mark were so perfect together. You’re both psychotic!

(She walks away. Tru shakes her head)

Cut to: Shot of the Morgue building, and the front door

31. INT. Dark Room. DAY.
(Luc is preparing photographs in liquid. Tru knocks on his door. Luc covers it over with a black board)

LUC
Come in

 (Tru enters)

TRU
Hey

LUC
Hey

TRU
Thought I might find you in here

LUC
Yeah, a photographer in a darkroom. Go figure

TRU
I’m sorry I lied. I only met Mark because I was worried about him. It won’t happen again

LUC
The first time we went out, you warned me there’d be times you’d take off, without explanation. And before today, I was okay with that. But now I’m curious, when you leave, where do you go?

TRU
Luc…

LUC
Come on! You said you were gonna be honest with me

TRU
And I will

LUC
So tell me. What’s the deal? Do you have some secret life? Another guy stashed somewhere?

TRU
Of course not

LUC
Then why won’t you tell me what’s going on with you?

(Tru looks down to the floor)

Great. Honesty.

TRU
Hey. Luc…

LUC
It’s okay. Because we’re just starting. It’s better this happened now instead of later

TRU
Listen, if you’re looking for neat and easy, then yeah, you’re probably right. You’ve got the wrong girl. But if you think you can handle something a little more complicated, then stick around. You won’t be sorry

(They stare at each other for several seconds. Tru’s cellphone rings)

LUC
Yeah…

TRU
Hello?

DAVIS (voice-over)
I need to see you. Now

TRU (snapping the phone shut)
I’ve gotta go. Davis needs me

LUC
Yeah, I heard that before

32. INT. Morgue Office. DAY.
(Tru and Davis are sitting at the computer.)

DAVIS
I finished running the numbers through the simulator

TRU
And?

DAVIS
Well based on the victim’s own height and weight, as well as the location and moderate depth of the wounds, I believe that the killer was approximately 5’ 4”, right-handed, and lacking upper body strength. Most likely a female. What do you think?

TRU
I think you just described me

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images as they rewind]

33. INT. Morgue Office. DAY

DAVIS
Don’t go putting words into my mouth. I still don’t think you did it

TRU
5’> 4”, right-handed, my apartment, my knife, who else could…

[Flashback of JULIE: “I’ll deal with my ex’s my way, Tru”]

Julie!

DAVIS
Who?

TRU
Mark’s ex-girlfriend. She and I are about the same size

DAVIS
Well there you go. Now all you have to do is go to the party, keep an eye on Mark, and if the ex shows up, you and I will be there to stop her

TRU
And if I’m the killer?

DAVIS
I will not let you make the same mistake twice

Cut to: Flashesof Tru’s apartment block from different angles – NIGHT

Cut to: People walking down the corridor to Tru’s apartment

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s front door, with the “Mammoth Party” sign on it

34. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(The music blares loudly. Tru walks through the people)

MARTY
Hey, Tru! Cool party! It’s good to see you again!

 (He hugs her tightly)

TRU
Thanks Marty, glad you could make it

(Tru walks on again, someone grabs her shoulders. Tru turns round to see Brian standing there)

BRIAN
Hey, neighbour! Kicking party!

TRU
Thanks, neighbour

BRIAN
You okay? You look a little worried

TRU
Last party I had was kind of a disaster

BRIAN
Oh, before I moved in I guess. That’s okay, don’t worry about it. If things start to slow down, I’ll go get my karaoke machine. People love that stuff!

(Tru nods, smiles walks away near to Harrison and Lindsey. Camera moves over to them)

HARRISON
So uh, here’s a little something from me to you

 (he hands her a box)

I know you got like a ton, but this one’s supposed to be pretty rare

LINDSEY (holding up a PEZ dispenser)
Oh my God! Popeye, 1952, blue base, no feet. There was only like 2000 of these made! How did you know?

HARRISON
You said something about a collection once. I guess I wanted you to know that I was listening

 (Lindsey laughs and hugs him)

35. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
 (Lindsey and Tru are talking)

LINDSEY
Look what your brother gave me!

TRU
Sorry. He means well!

LINDSEY
Are you kidding? I love it!

TRU
You do?

LINDSEY
Yeah! I don’t know, I’m thinking maybe I was wrong about him. Maybe he is special

TRU
You haven’t seen Mark, have you?

LINDSEY
As in, your ex? Why would he be here?

TRU
I invited him

LINDSEY
What? Why would you do that? What about Luc?

TRU
It’s a long story

(Tru looks around the room, looking worried)

LINDSEY
Hey, you know what you need? Some of my special punch

TRU
Thanks, but not tonight

(She walks away from Lindsey. Camera shows Davis coming in through the front door)

TRU
Hi

DAVIS (hands her some flowers)
How’s it going?

TRU
No sign of Mark or Julie yet, but it’s still early. I’m glad you’re here

DAVIS
Well, thanks for having me. Where should I stand?

36. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Lindsey waves the PEZ dispenser at Harrison, who smiles and waves. Lindsey sets a lime down on the chopping board and looks around for the knife)

LINDSEY
Where is that knife I bought?

BRIAN
Need something? Cause if you do I just live right next door

LINDSEY (holding the lime up)
Got a knife?

37. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
 (Tru is talking to Sam)

SAM
…now I’m selling shoes in my dad’s store until I can reapply. How about you?

(Tru is watching Lindsey cutting the lime with a carving knife)

TRU
Could you excuse me one sec?

SAM
Yeah, no problem

 (Tru hurries over to Lindsey)

TRU
Where’d you get that?

LINDSEY
Your neighbour. I can’t find the one I bought today, have you seen it?

TRU
No, ah, just be careful okay?

LINDSEY
Okay…

HARRISON (appearing at Tru’s shoulder)
Hey sis! You got a sec?

(Tru watches Lindsey drop the knife into the sink, then turns away with Harrison)

So, uh, I don’t think its gonna happen for me and Linds

TRU
But she loved your present!

HARRISON
Yeah, but she’s so into me now, it’s…sort of a turn-off!

 (Tru sighs)

You mind if I turn on the TV, check out some scores?

TRU (seeing Mark enter the apartment)
Yeah, whatever

HARRISON
Okay

(He moves to the TV and almost knocks the vase over. He moves it over to the side)

38. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru goes over to Mark at the door)

MARK
Hey

TRU
You made it

MARK
Yeah, yeah, sorry I’m late, my class ran kind of long

TRU
Not a problem, I’m just glad you’re here

MARK
Yeah me too, hey do you have a second?

TRU
Sure

MARK
It’s kind of loud in here; do you think we can go to the roof?

TRU
Uh, I’m the hostess. I shouldn’t…

MARK
Come on, it’ll take seconds

(he steers her towards the door)

39. EXT. Rooftop. NIGHT.

MARK
So I thought you had a boyfriend. What happened? He go missing or…?

TRU
No, he’s not here

MARK
Ah…trouble in paradise?

TRU
Something like that

MARK
Trust me; he’s a fool to walk away from a girl like you. Take it from someone who knows

TRU
Thanks

(Several seconds silence. Then Mark leans down to kiss her. Tru pushes him away)

TRU
What are you doing?!

MARK
Sorry, you invited me to your party, and I…

TRU
Mark, I told you, I just wanna be friends! (she turns to go)

MARK
But friends isn’t enough

 (He grabs her arm)

I won’t give you up, Tru

TRU (yanking her arm away)
You’re gonna have to!

(Mark puts a hand on the door to stop Tru leaving, Tru tries to run but Mark still has hold of her and she falls to the ground. Tru picks up a shard of glass and jumps to her feet, holding it in front of her threateningly. Mark backs off with his hands raised)

[Flashback of Tru at the Morgue: “Maybe he got violent, maybe I fought back!”]

TRU
Look, just stay away from me Mark. For your own good

(she drops the glass and runs through the door)

MARK
Tru…

40. INT. apartment corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru walks down the corridor, sees Sam coming the other way.)

TRU
Downstairs, hook a right. Anywhere in the alley

SAM
You rock!

(Tru walks in to her apartment, and says Bye to a guest who is leaving. She walks over to Lindsey)

LINDSEY
So your brother took off on me

TRU
You’re kidding

LINDSEY
Yeah, he said something about a card game downtown and then he just split, can you believe that?

 (Lindsey picks up a trashcan)

TRU
What’s that for?

LINDSEY
Oh, your vase. Sam knocked it over

TRU (sighing)
I shouldn’t have let him drink so much tonight

LINDSEY
It wasn’t really a drunk thing, it was more like an angry thing

TRU
What do you mean?

LINDSEY
He got all worked up over some professor that screwed him over, cost him a slot in med school

[Flashback of Sam saying: “This jerk professor wouldn’t give me a make-up”]

[Flashback of Davis saying: “The killer is approximately 5’ 4”, right-handed…”]

[Flashback of Sam drinking beer from a bottle in his right hand]

[Flashback of Mark saying “Meet me upstairs then, on the roof”]

[Flashback of Sam patting Tru’s shoulder in the corridor, then dashing off]

TRU
Sam

(She turns to run, stopping to look in the sink. The knife is gone. Tru opens her front door and runs out of the apartment)

41. EXT. Rooftop. NIGHT.
(Sam is holding Mark, the knife in his hand)

SAM
Johns Hopkins! The most prestigious medical school in this entire country! And they wanted me!

MARK
Sam, I’ll make a telephone call…

SAM
No

MARK
I’ll explain what happened

SAM
Come on, it’s too late for that now! It took me months, and I was finally getting my life back together, and then you just go and show up at my friend’s party?

(Camera shows Mark’s hands which are covered in blood from defending himself)

I just knew I couldn’t let it go this time. I couldn’t let it go!

(Tru comes running out onto the rooftop)

TRU
Put it down, Sam!

SAM
Tru, this is the guy! This is the guy I was telling you about!

TRU
You’re drunk. You don’t wanna do this

SAM
I had a plan! I had one chance, Tru, and he…he took it from me

TRU
So take it back

SAM
What are you talking about?

TRU
If you don’t like the way things went down the first time, do something about it

SAM
I...I am!

TRU
No, you’re giving up. If you hurt Mark, your life actually becomes the sob story you think it is. You’ll get to spend the next 20 years in a cell feeling sorry for yourself, is that what you really want?

(Sam is crying, shaking his head)

SAM
God…

(He glares at Mark, still holding the knife to his throat. Then he shoves Mark away, drops the knife on the ground, and goes through the roof’s door, back to the corridor)

MARK
Tru, I don’t know how to thank you

TRU
You could say goodbye

(Mark looks at her for a few seconds, then exits the rooftop.)

Cut to: Shot of Tru, standing alone on the roof

42. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.

DAVIS
Ex-student with a carving knife on the roof. Simulator would’ve never figured that one out

TRU
I still don’t get how Mark made it all the way back down here with a knife in his chest

DAVIS
Well, he loved you Tru. That always makes a person stronger

 (The door opens. Luc enters)

LUC
Hey. I hope I’m not too late

DAVIS
You know what, I’ll just see you guys at work

TRU
Thanks, D

(Davis leaves. Luc comes further in)

LUC
So. I’ve been thinking

TRU
About?

LUC
That nothing good comes easy. If I need to work a little harder to keep you in my life, then so be it. I have a feeling you’re worth it

TRU
Well, what about when I take off? Think you can handle it?

LUC
I guess we’ll find out

(he reaches into his jacket and takes out a single rose, handing it to Tru)

Sorry I missed your party

TRU
Well, it’s not over yet

LUC
No?

TRU
No. Not tonight
