Night in the city. Jane runs down a sidewalks and across the street. She stops a moment and looks around, then continues to run. She runs down an alley. As she passes a square garbage bin, John reaches an arm around her waist and pulls her back. She leans her back against the dumpster.
Tarzan/John: You alright?
Jane: Yeah, I'm fine.
Tarzan/John: I move fast.
Jane: I move fast.
She jokingly shoves him slightly.
Jane: You move ridiculously fast. You should consider a career in pro sports.
John looks puzzled. Jane notices.
Jane: I'll explain that later.
Tarzan/John: Are we close?
Jane points ahead.
Jane: Yeah, a couple blocks down there on 18th street. It was confiscated in a drug bust.
Tarzan/John: What's a drug bust?
Jane: When you get into pro sports, you'll figure it out. It should be empty, it should be safe.
Jane jogs ahead. John follows. Precinct. Lieutenant and Sam talking as they walk.
Lieutenant: Where the hell are they?
Sam: I said I don't know.
Lieutenant: Gene said you were with them in the woods.
Sam: I was there to keep Detective Taylor from killing them, but then they disappeared after that.
Lieutenant: With your help.
Lieutenant says turning to Sam a moment as they both continue to walk.
Sam: No sir, no.
Lieutenant: I'm fed up with this Sullivan.
They enter Lieutenant's office.
Lieutenant: If you're lying, you'll go down with them. Aiding and abeding a fugitive.
Sam: I'm telling you sir, John Clayton is innocent. He didn't kill Michael Foster.
Jane and John near the end of an alley.
Jane: Just around the corner.
Tarzan/John: We can't stop anywhere.
Jane: John, we can't stay on the street.
John sees a police car and grabs Jane's elbow.
Tarzan/John: Jane.
The passenger cop puts on a spotlight and shines it at them.
Passenger: Hey, it's Porter!
Jane: Run!
They run off. The police car does a 'u' turn and follows them.
Sam: Here's a witness who saw Donald Ingram tossed into a black SUV with Greystoke plates.
Hands sitting Lieutenant a paper and picks up another one.
Sam: Here, an ex-janitor who saw Michael Foster in the lobby of Greystoke the night before he died.
Hands second paper.
Sam: I'm telling you Richard Clayton is behind all this. He got to Michael somehow and now he's using Donald Ingram to frame his nephew.
Lieutenant: Yeah, maybe he killed Kennedy too. This is all you got? You bring me a conspiracy theory?
Sam: Come on, this is Jane we're talking about Lieutenant. Who you gonna trust? Her or some wacked out witness?
Lieutenant: Sorry, but it's much too little much too late.
Hands Sam a piece of paper.
Sam: What's this?
Lieutenant stands up.
Lieutenant: A warrant issued for Jane's arrest this afternoon. Stop her and you'll be next.
Lieutenant leaves. Sam remains standing there.
John and Jane emerge from an alley, go through traffic, crossing the street and head down another alley. The cop car following stops. The two cops get out and chase after them. Three more cops pursue. They reach the end of the alley. John climbs up a pipe up to a metal barrel. He reaches his hand to Jane. Jane climbs up and they barely touch fingertips
Tarzan/John: Come on.
Jane: No, no. John I can't do it.
Tarzan/John: Come on.
Jane: John, listen to me. You can get away, I can't. Go.
Tarzan/John: I won't let them take you.
Jane: They'll kill you, you know that. Go. Get out of here for me, please.
A cop runs down the alley. A cop car follows. John climbs up on top of the container out of view and looks down.
Cop: Get on the ground!
Jane raises her hands and drops to her knees. John is angry. Jane gets cuffed. Greystoke building. Richard is at his desk looking through papers. A breeze stirs his papers. The french doors are open. John is standing there. Richard sees him.
Richard: John. You really have an issue with the front door, don't you?
John jumps on the the top of three steps and leans on Richard's desk.
Tarzan/John: I know what you want.
Richard puts the cap on his pen, sets it down, then looks up at John.
Richard: What's that?
Tarzan/John: You want me to stay here.
Richard remains silent.
Tarzan/John: Help Jane. Stop all of this.
He tips his head to the left slightly, then stands upright and walks around Richard's desk to stand at Richard's right still facing him. Richard remains where he's at half looking over his shoulder to John.
Tarzan/John: And I'll stay.
Greystoke Building. Day. John is sitting on the floor holding his knees rocking slightly, his hair in a ponytail. Richard enters holding a tray of food. He closes the door. He walks across the small room and sets the tray in front of a mirror, then sits down in a chair next to John.
Richard: John, I want to thank you for cooperating this morning. I know it was hard, but you go through it and I'm proud of you.
John continues to rock.
Richard: John, the legal process is just beginning. The judge freed you on bail, but you have to go back to court and tell the judge your story. Then it'll go to trial, it'll take weeks.
John looks at Richard a moment still rocking.
Tarzan/John: Trial?
Richard: Yes, John, a murder trial.
Tarzan/John: I didn't kill anyone.
Richard: Yeah, I know that's what you believe.
John glares at Richard. He stops rocking and jumps to his feet.
Tarzan/John: Where's Jane?
Richard: I imagine she's still in jail.
John inhales deeply through is nose.
Tarzan/John: You said you'd help her.
Sounding a little angry. Richard stands and faces John as he talks.
Richard: Listen, I will get her the best legal help that I can. But she's got a lot to account for. And there was an eye witness.
John grunts, throws his fists down in anger, then goes to the mirror and hangs from an above bar.
Tarzan/John: You made that man lie.
Richard: Please, calm down! This is exactly what got you in trouble before. If you can't control your temper-
John jumps down and faces Richard.
Tarzan/John: Why are you doing this?
Richard: I don't know what you're talking about.
John grabs Richard's left shoulder and the side of his neck. He turns him around once, then throws him to the floor. John is breathing hard through clenched teeth. Richard sees John's right hand clenched in a fist.
Tarzan/John: I didn't kill anyone.
A group of men come in.
Tarzan/John: You lie!
He brings his arm up to swing down on Richard when the men grab him.
Tarzan/John: You lie! You lie!
He sceams struggling as the men pull him back and Richard gets up. John starts to scream in agner. Richard nods to one man. They give John a shot in the neck. The men lay him on his back and hold him down. Richard and two women are looking at John through the other side of the mirror.
Richard: We made tremendous progress when we brought him back from the jungle. His inpulse, his rage is...
Psyciatrist: I need to spend more time with him. But I'd say insanity plea's highly possible.
View pans to behind Ricahrd looking at John being strapped down to the bed.
Psyc: You need to understand what that means though.
Richard looks at her.
Psyc: If the state mandates continuing treatment, he'll be in your care for the rest of his life.
Richard looks to John.
Psyc: Are you ready to take on that burden?
Richard: Whatever my nephew needs.
Sam and a uniforn policeman walk down a hall full of cells. They stop at one. Sam shakes his head seeing Jane sitting inside on a bench. She sees Sam.
Sam: M, m, m, m.
Jane looks away and stands up to stand at the bars.
Jane: Stop lookig at me like that.
Sam: I'm sorry.
Jane looks at him, then away.
Jane: Yep, still doing it.
Sam: I just never thought I'd see the day. Jane Porter in jail.
Jane makes eye contact.
Sam: You know what your first mistake was?
Jane: Not listening to you?
Sam: (Gasps) Damn. Rehabilitation does work.
Jane: You're enjoying yourself.
Sam: You kow what? I actually am under the circumstances.
Jane: What circumstances?
Sam steps back. Unifrom unlocks the door.
Sam: You're free to go. Yeah, that's right. We can hook up after my shift is over.
Jane goes to the doorway and steps out. Sam joins her.
Jane: I don't understand. What happened?
Sam: Kathleen Clayton just paid your bail.
Kathleen Clayton's house.
Jane: Ms. Clayton, I can't thank you enough.
As they walk down the hall.
Kathleen: For what?
Jane: Posting my bail. You didn't have to do that.
They stop a moment.
Kathleen: Come on. We're partners in crime. You aided, I abeded. Listen, we got much bigger problems. I just talked to the D.A.'s office. He says Richard has John at Greystoke.
Jane:What?
Kathleen: He's going to have him declared legally insane.
Kathleen walks over to her desk. Jane follows.
Jane: What? Why would he do that?
Kathleen: Because my brother's a very smart man. He's thought this thing through ten moves ahead of everyone else.
She stands behind her desk.
Jane: I'm sorry. Thought what through?
Kathleen: Once John's declared insane, someone gets custody of him and his Greystoke shares. So, while I'm busy
She sits in her chair.
Kathleen: Fending off these aiding and abeding charges, Richard is assembling this panel of experts saying he's the man for the job.
Jane: John won't survive locked up like that. Alright? We got to get him out of there.
Kathleen: If Richard's got the D.A.'s ear, I have to go higher. I've got friends on the bench. I could get an injuncetiuon to stop custody proceedings.
Jane: John doesn't have to plead insanity.
Kathleen: This isn't about the truth. This is about what we can prove.
Jane: Alright, then we'll prove it.
Jane gets her cell phone out and turns around taking a couple of steps.
Kathleen: How?
Jane: Doanld Ingram. Hey Sam, is your shift over yet?
Sam: Yeah, I'm off now.
Jane: Great 'cause I need a ride and I need another favor.
Richard sitting on a couch.
Richard: Why'd you make me do this?
John's wrists are strapped down. Another strap is across his chest. John is looking away from Richard.
Tarzan/John: Let me go.
Richard: What good would that do? You'd just be back out on the streets putting yourself in danger. For what?
Tarzan/John: Jane.
Richard: You got to start thinking of yourself, John. The sooner we get through this trial, the sooner we can get back to work.
John moves his eyes left. Richard leans forward.
Richard: I have so much to teach you.
Tarzan/John: You won't.
John's eyes roll back and his eyes close. Richard stands and leans to John.
Richard: John? Is he okay?
Psyciatrist walks in and stands on the other side of the bed.
Psyc: We gave him a sedative.
Ricahrd looks from her to John.
Richard: I don't know. It's more than that.
Psyc: He just needs to rest.
He looks back at her.
Richard: I hope you're right.
Richard stands upright. John's eyes remain closed.
Sam and Jane driving down road.
Sam: Listen to me crazy woman. There is no way you're gonna get Donald Ingram to tell the truth. There's no way. The man's a looney bird. Richard Clayton's got him scared out of his mind.
Jane: I'm not gonna ask him to tell the truth. I got another idea.
Sam: Well, good luck. He's at city hall. And in case you forgot, you're not exactly the pride of the force these days. No one's gonna let you near the guy.
Jane: Nope, probably not me.
Sam: Yeah, well it sure in the hell won't be me.
Jane: Sam, about that favor.
Sam and Jane make eye cotanct. Donald Ingram walks down the hall. A lawyer and a uniformed cop follow. They walk through a large doorway.
Donald: How long do I have to stay in that horrible hotel?
Lawyer: Just until the hearing.
Donald: That's two days from now.
They come up to an elevator.
Donald: You know that hotel doesn't even change their air filter. That's how you catch legionaires.
Lawyer pushes a button. The elevetor door opens. Sam is standing in the right corner. Donald takes a breath and steps in. He covers his mouth with is right hand and stands in the middle. The lawyer and the cop enter too. As the elevator moves, Sam looks to Donald's right pocket on his jacket. He slips a cell phone in. Jane is outside in Sam's car in the passenger seat on her cell phone. The elevetor doors open. The uniform cop, lawyer, and Donald step out. As they walk away, the cell phone rings.
Lawyer: You got a phone call.
Donald cautiously removes the cell phone, opens it, pushes a button, and holds it up near, but not on, his ear.
Donald: Hello?
Jane: Donald, it's Jane Porter.
Donald: No, no, I can't.
Jane: It's alright. No one knows I'm talking to you.
Donald: This isn't really a very good time right now. Could you call back later?
Jane: Donald, you don't need to say a word. I just need you to listen to me.
Donald: Listen to what?
Jane: I know you're scared. I know Richard Clayton threatened to hurt you if you don't lie on the stand, but I also know you wish you never got involved in any of this. That if you could find a way out, you'd take it, am I right? Donald?
Donald: I'm listening.
Jane: Okay. If we can get your testimony thrown out, you'll be free of Richard and you'll be free of the court, but I need your help to do that.
Donald steps forward.
Donald: I don't understand.
Jane: Um, do you wear glasses? Anything that might have impared your vision?
The cop and lawyer follow. Donald stops.
Jane: Donald help me out. I know that you have health issues. Any medication, side effects we could point to?
Donald: I'm under a lot of stress.
Jane: Are you saying anti-anxiety meds?
Donald: You should talk to Dr. Toll.
Jane: Dr. Toll?
Donald: I have to go.
He hangs up, closes the phone. The lawyer tries to take Donald's arm.
Donald: Please don't touch me.
Jane hangs up. Sam and Jane follow Dr. Toll into the waiting lounge.
Dr. Toll: You understand doctor paitient privelages protects any conversations I've had with Donald.
Jane: Unless it goes to credibility as a witness.
Dr. Toll stops and turns around.
Dr. Toll: Ask what you're gonna ask.
Jane: We just want to know if you've prescribed any medications to Donald that impared his judgement or his perception.
A woman secretary standing nearby listens.
Dr. Toll: No.
Sam: That's it? Just 'no'? Out of all the pills this guy takes
Jane sees the woman listening.
Sam: None cause drowsiness, blurred vision, or anything? You do know we can subpena a list of the medications you've prescribed, right?
Dr.
Toll: Go
ahead, my answer will still be the same. Now can I get back to my patients
please?
Jane turns back to Dr. Toll.
Jane: Yes, thank you very much.
Dr. Toll: Right.
He walks between them and out.
Sam: You think Clayton got to this guy? Paid him of to stonewall the defense?
Jane: I don't know.
Sam's cell phone rings.
Sam: Yeah?
Warren: (On Phone) Sullivan, it's Warren. Hey, got a minute?
Sam steps away. Jane goes to the secretary who was listening who is now sitting at her desk.
Jane: Hi.
Woman: Yes.
Jane: I could'nt help but notice that you seemed to recognize Donald Ingram's name.
She smiles.
Woman Secretary: Yeah, um, Donald's sweet.
Jane: Did you hear what we were talking about?
W.S.: Yes I did.
Jane: I'm going to give you my phone number.
Writes on a small notepad.
Jane: If you can think of anything that can help please give me a call.
Sam walks over as Jane hands it to her. Jane and Sam stand in a doorway. Sam looks troubled.
Jane: What?
Sam: I asked a friend at dispatch to keep an ear out for anything coming out of Greystokes.
Jane: And? Sam.
Greystoke building.
Psyc: Get a bag. Call an EMS right now.
John's shirt is open. One man starts bagging. Another does CPR on John's chest. Richard enters.
Richard: What's going on?
Psyc: Sir, we've already called 911. There's an ambulance on the way. He was doing fine, sleeping. Then he suddenly started to code.
Richard: What's wrong with him?
Psyc: There was no event. No arithmea. His heart just stopped.
John on strecher being wheeled to ambulance. Sam and Jane arrive. Jane gets out.
Jane: John.
She goes up and sees John. She turns to Richard.
Jane: What happened? What's wrong with him?
Richard: I don't know.
She turns to the paramedic.
Jane: What's wrong with him?
Paramedic: He's not breathing. We can't get a pulse.
Jane turns to Richard.
Jane: He's not breathing? What did you do to him?
Richard: I don't know.
Jane: I'm gonna ride with him.
Richard: I don't want her riding with him!
As Jane hops in, Sam stops Richard.
Sam: Relax, I have some questions about what happened here.
Richard steps back. Nash tries to go.
Sam: Sir, I'd step back if I was you.
Nash stops.
The ambulance speeds around the corner, sirens wailing. Monitor shows flatline. Paramedic bags. Jane holds John's right hand. Paramedic puts bag aside and does compressions. The monitor shows flatline.
Jane: If you can make it through anything else, you can make it through this. Don't you leave me.
The paramedic stops and sits back. Jane and paramedic make eye contaact.
Par.: I'm sorry.
Jane: John, you can't be gone. There's so much I didn't say or do.
Her eyes glaze.
Jane: I'm sorry John. I'm so sorry.
She kisses his hand and holds it to her cheek. The monitor begins to beep. Jane looks at the monitor. John opens his eyes looking at Jane.
Jane: Oh my God.
Paramedic looks shocked at the monitor.
Jane: You're back.
Tarzan/John: I never left.
Jane: Stop the ambulance!
Par.: He still needs to be checked out.
John sits up and growls slightly at the paramedic.
Jane: I think he's okay.
The ambulance stops. Jane and John get out. They run.
Jane: We're going straight.
After they run past a street, Richard turns a corner and stops at the stopped ambulance. He gets out. Jane and John cross the street. He goes to paramedic who is picking up wires what had been taped to John's chest.
Richard: Why did you stop?
Paramedic turns around. Richard comes up to him.
Richard: Where's my nephew?
Par.: I don't know.
Richard: What do you mean you don't know? Did she do something with him?
Par.: He got out on his own.
Richard grabs paramedic by jacket and slams his back on the back door and holds him.
Richard: He was code blue five minutes ago!
Jane and John continue to run. Richard lets go and turns around.
Richard: Find him.
To Nash. They get in their car and leave. Jane and John enter an alley. Jane pulls sleeves of jacket down. John holds his arms crossed obviously cold.
Jane: I think we're alright. You're freezing aren't you?
Two men with a coat rack pass.
Jane: Hey, you know what? I'll take one of those. I need one of those. Here, $20. I need a coat.
She grabs one off the rack.
Man: Hey! Hey!
Jane hands it to John who puts it on.
Jane: Relax I paid you.
Jane and John continue.
Jane: So, how'd you do it?
Tarzan/John: Do what?
Jane: That little hybernation trick where you slowed your heart to nothing?
Tarzan/John: You can't do it?
As they round a corner.
Jane: No, John. I can't do it. Most people don't play dead.
They stop and face each other. Jane sees his wrist.
Jane: How did you get these bruises? Did he do this to you?
John pulls his wrist back and crosses his arms. He looks down the alley the way they had come.
Tarzan/John: I did.
He looks to her.
Tarzan/John: I was trying to get out.
He looks back down the alley.
Jane: Alright, we're gonna beat this. Donald Ingram wants to help.
John looks up to the left.
Jane: And if we kill his testimony they have no case.
John looks at her.
Tarzan/John: It doesn't matter!
Jane: What do you mean 'it doesn't matter'?
Tarzan/John: It won't end.
Jane: Look, I know this isn't going to be easy, but you have to go back into custody through the pretrial hearing. But John, if we get this case thrown out-
Tarzan/John: JANE!
She stops.
Tarzan/John: Your rules will never end this.
He heads of some stairs. Jane starts to follow.
Jane: John wait. Wait. Where are you going?
He continues and goes out of sight.
Kathleen's place. Jane at window. Kathleen on couch.
Kathleen: So, no sign of John anywhere?
Jane walks away from the window and stands at other end of couch.
Jane: No, I looked everywhere I could think of. Nothing. The hearing's tomorrow.
She begins to pace.
Kathleen: He'll come back.
Jane: Yeah, that's not what I'm afraid of. I'm afraid of what he'll do before he gets here.
Sam enters.
Sam: Ms. Clayton.
He goes to Jane.
Sam: Well, well, well. My partners out of jail and already she's helped John Clayton escape already. You are one hell of a gangster.
He smiles. Jane smiles.
Jane: My last crime, I promise. What do you got?
He unfolds papes in his hand. He hands her one.
Sam: Nothing good. I've been covering the wires like you asked. Over the last day since John went awol, there's been two suspected stray dog attacks. Bodega here, Butcher shop there.
Kathleen: So he's been eating at least.
Sam looks at Kathleen, then back to Jane.
Sam: This is what got my attention.
Jane: Yeah. They're both within a couple of blocks of Greystoke.
Sam: So it's what you've been thinking? He's going after his Uncle?
Jane: Yeah.
Sam: Now you know if he gets him, it won't matter what happens with this Mike thing. 'Cause this is deja vu all over again. Only ten times worse. 'Cause this time he could be guilty.
Jane looks to Kathleen.
Jane: I hate to say this, but I think you'd better go warn your brother.
Jane heads across the room and grabs her jacket off a chair. Kathleen turns to her.
Kathleen: So what are you gonna do?
Jane: I'm gonna go find John.
Overhead view of traffic at night. Jane looks around as she drives. A woman comes on the radio.
Woman on radio: You're the smart one. You got the message. You want to live. So how come your payback for finally quitting is headaches, fatigue, and diziness? Fight back with Nikidine gum.
Jane turns the radio off. She pulls over and gets her cell phone.
Sam: Sullivan.
Jane: Sam.
Sam: Yo.
Jane: It's Jane. Can you drop what you're dong for a sec? I think I got an idea.
Sam: About what?
Jane: Donald Ingram. What if it's not the meds he took, what if it's the meds he quit taking?
Sam: Hey, I'll dig around on that.
Jane: Yeah.
Sam: Alright.
Jane hangs up. She puts the phone down and looks thoughtful. Greystoke building. Kathleen and Nash enter.
Richard: Kate, can we do this another time? I have a fund raiser with Senator Hopkins this evening.
His tie is undone, he holds a drink.
Kathleen: You shouldn't go.
Richard: Why's that?
Kathleen: You've been looking for John. Well, he's here.
Richard: Here?
Kathleen: Close anyway. He's out there waiting for you.
Richard: How do you know?
Kathleen: I know.
Richard: What is this? Some sort of threat?
Kathleen: No, it's a warning.
Richard: Why would you warn me?
He asks as he turns and walks to his desk. Kathleen follows.
Kathleen: You know, I have mixed feelings abour that myself. You see, I would love to watch him ring your scrawny little neck, but I don't want to see John in that much trouble.
She stops at the bottom three steps. Richard goes to his desk.
Richard: And what am I supposed to tell the Senator? I can't make dinner because I'm hiding?
Kathleen stays quiet, Richard leans on his desk.
Richard: Besides, if what you're telling me is the truth, it only helps me.
Kathleen goes up the steps.
Kathleen: How so, Richard?
Richard: When I had to tell the authorities about John, he's a fugitive again. The more he runs, the more wild and violent he behaves, the more he proves my case for me.
Kathleen: Well, did you not hear me? You're in danger. This whole thing has gotten out of hand. You've become obsessed.
Richard smiles as he stands.
Richard: Am I?
He picks up his drink, goes around, and sits at his desk.
Kathleen: Yes, for controlling Greystokes, for controlling John for molding him in your own image. He's not the crazy one here, Richard.
She steps up to lean on his desk.
Kathleen: Don't you see? He is not going to stop fighting you. Look at the lengths he's gone to already. You can't keep treating him this way.
Richard: How am I treating him? I'm impressed with him. I mean, the cunning it takes to escape like that.
He picks up his drink.
Richard: So, he makes a move, I'll counter move.
Kathleen: It's just a game to you, isn't it? Okay, you make any move you want to. I want you to know that I'm gonna be there too. I won't let you hurt John no matter what.
Richard: You sure you're up for it, little sis? It might get bloody.
Woman at Doctor's office who Jane talked to is locking up. Sam steps up startling her.
Sam: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Listen, I was here before. I'm a friend of Donald Ingram's. You remember?
Woman Secretary: Yeah.
Sam: You mind if I ask you a couple of questions before you lock up?
She looks around.
W.S.: I don't know.
Sam: Look, I don't want to get you in trouble with your boss or anything. But...you like Donald, right?
W.S.: Yeah.
Sam: Well, I like Doanld too. But Donald's in some serious trouble right now and he needs our help. If you don't mind, just a couple of questions.
Richard swallows his drink.
Richard: Yeah, well, I'd love to keep chatting
He stands up.
Richard: But I really do have to get ready to go, so.
Kathleen stands upright, turns and starts to walk away.
Richard: I'm not scared of John. But I'll take the necessary precautions, thanks. With John and me, it's not a game, you know.
Kathleen stops in the doorway.
Richard: It's a fight, it's almost primal.
She turns to him.
Kathleen: Animal metaphores. Cute. Just remember one thing.
Richard: What's that?
Kathleen: I can be a real bitch.
She leaves.
John jumps onto a rooftop, jogs across the ledge, then squats down at a corner. Jane is stopped still in her car. Her cell phone rings.
Jane: Hey, what do you got?
Sam is driving in his own car as he talks to Jane.
Sam: You're right. Donald Ingram stopped taking his anti anxiety meds a few days before the accident. He had a reaction.
Jane: What kind of reaction?
Sam: He shows up at his doctor's office complaining of headaches, dizziness, and, are you ready for this? Hallusinations.
Jane giggles. Sam smiles.
Jane: What? This is perfect. Sam, thank you so much. Really. You're aboslutely-
She sees Richard across the street entering his limo.
Sam: Absolutely what? You were just about to compliment me.
John watches Richard from the rooftop.
Jane: Listen, it's Clayton. I gotta go.
She hangs up. She puts the car in gear. The limo pulls away from the curb. John stands up, his right fist clenched at his side. He turns and walks away. Jane starts to follow when something hits one of her tires. She puts the car in park, gets out, and walks around to see a piece of metal in her tire. She looks up at the buidings.
Jane: John.
She stands up, pulls her cell phone out, and hails a taxi.
Jane: Hey.
Sam: So any sign of monkey boy yet?
Jane: Yeah, sort of. He slashed my tire.
Sam: He slashed your what?
Jane: Taxi! Yeah, no. John's going after Clayton and I don't really think he wants me to stop him.
She gets in the taxi.
Jane: Listen, Clayton's in a limo. The plates are ACX 7015. I'm thinking a car like that might have a vehicle recovery system. Run it stolen and see if you can get me a location.
Sam: Alright, you got it.
Jane: Thanks.
She hangs up.
Richard's
limo turns onto a bridge. A broken window is heard up front. Richard looks to
Nash.
Richard: What the hell was that?
Nash: I don't know.
Nash pushes a button lowering the window between them and the driver. They see a large hole in the windshield and the driver missing. The car drives to the right. It hits a curb and stops. The right front tire deflates. Richard looks out the back window, then up front.
Richard: What's going on?
Nash gets out on the right and closes the door. He circles around back and walks past Richard's door to the front of the car. Richard opens the door and steps out and closes the door.
Richard: We're being hunted.
Nash turns and heads to Richard.
Nash: Better get in the car and lock the door.
Richard: I can take care of myself.
Nash: You pay me to protect you so let me do my job, will ya?
As he opens Richard's door. Richard sighs. He gets in and closes the door. Nash goes up to the side of the bridge and looks down. He sees train tracks, a street light, and a burning barrel. John climbs up and squats on the other railing looking at Nash. Richard waits, then hears a grunt of pain. Richard gets out of the car. He closes the door. He slowly walks to the front of the car. He walks up to the railing on the bridge. John pops up from underneath, grabs Richard's collar with one hand, and throws him over the bridge to the ground. Richard tumbles down the slight hill. He stands up holding his left arm at his side, his right hand on his left elbow. There is a small bleeding cut on his left cheekbone.
Jane: Find the limo?
Sam: Marchall Drive. In the '90's. Jane, the car stopped. It hasn't moved in a couple of minutes.
Jane: Alright, thanks.
She hangs up and leans up to tell the driver directions.
Richard walks forward.
Richard: John! I understand how confusing and frightening all this must be for you. I know I hurt you. I just couldn't let you run around on the streets like a madman risking your life.
Richard walks and looks around as he talks.
Richard: This, this is-
He trips and lands face first.
Richard: This isn't the risk that you needed.
As he gets up.
Richard: You need an edcuation. You need-
He turns hearing a snarl/growl and sees a glimpse of John's shadow.
Richard: Everything I did was for you. For you! And your Father. I just wanted to do what he would have wanted me to do.
John looks at Ricahrd from above, then looks left.
Richard: He wanted you to be a Clayton!
John steps back out of view. A burning barrel comes from above. Richard looks up, sees it, and dodged just in time.
Richard: Come on, John.
He stands.
Richard: We're family!
He turns and looks up from where the barrel came from. Behind, Nash is knocked into Richard. They both land on the ground. Richard sees Nash has been beaten in the face. Richard takes Nash's handgun. He stands up and aims it as he looks around. John leaps over a car, pushes off the top as leverage. As he lands, he puts both hands on Richard's left hand holding the gun, and knocks him back by hitting his elbow in Richard's chest. Richard falls back and hits the ground. John stands upright looking down at Richard. A taxi stops next to the limo. Jane gets out, the taxi drives away. She goes to the front of the car and sees a large hole in the windshield. She looks around. Richard rolls onto his stomach. John grabs a pipe from the back of the car. He goes up, grabs the back of Richard's jacket, and slams his back against the car.
Richard: Don't do it, John.
Tarzan/John: You're gonna die.
Jane comes running around the corner.
Jane: John! Leave him alone!
Tarzan/John: Back!
He turns to her.
Jane: This isn't gonna solve anything!
Tarzan/John: We tried your way.
Looking at Richard putting his hand on Richard's left cheek.
Tarzan/John: Now we try mine.
He gets ready to swing the pipe. Jane pulls a gun and fires in the air. John turns back to her.
Jane: You are not a murderer, that's not who you are.
She aims the gun to the ground and steps forward.
Jane: I know that, I know that in my heart.
John looks to Richard, then Jane.
Jane: After everything we've been through, what, you're going to prove me wrong? That was for nothing?
John looks at her a mix of sad and frustration.
Jane: You do this and you'll never see me again, you know that, right? Never.
John looks at her a moment, then hits the hood of the car. He turns back to Jane and kicks the back right tire rocking the car a little.
Jane: John!
He steps up to her.
Jane: We're gonna fix this the right way.
Tarzan/John: Your rules don't work.
Jane: I'm not asking you to trust my rules, I'm not asking you to trust my laws, I'm asking you to trust me!
She steps up to him. John looks at Richard, then back at Jane. He nods once, drops the pipe, and walks the way Jane came. Richard drops to the ground on his rear. Richard and Jane look at one another a moment, then Richard looks away as Jane follows John.
Day. Courtroom doors opened by two uniformed police. John steps over and looks in the doorway. John slowly enters seeing a lot of people sitting inside. One takes John's arm to lead him inside. John pulls his arm back. Everyone turns to see him enter. He sees Jane and goes to her. Another policeman opens the small gate to the lawyers table. He takes John's arm. John pulls it back. He steps through and begins to walk ahead to where the Judge sits. Another takes John's elbows from behind. John pulls his arms back and looks at the man. They show him to his seat. He looks to Jane as he reaches the chair.
Jane: (Quietly) It's okay.
He sits. Richard sits in the back. The Judge enters and everyone stands. John looks at everyone. Jane indicates to stand up. He looks at Jane. She tells him to turn around. He sees the Judge. Everyone sits. John looks to Jane. She nods to sit. He reaches down at the shoes. They bother his bare feet. Donald Ingram stands. He sits on the stand nervous.
Donald: I was by the window reading, well, I was a little by the window and I saw something out of my eye. The blonde man was one of them and they were struggling.
Woman Secretary from Dr. Tolls: Mr. Ingram had called Dr. Tolls office stating that he was having halucinations and blackouts. Also other symptoms which is technically what happens when you stop taking your meds.
Judge: Due to his altered perception at the time, the witness testimony is itadmissable. And there is not enough evidence to proceed to trial. I'm afriad I have to choice. Donald Ingram is excused. The charges against John Clayton are dismissed.
He slams his gavel. He leaves. Claps are heard. Sam puts his hands on Jane's shoulders. Kathleen leans forward.
Kathleen: Good work, John.
She kisses him on the cheek. She turns around standing upright. Her and Richard look at one another, then Richard walks out. Kathleen follows. Jane turns to John as he stands.
Tarzan/John: Jane. Thank you.
Jane: You're welcome, Tarzan.
John smiles as he jumps over the small rail. As they walk together out the courtroom, John stops and leans on the back of one of the audience benches.
Tarzan/John: These hurt.
Jane sees he's talking about the shoes. She looks to see the Judge out of sight, then looks back at John.
Jane: You know what? So do these.
She takes her shoes off and carries them. John takes his off and leaves them on the floor. Jane walks ahead. He pulls his tucked shirt out and follows her. They walk out going right.
