Next day. Loud sounds from upstairs. Kathleen rushes up stairs.
Kathleen: Mary, what the heck happened?
Mary: We thought he was sleeping. Dr. tried to take his blood pressure.
John throws a small table across the room. He grabs a lamp and throws it. Kathleen steps in. John slams left door.
Kathleen: John! John. It's okay, Mary. You can go.
John moves to corner.
Kathleen: John, calm down.
Tarzan/John: I want to go.
Kathleen: I can't let you go. It's the only place I can protect you against Richard.
John elbows walls.
Kathleen: John, I'm on your side. I'm your family.
Tarzan/John: So is he.
He grabs a stool and throws it at window on the other side of the room. He jumps over bed, moves some glass, and climbs down. Kathleen goes to window.
Kathleen: John!
He jumps down and leaves. Church. Police line steps as Michael's flag draped coffin descends the stairs. John watches from rooftop.
Thug 1: There she is. Right down there.
Thug 2: Why does he want us staking her out anyway?
Thug 1: He thinks she's the key to leading him to his nephew.
John hears them and spots them.
Thug 1: No sign of him.
John jumps down, crosses the street and heads up building where the men are. He climbs up with ease. Michaels' casket is put in car. John comes over edge onto the roof where the thugs are. He runs up to one, grabs back of shirt, and throws them back on the roof. Jane watches Michael's coffin, a tear rolling down her cheek. John grabs the second man by the neck, rolls down on his back, and flips the man over him. He kicks his feet up and arches to a stand. He quickly goes over and flips the first man over his head sending him to land hard on the roof. John wraps his ankles around third man's neck anf tumble rolls him aside while landing on the second man. He stands, moves his hair from his face with both hands, then turns to third thug. He grabs him by the throat, picks him up and slams his back against wall.
Tarzan/John: Leave her alone.
He tosses him aside, then leaves.
Morning sunrise. Jane in kitchen by herself drinking coffee. She puts cup down and rubs her head with one hand. There is two taps on a window. Jane goes in and sees John climb inside her bedroom window.
Jane: John, what are you doing here? Your Uncle's still looking for you.
Tarzan/John:You're hurt.
Jane: What?
Tarzan/John: Your eyes. There's pain.
Jane: You have to go. I asked you to leave.
Tarzan/John: I want to help you.
Jane: I don't care what you want. How many times do I have to tell you? And now someone is dead. Michael is dead because you won't listen. So please, leave me alone.
John leaves. Jane goes to window and grabs the left curtain. Nicki and Jane are in the kitchen.
Nicki: Can I ask you a question?
Jane: Yeah. What's up?
Nicki: Why do you have to lie to protect this John guy? Just tell the truth.
Jane: I can't.
Nicki: But he killed Michael.
Jane: I told you he didn't kill anybody. He tried to save Michael.
Nicki: Michael is dead. You were there and you know what happened. Why don't you say anything?
Jane: Because it would put John in danger. From his Uncle and from other cops.
Nicki: I don't understand.
Jane: Then you just have to trust me.
Precinct. Jane walks up to Sam and Gene.
Sam: There's gotta be something we're missing.
Gene notices Jane and nods to Sam.
Sam: Hey Jane. Are you okay?
They hug.
Jane: Yeah.
Sam: Are you sure?
Jane: Mm-hmm.
Sam: So, what are you doing back so soon, huh? I thought you were taking the week off.
Jane: I'm sick of daytime television.
Gene: Lieutenant wanted you to take it easy.
Jane: What are you guys working on?
Removes jacket.
Sam: Don't worry about it. We got it under control.
Jane: Mike's case?
Gene and Sam look at one another.
Jane: Sam, I'm alright. I want to know.
Jane moves to a desk across from Sam and leans on the desk.
Jane: Sam, come on. I'm still your partner.
Sam: Okay Jane. Here's where we're at. At first I thought the rich kids from the parking lot did it, but none of them had the size to take Mike. So now I'm thinking they had someone else there with them.
Lieutenant: Sam, something just came in. I need you to-
Sees Jane.
Jane: Sir, whatever it is, I want in on it.
Sam, Jane, and Lieutenant group.
Lieutenant: You should be home. You need the time.
Jane: Look, I gotta get my mind off... Sir, please.
Lieutenant: Come on.
They head in Lieutenant's office.
Lieutenant: Ransom demand. Fed's caught wind now they're taking point. They're gonna work the ransom drop.
Sam: Alright, what are we supposed to do?
Lieutenant: You're supposed to take care of the parents.
Sam: I don't want to be put on some parent baby sitting detail.
Jane turns form the computer pic of boy to Sam.
Jane: Sam, we should go talk with them.
John wanders the streets. Day turns to night.
Parents at precinct.
Mom: So what happens now?
Sam: The FBI will leave the ransom bag at the drop full of unmarked bills and put the entire site under surveillance. The kidnapper shows up, they'll tail him right to your son.
Dad: The e-mail says no police. What if he sees you? Maybe we should just pay.
Sam: They won't see them, sir.
Mom: My baby might be dead.
Jane: Try not to think that way. There's still a lot of hope.
Mom: It's hard to lose someone.
Jane: Jason isn't lost. We're going to help you find him.
Night raining. Jane steps out of station and sees Kathleen in limo across the street. John is on building above limo. Jane rushes over and gets in.
Jane: What are you doing here? No one can see us together.
Kathleen: I can't find John anywhere.
Have you seen him?
Jane: This morning.
Kathleen: Why didn't you bring him to me?
Jane: Because I wasn't thinking and I was angry. I told him to leave.
Kathleen: He's not safe out there. You of all people should know that.
Jane: I'm sorry. I am. Ms. Clayton, this is your family. I don't even know how I got this involved, but it's already cost me too much.
Kathleen: Let's just hope I find him before Richard does.
Jane gets out and crosses back over to station. Kathleen drives away. John watches Jane. Jane turns and looks at rooftop, then turns and walks away. John backs up, turns and walks away. He sits in an alley shivering as rain soaks him.
Day. Parents house. Mom paces. Dad sits.
Lieutenant: They'll call the second they get the suspect.
Jane: Don't worry, you're in good hands.
Mom: What's taking so long?
View of drop off. Garbage bin. Black bag of money inside. Camera in nearby window aimed at money. Five people shown with ear piece and white curl cord down neck.
Computer: You have new mail.
Mom goes over and sees photos of police.
Mom: Oh my God.
On bottom of photos-You lied to me. Jason is dead.
Precinct. Sam and Jane are sitting at their desks facing each other.
Sam: We tapped each one of these leads three times already.
Jane: We're never gonna find this kid this way.
Jane gets up and leaves. She looks up at the rooftops. She crosses the street.
Greystoke Building.
Lawyer: Mr. Clayton, that boy is heir to 1/3 this company and he's running wild in the streets. He's uncontrolable.
Richard: No, there's something that can control him. Actually, someone. I need to talk with Detective Porter.
Jane goes in an alley.
Jane: John. Where are you? I need to talk to you. If you're up there, answer me. John. John, I need your help.
She looks up, then sighs and turns and begins to walk away. John jumps down.
Tarzan/John: Jane.
Jane turns around and steps towards him.
Jane: Can you track anyone? Like you do with me?
He nods once.
Jane: I need you to find someone.
They arrive at a playground park.
Tarzan/John: The boy was here?
Jane: His dad turned around to take a phone call. When he turned back, Jason was gone.
Tarzan/John: So he's lost.
Jane: No, someone took him.
Tarzan/John: What for?
Jane: For money. This person wants money or they'll kill Jason.
John looks a moment, then looks back at Jane.
Tarzan/John: I need his scent.
He walks past her.
Jane: You need his scent. Of course you do.
Jane enters parents house and heads upstairs to Jason's room. She sees a truck with SEK on side. She goes to Jason's bed and picks up a teddy bear.
Mom: Can I help you?
Jane: I'm sorry. I um, wanted to borrow something of Jason's.
Mom: What for?
Jane: Well, we, uh, have a sort of a bloodhound.
Mom: Could that work?
Jane: I hope so.
Mom walks up and touches bear.
Mom: Please, bring him back to me.
Jane hands bear to John in park.
Jane: Will this work?
He takes the bear. He runs down sidewalk and goes around a corner. Jane follows. He stops, looks around, then jumps onto big truck. He climbs down passenger side, then hops off as truck continues. Jane stops and looks over side loosing track of John. She continues down the sidewalk when Richard pulls up and talks with her.
Jane: What are you doing here?
Richard: Looking for you.
Jane: How'd you find me?
Richard: I know people who know things. It really wasn't that complicated.
Jane: Okay, you found me. What do you want?
Richard: Just a friendly conversation, Detective.
Jane: Mr. Clayton, I'm not your friend and I never will be.
Richard: Okay, then I guess I'll get to the point. I want my nephew, I want him back.
Jane: Why?
Richard: Because he needs my help.
Jane: The sort of help where you hit him with stun guns or the help where you chain him up in a box?
Richard: Is it better to let him run around the streets like an animal? If you don't help me find him, you're going to get hurt.
Jane smiles at his remark.
Jane: I thought there'd be a threat in there somewhere.
Richard: Not by me, by John. My nephew's a savage. I have four men in the hospital to prove it. But I don't have to prove it beacuse you've seen it.
Jane: What do you mean?
Richard: You know what I find curious?
Detective Mike Foster, he was your boyfriend right? He was going to help me get
John back. Then, next thing I know, he takes a nasty dive off a ten story
building. John needs to be under constant supervision in order to be
re-habilitated. He needs phsyciatric and medical care. What do you have? Good
intentions?
Jane: Goodbye, Mr. Clayton.
She turns and begins to walk away.
Richard: Detective be reasonable before someone else gets hurt.
He says as she walks away. He gets back in passenger seat.
Richard: Stay with her.
Jane walks down alley looking up. John scoops her up next to him.
Tarzan/John: Let's go.
Richard's vehicle enters alley.
Jane and John walking on dirt road under bridge.
Jane: Okay. John I appreciate what you're doing, but you can't run off and leave me behind like that. We lost a lot of time.
Tarzan/John: This is how I hunt.
Jane: I understand that, but we got a lost little boy ot there and every second is precious.
John stops and faces her.
Tarzan/John: This is how I hunt.
Then continues walking. Jane follows.
Jane: Are we close?
Night at boat storage. John stops.
Jane: What?
Tarzan/John: The scent leads there.
He goes over boat ramp onto boat. Jane follows with flashlight and gun. John finds bed where Jason was.
Jane: This must be where they're keeping Jason.
Juice and box of crackers on floor. John passes and finds something. Jane comes up.
Tarzan/John: Who is he?
Jane: Jason's father.
Police at docks. Same night.
Sam: Just spoke to one of the feds.
Jane: And?
Sam: First, you're gonna tell me how'd you find this place?
Jane: I played out a couple of leads. Sam, what did the feds say?
Sam: What leads?
Jane: Later Sam. What'd they say?
Do they believe he would kidnap his own kid?
Sam: Yeah, they think he partnered with someone and had a minor
disagreement.
Jane: Isn't he rich?
Sam: Background check missed it the first time. Hell, his wife didn't even know.
Jane stops and turns to face Sam.
Sam: But he was well into Atlantic Casinos well over six figures. Guess he wasn't any better at cards than kidnapping.
Jane: All her money?
Sam: Family and trust. He couldn't touch it.
Jane: That kid's still out there, Sam. We gotta find him.
Jane walks to fence and goes around it.
Jane: John.
John stands up from behind oil drum.
Tarzan/John: Follow me.
She finds him at the water.
Jane: Where does the scent lead from here?
Tarzan/John: It ends. He would hurt his own child?
Jane: You really care about this kid, don't you?
Tarzan/John: When my Father died, I was lost.
Jane: You remember your Father?
Tarzan/John: A little.
He stands up and takes a few steps the way they came.
Jane: I'm going to keep looking for Jason.
Tarzan/John: I will help you.
Jane: John, you can't help. You said yourself the trail's cold. You're Uncle's still out there and he's still looking for you. You should go home to your Aunt's.
He walks off.
Jane: She's worried about you, John.
Night. Kathleen's place. Bedroom.
Kathleen: Okay, want to try this again? Look, I know you don't like it here. I know you're used to taking care of yourself, but this city can be dangerous and I'm one of the few people you can trust.
She sits. John stands near a window on the other side of the room.
Kathleen: Believe me, I understand. I can't make you stay. It's your choice. But I'd really like you to.
He makes eye contact. She sighs, then stands and heads to the door. He pushes the right curtain aside. She turns around.
Kathleen: Oh, and do me a favor. If you want to leave, just open the window.
He watches her leave.
Next day. View of city traffic. Jane at desk looking at paperwork. She reads to herself, her lips moving slightly. Sam standing a couple steps away watching.
Sam: You know you move your lips when you read?
Jane looks to Sam, then puts paper on desk.
Jane: How long you been standing there?
Sam: Any progress?
Jane: I'm looking in the family business. Scrap metal yards. Dad married into it.
Sam: What does it tell you?
Jane: Absolutely nothing.
He steps up and sits in a chair next to her.
Sam: Jane, I would die for you, you know that right? Look, I need you to talk to me, okay?
Jane: Okay.
He puts a file on her desk.
Sam: These are the suspects in Mike's murder. I went over their statements. They all say they got beat down. Beat down by some wild man with long hair and bare feet. He sounds faimiar to you, Jane? Hmm? You know, you never told me how you found the boy's father. I mean, the police half the feds working on this case. But without any back-up, you find Dad. That is amazing. I've only seen this kind of thing happen once before, Jane, someone who could find anyone, anywhere.
Jane looks at Sam.
Sam: But that guy's dead, right?
John jumps on a long pipe, and 'catches boy's scent.' Jane and Sam are standing in a doorway out of other people's earrange.
Jane: Sam, say something, please.
Sam: What do you want me to say? Huh? What do you want me to say? John Clayton is alive and he killed one of my friends and my other friend, probably my best friend, she's protecting him?
Jane: You don't understand.
Sam: You're right. I don't understand. Listen to me, serious as a heart attack, you need to bring him in.
Jane: I can't.
Sam: Why not? If he tried to save Michael's life like you say he did, what's the problem?
Jane: You really think a bunch of cops are gonna care if it was self defense or not?
Sam: What are you gonna do? Let him run around kicking people's ass? He's dangerous.
Jane: I've already told you Sam, I can't do it.
Sam: This is serious.
Jane: I need time.
Sam: For what? What are you going to do?
Jane: I need to figure something out. But while I do, be quiet, please.
Sam: I won't lie for you Jane. I'm sorry. I won't do it.
He walks away leaving Jane standing there. John steps over bridge side onto fence, then lands on ground and passes a car.
Station. Jane at her desk looking at picture of boy on computer. She finds SEK backward on tarp.
Jane: SEK.
Jane puts photos on Sam's desk.
Jane: Look at this. It's a reflection off the tarp. You recognize that logo? It was on the little boy's trruck. SEK scrap metal yards. Sam, it's a family bsuiness. I think that's where they've got Jason.
Sam pulls list of business addresses.
Sam: Which one Jane? I see 2 dozen spread all over.
Jane: This one, here. In Brookland.
Sam: How do you know that?
Jane: I don't know, but it's a hunch. John said they crossed the river.
Sam looks at Jane.
Jane: Sam, later on you can be pissed at me all you want. But right now this is the best we got and I need your help.
Sam and Jane arrive at scrap yard. They get out and see a man looking in a trunk of a red car.
Sam: Hey, what you got in the trunk?
He asks pulling his jacket aside to reveal badge on belt. Man pulls gun and shoots while slamming the trunk and hiding behind car. Sam and Jane take cover and shoot back.
Man: The kid's in the car, so don't shoot.
He shoots, then gets in. He starts the car. Sam and Jane stand up.
Sam: Go, go, go go.
John jumps from one pile of cars on top of red car. He punches through the windshield and pulls man out and throws him on the ground. Man scrambles to get away. John lands on him. Man grabs a crowbar and hits John on side of head. Man gets up and aims gun at John. A shot is heard. The man falls to reveal Jane. Jane puts her gun away, grabs crowbar, and runs back to red car and pops the trunk. Sam stands next to the down suspect. Jane sees the boy isn't there.
Sam: How we doing?
Jane passes Sam, kneels down to the man, grabs his shirt, and pulls him up slightly.
Jane: Is Jason alive? Where is he?
The man smiles at her.
Man: In the trunk.
John is standing with his back to Jane. Jane turns to John.
Jane: John, where is he?
John looks a moment.
Sam: What the hell's going on?
Sam asks looking between Jane and John. Jane gets up and takes a step to John.
Tarzan/John: He is close.
He runs off to a pile of cars. View pulls back to reveal a lot of piled cars. He jumps on some cars, turns and listens. Jane begins opening nearby trunks. One reveals nothing. She goes to the next one. John jumps to second pile, then on top of the next one one car higher. Sam looks in a nearby van. Jane looks to John, then opens another trunk. Empty.
Sam: I'm going to call for back-up.
Jane stops a moment and looks to Sam.
Jane: You make that call, John can't stay.
Sam: Jane, there's too many cars, the kid'll cook to death.
Jane: I don't care how many cops you call, John can work faster.
John leaps off one car, over a pile of cars, and onto another. He jumps to a lower car, then onto a red car by itself on the ground.
Tarzan/John: Jane.
Sam and Jane rush over as John tries to open the trunk with his hands. Jane pops it open with the crowbar and finds the boy inside on his side.
Jane: We got you, we got you, you're okay.
She lifts Jason up and holds him as she sits on the bumper. John sighs happy that the boy is alive and safe.
Sam: (On Phone) I'm goin to need a unit at SEK scrap metal yards. We found the boy. Repeat, we found the boy.
Boy sitting on removed car seats with his teddy bear. John comes up and squats next to him.
Tarzan/John: What is his name?
Pointing at the teddy.
Jason: When he was my Mommy's she called him Leo, but I call him Thomas.
Tarzan/John: He has two names, like me.
Sam and Jane watch. Sirens approach. Sam and Jane turn to look in the direction of the sirens a moment, then Jane looks to John.
Jane: You gotta go.
John looks from Jane back to Jason.
Tarzan/John: Goodbye.
He stands up, takes a step back, turns, and jogs away. Jane sits next to Jason as the sirens and cars pull up behind Sam's car. Mom gets out and runs to Jason.
Mom: Oh Jason.
Jason: Mommy.
Jason gets up and meets his Mom halfway. She scoops him up in a hug. Lieutenant comes up to Sam and Jane.
Lieutenant: Where's the perp?
Sam: Didn't make it in time.
Lieutenant: How did it go down? How did you find the kid?
Sam and Jane look at one another a moment, then Sam looks back at the Lieutenant.
Sam: You know I'm a little offended by that question, Lieutenant. When are you gonna realize I'm just a superstar cop?
Sam and Jane smile at one another, then Sam walks away. Jane walks behind a rubble building half fallen.
Tarzan/John: Jane.
He says from behind a small wall.
Jane: Seems like I'm always finding you in the shadows. You should be in the light, you deserve to be.
He comes over in her direction, then passes her and stands a few steps away. Jane stays where she is..
Tarzan/John: Is the boy with his Mother?
Jane: Thanks to you. I'm glad you were here today, John. I'm sorry too, for everything that I put you through.
She steps closer.
Jane: Look, I was angry at you for Michael's death. I wanted to blame someone, anyone, and...John it's not your fault. It's mine. My weakness and my lies.
Tarzan/John: But I couldn't save him.
Jane puts her hand on his arm.
Jane: I know you tried.
He moves her hand and tries to hold it with both his but she pulls her hand away.
Jane: Please let me take you back to your Aunt's.
He nods once. They walk away.
Night. John in a bedroom. He looks troubled as he stands next to a window looking at the bedroom door. He opens the window, looks back at the door, then climbs out the window and up to roof. He perches on the ledge looking at the lit city below, then turns around and sees a window. He climbs in and finds everything covered in white cloths. He pulls one down to reveal a pillow with a small teddy in a pouch. On the pillow is 'John's Teddy'. He puts it down and removes another cloth revealing pictures on a dresser. He picks one up that has his parents on it and wipes away some dust. His eyes glaze over (remembering?).
Nicki heads to the front door. Jane is there and just closed the front door.
Nicki: Hey, I was just about to leave.
Jane walks past her and stands nearby.
Nicki: Are you okay?
Jane stays quiet a moment.
Nicki: You need some time alone. I understand.
Nicki turns away.
Jane: I've been lying to everyone I love. Michael's dead. And I have all these feelings I've never had before. I pray that they stop, and then I'm glad when they don't. I feel like I used to have everything figured out. Work, love. I had all the answers. So what's happening to me, Nicki?
Nicki comes and hugs Jane. Jane begins to cry. John is walking down a hall. He notices a slightly open door. He opens it, then sees two glass doors with a room of overgrown plants inside. With some effort, he opens them and walks inside. He sees it is like his jungle home.
Kathleen: I closed this place up so I could forget it was here.
John quickly turns to see her there. He comes closer to her.
Kathleen: You used to live here. In this wing of the house. You, your Mother and Father.
She looks around amazed.
Kathleen: After the disappearance, I couldn't bring myself to change it. I couldn't bring myself here at all.
John looks at her while she looks around.
Kathleen: It has your spirit.
He looks around.
Kathleen: Your Father's spitit.
She notices he has left. She follows him out two glass doors out on a balcony. He gets up on the edge and looks at the city. She comes to stand next to him seeing who he was become.
Kathleen: So will you stay?
He looks to her, then back out at the city.
