Morning sunrise. Jane is sitting at an open window. Michael comes up.
Michael: Hey. How come you're not asleep yet?
Jane: I just couldn't sleep.
Michael: I can't say I blame you. Not after what you went through the other night. Whoo, it's freezing in here.
He reaches over and closes window.
Michael: Hey, let's get you to bed.
Walks Jane to bed. She lays down.
Michael: Can I get you anything? Water? Advil? Tequilla?
Jane smiles.
Jane: Yeah, maybe all of the above.
Michael: You did real good last night. Stopped a really bad man.
Jane: I don't feel good.
Michael: I know how your brain works. You can't beat yourself up about it.
Jane: What?
Michael: John Clayton. You know, his death. There's nothing you could have done. He brought you back to me.
He kisses her on the cheek.
Michael: Get some sleep.
He leaves closing the door. John watches the window from a nearby rooftop across the street. He then hears a woman screaming.
Woman: Help me! No! No!
He runs and jumps down to wooded park. A woman is running. Four men chase her. She trips, they catch up. One knocks her down. One pulls a knife while two others grab her arms.
Woman: Please-
John lands in a tree. The men and woman look to him. John jumps down and fights the men. The men take off. He goes up to the woman on the ground.
Woman: Please don't hurt me.
He looks to her confused.
Tarzan/John: Hurt you?
Police come and he disappears. She watches him climb up a tree and go out of sight.
Jane is buttoning her shirt. Michael is at the doorway.
Michael: Hey.
Jane: Hey.
Michael: You sure about coming in today?
Jane: Yeah. I could use a little normallcy. I could use a cup of coffee actually.
Michael: Well, I can help you with the coffee part.
Jane: Thanks.
She gets her phone, badge, and gun. She looks in the mirror and see John outside the window. She goes to the window.
Jane: You gotta get out of here.
Tarzan/John: Why?
Jane: You can't be here, it's dangerous.
Michael: Hey Jane, coffee black right?
Jane: Yes, please.
Tarzan/John: What is he doing here?
He says jumping inside.
Jane: Shh. John, you have to leave now.
Nicki enters the kitchen.
Michael: What are you doing up so early?
Nicki: My a.m. classes.
Michael: First rule of college, Nicki, no classes before noon.
Nicki: Yeah, I figured that out.
Michael: You telling me your sister
warned you about that?
Nicki: You kidding? I thought Jane loved morning classes.
Jane: I need you to listen to me.
She is pulling clothes from a nearby dresser.
Jane: Everyone thinks you're dead and we need to keep it that way. At least until I can find you someplace to go.
Tarzan/John: What kind of place?
She stands up and hands him some clothes.
Jane: Safe from your Uncle. Listen, put this on. You can't run around New York looking like that.
Tarzan/John: These are his.
He tries to hand them back.
Jane: That's alright.
She puts them against his chest, then goes to window and opens it.
Jane: I need you to leave. Now. Please.
She guides him to the window. He gets on the ledge. They make eye contact a moment. She turns away a moment, when she turns back, John is gone. She reaches over and closes the window as Michael opens the door.
Michael: Hey.
On street. Michael and Jane are walking down sidewalk side by side.
Michael: So, I -uh. You know what? Forget it.
Jane: What?
Michael: I promised I wasn't going to say anything.
Jane: Well you have to now. So, what's up?
Jane stops and faces Michael.
Michael: Last night I kinda asked you this big question.
Jane: I know. Michael, I'm so sorry I haven't given you an answer yet. You deserve better than that and I just-
Michael: I just wanna say, no pressure. You went through so much last night I don't wanna pile it up on more stress.
Jane: Okay.
Michael: Take a week, a month, a year. Whenever.
She nods.
Michael: Well, maybe not a year.
Michael and Jane smile at one another. John watches from above as Michael puts his arm around Jane's shoulders and they cross the street.
Precinct.
Jane is at her computer watching a clip about Richard and Kathleen Clayton.
Female Reporter: Family feuds are bigger than the ongoing rivalry between Greystoke CEO Richard Clayton and his sister publishing matene' Kathleen Clayton. Greystoke was divided equally between three siblings until 1983. When John, his wife, and John, Jr. died in a plane crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo. John leaves behind a trust, a massive 1/3 of company stock valued just under 6 billion dollars. This estate which is at the heart of court battle between Richard and Kathleen. Whichever sibling controls the estate secured a controlled interest on Greystoke.
Jane smiles. Michael walks up, Jane turns screen off.
Michael: Hey. You busy? I could use some help.
Jane: Sure. What's up?
Michael: Assault. Ginger Park. I got Sam digging around. Want to go talk to the vic?
Jane: Yeah, sure.
Michael: Alright.
She leaves. He looks at her blank screen a moment, then follows her.
Talking with victim.
Michael: Have you seen this knife before?
Woman jogger: It was right in front of my eyes. I'll never forget it.
Michael slides bagged knife to Jane. Jane looks it up in knife book.
Michael: Do you think it's possible you could describe the men that attacked you?
Woman jogger: They wore ski masks.
Michael: How about their height, their build?
Woman jogger: I don't know, I'm sorry. They pinned me down. They pinned me down an they were laughing like it was some kind of a game.
Jane: Rachel, think for me, is there anything else you remember?
Rachel: Remember...the guy who chased them away.
Jane: That's good, that's great. What did he look like?
Rachel: Long hair and a torn shirt.
Jane: Did you see his face?
Rachel: Not really, but he wasn't wearing any shoes.
Jane: Uh, he was barefoot?
Michael looks at Jane a moment as she takes notes.
Rachel: Mostly, yeah. He was brutal. He was out of control. Wild. And he was going to slaughter those guys. I'm thankful, but to tell you the truth, he scared me.
Sam opens door.
Sam: Hey, we got something.
Sam leads Jane and Michael to a man sitting down.
Sam: Mr. Koalski works for park services. He was working a double shift around the same time and the same place as the victim. Mr. Koalski, why don't you tell these fine officers what you saw?
Mr. Koalski: Two kids, wasted, smashing windows, laughing. I went after them, but they took off.
Sam: And guess what? Mr. Koalski just i.d.'d one of them from one of the books. Turns out he's got a rap sheet.
Hands file to Michael.
Sam: Matt Keaton. Some of his greatest hits include:
-petty larsony
-and car theft
Michael: Last known address?
Sam holds up a piece of paper.
Sam: How good am I?
Michael: Yeah. Mr. Koalski, you're 100% positive about this?
Mr. Koalski: I never forget faces.
Michael: Okay.
Jane: Guys, come here.
They all take a few steps away and talk.
Sam: Hey, Barney. Take care of Mr. Koalski for me, thanks.
Jane: I don't know. I think we should keep looking.
Michael: Why? We have positive i.d.
Sam: Can't get better than positive.
Jane: Maybe this kid was getting roudy in a park but that doesn't mean he did it.
Michael and Sam look at one another, then back at Jane.
Sam: What makes you say that?
Jane: Victim reported four suspects, not two. That knife, I looked it up in the catalog, it's a thousand bucks. Way out of this kid's price range.
Michael: Maybe he stole it.
Jane: Maybe. I don't know, but I got a gut on this.
Michael looks to Sam.
Michael: Did she just say 'gut'?
Sam: Mm-hmm.
Michael: Since when do you start going on your gut? Sounds like Sam.
Sam: Hey, she learned from the best.
Michael: We got a solid lead. I'm gonna follow it.
Michael walks off. Sam follows. Jane stands there a moment. Jane at Kathleen Clayton's.
Kathleen: Sorry about the wait, Detective.
Jane: Stars pretty brutal when it comes to Greystoke.
Kathleen: It better be, I'm the publisher. Look, my schedule's a little crazy today so you mind we cut to the chase?
Jane: I'm investigating your brother, Richard.
Kathleen and Jane make eye contact.
Kathleen: Shut the door (to asssitant).
Jane: When was the last time you saw him?
Kathleen: Board meeting, six months ago. Turned into quite the screaming match. Then again, they always do.
Jane: Would you mind telling me about this trust? Your brother John's estate?
Kathleen: Why?
Jane: You've been fighting Richard pretty tooth and nail for it. I mean, I don't blame you. Six bil. is an awful lot of money, but...
Kathleen: I don't know what you're driving at, but we're finished here.
Jane: I think Richard has found a way to control the trust. I want to stop him. I want to help you stop him, but first I need to know where you stand.
Kathleen: I want to give it away.
Jane: Excuse me?
Kathleen: To charity. It's how I want the trust spent. My brother and my father cared about a lot more than profit. Greystoke invests in people and ideas. Then Richard took over and he changed all that. So I'm fighting for this trust for my brother's memory. It's what he would have wanted. Now, do you mind telling me what this is about?
Jane: Um, Ms. Clayton, there's no real way of saying this besides just saying it. Your nephew, he's alive.
Kathleen: What?
Jane: He survived the plane crash. Richard found him and brought him here to New York and now he's escaped-
Kathleen: Stop. The idea that John could survive 20 years in the jungle. Maybe Richard lied to you. Maybe Richard put you up to this for some sick reason. You wouldn't be the first cop on his payroll. Now get out of my house.
She turns to walk to her desk.
Jane: Ms. Clayton I'm telling you the truth. John's alive and he needs protection.
Kathleen: Get out of my house.
Jane nods and walks out.
Night.
Nash on phone in limo.
Nash: Really.
Man on phone: Got the call myself, Mr. Nash.
Nash: Alright. Thanks.
Hangs up.
Nash: That was an old friend of mine, a desk seargent, very reliable. Says he got a report of a wild man.
Richard listens.
Nash: Pawed off four men with his bare hands.
Richard: He's alive, then. Thank God. Everything depends on him. Everything.
Jane at desk at station putting files on desk. Michael comes up and knocks.
Michael: Hola.
Jane: Hey.
Michael: So, I was thinking, why not blow off my paperwork and come do a Jane Porter special. Peperoni, no mushrooms. Bottle red and Steve McQueen flick.
Jane: Thanks, but, uh, I can barely keep my eyes open. I was just going to head home and go to sleep.
Michael: Really?
Jane sighs.
Jane: Sure you don't mind?
Michael: Yeah, I'm sure.
Michael leans in for a kiss, Jane moves past him.
Jane: Night.
He watches her put her coat on as she leaves. Jane walks across the street. John drops behind her from contstruction pipe and taps on shoulder while hanging from bar. Jane whirls around.
Jane: You really can't jump out at me like that.
Tarzan/John: Come with me.
Jane: No.
John gets off pole and steps up to her with a smile.
Tarzan/John: Please.
Jane smiles.
Jane: Alright.
They walk around a corner. Michael sees them and follows only to see they're gone. Jane runs down alley and stops unable to see John.
Tarzan/John: Hey.
He is above her braced between fire escape railing and a brick wall. Jane sees he is there. She reaches the top of the stairs to the roof and steps out the door.
Jane: John.
She finds him perched on edge of roof overlooking city. She walks up and stands next to him.
Tarzan/John: It's beautiful.
Jane: I met with your Aunt today.
John turns to her.
Jane: Uh, your father's sister.
He steps down and stands in front of her.
Tarzan/John: My Father?
Jane: Yes, and she doesn't like your Uncle very much and I think she might help.
Tarzan/John: Help with what?
Jane: You could stay with her.
Tarzan/John: I want to stay with you.
Jane: That's not possible.
Tarzan/John: Why not?
Jane: Because that's not how it works here.
John brushes past her and perches somewhere else.
Jane: You can't just jump into someone's life and-You were in a fight this morning. With a group of guys in the park. They were attacking a woman.
He nods once.
Tarzan/John: Yes.
Jane: Okay. John, this is what I'm talking about. If someone had seen you-
Tarzan/John: They were hurting her.
He said getting down to stand in front of her.
Jane: I understand that. But it's not that simple.
Tarzan/John: When somene needs help, I help them. Don't you?
Jane: These men, did you happen to see any of their skin? Was it black?
Tarzan/John: No. It was like yours.
He reaches out and puts his palm on her cheek.
Jane: John, I'm trying to figure this out and I'm trying to help you. I can't do this. I have to go.
Jane brushes past him. He turns and watches her go. Jane opens apartment door and steps in. She closes the door and walks in to see Michael sitting on arm of chair.
Jane: Hey. What are you doing here?
Michael: Where you been? I left right after you.
Jane crosses the room to a table.
Jane: I stopped, I was hungry.
She takes her jacket off and tosses it on a chair.
Michael: Oh. Good.
Jane: Is there something wrong?
As she removes the clip from her gun.
Michael: Yeah, there is. There's something you need to tell me Jane. I've been thinking about it, right. Why should we wait to get married? Huh? For what? Let's get married now.
Jane: Michael, I thought you were okay with this but I need some time.
Michael: Why?
Jane: Just to think everything through.
Michael: But why?
Jane walks up and sits in a chair.
Jane: Michael, I'm not saying 'no'. Okay?
Michael: So what's changed?
Jane: Nothing's changed.
Michael: Look, I know something's going on. Alright? I need you to trust me.
Jane: Michael, I do trust you. Alright? Everthing's going to be okay. I promise.
Michael: I tell you what, Jane. Forget I even asked you to marry me.
He stands and walks out front door.
Jane: Michael.
She stands and turns around to see door close.
Nicki: Jane, what's going on?
Jane sits down.
Nicki: Jane, what happened?
Nicki sitting in chair. Jane sitting on couch.
Nicki: You haven't told Michael about John? About any of this?
Jane: No. I mean, he knows something's up. I love Michael, I can't be doing this to him. For what? For John? I mean, he can barely speak, he doesn't wear shoes, he's completely uncontrollable. It's like he's from a different planet. (Scoffs) and, my God, talk about a traumatic background. What am I thinking? I'm not thinking, that's the problem.
Nicki: Um, am I allowed to speak now?
Jane: Yeah, I'm sorry.
Nicki moves to sit next to Jane.
Nicki: Look, maybe not thinking is a good thing.
Jane: What do you mean?
Nicki: Mom always said you think too much. Maybe you should just listen to how you feel.
Jane: No, forget it. I gotta get John somewhere safe, but after that, I'm not gonna see him...ever again.
City buildings, night. Michael in large office talking to someone.
Michael: I can pull a confession out of anybody. It's sort of my specialty. But with Jane, I didn't. I hold back. Because sometimes a lie tells more than the truth.
Angle pans around to Michael's side, then behind him to reveal Richard.
Michael: John Clayton. He's dangerous to himself, to others, especially to Jane. I can see it even if she can't. So that's why I'm here.
Michael: I can find your nephew and I can deliver him.
Precinct. Next day. Sam in viewing room looking at interrogation. Jane steps in.
Jane: What's going on?
Sam: We picked up the two suspects at the park. One's in the tank. One's (points in room) in there.
Michael standing ant leaning on table with hands. Suspect in chair across from him.
Sus. #1: Please man, I told you. We didn't hurt anybody. We got drunk, we broke some windows, and that was it. I swear.
Michael holds up bagged MP3 player.
Michael: Explain this, Matt.
Puts it in front of him on the table.
Matt: We found it in the mud. We figured some fool lost it, that's it.
Michael: That's no good Matt. It belonged to the victim. I know you were there and I know you hurt that girl. Your hair samples, your prints, all over the girls clothes.
Jane shakes her head.
Jane: Michael, don't do this.
Michael: Your buddy Doug, he says it was all your idea. Me, I think it was his. (something).
Michael claps.
Michael: Focus man, focus. You know what happens if you don't talk to us right now? You're getting 20 years in prison.
Jane walks out.
Michael: But you come clean. Hey. I'll talk to the D.A., see what I can do.
Jane opens door.
Jane: I need to talk to you. Now.
Michael comes out and closes door.
Michael: What do you think you're doing? I had him.
Jane: He didn't do it.
Michael: Oh, come on. You're joking.
Jane: I'm absolutely serious. When I find the two that did this, you're going to have to send these two home.
Michael: Jane, they were at the scene of the crime, they stole from the victim. What else do you need?
Jane: Michael, however you feel about me, don't take it out on these kids.
Michael: I wouldn't do that. Jane, I want to apologize for last night. I completely lost my head. I'm sorry.
Jane: It's alright.
Michael: No it isn't. I'll make it up to you. Everything's going to be okay, I promise.
Jane: Yeah.
Michael goes back in interrogetion room. Jane remains there.
Ground view looking up at Greystoke building. Kathleen in office. Picks up picture and smiles. Clock chimes. Richard enters. Kathleen puts picture down and turns to him. He closes the door.
Richard: Kate. I'm suprised you're even coming. It's like pulling teeth just to get you here.
Kathleen: I wanted to talk to you.
Richard: I'm listening.
He sits in nearby chair. She comes and sits across from him.
Kathleen: Richard, there shouldn't be this anger between us. This bitterness, I'm tired of it.
Richard: What do you want, Kate?
Kathleen: I want to stop fighting over our brother's trust.
Sits in chair.
Kathleen: How much time and money have we wasted. Let's settle this out of court. We split John's estate 50/50.
Richard: Why the change of heart?
Kathleen: I stopped by the cemetary today. I realized I never thanked you.
Richard: For what?
Kathleen: You kept going back to the jungle. You kept trying to find their bodies. I thought you were crazy, but you never gave up. And now that you've found their remains, now that the've had a proper burial, John, Alice, John Jr.
Richard: No. I need that trust. To keep Greystokes going. To keep this company running the way it should run. That's what's best Kate, But I appreciate you coming.
She stands, then leaves.
Night in city over buildings.
Jane and Sam talking with man.
Jane: Group of four or five guys. Happened early yesterday morning. Caucaisian.
Man: Didn't see anybody.
Jane: If you remember anything, give me a call.
Hands card. Sam and Jane walk off.
Sam: What are we doing here Jane? I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm a big old fan of the white boy theory. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to bust a bunch of snippy white ass boys. But you got nothing to back this up. I mean this is out of here, even for me.
Jane: Sam, how many times have you told me 'I just got a feeling and I just can't explain it'?
Sam: What's up with you lately?
Jane: What do you mean?
Jane faces Sam.
Sam: I mean you used to be this cool, collective, by the book machine. Now, you're chasing hunches, making rash decisions. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like it, it's not bad, it's just, it's just not you, Jane. Now look, I'm your partner and I'm your friend, and if there's something going on, I want to know.
Jane: I appreciate that, but you got nothing to worry about.
Sam: Okay. I need you sharp. You got one of the most important jobs in the city.
Jane: Yeah? What's that?
Sam: Keeping my ass in line.
He walks past her to car. Jane notices tree branches shake slightly.
Jane: You know what? Um, you go ahead. I'm gonna walk.
Sam: It's twelve blocks.
Jane: Will you get off my case? I want some fresh air.
Sam: Ooh, that's what I'm talking about right there. You're getting freakier and freakier.
Gets in car.
Sam: Fresh air.
Pulls away. Jane waits for Sam to be out of view, then walks to tree. John jumps down behind her. She whirls around.
Jane: John. What if someone saw you?
He looks a moment.
Jane: I'm trying ot protect you. You're not making it any easier.
Tarzan/John: You're looking for the men I fought.
Jane: Yeah, I am.
Tarzan/John: I followed them.
Jane: You followed them? How?
Tarzan/John: Their scent.
Jane: Their scent?
He nods once.
Jane: Alright. Take me.
He puts hand on her left shoulder and turns her around.
Tarzan/John: This way.
They walk through some thin trees.
Tarzan/John: These men, they fight for food?
Jane: No.
Tarzan/John: Then for their home/hunt?
Jane: There's no reason. They just do it for fun.
Tarzan/John: Fun?
Jane: You know, for the thrill of hurting people like us for the rush.
Tarzan/John: Why would they do that?
He stops hearing something.
Jane: What is it?
Tarzan/John: Something's wrong.
He turns and they see Michael walk up.
Jane: Michael.
She puts a hand on John's shoulder stopping him, then steps in front.
Jane: You followed me?
Michael: That's all you have to say to
me right now, Jane?
John moves to Jane's left.
Jane: I'm sorry.
Michael: Me too.
Jane turns and looks passed John, then back at Michael.
Jane: What did you do?
Michael: I did what I had to do.
Jane: You called Clayton?
Michael: How many times you lie to me, huh?
John moves behind Jane. Jane turns and they make eye contact a moment. John looks to Michahel. John dashed off. Jane goes to follow. Michael grabs her arm stopping her.
Jane: John.
He climbs up tree. Men shoot up in tree with tasers.
Jane: Don't! Don't you hurt him! Stop!
John hangs by one hand, then falls to ground still being tasered. Jane comes up and is blocked by one man.
Jane: John. Let me go.
Men pick weak John up and put him in van. Michael leads Jane away to his car. Jane pulls arm away from Michael as they come to his car.
Jane: Michael, I can't do this.
Michael: 'I can't do this'? Do you hear yourself right now? You're not thinking straight.
He opens passenger door. Jane remains standing.
Michael: You going to throw your life away? All your plans? All our plans? For what? For him?
Jane: No, Michael, no.
Steps close to door and takes his hand.
Jane: This is not about us. Alright?
She slaps cuff on his wrist and cuffs the other to the window frame.
Michael: Jane.
Jane: I have to help him.
She takes off.
Michael: No, Jane. No!
He pulls a set of keys from his pocket. Just as the men push John's feet in, he wakes up. He kicks them abck and jumps out. He jumps on one man's back. Another man approaches. He jumps on second man knocking him to the ground. The man's taser gun slides away. Nash aims taser at John. John stops while looking at Nash. Nash get stasered and falls to ground revealing Jane behind him. She drops the taser. John and Jane com eup to one another. He takes her face in his hands. He turns hearing a woman screaming.
Jane: What is it?
Tarzan/John: She's screaming.
He takes off. She follows. They find a woman bloody.
Jane: It's alright. We're here to help you.
Jane kneels putting hand on woman's shoulder. John squats to Jane's right. Jane pulls out her cell and talks on walkie.
Jane: This is Detective Porter. I have a woman down. She's past 10-24. I need an immediate ambulance at the Grand Army Plaza.
Jane takes her jacket off and covers the woman.
Jane: I need you to tell me who did this to you.
Woman mumbles.
Jane: What?
Woman nods as she points across the street.
Jane: Multiple suspects heading East on 8th street. Requesting back up. You're going to be okay.
John stands up and puts back to them. Jane grabs hand.
Jane: John, where are you going?
Tarzan/John: To stop them.
Jane: John, when I made that call, every cop in my precinct is going to hear that. Michael is going to hear it. You gotta get out of here. John. Let the cops handle this. You don't need to.
He pulls his hand away.
Tarzan/John: Yes I do.
He takes off. He jumps over a cab and rolls off the hood, then dashes between cars. Jane watches him go.
Dispatch: All units be advised. 10-24 Central Park. Multiple subjects heading East on 68th. Any available units respond.
He pulls out cell walkie.
Michael: Dispatch. Who called that in?
Dispatch: Detective. Porter.
Michael pockets the phone while heading to car. He removes jacket and quickly gets in and takes off. John runs down an alley. He jumps on a delivery truck, then heads up a fire escape ladder to the roof. He runs across the roof and jumps up and rolls onto upper ledge of a room. Four men talking enter parking lot.
-Dude, next time we have to bring a camera.
They stop hearing a loud thump.
-What was that?
-We should bail.
Two go to one car, two go to another car. One goes to open car door. John jumps on them and throws them down. The other two notice. John slides over the top of the car and kicks the other man in face. The third man pulls a bat out of the second car and heads for John. John meets him halfway. The man swings, John ducks. John climbs on mans back, then tumble rolls them to the ground. Fourth man takes out a bat and heads over. John gets up in a crouch position and swings arm in man's face causing him to roll back. He leaps over man on all fours, then stands upright. He ducks man's swing. He puts back against mans' stomach on his back and picks him up. He turns and tosses him on a car. The third man gets off the ground and swings bat hitting John in back of the right knee. John lets his right knee fall to the ground, then turns picking the man up with his shoulder. He turns around and throws him on another car. Car alarm goes off. Micahel enters with gun drawn.
Michael: Not that hard to find.
John half smiles 'oh great' look.
Michael: Make so much damn noise. Dispatch, I have four suspects detained. Requesting back up and an ambulance at Grand Access Parking lot at 69th and second.
Third man stirs.
Michael: Take it easy. I'm going to bring you back to your Uncle's. You'll be safe there.
Man rolls off car and hits ground. Michael turns around. John dashes off. Michael fires hitting some pipes. He then chases John. Michael exits door and sees John climbing up side of escape ladders. He fires hitting him in the right bicep. Police cars enter parking lot. Jane watches, then hears shots.
Jane: Oh no.
Then takes off. John grunts from being shot looking down at Michael, then continues to climb. Michael scrambles up steps. Michael gets to roof and doesn't see John. John jumps down and knocks gun from Michael's hands. He takes Michael's hand and flips him slamming his back on the roof. John holds Michael's hand down that has gun while his other hand is on Michael's throat. John takes the gun and throws it aside. Michael grabs John's g.s.w. arm and squeezes. John grunts. Michael throws him aside. They both stand and face each other. Michael moves towards John and shoves him back. John trips over metal box, but quickly stands. John leaps up and hits Michael in chest with both feet sending them both to the ground. Michael rolls away. John stands. Jane steps off ladder on roof. She goes to John and shoves him back.
Jane: Stop it.
She turns to Michael and goes to him.
Jane: Michael if you want to hit someone, hit me. I'm the one that lied.
Michael backs up.
Jane: It's not his fault, it's mine.
She goes back to John and sees his arm.
Jane: You shot him? He was unarmed.
She looks to John.
Jane: You alright?
John puts his right hand on Jane's face. Michael glares, then charges John. They roll over the edge.
Jane: No!
John is holding onto Michaels' hand with right shot arm. His sleeve is covered with blood. Michael's grip slips.
Jane: Michael.
Michael looks down.
Michael: Oh my God.
Jane: Michael!
Michael's grip slips.
Tarzan/John: Hold on.
He looses his grip and falls.
Jane: Michael!
Jane and John watch helpless as Michael lands on the ground. Jane then puts her back against the edge. John climbs up and holds hurt arm.
Jane: What were you doing up here? Why did you even fight him?
They look over the edge and see a cop car stop next to Micahel's body. Jane and John turn away. Jane looks down at the roof, John looks at Jane.
Jane: Listen to me. Michael was a cop. The police won't care what happened. They'll kill you for this. We have to go. Now.
She walks away. He follows. As they walk away, someone watches from a nearby window. Kathleen Clayton hears knock at door.
Mary: I told them to go away. That I was going to call the police.
Kathleen: No, (looking at door) I think they're already here.
Opens door. John and Jane step in.
Jane: This is your nephew. Something terrible has happened and he needs your help.
Kathleen and John make eye contact.
Jane: You have to help him, please.
Kathleen: John?
She sees his hurt arm.
Kathleen: Mary, get Dr. Jackie now.
Jane takes John's arm off her shoulder. She turns to walk away. John takes her hand. She stops but doesn't turn around.
Tarzan/John: I'm sorry.
Jane leaves. Night view of city. Precinct. Four boys from parking lot being brought in. Sam and Jane at Sam's desk.
Sam: Why don't we just do this tomorrow?
Jane: I want to get this over with.
Sam: Okay. So you called in the assault, ambulance arrived. You leave the victim. Where did you go?
Jane: Went after a suspect.
Sam: Did you find him?
Jane: No.
Sam: 15 minutes later, Mike calls. He's got the assault suspects detained. That's the last anyone hears from him. Did you see Mike at any point today?
Jane slowly shakes head.
Sam: Do you know anyone who could have done this to him?
Jane takes a moment.
Jane: No.
Sam: You listen to me. Mike was my friend and I loved him too. I swear to you I'm gonna find out who did this. I don't care what rules or regulations I have to break to do it. And when I do find them, (scoffs and stands up) I promise.
Sam walks away. Jane sits there a moment. She gets up and heads to a window and looks out at the rain. John steps up to a window and sees the rain. He turns to the right a moment. Jane closes her eyes, then looks out. John backs up from the window and sits down putting his back against the side of the bed.
