Mitchell opens his eyes
FLASH
Reya screaming, holds up her hands as a figure, beats her.
FLASH
Mitchell slowly come to, bringing his hands up to rub his face stops short
as he spots trails of blood on his hands.
FLASH
Mitchell hits Reya repeatedly, as she screams. He drops the statue, staring
at his hands
FLASH
Mitchell sits up, unsure…There’s a knock at the door.
MAN: Open up this door! *sound of door being forced open, as several men
enter, pushing Mitchell down on the ground* I got him…
MITCHELL: What the hell is going on?
OFFICER: Colonel Mitchell.
MITCHELL: *they bind his hands* yeah…what happened? *pull him to his feet*
OFFICER: Bring him
The men pick him up and follow officer into the other room; Mitchell stares
down at the lifeless body of Reya Varrick.
MITCHELL: Oh my gawd…
OFFICER: Colonel Mitchell…I’m placing you under arrest for the Murder of Dr
Reya Varrick.
CREDITS
24 HOURS EARLIER…
SCENE: Mitchell lies in an Alien chair with various wires attached to his
head, flashing to Dr Reya Varrick’s Apartment, she walks out of her room,
doing up her Robe.
REYA: Sorry to keep you Emissary…I wasn’t expecting anyone.
EMISSARY/MITCHELL: *staring out window* well…I apologize for coming so
late…but the committee just completed its deliberations. *turns walking over
to her*
REYA: you’ve chosen a new leader for the project.
MITCHELL: yes we have *puts down his glass* Congratulations
REYA: I’m honored.
MITCHELL: We expect …great things *brushes his hand on her arm, as she
shifts away* from you doctor. Along with your new…responsibilities…you will
have a higher security clearance. You already know about the ring…of course.
REYA: Yes sir.
MITCHELL: what you don’t know…is that we’ve used it to visit over a dozen
inhabited worlds…and there may be thousands more out there…
REYA: my God
MITCHELL: as ambassador to those worlds I’ve seen first hand the kinds of
technologies that exist in the galaxy…Giant ships capable of traveling
between the stars…weapons of immeasurable power…Gelar is vulnerable doctor
the project may be our only hope for survival
REYA: We’ll do our best sir…
Flashing as Mitchell comes to jumping up in his seat, Reya standing by his
side, Sg-1 and the Emissary watching.
MITCHELL: wow…
REYA: Colonel? How do you feel?
MITCHELL: *he turns to her, stuck for words*….that’s…just weird…*she smiles*
I was having a conversation with you…it was about a year ago…but we just met
yesterday.
EMISSARY: I was the one, who had a conversation with Dr Varrick, *walks
forward* what you experienced was my memory.
JACKSON: That’s amazing.
EMISSARY: *Grins* oh believe me Dr Jackson…this is just the beginning.
REYA: The memory…*helps remove the various wires* was copied for the
emissary’s mind…and spliced into yours. Once there…it was incorporated into
your conscious… like a transplant organ becoming part of a new body.
MITCHELL: I could swear I was there. *small grin, gets up walking over to
SG-1* I don’t really know…what we were talking about…*points* but we were
talking.
REYA: of course this is just a small demonstration…we’re still perfecting
the process but we believe eventually the device will become an invaluable
educational tool.
EMISSARY: Imagine…your most brilliant surgeons or engineers instantaneously
transferring the full memory of their education and experience to young
students… you could conceivably cut their training time from years to mere
weeks…
CARTER: And you say you adapted this technology from a Goa’uld memory
device…
REYA: That’s correct.
JACKSON: uhh…If you don’t mind our asking… where did you get your hands on
one?
EMISSARY: *This* planet has been under the protection of the Asguard for
many generations…but it was originally occupied by the Goa’uld. That device
was discovered by archeologists over 100 years ago…but it wasn’t til our
understanding of the technology advanced to the point where we could create
the memory transfer…it was Dr Varrick…who made the final breakthrough.
REYA: The Emissary is exaggerating…I was just the last in a long line of
Scientists working on the project…
MITCHELL: The last is the one who gets it right. *she grins, Carter and
Jackson look at Mitchell with a raised eyebrow* what?
SCENE: Cheyenne Mountain, Briefing room
CARTER: The Gelaran’s haven’t perfected the memory implant technology to the
point where it would have widespread applications but from Colonel
Mitchell’s experience it sounds like they’re well on their way…
JACKSON: If they succeed it could artificially accelerate their
technological advancement.
MITCHELL: I think that’s the point.
JACKSON: I’m saying it could be dangerous.
LANDRY: We’re hardly in a position to judge Dr Jackson… for the past nine
years SG-1 has been routinely employing technologies that are well beyond
our level of advancement.
CARTER: The Asguard are busy rebuilding which means they haven’t been around
to do much protecting. The Gelaran’s feel like they need to play catch up.
TEAL’C: In all likelihood that is the reason they are seeking a relationship
with the Tau’ri. They are undoubtedly aware of our success against the
Goa’uld.
LANDRY: So what exactly do they want...I mean aside from our goodwill and
fellowship…?
CARTER: Well right now they have no interstellar capability except for the
gate itself. They’ve been working on hyper drive capability but without much
success…
LANDRY: And they want to offer this memory device in exchange for our help?
JACKSON: Well the emissary was reluctant to get into specifics… I think he
wanted to wet our appetite for the technology before we started bargaining…
LANDRY: Well it worked the joint chiefs are already salivating over the idea
of training jet pilots in a manner of days…we need to set up another
meeting.
CARTER: No need sir. We’ve already been invited back in honor of the
scientists who developed the technology.
MITCHELL: I’m hoping there will be dancing… *at Landry’s look* sir.
SCENE: At the party, Mitchell and Reya walk along together.
MITCHELL: Check that out…even on an Alien world…*points* A wall flower.
REYA: Dr Amuro…He’s worked on the project for many years.
MTICHELL: well it doesn’t look like he’s enjoying the party.
REYA: you know how it is with scientists we spend so much time in the lab…I
think that’s where we feel most comfortable…
MTICHELL: in your case I find that hard to believe.
REYA: are you suggesting I don’t work as hard as my colleagues? *stops*
MTICHELL: no…no…no…god no…uh…that’s suppose to be a compliment…
REYA: guess I’ll have to take your word for it.
SCENE: Jackson, Teal’c and Carter and speaking about the technology with the
Emissary.
JACKSON: No…its not that I don’t appreciate the potential of the technology
but…its…its just that we’re talking about your memory here…its fundamental
to your identity…if you can’t trust it your lost…
EMISSARY: Your memory is already less objected than you think it is Dr
Jackson…
CARTER: Well he’s got a point…I mean…just ask any Cop whose had to take
eyewitness testimony…
JACKSON: Yes…but there’s a difference between getting a license plate number
wrong and not knowing if the four years you spent in college actually ever
happened…
EMISSARY: Yes…but that would never be the case…because everyone receiving
the treatment would be aware of what they were getting…
TEAL’C: So long as the technology is not abused…
EMISSARY: Well that’s a risk with all new technologies…
TEAL’C: Easy said by one who has not been the victim of such abuse.
EMISSARY: *nods, smiles* Excuse me…*leaves*
SCENE: Marell walks over to Mitchell and Reya.
MARRELL: Reya…
REYA: *hesitates*…Dr Marell… this is…Ltd Colonel Mitchell.
MARRELL: We have to talk…
REYA: *to Mitchell* Excuse me…
Carter, Jackson, walk over to Mitchell. Teal’c following a little later.
CARTER: How's it going?
MTICHELL: I don’t really think diplomacy is my thing…
JACKSON: <Favorite line here!!> OOhh…That’s…what…*Carter grins*
you’re…doing…*Gives Carter a look*
MITCHELL: What?
JACKSON: Nothing…nothing *drinks*
SCENE: Marrell passes Reya a sheet of paper, which she reads, looking around
angrily, she marches over to the Emissary once she spots him.
MARRELL: Reya wait…
REYA: Why wasn’t I informed of this?
EMISSARY: Excuse me…*moves away from those he was speaking with* what?
REYA: You moved up the test schedule… and you selected a group of
volunteers… when did this happen? *Amuro walks over listening*
EMISSARY: We’ve been very impressed with your progress…we thought it was
time to take your research to it’s next level…you should take this as a
compliment…
REYA: I noticed all the test subjects are military officers!...how should I
take that?
EMISSARY: This is still a classified operation…
REYA: you gave me your personal assurance this project would remain under
civilian control…
EMISSARY: And so it has…the military is simply making their contribution…
REYA: Well I’ve seen what those contributions can lead to… *SG-1 glance
over*
EMISSARY: You’re overreacting and in any case…this is hardly the place to
discuss it.
REYA: This conversation isn’t over *walks out*
MTICHELL: I’ll be back…*follows her…*
SCENE: Reya heads for the exit, slows when she is called.
MTICHELL: Reya…wait up…*she turns back to him, with an angry sigh*
what…was…all that about?
REYA: I should have seen this coming…they’re going to take the project away
from me…
MTICHELL: why would they do that? You’re the one that figured it out…
REYA: which means they no longer need me…huh…I know where this is coming
from…it’s the General staff… they want to control the technology without any
interference from civilian scientists…I swore I wouldn’t let that
happen…*takes a deep breath* why am I telling you this? You’re a military
officer yourself… if you get your hands on the device the same thing will
happen on your planet…*turns to go*
MTICHELL: Hey! *she turns back* I’m not a big fan of misusing technology on
any planet…and I might be able to help you out…
REYA: *walks closer* what do you mean?
MTICHELL: well obviously your government is keen on forming a relationship
with mine…that gives us some leverage…
REYA: you’d use your influence to help me?
MTICHELL: I could try.
REYA: …well…I really don’t want to go back out there…maybe you could do me a
favor and walk me home…its not far…but I don’t like to walk alone at night…
MTICHELL: really? *Emissary walks in, watching them*
REYA: don’t they have crime on your planet…?
MTICHELL: oh yeah… *the two head off together, The Emissary not looking to
happy about it*
SCENE: Mitchell and Reya enter her apartment…she turns on the lights and
walks to the drinks as Mitchell shuts the door.
MITCHELL: Oh wow…*she turns to look at him* Don’t move…*looks round* the
night the emissary …*she grins* told you…that they put you in charge of the
project *walks over to her* he came here…right?
REYA: that’s right…
MTICHELL: this is weird. *smiles at her* I mean I know I’ve never been here
before but…I recognize this place…
REYA: then you know where the drinks are…make yourself at home…*heads to her
room* and pour me one too…
Mitchell pours the drinks and brings them to her, in the living room.
MTICHELL: it’s impressive… do all government scientists live like this…?
REYA: the success of the project has brought me a few privileges… sometimes
I feel a little guilty, most of my colleagues from my days at the academy
don’t live nearly as well…
MTICHELL: well I’m sure you deserve it *raises glass to her, they drink, who
swallows* wow…*they laugh* that doesn’t pull any punches does it…
REYA: after the day I just had that’s the whole point.
MTICHELL: *walks round her leaning against counter* so…you…live here on your
own?
REYA: why do you ask? *grins*
MTICHELL: ah…it’s a big place…I don’t know…just…just curious I guess…*she
walks in front of him, pulling on his jacket*
REYA: oh…I thought that was your clever way of asking if I was
married…*leans closer…*
MTICHELL: I’m not that clever…
REYA: *laughs* well anyway the answers yes…I live alone…*bumps noses* I…was
married for a while…but the job got in the way…
MTICHELL: *nods* well that much I understand…
REYA: Then we’re not so different after all…*moves arms up round his neck,
kissing him*
MITCHELL: We shouldn’t do this…
REYA: *smiles* you wouldn’t have come here if you didn’t want to…*kisses
him*
MITCHELL: mmm…I didn’t say…I didn’t want to…*kisses her*
SCENE: Emissary’s office, Carter, Teal’c and Jackson are led in.
CARTER: Emissary what’s going on? Where’s Colonel Mitchell
EMISSARY: He’s been taken into custody.
JACKSON: Why?
EMISSARY: He killed Dr Varrick.
CARTER: What?
JACKSON: That’s insane
EMISSARY: When we found him his blood alcohol level was extremely high…I
suspect it was probably some kind of unpremeditated crime of passion…we all
know they left the reception together…
CARTER: That’s hardly evidence.
EMISSARY: We also found her blood on his hands, and his finger prints of the
murder weapon… but most importantly… he confessed.
SG-1 Stare shocked…
SCENE: Mitchell sits in the centre of a cell, staring at the ground, SG-1
stand on the other side of the bars.
CARTER: Cam, what happened?
MITCHELL: I don’t know…I mean…the whole nights just a blur…*closes his eyes*
FLASH
Reya running into the kitchen afraid…she falls crawling from him, screaming,
she raises her hands to protect herself
MITCHELL: (voice over) I just remember feeling this insane anger
Mitchell hits her repeatedly…
FLASH
MITCHELL: *back to the cell* I don’t know why…I picked up the Statue
FLASH
Mitchell picks up the statue…more shots of him hitting her.
FLASH
MITCHELL: and…I hit her with it…*Carter close her eyes…Jackson, shakes his
head* she was lying there…helpless…and I uh…
JACKSON: It wasn’t you… ok? These people can implant memories…
MITCHELL: Yeah I’ve been trying to tell myself the same thing all
morning…but it doesn’t stop me from still seeing her face. What if I told
you everything that happened yesterday was a false memory…how would you know
the difference?
OFFICER: *enters* The Emissary would like to speak with the prisoner…
SCENE: in the Emissary’s office, All of SG-1 stand before the Emissary…
CARTER: We need to talk about this so called evidence you have against
Colonel Mitchell
EMISSARY: That won’t be necessary…Colonel Mitchell is free *stands before
Mitchell* to return to Earth
MITCHELL: I’m what?
EMISSARY: I’m trying to convince the cabinet to maintain your diplomatic
status but I may not succeed… *walks back round desk…*
MITCHELL: Wa-wa—wa wait a minute… if they think I’m guilty why are they
letting me go?
EMISSARY: They believe it is in the best interests of inter planetary
relations to put this business behind us…as quickly and as quietly as
possible…
TEAL’C: Colonel Mitchell has been falsely accused…
JACKSON: Which means there can still be a murderer out there…
EMISSARY: Lets be realistic here… very few people have access to the memory
device…even fewer have the skills to manipulate it in this manner…and none
that I can think of have any motive…Colonel Mitchell should be
grateful…under our rules of evidence he would be convicted of this crime…
MITCHELL: *steps forward, angry* I should be grateful to walk away and have
this memory stuck in my head for the rest of my life?
EMISSARY: Alright then…if you agree to close the matter…we can have the
incident removed from your mind and replace it with a memory of a
pleasant…uneventful evening…
MITCHELL: Just like that… forget it ever happened…
EMISSARY: Precisely…on the other hand…if you insist on a full investigation
I won’t be able to protect you. If the evidence continues to point to your
guilt…you will be subject to the full force of our laws…and the penalty for
murder is death
CARTER: *stands beside Mitchell* Cameron…*quietly*…we need to be really
careful here… we have no idea how their legal system works…we don’t know
what kinds of rights-
MITCHELL: Sam. I need to do this…I want to know what really happened.
SCENE: Earth, Briefing room.
LANDRY: You can tell the Galarens…that until Colonel Mitchell is returned
all trade talks are suspended…
JACKSON: He doesn’t want to come back… he wants to force them to conduct a
full investigation…
LANDRY: I don’t give a damn what he wants…
JACKSON: General…*sighs* its easy for us to sit here and be certain he
didn’t do it… but look at it from his point of view…no matter what we say
he’s still gonna have the memory of murdering that woman with his own hands…
LANDRY: You said the Emissary offered to have the memory removed…
JACKSON: Uh…well he’d still know that she’d been killed…and um… I’m sure he
would be curious why noone was held accountable…for it…
LANDRY: He’s taking an awful chance…
TEAL’C: I believe it highly unlikely that the Galarens would execute Colonel
Mitchell…it would severely hinder the possibility of future relations with
the Tau’ri
CARTER: Sir…I’ve already spoken with Dr Marrell, he says they can use the
implant technology to determine if the memories genuine or not…
LANDRY: I don’t want him hooked up to that machine again without one of you
present…
CARTER: I’ll be observing the analysis…in the mean time Teal’c and Daniel
have been granted access to all the material relative to the investigation…
LANDRY: *nods* Very well…*gets up, leaves, Carter standing too*
SCENE: Back on the planet in the Lab, Marrell and Amuro wait, Mitchell and
Carter entered escorted by Officer and two armed guards.
OFFICER: Dr Marrell and Dr Amuro will be conducting the analysis… now if
there’s anything else you require…
CARTER: As a matter of fact there is…I understand a sample of Colonel
Mitchell’s blood was taken…when he was arrested…
OFFICER: in order to determine his blood alcohol level…yes…
CARTER: we’d like a portion of that sample sent back to Stargate
Command…just to…corroborate your results of course…
OFFICER: I’ll see to it…*heads for door*
MARRELL: You can take the Guards with you…
OFFICER: *points at Mitchell* This man has been accused of murder.
MARRELL: I don’t want them in my lab.
OFFICER: *hesitates, turns to his guards…* You can wait outside…*they follow
him out*
MITCHELL: You fellas sure you want to be left alone with me…
AMURO: Dr Varrick was our colleague… if we thought of one minute you
actually killed her we wouldn’t be helping you…
CARTER: Then who do you think did kill her…? *Amuro looks to Marrell*
MARRELL: Reya was going to do everything she could to oppose the
militarization of the project…so…they…got rid of her…
MITCHELL: Why frame me?
AMURO: They assumed you’d claim diplomatic immunity and therefore no
prosecution would be necessary…whole thing was to be swept under the carpet…
MITCHELL: They assumed wrong…
MARRELL: And for that we are grateful
AMURO: Yeah…
CARTER: Can you prove the memories false?
AMURO: Well unfortunately Dr Carrick was the most qualified to do this work…
MITCHELL: I’m sure you’ll do fine…
AMURO: …Please…*they walk over to the chair, Amuro setting Mitchell up,
Marrell fiddles with buttons, while Carter watches*
MARRELL: Brain activity is extremely fluid…We can’t read a memory like
opening a draw and pulling out a file…patterns shift and mutate… one memory
colors another…
AMURO: That’s why its so difficult to create a successful graft… you have to
be careful not to create to many inconsistencies…
MARRELL: Alright Colonel…we need to establish a base line…what I have done,
identify a series of key memories from your childhood…these are seminal
moments…they stand out like signposts…and they influence everything that
came after them…I’m going to activate one now…*turns to Machine*
FLASH
NURSE ON INTERCOM: Dr peters to examination room 1. Dr Peters.
A little boy (Mitchell) sits in the corridor of a hospital, a nurse come
touching his shoulder.
CARTER: (voiceover) You alright?
FLASH
Back in the lab, Mitchell lies back.
MITCHELL: Yeah…its just…weird…
CARTER: What are you seeing?
MITCHELL: I’m in the VA hospital…where they brought my father after his
accident…
CARTER: he was a test pilot right?
MITCHELL: Yeah…
SCENE: Young Cameron enters the hospital room, his dad, turns with the help
of a nurse revealing he has lost both of his legs. His dad looks down and
then at Cameron, worried unsure. Young Cameron smiles, and so does his dad.
SCENE: Back in the lab
MITCHELL: It’s the first time I saw him after the crash…scared the hell out
of me to see him like that…somehow he… made it seem everything was gonna be
ok…
MARRELL: We’re moving into a related memory…*hits a few buttons*
MITCHELL: It’s a couple of months later…
FLASH
Young Cameron and his father are sitting on the hospital bed watching the
launch of the first space shuttle on the TV…
MITCHELL: (voiceover) we’re watching the launch of the first space shuttle…
God…I can’t be much more than…10 years old…
DAD: *shuttle takes off* Go baby go baby go! What do you think of that Cam?
Space planes…I tell you what… if they can pull that off… the least I can do
is walk again…right?
FLASH:
Back in the lab, Amuro removes the wires from Mitchell
AMURO: Well done Colonel…
MITCHELL: so what’s next?
MARRELL: With this data… we should be able to precisely calibrate the
equipment and then comes the hard part…
AMURO: We’ll need to run through your memories of the murder…we may have to
do it several times…
MTICHELL: Great.
SCENE: Jackson and Teal’c walk into the Emissary’s office
EMISSARY: Teal’c… Dr Jackson… what can I do for you?
JACKSON: We’ve got a problem…ah…this data file *holds up disk* was suppose
to contain all the materials relative to the murder investigation but…large
sections of Dr Varricks personal records have been deleted…*passes it to
him*
EMISSARY: Well she was involved in a number of our most top secret
projects…the deletions were made in the interests of national security…but
I’m sure there’s nothing in the missing material that has any baring on the
investigation…
TEAL’C: How are we to be certain?
EMISSARY: Because I’m telling you.*Jackson takes back the disk*
SCENE:
FLASH
Mitchell and Reya talking at the party…moves to her smiling at him just
before they left.
FLASH
Mitchell hitting her with the Statue, as she screams, anger on his face.
FLASH
The two kissing.
FLASH
Mitchell waking, looking at his bloodied hands.
FLASH
Mitchell seeing Reya’s body that morning.
FLASH
Back in the lab.
AMURO: We must be missing something…
MARRELL: We’ve been through it three times.
CARTER: *Walks over…* what’s the problem?
AMURO: well maybe we should run another diagnostic…
MARRELL: *points at screen* its not gonna change the result. *takes a deep
breath* I need some Air. *walks off*
AMURO: So far we can’t find any evidence that the memory is false… According
to these results, Colonel Mitchell really did murder Dr Varrick. *They turn
and look at Mitchell*
SCENE: Carter heads out after Marrell
CARTER: Dr Marrell…you have to continue with the analysis…please…You know he
didn’t do this…
MARRELL: *looks at her* That’s not what the machine says…
CARTER: Look…I know Dr Varrick was your friend…
MARRELL: She was more than that Colonel…*looks away* she was my wife *Carter
shifts uncertainly* we had been separated for 2 years…I guess I was still
hoping there might be a chance…*looks at her* I can’t help you.
SCENE: Harriman enters Landry’s office.
HARRIMAN: Sir… Dr Lam’s in surgery but she wanted you to see this right
away... *hands over file* it’s the results of the analysis of Colonel
Mitchell’s Blood sample.
LANDRY: *opens it* anything useful?
HARRIMAN: Yes sir…she wanted you to know that the…Tripanens were negative
but the CK and mioglobins were up… No wait... *closes eyes, thinking* uh…the
mioglobins were negative but the CK and Tripanens were up…No wait…
LANDRY: Walter…
HARRIMAN: Sir…whatever it was… it means that when the sample was taken
Colonel Mitchell had been recently either stunned or…rendered unconscious…by
some kind of electrical charge…
LANDRY: Like a Zat Gun?
HARRIMAN: Yes sir…or some…such similar…uh…thing.
Landry nods, waits…then waves hands. Harriman leaves. Landry shaking head.
SCENE: Emissary’s office, he sits reading the file, Carter, Jackson and
Teal’c standing before him.
EMISSARY: This is hardly proof of Colonel Mitchell’s innocence…
JACKSON: wow…on Earth you have to prove Guilt…*at the Emissary’s look* I
know…we’re not on Earth…
EMISSARY: I’ll admit its enough to suggest to them that the investigation
should continue…but Dr Marrell has expressed reluctance to help you any
further…
CARTER: At least let us talk to him…
SCENE: In the Lab.
MITCHELL: *to Marrell* I’m sorry about Reya. She told me…she’d been married…
she didn’t tell me it was you…
MARRELL: Would it have made a difference?
The rest of SG-1 stand with Mitchell.
MITCHELL: I didn’t kill her.
MARRELL: Even if I wanted to help you there’s nothing more I can do…
CARTER: Why not…
AMURO: Well as you know we used Colonel Mitchell’s own memories to establish
a comparative standard and normally that should have been enough to identify
any false readings…but…we were unable to do so…which means…either the memory
is genuine or the transfer was so expertly done that the ordinary methods of
detecting it are useless…
TEAL’C: What other methods are there?
MARRELL: Well the only way would be to compare what happened the other night
with a genuine memory of similar content and emotional resonance. So…unless
Colonel Mitchell’s made a habit of killing innocent people… we’re out of
options.
MITCHELL: …I may have what you need…*they all look at him,* hook me
up…*walks to the chair*
SCENE: The readings on the machine come up, Marrell points.
MARRELL: There it is…
JACKSON: What are we looking at?
AMURO: The emotional resonance pattern of this memory is very similar to
that of Dr Varrick’s murder.
Shot on Mitchell, eyes shut tight, looking quite disturbed by what he’s
remembering. Zoom out
FLASH
Mitchell it a fighter plane.
MITCHELL: Mustang leader this is Mustang 3…do we have a confirmation on the
target yet?
MUSTANG: negative Mustang 3 US reports we are still waiting on Intel,
maintain cabin.
MITCHELL: I have tallied three vehicle convoy just like the man said…
MUSTANG: Copy that Mustang 3 we are still trying to confirm that the target
is in the convoy…
MITCHELL: *sounds of shots fired* triple A on my three…breaking left…
FLASH
AMURO: His heart rate just shot up. Breathings shallow.
Mitchell is tense, frowning, gripping the chair
FLASH
MITCHELL: I’m taking fire…do we have a confirmation yet…*dodging other
plane* not exactly friendly skies out here boys and girls…can I get a
confirmation on that target…
MUSTANG: Mustang 3 you are cleared hot…repeat you are cleared hot.
MITCHELL: pretty sure about this?
MUSTANG: that’s an Affirmative. Bump up to 1500 for react position.
MITCHELL: Roger that. *moves up, arms weapon* Weapon is armed…*hits button*
bombs away *bomb releases dropping through the sky*
MUSTANG: Mustang 3! Mustang 3! Abort Abort!
MITCHELL: What? No…nu-nu-no…the bomb is away. What the hells going on
mustang leader?
MUSTANG: We’ve lost confirmation on the target…
MITCHELL: You’ve got to be kidding me.
MUSTANG: Can you confirm hit?
MITCHELL: Stand by…*looks out window as the bomb blows up the three trucks*
The target is destroyed…oh shit…
SCENE: Captain Mitchell sits in the office of his CO, Head bowed, and
clenching hands.
AIRMAN: Sorry about that Captain. We were relying on local ally
intelligence…so obviously someone dropped the ball…
MITCHELL: Who is the target? Was he in the convoy or not?
AIRMAN: *leans back* Don’t do this to yourself?
MITCHELL: Who was in the convoy sir?
AIRMAN: As far as we know it was a group of refugees… this wasn’t your
fault…
MITCHELL: But it doesn’t change the fact that I have to live with it…for the
rest of my life.
FLASH
Mitchell wakes sitting up; Carter walks over to help him take off the wires.
MITCHELL: Please tell me you got what you need?
MARRELL: We’re analyzing the results now…just give us a few moments…
Mitchell gets out of the chair, rubbing his face he sits on the step, Carter
sitting by him. He takes a deep breath.
CARTER: You ok?
MITCHELL: …*clenches jaw* …no…
MARRELL: *machine beeps* it worked…*grins* the new data indicates that the
memory of Reya’s murder was implanted.
CARTER: *Mitchell breathes a sigh of relief* Thank god
AMURO: *stands* I’ll inform the Emissary.
MITCHELL: Hang on a second…*Amuro stops* we may have proved that I didn’t
kill her…*eyes red and watery* but we’re not finished…not by a long shot.
*to Carter* I have to know who did it. *she nods* and I’m not leaving here
until I find out.
SCENE: Amuro and Marrell are helping Mitchell back into the chair.
CARTER: What exactly are we looking for?
Because we know the memory was implanted we can expect to find anomalies…
little moments where the brain is simply incapable of dealing with the
inconsistencies that arise as a result of the graft…now…often these take the
form of missing time…or…sudden changes in the identities in the people
around us…typically they centre on the splice points…. Where the memory
starts and stops.
AMURO: The problem is…they can often be difficult to detect…*walks over to
the computer with Marrell*
MITCHELL: Hey Sam…Thanks.
CARTER: He’s ready.
SCENE: Emissary sits in his office, when Jackson and Teal’c enter.
JACKSON: You wanted to see us?
EMISSARY: I understand Dr Marrell and Dr Amuro were able to determine that
the memory was an implant…*Jackson Nods* I must say…I’m relieved…a trial
could have been extremely detrimental to relations between our worlds.
TEAL’C: Not to mention inconvenient for ColonelMitchell
EMISSARY: yes. Of course. I’m sure he’d like to return to Earth as soon as
possible
JACKSON: Actually…he’ll still in the lab.
TEAL’C: Colonel Mitchell believes that an analysis of the false memory could
prove useful in determining the identity of the murderer…
EMISSARY: I’m sorry…*puts down glass* but I won’t allow it. *gets up walking
to desk* we’ve already been more than generous in putting our most important
scientists and facilities at your disposal to determine Colonel Mitchell’s
innocence. But now its time they got back to their research.
JACKSON: Look…all we’re asking for is a little more time.
EMISSARY: The project is already behind schedule…Dr Marrell is the most
qualified to lead the research now…and his new responsibilities preclude him
from participating in this investigation anymore.
JACKSON: Colonel Mitchell was assaulted…His memories were manipulated
against his will and…an innocent woman was murdered… now I’ve only worked
with the Guy a short period of time but I’m pretty sure he’s not gonna let
this one go…and if you want to get in his way…lets just say… when it comes
time to decide if we want to pursue this relationship his opinions going to
carry a lot of weight.
SCENE: LAB.
FLASH
Reya crawling away fast across kitchen floor screaming.
Mitchell’s face contorted in anger, hitting her with the statue.
FLASH
Mitchell sits up, taking a deep breath.
CARTER: Cam?
MITCHELL: Nah I’m good…
AMURO: Well…are you sure you wanna continue this? It’s possible that there
are no anomalies or they could be buried so deep, we’ll never find them even
if we go over it 100 times.
MITCHELL: It’s the least I can do for her now… let’s keep going.
AMURO: ok...
Mitchell lies back, closing eyes. A little later…Marrell and Amuro focusing
hard on reading Carter pacing.
AMURO: There’s nothing here.
MARRELL: There has to be…I’ll find it…
AMURO: Marrell I know she meant a lot to you but how much longer can we put
the poor man through this?
MARRELL: He wants to do it! *shifts* Look we know the memories false by
comparison. There must be some other indication.
AMURO: We’ve been through this a dozen times…the splice points are
indistinguishable…
MARRELL: I know but I now realize that’s because he was rendered unconscious
before the procedure was begun….and he was still unconscious long after it
was completed…the whole thing has the quality of a dream …it’s…jumbled up in
his mind…
AMURO: Alright…so what can we do about it…?
MARRELL: focus on the inconsistencies in the memory itself…
AMURO: but what if there aren’t any?
MARRELL: I’m wasting my time *Carter looks round* explaining this to you!
Can I do my work?
AMURO: *walks over to Carter* how he doing?
MARRELL: not too good. Doesn’t sound like you’re making a lot of progress…
AMURO: Marrells determined but… I don’t know…the graft appears to be
flawless…
FLASH
Reya smiles at Mitchell before they leave the party…
Mitchell walks down corridor to the drinks…
FLASH
The screen of the computer flashes indicating a point in Mitchell’s memory…
MARRELL: I’ve got something… There…you see it?
AMURO: yes.
CARTER: What is it?
MARRELL: it’s what we’ve been looking for… Colonel Mitchell can you hear me?
MITCHELL: Yeah.
MARRELL: We’ve identified a point in the memory where we think there might
be an anomalies…I’m going to activate it now… I want you to tell me what you
see…
Beeping and…
FLASH
Walking down to the drinks…going to pick up statue…
FLASH
MITCHELL: I’m in the House…I’m walking down the hallway…
FLASH
Mitchell passes mirror, but the image is slightly blurred…
Reya runs into kitchen…
Screaming, she falls
FLASH
MITCHELL: Whoa…no…no…I…uh…no…I’ve lost it…go back…
MARRELL: Just a minute…
FLASH
Reverse Mitchell taking statue, back to his walking by mirror…
FLASH
MITCHELL: Stop! There…can you run It again…maybe slow it down a little.
FLASH
walking by mirror, slower…the face obscured
MITCHELL: (voice over) I can see my reflection…my reflection in the mirror
FLASH
MITCHELL: But the face…is blurry…
MARRELL: It’s an anomaly…if the reflection in the mirror is not your
own…your brain can’t deal with it…that’s why it’s blurry…
MITCHELL: Can you clean it up?
MARRELL: *turns back to computer…shakes head* uh…I think so…*fiddles*
FLASH:
walking by mirror…the face is clearer revealing the killer…………
MARRELL!
FLASH
Mitchell jumps up, staring at Marrell, they all turn to look at him.
CARTER: What did you see…who was it?
MITCHELL: *points at Marrell* it was him.
MARRELL: *they all look at him*
CARTER: are you sure?
MITCHELL: *pulls off wires* positive…it was Marrell…
AMURO: That’s impossible…if he killed her…why would he be helping us…I mean
he wanted to reveal the identity of the murderer more than anyone.
CARTER: What if he doesn’t know?
AMURO: What you’re saying he killed her…Implanted the memory in Colonel
Mitchell…
CARTER: And then erased it from his own mind
MITCHELL: Is that possible?
AMURO: Theoretically yes but-
MARRELL: *stands* This is insane…I…I loved her…
MITCHELL: But she left you…didn’t she…and you never got over it…then you saw
me leave the party with her…
MARRELL: *shakes head* look…its impossible…
AMURO: Well there’s one way to find out for sure…if he really did erase his
own memory…he would have had to replace it with something else…we can check
for anomalies the same way we did with Colonel Mitchell…
MARRELL: Go ahead… you won’t find anything…
SCENE: Emissary’s office. SG-1 and Amuro stand before the Emissary
AMURO: We found that he had to identical memories…one from the night of the
murder…on from several nights before…except no two memories are exactly the
same…its like signatures…when they’re identical that’s when you know they’ve
been forged…as far as he knows he was in bed sleeping the whole time…
CARTER: He didn’t want to just fool us…he wanted to fool himself…to get rid
of the guilt…
MITCHELL: And that’s what did him in…
SCENE: Mitchell, lies in the chair once again…Amuro fiddles with various
buttons
AMURO: *turns to Carter* we’re done…*Mitchell sits up*
CARTER: How do you feel?
MITCHELL: *they remove the wires…* Fine…I guess
AMURO: I’ve erased the implants…you should no longer have the image of
killing Dr Varrick in your mind… but all of your genuine memories should be
intact…
FLASH
Mitchell and Reya kissing
FLASH
MTICHELL: *smiles* I still remember her…thanks.
MARRELL: *enters with the Emissary* Dr Amuro *shakes Amuros hand* and you
must be our visitors from Earth…
AMURO: Are you alright?
MARRELL: Well…no…obviously you’ve heard what happened to Reya…*Mitchell
shifts, confused* to be honest I still can’t believe she’s really gone…but
I…I talked it over with the emissary…and we both agreed that the best thing
for me now…is to get back to work…it was nice to meet you…*he leaves, Amuro
following*
MITCHELL: *emissary walks over to him* what the hall is this?
EMISSARY: He thinks she died in an accident…and he’ll continue to think
that…for the rest of his life…
CARTER: You’re gonna just let him get away with murder.
EMISSARY: He doesn’t know he killed her. There was no way to recover that
memory…
MITCHELL: *stands* and that’s suppose to make it ok?
EMISSARY: It was for the good of the project and Dr Varrick would have
understood that.
SCENE: Landry enters the locker rooms; Mitchell is already changed into
Civis…
LANDRY: I read your report… not sure I’ve ever seen language like that used
in an official air force document before…
MITCHELL: Sorry about that sir…
LANDRY: oh you should have seen what Colonel Carter and Dr Jackson wrote.
MITCHELL: Yes sir… *pulls jacket out of locker putting it on*
LANDRY Colonel Carter told me what you had to do to prove your
innocence…something about reliving a difficult memory…course uh…she didn’t
know what it was all about…she hasn’t read your service record like I have…
MITCHELL: I hadn’t thought about it in a long time…but I guess something
like that never goes away…does it?
LANDRY: no…
MITCHELL: when it happened… I almost resigned my commission.
LANDRY: *pats his shoulder* I’m glad you didn’t *leaves*
Mitchell looks at the photo stuck on his locker…
Remembering… Mitchell and his dad walking through a park, his dad using
crutches…
DAD: I understand how you feel…but leaving the air force won’t change what
happened…won’t make you feel any better…
MITCHELL: You know you suck at pep talks dad…
DAD: I’m just being realistic…what else are you going to do? Become an
airline pilot? Fly the… new York-DC Shuttle five times a day…mow the lawn on
Sundays?
MITCHELL: Ah doesn’t sound too bad…
DAD: Yeah well…for someone else maybe…but now for you…*shakes head* it would
have been easier if you had grown up to be more like your mother…but you’re
just like me…always looking to the Horizon…always looking for something
more…
MITCHELL: *shakes head* no…I’m not like you dad…I’m not that strong…
DAD: No that’s where you’re wrong kid…you just don’t know it yet…
Fades back to Mitchell looking at photo, he closes locker and heads home.
The end
