Previously on MISSING:

Nicole: I’m gonna forget this whole thing and go check out that new dance club.

Antonio: oh yeah, you just waiting for Jess?

Nicole: no I’m going solo.

(Two guys are driving out on the street that night they’re playing with the radio and opening beers. Nicole is in a different car when she hears he cell phone ring and she reaches for it. The two cars crash into each other.)

Nicole is unconscious she is being rushed into the emergency room.

Next scene: Jess and Collin are out at a carnival on that very same night.

Jess: hey you.

Collin: what’s up?

Jess: what you thinking?

Collin: I’m thinking my place.

Jess: it’s closer.

Collin: it’s not close enough.

(A blonde haired young woman comes towards them and hands them a flyer)

Woman (Marissa): have you seen this man? He’s been abducted, if you see him call that number.

Jess: abducted?

Woman (Marissa): yeah, I know it’s hard to believe something like that could happen in the real world.

Jess: no, I believe it could.

Woman (Marissa): thanks, most people think I’m crazy.

(The woman walks away and Jess starts to go after her calling “miss” just when her cell phone rings. Jess picks it up.)

Jess: Mastriani (long pause) Oh my god.

Next scene: in the hospital, Jess and Antonio are rushing to find Nicole with Collin not far behind

Antonio: did you call Pollock?

Jess: I left a message. He’s at a house committee meeting.

(She sees a doctor and she rushes towards him)

Jess: (to doctor) Excuse me! Doctor. We’re looking for Nicole Scott, I’m Agent Mastriani.

Doctor: This way.

(Jess signals Collin to wait behind while she and Antonio rush to the hospital room where Nicole is)

Jess: Nicole!?

Doctor: She has severe head trauma.

Antonio: pupils?

Doctor: dilated.

Jess: Nicole?

(Nicole is unconscious on a hospital bed attached to a respirator)

Antonio: is she responsive?

Doctor: not so far.

Jess: is she gonna be alright?

Doctor: I’ve ordered a CAT scan we should know more after that.

Antonio: best case?

Doctor: a severe concussion

Jess: and the worst?

Doctor: intracranial hemorrhaging and baseline skull fractures which could result in a vegetative state.

Jess: (shocked) what?

Doctor: it’s not for sure, it’s just a possibility.

Jess: No, it’s not a possibility.

(Jess turns around towards Nicol`e to comfort her)

Doctor: (to Antonio) you have medical training, so you understand this can get worse.

(Antonio nods affirmative)

Doctor: uncontrolled bleeding; this is potentially fatal.

Jess: oh my god.

Antonio: Jess, it’s not the likeliest thing we just don’t know for sure yet.

Doctor: Agent Mastriani as health care power of attorney, I need you to stay close.

Jess: health care what?

Doctor: Agent Scott designated you as her decision maker in the living will. There was a note with her ID.

Jess: umm what do I have to do?

Doctor: if her condition deteriorates, or if we have to decide whether to resuscitate her, that’s your call, Excuse me.

(The doctor leaves and Jess and Antonio turn back to Nicole)

OPENING CREDITS

(Jess and Antonio sit in to chairs against the wall right beside Nicole in the hospital room when Collin knocks at the door. Jess goes out to see him.)

Jess: hey

Collin: hey

(He hands her a coffee)

Jess: thank you.

Collin: my boss called…

Jess: you have to go?

Collin: there’s this thing that taken a year to set up, I’m sorry.

Jess: it’s okay.

(Collin looks through the window of the hospital room at Nicole)

Collin: what are they saying?

Jess: they’re not.

Collin: look I’m really sorry, if I don’t go…

Jess: I know, you gotta go, bye.

(They lean in and kiss and then Collin leaves and Jess comes back into the room)

Jess: I just hope she’s not in any pain.

Antonio: no, she’s not. She’s sleeping soundly. It’s her body’s way of healing itself.

(It seems as if several hours passed Jess and Antonio had fallen asleep in the chairs. Suddenly Nicole wakes up and opens her eyes)

Nicole: guys?

(Antonio wakes up, followed by Jess)

Jess: oh my god, you’re awake. You were in a car accident. The other driver was almost killed but he’ll make it. Umm… you’re in the hospital.

(Nicole starts to get up and feels a bit of pain but still manages to sit up right on her bed. The doctor walks in.)

Doctor: oh, well good morning. How are you feeling?

Nicole: good. Great.

Doctor: yours just came back negative, no cranial hemorrhaging, no fractures, look straight ahead for me.

(The doctor flashes a flashlight at Nicole and inspects her eyes)

Doctor: well your signs are good.

Nicole: so I can go?

Doctor: (chuckles a bit) not quite yet. You’ve been very lucky but concussions are serious and unpredictable. You can expect short-term memory loss, headaches, blurred vision, occasional vertigo.

(Nicole nods)

Nicole: sounds like a regular morning.

(Nicole chuckles)

Antonio: (seriously) just listen to the doctor please.

Nicole: I’m listening.

Doctor: another concussion could have extreme consequences.

Jess: wait, how extreme?

Doctor: well fatal. (To Nicole) Sit tight for a bit we’ll be back for another look soon.

Nicole: okay.

(The doctor leaves the room. Nicole sighs then slowly and carefully lies back down. Jess gets a vision. She opens the curtain that divides Nicole’s room and sees a man strapped down to a bed. He has the “missing” flyer Jess received on him. Behind him there is a black board that says “Casa de Jorge, Today’s meal: Jerk Chicken & Dumplings with Negril Sauce……$29.00”. Nicole looks over at Jess and immediately understands what’s going on.)

Nicole: okay, either concussions are contagious or you just saw something.

Jess: yeah, uh… this guy (takes out the flyer she got at the carnival) someone handed this to me on a street. I forgot all about it when I heard you hurt.

(Jess hand the flyer to Nicole and she tries to analyze the situation)

Antonio: you’re not working Nic.

Nicole: I’m not gonna hurt myself lying in bed listening to tales from dreamland, okay? (To Jess) what did you see?

Jess: well the guy in the flyer he was strapped to a bed and there was a menu behind him that said “jerk chicken & dumplings”.

Antonio: Jerk chicken is from the Caribbean or South America.

(Jess’s cell phone rings and she checks who it is on her caller ID)

Jess: it’s Pollock.

Nicole: don’t tell him I’m in the hospital.

Antonio: you have to tell him.

Nicole: don’t. Please just don’t.

(Jess answers her phone)

Jess: Mastriani

Pollock: I was trapped for days with congressmen while the held our budget in their oily hands and now I have to take my daughter to a birthday party, so I need you to talk fast.

Jess: I uh… had a vision.

Pollock: faster.

Jess: I uh… saw this guy in trouble, his name was Tom Degrey.

Pollock: Tom Degrey is the son of Ares Degrey. Ares Degrey is the head of the Delcon oil company. He is a major player and a total bastard to everyone he meets, continue.

Jess: this woman came up to me, handed me a flyer. She said Tom had been abducted.

Pollock: is that it?

Jess: yes sir.

Pollock: well if Ares Degrey is involved in this you’re gonna need more. Listen I’m gonna take my daughter to a birthday party; I want you to continue on this. Jess whatever you do don’t make me look foolish.

Nicole: thanks Jess.

(Jess looks at her like “you owe me one”)

Nicole: okay so we gotta work fast.

Jess: one of us is gonna need to stay with you while the other one is going to have to find the girl with the flyers.

Nicole: no you don’t, I’m coming.

Antonio: no.

Jess: no.

Antonio: you’re not.

Nicole: okay I’ll stay until the doctor releases me but you guys go ahead. Your visions don’t play around; there’s gotta be something here, go.

(Jess grabs her stuff and leaves the room, Antonio follows her out and Nicole lies back down in her bed)

Next scene: At a park Jess and Antonio are talking to the woman who handed Jess the flyer the night before.

Antonio: why do you think Tom Degrey has been kidnapped?

Woman (Marissa): because I saw it.

Jess: why didn’t you tell anyone?

Woman (Marissa): I told everyone, his family, the police.

Antonio: what did the police say?

Woman (Marissa): that they couldn’t find any evidence. Nobody is listening to me. They’re afraid.

Antonio: why would that be?

Woman: do you know his family? They’re plutocrats.

Antonio: okay…

Woman (Melissa): people who exercise power through their wealth. It’s all about control for them. They don’t want anyone to know what happened to him.

Jess: because…

Woman (Marissa): I don’t know. But I know what I saw.

Antonio: which was…

Woman (Marissa): I was going to meet Tom at the Canal Park when three men grabbed him and pushed him into a car.

Jess: when was this?

Woman (Marissa): a week ago Friday. Nine days.

Antonio: what were you doing at the park again?

Woman (Marissa): I told you I was going to meet him.

Antonio: Not at a restaurant or movie?

Woman (Marissa): (defensively) no at the park. He said he wanted to talk. (Pause) He broke up with me last month, from South America.

Antonio: did he say why?

(She nods her head negative)

Woman (Marissa): he just kept saying it was for my own good.

Jess: but you went to meet him in the park.

Woman (Marissa): he called me, suddenly, he said he was home and he wanted to see me. And of course I couldn’t go to his house.

Jess: why is that?

Woman (Marissa): are you kidding? His father hates me.

Antonio: why does he hate you?

Woman (Marissa): because he runs Tom’s life. He always has. I was Tom’s big rebellion. His father always laughed at me. He tells people I’m this crazy person stalking Tom. (She hands them some folded papers) These are emails he sent me over the past two years, they show equal feelings; I’m not chasing him. But he’s been a prisoner since he was born. I’ve been trying to help him to get his freedom from his father… and now he’s gone. You have to help him. Please help him.

Jess: we’ll try.

Woman (Marissa): I’m handing out more flyers at lunch. If we don’t help him he’ll die, I know he will.

(the woman walks away)

Antonio: (To Jess) okay.

Jess: yeah.

(Jess has a vision. The woman is screaming “Jess I found him, Jess, I found Tom.” She’s holding his hand and crossing a street towards Jess. A white van comes towards them. Jess screams “look out” Tom pushes the woman out of the way but he gets hit by the white wan.)

Antonio: what did you see?

Jess: Marissa and Tom, they almost got hit by a car. Antonio there’s something here. I think both of them are in danger.

Next scene: At the Bureau Jess and Antonio work on the case.

Antonio: Tom Degrey, heir to Delcon oil. He Went to Yale, Brown and Penn.

Jess: impressive.

Antonio: not really, his grades were fair to poor. He dad kept on binding him to new universities so he could get his degree.

Jess; okay so Marissa wasn’t the first time he disappointed his father.

Antonio: it maybe the last. His father sent him to South America on an oil survey. According to the passport records, he returned to the states a week ago. Now if Marissa is telling the truth he was abducted—

Jess: --you don’t believe her.

Antonio: I don’t know. Tom Degrey is in your visions I believe in those. What else you got?

Jess: Casa de Jorje means house of George. That could be like Georgetown.

Antonio: now your region.

Jess: okay I’m thinking about the menu in the vision. Negril Sauce.

Antonio: black sauce.

(Nicole walks towards them to everyone’s surprise)

Nicole: Alright now.

Antonio: you’re not supposed to be here.

Nicole: the doc signed me out so count me in.

Antonio: you’d say anything to get out of the hospital bed.

Nicole: you calling me a liar?

Antonio: I’m saying, I know you hate hospitals.

Nicole: which is why I heal so fast. Now where were we?

Antonio: on vision patrol. We got as far as black sauce.

Nicole: Pollock said that they were big in oil, that’s your black sauce.

Jess: The “N” in Negril was oversized.

Antonio: okay so N street, Georgetown, we’ve got Jorje. Let’s see what we get.

Jess: The Jerk Chicken and dumplings, they were twenty nine dollars.

Nicole: ha, that better be some hell-i-fied chicken. Punch twenty-nine in too.

(Antonio types in twenty-nine along with all the other clues into the computer)

Antonio: Blackbird Chicken Shack, N street and 29th, Georgetown.

Nicole: let’s go.

Next Scene: the three of them are in Georgetown where the Blackbird Chicken Shack is located.

Antonio: it’s not open.

Jess: (looks over at dumpsters on the side of a building) wait.

Nicole: what do you see?

Jess: dumpsters.

Antonio: little ones.

Jess: Dumplings?

Nicole: let’s check ‘em out.

(Jess and Antonio walk toward the dumpsters while Nicole is starting to get blurred vision from her concussion. She ignores it and goes over to help the two search. Nicole opens a dumpster and sees a man, pale and dead,)

Nicole: we got something here; and it ain’t jerk chicken.

Break to Commercial

(Pollock arrives at the scene, comes out of his car and under the yellow tape)

Pollock: tell me that isn’t Tom Degrey.

Antonio: it isn’t. Tom Degrey is 5’10” this guy is about 6’2”.

Pollock: good deduction, I’m rubbing off on you. So what is the dead man’s connection?

Antonio: Nicole and Jess are on the canvas. They’re going to see if anyone saw him earlier.

Pollock: that’s it?

Antonio: so far.

Pollock: eh, you’re on a roll. Slice and dice him see what you find.

Antonio: yes sir.

Next scene: Nicole and Jess back at the bureau.

Jess: so we have three different people who all saw the white van the girlfriend saw.

Nicole: but nobody got a plate, right?

Jess: aren’t we surprised.

Nicole: well it’s always worth asking. Let’s go check Antonio’s autopsy on the guy.

Jess: okay, in a minute.

Nicole: you need a break?

Jess: no uh… but you might. How you doing?

Nicole: I’m cool. Believe me… I have been hit in the head before.

Jess: which explains a lot.

Nicole: and I still recognize sass when I hear it too.

(Nicole slightly pushes Jess and gives her one of those looks but Jess only smiles.)

Jess: you know… it was kind of a surprise finding out that you gave me power of attorney.

Nicole: do you mind?

Jess: no, but it’s big… making that kind of decision.

Nicole: I trust you with my life everyday, Jess, why not on paper too?

Jess: just try to take care of yourself so we never have to get there alright?

Nicole: No doubt.

(They continue walking)

Jess: I want you to take a couple of breaks while we work on this case.

Nicole: you know that’s not my style.

Jess: well severe concussions aren’t you’re style either, but you got one. Look Nic, I’m at risk here. I mean I’m not telling Pollock what’s going on so the least you can do is take care of yourself in a basic way.

Nicole: I don’t know Jess it’s just—

Jess: you can still run the case, just let Antonio and I take the lead in the field, alright?

Nicole: we’ll see.

Jess: just give it a try… see how it goes.

Nicole: you are getting bossy, you know that?

(The walk all the way over to Antonio where he is working on the computer)

Nicole: hey

Antonio: hey, just uploading the prints on our John Doe.

Nicole: how was the autopsy?

Antonio: bitchin’.

Jess: you are the only person I know who finds autopsies “bitchin’”.

Antonio: our John Doe did not die of natural causes. He had blood pooled in his chest cavity which happens when you inhale something and die slumped over. Now that’s… bitchin’.

Nicole: inhaled something like…?

Antonio: poisonous gas, it was very quick.

Jess: like cyanide.

Antonio: but it wasn’t. I didn’t find any.

Nicole: what about cyanide?

(Antonio and Jess look at Nicole worried)

Jess: uh… Antonio ruled that out, Nic, he just said…

Nicole: (trying to cover is up) I meant anthrax.

Antonio: No, there was no source in the body.

Jess: you getting something?

(A picture uploads on the computer)

Antonio: Burton Miller, 29, arrests for trespassing and vandalism at a nuclear power plant, couple of logging camps, and…

Nicole: oil fields.

Jess: has been to South America in the last year?

Antonio: passport records… affirmative.

Nicole: this guy crossed paths with Tom Degrey in South America, maybe they did her too.

Jess: maybe that’s why Tom’s missing.

Antonio: okay, I’ve got Burton Miller’s last known address.

Nicole: great, let’s hit it.

(Nicole quickly walks away and Jess follows her with concern)

Jess: Nic…

Nicole: yeah.

Jess: Antonio will hit it.

Nicole: uh… the hell he will.

Jess: Nicole I need you to listen to me. Antonio is totally capable of handling this. I need you to come with me.

Nicole: since when do you call the shots?

Jess: since you couldn’t keep you poison straight a minute ago. Now let’s go interview Tom Degrey’s family.

(Nicole doesn’t look to satisfied but she agrees anyway)

Next scene: Nicole and Jess visit the Degrey residence.

(The maid shows the two in and Jess is talking to Antonio on her cell phone)

Jess: (to Antonio) yeah, we’re at the Degrey family estate, and you have got to see this place.

Antonio: yeah, well you should see this place.

Jess: did you find anything at Miller’s apartment?

Antonio: I’ve got pictures of Tom Degrey, alone and with others. I’ve got fingerprints too.

Jess: okay well we’ll talk to the family and meet you back at the office.

(An elegant woman approaches Jess and Nicole from behind)

Elizabeth Degrey: Hello I understand you’re FBI agents.

Nicole: yes, Agents Scott and Mastriani.

(They both shake her hand)

Elizabeth Degrey: Elizabeth Degrey. Should I have an attorney present?

Jess: this is about your brother Tom.

Elizabeth Degrey: God, he’s not hurt is he?

Jess: when was the last time you spoke with him?

(A man comes in and interrupts their conversation)

Ares Degrey: this morning.

Elizabeth Degrey: dad, these are Agents Scott and Mastriani.

Ares Degrey: yes?

Nicole: sir we have reason to believe that your son has been kidnapped.

Ares Degrey: well I’m delighted to tell you that you’re wrong. As I said I spoke to him this morning.

Jess: but Marissa Shelby witnessed his kidnapping.

Ares Degrey: Marissa Shelby is not a serious person. She’s well intentioned but unreliable, unstable in fact. And now if there’s nothing else…

(Ares Degrey begins to walk away when Nicole stops him)

Nicole: there is. We appreciate that the kidnappers asked you not to speak with us but we’re you’re best chance to get your son back alive. Let us help you sir.

Jess: we think we found the room where Tom was held.

Ares Degrey: impossible. I spoke with him. He’s free and well in South America.

Nicole: then we’d like to speak to him too.

Ares Degrey: He’s deep in the jungle on a survey. He checks in once a week and that once was this morning.

Jess: Mr. Degrey, Passport records show him back in the U.S. days ago.

Ares Degrey: then there is an error.

Nicole: and you’re making it more dangerous for him if you don’t come clean. Sir, we do this all the time its like a typical day at the office for us, you have to let us drive this.

Ares Degrey: one of the pleasures of my life is that I don’t have to do anything. Now excuse me.

(Ares Degrey walks out of the room)

Elizabeth Degrey: you’ll have to excuse my father. He gets unreasonable when questions arise concerning Tom.

Nicole: hmm… how so?

Elizabeth Degrey: he’s been grooming him to take over the business since day one, but Tom doesn’t have the family flare.

Nicole: and do you?

Elizabeth Degrey: well I enjoy it, that’s more than I can say for Tom but handing off to your daughter doesn’t provide the same satisfaction to some one like my father.

Nicole: hardly seems fair.

Elizabeth Degrey: well look at my life, do I have anything to complain about?

Jess: do you know anything about this? Has there been a ransom note?

Elizabeth Degrey: no. you really think something has happened.

Nicole: talk to your father (Nicole hands Elizabeth a card), if you learn anything…

Elizabeth Degrey: you know Marissa Shelby is strange but I think she loves Tom. I know my father told him to break things off but I don’t think he could.

Next scene: Back at the bureau…

Pollock: everyone’s comfy? We’re all having a nice relaxing time? I’m only asking because I just spent the last half hour explaining to the Attorney General why I am harassing the Degrey family. Now since the whole point of your lives is to add value to my life (Nicole makes an expression like “you’ve got to be kidding me”) and you are obviously failing to do so I’ll await your explanations with a keen interest.

Nicole: yes sir. Elizabeth Degrey checked the phone records of the family’s private line. The received cell phone calls from the same cell grid as the dead man’s residence.

Antonio: Tom DeGrey’s prints there.

Jess: and Tom’s girlfriend Marissa identified the dead man as one of the kidnappers.

Antonio: along with a man that’s on homeland securities watch list, Heraldo Luhan.

Pollock: this is improvement. Continue.

Jess: Luhan’s an eco-terrorist; he is wanted for bombing oil refineries in South America.

Antonio: he’s also a member of the organization “Ojo Para un Ojo”, OPO.

Pollock: impressive diction, agent. An eye for an eye.

Jess: who are they?

Pollock: They’re a South American terrorist group. I know them well.

Nicole: so they kidnapped Tom DeGrey to what? To stop Delcon oil from drilling?

Antonio: his father runs his own game and doesn’t want us on the field.

Pollock: I don’t like it at all but I understand it.

Antonio: well, permission to go after the DeGrey mainframe?

Pollock: granted. How solid is your witness on this kidnapping?

(Jess and Antonio glare at each other while Nicole just takes a sip of her coffee)

Antonio: well we have Tom DeGrey’s print in that residence, sir.

Pollock: are you kidding me? We don’t know long these prints have been there. My Chesapeake retriever could argue that point and court and win. Do you know where his girlfriend is?

Jess: usually handing out flyers, trying to find Tom.

Pollock: okay how about we go interrupt her and bring her in.

Next scene: Nicole and Jess go to the park to find Marissa

Marissa: (to a woman at the park) hi, this man is missing; if you see him would you please call that number immediately.

(On the other side of the park Jess and Nicole are talking while on their way to see Marissa)

Jess: you know what I hate about Pollock?

(Nicole is fiddling with her earring and due to her concussion does not hear a thing Jess said)

Jess: Nic? You know what I hate about Pollock?

(Nicole continues fiddling with her earring and doesn’t hear a word. Jess taps Nicole to get her attention)

Jess: Nic, you okay?

(Nicole finally turns and acknowledges Jess)

Nicole: of course.

(Nicole spaces out once again and continues to fidget with her earring)

Jess: it’s that he can always find the weakest point in whatever it is that you’re doing.

Nicole: yeah, me too.

(The two of them see a white van pulling up near Marissa)

Nicole: Jess look, the van.

(The van pulls over; a man comes out, abducts Marissa and drives away. Nicole says “damn it”, pulls out her gun and starts to run towards it and Jess runs after her. Nicole jumps in front of the van with her gun out. She yells “stop!” and gets a case of blurred vision. The van won’t stop but Nicole manages to roll out of the way right before the van hits her but unfortunately she hits her head in the process. Jess sees everything from a distance due to her lack of speed and she runs to Nicole’s aid.)

Jess: Nicole! Nicole! Oh my God! Nicole can you hear me!

Break to Commercial

Jess: Nicole! Nicole wake up!

(Nicole opens her eyes)

Jess: Nicole can you hear me?!

(Nicole regains consciousness and lifts her head off the ground)

Nicole: hey, hey, you don’t have to yell.

Jess: are you okay?

(Nicole takes a few seconds before answering)

Nicole: yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m fine. (Trying to make no big deal out of the situation) I’m fine, I can deal.

Jess: no! You can’t deal, you could have been killed! You could have gotten me killed!

Nicole: Jess, I would never put you in danger.

(Nicole picks up her phone and immediately makes a call)

Nicole: (into the phone) Agent Scott. I need an evidence support team at the park at 9th and Benning.

(Jess waits for her to finish in shock and aggravation)

Jess: (angrily) Nicole! Bad guys there, you down, me in the middle, that is danger!

Nicole: Jess I’m fine.

Jess: no you’re not fine! You just hit your head in a standard side roll!

Nicole: (taking it too lightly) it was a fluke. I’m not asking you to look after me, okay?

Jess: yes, you are! You gave me power of attorney!

Nicole: that’s if I was out of it.

Jess: what?! You trust me to know what’s best for you when you’re in a coma but not when your eyes are open and you’re staring at me?!

Nicole: (seriously) I know how to look after myself, stop.

Jess: Nicole in this condition, the way you are right now, do you know how to do what is best for you?!

(Nicole just stares at Jess with nothing to say)

Next scene: at the bureau Nicole and Jess are talking to Elizabeth DeGrey.

Nicole: we just want the truth. We know this group, OPO kidnapped your brother. Have you made any progress talking with your father?

Elizabeth DeGrey: yes, he put me on the phone with Tom.

(Nicole and Jess look at each other)

Nicole: he told us Tom couldn’t be reached.

Elizabeth DeGrey: uh… he happened to call in.

Jess: your brother called in?

Elizabeth DeGrey: yes. He’s still in South America, there was no kidnapping.

Nicole: we asked you to work on your father but he went to work on you, didn’t he?

Elizabeth DeGrey: I can’t discuss this any further.

Jess: was Marissa included in the ransom demand?

Elizabeth DeGrey: excuse me?

Jess: she was taken too.

Elizabeth DeGrey: Marissa’s been kidnapped?

Nicole: yes. Could that have anything to do with your father’s negotiations to get your brother back?

Elizabeth DeGrey: uh… I don’t know of any negotiations.

Jess: did Tom and Marissa ever live together?

Elizabeth DeGrey: No. what kind of questions are these?

Nicole: questions designed to save your brother’s life. And they’re not going to answer themselves, we need you for that.

Next scene: Pollock is in his office on the phone.

Pollock: (to the phone) Janice listen I am-I am trying to understand and I am trying to have patience, I just think we need to move in one direction on this. No I’m not-I’m not threatening you. I don’t understand why it is you can say how you feel and I am not allowed to do the same thing. Alright, that’s fine, I’m just telling you there’s a limit and frankly I am reaching it. (Pause) Alright, yeah, bye.

(Pollock hangs up the phone)

Pollock: (to himself) I love you, wow.

(Antonio enters the room)

Antonio: sir I got something…

Pollock: the secret desire to be fired, that would explain the lack of a knock.

(Antonio looks back at the door)

Antonio: no the door was open.

Pollock: the door was ajar suggesting a desire for privacy.

Antonio: oh I didn’t—

Pollock: let’s move on. You were gonna tell me how the man in the dumpster died, which poison?

Antonio: actually I don’t know that yet.

Pollock: but you know he connects to Tom DeGrey?

Antonio: (hesitantly) uh… no.

Pollock: you plainly have a death wish.

Antonio: no I was I able to put the tire tracks from Marissa Shelby’s abduction with a partial plate from witnesses. I got a match to a one Roger Dylan.

Pollock: address?

Antonio: yes sir, all you have to do is say the word.

Pollock: word, said, get out.

Antonio: right.

Next scene: Antonio and Jess at Roger Dylan’s address. A man runs out carrying a gun and Antonio shouts to him.

Antonio: Roger Dylan! FBI!

(They run towards him)

Jess: on the ground! Palms in the air!

(Antonio pushes Roger Dylan to the ground)

Roger Dylan: don’t shoot me.

Antonio: shut up.

Jess: (pulls the gun out of Roger Dylan’s back pocket) Gun.

Roger Dylan: that’s not mine.

Antonio: (repeating his stupidity) that’s not mine. You can do better than that.

(Jess cuffs Roger Dylan and the scene changes to an interrogation room, where Jess is questioning him)

Roger Dylan: It’s not. I don’t own it.

Jess: Roger, dead man’s got more game than this. Where is Burton Miller?

Roger Dylan: I don’t know who that is.

Jess: sure you do. He’s the dead guy we have in a drawer. He’s right down the hall, you wanna see him?

Roger Dylan: he’s dead?

Jess: wow… you are just too easy, you know that?

Roger Dylan: I want a lawyer.

Jess: sorry, you’re out of luck, you’re a terrorist.

Roger Dylan: no I’m not a terrorist.

Jess: OPO, Roger. Eye for an Eye, that’s a terror group. Makes you an enemy combatant. Now why did you kidnap Tom DeGrey and his girlfriend?

Roger Dylan: I want a lawyer.

Jess: look we have been over this, terror cases don’t get lawyers. Now you think about that (gives him a tap on the side of his shoulder), and I’ll be right back.

Next scene: at Antonio’s workspace, Antonio is inspecting Nicole by flashing a flashlight in her eyes.

Antonio: would you hold still?

Nicole: when have you ever known me to sit still?

Antonio: you have a stage 3 concussion, Nic.

(Nicole keeps squirming and moving around to avoid the flashing light)

Nicole: it’s over, I’m fine.

Antonio: light sensitivity…

Nicole: would you leave me alone (as she yanks the flashlight out of Antonio’s hands)

Antonio: irritability…

Nicole: who wouldn’t be irritable?

Antonio: winter, ball, cup.

Nicole: what?

Antonio: say them.

Nicole: forget about it!

Antonio: backwards.

Nicole: (shakes her head in acceptance and begins to say the first two words clearly) Winter, ball… (sighs) stupid.

Antonio: cup! And you didn’t say it backwards. Nic, concussions can heal but only if you stand down and you leave them alone. If you stay active and have another one—

Nicole: I won’t!

Antonio: it can be permanent.

(Jess walks in)

Nicole: hey, get anything?

Jess: it’s like punching sand, you?

Antonio: yeah, Delcon oil is having a big shin-dig tomorrow. They’re hosting the oil minister of the organization of South American states.

(Pollock approaches them)

Pollock: Bartollo Pama, one of the most powerful men in the western hemisphere, controls drilling rights in at least six countries. (He picks the flashlight up off the table) Are you affecting a repair in some small dark space, Agent Cortez?

Antonio: No sir the umm… (Looks over at Nicole and sees in her eyes that she does not want him to tell Pollock the truth) the junction box is…

Pollock: uh huh.

Nicole: so if the oil minister is at the DeGrey house…

Jess: it would explain why Ares DeGrey wanted to keep the kidnapping to himself. He doesn’t want to scare this guy off.

Pollock: he’s willing to sacrifice his son to do it, that’s very attractive.

Jess: or maybe the OPO wants the oil minister and they’re willing to trade Tom DeGrey to get him.

Nicole: then what do they need with… (Trying to remember while everyone stars at her) the girlfriend.

Jess: Marissa… Shelby.

Pollock: that’s a very good question. Do you have anything (flashing the flashlight at them) to light our darkened pathway, agent?

Antonio: No but I can tell you how Burton Miller died.

Pollock: there it is, the Cortez Phosphor Effect.

Antonio: hydrogen sulfide, anyone within five or ten feet is gone. That’s why people can die from toxic waste.

Pollock: so Burton Miller kidnaps Tom DeGrey and opens a can of toxic waste?

Antonio: you can find hydrogen sulfide in other places.

Pollock: and that would be?

Antonio: fertilizer containers, we found fertilizer in the dead man’s apartment, terrorists, fertilizer.

Nicole: they’re making a bomb.

Jess: like in Oklahoma City.

Pollock: you are hereby authorized to do anything and I mean anything until you find that bomb. I don’t want to hear about it, don’t tell me about it, do you understand? Do it now.

Next scene: Jess and Nicole at the DeGrey Estate, speaking with Ares DeGrey.

Nicole: sir, we have new information.

Ares DeGrey: so do I. Agent Scott and Mastriani, meet my son Thomas.

Tom DeGrey: hi. I understand you’ve been looking for me.

Break To Commercial

Ares DeGrey: you were right of course, my son had been abducted. I paid the ransom, now he’s home.

Nicole: how much was it?

Ares DeGrey: 5 million.

Jess: how did you pay it?

Ares DeGrey: wired to an account. Here’s the information.

Nicole: did they release Marissa Shelby too?

Tom DeGrey: what do you mean?

Nicole: she was snatched off the street, same as you.

Tom DeGrey: she’s been kidnapped?

Ares DeGrey: that’s not our concern.

Tom DeGrey: how can you say that?

Ares DeGrey: because it isn’t.

Nicole: so you think it’s a coincidence that Tom was abducted and then his girlfriend too?

Ares DeGrey: I’m not an idiot, agent. I didn’t say Marissa wasn’t kidnapped, I said she’s not our concern.

Tom DeGrey: I’m sorry; he’s always been like this.

Ares DeGrey: there’s no need to apologize.

Tom DeGrey: it’s one thing to be wrong and it’s another thing to be proud of it, dad.

Ares DeGrey: you should try taking pride in something yourself.

Jess: it would help us to know everything about how and where you were held.

Tom DeGrey: yes of co—

Ares DeGrey: Tom will cooperate fully, as will Delcon Oil.

Nicole: of course.

Next scene: Tom DeGrey is at a lineup at the bureau with Jess and Nicole. Roger Dylan is one of the men in the lineup. The men turn from the side frontward.

Tom DeGrey: sorry I don’t recognize anyone. Never really got a good look, I was blindfolded most of the time.

Nicole: nothing familiar about any of them?

(Tom nods his head negative)

Jess: what about these?

(She hand him photos of more criminals and he looks through them)

Tom: no, no. No I don’t recognize anybody.

Nicole: are you sure?

Tom DeGrey: yes, I’m sorry.

Jess: and you don’t remember anything about where you were held?

Nicole: no sounds, no smells?

Tom DeGrey: I told you before, no. It was just a blank concrete room. I guess I was too freaked out to notice anything else. There was one funny thing though.

Jess: what’s that?

Tom DeGrey: one of the guys who was holding me; he was talking on his phone and asking if the delivery of his Jaguar would be on time. I mean an environmental activist getting a luxury car?

Nicole: maybe he likes the wood-grain interior.

(Jess and Nicole walk out of the room)

Jess: They’re checking car dealers. I hope to God, Ares DeGrey did not pay 5 million dollars to find fertilizer bombs.

Nicole: no shortage of targets in Washington.

Jess: they could be anywhere.

Nicole: hopefully Roger Dylan knows where.

Next scene: an interrogation room where Pollock is questioning Roger Dylan.

Pollock: hello Roger, I’m John Pollock.

Roger Dylan: I have the right to a lawyer.

Pollock: no I don’t want you to worry about that. Worrying is how you got in this mess. You were worried about the environment, right? You joined the Sierra club and then Green Peach but then you figured you weren’t doing enough for the planet so you took a trip to South America, sponsored by OPO and they, well they showed you how you could change the world.

Roger Dylan: look I’m not a terrorist.

Pollock: I understand, I wanna tell you a story, Roger. It’s about a guy, young, out of the military, just got a new job, things are going well. He uh… carpools everyday with a co-worker and everyday they stop at the lower level of day care to drop of her kids and then they go up to the office. One day they stop off at day-care and the entire room, Roger, it just goes, it goes white. You see it’s interesting that’s what happens with very uh… very sudden, very intense pain.

Roger Dylan: I don’t have to hear this.

Pollock: oh but your, your brain, it shuts down the pain center. This is interesting, so the guy comes back on line and all he can see is blood and all he can hear is like screaming and the reason I know this is because I was that guy. Special Agent Colleen Brendan and her two kids were blown to bits right in front of me, right in a federal building, in Oklahoma City. This Roger, this, my friend (he pulls out a photo) is what she looked like when the fertilizer bomb went off.

(Roger can’t sit still at the sight of the photo)

Roger Dylan: I don’t wanna look at that, I don’t wanna see that.

Pollock: hey guess what? Guess what Roger? Neither do I but I do, have to. And you know what? This bomb of yours it goes off, you’re gonna see a lot worse.

Roger Dylan: no, I don’t know anything about a bomb.

Pollock: well of course you don’t know anything about a bomb! You’re a weakling! No one’s gonna trust you with this. So what I wanna do, why I’m here is to bring you up to current events. Burton Miller, he was building a fertilizer bomb. That’s why he died. Now Luhan he’s going to use it.

Roger Dylan: oh, no way, we were just going to get some money for the cause.

Pollock: there’s going to be lots ands lots of blood Roger. Do you understand that? Lots of innocent blood. And what I’m gonna do is I’m gonna take pictures of it and I’m gonna decorate your cell with them. Do you understand? That way you will be able to look everyday at these pictures of the blood and the gore and the horror that you made, day after day for the rest of your pathetic life.

Roger Dylan: I won’t!

(Roger bursts into uncontrollable tears)

Pollock: Roger, look at me (bangs on the table to get Roger’s attention) where is Heraldo Luhan?

Next scene: Antonio and Jess approach Heraldo Luhan’s location with an FBI support team. They see a man packing fertilizer bags into a white van.

Jess: FBI! Don’t move!

Antonio: On the ground! Palms up!

Jess: you are under arrest.

Heraldo Luhan: for what?

(Jess cuffs the man while Antonio takes a look into the van and sees the contents)

Antonio: heavy fertilizer.

Next scene: The team is at the bureau discussing and sorting things out.

Pollock: but he’s alibied?

Antonio: for the fertilizer yeah. He has a shell company that permits lay that stuff all over the city today, about 1,000 pounds of it.

Pollock: have we accounted for all 1,000 pounds?

Antonio: almost.

Jess: it doesn’t make any sense.

Pollock: unless it intended to do what it did, which was to get our focus.

Nicole: a diversion.

Antonio: from what? What are we missing?

Next scene: an interrogation room where Pollock questions Heraldo Luhan.

Heraldo Luhan: get these photos out of my face. (He pushes the photos away from him towards Pollock) What do I care about these people?

Pollock: that’s a good point; you don’t care about any people, do you?

Heraldo Luhan: I care about life, all life. The special rights we have to get to decide on who gets to live and who gets to die.

Pollock: but you, you get to decide what people die, is that right?

Heraldo Luhan: I am a white blood cell; I’m helping to kill off the parasites.

Pollock: yes, yes, you’re so dedicated nature, that your hostage heard you taking delivery on a, what was it, a new Jag?

Heraldo Luhan: you can’t be that stupid.

Pollock: oh I uh… I have my days.

Heraldo Luhan: you can’t really believe that The Jaguar is a car? Not really.

Pollock: what is it then?

(Heraldo Luhan just laughs hysterically in Pollock’s face)

Next scene: Antonio informs Pollock and the rest of the team at the bureau.

Antonio: Ollavera Menum, also known as The Jaguar and about 800 other aliases. South America’s premiere assassin for hire since 1989.

Pollock: the guy’s killed over 25 people that we know of, everything from drug lords to vice presidents, commands top dollar.

Jess: maybe they used the 5 million to hire him to kill that oil minister.

Nicole: we need to get a fix on his location and fast.

Pollock: Couple of dozens of government agencies have been trying to do that for over a decade.

Nicole: no photos or description.

Pollock: the only people who might have some clue to where he is are people who have used his services.

Jess: you mean like Columbian drug lords?

Pollock: exactly.

Jess: leave it to me.

Next scene: Jess is out on the street going to meet with Collin. He is in the middle of arresting some crooks when he sees Jess and approaches her.

Break To Commercial

Collin: what the hell are you doing here?

Jess: ehh… checking up on you.

Collin: you kidding?

Jess: yeah. I called your boss he said its cool.

Collin: what’s urgent?

Jess: Does this mean you’ve blown your cover with the Columbian drug gangs?

Collin: no, no way.

Jess: okay, then maybe you can put out some feelers for me. See what you can find out about a hired killer, Ollavera Menum, he’s also known as The Jaguar.

Collin: colorful.

Jess: yeah. I need to know his whereabouts. Is he in the country? In D.C.?

Collin: I’ll do what I can but no promises.

Jess: look I know that this is a huge favor and I will owe you something very special.

Collin: (with a smirk) well I’m dying to find out what that is so… I’m on it, alright?

Jess: alright.

Next scene: Pollock is speaking with Ares DeGrey at the DeGrey estate on the way to the gathering where many guests as well as Nicole reside.

Ares DeGrey: I already told you, my plans don’t change.

Pollock: this is a professional assassin we’re talking about. We have strong reason to believe he is going to make an attempt on the minister. You have to cancel.

Ares DeGrey: Security is a big part of the agreement I’m about to sign. If thinks I cant even secure my own backyard he’ll cancel those drilling concessions.

Pollock: the thing is he can’t sign anything if he’s dead.

Ares DeGrey: my guest is about to arrive.

(Ares DeGrey walks away from Pollock and a while later Pollock approaches Nicole)

Pollock: Status?

Nicole: bad. He won’t let any of our people on the grounds. Jess has rented cops. We’ve secured the perimeter but the sidelines, they’re wide open, the shooter could be anywhere.

(Both Pollock and Nicole look up at Ares DeGrey who is talking to two people, one of them probably the minister)

Next scene: Jess and Antonio are trying to figure out more from the bureau. Jess approaches him and they are walking together as they discuss.

Antonio: this is hopeless. I’ve placed Menum in Venezuela another source says Rio, two sources say he’s dead, another one says he never existed.

Jess: I wish.

Antonio: but two place him in America, one in D.C.

(Jess’s cell phone rings, she checks who it is and then answers it)

Jess: Mastriani, (pause) you sure? (pause) Really sure? (pause) okay, yeah I owe ya. (Now turns to Antonio) Menum is in Bogotá, on a job.

Antonio: how do you know?

Jess: I’ve got my sources too.

Antonio: well you owe them.

Jess: big time.

Antonio: alright, mind you that he’s not the shooter doesn’t mean they’re not gonna make an attempt on the minister.

(Jess is thrown into a vision. Marissa and Tom are having a picnic but the scenery is the bureau. There’s a picnic blanket and a picnic basket and Tom is dressed in an army uniform. Marissa says, “Write to me Tom. You can if you want. write.” And the vision is over.)

Jess: what the hell?

Next scene: The event at the DeGrey estate. Nicole and Pollock are walking around casually as they look around for anything suspicious. Nicole sees a man pull something out of his suit, assuming it’s a gun Nicole begins to run towards him until she sees she is wrong and she stops herself.

Next scene: back in the bureau Jess and Antonio interpret the vision.

Antonio: alright, there was a picnic in your vision?

Jess: maybe it was the event at the estate?

Antonio: like the one that’s going on right now?

Jess: picnic, garden, party… why was Tom in uniform?

Antonio: maybe it has to do with the jungle survey.

Jess: okay, she kept telling him to write to her. Maybe those are the emails he sent her?

Antonio: hold on I broke through the mainframe, there… all of Tom’s emails. The last one to Marissa was… a month ago.

Jess: when was Tom kidnapped?

Antonio: ten days ago. Wait a minute. He logged on to the mainframe four days ago. He… tapped into his father’s calendar?

Jess: while he was being held by kidnappers? That doesn’t make any sense.

Antonio: maybe he’s not being held at all…

Jess: because he’s one of them.

Next scene: At the even Nicole’s cell phone rings and she picks it up.

Nicole: (into the phone) Scott.

(She turns around and sees Ares DeGrey introducing the Minister to Tom. Tom pulls out a gun and Nicole jumps onto the minister, pushes him to the ground along with herself. Tom points the gun at his father. Pollock watches from far away and begins to run towards Ares DeGrey.)

Ares DeGrey: Tom.

Tom DeGrey: father, this is for you.

(Pollock jumps onto Tom and pushes him out of the way so he doesn’t shoot his father. Unfortunately he manages to shoot his father anyway but only in the arm. Screams are heard and Elizabeth DeGrey approaches her father.)

Elizabeth DeGrey: (to her father) are you okay?

(Nicole helps up the minister as Pollock and a few other men hold Tom and arrest him)

Pollock: Scott. Scott!

(She regains her strength and finally looks up at him)

Pollock: are you alright?

Nicole: yeah, fine. Let’s get him out of here.

(The two men pick up Tom and begin to take him away as he struggles and yells at to his father)

Tom DeGrey: I’m sorry!

Ares DeGrey: it’s alright son, I forgive you.

Tom DeGrey: I’m sorry I didn’t kill you!

Ares DeGrey: Tom?

Next Scene: At an interrogation room in the bureau Pollock enters where Tom DeGrey is waiting.

Pollock: You’re gonna tell me something…

Tom DeGrey: No I’m not.

Pollock: but before you do, I have someone who wants to see you.

(Tom’s sister Elizabeth enters the room, arms crossed and distressed)

Elizabeth DeGrey: do you have any idea what you’ve done?

Tom DeGrey: of course I do.

Elizabeth DeGrey: it’s like you don’t feel anything at all.

Tom DeGrey: actually I feel wonderful. I feel free.

Elizabeth DeGrey: what are you talking about?

Tom DeGrey: I joined the revolution because I was a prisoner of dad. But then I realized they were the same as him. They owned me, just like he did.

Elizabeth DeGrey: he loved you.

Tom DeGrey: he only loves what he owns Elizabeth, you know that.

Elizabeth DeGrey: no I don’t.

Tom DeGrey: then you’re gonna learn. Now I’m free, no one owns me.

Pollock: (interrupting) not completely. Elisabeth please sit down. We only love people we give a part of our freedom. So you love Marissa.

Tom DeGrey: so?

Pollock: so you have to save her life, you don’t have a choice. They only took her because of you.

Tom DeGrey: so I wouldn’t change my mind about the shooting?

Pollock: right but you did change your mind. They didn’t want you to shoot your father.

Tom DeGrey: I know, it just happened, because it was right.

Pollock: I understand. And now you’re going to tell me where she is before they kill her.

Tom DeGrey: I don’t know.

Pollock: well let’s try. They haven’t been here long; they don’t have a lot of safe places. They’re probably keeping her where they keep the fertilizer. Where is that Tom?

Tom DeGrey: I can’t cooperate with you. You’re not part of the global solution. You’re part of the problem.

Pollock: is that right? Why don’t you sit your punk ass down?

(Tom sits back down and Pollock continues talking)

Pollock: I want you to try and understand. The last guy who was near that fertilizer drowned in his own blood, you here me?

Tom DeGrey: yeah.

Pollock: okay, so now… where is Marissa?

Next scene: Nicole, Jess and an FBI support team enters a dark warehouse where the fertilizer is stored. Nicole hears some grunts and struggle. She calls Jess for help as she approaches the sound. They are shocked to find Marissa on the tied up, struggling on the floor. Jess begins to untie her.

Next scene: back at the bureau after the case is closed and everything is okay.

Pollock: is there uh… something you wanna… you want to tell me, Agent Scott?

Nicole: Ummmm… I don’t think so… except I’m doing my job sir.

(She announces proudly with a smile)

Pollock: I saw you after you hit Tom DeGrey; it looked like you took it on the chin.

Nicole: it was no problem sir.

Pollock: let me ask you something agent, I want you to be truthful. Are you someone who needs to be needed so much that you don’t even want us to solve a case without you?

Nicole: that could be you or me.

Pollock: sure, but we’re talking about you right now, agent. You’ve got promise, but you’re not good to anybody if you’re dead. (Nicole gives a quick look of discomfort knowing that Pollock knows exactly what she’s been hiding) Which you will avoid by sitting out the rest of this week and next and you will come back to desk duty until further notice.

Nicole: Desk duty?

Pollock: don’t bother agent, just say ‘yes sir’ otherwise I will suspend you and you will sit out anyway only without pay.

Nicole: I see your point

Pollock: thank you. Get some rest agent; you’re still on my dime.

Nicole: yes sir.

(Nicole watches Pollock walk away and then begins to leave, herself, just as Jess stops her)

Jess: Nicole. I know Antonio didn’t say anything and I never tipped him.

Nicole: you were right Jess. I wasn’t up to this and I put you in danger.

Jess: yeah well, I’ll take you at 50% over anybody else at 100.

Nicole: hey, I never said I was down to 50%.

Jess: (smiles) so what did Pollock say?

Nicole: he’s sitting me down.

Jess: good! That will give you time to get better, time to think…

Nicole: which is the last thing I need. I came so close to getting killed in that car crash.

Jess: I know.

Nicole: and it’s not the first time that I nearly died but I always thought I would go out, you know… saving someone’s life.

Jess: blaze of glory?

Nicole: glory is bull. I’m talking meaning and… I nearly had a senseless death.

Jess: but you didn’t.

Nicole: but it was close. Jess, if your death has no meaning, what does that say about your life?

(There is a moment of silence while they both think)

Jess: (taps Nicole on the side of her shoulder) come on, you need that club soda.

Nicole: you know what, on second thought, I’m gonna pass.

Jess: are you sure, I mean if you wanna talk…

Nicole: no, no, no, no, I’m fine. What I need to do is think. I don’t want to but, I need to.

Jess: alright.

(Nicole begins to walk away but then turns around)

Nicole: Jess… thanks for everything okay?

(Jess just smiles and holds up her hand in order to show goodbye and no problem)

Nicole: bye.

(Nicole parts leaving Jess on her own just watching)
