(Car pulls into the driveway of a house. Assistant Director John Pollock gets out with his briefcase. Pollock tries to unlock the door with his keys but isn’t able to.)

Janice: (over intercom) Hello John

Pollock: I’ll be in in a second (he struggles a bit) the key is stuck.

Janice: it’s not stuck, I changed the locks.

Pollock: When?

Janice: Today. You promised you would be home by seven.

Pollock: something came up, will you let me in please.

Janice: This has come up.

Pollock: The locks?

Janice: everything. Our marriage, our life.

Pollock: Janice because I’m late?

Janice: You’re years late John.

Pollock: I’m year-- Janice can you open up the door? Please. Can you open up the damn door?

(He knocks three times and looks through the door window. Janice walks towards the door and opens it)

Pollock: hey, what-what is this? What’s going on?

Janice: I think we need to take some time apart, just to figure out where we are.

Pollock: Janice—

Janice: --you know it as well as I do.

Pollock: (confused) I do know. I don’t-I don’t know that. As a matter of fact I have no clue about it.

Janice: don’t be angry.

Pollock: I’m not angry. Look. I’m not angry, I’m just, we should umm… can’t we just talk about it.

Janice: Good night John.

(She closes the door, Pollock still outside)

Pollock: Janice. Janice?

(The door locks. He watches her through the door window as she walks away.)

Next scene: Federal Bureau building, locker room. Jess enters as Nicole puts on her jacket.

Nicole: Hey

Jess: Hey

Nicole: How you doing?

Jess: A little bleary. I was up half the night.

Nicole: (as she straightens her jacket) this, by any chance, wouldn’t have something to do with Agent McHottie?

(Jess opens her locker)

Jess: I wish.

Nicole: Bet you do.

Jess: No, I was up because I kept having visions … of a scarecrow.

Nicole: A scarecrow?

(Jess looks into her locker and has a vision. She sees a female scarecrow coming closer to her, until they’re face to face. Jess quickly closes the locker)

Jess: a scarecrow. Female to be exact.

(Janey walks in)

Janey: (cheery) Morning!

Nicole: Morning.

Janey: I came in at six thirty to get some extra gym time and A.D. Pollock was finishing his workout. Does he ever sleep?

Nicole: I don’t think he ever goes home (Pause). So, Jess what do you think the scarecrow means?

Jess: I don’t know.

Janey: did you have another one of your episodes?

Jess: They’re visions.

Janey: sorry.

Jess: and yes.

(Jess opens the locker again. The scarecrow is still in front of her face, this time holding up strawberries. The scarecrow squishes them.)

Next scene: Federal bureau, Nicole walks out of a room holding a folder. Antonio approaches her. And they walk together

Antonio: Hey.

Nicole: Hey.

Antonio: called you last night.

Nicole: Yeah, I know. Sorry I was exhausted.

Antonio: you never return my phone calls.

(Nicole stops walking and Antonio stops right after her)

Nicole: It’s nothing, okay? I was tired.

Antonio: okay.

Nicole: but I’ll make it up to you.

(Nicole walks away)

Jess has a vision. She sees the female scarecrow. The scarecrow turns to the wall beside them where there are four clocks. All the hands on the clock turn to ten o’clock. The scarecrow deteriorates into dirt. The vision ends and everything goes back to normal.

Next scene: Jamie is researching Jess’s vision on the computer and Nicole and Jess are standing behind her.

Janey: I’m still not getting anything.

Jess: well did you include the ten o’clock.

Nicole: (affirmatively) and strawberries and dirt, nothing.

Janey: Maybe its one of those old bands from the sixties, the strawberry-ten-o’clock-dirt-field. Or not, what you guys pre-associate all the time.

Nicole: hang on, we haven’t tried that. Scarecrows stand in fields. Type field.

Janey: and we have something.

Jess: The Field Strawman Building. But it was demolished last October, they imploded it.

Janey: can’t be much left on site.

Nicole: you said October, the tenth month.

Jess: Yeah on the tenth day, at ten o’clock.

Nicole: Let’s check it out.

Next Scene: Nicole and Jess are at the construction site of the demolished building. There are bulldozers and machinery everywhere.

Nicole: any ideas?

(Jess once again sees the scarecrow. This time standing on a distant pile of rocks.)

Jess: over there.

(They walk toward it)

Head construction worker: May I help you?

Jess: FBI (shows her badge), excuse me; this area is under investigation please shut down the machines.

Head construction worker: (to the other workers) shut ‘em down gentlemen.

Jess: it’s here.

Nicole: okay.

(They start searching)

Jess: somewhere in this area.

Nicole: what’s this?

(She removes a rock to find a human skull lying under it.)

Nicole: a skull. Looks intact.

Jess: the scarecrow lead us here.

Nicole: she was protecting this piece of ground.

(Jess sees a bulldozer with two men on it).

Jess: hey! we said shut it down

Head construction worker: we are shut down.

Nicole: Jess what you see?

Jess: a bulldozer. There’s two guys on it. The guy on the side, I’ve seen him before I don’t know where.

Nicole: what about the driver?

(Jess sees the vision once again)

Jess: Him I know … its Pollock.

OPENING CREDITS

Antonio: Cranial incises suggest a Caucasian woman mid twenties about Janey’s build.

Janey: Yeah but I’m bulking up that’s why I’m in the gym all the time.

Jess: the rest of her was pulverized by the demolition.

(Janey looks over to Jess)

Janey: I want to build up to your size; it’d give me more presence.

Jess: what do you mean “my size”?

Janey: nothing, it’s a compliment.

Nicole: cause of death.

Antonio: lead poisoning. The bits of bone we found were from the sternum, the gladiolus section. I pulled some gun powder. Our Jane Doe was shot in the chest.

Nicole: when?

Janey: sedimentation shows a body dumped about 12 years ago.

Nicole: alright, Jess, let’s run a check on employees reported missing in the building at that time.

Janey: already done, everyone accounted for.

Nicole: DNA?

Antonio: Mitochondrial search was negative

Jess: Dental records?

Antonio: except for some braces she wore as a young girl, she had perfect teeth.

Janey: basically there’s not enough forensic evidence to go on.

Nicole: then it’s time to go to Pollock.

Antonio: what for?

Nicole: he was in Jess’s vision.

Antonio: You’re kidding.

Jess: you could say he was driving it.

(Nicole and Jess leave the room and walk towards Pollok’s office)

Jess: do I look bulky to you?

Nicole: you’re trippin’. Janey just isn’t long on tact, that’s all.

Jess: so I do look bulky?

Nicole: no

Jess: but, you would tell me if I did?

Nicole: yes. Give yourself a break Jess, her too.

(They reach Pollock’s office and overhear him yell “Janice listen to me, you want me to talk, I’m talking now but you don’t want to listen.” Nicole signals Jess to stop. Nicole mouths the word “no” to Jess and they start to walk away, but Pollock catches them.)

Pollock: what?

Jess: uh… we need your help on a homicide sir.

Pollock: great, I’m in a mood to commit one.

(They follow Pollock into the office)

Nicole: sir, Jess had a vision …

Pollock: you’re kidding, that was levity, but please, go on.

Nicole: you were in the vision,

Jess: driving a bulldozer.

Nicole: does that mean anything to you sir?

(Pollock pours himself a cup of water)

Pollock: perhaps I’d be happier if I got a trade?

Nicole: the vision led us to a human skull, young woman, cause of death gunshot.

Jess: DNA’s got nothing, dental records either; we’d like to get permission to go through your case files sir.

Pollock: because?

Nicole: perhaps there’s an unresolved case in your files.

Pollock: you’ll find very few unbroken cases in my background agent.

Nicole: sir?

Pollock: nothing. There’s nothing more that I would like to see other than something unresolved become resolved, you guys, you have my blessing.

Jess: thank you sir.

Nicole: thanks (Nicole looks at Pollock concerned).

Pollock: I’m good.

(They walk out as Pollock takes a sip of his water)

Next scene: Jess walks up to Antonio as he is trying to find something new about the woman.

Jess: hey.

Antonio: hey, this image of our Jane Doe is useless.

Jess: well then we need a better image.

Antonio: I’m gonna get one. I’m gonna order a 3-D reconstruction from the graphics unit. Where’s Nic?

Jess: one of Pollock’s old cases turned up a lead. You ever hear of Barry Frank Winterlove?

Antonio: the beltway butcher?

Jess: raped and killed half a dozen women.

Antonio: well to be more accurate he killed then raped them.

Jess: well he’s in maximum security in Greenville, Kentucky; Nic went to go see him.

Antonio: heh, so she just took off, just like that.

Jess: look, Antonio, she’s tired, she’s still coming of the Roderick Case and the woman died.

Antonio: Jess we worked together in Pheonix and I know what’s going on.

Jess: what’s going on?

Nicole: she’s shutting down. That’s what she does.

Next scene: Nicole goes to see Barry Frank Winterlove to see if he has anything to do with the death of the woman.

Barry: did you bring me any candy?

Nicole: so this body, it could be one of yours?

Barry: yes, absolutely, it’s a weakness.

Nicole: what is?

Barry: my sweet tooth. I-I-I especially like the hard-to-find stuff, peanut brittle, European chocolate drops, sponge toffee.

(Nicole takes a picture of a woman out of her Cased binder)

Nicole: take a look at this picture for me.

Barry: um … handsome woman.

Nicole: you kill her Barry?

Barry: hard to say. Uh wait; yeah oh, I recognize the birthmark on her neck. Yeah, yeah I killed her, chopped her up into little pieces, put them in wax paper, like what you put saltwater taffy in.

Nicole: you sure she’s one of yours?

Barry: get me out of here for a day, I’ll show you where I buried her things. I’m afraid I soiled them a little.

Nicole: that’s Anne Cumberland, Barry.

Barry: there are so many, I-I-I really should remember.

Nicole: No you shouldn’t. (Nicole grins a little) She’s the receptionist at our office, very much alive.

(Nicole gets up and starts to walk out of the room)

Barry: do-do-do you have any candy in there?

Nicole: as a matter of fact I do, chocolate truffles, but none for you Barry. (Nicole knocks on the door four times in order to be let out of the enclosed room) bye.

Next scene: Nicole returns to the Bureau, Where she meets Jess.

Jess: Hey how was your trip?

Nicole: waste of time, yours?

Jess: waste of time.

Pollock: So as a progress report, you could have saved yourselves a lot of money agent. Since I didn’t authorize a trip to Greenville I won’t be paying for any of your expenses. Pull the plug on this coldest of cold cases, please.

(Pollock starts walking and the two follow him)

Jess: but sir, I had visions all night.

Pollock: indigestion, perhaps a bit of underdone potato.

Jess: it led us to the remains of a human being. She deserves better than a Jay doe tae.

Pollock: we save lives, agent, we don’t resurrect them. This case is over.

Jess: but sir –

(They enter the room in which Antonio and Janey are in)

Pollock: Cortez, what is this I hear about you taking the liberty of a 3-D reconstruction?

(Pollock sees the 3-D model of the woman and is appalled)

Pollock: wow. That’s-that’s amazing.

Janey: this should get us a hit off the database.

Pollock: please don’t pursue the matter any more, Agent Cooper.

Nicole: sir, do you know this woman?

Pollock: Agent Scott and Mastriani, you are dismissed.

Jess: dismissed why?

Pollock: you’ve replaced

Nicole: by whom?

Pollock: by me. This is now my case.

(Pollock exits the room leaving everyone staring aimlessly)

Break to Commercial

(Nicole and Jess Follow Pollock out and try to regain control of the case)

Nicole: that statue, you know who she is.

Pollock: this is no longer your concern, agent.

Jess: my vision led us to her sir.

Pollock: tune to a new frequency starting now, I want your notes, that sculpture, every relevant paperclip on my desk by the time I return.

Nicole: sir--

Pollock: thank you (Pollock Leaves)

(Jess stares at the pictures in Pollock’s office)

Nicole: you see something?

Jess: yeah, you know that man in my vision, with Pollock on the bulldozer?

Nicole: yeah

Jess: well he’s right here.

Nicole: that’s Justice Stuart Langley, fourth circuit court of appeals. He’s also the reason Pollock made assistant director.

Next scene: Pollock visits the Langley house where he meets Justice Stuart Langley, Langley’s wife and someone else. Pollock walks up the front steps

Pollock: Janice

Janice: Hi

Pollock: Hey

Janice: you look like my husband.

Pollock: stop.

Janice: you sound like my husband. I thought locking you out of the house might get your attention.

Pollock: well it did, believe me it did. Unfortunately that’s uh… not why I’m here.

Janice: it isn’t

Pollock: no, I, came to see Stu

Janice: of course you did.

Pollock: listen I’ll come see you anywhere, anytime, you want. I mean, we should talk right?

Janice: yeah well that would be new.

Pollock: Listen Janice I don’t know what you want from me. I think I’ve been a good husband and a good father.

Janice: it’s not the father part I have a problem with, it’s the husband.

Pollock: listen will you be home later cause I—

(The front door slams and a woman walks out.)

Pollock: Marilyn, hi, how are you?

Marilyn Langley: Adequate, John. How are you?

Pollock: I’m fine, uh… thanks. Right now I need to see Stu.

Marilyn Langley: He’s in the living room, just go on in.

Pollock: Thanks. (He looks at Janice for a few seconds) I’ll uh…

(Pollock walks inside while the two women leave)

Justice Langley: Good to see you John. Just going over an article that might be of interest to you, search and seizure limitations of our federal law enforcement agencies.

Pollock: uh … sounds like single raw material, there Stu but I uh… have something more urgent.

Justice Langley: oh let’s here it.

Pollock: We found the remains of Audra Wheeling; she was killed and buried twelve years ago.

Justice Langley: that’s unfortunate. What’s that got to do with me?

Pollock: that’s what I’m here to find out.

Next scene: Back at the Bureau. Jess goes back to the room where the sculpture is. Jess sits down in front of the sculpture and barely gets a second to stare at it before she has a vision.

The woman in whom the sculpture portrays walks out to Jess. The woman sees the sculpture of herself and begins to talk to Jess.

Woman (Audra): (referring to the sculpture) it’s pretty good but I hate my hair like that. (Pause for dramatic effect) It’s going to happen again.

Jess: What is?

Woman (Audra): he’s gonna deal with another one.

Jess: who’s gonna deal with another one?

Woman (Audra): he can’t keep getting away with it.

Jess: is someone else going to die?

Woman (Audra): if you don’t stop it.

Jess: who?

(The woman says nothing)

Jess: okay, when?

Woman (Audra): very soon.

Jess: tell me your name.

Woman (Audra): they threw it away.

(The vision ends, Nicole is standing at the door puzzled)

Nicole: Jess?

(Jess just stands there, shaking, trying to recollect herself after that vision.)

Nicole: was it her?

Jess: (Jess nods quietly) she was here, looking at herself. Um… she said that um… that he was gonna deal with another one, soon.

Next scene: Pollock’s at Langley’s house discussing the Audra issue.

Justice Langley: do we have to discuss this now, in my home?

Pollock: well a body’s been found, there’s evidence of a crime. You had an affair with Audra about the same time the body was dropped. I need to know the truth.

Justice Langley: you know the truth.

Pollock: I know that she loved you so much she was gonna go to your wife.

Justice Langley: and I reached a settlement with her. As you also know I paid her twenty-five thousand dollars to go away. I suggested a long vacation, in Europe.

Pollock: and then she disappeared and when that missing person’s file came down the line, I wiped it, based on your word.

Justice Langley: John I never asked you to do that.

Pollock: We don’t have to ask each other for anything, do we Stu?

Justice Langley: I can rely on my friends and they can rely on me, you can.

Pollock: alright, so is there anything else?

Justice Langley: meaning?

Pollock: are you innocent Stu?

Justice Langley: in everyway. I’ve told you the truth.

Pollock: alright then.

Justice Langley: thank you. So what do you hear at the Bureau these days?

Pollock: the usual rumors, restructuring, rethinking.

Justice Langley: this time they’re true, but I’m in your corner John.

Pollock: thank you Stu. (Pollock shakes Langley’s hand). I appreciate it.

Justice Langley: no problem.

Pollock: I’ll see myself out.

(As Pollock leaves we see Justice Langley making a phone call that seems to be very important)

Next Scene: Back at the Bureau …

Antonio: (carrying out the statue) I’m gonna miss her.

Nicole: she needs a name.

Antonio: what you wanna give her a name?

Nicole: I wanna find out her real one.

Antonio: you heard Pollock, we’re off the case. This is going to his office.

Nicole: Jess’s visions say someone else is going to die. I believe it.

Antonio: someone’s gonna die? Alright what do you need?

Nicole: A name. Jess and I will do the rest.

Antonio: okay.

(Antonio walks off. Pollock is shown coming in to his office sitting down and making a phone call. The statue is in view behind him. The screen goes back to Antonio. He checks if the coast is clear and starts doing an image search for the dead woman. Janey approaches him from behind and startles him.)

Janey: are you disobeying a direct order sir?

Antonio: No. Pollock spoke to Jess and Nic so I’m disobeying an indirect order. You cool with that?

Janey: if you let me assist?

Antonio: you’re not worried about disobeying a direct order?

Janey: indirect order, once removed.

Antonio: you learn fast Cooper, you learn fast.

(Pollock is shown in his office looking at the statue and pondering different things. Then the camera is turned over to Antonio where he is calling over Jess and Nicole)

Antonio: Hey, Nic. This is Audra Wheeling of Bloomington, Minnesota. She was 24 years old at the time of her death.

Nicole: this is interesting. Audra worked for Justice Langley a year before she died. Last known residence, Greentree hotel.

Jess: Well there is no way she could afford a place like that on a clerk salary.

Nicole: Sounds like she had a sugar daddy.

Antonio: do you have somebody in mind?

Jess: well, if Audra was Justice Langley’s law clerk--

Antonio: --she could have been his mistress.

Nicole: when you factor in that Langley helped Pollock get his current job at the tender age of 37.

Jess: --the bulldozer in my vision could mean that Pollock’s trying to cover up the investigation.

Antonio: this could get real ugly.

Pollock: It already has. I believe that is for me.

(Nicole walks over and hands the file to Pollock)

Pollock: I ordered you not to proceed on this case.

Nicole: yes you did sir.

Pollock: WHY DID YOU?

Nicole: (assertively) I didn’t think you’d find out, sir.

Pollock: An honest answer at last. Thank you for that.

Jess: Sir, her name is Audra Wheeling, she worked for Justice Langley. She may have been his mistress.

Pollock: Great men sometimes have great weaknesses.

Nicole: and she was his?

Pollock: resolved with a biyot of twenty-five thousand dollars. Langley’s wrong-doing is moral not criminal. There will be no implication of a Federal Justice without true cause.

Jess: well, how are we supposed to establish true cause if you cover it up!

Pollock: WATCH YOURSELF MASTRIANI, ALL OF YOU! I SWEAR TO GOD, LAST WARNING. THIS IS MY CASE, HANDS OFF!

(Pollock walks out. At that very same time Janey walks in. Jess is steaming with anger.)

Jess: you told him, didn’t you?

Janey: told him what?

Jess: you’re Pollock’s spy!

Janey: I’m no one’s spy.

(Jess starts walking out but Nicole catches her)

Nicole: Jess, Jess, where are you going?

Jess: Well I’m not gonna let Pollock get away with this.

Nicole: well let me go, I’m better at confrontation.

Jess: no, I’m going, before I calm down.

(Nicole lets Jess go and Jess marches into Pollock’s office)

Pollock: you’re treading dangerous waters, agent.

Jess: as are you, sir.

Pollock: you got one shot, make it good.

Jess: you have to let us investigate this case.

Pollock: wow, that fell miserably short.

Jess: one murder as already been covered up.

Pollock: you’re gonna need facts to back up an accusation like that.

(Jess looks into the TV Pollock has in his office and gets a vision. She sees a poker table with a pair of hands on it. A queen of hearts is put down and of the hands points to it. Then a five of hearts is placed next to it on the table. Jess zooms out of the vision.)

Jess: you’re taking a chance, you’re gambling.

Pollock: FACTS, AGENT.

(Jess is back in the vision. A seven of hearts is placed next to the five of hearts. Another pair of hands moves the deck of cards to reveal an ace of spades and a king of spades. The shaded face of the dealer who moved the deck appears. The first pair of hands, which turn out to be Pollock’s, pulls the queen away from the five and the seven. The dealer pulls out a knife and stabs the queen of hearts. Then Pollock appears to be burying himself. The vision ends.)

Jess: If you cover up Audra’s murder for Justice Langley, you’ll be burying yourself.

Pollock: get out.

Break to commercial

Next scene: Janey is searching something on the computer.  This time Antonio startles her.

Antonio: what are you doing?

Janey: I uh… once I get on a roll it’s hard to stop.

Antonio: what if I was Pollock?

Janey: I’d be screwed.

Antonio: to put it mildly.

Janey: you will not be disappointed with what I’m finding sir, I promise.

Antonio: okay. Just be careful, watch your back.

Janey: yes sir.

Next scene: Jess and Nicole in another room in the Bureau.

Jess: Janey totally ratted us out.

Nicole: you do not know that. When did she have time? I mean look at this work, bank records, credit cards, internet purchases. She was way to busy to rat us out.

Jess: how long does it take to say “hey boss, go look in the bull pen”.

Nicole: Jess, if she did that, trust me, I would know.

Jess: okay, where is she now?

Nicole: following leads on Justice Langley. Look she knows what the consequences would be if Pollock catches her. She’s a team player. What do you got against her anyway?

Jess: she doesn’t like me.

Nicole: she’s your co-worker, not your friend.

Jess: she’s undermining me—

Nicole: with Pollock?—

Jess: WITH YOU!—

Nicole: She can’t. Jess you’re my partner and you’re my friend, what do you care what she does.

Jess: (sigh) okay, fine.

Nicole: good.

Jess: So, what else did she find?

Nicole: it’s what she didn’t find that’s interesting. No record of a twenty-five thousand dollar payment from Judge Langley.

Jess: Well, maybe he gave her the money and she never deposited it

Nicole: possibly,

Jess: or she was robbed and killed first.

Nicole: or she put it in an off sure account, or under a mattress.

Jess: none of this says the Judge broke any laws. Of course we still haven’t talked to his wife.

Nicole: true. (Sigh) What else was in your vision?

Jess: There was a card. A queen, it gave Pollock twenty-two.

Nicole: a losing hand in Black Jack.

Jess: in the vision, the dealer stabbed the card.

Nicole: Queen of hearts, twenty-two. Another young girl?

Jess: Another law clerk?

Nicole: you know if we were officially on this case we’d already be talking to the Langley’s.

Jess: do you think we should?

Nicole: I’m betting, someone already beat us to it.

Next scene: Pollock appears at the Langley house to gather more facts.

(Justice Langley opens the door for Pollock)

Pollock: hold this closure it’s the only way I can help you.

Justice Langley: I don’t need your help. There’s nothing to this.

Pollock: that would be ideal; the problem is I don’t believe you.

Justice Langley: come inside (Langley checks if the coast is clear and lets Pollock in)

Pollock: what’s going on Stu?

Justice Langley: Marilyn is gone.

Pollock: gone how? She-She left you?

Justice Langley: No. she didn’t come home last night.

Pollock: you’re telling me you think that someone’s abducted her?

Justice Langley: yeah

Pollock: well uh… where was she the last time you spoke to her?

Justice Langley: going to meet your wife.

Pollock: my wife?

(Pollock rushes out without even closing the door as he leaves. He drives home in a hurry in search of his wife. He gets out of his car.)

Pollock: Janice!

(Pollock bangs on his front door)

Pollock: Janice!

(He passes his backyard with his porch and his pool and keeps looking around until he reaches the garden.)

Pollock: Janice!

(Janice pops up from underneath the bushes)

Janice: Ow

Pollock: oh there, Janice, you alright?

Janice: I’m fine, it’s your fault but I’m fine.

Pollock: you should put something on that.

Janice: I said I’m fine

Pollock: why aren’t you answering your cell phone? I mean the whole point of having a cell phone is so that you can be accessible when I want to find you.

Janice: when you want to find me? Wow, thanks for clearing that up.

Pollock: Stop, cause you know that’s-that’s not what I meant.

Janice: You know let me clear something up. I don’t work for you, I won’t be ordered around and I will not be bullied. Okay?

Pollock: no you’re right. Listen I’m sorry, where-where are the kids?

Janice: Mondays and Wednesdays are fencing and swimming, Tuesdays and Thursdays are piano and martial arts. You wanna-

Pollock: Janice, I get it, I got it, I get it.

Janice: I’m-I’m gonna pick them up soon, do you wanna do it?

Pollock: I’m out of the house, won’t that confuse them.

Janice: I don’t think they’ll really notice until the weekend, which is the only time they really see you. Did you really come here because you’re concerned about me?

Pollock: I thought-I thought you may have been with Marilyn.

Janice: what’s wrong?

Pollock: well, Stu’s looking for her.

Janice: Stu doesn’t need you to look for his wife unless something’s wrong. She stood me up, she said she was gonna meet me. She called, said she was on her way and than she never showed.

Pollock: well did she say where she was going?

Janice: she was at the florist. She was ordering flowers for her benefit. What’s wrong?

Pollock: I um… you know I can’t say.

Janice: no, you won’t say.

Pollock: Janice you know I don’t like to bring this stuff home. I don’t like to talk about it.

Janice: which leaves me out of most of your life.

Pollock: I-I don’t want you to worry, you know that.

Janice: do you think the way you came in here isn’t worrying?

Pollock: that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to protect you from that part of my life, Janice. I’m trying to protect you from that part, from that part of …

Janice: of what John?

Pollock: of me, Janice okay? Yes, I’m sorry but listen I can’t-I can’t fix everything at once. Right now Marilyn might be in danger; I need the address of that florist. That’s all, please can I have that?

(Janice stares at him and then turns away)

Next scene: the rest of the team is trying to gather more info at the Bureau behind Pollock’s back

Janey: okay, as we know Audra’s last known address was at Greentree Hotel, now the rental checks were paid by a consulting firm known simply as “Sparrow”. Sparrow in term received steady payments from Stuart Langley at that time.

Jess: who names their consulting firm “Sparrow”?

(Pollock barges in unexpectedly)

Pollock: the full name is Benjamin Sparrow.

Janey: (to herself) I was supposed to watch my back.

Pollock: Continue. It will be last speech you make as an FBI agent, so I hope it’s good.

Nicole: sir…

Pollock: STOP! (He silences Nicole). Continue, former Agent Cooper.

(Janey opens the file in her hands)

Janey: Benjamin Sparrow, (she takes out a picture of a man out of the folder) this is him. 5’11’’, 170 pounds, black hair, dark eyes.

Pollock: that’s all you’ve got?

Janey: (nods slightly) yes sir.

Pollock: well you weren’t going to make much of an agent anyway.

Janey: does that mean I’m actually fired?

Pollock: if I get around to doing the paperwork. Right now, we have a new case, one that needs discretions. So if you could follow me.

(Everyone including Antonio who was also present in the room followed Pollock to his office. Jess is the last to follow Pollock out. Before she left she picked up the picture of Sparrow and realized that he was the dealer in her vision).

(Pollock is closing the shades in his office while talking to the rest of the agents)

Pollock: Marilyn Langley is missing. She was kidnapped in a flower shop yesterday. The florist says that she got into a car with a man that was taking her to her husband. She never showed.

Jess: sir, that has to be related to Audra Wheeling’s murder, it all the same case and Sparrow was in my vision.

Pollock: (to Janey) you with the short career, you mentioned payments.

(Pollock reclines into is chair)

Janey: there is documentation for a $25,000 deposit made twelve years ago into the account of Benjamin Sparrow by Stuart Langley.

Pollock: meaning?

Antonio: meaning Langley didn’t pay Audra the money directly.

Nicole: or it was payment to Sparrow to get rid of her.

Pollock: no that wouldn’t happen, not with Stu Langley.

Jess: we need to speak to Sparrow.

Pollock: now that is the tough part.

Jess: because?

Pollock: Benjamin Sparrow is legendary to some in this town and unknown among the less information privileged such as yourselves.

Nicole: inform us sir.

Pollock: Sparrow is a fixture to the wealthy and to the powerful he is also powerful in his own right due to the sensitive facts that he is privy to into the jobs that he has done. He knows where the bodies are buried.

Nicole: because he put them there.

Pollock: In some cases. Possibly. He has a reputation for being affective at dealing people with problems.

Jess: he was the dealer in my vision.

Antonio: let’s just hope he hasn’t dealt with Marilyn Langley.

Pollock: (to Antonio) you take Miss Disgrace here and track Benjamin Sparrow. If we are dealing with Sparrow then we have moved on to a new level, my friends, anything can happen. You two (to Nicole and Jess), will come with me.

(They follow Pollock out)

Break to Commercial

Next scene: Pollock, Nicole, and Jess are in front of the Langley house. Pollock ring the doorbell and quickly turns to his agents to tell them a word.

Pollock: Langley will be surprised when he opens his door so I need you guys to uh…

Nicole: sir, we got this.

Pollock: Thanks.

(Pollock rings the doorbell once more and Langley opens the door right away)

Justice Langley: John I’m sorry this is not a good time.

Pollock: These are Agents Scott, Mastriani. I have enlisted them because of the delicate nature of this investigation requires special skills. They seem to know how to break the rules and get away with it.

Justice Langley: John, look, please forgive me; I was so relieved I forgot to inform you. Her mother had an attack of angina and Marilyn rushed her to the hospital. I apologize; green fees are on me for a month.

Pollock: Stu, that makes Sparrow her attending physician.

(Justice Langley finally lets the three in. the sit down in his living room)

Pollock: I’m your friend Stu, I’m here to help.

Justice Langley: your agents, can I trust them?

Pollock: as much as you can trust me.

Justice Langley: well that can be taken two ways.

Pollock: they’re my people Stu. I rely on them, I trust them, they’re the best.

(Jess and Nicole look at each other pleased and flattered)

Justice Langley: my god, I’m a justice of a federal court. How did I get myself into this?

Pollock: People make mistakes, we all do.

Justice Langley: you have to make Audra’s case disappear, like it never existed.

Nicole: we can’t do that sir.

Justice Langley: you have to, to save my wife.

Pollock: walk us through that.

Justice Langley: I called Benjamin Sparrow after you first came to see me. I asked him if he killed Audra. He never said he did, but he wasn’t happy I was asking. And then Marilyn was gone.

Jess: what does he want, Justice Lanlgey?

Justice Langley: Just what I said, to make the case disappear.

Nicole: kill the investigation or he kills Marilyn.

Justice Langley: in short form, yes.

Pollock: why would he expect you to stay quiet after he returned your wife?

Justice Langley: I don’t know, but I trust him to kill her if I don’t do what he says.

Nicole: Judge, there’s something we could offer him that he might trade for Marilyn. Something that would guarantee is acquittal if it ever came to trial.

Justice Langley: for god’s sake, what?

Nicole: your taped confession. That you acted alone in killing Audra.

Justice Langley: that’s simply crazy (Langley leaps up from the chair in which he was sitting). Who is this woman John?

Nicole: it would work sir.

Justice Langley: he would hold it over me for the rest of my life.

Jess: he’s also about to kill your wife.

Pollock: I strongly suggest you consider it Stu.

Justice Langley: it would be made under duress against the threat of murder.

Nicole: yes sir, of no legal standing but he would feel like he had an insurance policy.

Justice Langley: alright, for Marilyn.

Pollock: alright. (To Nicole) Set it up.

(Justice Langley is now sitting in front of a camcorder and talking into it)

Justice Langley: My name is Stuart Langley, Federal Judge for the Fourth circuit Court of Appeals. This is a taped confession of the matter of the homicide of Audra Wheeling. Audra and I had an affair in 1993. when it came time to end it she threatened to tell my wife. For that I killed her and buried her remains. If this tape ever comes out I want one thing to be certain, Marilyn I’ve made mistakes but I’ve always loved you and I always will. I killed her because I was too afraid of losing you. Please forgive me.

Pollock: and now we wait

(Pollock shuts of the camcorder)

Next scene: Pollock is in a lounge-like room in the Bureau. He is banging on a coffee machine in order for it to work.

Pollock: come on, come out, come on

(He bangs upon the machine with frustration just as Nicole walks in.)

Nicole: you alright sir?

Pollock: always. Why-why do you ask?

Nicole: well with a case like this with an old friend, it’s bound to stir up some emotions.

Pollock: No time for emotions right now. (Pollock starts to walk away but then turns towards Nicole) Nothing stays the same agent.

Nicole: pardon me sir?

Pollock: I’m just saying, even when you think everything’s right, nothing stays the same.

Nicole: that’s true for all of us.

Pollock: you build structures in your mind; you try to keep everything in place you know in control.

Nicole: maybe those structures that you’re building, maybe they’re more like barriers

Pollock: I find it-I find it very constraining. Time, time wasted, time gone, time you can never get back, time you wish you made decisions you could change.

Nicole: you can’t change the past; you just gotta try to do the right thing in the present sir.

Pollock: that’s true. You’re right I mean the difficulty there is figuring out what the right thing is.

(A cell phone rings; both Nicole and Pollock turn around. It turns out to be Langley’s phone. Langley answers.)

Justice Langley: Benjamin, how is she. Tell me where.

Next scene: Nicole, Jess, Antonio and Langley are in another one of the rooms at the Bureau. Pollock is instructing them what to do during the exchange of the tape and Marilyn.

Pollock: the exchange is by the Brick Works on Forestville, six A.M. Justice Langley will be here (he says as he points to a map of the area on big screen), Sparrow could enter from one of these two areas.

Antonio: that’s good. We could have tackle units on three sides.

(Pollock turns to Antonio as well as the rest of the team)

Pollock: but we won’t. I’m keeping this whole operation off the books. There will be no additional resources beyond the volunteers in this room. If you do not want to go, that is fine. I can handle it myself.

Nicole: I have nothing else to do at six A.M. sir (Nicole says quite proudly).

Pollock: we stay behind cover after the exchange is complete. We move in not before you wait for my signal. This guy’s an ex-marine sniper scout, do not take him lightly.

Next scene: The team is at the exchange area on Forestville. Nicole is under a stabilized truck. Pollock is behind a big pile of crates and boxes. Antonio and Jess are behind two different buildings. Langley is in position as well.

Pollock: Everyone got their ears on?

Nicole: Scott in position.

Antonio: Cortez in position.

Jess: Mastriani in position.

Pollock: Keep an eye out for a car.

Nicole: Don’t think he’s driving one sir (she says as she sees a van pulling up towards the area).

(Langley approaches the vehicle while everyone makes sure they are completely hidden. Sparrow climbs out of his van. Jess sees the sign on the van and recognizes the three cards).

Jess: the sign on that bus is from my vision

(Sparrow walks toward Langley observing the area)

Antonio: target’s in the zone

Sparrow: good morning judge.

Justice Langley: I want to see my wife.

Sparrow: Mrs. Langley? I thought that she can wait on the bus.

Justice Langley: I need to know she’s alright.

(Langley starts to walk closer towards the van/bus but Sparrow pulls him back).

Sparrow: she’s very safe. I have a remote. This button (he presses one button on the remote), locks it from the outside. And this button (he pushes a second button), arms a very powerful bomb underneath the bus. If I hit it again the bus blows into a million pieces. Can we do business?

(Langley looks at the bus and then a close up of each agent comes to view. They are all nervous)

Break to Commercial

(Nicole looks through a pair of binoculars. She sees the two men)

Justice Langley: here’s the confession as promised, now let her go.

(Sparrow pulls out a camcorder from his pocket)

Sparrow: Well you don’t mind if I audition it, do you?

(Sparrow puts the tape into his camcorder)

Pollock: nobody move.

Antonio: that bus is wired, there had to be a receiver attached to the bomb.

Nicole: (while looking through her binoculars) So?

Antonio: So if I can get to it I’ll disarm it.

Nicole: we can’t take that chance.

Antonio: we take a bigger if we leave it hot.

(Antonio leaves his position in order to approach the bus without being seen. Antonio is soon under the bus looking for the wires. Sparrow continues to listen to the tape.)

Sparrow: very believable Justice Langley. (There is a pause) You seem very… skittish. We are alone here?

Justice Langley: why wouldn’t I be nervous? Let my wife go.

Sparrow: No, not yet. Up against the car.

(Sparrow starts to check Langley)

Sparrow: I’m gonna search you.

Justice Langley: I don’t have a gun.

Sparrow: a gun doesn’t worry me.

Pollock: (as he pulls out his gun) He’s going for the wire.

(Sparrow detects the wire and pulls it)

Sparrow: you disappoint me Stuart.

(Sparrow pushes Langley to the ground. Pollock comes out of his hiding spot and fires one shot in Sparrows direction. Sparrow shoots multiple shots with a larger gun toward Pollock but he is too quick and is able to take cover. Then Nicole fires one shot towards Sparrow and he uses his large gun in Nicole’s direction. She too is able to conceal herself.)

Nicole: Keep him covered Jess.

(Jess signals Langley to stop and stay. Then she has a recap of her vision. She sees the poker table and the dealer stabbing the queen).

Jess: Sparrow stabbed the queen. Antonio, the queen on the side of the bus.

(Antonio gets out from under the bus and heads towards its side. He opens up a compartment beneath the queen of hearts card and finds the wires)

Nicole: on the count of three sir, he can’t shoot both of us.

Pollock: My mess agent I got it.

(Antonio disables the bomb by cutting off the wire right before Sparrow was about to hit the button on the remote. Pollock get up and shoots Sparrow. Sparrow falls to the ground, looking dead or perhaps severely injured. Nicole approaches him. Langley gets up and Jess comes closer. Pollock throws the remote to Antonio in order for him to unlock the bus. Then Pollock takes the tape out of Sparrow’s pocket.)

Nicole: I’ll get the paramedics.

Pollock: Just go home agent, I’ll clean it.

Jess: but sir-

Pollock: -it didn’t happen. It’s all off the books.

(Langley is reunited with his wife Marilyn. They greet each other with hugs and kisses)

Next scene: Back at the Bureau the case it being wrapped up.

Justice Langley: this has been a brutal few days John.

Pollock: for all of us.

Justice Langley: I told Marilyn about Audra, finally.

Pollock: and?

Justice Langley: and she’s not gonna make any trouble for me.

Pollock: how fortunate for you.

Justice Langley: I’m a fortunate man John. I’m surrounded by people I can rely on. People like you.

Pollock: like I used to be.

Justice Langley: excuse me?

Pollock: we helped cover up a murder.

Justice Langley: I had no knowledge about Sparrow’s actions prior to or after the fact.

Pollock: I made a case disappear, that I should have investigated.

Justice Langley: that’s on you John, not on me (there is a pause). This is the report I filed. It details how you hired Benjamin Sparrow to pay off your mistress. Sparrow killed her instead. So you’re not guilty of murder Stu but you’re in the chain.

Justice Langley: and you have officially filed this?

Pollock: we’re gonna keep the lid on it for a week.

Justice Langley: so?

Pollock: so you could come forward on your own. Stu I bought you a week, I owe you that much.

Justice Langley: you owe me much more.

Pollock: I’m not responsible to you, Stu, I’m not. (He looks out of his office window and sees two elderly people standing with Nicole) I’m responsible to them, Stu, Audra’s parents.

Justice Langley: look, with Sparrow dead the jury will never reach a finding.

Pollock: I know that.

Justice Langley: but if this goes public, I’ll never see the Supreme Court.

Pollock: I know that too, Stu.

Justice Langley: I have friends who will be disappointed John, very disappointed.

Pollock: I’m gonna have to take my chances on that Stu. You can’t have everything.

(Pollock leaves his office with Langley still in there staring at the file with sorrow. Jess approaches Pollock.)

Jess: Hey, how are you sir?

Pollock: I’m fine Mastriani.

(The two start walking, Jess slightly behind Pollock)

Jess: I heard that you filed a report on Langley.

Pollock: yes I did.

Jess: well I just wanted you to know that I’m proud of you sir.

Pollock: you’re proud of me?

Jess: (starting to smile) well you did the right thing in a tough situation and, it makes me proud of my boss.

Pollock: well I um, thank you.

(He starts to walk away but Jess manages to stop him)

Jess: so at Langley’s house when you said you trusted us and relied on us…

Pollock: yes, well of course, it was critical that I got him to confide in us at that point so…

Jess: I see

(Jess is about to turn around and walk away but Pollock finishes what he was saying)

Pollock: luckily, I was able to give the ring of truth.

Jess: thank you. (They look directly at each other) good night.

Pollock: good night.

(Jess walks away. Pollock continues in his direction. Nicole is seen finishing up her talk with the Wheelings.)

Nicole: I wish we had happier news about your daughter

Mr. Wheeling: yeah well, it’s what we always feared. All these years we wanted to sell the house, get on with our lives, but we couldn’t.

Mrs. Wheeling: we kept the same phone number.

Mr. Wheeling: praying that she would come home, try to phone us.

Mrs. Wheeling: not knowing was the hardest part.

Mr. Wheeling: I don’t know, I think knowing might be harder.

(The elevator arrives and the Wheelings step into it. Ironically Justice Langley happens to enter the elevator right after them. Nicole starts to walk away from the elevator and she meets Antonio.)

Nicole: Hey

Antonio: Hey

Nicole: Let’s go home.

Antonio: Home? Whose home?

Nicole: either one, I just don’t want to be alone tonight.

Antonio: Cool. This used to be the sort of thing that made you want to be alone.

Nicole: I know. It used to be. Nothing stays the same.

(The two of them walk off together. Pollock is shown sitting in his office drinking his coffee. He takes time to pace around his office and just think. After a while he picks up his phone and dials a number. The phone rings and on the other end you can see the hand of a woman reaching for her phone to check who’s calling. She sets the phone on the counter. The phone keeps ringing and the woman who is revealed as Janice walks away. The phone rings on last time.)
