Qinaq and her mate watch from a distance.] Qinaq mate: She’s very beautiful. Qinaq: It is a pity she must die. [Veronica stops abruptly; an old woman is in front of her blocking the trail.] Old Woman: You look just like your mother. Veronica: Who are you? You know my parents? Old Woman: If this belongs to you I am a friend. [The old woman holds out a lock of blonde hair. Veronica takes it.] Veronica: Where did you get this? Old Woman: From your mother; she kept it wrapped in a royal blue ribbon. Veronica: My mother? You’ve seen my parents? Old Woman: Just a few days ago. Veronica: You did? Where are they? Old Woman: The day your parents left you they wandered into a place called El Dorado. Veronica: My father told me El Dorado doesn’t exist. Old Woman: Your father discovered he was wrong. Veronica: Are they okay? Old Woman: They are both in the best of health. And they miss their daughter every day. Would you like to see them? Veronica: More than anything. Old Woman: Before I tell you how to find them you must swear to go alone and tell no one where you are going. Veronica: Yes I promise, I won’t tell anyone. Old Woman: The gateway to El Dorado is in the south face of the great mountain. There is a hidden door. The key to open it will present itself, but you must hurry. Veronica: All right. I’ll go right away. Will you take me there? Old Woman: Tell no one about this. [The old woman disappears before Veronica’s eyes.] [Scene: A cave – A man appears] Shape shifter: I have found her my prince. Apep: Are you sure? Shape shifter: Skin bronzed by the sun; hair the color of gold. Apep: A virgin? Only a virgin can free me. Shape shifter: She is the one the legend speaks of. I am certain. Apep: Enough – we will see. Bring her to me. Shape shifter: Yes my prince. Apep: I have waited three hundred years for this. Does my, would be, savior have a name? Shape shifter: They call her Veronica. Qinaq pulls a sword while her mate grabs Veronica from behind. They bind Veronica’s hands.] Veronica: Who are you? What do you want? Why are you doing this? [Scene: The treehouse. Roxton and Challenger are standing on the balcony having tea. Malone is at the table writing in his journals.] Challenger: Another beautiful day in paradise. Roxton: Ah huh looks that way from here. Malone: One day we might even remember it this way if we ever get back to London. Marguerite: Has anyone seen Veronica this morning? [Scene: The trail – Veronica is on the ground she has her hands bound behind her back and has a gag around her mouth. She has a rock and is slowly cutting the ropes while Qinaq and her mate talk.] Qinaq: It has to be. [Veronica hands are now free.] Qinaq’s mate: I’ll do it. [Qinaq’s mate walks over to Veronica with a knife.] Forgive me. [He starts the motion to plunge the knife into Veronica’s gut when Veronica swings her arm and punches him, knocking him out. Veronica and Qinaq fight. Veronica knocks Qinaq out. She grabs her knives which are lying nearby and runs toward the treehouse.] [Scene: The treehouse – everyone is at the table eating breakfast.] Roxton: It’s not like Veronica to miss breakfast. Malone: Maybe we should go look for her. [Veronica comes up in the elevator.] Veronica: Mmmm looks good. What’d I miss? Challenger: Just about everything. Malone: Let me fix you a plate. Veronica: No its okay don’t worry about me. Roxton: Seems very cheerful. Marguerite: Even for her. [Veronica goes to her bedroom and opens her jewelry box. She finds a royal blue ribbon. Malone enters her room.] Malone: Are you all right? Veronica: I think I know where my parents went. Malone: What? Veronica: It never occurred to me until this morning. Malone: Where do you think they are? Veronica: You don’t know the place but I suddenly remembered something my father said and I’m going to go take a look. Malone: Now? Veronica: Why not? [Veronica enters the common room.] Challenger: Take Malone with you or Roxton at least. Roxton: Ready at your service. Veronica: Thanks but it really isn’t necessary. I’m not going very far. Challenger: Why do you have to go alone? You know the dangers better than any of us. Veronica: Yes I do. Don’t worry I’ll be perfectly safe. Marguerite: What’s the big secret? Veronica: No secret; I’m going to find my parents, I hope. Wish me luck. [She goes to the elevator.] Malone: Wait for me. [Scene: The base of the treehouse. Qinaq’s mate touches the electric fence, shocking himself. Veronica and Malone are walking.] Malone: Let me come with you. Veronica: No you have to stay here. Malone: Why, I don’t understand? Veronica: Just stay here and don’t follow me. Malone: Why? I can’t let you go by yourself. [Veronica kisses Malone then punches him unconscious. Veronica hears the elevator descending and runs off. Marguerite and Roxton see Malone on the ground.] Roxton: Well done Malone. Malone: She caught me by surprise. Marguerite: I hope so. Malone: I think she’s in some sort of trouble. Marguerite: Why what did she say? Malone: Nothing but before she hit me she… Roxton: She what? Malone: She kissed me like she was trying to say goodbye or something. [Roxton yells up to the balcony.] Roxton: Any sign of her Challenger? [Challenger is looking through the telescope.] Challenger: I can’t see her anywhere [Scene: Veronica is walking the trail to the mountain. A raptor jumps from the jungle. Veronica gets in position to fight it. The Shape shifter appears and throws his blade hitting the raptor in the neck.] Shape shifter: Sorry I took a little longer than expected. Are you all right? Veronica: Fine, who are you? Shape shifter: You know me better as a little old lady, I think. Veronica: What? Shape shifter: She’s a sweet old thing but not much good in a fight. Veronica: You and her are the same person. Shape shifter: Messanger and friend. Your parents are waiting, come. Veronica: You’ve seen my parents again? Shape shifter: They can’t wait to see you. [The Shape shifter takes her hand and leads her into the jungle.] [Scene: Roxton, Malone, Marguerite and Challenger are following Veronica’s trail.] Marguerite: How do we even know this is Veronica’s trail? Broken twigs kicked stones we could be following a dinosaur for all we know. Malone: You didn’t have to help Marguerite. Marguerite: Do we even know for sure that she’s in trouble maybe she just wants to spend some time alone. Okay now which way? Malone: That way [pointing in a direction]. Marguerite: How do you know? Malone: Because that way [pointing in opposite direction] leads back toward the treehouse. Roxton: Maybe that’s the point lead us in a circle then double back. Malone: Maybe but…maybe not. Challenger: I guess we better split up. Marguerite: I’ll go this way [pointing the way back to the treehouse.] Don’t worry if she’s not there when I get back to the treehouse I won’t stop. Roxton: If we pick up her trail we’ll send a smoke signal. [He goes with Marguerite.] Challenger: We’ll do the same thing. [Scene: The trail to the mountain. The Shape shifter stops when he hears a noise.] Veronica: What is it? Shape shifter: Ambush. [Qinaq’s mate jumps from the bushes and attacks the Shape shifter; they fight. The Shape shifter runs his knife through Qinaq’s mate. Qinaq jumps forward. The Shape shifter hits her.] Qinaq: Whatever he says, don’t listen to him. He’s lying. Shape shifter: Go! Your parents are waiting! [Veronica runs off. Qinaq runs off in the opposite direction.] [Scene: Malone and Challenger following the trail.] Malone: You hear that? [Qinaq stumbles into their path.] Qinaq: Thank God you tried to follow her. You have to help. Challenger: Who are you? Qinaq: It doesn’t matter. Your friend has been deceived. Malone: What friend is that? Qinaq: The one who kissed you goodbye. Three hundred years ago a giant and his minion were sealed inside the great mountain. Malone: A giant? Qinaq: Yes, your friend is the only one who can release him. Challenger: Why her? Qinaq: Because it is written in the great oracle. A maiden from another world will come and she will free him and he will glory in his savage vengeance. Malone: Veronica was born right here. Qinaq: But her parents came from far away; just like yourselves. The last time he was free he slaughtered thousands. This time it will be much worse. I have to stop her. Challenger: No…no…no. You’ve had a very bad bump on your head, you better rest. Malone: I’ll go find Veronica. Qinaq: Hurry please. [Scene: Veronica has arrived at the base of the mountain. Malone catches up with her.] Malone: Veronica wait! Veronica: I told you not to follow me. Malone: Who told you this is where your parents are? Veronica: A messenger. She had proof! Malone: What kind of proof? I just want to talk about it. What if you’re wrong? What if you’ve been tricked? [Veronica turns to leave Malone grabs her arm.] Please! [The Shape shifter appears.] Shape shifter: Let her go! [The Shape shifter butts heads with Malone knocking the journalist to the ground.] I’ll put him somewhere safe. [Veronica kneels down to Malone.] Veronica: Oh your poor head. I’ll miss you. Shape shifter: Hurry! He won’t be out for long. [Veronica goes to the wall of the mountain. A reflection of a blond woman appears on the wall. They both reach out to each other. A doorway appears on the mountain wall; it opens. Veronica walks into the cave.] [Fade out] [Scene: The cave] Veronica: Hello? Is anybody here? [Apep comes forward.] Who are you? Apep: I’m prince Apep sealed in this tomb by evil magicians. For three hundred years I have waited and dreamt of your touch. Veronica: What are you talking about? Apep: Only you can save me from eternal darkness; you my future queen. Veronica: I don’t understand? Where is El Dorado? And where are my parents? [Scene: The trail.] Marguerite: Back and forth across this damn jungle; Veronica better have a good explanation for all this. [Roxton and Marguerite come across Challenger and Qinaq next to a grave.] Marguerite: What’s going on? Roxton: And where’s Veronica and Malone? Marguerite: Who’s under the rocks? Roxton: And who the hell is this? Challenger: She and her mate were trying to stop Veronica. She says her mate was killed by a Shape shifter. Marguerite: Shape shifter? Qinaq: No it can’t be. [Malone runs from the bush toward the group.] Roxton: Malone? Malone: I couldn’t stop her. Qinaq: No it can’t happen again! Challenger: Wait Qinaq where are you going? Malone: Forget about her. We’ve got to find Veronica. Challenger: What, you’ve seen her? Malone: Yeah, just before some guy with a long curved sword and a head like a hammer knocked me senseless. Challenger: The giant’s minion? Roxton: Giant? Challenger: According to Qinaq a giant and a shape shifting minion have been locked in a mountain for three hundred years. Malone: And Veronica is the only one who can set him free. [Scene: Outside the cave – A white horse is standing outside. Apep smells the air.] Veronica: The messenger said this was the gateway to El Dorado. Apep: I’m the gateway to El Dorado; the prince and heir to the throne. And you are to be my queen. Veronica: I’m not your queen. But I am looking for my parents. Apep: And you will find them. When you return with me to the golden city your parents will be waiting. Veronica: Prove it. Apep: The only way for me to prove it is to take you there. Veronica: How far is it? Apep: Not far. [Veronica mounts the white horse.] Veronica: Are you sure my parents are really there? Apep: Yes I swear; with all my heart. [Scene: The trail] Marguerite: Now if Veronica let a giant out of these mountains don’t you think we would’ve seen it by now? Roxton: Are you saying here is no giant? Malone: There she is. [They spot Veronica with Apep.] Marguerite: Well hello prince charming. Malone: Veronica! [They approach the two.] What happened are you all right? Veronica: I’ve never been better. This is Prince Apep he’s going to take me to see my parents. Marguerite: I thought you were supposed to be a giant? Apep: That is the story told by the ones who imprisoned me. But as you can see I’m just a man. Malone: Where are your parents? Veronica: They’re in El Dorado. Roxton: There’s no such place. Challenger: It’s just a legend. Apep: El Dorado is as secret to the outside world as this plateau. Marguerite: A lost world within a lost world; sounds terrifying. Apep: Its paradise and no one who lives there, ever wants to leave. Malone: And you’re going there right now? Challenger: Can we come with you? Apep: Unfortunately we must go alone. Roxton: Why is that? Apep: Those who know the way cannot return. That’s how the secret is preserved. Veronica: Once I find my parents I’ll send for you if you want. Malone: You’re leaving…forever? Marguerite: Are you sure about this? [Veronica gives Marguerite a hug and a pouch. She gives Roxton a hug.] Roxton: I think you should reconsider. Veronica: I’ve waited eleven years for this. [Veronica gives Challenger a hug.] Challenger: Try to find some way to keep in touch. Veronica: I never thought I would be the one leaving. I have to find my parents, just like you have to find your way back home. Malone: Maybe I’ll drop that and follow you. [Veronica gives Malone a hug. She leaves on her white horse, Apep walking beside her.] Marguerite: Ah a prince and a city of gold. Where did I go wrong? Roxton: Misplaced values? [Scene: Veronica and Apep stop by an entrance to a cave.] Veronica: Why are we stopping here? Apep: El Dorado is a full day’s ride from here. Our friend needs some rest. [Talking to horse] Relax but don’t go far. [To Veronica] Come…I have something I want to show you. [Apep leads Veronica inside to what is his lair.] Just as I left it. Veronica: Three hundred years ago? Apep: Our friend outside’s been looking after things. [The horse turns into the Shape shifter.] You see I’m immortal a descendent of the gods. And I shall rule El Dorado for eternity. Our time together may be brief Veronica, but it shall sparkle with more brilliance than all the stars in the midnight sky. And through our children you too shall live forever. Veronica: Children? Apep: Beautiful children; yours and mine. [Apep kisses Veronica.] [Scene: Nightime the treehouse.] Malone: Qinaq said there was a giant. Why would she lie? Marguerite: Apparently to keep a handsome prince locked up. It could be that she and her dead partner are the bad guys. Challenger: I don’t believe it. Marguerite: Then why did she run? Roxton: We should have gone after her. I’m with you two; I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Marguerite: Men – she has fallen in love. You can’t protect the little girl forever. [Scene: Apep’s lair. Apep has Veronica in his arms and is carrying her to his bed.] Apep: Don’t be afraid just close your eyes. Veronica: I can’t. Apep: Yes you can. [He sets her down on the bed.] Veronica: But I don’t even know you. Apep: I am your prince. [He kisses her she struggles.] Veronica: No Apep: Don’t you see what I’m offering? Veronica: You said you would take me to my parents. Apep: And I will. But why deny your feelings? [Veronica turns her back to Apep] Are you refusing me? Veronica: Are you lying to me? Apep: Haven’t I been kind to you? [He lurches toward her. She jumps off the bed and pulls her knife.] [Fade Out] [Scene: Apep’s lair.] Apep: What is this? You dare pull a knife on me? [Apep grows into a giant.] You could have been my queen, now you must die. [Veronica runs out of the lair.] I will not be scorned. [Veronica runs past the Shape shifter. He goes into the lair.] Shape shifter: What happened? Apep: Whatta you thing, she’s escaped. Find her. [The Shape shifter runs to find Veronica.] [Scene: Morning the treehouse. The men are getting their weapons ready.] Marguerite: Where are you going? Roxton: We don’t know exactly. We’re hoping to pick up their trail. Marguerite: And follow them to El Dorado? Challenger: I wouldn’t mind a glimpse of that fabled city. Roxton: If that’s where their going. Malone: He’s not, that guy was lying. Roxton: Male intuition. [Veronica comes up in the elevator.] Marguerite: Veronica? Veronica: Lies everything…lies. He got so ugly. Challenger: You mean he turned into monster? Veronica: Right after I made it clear I wasn’t going to sleep with him. Malone: That son of a bitch. Marguerite: Typical, not a wonder you had to walk home. Malone: Are you saying he actually grew into some sort of giant? Veronica: Bigger than a T-Rex. Challenger: Qinaq she was right. Roxton: Where is he? Veronica: I don’t know he didn’t follow me. But he’s got a friend. Challenger: The Shape shifter. Marguerite: Which means he could be anywhere at any time. Challenger: Qinaq would know how to stop the giant. Malone: That’s right she would remember from the last time, we have to find her. Marguerite: Lead the way. Veronica: There’s a ruined village not to far from here, we better get moving. Roxton: Maybe we should all go. Challenger: No wait, somebody has to defend the treehouse. Veronica: We’ll only be gone a couple of hours. Roxton: You’ve got three hours before we come looking. Marguerite: Make it two and a half. [Veronica, Marguerite and Malone descend in the elevator.] Roxton: All right Challenger what’s your plan? The perimeter fence won’t stop him; he’ll step right over it. Challenger: I was thinking of something a little closer to home. [Scene: The ruined city.] Malone: Looks pretty deserted. Veronica: Qinaq are you here? Marguerite: You know yelling might not be such a good idea the giant might be closer than we think. Qinaq: You learned the truth and he didn’t kill you. Veronica: He tried to, just like you. Qinaq: We had no choice. Veronica: You could have told me what was really going on. Qinaq: Would you have believed us. For the rest of you life you would have been tempted to look behind that door; just to see if your parents were there or not. Marguerite: The question is do you know how to stop this monster? Qinaq: Yes. This plant it has a poison in it that will poison him for a couple of hours. Marguerite: It won’t kill him? Qinaq: Nothing will kill him. But if we get enough poison into his body maybe we can get him back to the mountain before it wears off. Marguerite: That’s your plan? Haul a giant back to a mountain! Veronica: We better get started. [Scene: The treehouse – Roxton and Challenger are running coils along the balcony.] Challenger: This should slow him down. Roxton: At least until he figures out it’s all connected to the windmill. Challenger: Let’s hope that’s long enough. [Scene: The ruined city.] Qinaq: I know what the giant said, about your parents. Veronica: He told me they were in El Dorado. But now I know there is no such place. Qinaq: But there is. This…this was once the golden city. Veronica: This? What happened to it? Qinaq: Three hundred years ago the queen was seduced by a demon and a giant was born. When he grew to be a man the people refused to accept him as their king. And in his anger he destroyed the city. But after he was captured El Dorado was moved to a secret place. Not even the giant knows where it is. It is possible your parents found it. Veronica: But how can that be? Wouldn’t you know for sure? Qinaq: I have not been to El Dorado in many years. My purpose is to guard the dungeon. But when this is over I will take you there. We can search for your parents together. [Scene: The treehouse - Challenger flips the electric fence switch on.] Challenger: Care to test it? [Apep is walking toward the treehouse.] Roxton: Sounds like you may have a volunteer. Perhaps a bullet or two will slow him down. [Apep gets to the electric fence and his ankle is shocked. He bends down to take a look at the fence.] Apep: Oh…what evil device is this? [He stands up and walks right over it. He stands at the base of the treehouse.] Throw down Veronica! [Challenger and Roxton fire a few shots hitting Apep in the chest; it has no effect on him.] Challenger: We’re going to run out of ammunition before we stop this behemoth. [Roxton grabs his Webleys and gives one a quick kiss for luck. They fire more rounds at Apep.] Apep: Ready or not. Roxton: What’s next in the arsenal? [Apep begins to climb the trunk of the tree. Things start to rattle inside the treehouse. Challenger and Roxton are reloading their weapons.] Here he comes. [Apep head appears outside the balcony.] Apep: Nice place. Hope I’m not intruding. [Apep tries to grab Challenger and Roxton but his arm is shocked by the coils rigged on the balcony. Apep falls to the ground. The Shape shifter appears beside Apep.] Shape shifter: She isn’t here. Apep: What! Shape shifter: She must have slipped out when I came to get you. [Apep stares angrily up at Roxton and Challenger.] Apep: I’ll be back for you! Challenger: The minion must know where Veronica is. [Scene: The trail] Marguerite: Did you hear something? [Marguerite, Veronica, Malone and Qinaq step into a clearing and see Apep coming their way.] Veronica: Run! [Apep bends down to grab Veronica but Malone grabs her out of the way. Apep gets a hold of Marguerite instead.] Marguerite: Put me down! Apep: You’re not Veronica. Marguerite: And you’re no prince! Apep: Beg for your life. [Fade Out] [Apep is squeezing Marguerite] Apep: Oh…tell me when it starts to hurt? Marguerite: What kind of a sick degenerate are you? Apep: A very hungry one. [Marguerite pulls her gun and points it at Apep.] Is that the best you can do? Marguerite: Open your mouth I’ll blow your tonsils off. Apep: At last a woman with a sense of humor. Marguerite: Oh you think that was funny? This should be hilarious. [Marguerite gets ready to fire but Apep takes his finger and flicks the gun from her hand.] Apep: For that I’ll have to bite your head off. [Apep gets ready to take a bite but Malone shoots his foot, Veronica kicks his foot and Qinaq hits him with her sword. Apep hits Veronica with his knee sending her to the ground. Malone keeps firing. Qinaq stabs him with her sword. Apep swings and sends Qinaq flying. He steps on Qinaq killing her. The Shape shifter appears.] Apep: Find her! [Veronica and Malone take off running. Apep still has Marguerite in his grasp.] Apep: For now, I’ll just amuse myself with you. [Apep leaves to go back to his lair. Veronica and Malone run to Qinaq. Challenger and Roxton appear from the bush. Roxton spots Veronica and Malone.] Roxton: There [Challenger and Roxton run to the group.] What’s happened? Veronica: She’s dead [Roxton sees who it is.] Roxton: Oh thank God. Well…I mean where’s Marguerite? Malone: The giant took her. Roxton: What? Veronica: We’re wasting time; we have to get these plants back to the treehouse and extract the poison. [Scene: Apep’s lair - he is still a giant.] Marguerite: Well thanks for the lift. Apep: Change of clothes. You night find something suitable in there. Marguerite: What a beautiful bed, pity you’ll be sleeping on the floor. Apep: That isn’t very funny. Marguerite: I think it is and a man as big and tough as you should be able to laugh a little at himself. Apep: Well the next thing you say better – be – hilarious. Marguerite: Quit – making – threats. How can you laugh when you’re so angry all the time? No wonder they locked you up for three hundred years. [Scene: The treehouse – The group are working at getting the poison sap from the plants and putting together the blow guns.] Challenger: Strychnosis Toxifera an excellent source of Curare. It’s a fast acting drug that relaxes the muscles to the point of paralysis within seconds. Roxton: Too bad it wears off. It’s going to take a lucky shot; a vein in the neck or the back of the thigh. [Roxton hands the blow gun to Veronica.] Here try it. Veronica: I’m aiming for his eyes. Challenger: The eyes…yes that’s ideal. The more poison we get into him the faster he’ll fall. Malone: That giant doesn’t stand a chance. [Scene: Apep’s lair Marguerite appears from behind the curtain dressed in a red harem outfit.] Marguerite: I’m here to entertain and make you laugh. How do I look? Apep: Tiny Marguerite: Why don’t you come down to my size and see how perfect tiny can be. Apep: You’re a lot more fun than the other one. That’s for sure. Marguerite: Virgins are highly overrated. [Marguerite notices the fire in the fireplace is casting their shadows on the far wall.] You know when I saw you the other day you looked so handsome. I thought to myself some girls get all the luck; such strength - such beauty. I wanted to be the one to hold you, caress you, make you forget about the horrors of your life. Apep: That would be nice. Marguerite: Well, what can a woman of perfectly normal proportions do? We could have been lovers. Can you feel it? Can you image just how delicious that would be? [Scene: Nighttime the trail to Apep’s lair] Roxton: God help him if he’s laid a hand on Marguerite. Veronica, are you sure about this cave? Veronica: I don’t know where else to look. [Scene: Apep’s lair.] Marguerite: Look at you; mountain of a man totally useless. Apep: You think if I were small like you, you could out smart me maybe even kill me. Marguerite: No I thought you were immortal Apep: I am. Marguerite: Then what are you afraid of. Apep: You would be the mother of my children? Marguerite: Mother to a brood of monsters? Who could say no to that? You know I’ve always imagined myself more courtesan then mother. But what the hell, how bad can it be? Monster children could be fun. I’m ready when you are. [Apep shrinks to normal size.] [Scene: Outside Apep’s Lair – The group see the Shape shifter guarding the entrance.] Malone: My old friend. Veronica: That’s the cave behind him. Roxton: What are we going to do about him? Veronica: He’s mine. You deal with the giant. [Veronica leaves the men.] Malone: Veronica, wait! Roxton: Malone no; the giant first. [Veronica runs past the Shape shifter he sees her and disappears, leaving the entrance unguarded. The men run to the entrance.] Challenger: We’ll probably only get one shot at this, so make every dart count. Roxton: Ready? [They enter the cave. [Veronica pulls her knifes from behind her back and throws them. They hit the old woman, she falls to the ground.] Malone: Is it dead? Veronica: Don’t know. [Scene: Morning the trail to the mountain – They have Apep tied up on a stretcher.] Challenger: You moved that slab of rock with your finger? That must weigh a thousand tons. Roxton: I just hope you can get it closed again. Come on. Challenger: One – two – three. [They are in the cave.] Right just bring him around now. Down now.
