Veronica is standing behind him.] Challenger: Is……any…body……watch…ing? Veronica: Doesn’t look like it. Challenger: They were supposed to signal half an hour ago. Veronica: Do you think they made it to the signal point? [Scene: The jungle – Malone is up in a tree with a signal mirror. Marguerite and Roxton are on the ground. Roxton is jotting down the Morse code.] Malone: I see them. Roxton: Well what are they saying? Malone: Take this down - dot dot dash…ah no…dash dash dot dash dash dot dash dot dot dot. Marguerite: It’s a comfort to know anytime I want to call home all I have to do is climb a tree. Roxton: Quiet Marguerite. Marguerite: Sorry, didn’t know I was funding an expedition of Boy Scouts. Do you do smoke signals too? Roxton: Only if I don’t have my drums handy. Is that it? Malone: That’s it. These mirrors are going to be a life saver. Marguerite: Absolutely. Malone: What’s the message say? Roxton: Haven’t got a clue; ask them to repeat. Malone: Roger. [Roxton stops and grabs his rifle, hearing a noise in the jungle.] Marguerite: Raptors? Roxton: Malone, see anything from up there? Malone: No why? Roxton: There’s something in the bushes. [A horse (Grendel) appears with no rider approaches.] Malone: A horse. Roxton: A horse? Marguerite: My kingdom for a horse. Malone: Where’s his rider? Marguerite: Right here. He’s come to take me home. Come here my big beautiful boy. [Marguerite approaches Grendel gently but he shies away from her.] Whoa…whoa…it’s all right. [Grendel whinnies; he becomes agitated as Marguerite gets closer.] Roxton: Whoa there big fella. Whoa there…whoa there. [Roxton gets close to Grendel and he calms down.] Malone: You know this horse? Roxton: Never seen him before. Now what’s your name huh? Where is your master? [Grendel bushes his forehead against Roxton’s cheek.] Marguerite: Ahhhh he wants you to get on. Roxton: Oh you understand horse I suppose? Marguerite: Well it’s a fairly direct language. Roxton: Okay here we are; easy does it. [Roxton mounts Grendel.] Marguerite: He did it. Roxton: Easy. [Roxton takes off on Grendel.] Marguerite: Roxton come back. Roxton: Whoo hoo! [Grendel takes off at a gallop Roxton is thoroughly enjoying himself. After he’s gone a distance Roxton slows the horse and tries to get him to turn around.] Roxton: Whoa…whoa…now let’s go back. [Grendel fights Roxton’s lead. The reins mysteriously wrap themselves around Roxton’s wrists.] Roxton: What the hell? [Grendel gallops away with Roxton an unwilling passenger.] **** Begin Intro**** At the dawn of the last century A band of explorers searched for a prehistoric world Driven by ambition Secret desires A thirst for adventure And seeking the ultimate story They are befriended by an untamed beauty Stranded in a strange and savage land Each day is a desperate search for a way out - of the Lost World ****End Intro**** [Scene: The jungle – Grendel is taking Roxton through a swamp that is emitting gases.] Roxton: Easy boy…whoa…whoa there big fella; now where are you taking me? The sulfur mines or the gates of hell? [Grendel whinnies] Roxton: You’ll have to be a bit clearer than that. [Grendel takes Roxton to a village.] Guard in tower: Open the gates! Roxton: Friends of yours? [Grendel stops in the village square where the villagers stare.] Nice work. [The reins unwind themselves from Roxton wrists.] Roxton: I guess we’re here; wherever here is. [Roxton dismounts. An old beggar approaches.] Old beggar: Not what is…what can be. Roxton: I beg your pardon? Old beggar: Answer the fire. Question the dragon. Roxton: Fire – dragons - whatever you say old man. [Pragor the guard approaches and leads the old beggar away. He is followed by Balar in a black cape with symbols embroidered on it. Klaire watches.] Roxton: I guess you’d be the man in charge. Balar: Who are you? Roxton: John Roxton [he offers his hand which Balar ignores.] Lord…John Roxton. Balar: You have returned the king’s horse. Where did you find him? Roxton: He found me actually. Balar: You’ve come to claim the throne? Roxton: The throne? No, there must be some mistake. Balar: Grendel allows no one to ride him but the king. Roxton: Well I think he made an exception this time. Balar: There are no exceptions; unless you’re an imposter and you ride the king’s horse through some dark enchantment. Roxton: Excuse me? Balar: If you’re not the king then Grendel has brought you to your death. [Pragor pulls out his sword.] Roxton: Well let’s not get too carried away. Obviously you and the horse know what you’re talking about. I’m the king. Balar: Is that your final answer? Roxton: Yes, yes it is. I am the king! [The village cheers. Klaire is downcast.] Balar: Welcome sire, I am Balar royal advisor to the king. You must be weary from your long journey. [To Pragor] Make sure the king’s horse is well taken care of. [Roxton leads the way further into the village, followed by Klaire and Balar.] [Scene: The treehouse – Marguerite and Malone step off the elevator.] Veronica: Where were you? We were worried. Challenger: You could have signaled to let us know you were all right. Marguerite: Where’s Roxton I want a word with him. Challenger: But he’s with you. Malone: You mean he’s not here? Marguerite: Well I guess he’s still out playing with his horse. Veronica: Horse? What are you talking about? Marguerite: Ask Malone, I’m starved and I’m having a bath a long one. Challenger: But do we need to go and look for him? Marguerite: I’m not going anywhere. Roxton’s a big boy and he’s got a horse. [Scene: Nighttime the village – A celebration is going on; lots of eating and drinking. Roxton, Klaire and Balar are sitting at the royal table.] Balar: Drink! [A serving wench refills Balar’s goblet.] Roxton: What happened to the last king? Balar: King Sigurd and the royal escort went to hunt the dragon. Roxton: Dragon? Klaire: We hoped that the gods might have spared the king. Balar: When Grendel returned with you, we knew we had to except the inevitable and plan for a new beginning. Roxton: And the horse really understands all this? Klaire: Grendel understood every word that King Sigurd said. Roxton: Well, sounds a little too fantastic for me. Klaire: Not in our kingdom; we have always lived with magic. Balar: King Sigurd’s disappearance was especially hard on Klaire; they were to wed. Roxton: I’m sorry for your loss. [Balar stands and raises his glass for a toast.] Balar: The king is dead; long live the king! [Everyone rises] People: Long live King John! [Roxton rises and receives his toast – everyone sits. Roxton takes a drink.] Balar: Congratulations sire, Klaire now belongs to you for bride and queen. [Roxton chokes on his wine.] Roxton: What? Balar: Everything that belonged to King Sigurd now belongs to you. [Scene: King John’s bedchamber. Roxton is looking at a mural, hanging over the bed, of a knight on horseback fighting a fiery dragon.] Roxton: Impressive. Balar: Thank you. Pragor: It is our history. Balar: And our destiny. Roxton: You know with all that’s happened, maybe it’s not such a good idea to rush into this wedding. Balar: There has been much sadness in the kingdom. A wedding would raise the spirits of the people. Roxton: Well a celebration would indeed be fine. But, does there have to be a wedding? Balar: Oh, you are they king. If you do not find Klaire suitable, say so, a dishonorable rejection is nothing compared to losing the man she loved. Roxton: Well if she loved the last king so much, how can she marry me? Balar: It is our custom and customs keep us strong. Sleep well my lord. [Balar and the Pragor depart. Pragor gives instructions to another guard posted at the entrance.] Pragor: Keep watch over him. [Scene: Balar and Pragor walk through the village] Pragor: I don’t understand sire. Why don’t you just use your magic to become king? Balar: Without the will of the kingdom my magic is wasted. Magic can only set in motion what the people themselves must finish. Pragor: I see. Balar: It will be so much more satisfying when they beg me to be their king. Pragor: Hmmm…but? Balar: If you’d had killed the horse when you ambushed King Sigurd we wouldn’t have this problem. Roxton wouldn’t be here. Pragor: Sorry sire. How will we dispose of Roxton? Balar: You leave that to me; you dispose of the horse. Pragor: Yes sire. [Roxton gets out of bed and makes his way to Grendel who is tied up in his stall.] Roxton: I don’t suppose you can take me back to where you found me? [Grendel shakes his head.] I didn’t think so. You know, I’m not sure what you want from me but whatever it is; I think I’m going to need some help. So, how about a message to my friends hmmm; you think you can do that? You do understand the kings English, don’t you? [Grendel whinnies] [Roxton unties Grendel and the horse gallops out of the village. Two guards on patrol notice the fence, surrounding the village, is broken.] Guard: What is it? Pragor: The horse is gone. Who left the gate open? Find that horse. [Scene: Morning the treehouse – Marguerite is asleep in her cot. The sound of an approaching horse awakens her and she sits up.] Marguerite: Roxton? [Veronica, Marguerite, Challenger and Malone all go down to see what’s going on.] Marguerite: Roxton, where are you…come out? [Challenger approaches Grendel.] Challenger: Whoa..whoa there big fella…whoa…whoa. [Grendel whinnies and backs up. He stomps his hoof a few times on the ground.] Veronica: He’s trying to tell us something. Malone: Marguerite, it’s a simple language isn’t it? Marguerite: Roxton quit fooling around. [Grendel motions with his head for them to follow. Marguerite approaches Grendel using a gentle soothing voice.] Marguerite: Come here…come on…hello. [Grendel allows her to stroke his neck.] Ah so you have come for me this time. Well it’s better late than never. [She tries to mount Grendel but he whinnies and shies away.] Challenger: He’s a one man horse hmm. Marguerite: How very old fashioned of him. [Grendel moves away from the group.] Veronica: I think he wants us to follow him. [Grendel moves closer and whinnies in agreement.] Marguerite: What has Roxton got himself mixed up in this time? [Grendel takes off; the group follows.] [Scene: The village – Roxton and Balar step out into the village square where villagers have congregated.] Balar: They are here to honor you and celebrate your great victory. Roxton: And what great victory are we talking about? Balar: Your triumph in defending your throne from [the villagers part like the red sea and a big hulk of a man stands with a quarter staff.] him. Roxton: Another of your customs I suppose? Balar: Your custom too, sire. [Scene: Grendel is leading the group through the swamp.] Marguerite: Oh what a smell this better be a short cut. Malone: It’s only swamp gas Marguerite. Challenger: Methane and hydrocarbons. Highly flammable but they won’t poison us. [Scene: The village – the villagers all gather to watch the challenge.] Balar: You are skilled with a quarter staff? Roxton: Little rusty actually, since I left Sherwood Forest. Balar: The true king has the gods on his side. Roxton: Tell that to King Sigurd. Pragor: The king’s horse; to the gates. Open them. [Veronica, Malone, Marguerite, Challenger and Grendel approach the village gate. As the guards open the gate Grendel gallops off into the jungle. There is a stand off between the group and the guards.] Pragor: What have you done with the king’s horse? Malone: King? Last time I saw that horse he’d only let Roxton ride him. Pragor: Roxton? How do you know King John? Marguerite: King? Veronica: Is he okay? Pragor: I would think so. He has a kingdom, loyal subjects and a beautiful bride. Marguerite: Yes, I’d say he’s okay. Who’s he marrying? Pragor: Who are you? [Roxton and Balar stand at the gate.] Roxton: Friends of mine, release them. Pragor: But they’re armed. Balar: Only the king’s guards may carry arms within the village wall. Your friends will have to surrender their weapons; until they leave it is our custom. Roxton: Fine, they will leave their weapons outside the gates. [Scene: The challenge area. There are poles lying horizontal over an area on the ground.] Veronica: Is this part of the wedding celebration? Balar: A challenge to the throne. The king almost never loses. Marguerite: Almost? Challenger: Quarter staffs Roxton? Marguerite: How medieval. I always thought of you as a thoroughly modern warrior. Roxton: When in Rome. Let’s do it. [Roxton and the challenger step onto the poles. Below the poles a trap door opens to a pit; revealing an agitated raptor.] [Fade Out] [Roxton tosses his hat to Marguerite and the quarter staff battle begins. The challenger gets the upper hand early.] Marguerite: He doesn’t stand a chance against that brute. [The fight continues; Roxton holding his own. The group decides to see if they can intervene.] Malone: We’ve gotta help him. [They are held back by the guards.] Balar: It is forbidden to interfere under penalty of death. Marguerite: But he’s your king he could be killed. Balar: If he is the true king he will prevail. [The fight continues. Roxton almost falls into the pit; the raptor jumps up to take a nip. But he pulls himself up. Roxton gets a few good shots in and gets the challenger off balance. The challenger concedes the fight.] The Challenger: My lord, command me as you will. My life belongs to you. Roxton: Then I shall not waste it. Balar: A noble gesture, but it is not our custom to spare the vanquished. Roxton: Then some of our customs should be revised. Balar: As you wish sire. [Scene: The village square. The group is walking toward Roxton’s chamber. Marguerite hands Roxton’s hat back to him.] Balar: You have given your subjects a reason to celebrate. The king is victorious and compassionate all is well. Our home is your home; the king’s best men are at your service. Marguerite: What a lovely robe my lord. What fine handiwork. Balar: Thank you yes this robe has been worn by the king’s advisors for many years. Marguerite: And what does this say? [Marguerite touches the symbols embroidered on the robe’s edges.] Struggle? Balar: The battle [He takes the robe from her grasp.] The battle can only be won by the hand of man. Challenger: Fascinating. Malone: But what does it mean? Balar: Since the time before man walked the earth good and evil have been locked in battle. It’s all around us; neither can triumph without the help of man. Challenger: Sounds like a solid basis for any religion. Balar: It’s what we believe. [Scene: Roxton’s chamber – The group is left alone.] Marguerite: Why exactly do they think you’re their king? Roxton: Because of the horse. The last king died trying to slay a dragon. And only his true successor can ride his horse. Malone: There’s a headline. Horse crowns king. Roxton: Story on page two, king says no thanks and rides out of town with his friends. Marguerite: Let’s not be too quick to abdicate; royalty has its rewards. Roxton: Well I may be king but Balar is running the show. Veronica: How’s that? Roxton: Well you may not believe this Challenger but everyone around here says there’s some magic. Malone: You’re not falling for that battle of good and evil since before the dawn of time? Challenger: Once you know the details, magic can always be explained by science. Roxton: Good because I’d love to know how that horses reins magically tied me on to him. Marguerite: You know Balar didn’t tell the whole truth about the ruins on his robe. Veronica: You could read them couldn’t you? Marguerite: Ruins aren’t complicated. These described several battles between dragons and kings. Now all the kings were named: Edward; Stanton; Dunston. Malone: Like it was real history not some fairytale? Marguerite: Yeah but the dragon was always the same. Malone: So the dragon lives forever. Roxton: Or no king was able to defeat him. Marguerite: And since no one could defeat it, every king had an advisor whose primary task was to keep the dragon in check. Veronica: Maybe you shouldn’t have pretended to be king in the first place. Roxton: Well I had no choice. It was either king or imposter…and imposters are killed. Marguerite: Is that your intended? [Roxton walks over to the window where Marguerite is standing. Klaire is walking through the village.] Does she know what she’s getting into? [Scene: The village square – Malone is showing a drawing of a dragon from his journal to people in the village.] Malone: Could I see this dragon? Old Beggar: The dragon reigns. Malone: Nice day. You’ve seen this dragon? Old Beggar: Fire of the dragon cleanse us. Malone: I mean seen him, seen him yourself? Old beggar: Fire of the dragon renews us. Malone: Thank you. Any idea where this dragon is? Old Beggar: Seek the answer in daylight not in darkness. Malone: Good advise it’s hard to find things in the dark. Old Beggar: Written on the walls….written on the walls…the words of the prophesy are written on the walls. [Scene: Marguerite sees Roxton over by a fence and walks over.] Roxton: What happened to the horse after it brought you here? Marguerite: Balar’s guards shouted at it and it took off. Roxton: I told you he was smart. I sent him to find you. Marguerite: Klaire’s very sweet. Roxton: And still in love with the last king. Marguerite: She probably always will be you know. Roxton: Fine by me. Marguerite: You’re not attracted to her…at all? Roxton: Oh she’s beautiful. More beautiful than anybody I’ve seen……from this village. Marguerite: It might not be so bad being king for a while. Roxton: I thought you were the one who said kings don’t last very long around here. Marguerite: Ah but if we got rid of Balar I could be your new advisor. Roxton: Ah now there’s your battle between good and evil. [Scene: Nighttime Roxton’s bedchamber.] Malone: Fire of the dragon cleanse us. Fire of the dragon renew us. Roxton: Everybody knows it, not just the beggar. Sounds like a prayer. Challenger: No it’s an incantation used to ward off what they fear the most. Veronica: Did he say anything else? Marguerite: Who cares he’s completely batty. Malone: Seek the answer in daylight it’s written on the wall. Roxton: And is there anything else written on the wall? Malone: Not that I could read. Give these people an F in penmanship. Marguerite: Perfect. [Veronica looks at the mural over the bed.] Veronica: Wait a minute. What if he didn’t mean that wall out there? What if he meant the wall in here? Roxton: Which brings us back to the dragon. Veronica: Look at the background. I think I know that place. [The mural shows the sun rising behind a ridge; its beam hitting a spot below.] Marguerite: Don’t be ridiculous. Veronica: No really. Roxton: Well just possibly. You see, Balar called this mural their destiny. Pragor said it was their history. Challenger: If they think the dragons real then why not the background. Veronica: I can get there. Malone: You can’t go alone. Marguerite: What good would that do? Veronica: I don’t know yet. But seek the answer in daylight. Challenger: Veronica take Malone with you, see what you can find. We’ll create a diversion. [Challenger opens the door for Marguerite. She steps outside and walks over to Pragor who is standing guard.] Marguerite: Hey, you’re not really afraid of this dragon are you; big strong man like you? Pragor: You laugh but the dragon is nothing to be trifled with. Marguerite: No [Veronica and Malone sneak out of the village while Marguerite distracts Pragor.] Pragor: What was that? Marguerite: Oh your poor mind playing tricks on you. Pragor: You know I’m off duty in an hour or so. Marguerite: Really? Pragor: I could show you. Marguerite: A good time? Ya know - if anybody could I’m sure it would be you but, I’m really not fun. [Veronica and Malone exit through a small hole in the wooden fence. The guard posted at the tower sees them.] Tower Guard: Who goes? [Pragor and Balar meet up in the village.] Pragor: Two of our guests have escaped; the blonde and the young man. Shall I find them and bring them back? Balar: No let them go. This will serve our purpose better. [Fade Out] [Scene: The trail - Veronica and Malone are searching for the answer to the prophesy.] Veronica: Come on. [Scene: The village – Balar stands over a cauldron. He throws in a substance that causes a flame to erupt.] Balar: Let the dragon awake. [The guard posted in the tower sees a flame erupt in the distance.] Tower Guard: The dragon! [Balar has assembled the guards and villagers.] Balar: The sanctity of the night has been violated. The dragon has been awoken. [Challenger, Marguerite and Roxton approach.] Roxton: And how can you know that? Balar: The swamp burns with the dragon’s fire. He awaits our offering. Challenger: [whispers to Marguerite] That’s not dragon fire it’s methane gas from the swamp. Balar: The flight of your young friends has angered the dragon; now the dragon must be appeased. There must be a sacrifice; so that the village may survive. [Balar throws the powder into the pit inciting the villagers to chant.] Balar: The dragon is our protector. Villagers: So we obey the dragon. Balar: The fire of the dragon we are cleansed. Villagers: And so we praise the dragon. Balar: The fire of the dragon we are renewed. Villagers: The dragon praised. Balar: Now show us who must shed their blood so the rest of us may live. [Balar throws more powder into the pit causing a white smoke to rise. The image of Klaire appears in the smoke. The village is upset that Klaire must be sacrificed.] Challenger: What kind of chicanery is this? Roxton: This is barbaric Balar and as your king I won’t allow it. Balar: The dragon must be appeased or we will all be destroyed. Roxton: There are no dragons; just fears and superstitions that you’ve created. Balar: The dragon is as real as you or I. And if you don’t obey the smoke, the people will rise up against you. Roxton: And if I take the princess as my wife won’t she then be safe from the dragon? Marguerite: What? Balar: If you marry Princess Klaire she will be safe, but someone else must be selected. [Scene: Roxton’s bedchamber.] Challenger: It’s just smoke and mirrors. No different than any other magic lantern trick we’ve all seen a hundred times before. Marguerite: But the villagers don’t think it’s a trick. Challenger: Well then…maybe we should show them that it is. Roxton: Well even if you do manage to convince my loyal subjects; what good will it do? Balar still intends to make a sacrifice. Marguerite: Yes and thanks to your heroics it could be one of us. Roxton: You wanted me to marry the girl. Challenger: If we show these people that Balar’s magic is a sham then maybe they’ll rise up against him. [Silence from Marguerite and Roxton] Well surely it would be a step in the right direction. Roxton: Well I hope you’re right. What do we need to do it? Challenger: Well, the signal mirrors for starters. [Challenger pulls two signal mirrors from his pockets.] Marguerite: Such a good Boy Scout. [Scene: The trail – Veronica and Malone stop. They see a high ridge in the distance. Veronica: There, doesn’t that look just like the ridge in the mural? Malone: Okay so what if it is, what do we do now? Veronica: Wait and watch. [As the sun rises over the ridge a beam of sunlight points to an area in the valley below.] There that’s where we’re going. [Veronica and Malone arrive at the place the beam pointed at. There is a cave.] Malone: Here? Doesn’t look like much. Veronica: It wouldn’t if they wanted to keep it hidden. It all fits - the mural; the beggar’s words; the sunlight. [They go into the cave.] [Scene: The village square – Challenger has put together a projection box using the signal mirrors and other odds and ends. The villagers are curiously watching what the scientist is doing. ] Challenger: Now, just move to your right Marguerite. [She inches to her right.] There that’s good. [Challenger lines up Marguerite so her image filters through the projection box. It is reflected on the smoke from the pit. The crowd ooo’s and ahhh’s.] See it’s not the smoke. I was doing it and I can do the same for any of you. Volunteers? [He selects a young girl and is ready to demonstrate again when Balar and his guards approach.] Balar: What black magic is this? What kind of wizard are you? Roxton: He is no wizard he’s a man of science. Challenger: I’m no different than you are. You have no magic powers. Balar: Let us ask the smoke. [Balar throws a powder into the pit.] Reveal to us the charlatan. [The image of Challenger is revealed in the smoke.] And who will satisfy the dragon’s wrath? [The image of Marguerite appears in the smoke. The guards pull their swords and grab Marguerite, Roxton steps forward.] Roxton: Stop right there. As king I decree there will be no more sacrifices. Villagers: King John is right. Balar: Once more your compassion has moved the crowd majesty. But you’ll have to convince the dragon in single combat. Marguerite: What? [Balar walks away and Roxton follows.] Roxton: I guess you got me where you wanted me all along. Balar: I don’t understand sire; where would that be? Roxton: Out of the way. Balar: Oh not at all, you can still sacrifice your friend. Roxton: No, this is between you and me. Balar: As you wish my lord. [Scene: The cave – Veronica has a torch and sees coffins.] Veronica: Malone. Malone: Coffins. Veronica: This must be the royal crypt. Malone: These must be the old kings like on the mural in Roxton’s quarters. Edward…Stanton…Dunstan. Veronica: What a great place to hide a secret. Malone: Yeah, where do we start? Veronica: It’s gotta be here somewhere. [Veronica notices a hole in the wall to the cave and the beam of sunlight is pointing to an area on the opposite wall. The wall has a carving matching the mural.] Well this looks promising. [Malone walks over to the carving.] Copy it down. Malone: Let’s hope it’s more than the ninth century version of ‘Spike was here’. Veronica: Marguerite will know. [Scene: Roxton’s bedchamber - Challenger, Roxton and Marguerite are sitting when guards come into the room and surround them. Balar and Klaire enter.] Balar: It is time to fight the dragon. Roxton: Where is it? Balar: Approaching the village. [Balar motions the guards to raise their swords.] Roxton: What the hell is going on? Balar: Should you fail your friends will be sacrificed to appease it. Roxton: I thought one sacrifice was enough? Balar: Confrontation annoys the dragon. His rage won’t be so easily calmed now. You will find King Sigurd’s sword at the edge of the village and I will offer up incantations……for your victory. [Balar and Roxton exit.] [Scene: Veronica and Malone leave the cave and make their way back to the village.] [Scene: Roxton is outside the village handling King Sigurd’s sword. The old beggar approaches.] Roxton: I bet Sir George got a bigger one. Old beggar: We cleanse ourselves…we are renewed. Roxton: You best get out of here. Old beggar: The dragon breath…dragon fire…nothing can survive dragon fire. Roxton: I wish you could make some sense. Old beggar: We are all much more than we appear to be. Roxton: I hope you’re right old man. Old beggar: Written on the wall….written on the wall. [The old beggar goes back through the gate. Roxton looks up and sees the dragon head appear above some trees. It roars and spews fire.] Roxton: Well I’ll be damned. [Fade Out] [The dragon approaches and the dragon fire lands very close to Roxton.] Roxton: Oh terrific. [He looks at King Sigurd’s sword.] What am I going to do with this? [Roxton takes off and the dragon follows.] [Scene: Roxton’s bedchamber – Marguerite and Challenger are pacing while the guards stand watch. Pragor enters the bedchamber.] Marguerite: Where’s Balar? Shouldn’t the king’s advisor be trying to save him? Pragor: That’s not your problem; nor mine. [The roar of the dragon can be heard in the distance.] Challenger: That was definitely not a T-Rex. Marguerite: How do you kill a dragon? Veronica? [Scene: The jungle – Roxton is running for his life with the dragon hot on his heels.] Roxton: You should find a dentist. [Grendel approaches.] Grendel, easy boy about time you showed up. [Roxton mounts Grendel and rides off.] [Scene: Roxton’s bedchamber – There is a clanking noise.] Pragor: What was that? [He goes to the window to take a look.] Marguerite: I didn’t hear anything. [She walks over and grabs a goblet.] Pragor: What are you doing? Don’t touch that. Marguerite: I was just wondering how old it was. Pragor: It doesn’t matter to you now put it down. Marguerite: Whatever you say. [She takes the goblet and hits Pragor across the face with it. Challenger punches a guard. Veronica and Malone enter the bedchamber and join the fight against the guards. Pragor grabs Marguerite from behind.] Marguerite: Let go of me. [Malone punches Pragor.] Malone: You heard the lady. [Veronica takes out the last guard.] Challenger: Quick tie them up. Marguerite: What did you find out? Malone: The legend is all true. Veronica: We found the royal crypt. Malone: Can you make any sense out of this? [Malone hands Marguerite his journal where he copied down the words from the cave.] Marguerite: This we know through centuries of battling the dragon. So purely evil is the dragon that nothing can withstand the dragon fire. Malone: That’s it? Even they say that nothing can beat the dragon? Marguerite: I didn’t make it up; I just translate. Challenger: No that’s not quite what they said Malone. What they’re saying is the dragon can defeat everything. Veronica: I’m sorry what’s the difference? Challenger: Well it’s a small difference but it’s very important. I think if we’re clever enough we can get the dragon to defeat itself. Veronica: Even if he is magic. Challenger: It’s our only hope; after all we’ve seen. I think we have to accept that, for now, there’s magic afoot. Now Malone you take one of these mirrors. Find a spot near the edge of the swamp where you can see the sun and wait for my signal. Veronica, Marguerite you must find Roxton get him to lure the dragon to where Malone is waiting by the edge of the swamp. Marguerite: What are you gonna do? Challenger: I’ll meet you there; just a few final adjustments I have to make. I think we can cook up a real surprise for this dragon. [Marguerite, Veronica and Malone exit the village] Veronica: Hurry [Marguerite and Veronica head off one way and Malone another.] Marguerite: I can’t believe I’m trying to find a fire breathing dragon. [Roxton appears behind them on top Grendel.] Roxton: Try fighting one with a sword. Marguerite: Oh thank God you’re all right. How did you get away? Roxton: Grendel here knows a short cut. Where’s Challenger and Malone? Veronica: Challenger’s got a plan. Roxton: A good one I hope. Marguerite: Ahhh you have to go back and find the dragon. [Scene: A field - Roxton and Grendel gets the dragon’s attention.] Roxton: You looking for me? [Roxton gets the dragon to follow him.] Come on! Come on! [Roxton leads the dragon into the swamp.] This way fire-bag! [Challenger, Veronica and Marguerite are standing in the distance the projection box on the ground beside them.] Roxton: Hurry up Challenger. [Malone holds his signal mirror up and reflects the sunlight into the projection box. Roxton is positioned that his image is reflected in the swamp gas.
