[Scene: The men are on an excursion collecting plants. Roxton pulls up a
plant wraps it and hands it to Challenger.]

Challenger: Ow damn. It’s just a thorn.

Summerlee: You should really be more careful Challenger. It’s taken us
nearly two days to find Silybum Marianum.

Challenger: I’m overwhelmed by your concern for my health.

Summerlee: I’ll make a salve for your hand just as soon as we get the
plants safely back home.

Roxton: Any more on your list professor?

Summerlee: Just one Yarrow Allheal.

Malone: I think I found it. Fern like leaves and bunches of little white
flowers.

Summerlee: Eureka!

[A woman’s scream comes from the distance. Malone takes off first.
Challenger throws Roxton his rifle from the balloon nearby. Challenger and
Roxton follow Malone when Roxton stops]

Roxton: Careful Challenger.

Challenger: What the hell are you doing?

[Roxton springs a trap, two branches swing in front of them with huge
thorns.]

Roxton: Deathtrap this grove is probably full of them.

Challenger: Summerlee don’t move this whole place is booby trapped.

Roxton: Follow me step exactly where I do.

Challenger: You best wait here.

[Malone comes on a woman lying atop an altar. She is pregnant with a man
standing over her. Two women stand by her head one holding her hand.]

Malone: Let her go!

[The man stops and yells for Malone to stop coming any closer. Malone hits
a trap and a poison arrow hits him in the neck. Roxton and Challenger
approach; Roxton pointing his gun at the man while Challenger checks Malone
who is on the ground.]

Roxton: Not another inch.

Challenger: Oh my God Malone.

Roxton: How is he?

Challenger: He’s dead.

[Scene: The altar - Challenger pulls the dart from Malone’s neck.]

Challenger: It’s Curare.

Lento: I can save him, there’s not much time.

Challenger: Then get to it!

Roxton: Challenger

Challenger: There’s nothing we can do, if there’s any chance.

Roxton: If he dies - you die.

[Lento stands over Malone putting his hands on his chest. The wind kicks up
and Lento is in pain. It’s like a shock goes through him.]

Challenger: He’s breathing; I can’t believe it.

Lento: I can do no more for him now we must take him to the village.

[Scene: The treehouse – Marguerite is taking a bubble bath. She towels off
and put on a silk smoking jacket. She walks over to the wood stove and
pours herself some tea. Veronica is nearby sharpening her knife when she
notices what Marguerite is wearing.]

Veronica: What are you doing with that?

Marguerite: Drinking it.

Veronica: Take it off.

Marguerite: Excuse me?

Veronica: My father’s jacket; take it off now.

Marguerite: If you’ll recall I sacrificed my silk jacket for Challengers
electric generator surely you wouldn’t begrudge me a little pleasure.

Veronica: It’s not yours.

Marguerite: It’s been sitting in the trunk gathering moths for what eleven
years. It’s not he’s was using it.

Veronica: Take it off or I’ll cut it off.

Marguerite: My my - daddy’s little girl’s all grown up.

[Marguerite slips off the jacket.]

[Scene: The trail to Lento’s village - Malone is being carried on a
stretcher]

Summerlee: Will he make it?

Lento: I will not let him die.

Summerlee: And what about the woman in labor?

Lento: I’ve stopped her labor for the moment Asu will rest and pray until
her time.

Summerlee: You’ve left the women alone?

Lento: It’s a sacred place well protected as your friend has learned.

[Roxton and Challenger are trailing behind each has one side of the
stretcher]

Challenger: Relax it makes no sense for him to revive Malone and then try
to kill us.

Roxton: What doesn’t make sense is Malone rising from the dead.

Challenger: Do you have a better explanation?

Roxton: Maybe the darts were only a tranquilizer.

Challenger: You think he’s leading us into an ambush.

Roxton: Our hands are on the stretcher instead of our guns.

Lento: We’re there.

Roxton: I don’t see any village.

Lento: You know how to look but you don’t yet know how to see.

[They look up. There is a village built within the trees.]

Summerlee: My word.

[Scene: Veronica is working in her garden. Marguerite comes from behind
and points a rifle at her.]

Marguerite: Get one thing straight put a knife to my throat again you
better finish the job.

Veronica: What are you gonna do shoot me?

Marguerite: Live by the sword.

[A dinosaur comes out of the jungle behind Marguerite. She reaches for her
knife.]

Marguerite: Don’t press your luck.

Veronica: Shhh don’t move - behind you.

Marguerite: Where?

Veronica: On the path a Herrerasaur and he looks hungry.

Marguerite: Can we make it to the treehouse? [Veronica shakes her head]
Could this day get any better?

Veronica: They hunt in packs.

Marguerite: Of course they do.

Veronica: Follow me on three; one-two-three.

[Marguerite turns and takes a shot. The women make a run for it the
Herrerasaur in hot pursuit. They jump over a log not seeing the open well
shaft. One after the other they fall in.]

[Scene: Lentos village]

Challenger: An entire village in the trees.

Roxton: And the only way out is fifty feet straight down.

Challenger: It was an accident.

Roxton: Was it?

Challenger: How is he Summerlee?

Summerlee: Pale, feverish I can hardly feel a pulse.

Challenger: Malone

Summerlee: And you say all Lento did was lay hands on him?

Challenger: There was a strange light.

Summerlee: An aura.

Roxton: What are you two talking about?

Challenger: The body’s electric charge. Perhaps Lento manipulated it in
some way, changed the polarity of the neural endings.

Summerlee: He’s fading.

Challenger: Do something Summerlee.

Summerlee: I’m a botanist for heaven sake not a faith healer.

Challenger: All right take it easy.

Summerlee: Malone dying and I haven’t a clue how to help him.

Roxton: I do.

Yura: His life is not your concern.

Lento: We poisoned him our dart; when all he wanted was to help Asu. I
can’t let him die.

Roxton: Damn right you can’t.

Yura: As village elder I forbid it. Think of the village think of the
baby.

Lento: I do. You know as well as I. There must be harmony before the
child enters the world; to let this man die at our hands.

Roxton: If you can save him you’d better be fast he won’t last much longer.

Lento: I’ll be fine - your friend will be too.

[Lento is at Malone’s head, his hands crossed over his chest.]

Lento: Surrender your pain. Now is not your time. Comeback! Look at me!
Look at me!

Yura: Enough you need to rest.

Lento: Not yet! Look at me!

[Malone sits straight up.]

Summerlee: He saved Malone.

[Lento reels back and collapses Yura is beside him.]

Yura: And destroyed himself; you don’t know what you’ve done.

[Lento eyes turn yellow.]

[Scene: The well]

Marguerite: I think I’ve missed a step.

Veronica: It’s better than being dinner.

Marguerite: Only just; that’s the last time I play follow the leader with
you.

Veronica: I’ll get us out of here.

Marguerite: Sounds fair - you did get to us in.

[Scene: Lento’s village – Yura has Lento locked up in a cell]

Yura: Lento

Lento: What are you doing? Yura, you have nothing to fear from me. I am
what I was; nothing has changed.

Yura: You were the best of us. Your memory will be honored.

Lento: Come on, there’s work to be done. Who is going to bring the new
shaman into the world?

Yura: Not you.

Lento: I am your healer. I am your friend.

Yura: No, you are what destroyed my friend.

Lento: I have given my life for this village - my soul. And now you repay
me with murder.

[Lento eyes become yellow and boils appear on his face.]

Lento/Beast: Released me! You know what is in me. I will make you suffer
every horror my hands have ever touched. I will rip your beating heart from
your chest and fill it with an eternity of agony. Yura! Yura!

[Outside Yura approaches the four men.]

Roxton: Come on it’s time to go.

Malone: Wait! How is he?

Yura: He’s finished.

Malone: Finished?

Roxton: There must be something you can do for him?

Yura: Yes there is. We will kill him.

[Fade Out]

[Scene: Lento’s village - Malone, Challenger and Roxton are in a room by
themselves]

Malone: You buy this?

Challenger: They believe all sickness is caused by evil.

Malone: They actually think he’s been taken over by demons.

Challenger: No not quite not taken over; just filled.

Malone: Not you too?

Roxton: You were dying now you’re not.

Malone: But if that’s true than it is my fault. He’s gonna die because of
me.

Challenger: It is not your fault.

Malone: If I hadn’t rushed into the grove.

Roxton: And if the woman hadn’t of screamed; if the darts hadn’t of been
poisoned.

Challenger: And if I hadn’t of told him to save you.

Roxton: Too many ifs my friend. Malone I didn’t know it was going to be
your life for his.

Malone: And if you had?

[Scene: Lento’s village - outside]

Summerlee: So you have no medicines at all? No herbal remedies?

Yura: We have no need. For generations there has always been a shaman to
take on the illness of the village.

Summerlee: Until now.

Yura: Asu’s child will be born at moon rise. He is destined to become the
greatest of our healers.

Malone: What about Lento?

Yura: It was the healers bargain every gift has its price.

Malone: So it would seem.

Yura: Lento knew that one day he might overflow with the evil inside him.
Believe me whatever is left of his soul is welcoming the release that death
will bring.

Malone: No one welcomes death.

Summerlee: That’s not our decision to make.

Malone: So we’re just gonna stand around and do nothing while they murder
him?

Summerlee: Lento sacrificed himself for his people. Not really so
different from a certain carpenter who gave his life for our souls.

[Scene: The well – Marguerite is standing on Veronica shoulders.]

Marguerite: I need to be higher.

Veronica: I’m trying.

Marguerite: Higher

Veronica: This is as high as I go.

[Marguerite doesn’t see the snake that is near her hand]

Marguerite: Almost got it - a little more.

Veronica: There is no more.

[Marguerite sees she accidentally grabbed the snake. She is startled and
falls back to the bottom of the well.]

Marguerite: Where is it?

Veronica: What? Where’s what?

[Marguerite points to the snake and Veronica begins to laugh and picks up
the snake.]

Veronica: Oh you poor thing. Did that big bad lady frighten you?

Marguerite: What the hell are you doing?

Veronica: It’s a Scarlet King he's perfectly harmless; the jungle’s full of
them.

Marguerite: Doesn’t mean you treat them like family.

Veronica: No sense you being trapped down here with us. There’s enough
snakes down here already.

[Veronica throws the snake up and out of the well. The Herrerasaur grabs
it.]

Marguerite: If you insist on feeding the wild animals; they’ll never learn
to fend for themselves.

Veronica: You could be up there with them.

Marguerite: No I prefer being stuck down a twenty foot hole - with you.
Never had a sister to share cherished moments with.

[Scene: Lento’s village – The cell]

Lento: You look better.

Malone: Good as new thanks to you.

Lento: If it weren’t for our dart you wouldn’t have needed me. You’re
trying to help Asu weren’t you? You’re a hero.

Malone: Some hero. I wanted to say I’m sorry.

Lento: For what?

Malone: It was my illness - my evil.

Lento: You think it overwhelmed me?

Malone: Yura said…

Lento: Do you really have that much evil in you? Yura has been waiting for
a chance like this for months now.

Malone: Why?

Lento: The child, his powers will eclipse mine or those of any healer we’ve
seen for generations. But first he must be guided, trained. Whoever
controls the shaman controls the village.

Malone: My friends and I will get you out of here.

Lento: At least there’s a healer who will follow me. Maybe he’ll be strong
enough to resist Yura. I’ll never know.

Malone: I won’t let them kill you.

Lento: If it is my time to die?

Malone: It’s not. It’s not your time to die.

[Scene: The well – Marguerite is pacing; Veronica sitting]

Veronica: Relax, when the dinosaurs get hungry they’ll go hunt somewhere
else. Until then we wait.

Marguerite: Assuming we don’t starve to death.

Veronica: That won’t happen.

Marguerite: Really

Veronica: No! No water, we’ll die of thirst first. I’ll get us out of
here. You’ll just have to do something I imagine is difficult for you.

Marguerite: What’s that?

Veronica: Trust me.

[Scene: Lento’s village - Lento is being lead to be hanged.]

Yura: We are forever grateful for your sacrifice. In every age your name
will be whispered with reverence.

[The noose is placed around Lento’s neck. Challenger, Roxton, Summerlee and
Malone look on. The stool is kicked out from under Lento and he dangles.
Malone steps forward and shoots the noose causing Lento to fall to the
ground. Lento escapes some men who try to stop him, he cuts his hands loose
on a knife stuck in a plank. He grabs the knife and throws it at Yura.]

Lento: Goodbye old friend.

[A woman screams “No!” steps in front of Yura. The knife hits her in the
back.]

Yura: Demon!

[Lento escapes. Men grab Malone.]

[Fade Out]

[Scene: Lento’s village - Yura kisses the cheek of the woman who took the
knife for him. He covers her dead body with a blanket as she is carried
away.]

Challenger: What have you done with Malone?

Yura: Your friend will stay here until it is time.

Summerlee: Time, time for what?

Yura: For his death.

Challenger: He’s still sick; he’s feverish. He thought you were hanging an
innocent man.

Roxton: We’ll take him away. You’ll never see us again.

Yura: I’m sorry but the child foretold to be our next shaman will be born
at moonrise tonight. Balance must be restored before the birth – a life for
a life.

Roxton: We could take him by force if necessary.

Yura: You’d have to kill every one of us to do so. I don’t believe you’re
that kind of man.

Challenger: He didn’t kill that woman Lento did.

Yura: That woman was my granddaughter and Lento is not here.

Roxton: Then we’ll return him.

Yura: You’ll die. He has powers beyond healing. He will use the jungle
against you.

Challenger: We’re wasting time.

Roxton: If he’s as dangerous as you say; we’ll need Malone. We’ll need all
the help we can get.

Yura: No I can’t risk you not returning – A life for a life.

Summerlee: I believe I may have a solution.

[Malone’s cell]

Malone: What’s going on? Did they find him?

Summerlee: Not yet that is your job.

[The cell is being unlocked.]

Malone: I’m free! Summerlee how the hell did you do that? You’re a
genius.

[Malone steps out of the cell Summerlee steps in.]

Malone: What are you doing let him out!

Summerlee: I’m afraid that is the bargain Yura felt that you’d be more help
in hunting Lento then I. But someone had to remain in your place; quite
practical really.

Malone: Not gonna hang you?

Summerlee: Yes that is the idea. Unless of course you can bring Lento back
by moon rise.

Malone: Summerlee I can’t let you die because of me.

Summerlee: Then I suggest you hurry.

[Scene: The well]

Marguerite: What a waste that was the last of my bubble bath from Harrods.

Veronica: You’re amazing.

Marguerite: Hey if you had learned how to share we wouldn’t be down this
hole right now.

Veronica: You knew that jacket was my father’s; you did it deliberately.

Marguerite: You’re delusional.

Veronica: You don’t have enough stuff of your own? You have to go steal my
father’s clothes. That’s why you did it you’re jealous.

Marguerite: Now you’re raving; probably claustrophobic.

Veronica: It’s because I knew my parents. I can remember my mother and
father and you…

Marguerite: I can’t - score one for you; just my luck to get stuck with
Freud of the jungle. Personally I think families are overrated. I’ve
always done just fine on my own - more than fine. Drop me anywhere on this
earth I’ll survive. I don’t need parents. I don’t need anyone.

Veronica: Maybe we’re not so different after all.

Marguerite: I must have bubble bath on the brain. I swear I can hear
running water.

[Veronica stops to listen. She puts her ear to the well wall.]

Marguerite: What?

Veronica: Shh

Marguerite: What are you doing?

Veronica: It’s an underground stream. This hole was a working well at one
time. You wanna get out of here? Here’s your chance - start digging.

[Scene: The jungle – Lento is scraping some tree bark into a bowl. An
ape-man jumps out at Lento]

Lento: Welcome my friend.

[Lento grabs the ape-man and the wind picks up their two bodies shake the
ape-man growls. Challenger, Roxton and Malone hear the growl and run toward
the sound. They find the ape-man dead.]

Roxton: Not a mark on him.

Malone: How the hell did Lento do this?

Roxton: This way.

Challenger: Looks like he went through here.

Malone: Wait

Roxton: This way too.

Malone: He wants us to split up.

Challenger: We’re running out of time. I don’t think we have a choice. Each
of us will have to take a trail.

Roxton: Not even a shaman can be three places at once. Fire a shot if you
see him then wait for the others. Don’t take any chances we don’t need any
dead heroes.

[Scene: The well – Marguerite and Veronica are digging out the wall.]

Marguerite: Besides ruining my nails I don’t know what good this is doing.

Veronica: Look at the rest of the wall Marguerite. Its clay and limestone,
these rocks are granite. Somebody put them here.

Marguerite: On purpose? Somebody had too much time on their hands.

Veronica: They put them here to dam up a working well. Even if it’s an
underground stream at least we’ll have fresh water. [water starts to trickle
out of the wall. Veronica pulls more stone away] If it’s a river…

Marguerite: Now what we drown?

Veronica: No, we float.

[More water seeps through the wall.]

[Scene: The three men are following their trails. Roxton is hit by a
swinging branch. He falls down a steep hill. Malone steps into a trap and
is left hanging upside down. He grabs his knife and cuts himself down.
Lento comes up behind Challenger. Challenger turns around and points his
rifle at Lento.]

Challenger: Keep your hands where I can see them. [Lento steps forward]
That’s close enough.

Lento: Come now I have no weapons [another step forward.]

Challenger: One more and your dead.

[Lento raises his palm and blows a powder at Challenger’s face. Challenger
falls to his knees screaming in pain covering his eyes. Malone and Roxton
run toward the screaming.]

[Scene: The altar - Asu is screaming in pain ready to give birth.
Summerlee is brought out; his hands tied.]

Summerlee: For heaven’s sake where do you think I’m going to go trust up
like a chicken?

Yura: I’m sorry we must repay my granddaughter life.

Summerlee: What are you doing to that woman?

Yura: Nothing

Summerlee: That’s obvious and dangerous. Her labors stalled and if you
don’t help her you’re going to lose them both.

Yura: We will be doing something.

[A knife is put to Summerlee’s throat.]

Summerlee: You can kill me right away and risk that child needlessly dying,
or you can let me help Asu. You can always kill me later.

[Yura agrees to Summerlee help.]

[Scene: The trail - Lento approaches Challenger]

Challenger: My eyes.

Lento: Don’t be afraid I am Lento the healer. I take on the misery of the
world. No one will supplant me.

[Challenger runs off struggling through the jungle. Lento comes up behind
and trips him. Challenger falls to the ground.]

Lento: Let me help you.

[Lento grabs Challenger’s hand and bends his fingers. Challenger screams in
agony.]

Lento: That is how I feel now, constantly day and night. That is how I
will feel for the rest of my life.

[Lento grabs a knife and pokes Challenger’s chest.]

Lento: When it’s too much tell me, and I’ll make it stop - forever.

[Roxton and Malone appear and Roxton shoots Lento in the shoulder. Lento
runs off. Malone runs to Challenger.]

Malone: It’s alright Challenger it’s us.

Roxton: Are you all right?

Challenger: I can’t see I’m blind.

[Fade Out]

Malone: Any better?

Challenger: I’m fine fine.

Roxton: Really? How many fingers am I holding up?

Challenger: Three

Roxton: Sorry

Challenger: Enough games.

Roxton: We can’t leave you here.

Malone: And we can’t give up on Summerlee either.

Roxton: Dammit we’re running out of time. Even if we catch Lento; we won’t
make it back to the village before moon rise.

Challenger: Moon rise the baby. Lento said no one would supplant him. He
must have meant the baby.

Malone: He’s circling back to the grove.

Roxton: Where are you going?

Malone: After Lento.

Roxton: Oh no……not alone.

Malone: Somebody’s gotta stay here with Challenger I need to finish this.

Roxton: And if he kills you?

Malone: Well then it will be your turn.

Roxton: Just be careful Malone. The whole grove is full of booby traps.

Malone: I know.

Challenger: Just slow him down we’ll try to get back to the altar before
him.

Malone: Just protect the child.

Roxton: Have you ever killed anyone before?

Malone: I was in the war.

Roxton: Answer the question.

Malone: I’ve seen death.

Roxton: You’re just a reporter Malone; killing an animal is very different
then killing a human being. To look him in the eye know you are about to
end his life. Just remember - Lento - he isn’t human anymore.

[Scene: Nighttime at the altar]

Man: Is this it?

Summerlee: No Black Cohosh; this is Black Cohosh. I need more of it I need
as much of it as you can find. There’s some in our own balloon please bring
it all here.

Yura: She’s dying.

Summerlee: No she’s dehydrating. Where’s the water? Good…good…make sure
she drinks.

[Scene: The well – Marguerite and Veronica are floating in brown water]

Marguerite: What if it doesn’t fill up all the way?

Veronica: We’ll be stuck treading water in a freezing wet hole. As long as
we can float high enough to reach those [vines] Then we can climb the rest
of the way. [Marguerite sees a snake swimming in the water behind Veronica]
What?

Marguerite: Oh nothing.

[Marguerite grabs the snake and holds it.]

Veronica: What are you doing?

Marguerite: Seeing if our friends are waiting for us. [Marguerite throws
the snake up out of the well] Looks like the coast is clear.

[Scene: Malone is on the trail of Lento. He sees Lento leaning against a
tree hand over his wounded arm glowing red. Lento senses someone is
watching him; he runs off. Malone goes after him but stumbles over a trap
and is left hanging off the ledge of a pit filled with spikes. Malone tries
to climb up to reach his gun on the ground. Lento appears and takes the
gun.]

Lento: Is this what you’re looking for? [Malone grabs a stone within
reaching distance] Is that the best you can do?

Malone: It’s good enough.

[Malone throws the rock and trips another trap. A log swings down and hits
Lento knocking him to the ground. Giving Malone time to climb from the
ledge and grab his gun and point it at Lento.]

Lento: Please help me. You did this to me. I gave my life for yours.
Help me!

[Malone lowers his gun. Lento takes his chance and charges Malone. Malone
shoots him and drops his gun. Lento transforms to his old self his boils
disappear.]

Malone: I’m sorry.

Lento: No. It was the only way.

Malone: But you gave me life.

Lento: And you have given me back my soul.

Malone: I’ll go get some help.

Lento: There’s no time. Thank you [Lento dies]

[Scene: The altar - The baby his been born Asu hands him to Yura]

[Epilogue]

[Scene: Veronica and Marguerite are sitting outside having climbed out of
the well]

Marguerite: Well that was an adventure. That was a great save thanks.

Veronica: Consider us even.

Marguerite: How do you figure that? [Veronica grabs her knife and throws
it at a tree behind Marguerite] Hey!

[Veronica walks over to the tree and pulls down the snake that Marguerite
had earlier thrown from the well.]

Veronica: Coral snake very pretty also very deadly. If you hadn’t grabbed
it before it reached me.

Marguerite: I thought you said it was harmless you know the jungles full of
them.

Veronica: Scarlet King is harmless the Coral snake on the other hand is
lethal. It’s an easy mistake to make for beginners.

[Veronica walks past Marguerite then teasingly tosses the snake at her.
Marguerite screams.]

[Scene: The altar – Summerlee puts a wet compress across Challenger eyes.]

Summerlee: There this should help a bit. Is that any better?

Challenger: Good enough – Thanks [Challenger hears the baby] Where is he? I
want to see the baby.

Malone: You mean this baby?

Challenger: The new shaman; your new healer. He must be a handsome fellow.

[Malone brings the baby over to Challenger.]

Malone: Yes SHE is. He is a beautiful little girl.

[Challenger holds the girl and touches her face to his cheek. His eyesight
returns.]
