[The old man is running being chased by an ape-man. The ape-man charges the old man but before it can reach him Challenger shoots the ape-man.] Challenger: It’s all right you’re safe now. [They give the weak man some water. Veronica notices a locket he wears around his neck.] Veronica: Oh my god! Where did you get this? Challenger: Easy now he’s in a bad way. Veronica: It’s my mother’s. Sinta: Veronica Veronica: You know me? Sinta: I am Sinta. Veronica: No Challenger: What’s wrong? Veronica: Sinta was my parent’s guide he was only nineteen when they left. Challenger: No easy task for a man in his condition. Malone: Are you sure he was your parents guide? Roxton: I bet plenty of expeditions hummed Beethoven to pass the time. Summerlee: I’m sure Sinta would have wanted you to have this. [Veronica empties out Sinta’s pouch.] Marguerite: Not much of an inheritance I’m afraid, a few trinkets and a map. Challenger: He must have been mapping his route as he went along. Veronica: I know these hills - that swamp. This can’t be more than four or five days from here. Challenger: That’s only if the maps to scale. Veronica: I don’t care if it’s four months. Malone: You’ll need some company. Marguerite: You’re not serious. Roxton: And someone along to watch your back. Challenger: Count me in. Summerlee: And me if there’s a chance of finding your parents. Marguerite: There isn’t. Let’s look at this logically shall we? They’ve been gone what eleven years. If they were only a couple of days away don’t you think you would’ve heard from them by now? Face it Veronica they’re either not there or they’re… Malone: Veronica it’s okay we’re all with you. Marguerite: This is ridiculous. Roxton: If you don’t like it stay here. [Roxton and Marguerite leave the room to argue in private. Roxton starts to pack his gear.] Marguerite: This is a wild goose chase. Roxton: I meant it - don’t come. Marguerite: I won’t be dismissed Roxton not by you not by anyone. Roxton: Nobody’s asked for anything. Marguerite: Really what about your rifle. Roxton: What about it? Marguerite: Expensive top of the line and I paid for it. I paid for everything; this is my expedition Roxton. Roxton: Fine keep it. Marguerite: What? Roxton: The rifle you paid for it - it’s yours. Marguerite: That’s not what I meant. Roxton: Without Veronica we all would have been dead a long time ago, and what we owe her has nothing to do with money. Marguerite: This is a waste of time she’s not going to find her parents. [They are now nose to nose Roxton waving a finger at her.] Roxton: Maybe not but right now hope is all she’s got and if you take that away from her Marguerite so help me. Marguerite: You’ll what? Summerlee: I believe it’s time we left. I hope I’m not interrupting. Roxton: Nothing important. Summerlee: Really? You know the way you to bicker anyone would think you were married [Scene: The trail to find Veronica’s parents] Veronica: It’s been five days we should be there by now? Roxton: We’ve lost the trail. Veronica: We’ve gone past the ridge and beyond the river. Roxton: It’ll be dark soon. We’ll make camp for the night; get our bearings in the morning. Veronica: No we have to keep going. Malone: Listen to him we won’t find anything in the dark. Veronica: There’s no time. Roxton: Veronica a few hours won’t… Veronica: Won’t make a difference if they’re dead. Roxton: That’s not what I meant. Veronica: They’re alive I know they are - they have to be. Summerlee: But you saw him the premature aging Progeria Syndrome there’s no other explanation. Challenger: In the outside world. Summerlee: Cell degeneration at that level, what else could cause that? Challenger: You’re forgetting where we are. It could be an infection a new tropical poison. Relax Summerlee we’ll know soon enough. Marguerite: That’s what he’s afraid of. [Scene: Nighttime – They have made camp and are eating dinner. Marguerite is sitting off by herself.] Roxton: Hmmm taste like - chicken Challenger: I can’t believe you’re eating an Ornithosuchus. Just one of those creatures and I would have the whole of the London Zoological Society falling over themselves at my feet. Summerlee: Proof positive of your lost world George and we’re having it for dinner. Roxton: Law of the jungle Challenger either we eat it or it eats us. [Roxton walks over to Marguerite he offers her some food, she declines.] Roxton: Not hungry? Marguerite: Go away. Roxton: You might as well eat it; you paid for it. What’s bothering you? Marguerite: What do you care? Roxton: I care because you have an incredible instinct for self preservation. If you’re worried about something, we all should be. Marguerite: You want to know what’s bothering me. Fine - you heard Summerlee’s diagnosis. Roxton: Sounded reasonable enough to me. Marguerite: He’s wrong Progeria attacks children not young men. Whatever destroyed Sinta was something else; something deadly - and we’re headed right for it. [Veronica and Malone are talking alone by the campfire.] Veronica: Sometimes I lie awake remembering - a song - a laugh. And then I try to picture their faces. Not from the photographs but as they really were looking down on me. I can’t, I can’t anymore. Malone: We’ll find them. One thing you can’t do is give up hope. Veronica: Marguerite said. Malone: A lot of things she didn’t mean; you can’t listen to her. Veronica: But she was right Ned - if my parents are still alive. Malone: I’m sure they are. Veronica: Then why haven’t they come back for me? [The group is asleep Malone is on watch. He hears a snap and a growl in the distance. He gets Roxton.] Roxton: What is it? Malone: I don’t know. It may not be anything. [They hear another noise.] Roxton: Wake the others. Malone: They’re up. Challenger: Where? Malone: Up there. Roxton: Whatever it is - it’s big and it’s coming this way. Challenger: We’ll head for the stream try to lose the scent. [A huge dinosaur comes out of the jungle.] Summerlee: Dear God! Veronica: Run! [The dinosaur tramples over the camp sight as they run away.] Veronica: We’ll never make it to the river. Roxton: Quick find some shelter, a cave - anything you can defend. Marguerite: What about you? Challenger: The bullets won’t do you any good its hide his three foot thick. [The dinosaur growls at Challenger and Roxton they growl back then run] Malone: Up ahead I think I seen an opening. Marguerite: Where are the others? Roxton: Right behind you. [They duck into a cave.] Marguerite: We’ve been running for hours. Malone: Do you think we’ve lost ‘em? Roxton: I wouldn’t bet on it. Challenger: Are only chance is to find another way out of here. Summerlee: If there is another way out. [Malone sees bones on the floor.] Malone: I think we’re in trouble. Marguerite: Great idea Malone - run for the caves. Summerlee: My God it’s herded us into its lair. Veronica: It’s found us. Roxton: This is it. Marguerite: This is it? This is what? [Challenger throws his torch at the dinosaur. Everyone else is backed against the cave wall] Challenger: Aim for its eyes his most vulnerable point. Veronica: I’m sorry I got you into this Ned. Malone: I volunteered. Marguerite: Roxton? Roxton: Yes? Whatever it is I’d say it quickly. [Summerlee leans against a wall that starts to move.] Veronica: Push Challenger: Daylight [They get out of the cave and close the opening] Veronica: Close it – close it! Summerlee: A door in a cave? [The group is startled by a voice coming from atop the cliff] Kirin: Greetings friends welcome to paradise [They see a village down below] [Fade Out] [Scene: Kirin leads the group into his village. Harp music is being played.] Kirin: You’ve arrived at an auspicious time - our annual harvest festival Veronica: My parents are they here? [Veronica shows Kirin the locket.] Kirin: A handsome couple I would have remembered them. Malone: No one named Sinta? Kirin: I’m sorry. Malone: Someone else here might remember. You don’t mind if we look around? Summerlee: How delightful you know this place is absolutely. I mean the gardens alone. I’m utterly speechless. Challenger: In which case this must be paradise. Summerlee: Perhaps only for some. [Summerlee and Kirin walk over to a dying plant] Kirin: I’ve been trying to graft some cuttings, as you can see, without much success. Summerlee: Well the yellowing could be a lack of iron or perhaps a nitrogen deficiency. Kirin: A botanist - could I be so lucky. Summerlee: Well I do have a certain reputation in some circles. Challenger: Come now Summerlee modesty doesn’t become you. I don’t recognize the genus. Kirin: It’s quite rare. In fact these cuttings are from the only plant left of its kind. Summerlee: It might help if I can see the host plant. Kirin: In time professor - in time. [Roxton and Marguerite are walking. Roxton declines to drink.] Marguerite: Didn’t work up a thirst outrunning that reptile. Roxton: One of us should keep his wits about him. In case you’ve already forgotten they confiscated our weapons. Marguerite: You heard Kirin is standard practice for all visitors. Roxton: I don’t like it. We have no idea who the hell these people are. Marguerite: You’re right I’ve never seen such a threatening looking bunch. Roxton: Amazing isn’t it, almost too good to be true. Marguerite: Except? Roxton: It’s a boxed canyon; there’s no way out of here except through that cave door. Marguerite: And past our large scaly friend. Roxton: No one here seems worried about that - except me. Marguerite: And they say I’m paranoid. You really don’t trust anyone do you? Roxton: Only you my dear - only you. [Malone and Veronica are showing her locket to a man who is painting a portrait.] Veronica: It’s very important their names were Abigail and Tom. Man: No I don’t think so. Malone: Take a closer look. Veronica: Please they’re my parents; I’ve been looking for them for a very long time. [He shakes his head. They turn to the woman who is the model for the portrait.] Veronica: What about you? Woman: I wouldn’t remember. There’ve been so many. Man: Visitors - we can’t help you. Malone: Maybe we should split up we’d cover more ground. Veronica: What about Sinta or his wife Talibo? Woman: I’m sorry we’ve never heard of them. [Scene: An old woman is in a cage; she watches as young villagers open the entrance to the cave.] Old Woman: Talibo! Talibo! You were my friend. How could you let them do this to me? Talibo: Please you’re upsetting me. Old Woman: You’re killing me. Talibo: You will live on in all of us. [The old woman is carried to the cave where an old man is standing. They are thrown in and the entrance is closed. The old couple is eaten by the dinosaur. Talibo is upset by the screaming. Kirin appears behind Talibo] Kirin: Talibo, you mustn’t let yourself get upset. Talibo: But they were my friends. [Kirin hands Talibo a piece of red fruit.] Kirin: Eat [She eats the fruit and Kirin kisses her on the forehead. She smiles her friends forgotten. She walks through the village when she spots Veronica showing the locket to a woman carving a wooden statue.] Veronica: They’re my parents. What about Sinta do you know that name? Woman: No I’m sorry. Talibo [whispers]: Veronica? [Scene: Roxton is taking a look around. He comes across a cage and finds a spoon inside it. He is startled by a woman who comes up behind him.] Woman: Are you lost? Roxton: No just wandering. What’s the cage for? Woman: Sometimes the goats and sheep are locked up at night. Roxton: That path up there does that lead out of the canyon? Woman: I have no idea. Roxton: You don’t know if there’s a way out here? Woman: Who would want to leave paradise? Roxton: I see your point. [She leads him away he slips the spoon he found in his pocket.] [Scene: Marguerite is in her tent she is looking at her face in the mirror.] Kirin: Don’t you like what you see? Marguerite: So far so good - still cheating time. Kirin: Aren’t we all. You are quite lovely you know. Marguerite: I bet you say that to all the girls. Kirin: You don’t have to do that; put on that hard edge. There’s nothing to be afraid of - not here. Marguerite: Of course not – it’s paradise. Kirin: You don’t believe it. Marguerite: A friend of mine once said if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. Kirin: And what is it that sounds too good to you: A life of pleasure; the pursuit of art - beauty; to feel safe - cared for; to know that nothing can ever harm you; or to just look in the mirror and know the image you see will never wither - never fade? Marguerite: Forever? Who would I have to kill? [Talibo walks into the tent and is upset when she sees Kirin and Marguerite. She runs from the tent and Kirin follows her.] Kirin: I’m sorry. Marguerite: See I was right, I knew he said that to all the girls. [Kirin catches up to Talibo.] Kirin: What is wrong with you? You know you shouldn’t upset yourself – or me. Talibo: What were you doing with that woman? Kirin: I greet all the visitors you know that. Talibo: Like you greeted me? Kirin: Talibo tell me what’s wrong? Talibo: I saw someone I knew. Kirin: Veronica one of the newcomers. She won’t be a problem none of them will - you know that. Talibo: None of them, even that woman? Kirin I gave up everything for you - my world my husband. Kirin: You chose to live. Where is the evil in that? Calm yourself have some fruit. Talibo: No I don’t want anymore fruit. I don’t want to feel nothing not anymore. Kirin: You’ve been a wonderful lover to me. Talibo: Kirin what are you doing? Kirin: You must understand this isn’t a punishment but a blessing. Talibo: But I love you. Kirin: And your love will live on in me – forever. [Talibo is taken to the tree she is slowly pulled inside it. Malone is watching from the bushes.] Kirin: Blessed are those who sustain us. The life you give is the life we live. In your grace we find peace. In your sacrifice we find harmony. In your essence we find beauty everlasting. [Malone is captured.] Man: Greetings visitor. Kirin will want to talk with you. [Fade Out] [Scene: Nighttime the village – Challenger, Summerlee, Veronica and Marguerite are sitting at the banquet table. They are eating and drinking] Challenger: You know I always thought the English were the most civilized people on earth. Summerlee: Oh my friend we have so much to learn. Challenger: Right you are old friend. Marguerite: This place is amazing. I’ve never felt so. Veronica: At peace? Me too. If my parents had been here I could’ve understood why they never came back – well almost. Marguerite: I’m sorry I know how much you were hoping to find them. [They start laughing. Roxton approaches.] Roxton: Have you seen Malone? Marguerite: Well hello to you too. Veronica: Sit - have some. Roxton: Malone where is he? Marguerite: He’s around here somewhere. Roxton: You haven’t even noticed he was missing. Marguerite: He’s not missing. He’s just not here. [Roxton walks away from the women and passes by the men.] Summerlee: John there you are. You must have some of this wine. It’s absolutely delicious. Roxton: It looks like you’ve had enough for the both of us. Have you seen Malone? Challenger: Malone no but I hope he doesn’t miss dinner. Roxton: Have you all gone completely around the bend? Challenger: Come now John I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about. I mean what could happen to him here? Roxton: Ahh yes of course paradise. I found a cage at the foot of the mountain they told me it was used to keep animals at night. Summerlee: So what’s wrong with that? Roxton: You tell me what kind of animal uses a spoon. Summerlee: A spoon a spoon. Challenger: A spoon. [Scene: Kirin’s tent - Malone is tied up sitting on the ground watched by guards. Kirin enters.] Kirin: Well done. Malone: Is this standard issue for paradise? Kirin: It’s for your own protection. Malone: Really well you’re killing me with kindness. Kirin: I’ve tried to spare you unnecessary worry. Malone: Too late - do you want to tell me what the hell I saw out there? Kirin: A miracle. Malone: Not for Sinta and Talibo. Kirin: Unfortunate but necessary. Malone: Cut the double talk what the hell is going on here? Kirin: The fruit feeds us keeps us immortal – serene. Malone: Sedated. It feeds you and you feed it. That’s what happened to Talibo. Kirin: She will live on in all of us forever. Malone: You son of a bitch. Kirin: Anger, remorse - they counteract the serenity of the fruit. Negative emotions have no place in eternity. Malone: And all you have to sacrifice is your humanity. Kirin: We’ve spent a thousand years creating the perfect society – grace - harmony. Malone: And a little murder thrown in. Kirin: I wouldn’t expect you to understand the honor you’re being given. Malone: Honor what honor? Kirin: In harvest time the tree feeds every twelve hours tomorrow morning your spirit will become part of us forever. You’re of its next meal. [Scene: Roxton is walking by a tent looks inside for Malone but finds Marguerite.] Roxton: Malone? Marguerite: You might have knocked. Roxton: I’m still looking for Malone. Marguerite: Why? Roxton: Because I haven’t found him yet. Marguerite: No I mean why do you care? He’s a big boy he’s not your responsibility. Roxton: You’re all my responsibility. Marguerite: Everyone - even me? Roxton: What’s wrong with you? Marguerite: Nothing’s wrong. For the first time in my life nothing at all is wrong. [Roxton and Marguerite kiss] Roxton: You’ve had too much wine. Marguerite: It’s not the wine John or maybe it is, but for the first time I see everything so clearly. I see you I see myself. Please don’t make me be who I was. Just let me be who I am. Please John, just for tonight. [They kiss] Roxton: Malone Marguerite: He can take care of himself. [Ode to joy is played faintly on a harp. Roxton is distracted by the tune.] Marguerite: What? Roxton: Ode to Joy [Marguerite turns his face towards her he gives her a quick kiss] Roxton: Later. Marguerite: Later? What do you mean later? Roxton I opened my heart to you! Nobody walks out on me. [Roxton walks toward the music; a woman is playing a harp.] Roxton: Where did you learn that? Woman: It’s beautiful isn’t it? [Roxton grabs her arm.] Roxton: Who taught you? Woman: Let go of me. Roxton: Was it Sinta; or was it Veronica’s parents? Woman: You’re upsetting me. Roxton: Kirin said he’d never heard of them, but that can’t be can it. How else would you know Beethoven? [A man comes up behind Roxton.] Man: You’re upsetting the lady. Roxton: I’m sorry my mistake. [Roxton punches the man in the gut then Roxton is knocked out from behind.] [Scene: Morning in the village] Summerlee: Strange thing this place seems to have cured my arthritis. Challenger: I have this overwhelming sense of well being. Summerlee: Breakfast for the lady? Marguerite: I lost my appetite last night. Challenger: Where’s Roxton? Marguerite: Who gives a damn? Challenger: Malone must be with him. Marguerite: Is Malone still missing? Veronica: He’s not missing Marguerite; he’s just not here. Marguerite: Are you feeling all right? Veronica: I’ve never felt more wonderful in my life. Kirin: Good that’s just the way I planned it. Challenger: You’re quite the host I’ll give you that. Kirin: Marguerite didn't you sleep well; perhaps if you had something to eat? Marguerite: I’m fine. Summerlee: Kirin I had some thoughts about that plant you’re trying to propagate. Kirin: Excellent - let’s talk about your ideas later. Right now I’m needed elsewhere excuse me. I think you’ll feel much better after you eat. Summerlee: Nice chap really. Challenger: Yes indeed great fellow. Marguerite: Anyone feel like a field trip? [Scene: The villagers are gathering by the tree.] Kirin: Blessed are those who sustain us. The life you give is the life we live. In your grace we find peace. In your sacrifice we find harmony. [The others see Malone in the tree; getting slowly sucked in.] Malone: Run get out of here! Challenger: Malone [They run toward him but are stopped by the villagers.] Challenger: What is the meaning of this? Kirin: In your essence we find beauty everlasting. Summerlee: Dear Lord look - the tree it’s feeding. [Malone is sucked into the tree. The villagers kneel before the tree.] Kirin: It’s the natural order. The weak feed the strong. Challenger: We are not cattle. Kirin: Aren’t you? Marguerite: Malone [Malone reappears from the tree he is an old man] [Fade Out] [Scene: The others are taken to where Roxton is being held in a cage.] Roxton: I thought you’d never get here. Challenger: Frankly we couldn’t stay away. [They are led into the cage but Kirin speaks to Marguerite] Kirin: Wait! Remember our conversation? There’s a place for you buy my side. Summerlee: You don’t really believe that any of us would join you. Kirin: A life of pleasure; beautiful forever – Marguerite. Marguerite: Forever? [The cage opens to let Marguerite out] Summerlee: Marguerite don’t do it - don’t go. How could she? Roxton: Nature of the beast. [Scene: Kirin’s tent Marguerite is now dressed like the other villagers] Kirin: Marguerite welcome to eternity. You look magnificent, like you belong. Marguerite: About my friends. Kirin: Your friends will always be a part of you. Marguerite: Yes I know it just seems wrong somehow - eating them. Kirin: Marguerite there is no room for doubt, not anymore. The food not only gives us life and strength; it gives us serenity as well. Negative emotions destroy that gift. I can’t have you infecting the others with fear and guilt. Marguerite: Don’t worry about me. I’ve never had any trouble with my conscience. Kirin: Good [Marguerite and Kirin kiss. She knifes him in the back.] Kirin: I offered you immortality. [Kirin falls over dead] Marguerite: I’m a little choosy about who I spend eternity with. [Marguerite grabs a gun] Time for a little trouble in paradise [As Marguerite is leaving the tent she runs into a woman.] Marguerite: Lovely day today. Woman: Greetings sister. Marguerite: Can I help you with something. Woman: Is Kirin in? Marguerite: He’s resting sorry. Woman: I see. I know what you’re hiding. Marguerite: You do? Woman: Jealousy is an emotion not worthy of eternity. Marguerite: You see right through me. Woman: You’re new here so I won’t report you - this time. [Scene: The cage] Roxton: I always thought I’d end up in the belly of a beast. I just figured it’d be one that roared. Summerlee: Technically the tree doesn’t eat you just drains your life essences. Challenger: Perhaps the damn thing will eat you first and get indigestion. Veronica: This is all my fault. Roxton: Save your tears; we’re not dead yet. Marguerite: Yoo-hoo [Marguerite approaches the man guarding the cage] Kirin wants the old guy brought to his tent. Seems he’s a botanist; Kirin needs his help to grow more blessed little trees. Summerlee: My dear Miss Krux, you can assure Kirin that I shall do absolutely nothing to help him propagate that monstrosity! Marguerite: Perhaps you should assure him yourself Professor. Challenger: Yes Arthur you should go. [The guard turns to open the cage. Marguerite hits him over the head. She gives Challenger a gun and unlocks the cage.] Challenger: Welcome back Miss Krux. Roxton: Where’s Kirin? Marguerite: Gone to a warmer climate. Veronica: We have to get Ned and get out of here. [Challenger and Roxton lift the guard and put him in the cage. Marguerite hands Roxton an axe.] Summerlee: There’s something we have to do first. We cut the root then the tree will starve! Roxton: Get Malone - don’t use your gun unless you have to. Challenger: I’ll make every one count. [A man runs down the path. Veronica intercepts him and after a tussle knockes him out. Roxton is hacking at the root of the tree. Challenger finds Malone locked up in a cage. He takes a rock and breaks the lock. A man runs to Challenger and then notices Roxton.] Man: What are you doing? Get away from there. Challenger: No you don’t [Challenger stops the man and they fight. Summerlee goes to Malone.] Summerlee: Don’t try to stand there take it easy. [The man is kicking Challenger who is on the ground. Challenger kicks the man and he falls to the ground. Challenger gets up and when the man tries to stand Challenger punches him. Marguerite goes over to Roxton, still hacking at the root, and begins to pull some of the fruit off the tree.] Roxton: Are you out of your mind? Marguerite: It’s not for me it’s for Malone. [Veronica joins Roxton in slicing up the root. Challenger is still fighting the man. Marguerite goes to Malone and gives him the fruit.] Marguerite: Here have some of this. [Malone eats the fruit. The man pushes Challenger and lunges for Roxton getting him in a neck vice. Challenger shoots the man in the back.] Roxton: Perfect timing. [Malone eats the turns back into his young self.] Marguerite: Please - it’s working. [Blood is coming from the root of the tree.] Roxton: I think we’re done. [As the villagers run to the base of the tree in a panic the explorers make their escape.] Marguerite: Kirin still has the rest of our guns in his tent. Challenger: Can you make it? Malone: I feel like a new man. Challenger: Let’s go. Veronica: But we’re still trapped. Summerlee: She’s right - the beast in the cave. Roxton: I’ve found another way there’s a path heading over the mountains Summerlee: This is total madness. Malone: Everyone’s going crazy. [The fruit on the tree begins to rot. The villagers are trying to gather up all the fruit they can; knocking each other over. It’s total chaos. The explorers make their way up the path around the mountain] Malone: It’s alright I’ve got you Professor just don’t look down. Marguerite: To hell with paradise. [Epilogue] [Scene: The treehouse - the group are toasting Marguerite] All: Hip hip hurrah! Hip hip hurrah! Hip hip hurrah! Marguerite: I only did what any of you would have done. Summerlee: I’m so sorry we didn’t find your parents my dear. Veronica: I’m not – to have found them in that horrible place? It would’ve been worse than not finding the at all. Malone: We’ll keep trying. Summerlee: It’s a pity we didn’t think it take some of that fruit with us. Challenger: Imagine what science could have done with it; a cure for cancer perhaps - or even death. Marguerite: After what we saw I’d say eternity was overrated. [Marguerite leaves the others to go to the balcony. Roxton appears.] Roxton: Why have you been avoiding me? Ever since we got back. Marguerite: Oh you know me busy busy busy. Roxton: Look about the other night. Marguerite: It must have been the fruit; clearly I was out of my head. You and me - that’s a disaster waiting to happen. [Marguerite walks by him and goes to her room. She looks in the mirror; reveals a hidden piece of fruit then takes a bite.] End of episode
