[Scene: Marguerite, Roxton and Challenger are flying over a clearing in the
balloon.]

Marguerite: We’ve been up here for hours. If you ask me, the only thing
we’re going to find is more nothing.

Challenger: You call all this nothing?

Marguerite: Wake me when you see a door with an exit sign.

Challenger: Come on woman, where’s your sense of wonder?

Marguerite: Back at the treehouse on that second glass of wine.

Roxton: We’re losing light Challenger; best land and make camp.

Marguerite: Nobody said anything about camping.

Roxton: I was saving it - for a surprise.

[Scene: Balloon landed Roxton is tying it off. Challenger is unloading,
handing things off to Marguerite.]

Roxton: There we go. Take a damn hurricane to pry it loose.

Marguerite: Alright, alright I’m not a pack mule.

Challenger: Just a few more things.

Marguerite: How ‘bout a hand?

Roxton: Ah yes of course

[Roxton piles even more things into Marguerite arms.]

Roxton: I’ll go get the firewood.

Marguerite: That does it.

[Marguerite drops all the things in her arms on the ground. Roxton is
collecting firewood a man sneaks up behind him. He makes a noise Roxton
spins around.]

Roxton: That’s far enough.

[The man collapses. Roxton checks for a pulse. The man attacks and bites
Roxton on the neck. Roxton pushes him off but the man grabs Roxton’s
pistol. Before he can shoot Roxton, Challenger shoots the man.]

Challenger: Timing is everything.

Roxton: Last time I play Good Samaritan.

Challenger: You alright?

Roxton: Son of a bitch tried to bite me. Can you believe that?

Challenger: As a matter of fact I can. [Challenger pulls away Roxton’s
collar and sees the bite marks] We’d better get you back to camp and get
that cleaned out.

Roxton: I’m fine.

[Roxton touches his neck with his finger then licks the blood off.]

Roxton: I’m fine.

[Marguerite, Roxton and Challenger are putting stones over the man’s grave.]

Marguerite: Remind me again why I’m helping burying someone you shot.

Challenger: Predators - they smell a decaying body next they smell us.

Roxton: So unless you’d like a little company tonight.

Marguerite: Not even in your dreams.

Challenger: Almost done, just a few more Marguerite.

Marguerite: Predators - if you ask me we buried the only predator for miles
around.

[Marguerite goes to gather more stones but is startled when she sees a dead
tiger in the bushes. The men come to see what startled her.]

Challenger: What is it?

Roxton: Speak up.

Challenger: Interesting, there appear to be bite marks on the neck of the
animal.

Marguerite: Must be something in the air tonight.

Roxton: Those are teeth marks.

Challenger: That’s peculiar, there’s no blood - there’s no blood anywhere.

Roxton: Drained of blood.

Marguerite: Oh wonderful! Well it’s obvious the dead guy was a vampire. I
was joking. I knew there was something in the air tonight.

Roxton: It’s getting late [scratches his neck] we better get back to the
burial.

[Scene: Night time - Malone and Veronica having a secluded meal along the
bank of a waterfall.]

Malone: Really I swear.

Veronica: I wonder who did it.

Malone: Incredible barbecued - what did you say it was? On second thought
maybe it’s better to live in the mystery.

Veronica: I’m glad you’re here.

Malone: You are?

Veronica: Sure – I mean all of you of course.

Malone: Of course.

Veronica: I guess I was lonely.

Malone: Someone as wonderful as you should never have to feel lonely.

[Veronica gives Malone a kiss.]

Veronica: Thank you Ned Malone just for that; you get to do the dishes.

[Veronica jumps up and takes off giggling.]

Malone: Where are you going?

Veronica: You’ll see.

Malone: You touched her face, someone as wonderful as you then I kissed
her.

[Veronica calls for Ned he goes to her and finds her clothes on the river
bank. Veronica is in the lake.]

Malone: What are you doing?

Veronica: Come on in. I’m not going to ask twice.

[Malone starts to take off his clothes.]

Malone: Hang on I’m coming - just a second, almost there.

[Niko comes from the bushes and silently observes Veronica in the lake.]

Malone: Hey Veronica that’s no fair.

[Veronica and Ned are splashing each other in the water.]

Niko: Veronica

[Veronica and Malone kiss.]

[Scene: Nighttime in camp – Challenger and Marguerite are sleeping in their
tents, Roxton is sitting outside by the campfire. He’s listening to the
sounds of the jungle. Roxton enters Marguerite’s tent and watches her
sleep. He takes the book she is holding and moves it aside. Marguerite
stirs still half asleep.]

Marguerite: Shouldn’t you be on watch?

Roxton: Shhhh not now.

[He kisses her passionately.]

Marguerite: This is a dream I’ve had before.

[Roxton slowly unbuttons her blouse.]

Marguerite: Roxton slow down.

[Roxton covers her neck in her hand. Marguerite becomes fully awake when
Roxton becomes more forceful.]

Marguerite: Roxton! Stop it. Let go of me. Stop it! Roxton!

[Challenger enters the tent and pulls Roxton off Marguerite. Roxton goes
running off into the jungle.]

Marguerite: I do tend to bring out the beast in a man.

[Scene: The treehouse - Malone walks over to Summerlee.]

Summerlee: I see we have the same problem.

Malone: I’m sorry.

Summerlee: Couldn’t sleep.

Malone: Me neither……Professor?

Summerlee: Yes

Malone: I have a situation.

Summerlee: I’m sure she’d understand.

Malone: Who?

Summerlee: You’re young lady back home what’s her name?

Malone: Gladys

Summerlee: Oh yes, lovely name Gladys; then so is Veronica.

Malone: That’s the problem I mean I love Gladys, but for all she knows I
might be dead.

Summerlee: Indeed

Malone: So it wouldn’t be like being unfaithful would it? What do you think
professor?

Summerlee: I think it’s about time for one of us to go to bed goodnight
Ned.

Malone: Thanks……for nothing.

[Veronica is sleeping, she’s dreaming about her and Ned kissing earlier in
the lake. Ned slowly turns into Niko. Niko appears beside Veronica’s bed.
He touches her cheek Veronica awakens then screams but Niko is gone. Malone
and Summerlee come running.]

Malone: Veronica? What’s wrong you’re shaking?

Veronica: I don’t know. There was someone……a man right there where you are
now.

Summerlee: There’s nobody here but us my dear, you had a nightmare.

Veronica: Dark skin, brown eyes his hand was reaching out - it seems so
real.

Summerlee: Sometimes the night can play strange tricks.

Malone:  It’s forty feet to the ground.  Hell of a jump if he was for real;
unless your mystery man can fly.

[The men leave. Niko is crouching on the roof outside Veronica’s bedroom.]

[Scene: Daytime. Roxton is running in the jungle. A raptor jumps out of
the jungle and Roxton attacks it with just a knife.]

Marguerite: All right look I’ve changed my mind I don’t care if we ever see
him again. Now can we take a break?

Challenger: Look at this we’re on the right track……this way.

Marguerite: It’s just a broken branch for all we know it could be a
stampede of bunny rabbits.

Challenger: With a size eleven boot. Oh no, it’s Roxton alright……this way.

Marguerite: Right behind you bwana.

[They walk right past Roxton who’s in the bushes drinking the blood of the
raptor he killed.]

[Scene: The treehouse.]

Veronica: I feel so foolish.

Malone: I don’t think you were foolish at all.

Veronica: I’m not usually that jumpy.

Malone: I’m glad you were. It gave me another chance to see you last
night.

[They touch hands over the table. Summerlee steps off the elevator with
Niko.]

Summerlee: Pardon my I mean our intrusion but he absolutely insisted.

Veronica: My nightmare.

Niko: I am Niko your husband.

[Niko dumps jewels from a pouch on the table.]

[Scene: Roxton running through the jungle. He comes to a clearing. He
sees a castle in the distance and sees Calista on the balcony.]

Calista: Welcome my love.

[Calista appears behind him. She kisses him.]

Roxton: Where am I?

Calista: You’ve come home.

[Fade Out]

[Scene: The treehouse.]

Malone: So you’re saying you want to buy Veronica?

Niko: It is the way of my tribe.

Malone: You’ve got to be joking.

Summerlee: We’ll actually Ned there are countries in the world, Africa for
example, where the men purchase their wives with cattle.

Malone: Yeah, but where I come from guy does something like this; gets his
head wrapped around a fire plug.

Niko: The woman Veronica is she yours?

Veronica: Excuse me! We’re not in Africa; I don’t go moo and I’m not for
sale. It’s a very flattering offer but no thank you [She gives to pouch to
Niko] and goodbye

Niko: So the woman is yours.

Malone: Yes Veronica is mine.

Veronica: Ned - don’t!

Niko: I understand [Niko gives the pouch to Malone] you will consider my
offer I will return for your answer.

Summerlee: And if he refuses?

Niko: We’ll fight to the death.

[Scene: Calista’s castle. She is pouring a drink for them both. Roxton is
looking around the room.]

Roxton: All yours?

Calista: Yes, a little bit of home right here in the jungle. You’d almost
forgotten what it could be like didn’t you?

Roxton: Yes [he eyes the drink hungrily.]

Calista: Not yet my pet. There is something to be said for anticipation.

Roxton: My chest it’s so tight. What is it?

Calista: The transformation has begun.

Roxton: What the hell’s happening to me?

Calista: You’re awakening my love. Some may say you’ve been infected with
a disease but they have no soul - no passion. It’s no disease, it’s a gift.
Tell me are you ready? Are you hungry?

[Calista gives Roxton the glass.]

Calista: Drink……more take it all.

[Roxton is in pain he screams. When he opens his eyes they are yellow.]

Roxton: Oh my god.

Calista: Or at least the next best thing - don’t be afraid accept the gift.

[Roxton looks around the room he is very in tune with every sound. Calista
throws a knife at him and he catches it before it gets to his throat.]

Roxton: Impossible

Calista: Nothing is impossible anymore see what life can be like - feel it.

Roxton: You……you did this to me.

Calista: That’s it, come on. Surrender to the hunger [Calista starts
unbuttoning Roxton’s shirt] surrender to yourself.

Roxton: Damn you [Roxton rips off Calista dress. They give into the
hunger.]

[Scene: Challenger and Marguerite are following Roxton’s trail.]

Marguerite: Could swear we’re walking around in circles.

Challenger: That’s because Roxton’s doubled back.

Marguerite: Well if he doesn’t want to be found.

Challenger: What the hell is that?

[They find the dead raptor.]

Marguerite: Are you crazy?

Challenger: It’s dead, the body’s still warm. There’s a few wound marks
made with something long and sharp.

Marguerite: A knife?

Challenger: Look at this.

Marguerite: Do I have to?

Challenger: More bite marks on the neck small but they’re still there.

Marguerite: I’ll take your word for it. What kind of a creature does that?

Challenger: Oh my god.

[They look at the footprint in the ground.]

Marguerite: Size eleven boots.

Challenger: And we know who wears those.

[Scene: The treehouse – Veronica is looking at the stones Niko brought. He
jumps down into her bedroom. She faces him with her knife drawn.]

Niko: I’m the one thing in life you need not fear. Beautiful - the first
time I saw you my heart stopped beating. There was only your face; your
smile. Even the jungle was quiet as if my love shamed the animals into
silence.

Veronica: There are a lot of women. From your own tribe even.

Niko: No you do not understand. I was a young boy, six maybe seven years
old. That was the first time I saw you.

Veronica: You saw me so many years ago?

Niko: In my dream.

Veronica: Your dream?

Niko: And a thousand others since then. Tell me you have not dreamed of
me. Our dreams are prophecy. We are meant to be together. Without you I’m
only half of myself.

Veronica: No, please leave.

[Veronica turns her back on Niko. He reaches in front of her and in his
palm produces a flower. He leaves.]

[Scene: Nighttime the balcony of Calista’s castle. Roxton is basking in
the moonlight.]

Roxton: It’s amazing. What is this feeling?

Calista: The absence of fear you belong now……to me. To the stars you’re
the tiniest particle on the farthest planet from the sun. You’re the secret
thoughts and dreams of everyone you’ve ever known or loved or lost. The
universe is yours for the taking.

Roxton: I’ll never leave you.

Calista: One day you’ll try to kill me.

Roxton: Never

Calista: An instinct eats away at your reason. It will happen; but not
today.

Roxton: You’re talking nonsense.

Calista: My father’s phrase was natural selection.

Roxton: Your father, where’s your family now?

[She touches his arm.]

Calista: Right in there. My father was bitten by a feral beast and that
night he killed mother and our four men. He fed on me. He couldn’t bring
himself to kill me; his love was that strong. The following night his
hunger was stronger.

Roxton: But you’re still alive.

Calista: Of course, by then I was hungry too; as I said natural selection.

[They kiss Roxton stops and sniffs the air.]

Roxton: What’s that?

[She sees Marguerite and Challenger walking in the clearing.]

Calista: Fresh blood my love……fresh blood.

[Fade Out]

[Scene: Calista’s castle.]

Calista: Two of them - one for each of us; are you sure you’re ready.

Roxton: I’m ready. I’ll go first - alone.

Calista: There’s no turning back.

Roxton: They’re my friends, they’ll trust me.

Calista: All right my love but hurry, I’m hungry.

Marguerite: Tell me you see what I see. Who in the hell would build that
in the middle of the jungle?

Challenger: Shhh

Malone: I beg your pardon?

Challenger: Quiet woman someone’s coming.

[Roxton runs up to them in the fog.]

Challenger: Roxton

Marguerite: It’s about time.

Roxton: Run! Run damn you!

Challenger: Take it easy old man.

Roxton: Are you deaf? Run!

[Marguerite pulls on Challenger arm.]

Marguerite: Come on.

Challenger: We can’t leave him.

Marguerite: We know where he is; we’ll be back.

[Marguerite and Challenger run away.]

[Scene: The treehouse]

Veronica: This is ridiculous

Malone: I don’t think there’s much doubt about that.

Veronica: You can’t fight Niko.

Malone: Who then Summerlee…you?

Veronica: Why not? Did I ask for your protection?

Malone: You didn’t have to.

Veronica: I don’t need a hero.

Malone: Either I fight him or he takes you as his bride. I don’t see any
other option.

Veronica: Maybe I do.

[Scene: Calista’s castle. Calista slaps Roxton.]

Calista: You send them away?

[She tries to slap Roxton again but he grabs her arm.]

Roxton: Don’t you ever do that again.

Calista: I should let you die. But I have grown so attached to you
already.

Roxton: Marguerite…Challenger - they’re my friends.

Calista: You only have one friend now my love. See the way your chest is
heaving; feel your blood on fire? How long has it been since you fed?

Roxton: Come to me.

Calista: Patients

Roxton: Now! [Calista points a cross bow at Roxton] What the hell are you
doing?

Calista: Eliminating your confusion.

Roxton: Put it down.

Calista: Don’t test me. I’ll only disappoint you. You let your friends
escape because you weren’t hungry enough. Soon your cravings will become
ravings; your desire madness. Soon you will do anything to eat.

[Scene: Daylight Roxton is tracking food. He sees a deer but is
interrupted by Challenger’s voice in the distance.]

Challenger: I’ve never seen anything like it.

Marguerite: Did you see Roxton’s face - skin - eyes.

Challenger: Most be a fever some kind of disease.

Marguerite: What?

Challenger: Let’s say that poor man that attack Roxton passed on a germ a
contagion.

Marguerite: One rabid animal infecting another.

Challenger:  And it’s infected his mind.  Sweating; labored breathing;
oxygen deprivation of the blood.

Marguerite: That’s a lovely theory but meanwhile what happens if he goes
for our throats.

[Roxton jumps out of the jungle and attacks Challenger.]

Challenger: Roxton it’s me Challenger!

[Roxton throws Challenger across the clearing. He goes in for the kill.
Marguerite aims the rifle at him and he starts walking toward her.]

Marguerite: Roxton! Come on now. I never thought I’d say this but I don’t
want to shoot you. [Roxton steps closer] Please John! [Marguerite fires
the rifle off to the side. Challenger hits Roxton over the head with a rock
from behind] Thank you.

Challenger: Your aim was rather wide of the market my dear.

Marguerite: I guess my heart wasn’t in it. What do we do with him now?

Challenger: We have no choice we have to poison him.

Marguerite: What?

[Scene: The treehouse - Veronica leaves down the elevator she is packed]

[Scene: The jungle - Roxton is unconscious face down on the ground]

Marguerite: Once more please, we poison Roxton to cure him?

Challenger: The infection is destroying his red blood cells. We attack it
the same way as we attack cancer. We toxify his blood and the bacteria
can’t survive.

Marguerite: Remind me never to get sick around you.

[Scene: Veronica is walking away from the treehouse. Niko appears in front
of her and will not let her pass. Malone catches up to her.]

Niko: Where are you going?

Veronica: All right let’s get this over with.

[Veronica pulls her knife.]

Malone: It’s not your fight – it’s mine.

[Fade Out]

[Scene: Roxton is unconscious lying on the ground Marguerite beside him.
Challenger is returning from gathering the poison.]

Challenger: I noticed these within the last few miles. Belladonna

Marguerite: Beautiful lady.

Challenger: So called because Italian women used to apply it to their eyes.
  Dilated pupils were considered attractive.

Marguerite: Let’s hear it for the good old days.

Challenger: So we crush the berries and feed the juice to our friend.

Marguerite: And then what?

Challenger: Then we pray.

[Scene: Niko confronts Malone.]

Niko: I do not want to kill you.

Malone: Well that makes two of us.

Niko: Then sell me your woman.

Veronica: I’m not his woman! Ned - please stop.

Malone: Stand aside you might get hurt.

[Niko and Malone fight.]

Veronica: Stop it! Both of you stop it now!

[They ignore her and continue fighting.]

[Scene: Roxton still unconscious.]

Challenger: Keep him cool.

[Roxton starts to convulse.]

Marguerite: It’s a fine line between curing him and killing him.

Challenger: He’s purging the blood is fighting the poison.

[Roxton lies still]

Marguerite: Oh my god is he? [Challenger checks Roxton’s eyes they are
blood red] What now?

Challenger: We won’t know for a few hours ‘till he wakes.

Marguerite: You mean if he wakes.

[Scene: Niko and Malone fighting.]

Veronica: Ned! Niko! [Veronica has her knife pulled she is ready to
commit hari-kari. The men stop fighting] Please nobody dies for me.

Malone: Veronica, what the hell are you doing?

Veronica: Ending this.

Niko: Put down the knife.

Veronica: You can fight over my corpse.

Malone: Veronica please - don’t.

Veronica: Will you stop?

Niko: This is a trick. She will not do it.

Veronica: Goodbye Ned.

[Veronica plunges the knife but the men grab her arms and stop her.]

Veronica: Why - why is my life anymore valuable that yours?

Niko: You would do it.

Veronica: Yes

Niko: Deny the prophecy; deny our hearts.

Veronica: It was just a dream. [Veronica hands Niko back his jewels] These
are yours.

Niko: You may leave my life Veronica, but you will never leave my dreams.

Veronica: Safe journey Niko.

Niko: Be worthy of her.

[Niko leaves]

Veronica: Let’s get this straight - I’m not his; I’m not yours.

[Scene: The vigil over Roxton continues.]

Marguerite: We were crazy.

Challenger: We were desperate.

Marguerite: What right did we have to gamble with his life?

Challenger: The Roxton we knew was dead. The thing that he turned into
would have killed us and gone on killing. At least we gave him a chance.

[Roxton awakes]

Marguerite: Roxton!

Challenger: The fever’s broken.

Marguerite: Thank God.

Challenger: I think he’s going to be all right.

Marguerite: Welcome back.

Roxton: Oh my god, what have you done?

Challenger: He’s disoriented it’s probably the side effects of the poison.

Marguerite: Easy

Challenger: Take it easy old man; we’ve gotta get you back to the balloon.

Roxton: No not yet.

[The three walk back to Calista’s castle. Challenger is up ahead; Roxton
and Marguerite are walking together.]

Marguerite: You know for someone who was just brought back from the living
dead you don’t seem very happy.

Roxton: I could hear the wind as it crested the mountains a hundred miles
away. I could feel the tiny heartbeat of a bird on the wing. And when I
looked at the stars… forget it.

Marguerite: No go on - please.

Roxton: Suddenly I knew all the answers. I could see the plan of it all I
belonged. I was home do you have any idea what that feels like? Challenger
wait! I’ll go alone.

Challenger: You sure?

Roxton: It’s better this way.

[Roxton walks toward the castle.]

Challenger: Do you think he knows what it’s doing?

[Roxton enters the castle.]

Roxton: Calista! Calista!

Calista: You’ve left me I can feel it.

Roxton: Feeding on human flesh.

Calista: We are so much more than human come back to me.

Roxton: I can’t.

Calista: When have you ever felt more alive more powerful more at peace?

Roxton: Calista my friends can help you; cure you of the infection like
they cured me.

Calista: I am pure life all you are now is a slow death; but not for long.

[Calista grabs Roxton’s throat. Roxton cuts her with a knife, she runs to
the second floor. He finds her standing on the balcony.]

Roxton: I don’t want to kill you.

Calista: You won’t.

[She points a gun at him.]

Roxton: Calista – It doesn’t have to be this way.

Calista: I’m afraid it does, but at least I’ll have you to feed on one last
time. [Before she can shoot Roxton she is shot by Marguerite who is standing
outside on the ground] You may fool them but you can’t fool yourself. You
know I was right.

[Calista falls over the balcony to the ground; she dissipates.]

[Epilogue]

[Scene: The camp]

Marguerite: Right where we left it.

Challenger: We’ll camp overnight and leave first thing in the morning.
Marguerite would you light the fire; Roxton can you give a hand with the
balloon?

[Roxton doesn’t hear Challenger.]

Challenger: Look at him does he seem different to you?

Marguerite: Not anymore – now he just seems like the rest of us. He’ll be
fine.

Challenger: I wish I had your confidence.

Marguerite: That’s one thing Roxton understands is how to survive.
