TEASER
INTERIOR - SECTION / COMMON AREA

The start of the Teaser is choreographed to Garbage's "Number One Crush." Both Michael and Nikita enter the Common Area from Comm. They arrive together, but enter the large room through different doors, giving the impression they entered independently of each other. Operations is standing, facing them, in front of the briefing table. Another man is standing in front of Operations with his back to the approaching Operatives. He is standing motionless, staring straight ahead. As Michael and Nikita near the two men they realize who the other man is - David Fanning. Operations is watching both their reactions intently. Michael's expression is, of course, blank, but Nikita's face shows stunned surprise. As she approaches the two men Nikita mentally flashes on past scenes of Fanning's abuse of his wife, Lisa. While Michael stops when he reaches them, Nikita continues to circle Fanning and Operations, making no attempt to hide her hostility.

[N] David Fanning. ... I thought he was dead.

[DF] (SMALL CYNICAL SMILE) Sorry to disappoint you.

Even though Michael's face shows nothing, it is obvious that Michael is just as unhappy Fanning is alive as Nikita. They both turn to face Operations, waiting for an explanation.

[O] We decided to keep him alive. He's Section material.

[N] What's he doing here?

[O] He's going on a Mission with you.

Nikita finds this darkly amusing.

[N] Really? ... A psychotic killer and a sadistic wife beater ...

[O] Most Operatives start out flawed ..., in one way or another.

[Operations' tone seems to infer he considers Nikita's 'flaws' more glaring than Fannings.'] Nikita walks over to stand next to Operations, her back to Fanning, as if she hates to even look at the man. She gives Operations one compelling glare, before staring over his shoulder as she speaks.

[N] (UNDERTONE) I don't like him; I don't trust him; and I sure as hell don't want to work with him.

[O] I know you have a history ..., but you have to put that behind you and concentrate on the Mission.

[N] It's not just history! Michael seduced his wife. I betrayed him to Section. He won't rest until we're dead.

Operations stares intently at Nikita a moment before turning his gaze to Fanning.

[O] Then he'll die, too.

[N] (SIGHS) He won't care ..., as long as we're dead first.

During Nikita's confrontation with Operations, Michael has stood silent studying their small group.

[O] On the contrary ..., our assessment indicates he has a very strong will to live. ... The Mission requires that the three of you .. work .. together.

Nikita turns to leave, when Fanning speaks out.

[DF] May I say something?

This stops Nikita, but she doesn't turn around as Operations responds.

[O] Go ahead.

[DF] Regarding the past ..., As far as I'm concerned everyone ... was just doing their job.

Fanning's words might be saying one thing, but his thoughts show something quite different. Past scenes of his beating at Nikita's hand are intercut into the scene.

[DF] And, as for the present ..., I have no hard feelings. I just want to stay alive.

Nikita turns and meets Fanning gaze.

[N] (CAUSTIC) Really.

Fanning's expression continues to show only sincerity.

[DF] Really.

Nikita says nothing further, just stalks out of the Common Area.

SECTION / BRIEFING TABLE

Operations begins to speak as he approaches the table, briefing the Team on the upcoming Mission. Michael and Nikita (seated at opposite ends of the table) continue to study Fanning carefully. Fanning sits with his hands loosely clasped in front of his face, seemingly oblivious of their scrutiny.

[O] Nikolai Kusco ..., former head of the Rumanian secret police.

Operations pulls up a Blue Screen of Kusco.

[O] After the Cold War, he dropped out of sight to form his own highly trained mercenary unit. He's been involved in fifty terrorist incidents in the last three years. Recent Intel has given us a location in Western Moldova.

Operations changes the Blue Screen to show the region in Moldova he's addressing.

[O] This .. picturesque part of the forest is actually a mobile camp occupied by Kusco's .. private army. An assault is out of the question ..., so we've developed an alternative. ... That's where Mr. Fanning comes in.

Fanning shares with the rest of the Team the reason Operations has brought him into the Mission.

[DF] I did a number of jobs for Kusco before I came to Section. He has no reason not to trust me.

[O] He'll arrange a meeting ..., which we'll use as an opportunity to terminate Kusco ... and his entire organization.

Operations drops the Blue Screen remote back on the table as he concludes the briefing.

[O] You'll get further details from Michael. That's all.

Operations leaves and Michael picks up the briefing.

[M] We leave tomorrow morning for Station Six, so we'll get our equipment now. Reconvene at 2:00.

The rest of the Team follow as Michael stands and walks over to the entrance to Weapons, where Walter has laid out the requisitioned equipment on tables. Walter hands Michael a PDA listing the inventory drawn for the Mission.

[W] Check it out.

Nikita is standing next to Michael checking one of the guns when she notices Fanning has started looking over the supplies with the other Team members.

[N] No weapons for him, Walter.

Walter stares at Fanning's back as he answers Nikita.

[W] Yeah, I heard.

[Walter's tone makes me wonder what he heard! The length of Walter's time at Section probably has given him gossip sources that would make the CIA envious.] Fanning turns so that he's looking at Michael and Nikita. Both act as if he's invisible.

[DF] You know, I think you guys have me pegged all wrong. It's not like I'm into revenge. So what, if Michael ... gave my wife some physical pleasure.

Michael briefly looks up before returning his gaze back to the PDA.

[DF] I wasn't a hundred percent faithful, right?

Nikita darts a look at Fanning, before gazing back down at the gun she's checking. Neither acknowledge they are listening to Fanning - who continues to speak. The only individual who is not pretending to ignore Fanning is Walter (who is 'all ears'). However, Fanning knows he has 'everyone's' attention and brings up a more 'sensitive' issue.

[DF] I must say, however, I am envious of the fact that ...

Fanning now moves closer to Michael and Nikita. He's wearing his 'too sincere for words' expression, which means he's about to stir up matters.

[DF] ... you two .. can carry on a relationship while you work together. ... I think that's great.

Michael's eyes don't move from the PDA, but he now quietly issues Fanning a warning.

[M] Drop it, Fanning.

In the background you hear Nikita chamber a clip into the gun she's holding. Fanning ignores them and continues along the same line of conversation.

[DF] Why? Is that a touchy subject? (CLEARS THROAT) I just think its admirable the way to two pull it off.

Fanning now moves to stand directly behind Michael.

[DF] In fact, there's a question that .. I've been wanting to ask you, Michael, for a long time. It's kind of a .. personal question, but seeing as how you've slept with my wife, I guess we've got a lot in common and you won't mind my asking it. ...

Michael doesn't turn to face Fanning, but looks up from the PDA.

[DF] When you guys go on Missions, or are on Standby .., how often do ya .. have sex?

Nikita's face has a fed up look as she drops the gun she was holding back onto the table. Michael's expression remains blank, but he turns and issues a final warning.

[M] I said drop it.

Fanning wears a fake repentant expression on his face as he apologizes.

[DF] I'm sorry, I'm over the line. (CLEARS THROAT) Well, I'll see you guys on the Mission.

Fanning has said all he wanted - informed Nikita and Michael he's aware of their 'secret.' He now shows his survival skills by beating a retreat. As Fanning saunters away, Nikita watches him go.

[In the background you see Walter watching Fanning leave as well. His expression seems to say "... well, it seems the worst kept secret in this place is finally out in the open."] Nikita moves to stand next to Michael, who has returned to studying the data on the PDA screen. This next conversation is held in low voices, so the other Operatives still surrounding them can't hear what they are saying

[N] I don't believe that he does not care about revenge. ... We have to do something, Michael.

Michael doesn't look up, but responds to Nikita's comment.

[M] It's already been taken care of. ... Heyman ...

Nikita glances behind her at Heyman who is inspecting some equipment.

[M] ... He'll come along as Comm Op. His real function is to watch Fanning.

[N] Watch him?

Michael now looks up and meets Nikita's eyes.

[M] At the first sign of trouble he's authorized to cancel him.

That said, Michael returns his attention to the PDA.

[N] (PENSIVE) Well, that's better than nothing.

Nikita watches Michael for a moment before leaning closer to make one more comment.

[N] I just hope it's enough.

With that she turns her head in the direction Fanning had left.

PICTURESQUE PART OF MOLDOVA
EXTERIOR - SECTION BASE CAMP - NIGHT

Heyman finishes aligning the parameter security lasers and turns them on. Michael has been standing apart, but now joins the rest of the Team to brief them on the Mission parameters. The other Team Operatives are sitting and standing in a small circle - except Fanning who is leaning against a tree, his back to the group. There are no camp fires, just low shielded lights placed around the base that give the camp an eery glow.

[H] (TO MICHAEL) We're clear on the perimeter.

[M] The meet is twenty kilometers due East, at nine thirty.

[H] Fanning's going alone?

Nikita's expression shows this is the first she's heard of this Intel.

[M] Kusco insisted.

[N] What if he doesn't come back?

Nikita stares at Fanning as she brings up a concern. Fanning acts as if he didn't hear her.

[M] He'll come back. ... Kusco's surveillance is sophisticated, from now on we maintain radio silence.

The Team briefed, Michael walks away. Fanning takes this opportunity to 'share' with the others.

[DF] (CHALLENGING TONE) I've got to take a leak. (CLEARS THROAT) Is that all right?

Nikita turns and looks at him.

[N] It's okay if I say it is.

Fanning leans against a tree and turns away, so the others can't see how much he hates having to take orders from a woman. However, his tone gives him away when he 'asks permission.'

[DF] Request permission to take a leak.

Nikita doesn't look at Fanning when she answers his request.

[N] Permission denied.

Nikita makes it perfectly clear that she doesn't want Fanning going anywhere alone.

SECTION BASE CAMP - DAY

It is early morning. The camp has been packed up (the morning light shows the camp was situated on a small rise), confirming the Mission will be concluded that day. Heyman escorts Fanning over to Michael. Michael is standing near Nikita, who is sitting with her back to a tree facing away from Fanning.

[I liked how both Michael and Nikita openly watched each other's back. Up to this Mission their protection of the other has always been understated. However, on this Mission they wanted Fanning to know he would have to take them both on. Unfortunately, that's exactly what Fanning was counting on - their mutual preoccupation to keep the other safe] As Fanning reaches Michael, he holds his ungloved right hand out to Michael.

[DF] How much contact is needed? Michael is holding a small cylindrical bottle, which he uses to coat Fanning's palm.

[M] A handshake is enough to tag him.

Fanning stares down at his hand, then looks back up at Michael, his next question indicating he knows what kind of liquid Michael coated his palm with.

[DF] Well, that's pretty strong stuff.

[M] The isotope will do limited damage as long as an extracting agent is applied within twelve hours. You should be back by then.

[DF] And what if I'm not?

Michael unemotionally recites what continued exposure to the isotope will do.

[M] The skin peels off your hand. Three hours later, you lose the feeling in your arm. Six hours after that, you're dead. ... Good luck.

[God, I LOVED Michael's "good luck." It was so ... Michael.] For a brief moment, Fanning's face seems to show a trace of panic, before he controls himself and leaves to meet with Kusco. His exit route has him walking around the tree Nikita is leaning against and giving her a swift, speaking look before he heads down the hill.

EXTERIOR - LOGGING ROAD IN FOREST

Fanning walks out of the forest and stands by the side of an intersection of what looks like two logging roads. Almost immediately an all terrain vehicle appears at one end of the road. Fanning turns and sees another one approaching from the opposite direction. Finally, a rover appears on second road and stops at the intersection. A man, Kusco, sunglassed and in a leather coat emerges and joins Fanning. They stand for a minute talking, then seal their deal with a handshake - which also tags Kusco with the isotope.

EXTERIOR - SECTION BASE CAMP

Michael hands Fanning a tin containing the extracting agent. As Fanning stands next to a padded vest hung on a nearby tree and coats his exposed hand with the agent, Michael debriefs him on his conversation with Kusco.

[M] What job did he offer you?

[DF] He offered me a hit in Brussels, and one in Russia.

[M] And what did you say?

[DF] I took the one in Brussels.

[M] Why?

[DF] Because it pays more and is consistent with my cover story.

[M] Good.

As Michael turns to walk away, Fanning stops him with a question.

[DF] (WORRIED) Hey, does this stuff work?

Michael stops, his back still to Fanning, and answers the question.

[M] It works.

[DF] Any damage?

Michael briefly turns and looks at Fanning.

[M] Nothing permanent.

[My, our Spyboy certainly knows how to fill someone with confidence.] Michael walks away, leaving Fanning repeatedly coating his hand with the reactive agent. Nikita is standing behind a nearby tree and observed the exchange. The Team waits as Michael keys data into a targeting computer set up on a camp table. Fanning is looking off into the distance, his thoughts elsewhere, obviously uninterested in the next phase of the Mission. Heyman and Glik are standing guard while Nikita stands next to Michael, watching the computer screen.

[N] The brightest point's Kusco's hand?

The screen shows an overhead shot of Kusco looking at a map laid out on the hood of his vehicle. Kusco's hand has a bright glow to it, with lesser dots of light showing up on the map and Rover.

[M] Yes.

[N] And the others?

[M] Things he's touched.

Michael finishes coding in the targeting parameters, and looks up at Glik.

[M] Prepare to evacuate.

Glik motions for Heyman and Fanning to join him, and they leave for the Suburban. Nikita stays with Michael, watching as he finalizes the targeting sequence. When Michael walks over and readies a small missile set up on a launcher, Nikita takes over keying in data. As the others near the Suburban, Fanning (walking between Glik and Heyman) starts to lag behind Heyman. At the same time Michael and Nikita finish sequencing and launch the missile, Fanning makes his move - quickly and efficiently killing first Glik, then Hayman. The missile launched, Michael and Nikita watch it advance towards Kusco via a camera in its nose. At the last minute, Kusco and his men hear the missile approach, but only have time to turn before the missile hits its target and detonates. The computer screen goes blank and the small radar scan next to the screen registers an explosion.

[M] Let's go.

Michael closes the computer case, then turns and watches as Nikita starts to gather the remainder of the equipment left. They pack everything up and start back to join the rest of the Team, with Nikita leading. When they arrive at the Suburban, everything seems too quiet. As Nikita gets out of her backpack she studies the area, her instincts alerted to a possible problem. Nikita sees Hayman in the driver's seat (she can just see the back of his head leaning against the door) and approaches him as Michael, also vaguely uneasy, scrutinizes the area immediately behind the vehicle. Just as Nikita has dropped her gun belt and neared the driver's side, the back door flies open and Fanning, gun in hand, grabs Nikita.

[DF] Come here!

Michael immediately draws his gun and aims it at Fanning, but the other man holds his gun up to Nikita's head and uses her as a shield with the Suburban to protect his back.

[DF] Drop the gun! Drop it! ... Drop it, man!

They stand at an impasse for a minute before Michael holds his gun out with his fingers and drops it on the ground, realizing the only way to kill Fanning would endanger Nikita. Now that he has their attention, Fanning briefs them on his own Mission.

[You notice that Fanning doesn't underestimate Michael. He knows that even though Michael has dropped his gun doesn't mean he is weaponless. Section is right, Fanning has a definite instinct for survival.]

[DF] Now, we're back together again, just like told times. I'd love to chat, but I've got a Mission of my own. And you're just the man to help me with it. ... You're going to get my wife back.

[M] I haven't seen her for a while.

[DF] (SMALL LAUGH) Yeah? Well, neither have I. That's the problem.

[M] I don't even know where she is.

[DF] Find her! ... It's poetic justice. You took my woman .., you get her back. ... And if you don't ....

Fanning jabs the gun harder into Nikita's back.

[DF] ... I'm going to take yours.

Michael and Fanning study each other for a moment.

[DF] Now, you've got forty-eight hours.

Nikita doesn't say anything, but she looks at Michael and shakes her head very slightly. Michael makes no indication he's seen her request.

INTERIOR - DESERTED CABIN - DAY

Fanning kicks the door open and enters, dragging Nikita who has her hands handcuffed behind her back. He stands for a moment, studying the interior.

[DF] It's not much, but I like to call it home.

Nikita starts trying to 'reason' with Fanning.

[N] Fanning, Section's going to come after you.

Fanning drops the bag of supplies on the table and shoves Nikita to the floor in front of a stone fireplace.

[DF] Section not going to know anything about this.

Fanning kicks a chair and small table out of the way as he walks over to the fireplace.

[DF] Who's gonna tell them?

Nikita rolls over and stares up at Fanning.

[N] Michael.

Nikita watches as Fanning picks up a chain fastened to the far side of the fireplace and attaches one end of a pair of handcuffs to the chain anchored in the rock hearth

[DF] Michael?! Michael knows ... the Section doesn't bargain.

As Fanning continues to speak he walks over, leans down and connects the other end of the chain to the handcuffs restraining Nikita.

[DF] The Section'd ... just let me kill ya ..., and I don't think Michael would really want that.

That done, David straightens, walks over to the bag he had thrown on the table and starts to unpack. Nikita swivels around to watch him and continues the 'discussion.'

[N] If we don't report back they'll come after us ..., whether you want them to or not.

[DF] Yeah? ...

Fanning holds a pair a binoculars up and peers at Nikita through them.

[DF] I don't think he'd let 'em.

[N] Fanning, let's be real. How is he going to find Lisa, and bring her back here ..., and hide the death of two Operatives from Section all in the space of ... well, forty-eight hours?

Fanning puts the binoculars down on the table and slowly approaches Nikita while inspecting his nails.

[DF] Well, you know what? I think it's going to be a really .. big .. challenge. Michael will want to alive so badly ..., that I think he might just be able to pull it off.

Fanning suddenly kicks a piece of furniture next to Nikita across the room, startling her. Seeing her reaction makes Fanning give a short laugh.

[DF] (JOKING) Are you a little jumpy?

As Fanning continues to chortle, Nikita gives a brief smile, obviously not knowing what he will do next.

INTERIOR - CYBER CAFE - DAY

Birkoff enters the cafe [seen sitting at a computer next to the front window is our 'Where's Waldo' guy, Geoff Murrin] and briefly scopes the place out before approaching the cashier. [This place is chock full of LFN crew. The cashier is Rae Crombie.]

[B] I'll take .. uh .. sixty minutes.

The cashier codes a disk for the time and hands it to Birkoff, along with a glove to use with the computer game.

[B] Thanks.

Birkoff looks around the room and sits down at a nearby computer. He swipes the disk down the side, which loads the game.

---- LOADING ---

As the computer loads the game program, Birkoff puts on the game glove. [I have no idea what the game is, but it looks like it takes place in some kind of dungeon and the idea seems to be to shoot as many moving objects as you can.] As the game progresses, the top of the screen first reads "YOU GOT THE SHELLS," then "YOU RECEIVE 25 HEALTH" and "YOU GET 2 ROCKETS," while the bottom, I think, registers his hits. Birkoff has just gotten into the game when a gloved hand reaches over and stops the game. Birkoff reacts, startled, until he sees it's Michael standing next to him.

[B] (SIGHS) You scared the hell out of me!

Birkoff then remembers Michael is supposed to be on a Mission and gives him another look.

[B] What are you doing here?

[M] Mission security's been breached. Kusco's still alive.

[B] (PERPLEXED TONE) But that's impossible. Satellite Intel picked up the explosion, and our sources confirm ....

Michael just stares at Birkoff and reiterates his statement.

[M] Security's been breached. Kusco's still alive.

Birkoff meets Michael's gaze and realizes it healthier to agree with Michael.

[B] Sure. Whatever you say.

[M] Tell Operations Team's dead except for Nikita and me. We're on 'mandatory Refusal' until the Mission's complete.

Michael looks at the computer screen and makes another 'request.'

[M] Right now I need to know where Fanning's wife is. Her name is Lisa. Find her now.

Birkoff quickly looks from Michael's face to the computer screen, not believing that Michael wants him to pull up data from the game computer.

[B] These things are just toys ..., they're just for fun.

All Michael does is stare at Birkoff and say one word.

[M] Now.

Michael's expression has Birkoff mentally scrambling for a way to retrieve the data.

[B] I guess I could try rerouting a bit stream ..., piggyback onto some databases. ...

Michael moves to stand on Birkoff's other side and look over the young Tech's shoulder.

[M] Do it.

Birkoff pulls off the game glove, and exits the game.

As Birkoff works on the keyboard, Michael gives him some additional orders.

[M] You'll have to cover for me with Operations.

[B] Till when?

[M] Till I get back.

Birkoff briefly looks up at Michael, before glancing back at the screen.

[B] You can trust me.

Michael makes it clear it would be in Birkoff's best interests not to turn Michael in.

[M] (LOOKS DOWN AT BIRKOFF) If you betray me ..., I'll kill you.

This has Birkoff turning and meeting Michael's gaze.

[B] That's why you can trust me.

That said, Birkoff gets to work to get Michael his Intel. [Ahh, family life at Section.]

INTERIOR - RESTAURANT/BAR - DAY

Michael enters the bar room of an expensive restaurant. He walks over and orders.

[M] Milk.

While sipping his 'beverage,' Michael quickly scans the room. Lisa Fanning has just taken a seat in an empty restaurant. A man (hereafter "Second Bodyguard") is standing guard at the closed door to the restaurant turning away people wishing to dine.

[SB] Sorry. Private party.

[CUS] Let's go.

As diners are turned away, a large man (hereafter "First Bodyguard"), head of Lisa's security team, enters from the dining room. The First Bodyguard stands next to Michael and gives the bartender an order.

[FB] Can I get an orange juice?

[M] I need a favor.

[FB] Who the hell are you?

Michael briefly looks through the glassed door to see Lisa reading a magazine.

[M] Give your employer a message.

[FB] Why?

[M] Because she knows me.

The Bodyguard's expression seems to indicate this is not the first time he has been asked this request by a man while guarding Lisa.

[FB] (DRY) Sure she does.

[M] There's something in it for you.

[FB] And what's that?

[M] I'll give you back your gun.

The Bodyguard quickly glances down at the side he is wearing a shoulder holster, unintentionally showing Michael where he carries his gun.

[FB] (SLIGHT SMIRK) You don't have my gun.

Michael makes a sudden move, kicking (or kneeing) the First Bodyguard in the groin, that has the man bending over, briefly incapacitated. Michael quickly seizes his gun, releases the safety and aims it at the Second Bodyguard - using the First Bodyguard's body to hide the gun from the other diners. The Second Bodyguard at the door had reached for his gun when Michael hit his associate, but stops when he sees where Michael has the gun aimed. Over the 'injured' bodyguard's coughing and groaning, Michael makes his request ..., again.

[M] My name's Michael. I'd like a word with her. Understand?

The First Bodyguard straightens up, wincing. He nods his assent to Michael's 'request,' picks up the orange juice he ordered and returns to the dining room. As the Second Bodyguard follows his boss, Michael quickly hides the gun in his waistband behind his back. While the First Bodyguard leans down to speak to Lisa, Michael takes another sip of his drink. [By the way, has anyone figured out the 'milk' thing? Is this a LFN 'in' joke or is Roy Dupuis just trying to tell his female fans to make sure that they get enough calcium in their diet?] He watches as Lisa listens, then swings her head around to stare at Michael. As she does mental pictures assail her of their last time together.

INTERIOR - UPPER GALLERY TO LARGE LOBBY

Michael is leaning against a column next to the balustrade, looking out into the lobby when Lisa arrives, accompanied by her bodyguards. Lisa comes to a stop when she sees Michael, her body language making it clear her emotional walls are up and fortified.

[LF] (DEMANDING TONE) What do you want?

As soon as he turns, it is apparent that Michael has switched to the 'persona' that seduced her before. His expression only shows remorse and concern.

[M] (SINCERE) To see you.

Lisa stands with her hands on her hips, not impressed. She drops her hands and shakes her head slightly.

[LF] Why?

Michael looks behind Lisa at her bodyguards.

[M] Can we talk alone?

Lisa thinks a moment, then issues an order.

[LF] Guys, give us some space.

[FB] (TO OTHER BODYGUARDS) Let's go.

As her security men file into the elevator, Michael and Lisa stare at each other a moment. Lisa then slowly approaches Michael.

[LF] So, I was a job ..., no, an assignment. ... You made that clear.

Lisa is now standing next to Michael. He turns to face her.

[M] At the time I thought it was true. ... I expected to forget you. I tried ..., but I couldn't.

[LF] (SHAKES HEAD) I don't believe you.

[M] (SINCERE) I came to see you.

Lisa stands a moment trying to read his face.

[LF] (SHAKES HEAD) No. It's another job. I know it. (LOOKS DOWN) I - I can't deal with this. This is too sudden.

Michael reaches out and gently draws her hair away from her face.

[M] Let me stay with you tonight.

Michael continues to caress Lisa's face, neck and shoulder, and she briefly closes her eyes, starting to give way.

[LF] I need ... some time ... to think. Please.

That, however, is the last thing Michael wants her to do. When Lisa shrugs off Michael's touch and starts to walk away, Michael lightly holds her arm with both his hand.

[M] There is no more time.

Lisa stops and turns to look at Michael.

[M] I've probably already been missed. They're looking for me. ... One night ..., that's all I ask.

Lisa stares into Michael's eyes, her mind telling her one thing, her heart another.

INTERIOR - LISA's PENTHOUSE - NIGHT

Michael is escorted into Lisa's living room by the First Bodyguard and a another bodyguard (hereafter "Third Bodyguard"). Lisa is standing by a console, noticeably tense and uncertain. She turns to face Michael as he approaches her. She looks over his shoulder to her security staff.

[M] (TO BODYGUARDS) You can go.

Michael turns and watches them depart, then focuses his attention back on Lisa. She moves to a nearby table on which a bottle of wine and glasses are standing.

[LF] Would you wa - want some wine?

[M] Whatever you're having.

Lisa gives an uneasy laugh as she leans down and picks up the wine and a corkscrew. However, her nervousness finds her awkward and inept at opening the bottle. Michael watches for a moment before reaching out to take the wine and set in back down on the table. He then gently picks up and caresses her hand. They hover for a moment staring at each other, before they both reach out for the other. Kissing leads to caressing; caressing leads to fondling and removal of clothing, and ..., well, fondling leads to Michael and Lisa doing 'the Wild Thing' on her living room couch. [And, yes, boys and girls, we got to see a "Roy move" - Michael picking up Lisa while kissing her.]

INTERIOR - SECTION / COMM

Operations is standing in Comm, his back to Birkoff, when one of the computers sounds an alert. Birkoff reads the monitor as Operations turns to find out what has happened.

[B] Michael's gone silent.

[O] What?!

[B] It just came in. .. Mission must have been compromised.

The monitor shows -

The window below the top window have -

The letters are flashing in bright red.

[O] (ADMONISHING) Yesterday you said .. Intel indicated complete success.

[B] It did.

[O] When will he reopen contact?

[B] Twenty-four hours.

Operations stares at Birkoff a moment, then leans down and keys something into the computer. Birkoff is tense as he watches Operations. After reviewing some Intel, he straightens back up.

[O] I don't like this, Birkoff.

[B] Intel seemed reliable. I don't know what happened.

[O] Screen the sources; eliminate the unreliable ones ..., and keep me informed.

[B] Yes, sir.

Operations looks at Birkoff another moment, before exiting Comm. As soon as he leaves, Birkoff grabs a chair and sits down.

INTERIOR - LISA's PENTHOUSE - NIGHT

Lisa is lying in Michael's arms, running her fingers up and down his face, not wishing to stop touching him. Michael, in turn, is caressing her arm, but it seems more an automatic reflex on his part. Lisa stares up into Michael's face as she talks.

[LF] Not a day has gone by ... that I haven't thought of us together.

Again, Michael's responses seem more automatic, then sincere [which we know they aren't]. I get the feeling he hasn't really thrown himself into the part.

[M] Me, too.

Lisa smiles and gently kisses Michael's chest.

[LF] Was it as good as you remember?

[M] Yes.

Lisa gives Michael an almost coy smile, then slowly gets up and puts her dress back on. As she does so, Michael sits up and watches her. [I would like to pause here just to say that our couple certainly didn't disrobe much. Michael only removed Lisa's dress, and Lisa seems to have only unbuttoned Michael's shirt. Well, we've all said that Spyboy IS talented ..., and he HAS been getting a lot of practice lately. I hope he at least unzipped his fly ..., or I'm going to have to add contortionist to his list of talents! Either that ..., or maybe Lisa keeps her apartment cold.]

[LF] Yes ....

As Lisa zips up her dress she walks over to a nearby long wall table.

[LF] Everything is just as it was. ...

However, when Lisa turns around, Michael now sees only a cold need for revenge in her eyes.

[LF] (ICY TONE) ... except me.

Lisa turns and hits a button on her phone, then turns back and leans against the table, getting ready to watch the fun. Michael only has time to stand before two of Lisa's bodyguards enter and rush him. He throws the first man over a nearby side table and the second he downs with a side kick to the stomach and a right jab [ah, right cross ..., oh, he hit the guy with his fist]. When the first man rises and tries to attack, Michael drops him again, this time by a karate chop to the man's throat and palm to his chin [you know, when Michael whacks someone with the palm of his hand (I've noticed it seems to be his 'whack of choice')]. However, when Michael turns for the next challenge he sees the First Bodyguard has entered and drawn a gun on him. He immediately stops fighting - just stands and holds his arms out. While the First Bodyguard keeps him covered, one bodyguard holds Michael's arms while the larger one repeatedly punches Michael in the stomach. Michael never takes his eyes off Lisa. The hitter stops punching him for a moment, but Michael is still restrained and almost bent double trying to catch his breath.

[LF] How does it feel, Michael?

Lisa's expression is cold.

[LF] How does it feel to be used? ...

Once more they stare at each other. However, where before their faces seem warm and tender [yeah, I know, but I'm talking about what Michael's face was showing, not what he was feeling], Lisa's now shows vengefulness and Michael's ... betrayal [once again I'm talking about what Michael is showing, not feeling.] Lisa makes a motion with her hand and the beating resumes. However, you can now see that her thirst for vengeance is over and she's having trouble watching Michael being turned into a human punching bag.

INTERIOR - CABIN - NIGHT

Fanning is sitting with his feet up, crossed on the table, eating rations out of a tin. Nikita is sitting on the floor in front of the fireplace studying him.

[DF] I'd share, but I'm kind of hungry.

It is apparent that the last thing on Nikita's mind is food. She wrestles with her thoughts a moment, then lets a question slip out.

[N] So .., how did you know?

Fanning immediately knows what Nikita is talking about.

[DF] What, about you and Michael? It didn't take a genius. .. People talk.

Fanning begins to fold his food with a spoon as he continues speaking.

[DF] (CONTEMPLATIVE TONE) I think it's really beautiful, though.

[I don't know what angered Nikita more, that Fanning's holding her captive ..., or he thinks he 'understands' ..., and approves of her relationship with Michael! Don't you just love a psychotic wife beater - who's a romantic.] Nikita quietly gathers a section of the chain in her hand and holds it behind her back. She is now half kneeling, half sitting on the floor. Nikita looks over at Fanning and motions to her coat.

[N] (REQUESTING) My coat ..., if that's all right.

Fanning is back to baiting Nikita.

[DF] It's all right if I say it's all right.

[N] (SHORT LAUGH) Request permission to get my coat.

Nikita's tone mimics Fanning's when he had requested to "take a leak" back at the camp. Fanning makes a gesture with his spoon.

[DF] Permission granted.

Nikita leans out, but the length of chain she's holding in her hand keeps her coat just out of reach.

[N] Hmm ..., can't reach.

Fanning, his guard down, laughs, puts his food down, gets up and leans over to hand Nikita the coat. As soon as he's in reach, Nikita releases the chain, grabs him and flips him over her to land on his back in front of the fireplace. Before Fanning can rise, Nikita grabs the chain, wraps it around his neck and begins to choke him. Fanning is unable to break her hold, so he reaches out, manages to grab a small burning log, and jabs the burning end into Nikita's shoulder. Nikita screams in pain and releases him. Fanning manages to crawl out of Nikita's reach and collapses into his chair, gasping for breath. Nikita is sitting on the floor nursing her burned shoulder. All of a sudden, Fanning starts to laugh.

[DF] (LAUGHS) Never learn, do I? ... (PANTING) You guys are good.

Nikita, again, hasn't a clue what Fanning will do, so just sits and waits for Fanning to retaliate. Again, Fanning surprises her.

[DF] (WIPING EYES) Ah, what the hell.

He takes an unopened tin from the table and tosses it to Nikita.

[N] Have yourself some dinner.

Nikita easily catches the tin, watches Fanning standing laughing, then can't stop herself from giving a small chuckle as well. [Nikita is probably mentally telling herself that Fanning is definitely 'sane-challenged.']

LISA APARTMENT

Michael is lying on the floor. He is holding his side and seems to be having trouble breathing. Lisa is standing nearby, surrounded by her bodyguards, looking down at him.

[LF] (MOCKING) Do you still want me, Michael?

[M] (BREATHLESS) Yes.

Lisa gives a cynical chuckle.

[LF] Oh ..., you're brilliant. But why don't we stop the games and tell me what you want?

Michael manages to roll over so he can look up at Lisa.

[M] (SINCERE) You.

Lisa now makes another mistake [her first was not running, screaming, from the restaurant the moment she laid eyes on Spyboy] by turning to her bodyguards and dismissing them.

[LF] Ummm .., go.

As soon as they are alone, Lisa reiterates her feelings.

[LF] (DEFENSIVE) I told you, I have changed. I am not the innocent girl you tricked so easily.

[Hmmm, why do I want to say she "... doth protest too much"?] As Lisa speaks, Michael slowly and painfully rolls over and manages to rise up enough to lean on his arms.

[LF] What's the job this time, Michael?

[M] I've told you.

[LF] (SHAKES HEAD AND SMILES) You expect me to believe ... that you just come here suddenly after all this time? ...

Lisa leans down to get a clearer view of Michael face.

[LF] (DISBELIEVING) Just because you want me? (LAUGHS AND SHAKES HEAD) No.

Michael has risen enough to lean his head on a rectangular built-in stone planter. A look of weary 'whatever' shows on his face. He takes a couple breaths before speaking.

[M] (BEATEN) Believe anything you want.

Against her will, Lisa is starting to believe Michael's re-appearance in her life is not part of a 'job' or 'assignment.' She walks over to a small bar and gets a hand towel, then returns and kneels next to him.

[LF] You know, I ... I used to dream ..., that you would come back.

Lisa starts to gently wipe Michael's face.

[LF] Then, as .. time pasted, I-I gave up hope. (PLEADING) Michael, why now? Why after so long ...?

[M] Because ..., David.

Michael looks up to see a look of horror appear on Lisa's face. This was not what she expected - or wanted - to hear.

[LF] What about David?

[M] He's not dead.

[LF] (APPREHENSIVE) Is - is he coming here?

Lisa immediately begins to panic at the thought of her ex-husband reappearing in her life.

[LF] (APPREHENSIVE) No ..., I moved. I moved dozens of times. .. I - I changed names. ... How could he find me?

[M] I did.

Lisa looks around, almost paralyzed with fear. Michael immediately sees this and makes it work for him.

[M] That's why I came ..., to protect you from him.

All Lisa's new-found self empowerment disintegrates as she falls back to leaning on a man for protection and support.

[LF] (REMORSEFUL) Why didn't you tell me?

[M] Because I didn't want to scare you.

Now that Michael has Lisa leaning on him for protection, he begins to extract the information he needs to kidnap her.

[M] I think one of your bodyguards is cooperating with him.

[LF] Which one?

[M] I don't know. .. How many are there?

Lisa shoots a fleeting look back at the portion of her penthouse that houses her security team.

[LF] Ten - two shifts of five.

[M] We have to spot the weak link in your security ..., before David does.

[LF] I don't know anything about security. That's why I hired them.

[M] If you had to slip out .. without being seen .., how would you do it?

Lisa thinks a moment, then remembers a past conversation with one of the bodyguards.

[LF] Oh, there's uh .. there's a service elevator that - that goes to the third floor. and then - then there's a stairwell. Lisa once more looks behind her - as if expecting one of her security to sneak up on her - then leans down closer to Michael.

[LF] (WHISPER) Michael, I've heard them say .. that that's the hardest one to guard.

Now that Michael has all the information he needs he immediately drops the penitent lover role, and goes into 'spyboy' mode. His face loses all expression, he stops gasping for breath, and gets up. Lisa watches in confusion at this swift turnaround, unaware she has once more been duped. Michael walks over to his coat, keeping his back to Lisa. Once there he extracts a small needle from one of his coat pockets. Meanwhile, Lisa has risen and followed Michael. He stands motionless as he hears her come up behind him. Lisa reaches up and lightly runs her hands over his shoulders. As she starts to lean her head on his back, Michael turns to face her. Lisa is unaware of the needle until she feels a prink on her upper arm. She only has time to make a small gasp of pain before passing out.

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff is working at his station, when he notices Operations enter the Common Area, making for Comm. He immediately takes a small CD and covertly inserts it into his Comm system.

[O] Has Michael checked in yet?

[B] I'm raising him now. (MICHAEL GENERATED VOICE) Birkoff?

[B] Michael? I read you. What's the status?

Operations leans his hands on Birkoff's desk while listening to 'michael.'

(MICHAEL GENERATED VOICE) Four Team members down.

[Now, I only counted three Operatives down. I guess the fourth was the Section driver we never see. If not, then Michael and Nikita are going to have to rustle up another body before they return to Section.]

[B] Should we abort?

(MICHAEL GENERATED VOICE) Negative. Nikita and I will proceed with the Mission.

Operations breaks in with a question before Birkoff can stop him.

[O] Michael ..., how was security breached initially?

Birkoff pulls the plug before Operations becomes aware he is only talking to a computer programmed with Michael's voice.

[B] (ALARMED) Michael, don't answer ..., the transmission's being monitored.

[O] Did they trace him?

Birkoff keys in a data request.

[B] No, I cut him off in time. But he won't call back in until the Mission's over.

[O] Let me know if he does.

[B] (NODS) Of course.

As soon as Operations leaves, Birkoff gives a big sigh of relief and pulls out the CD encoded with Michael's voice. He has done everything he could, now it's up to Michael.

INTERIOR - CABIN - DAY

Fanning is busy repacking his equipment. He obviously doesn't intend to stay at the cabin after he retrieves Lisa. He looks over at Nikita sitting on the stone hearth watching him.

[DF] Are you wondering what I'm going to do? ... Don't bother .., 'cause I'll tell ya. I'm going to stay in the woods because I like the isolation.

Fanning briefly turns his back on Nikita as he continues transferring his gear from a duffle bag to a backpack. He doesn't see a gun clip fall to the floor - but Nikita does.

[DF] I think it'll be great for Lisa, too, because she can get used to things again.

Nikita stands, keeping her eye on the dropped clip.

[N] Used to being your slave, you mean.

Fanning hears her approach and turns his head to look at her.

[DF] Yeah.

Fanning moves around the table so he can keep an eye on Nikita, but he still feels uneasy so he points to a nearby chair (a rocker).

[DF] (DEMANDING) Sit down!

They square off for a moment.

[DF] SIT!

Nikita takes one more side glance at the clip, then slouches into the rocker.

[DF] That's a good little doggie.

With Nikita out of threat range, Fanning resumes packing.

[N] You really are scum.

[DF] You know what? You're wrong.

While Fanning explains his eternal and constant love for Lisa [which she will reciprocate if he has to beat her into a bloody stump], Nikita slowly and carefully takes her foot and pushes a couple woven rugs until the furthest one covers the clip.

[DF] I ... am a man in love. The first time I ever saw Lisa I knew I was suppose to be with her ..., and Lisa knew she was meant for me.

The clip now covered, Nikita gives Fanning her undivided attention.

[DF] Now, there was a time I wanted revenge ..., but, you know what? If you disappear .. Section will come after me. But if I send you back with a cover story they won't ..., if they think I'm dead. Everything will be fine. And you and Michael can't exactly make up a story, not since Michael's gone AWOL looking for Lisa, right? So, maybe it's best to send you back alive.

Fanning stops, and looks at his gun lying on the table. Nikita is seated so she just sees him out of the corner of her eye - and doesn't notice him studying the gun. Fanning picks it up, chambers a bullet and saunters over to Nikita. Nikita hears him chamber the bullet and briefly closes her eyes, his recent actions having given her no idea which way he'll go. Fanning aims the gun at Nikita.

[DF] ... or not. ... (LOUDER) Hey.

Fanning waits until Nikita turns her head to look at him.

[DF] (YELLS) BOOM!

Nikita is, again, taken by surprise and can't stop jumping at the yell. Fanning just laughs and turns back to the table.

[DF] (HUMOROUS) You know what, it doesn't really matter what happens as long as I get Lisa back ..., and I'm gonna.

Fanning locks gazes with Nikita, knowing she hates the thought of him getting Lisa back.

[DF] And there's not a damn thing you can do about that, now, is there?

He holds Nikita's gaze for a moment more, before chuckling and turning away. He returns to the table, looking at his watch.

[DF] Well, its almost that time.

Fanning picks up his rifle and heads for the door.

[DF] Don't go anywhere.

Fanning leaves to meet Michael.

EXTERIOR - CABIN

Once outside, Fanning starts out for the rendezvous at a quick pace.

INTERIOR - CABIN

As soon as Nikita is sure Fanning is out of close range, she moves the mats to reveal the clip. She is just able to stretch out with her foot and push the clip into her reach. Once in her possession, she rolls over and sits on the rock fireplace.

INTERIOR - JEEP - DAY

Lisa is strapped into the passenger seat of the jeep Michael is driving. [Everyone on the various lists agreed that, considering he was kidnapping an unconscious woman out of a penthouse guarded by five men - three of whom had just beat the tar out of him - Michael managed to take the time to pick out a simple, yet elegant, traveling ensemble for Lisa. He even played lady's maid, since I don't think he rang for one. The finishing touch was braiding her hair.] Her head lolls groggily against the seat. Gradually she wakes up, becomes aware of her surroundings.

[LF] (MOANING) Oh, oh, my ..., my head ..., what ...

[M] I gave you an injection, it'll clear.

Lisa begins to remember the previous evening.

[LF] (BETRAYED) It's a job, isn't it?

Michael ignores her question.

[LF] (BETRAYED) And all that - that (MOANS) talk about love and protecting me was rubbish, wasn't it?

Michael doesn't bother to answer a question she's already answered.

[LF] (DEMANDING) Tell me this has nothing to do with David.

When Michael doesn't answer, Lisa begins to really freak.

[LF] (PLEADING) Please.

One look at Michael's face tells her this has everything to do with David. She starts to look around for a way to escape.

[LF] You're not going to take me to him!

With that, Lisa unbuckles her seat belt, bent on leaping out of the jeep. But when she tries to open the door, Michael merely reaches out and grabs her braid, yanking her back into the seat.

[LF] (PLEADING) NO! .. NO!

Lisa is no match for Michael in 'spyboy mode.'

INTERIOR - CABIN

Nikita releases a bullet from the clip and places it between one of the chain's links. She grabs a rock out of the fireplace

[hmm, interesting choice of burning material] and slams it down on the bullet.

EXTERIOR - WOODS OUTSIDE CABIN

The explosion is loud enough for Fanning to hear it. He races back to the cabin.

INTERIOR - CABIN

Unfortunately, for Fanning, he returns to find his captive bird has flown. As he looks at the broken chain he realizes that he now has to deal with Michael in protective mode for Nikita, Nikita in protective mode for Lisa, and a wife who probably just wants to get the hell out of Dodge (without her 'loving' husband).

EXTERIOR - FOREST IN VICINITY OF RENDEZVOUS

Michael pulls off the road and stops the jeep in a wooded area. He gets out, goes around to Lisa's side and pulls her out of the jeep.

[M] I have something for you.

Michael hands Lisa a small cylindrical bottle. She holds it up and studies it a moment, before looking into Michael's face.

[LF] What's this?

[M] Your way out.

Startled, Lisa swiftly brings her eyes back to the small bottle.

AREA SURROUNDING CABIN

The hunt is now on. Fanning is trying to locate Nikita or stop her from getting to Michael before the exchange. Nikita is trying to find a way to either get to Michael before he hands Lisa over ..., or take out Fanning. Meanwhile, Michael is dragging a VERY reluctant wife back to her husband. [I'll bet the Moldovian serfs living around the 'picturesque forest' thought this was better than any soap opera they could watch!] Lisa is alternatively pleading with Michael to let her go and trying to break free of his hold.

[LF] (PANICKING) No! No! You can't ...

Fanning (unsurprisingly) hears Michael and Lisa approach, and moves towards his wife's voice.

[LF] (VOICE) No! No! Let me go!

Nikita also hears Lisa's protestations and heads toward the sound.

[LF] (VOICE) You have to let me go!

Fanning suddenly hears a rustling in the bushes behind him. Spooked, he quickly turns and fires - scaring a flock of birds into the air. Michael quickly turns in the direction of the gunfire, and realizes Fanning has probably lost Nikita. He holds a struggling Lisa against his chest, holding her against him with his gun arm.

[LF] (PLEADING) Michael ... No! No! Please! Let me go! .. Nooo, let me go! Please. ...

After a second, he continues on his original course. Michael comes to a halt and leans against a tree, still holding fast to a whimpering Lisa. Fanning has them in his sights. He aims his rifle - and shoots over Michael's head. Michael ducks behind the tree and pushes Lisa away. Fanning take aim again and fires. This time there is no sign of Michael. Nikita hears the gunfire and runs toward the sound. Lisa, of course, is in total freak mode and just runs directionless through the forest. Fanning seems torn for a moment, hunt Michael down or retrieve Lisa. It's a quick decision to go after his wife. Michael quietly observes everything that is happening, then slips out of sight. Nikita manages to reach Lisa first. She grabs her and holds a hand over the terrified woman's mouth, quieting her.

[N] Shhh. Lisa, Lisa, Lisa ..., listen to me. We don't have very much time. I'm going to need your help. How did you and Michael get here?

Lisa realizes Nikita is trying to help her and immediately calms down. As she answers Nikita's questions she continually looks around for Fanning.

[LF] (BREATHLESS) In a jeep.

[N] Where?

[LF] (BREATHLESS) I don't know.

[N] Do you remember where the sun was?

[LF] (BREATHLESS) I'm not sure. ...

Nikita grabs hold of Lisa, making the young woman focus.

[N] (COMMAND) Lisa, you have to think!

[LF] (BREATHLESS) Behind us ..., to the left.

[N] Okay, let move .. (POINTS) that way.

Lisa has pointed them in the correct direction and they find the jeep. They both get in, Nikita starts it up and backs the jeep back onto the dirt road. They are speeding down the road when they see Fanning step out into the road ahead. Nikita, being a foregiving and nonviolent type, immediately tries to run him down. Before she can hit him, however, Fanning manages to shoot out the front left tire. The jeep careens off the road, into a tree, and stalls. Nikita instantly tries to restart the jeep, but it won't turn over. Fanning closes in and aims the gun at Nikita while greeting his wife.

[DF] Welcome home, Lisa.

Nikita turns and holds out her hand to reassure Lisa. Lisa doesn't seem to be panicking, however, but almost looks calm.

[I wonder if Lisa made her decision on how to handle her abusive husband here.]

[N] It's all right, don't move.

That said, she turns and looks back at Fanning. Fanning hears Nikita's instructions to Lisa and looses his patience.

[DF] (DEMANDING) Get out of the car!

Nikita doesn't stop watching Fanning, but reaches out and holds onto Lisa's arm.

[DF] (YELLING) Lisa, get out of the car!

Lisa, looking almost fatalistic, moves to open the door. Nikita feels her move and now looks at her, tries to hold on and keep her in the jeep.

[N] (UNDERTONE) Don't do it! ... Lisa. ...

Lisa shakes off Nikita's hand, gets out of the jeep and starts to walk towards Fanning. Nikita climbs over the back seat and jumps in front of Lisa, putting herself between Lisa and and her husband. Let us just say Fanning is not amused.

[DF] (DEMANDING) Lisa, get over here! ... (YELLS) Right now!

Lisa gently pats Nikita on the shoulder as she moves past her.

[LF] (UNDERTONE) It's all right.

Nikita doesn't try to stop her, but makes one more plea.

[N] (UNDERTONE) Don't do it, Lisa. ...

As soon as Lisa nears Fanning he reaches out and hauls her against him. You can tell Fanning is just itching to blow Nikita away.

[DF] I could kill you. .. But then Michael would just come after me, wouldn't he?

In the forest behind Fanning you see Michael watching the drama unfold. He makes no effort to stop or kill Fanning. Nikita starts to advance, even though Fanning still has his gun trained on her. Fanning reevaluates the situation and holds the gun on Lisa. Nikita immediately stops.

[DF] I let you live, he'll take you back to Section, like a good little boy. (PAUSE) You're lucky. I guess there's no contest.

NOW it hits Lisa why Michael dragged her out here. Not because of a Mission or a job, but because of Nikita. [Imagine how you would feel if you realized, not only had you been seduced and duped - AGAIN - but that it was to get back his love interest.] Nikita sees the knowledge in Lisa's eyes and there is a genuine sorrow in her's. She very briefly shakes her head. Fanning roughly turns Lisa around to leave.

[DF] (IRATE) Come on! Come on!

Fanning takes one more look at Nikita, then grabs Lisa's hand and drags her into the forest. The last thing you see of the couple is Lisa stealing looks back at Nikita (probably thinking back to their past conversations concerning Michael). Nikita looks up, then crosses the road to join Michael, who had come out of hiding. As he walks you realize he's now holding his chest - he's in pain, but doesn't mind that Nikita sees this. However, right now Nikita isn't exactly focusing her attention on Michael, but on the retreating couple.

[N] How long have you been standing there?

[M] A while.

[N] Why didn't you shoot him?

[M] I knew he wouldn't kill you.

Nikita briefly looks over where the Fannings had disappeared into the forest.

[N] But Lisa. ...

[M] She'll be fine.

Nikita is not ready to take Michael's word on this.

[N] We've got to help her.

Nikita studies his face, then turns to follow the Fannings. She has gotten no more than a few feet when she hears the hammer of a gun being drawn back.

[M] (CALLS OUT) Nikita.

Nikita turns and sees Michael has his gun pointed at her.

[N] (DISBELIEVING) You're going to kill me?

Nikita again turns to leave when Michael corrects her as to his intentions.

[N] No. I'll shoot you in the leg, and carry you back. (GRIMACES) But, it'll be easier for both of us if you walk.

This Nikita knows Michael will do. She gazes once more over her shoulder, then stalks over and gets into Michael's face. As soon as he realizes Nikita has dropped the idea of rescuing Lisa, he lowers the gun.

[N] You know, you're either insane, or the cruelest man who ever lived.

[I loved Michael's expression here. Here he has Nikita digging her spurs into him - and he could give a flying fig. From his point of view, it turned out pretty well. He not only got Nikita back, but matters have worked out so neither Nikita nor Lisa had been able to ..., compare notes. The fact that Lisa probably would also get rid of Fanning was icing on the cake. You'll notice that Michael would rather live with the fact that he would probably never know if Lisa actually poisoned David, rather than kill David himself and have Lisa around Nikita when she's in 'protective mode.' The last thing Michael wants is for Nikita to find out how he was able to abduct Lisa.] Michael realizes Nikita needs to know how Lisa will handle Fanning.

[M] I gave her the isotope.

[N] (NODS) So she can poison him.

[M] The only way she can truly be free is to kill him herself.

[N] Is that what she said, Michael? ... Or .., is that what you made her believe?

[M] Let's go.

Michael is finished discussing Lisa, and walks away. Nikita stands for a moment, thinking what Lisa's next day or two will be like, before following Michael.

PICTURESQUE PARK OF MOLDOVA
EXTERIOR - FOREST - DAY

The Fannings are hiking through the woods. Fanning is carrying a backpack, Lisa the canteen, indicating they had first returned to the cabin to retrieve his gear. Fanning stops and looks around.

[DF] (CONTENT) What a beautiful day.

Fanning turns and pulls the water bottle from Lisa's shoulder. He opens it and offers the canteen to Lisa.

[DF] Want some?

Lisa gives her head a slight shake.

[O] (UNDERTONE) No.

Fanning stares at Lisa an uncomfortable moment, then holds the canteen up and pours it first into his mouth, then on the face.

[DF] Ahhh.

He wipes the water off his face with his hand, then again offers the canteen to Lisa.

[DF] Here, we've got a long ways to go.

Lisa again shakes her head, holding her hand briefly up to her throat.

[LF] (UNDERTONE) No ..., I - I'm sure.

An impatient expression shows on Fanning's face, then he turns and starts to walk. When Lisa doesn't immediately follow him, he turns back to look at her. The view we see Fanning is from behind Lisa. You notice she's hiding something in her hand.

[DF] Coming?

[LF] (CLEARS THROAT) Yeah.

Lisa waits until her husband lengthens the distance between them by a couple of feet, before dropping the now empty isotope bottle. That done, she dutifully hurries to catch up with her soon-to-be dead husband.

INTERIOR - JEEP

Michael and Nikita are returning to Section. Michael is talking on his cell phone to Operations as he drives. Nikita seems lost in thought.

[M] (ON PHONE) Of course.

Michael sets the phone down.

[N] So you think Operations believed you?

[M] I think so.

[N] Good. ...

Nikita looks up into the sky.

[N] ... So we're in the clear then.

A faraway expression shows in Nikita's face as she thinks of someone else.

[N] I wonder if Lisa's in the clear?

Michael says nothing - Lisa's no longer a matter of interest to him.
