TEASER
AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND
INTERIOR - SALSA CLUB / DANCE FLOOR - NIGHT

The club atmosphere is dark and smoky. There is no band visible, but a Latin tune is playing and the dance floor is crowded with couples twirling to a Salsa beat. Michael makes his way between the dancing couples, until he reaches a back stairway leading to offices located on the floor below. When a guard tries to stop him, Michael doesn't turn, just jets his hand out and knocks the man down the stairs. [Michael move! Michael move!] He then assumes the guard's position and waits. Nikita, in a short, dark fringed dress with a red glossy jacket, also makes her way across the floor. As she draws parallel with one of the couples, the male dancer (Frank) breaks away from his partner, steps in front of Nikita and starts to twirl her around the dance floor. As they dance, Frank surreptitiously passes her a key card. As soon as Nikita is in possession of the card, Frank returns to his original dance partner, as Nikita dance walks over to Michael and stops, putting her arms around his neck. Michael takes her left hand and slowly guides it down his body to the waistband of his pants - and a gun. They maintain eye contact as Nikita draws the gun out, then turns and quickly moves down the stairway, while Michael moves back to guard the stairway. Nikita steps over the unconscious guard at the bottom of the stairs and walks down the hallway, until she comes to a doorway. She stops, looks around to make sure she is not being watched, then steps up into a small room containing a computer. She stands in front of the computer and swipes the key card through a lock box attached to the monitor's side. The screen opens to reveal a table. Nikita reads the information, then checks in with Section.

[N] Looks like it's all here.

INTERIOR - SECTION / COMM

Birkoff is at his station overseeing the Mission.

[B] Good. Destroy it.

SALSA CLUB / COMPUTER ROOM

Nikita pulls two gadgets containing powerful magnets from a storage space below the computer. She attaches the magnets to the hard drive, then turns back to the screen and watches as the magnets corrupt the information shown on the screen.

[N] Done.

SECTION / COMM

[B] Get out of there. They'll be on top of you any second.

SALSA CLUB / COMPUTER ROOM

However, when Nikita tries to leave the room, she finds the door locked from the other side.

[N] Birkoff, I can't get out.

[What I thought odd about this was ..., Nikita didn't open any door when she entered the room, but walked right in. I also didn't see any door swing shut behind her. Was the door on a closed door automatic timer? And, if they already knew she was there, why not shoot off the lock? I know that this was a CPD ("Convenient Plot Device"), but I HATE it when the little things don't fall into place.]

SECTION / COMM

[B] What do you mean?

[N] The door's locked.

Birkoff pulls up a schematic of the club, which shows the computer room highlighted in red. Above the schematic, the following words are blinking in yellow.

SECURITY BREACH DETECTED
ALARM SYSTEM ACTIVATED

[B] (TO NIKITA) They know you're there. Michael, Nikita's trapped. Go in.

SALSA CLUB / HEAD OF STAIRWAY

Michael moves from his position to descend the stairway. Before he can start, he sees a guard approaching from the back of the club and takes him out, then continues down the stairs. Halfway down he sees and shoots another guard who has just reached the bottom of the stairs and discovered the body of the first guard.

SALSA CLUB / COMPUTER ROOM

Nikita is crouched behind the computer when she hears Michael.

[M] Nikita, this way.

Michael has opened another door into the room, and doesn't see a guard appear behind him. Before Nikita can warn him, the guard tazers Michael and drags him away. When she tries to follow another guard fires, forcing Nikita to return fire. By the time Nikita has shot the other guard, Michael has been dragged out of the room, the door closing behind him and his attacker.

SECTION / COMM

[N] (VOICE) Birkoff, someone just grabbed Michael.

SALSA CLUB / COMPUTER ROOM

[B] (VOICE) Don't pursue, there are too many shooters. I'm sending in backup.

A trapped expression appears on Nikita's face as she realizes there is nothing she can do to help Michael.

AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND
INTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST / RESEARCH LABORATORY

Two guards wheel in a small cage. Inside, an unconscious Michael is handcuffed to the bars. A man approaches the cage to stand behind him as Michael regains consciousness, who hears the footsteps and briefly glances behind him.

[P] I see you are awake.

Perez crouches down behind Michael, reaches in and grabs a handful of Michael's hair, exposing his neck.

[P] We have some questions to ask you before you're disposed of. We're ... curious how you found out about us.

Perez brings up his other hand to show he's holding a syringe, and injects a drug into Michael's neck. He stands and speaks to the two thugs guarding Michael.

[P] Get him prepared.

As the two guards wheel the cage out, Michael's head drops as the drug takes effect. Perez turns and moves further into the room, which looks like a type of kitchen. [Actually, if you made the 'body coolers' look like ordinary refrigerators, it would almost exactly match the Presidential Palace's kitchen in "Verdict."] While he walks he whistles Debussy's "Claire de Lune." He approaches what looks like a bank of large refrigerators. However, the doors are glass and two men and a woman are visible - all stripped and shaved. [What is it with Perez? Is he the only one allowed to have hair? I was surprised to see his female technician still had her head of hair intact.] Perez walks up to one of the males, who is seated facing the door, hands covering his groin. Perez leans down and taps on the glass, just as he would do to an animal behind glass, to get his attention. The man slowly raises his head and Perez wiggles his hand in a little wave. He then moves to the next 'cooler' that contains the woman. She is sitting with her back to the door, her arms folded in front of her. Here, too, Perez taps on the glass to get her attention. When the women looks up, he speaks to her.

[P] (ALMOST A WHISPER) How are you today, Sunshine?

Perez's face holds a smile but the woman shows no indication she heard him, just bends her head back down so she is almost in a fetal position.

INTERIOR - SECTION / BRIEFING AREA

Birkoff, Nikita, plus several other unnamed Operatives are already seated at the briefing table when Operations joins them.

[O] Last night, we engaged in an operation to destroy certain records belonging to this man.

Operations pulls up a Blue Screen of Orlando Perez.

[O] Orlando Perez, a first-tier Red Cell tactician who's been responsible for the abductions of several ... high-level players ..., all of whom have ... access to sensitive Intel.

Operations disengages the Blue Screen.

[O] There have been ... no demands for their release. We believe he's using them as involuntary sources. Birkoff. ...

Before Birkoff can begin, Nikita breaks in with a question.

[N] So, what about Michael?

Operations just stares at Nikita a moment for interrupting the briefing, then nods his head at Birkoff.

[B] (TO OPERATIVES) The information we destroyed last night was vital to Perez's operation. In order to recover it, he'll have to subcontract one of three data recovery experts.

[O] ... All of whom we now own.

Nikita again breaks into the conversation.

[N] I asked a question.

All Operatives turn and look at Nikita as she forces Operations to address the matter before he is ready. Operations gives her another warning look. Then he removes his glasses and briefly answers her.

[O] If Michael is still alive and we're able to recover him ... without incurring further losses, we will.

[N] He should be a priority.

Operations does a small doubletake, obviously taken by surprise at Nikita challenging his decision.

[O] I beg your pardon?

[N] If Perez is abducting agents to extract Intel, then Michael's going to become a liability. ... We need to extract him.

[O] Or kill him.

Operations has come to the end of his patience with respect to Nikita, so takes a moment to lay down the law.

[O] Let me break this down for everybody ..., so we're clear. We have a mandate to stop Perez and we .. will. As far as Michael is concerned ..., he is a Class Five Operative ... and I have no intention ... of sacrificing him unnecessarily. Our Profilers are working up a strategy as we speak. Your pads will be updated with your respective tacticals. This briefing is over!

All other Operatives quickly get out of the line of fire as Operations zeros in on Nikita.

[O] In case you have forgotten ..., this is a military organization. There is a chain of command and protocol for speaking to superiors. ... I will .. accept a certain leeway from time-to-time, when emotions run high ..., but .. not .. always.

Operations gets right in Nikita's face and stares her down. Nikita realizes she has overstepped and immediately backpedals.

[N] I'm sorry.

Operations makes a small nod, silently accepting her apology and leaves the briefing area.

INTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

Perez enters the room and moves to stand in front of Michael, who is confined in a high-tech metal frame chair and attached to electrodes that are hooked into a medical monitoring system. He is bare-chested and two arm-like projectors are injecting some type of drug into his chest. His arms are fastened above his head and a metal-like 'halo' holds his head in place. [My impression is that this chair is also wired as a type of heating device. Maybe part of Perez's 'treatment' uses heat in conjunction with the drugs.] It is obvious that Michael has been heavily sedated; his expression appears vacant. A female Technician is standing nearby controlling the various machinery.

[PT] His blood level's at 88. Should I increase?

[P] No. That should be enough. ... Let's begin.

Perez stands so he is almost in Michael's face. Michael shows no indication he is aware of Perez.

[P] (TO MICHAEL) What is your name?

Michael answers in a trance-like tone.

[M] Michael.

[P] Michael, what?

[M] Samuelle.

[P] (SMILES AT MICHAEL) (ALMOST A WHISPER) Hello, Michael Samuelle. ... Where were you born?

[M] Marseilles.

[P] In what year?

A monitor shows Michael's blood level, heart and brain activity.

[M] 1965.

[PT] His EEG and impedance are stable. He's telling the truth.

[P] For whom do you work?

Michael hesitates a moment, then his eyes roll back and he seems to black out. Perez becomes impatient and repeats the question.

[P] I asked you a questions, Michael Samuelle. For whom ... do you work?

Again Michael says nothing.

[P] (TO TECH) What's the problem?

[PT] It's likely he's programmed to resist certain types of memory desensing.

[P] Can we work around it?

The Tech dials up the machine administering the drug.

[PT] Give it another two hours and he'll be an open book.

The vacant, heavily drugged look reappears on Michael's face as the increased flow of drugs enter his bloodstream.

INTERIOR - SECTION / BIRKOFF's AREA

Operations enters Comm to stand in front of Birkoff's work station.

[O] You got something?

[B] One of our data recovery informants was contacted by a woman named Ying Kam.

[O] She works for Perez?

[B] (NODS) She's being brought in now.

[O] Has she offered up anything, yet?

[B] No. She'll need some persuasion.

CORRIDOR OUTSIDE MADELINE's OFFICE

Operations reaches Madeline's door and taps in the entrance code, but the door doesn't open. As He reenters the code, and receives another lock out, he hears the faint sound of Madeline's laughter, and knocks on the door. There is a slight pause, then the door opens. The room at first appears vacant, then Madeline steps out where Operations can see her. She's holding a remote with which she obviously opened the door. [I shouldn't have been surprised that Madeline has a way of locking out the door's code. Up to now it seemed that whoever had her door code could visit Madeline, whether she wished it or not.] A tall good-looking young Operative appears next to Madeline and smiles unconcernedly at Operations.

[RB] (TO OPERATIONS) How ya doing?

The Operative doesn't seem concerned over Operations' unresponsiveness, just gives him another smile as he leaves the room. A nonplussed expression briefly shows on Operations' face as he steps down into Madeline's office. [Russell obviously hasn't been 'up close and personal' with Operations or he wouldn't be this cocky. It does make you think. Do most Operatives have the same amount of interface with the top brass as Nikita always has ..., or is she treated special due to Michael's interest in her? Also, did Michael's interest trigger Operation's scrutiny? Hmmmm.]

[O] (TO MADELINE) Are you busy?

[MA] No. Russell was just telling me an amusing story about his last Delta pick-up.

[O] I see.

[MA] What's up?

Madeline turns and walks around and sits at her desk.

[O] Mobile's bringing in one of Perez's people. A woman. She'll need your attention.

[MA] How soon?

[O] Within the hour.

[MA] (SMILES) I'll be there.

It is obvious Operations wants to ask about Burke, but Madeline doesn't give him any kind of opening, so he leaves without conversing further. Madeline turns her attention back to the work on her monitor.

SECTION / SYSTEMS

A screen shows a search in progress for 'russell Burke.' The search parameter disappears to be replaced with an error message:

ERROR
ACCESS DENIED

It is not until you hear swearing that you realize it is Operations trying to perform the search.

[O] Damn it!

Operations continues to jab at the keyboard as he calls Birkoff over.

[O] (YELLS) Birkoff!

[B] Sir?

[O] Get over here. (SIGHS)

It is obvious that Operations' impatience is hindering his work on the computer.

[O] (INDICATES COMPUTER) What the hell's wrong with this thing?

Birkoff stands next to Operations, looking over his shoulder at the computer screen.

[B] What are you trying to access?

[O] A file on one of our Operatives.

[B] Who?

Birkoff leans down and starts to key in information.

[O] Russell Burke. What do you know about him?

Birkoff pulls up Burke's profile sheet.

[B] We use him for a lot of Valentine Ops.

An surprised expression appears on Operations' face. I thought this was such a hoot! Operations obviously doesn't see what females (i.e., Madeline) finds so attractive.]

[O] Really?

[B] Yeah. Women go crazy for this guy. He's brought in a lot of hard Intel over the last couple of years. ... You want me to pull an efficiency on him?

[O] No. That's fine ....

Having found what he wanted, a much calmer Operations departs Systems and Birkoff returns to his work.

SECTION - WHITE ROOM

Ying Kam is strapped into 'the Chair.' Her back is to the door, so she can only hear when Madeline enters the room. It is obvious that this was done to add to Ms. Kam's anxiety and fear. Ying Kam's expression shows no hard bitten agent, just a frightened woman. Madeline closes the door and addresses Ms. Kam's back.

[MA] Hello, Ms. Kam. ... Can I get you anything? Some water?

Ying Kam says nothing, just stares down at the floor. Madeline goes into her normal interrogation mode: circling the chair while orally destroying her subject's defenses.

[MA] I've looked at your file. ... You present differently than most of our detainees. Raised in an upper middle-class family ..., bright ..., very attractive, but restless. ...

Madeline stops when she is standing in front of Ying Kam.

[MA] You got entangled in a relationship with Orlando Perez. A man who uses you for errands and sex.

Ms. Kam's expression shows her dislike of Madeline's description of her relationship with Perez. Madeline moves closer, deliberately moving into the young woman's 'space.' [The matter-of-fact way Madeline makes the following statement sends chills up your spine. Her tone seems to indicate she doesn't really care which way she gets the Intel.]

[MA] Trust me ..., you do not have the strength to withstand the pain our technology can inflict. The question is simple: will you cooperate now ... or will you force me to modify you?

The last view seen of Ms. Kam's face shows she has come down heavily in favor of spilling the beans now.

SECTION - OPERATIONS' PERCH

Operations is looking out over Section. He watches as Russell Burke briefly flirts with a female Operative as he crosses the Common Area. In the background, you hear his Comm beep.

[MA] (VOICE) We just got location on Perez.

[O] Good. Send a Team.

INTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

Michael is in a deeper state of sedation.

[PT] (TO PEREZ) I've boosted the dosage. He should be ready.

[P] Good.

[PT] But I can only keep him saturated for a couple of minutes. After that ..., there'll be too much damage to get anything useful.

Perez studies Michael and stands right next to Michael. His expression as he studies him shows Perez thinks of Michael as just another research specimen.

[P] Let's see if you're worth keeping alive. ...

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff's monitor shows the parameters of the Mission profile - and that the status is 'set.'

[B] Everyone to second mark. We're closing in.

EXTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST

A Team of five Operatives dressed in black field attire and balaclavas race around a side corner of a rooftop and approach one of the entrances.

INTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST

They enter and take defensive positions just inside the door. There they stand and wait for Birkoff's signal to advance.

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

[P] Who do you work for, Michael?

It is obvious that Michael is trying to fight, but the drugs are too much for him.

[M] Section One.

[P] What were you doing at my club?

Again Michael fights to stay silent.

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff watches the monitor and informs the Team when the marks indicate a 'Code Blue.'

[B] Your marks are up. Go!

INTERIOR - RED CELL OUTPOST

The Team immediately begins firing and advancing further into the outpost.

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

Perez and his Technician hear the gun play and immediately evacuate, leaving Michael locked in the chair, the machine still pumping him with drugs.

RED CELL OUTPOST / OUTER HALLWAYS

One Team member breaks away while the others return fire and provide cover. As the Operative runs down the hallway, it becomes apparent it is Nikita. Ying Kam obviously has given Section an outlay of the outpost and Michael's location, because Nikita seems to know exactly where to go. She races down a stairway, through closed double doors and down another long hallway.

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

A close-up of Michael chest shows the injector arms still pumping the drugs into his body. Sweat is pouring down his body and he seems barely conscious. Nikita rushes through the doors to Medical and sees Michael's hooked up to the machine. A light box behind him illuminates x-rays of his skull.

[N] Michael?

As Nikita rushes over to Michael, she pulls off her balaclava, so he can see who it is. She kneels in front of him, laying her weapons on the ground. Michael has not spoken or otherwise indicated he realizes she is in the room. Nikita briefly studies the apparatus attached to Michael, before carefully extracting the injector arms, and removing the various restraints binding him to the chair.

[N] Michael. ...

Nikita reaches up and gently touches his face, her expression concerned, but not alarmed.

[N] Can you walk?

Michael hasn't moved, just looks vaguely around the room.

[M] I think so.

Nikita places a gun in Michael's hand, which he looks at like its something he's never seen.

[M] What's this for?

[N] The area's not secure, yet.

One of Perez's men bursts into the room, his gun aimed at Nikita and Michael. Michael doesn't seem to realize he is in danger, just continues to stare down at the gun, but Nikita whips around at the sound of the door opening and shoots the goon before he can get any rounds off. It still hasn't hit her that Michael is not reacting as he should. She rises and sprints to the door to see if there was anyone accompanying the dead guard, then looks back and realizes Michael hasn't moved.

[M] Where are we?

This question has Nikita returning to stand in front of Michael. She is beginning to realize Michael is not just drugged.

[N] Michael, it's me ..., Nikita. Come on.

Michael makes no move to rise, just continues to stare vacantly around the room, oblivious to any sense of danger.

[N] Michael? (RAISES HER VOICE) Let's go!

[M] (SMILES) Why ..., Why do you keep calling me Michael?

Nikita finally realizes the problem is not just that Michael's been drugged, but his memory seems to be impaired. Nikita contacts Birkoff as she shrugs out of her leather jacket and helps Michael put it on.

[N] Okay, Birkoff, it's me. I've got Michael How do we get out of here?

SECTION / COMM

[B] Nothing's secure yet. Can you augment a Tactical?

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

[N] No. Michael's been sedated. I'm going to have to keep him close.

[I'll bet the fact Michael is docilely letting Nikita 'dress' him really had her freaked.]

[B] (VOICE) Okay, let me see if I can create some space for you.

SECTION / COMM

[B] Team Three, increase your wedge by a few degrees.

RED CELL OUTPOST / INNHER HALLWAYS

Two Section Team members silently nod to each other, before opening fire and advancing into the research area. They manage to take out Perez's men [who you will note, also seem to be missing their hair. I wonder if Section Operatives were told to just shoot anyone with shaved heads?] and race through the room. As they pass the refrigerators housing Perez's three 'subjects,' one of the men is cognizant enough to look up at the blur of black uniforms passing him.

SECTION / COMM

[B] Okay, Nikita. There's a door ten meters to your right, down the hallway.

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

[B] (VOICE) ... it leads out. You'll be clear for the next sixty seconds.

[N] Okay. (TO MICHAEL) We've got to go now.

Michael's expression is almost childlike in his confusion. He obviously isn't sure he can trust Nikita.

[M] I don't know who you are.

[N] You've been drugged. I don't have time to explain, but I'm here to help. These people are trying to kill you.

[M] Why?

[N] Because you're their enemy. You're an anti-terrorist Operative.

[M] (SMALL LAUGH) No, I'm not.

Nikita is now realizing the extent of damage to Michael's memory. She studies his face for clues on how she can help him.

[N] Who do you think you are?

A flush of panic covers Michael's face as he realizes he doesn't know who he is.

[M] (STUDDERS) I can't ... remember.

SECTION / COMM

[B] Nikita, I can't keep this corridor clear. You've got to get out of there.

RED CELL OUTPOST / MEDICAL ROOM

[N] You want to live, you better come with me. Come on. Nikita forces the point, by helping Michael out of the chair. When she is satisfied he is following, she moves to the room's door. She first checks to make sure the way is clear, then leaves, pulling Michael out behind her.

RED CELL OUTPOST / HALLWAY OUTSIDE MEDICAL ROOM

Nikita takes the lead as she moves to join the rest of the Team. Michael is behind her holding a gun, but making no attempt to use it. He is obviously feeling lost and frightened. When they reach the Operative keeping the hallway clear, Nikita takes shelter behind a nearby cement column while Michael kneels beside her. She looks around the corner and makes contact with the Operative standing guard.

[TO] (TO NIKITA) Are you ready?

[N] Yeah, let's go.

The Operative starts across the exposed area of the hallway, but is cut down by a Red Cell guard stationed on some piping near the ceiling. Nikita moves to get a better bead on the guard cutting off their retreat. Michael peeks around, sees the gunplay and quickly ducks back down behind the column. Nikita manages to take out the guard, then looks around for Michael.

[N] Michael! Michael, get over here!

Michael is frozen, cowering down behind the protective cement column. Suddenly, behind him, a Red Cell guard breaks through the doors, firing. Michael's instinctively returns fire, shooting the guard. He seems paralyzed, couched down looking at the dead guard. Nikita rushes over, pulls Michael up and throws him against a near wall.

[N] Stay .. with .. me!

She looks around to see if the coast is clear, then looks back at Michael.

[N] Ready?

Michael nods yes, and follows her out.

INTERIOR - SECTION / COMM

Operations enters Comm, looking at his watch, and joins Birkoff at his computer.

[O] How did we do?

[B] We lost four Ops.

[O] And Perez?

[B] He slipped through.

A disgusted look appears on Operations' face.

[O] How?

Birkoff gets up and moves to another computer, not sitting down, but leaning over it as he enters data.

[B] We're still not sure.

[I noticed here that Birkoff makes sure he keeps his back to Operations during most of this 'debrief.' The only time he turns to look at Operations is to give him good news. Yup, this boy is definitely learning the art of 'duck and cover' while being interrogated.]

[O] In other words, a complete failure.

[B] We haven't finished combing the scene, yet. But, (BRIEFLY TURNS AND LOOKS AT OPERATIONS) we did pick up Michael.

[O] When you get something substantial, call me.

INTERIOR - SECTION / VAN ACCESS

Michael and Nikita arrive at Van Access. For once, Nikita leads, with Michael following. He is looking around like this is his first time in Section. As they walk down the outer corridor, Nikita lags back, forcing Michael to take the lead. When they walk through the inner portal to the corridor, they are greeted by Operations.

[O] Michael?

At first Michael doesn't turn, as if he doesn't recognize his name. He slowly turns to look, first at Nikita ..., then, at her nod, Operations.

[M] Yes?

Operations doesn't see anything wrong with Michael.

[O] (SMILES) We're glad you're back.

[M] Thank you.

[O] Were you able to extract an RP on Perez?

Nikita swallows as a blank expression shows on Michael's face.

[M] An RP?

Nikita quickly steps in to cover the fact Michael doesn't seem to know what an 'rP' is.

[N] His Retreat Point's still not known. I think we should take Michael to Medical before he debriefs. (TAKES DEEP BREATH) There was quite a bit of interrogation equipment at the site.

At this remark, Operations studies Michael more carefully (slight concern showing in his face).

[O] (TO MICHAEL) Are you all right?

[M] (VAGUE) Yes. Just .. need a little bit of ... rest.

[N] I'll take him.

[O] Fine.

Operations moves away, and Nikita, after one more glance back at Operations, guides Michael down the corridor in the opposite direction.

COMM / MADELINE's OFFICE

Operations visits Madeline, hands in pockets, an obvious agenda in mind. Madeline is seated at her desk. As he enters, she smiles a greeting, but doesn't rise and join him.

[MA] Hello.

[O] (SMILES) I have to pick a decoy for Uzbekistan. The chances of returning alive are less than ten percent.

[MA] I'm aware of that. So?

Operations removes his glasses as he comes to the point of his visit.

[O] I'm thinking of sending Russell. ... Unless you think he'd be more ... valuable where his is now.

Operations' speech makes it apparent he is fishing, trying to bait Madeline to reveal more about her relationship with the young Operative. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't work.

[MA] I don't think so. Russell's a good choice.

[O] Good. Then its settled.

Madeline watches Operations leave, then turns to her computer and accesses a file. The monitor shows her system "LOADING MISSION PROFILE..." The screen displays:

D/SR MISSION PROFILE [F9888-3]
UZBEKISTAN T/.2 OPA TEAM
DC-ET PROCEDURE SET > ACCESS BLUE-4
Russell Burke's picture is shown on the profile. Madeline then accesses his screen. It shows he already has been designated as "MISSION DECOY." Madeline studies the screen a moment, then stars at the door Operations just left through.

INTERIOR - NIKITA's APARTMENT / BEDROOM

Michael is sleeping in Nikita's bed. He wakes up, looks around, then sits up to stare out the nearby window. Nikita has been sitting in her bedroom doorway, keeping watch, and sees he is awake. Michael looks around the room, a wide-eyed, almost innocent look on his face. He finally notices Nikita, who smiles a greeting.

[N] Hi.

[M] How long did I sleep?

[N] Not long. A couple of hours.

A faraway expression appears in Michael's eyes.

[M] I had strange dreams ....

Nikita, hoping for some sign that Michael is regaining his memory, moves to sit at the foot of the bed.

[N] Did you remember anything, yet?

Michael seems to be replaying the dreams in his head.

[M] (SHAKES HEAD) No. ... Maybe we should contact my family. They must be worried.

Nikita is sitting with her back to Michael as she replies.

[N] You don't have a family. (SIGHS) Not in the ordinary sense of the word. The organization we work for is ... so covert that none of us have any real identities. ... We're all dead ..., as far as the outside world is concerned.

Michael's expression as he listens to her seems to indicate he's having problems comprehending what Nikita is telling him.

[M] Do I have friends?

Nikita now turns to look at Michael.

[N] I don't know. ... I don't really know that much about you.

[M] How long have you known me?

[N] Over three years. ... You trained me.

Michael smiles, but now a confused expression surfaces, as he tries to make sense of his relationship with Nikita.

[M] Why don't you know me better?

Nikita turns and studies Michael's face, before looking away. She cannot explain what she doesn't understand herself.

[N] It's hard to explain.

[M] (SMALL SMILE) I must be a real jerk.

Nikita breaks out into laughter, his good humored retort taking her by surprise.

[N] Actually ..., (SMALL LAUGH) .. ah ... I'm very fond of you.

A pleased expression appears on Michael's face.

[M] (SMALL SMILE) I'm happy to hear to hear that. ...

Michael's smile fades as he thinks back over his rescue.

[M] Yesterday, when I .. killed this man. ... I've done that before, haven't I?

Nikita says nothing, just reaches over and gently pushes his hair out of his eyes, a sad expression on her face.

[M] What will happen if my m-memory doesn't return?

[N] They'll kill you.

[M] Wh - Why don't they just let me go ...?

Nikita's tone turns harsh as she remembers her past attempts to escape.

[N] Because they don't let anybody go!

Michael is unable to grasp what kind of organization this is, that would kill a man for losing his memory.

[M] I can't accept that.

Nikita puts her hand over his on the bedcovers.

[N] But you have to.

[M] (ANIMATED) I may not know who I was ..., but I know who I am. I can feel it. ... I'll never be treated like a ..., like a caged animal.

Nikita eyes fill with tears as she remembers this is almost the same dialogue she told Michael when she first arrived at Section. As if she can't help herself, she once more gently nudges his hair off his face. Nikita is stuck, wanting but unable to help him. [This is an excellent example of the old saying "be careful what you wish for." Can you image all the times she wished Michael could feel the same as she did? Well, she got her wish.]

LUKENWALDE, GERMANY
INTERIOR - MEN's CLUB / OFFICE

Perez is sitting, talking on the telephone. While he speaks, a male manicurist is giving him a manicure.

[P] (ON PHONE) ... Minor setback, that's all. Everything's still on for tomorrow night. ... Right here at the club. No ..., it'll be fine. The weapons are secure. I'll see you in Tangiers by the weekend.

Perez hangs up, thinking about the conversation, when the manicurist accidentally jabs his finger. He pulls away his hand and studies the 'injured' finger.

[P] Idiot! ... Be careful.

SECTION / COMM

Operations looks over from his 'perch' to Birkoff at his station.

[O] (VOICE) Yes, Birkoff?

[B] I just received something about Perez from Section Seven.

[O] What?

[B] Someone's brokering a short range tactical system on the black market. Indicators suggest Perez might be the buyer.

[O] Call Michael in. Initiate a Profile.

INTERIOR / NIKITA's APARTMENT / LIVING ROOM

Soft music is playing in the background. Michael is sitting on one of Nikita's chairs, wrapped in a bathrobe. He is holding a belt tightly around his upper arm. Nikita is kneeling in front of Michael, taking a sample of his blood (using the same type of syringe used in "Inside Out").

[M] Why do you need my blood?

[N] Well, if there are any drugs left in your system ..., maybe they'll be able to tell us something.

[M] You're a good friend, Nikita.

Nikita looks up at Michael, a complex expression on her face. When she realizes Michael is studying her face, she immediately glances back down. Michael sees this and tries to meet her eyes as he probes.

[M] Did I say something wrong?

Nikita again briefly looks up, then back down.

[N] No. Its ... (SIGHS) It's just hard to get used to.

Michael continues to try to meet her gaze, a small smile lifting one corner of his mouth.

[M] What?

[N] You.

Nikita has finished drawing blood, and removes the belt they were using as a pressure wrap.

[M] Didn't I ever tell you things like that?

[N] No.

Nikita busies herself by giving him a cotton swap to hold on his arm.

[M] I don't believe it. ... Did we ever dance?

Nikita is becoming uncomfortable where the conversation is leading, and pushes her hair back over her shoulder.

[N] (SHAKES HEAD) Only under orders.

Michael thinks a minute, then reaches out and takes Nikita's hand as she rises to her feet, joining her. Nikita looks at him, a puzzled expression on her face. When Michael continues to hold her hand and look at her, Nikita realizes he wants to dance. She starts to step back, obviously ill at ease with this 'new' Michael.

[N] (RELUCTANT) Oh, Michael ..., I don't think so ...

Michael moves to place his other hand on her waist. Nikita takes another small step back, holding up the vial of his blood as an excuse to stop. Michael simply takes it out of her hand and places it on the nearby coffee table.

[M] Please.

When Michael moves nearer and takes her hands, Nikita gives him an uneasy smile. Michael holds up his right hand and makes a 'little bit' motion.

[M] (WHISPER) Just a little bit.

When she sees how determined Michael is, Nikita gives in. [Even with his memory impaired, Michael knows Nikita is important to him. Knowing this, he uses the skills he still possesses to get closer to her. I really don't know if this shows the 'old' Michael's emotions for Nikita, or the 'new' Michael's need for human contact.]

[N] (WHISPERS) Okay.

Nikita steps into his arms and they begin to slow dance. However, Nikita appears very ill-at-ease. Before she can stop herself, she reaches out and brushes Michael's hair off his face, then tentatively rests her hand on his shoulder. [I loved how, from the moment she realized Michael's memory was gone, Nikita hasn't been able to stop touching his face and hair. It's almost as though she felt that this might be her only chance to freely communicate through touch - so important to Nikita (and Michael, judging by the way he strictly limits physical communication with her).]

[M] (WHISPER) Thank you.

As they dance, Michael moves Nikita closer to him, studying her face. Nikita is looking off to the side, trying to ignore his scrutiny. She finally closes her eyes, unable to meet Michael's gaze, her hand still fluttering on his shoulder. Michael takes this opportunity to lean over and gently kiss Nikita on her cheek. Nikita immediately pulls away.

[N] (WHISPER) Please don't.

[M] (WHISPER) Why not?

A sad expression appears on Nikita's face as she reaches a moment of truth - she wants HER Michael back, not this gentle and dependent man before her now. [Again, the wishing thing; this Michael is as caring and demonstrative as Nikita's ever wanted ..., and all she wants now is her uncommunicative and stone-faced Michael back.]

[N] Because this isn't who you are ....

This Michael, unlike his other self, accepts her rebuff, and simply rests his head on her shoulder, accepting whatever comfort Nikita is willing to give him. They are interrupted by the sound of a phone ringing. Nikita immediately breaks away to answer it. Michael stands where she has left him, uninterested in who could be calling. Nikita picks up a cell phone lying on her couch and holds it out to Michael.

[N] It's yours.

Michael takes it, but doesn't answer it. His face shows panic at talking to someone other than Nikita.

[M] What do I say?

[N] Just agree.

[M] (INTO PHONE) Yeah. ... Uh-huh. ...

Michael hangs up, looking worriedly at Nikita.

[N] They want me to come in.

[N] Well, we've got work to do.

Nikita apparently has given a great deal of thought of what to do next.

SECTION / OPERATIONS' PERCH

Operations is pacing and glancing at his watch, obviously impatiently waiting for Michael. Michael slowly enters, seemingly 'himself.' Operations hears Michael and turns to face him.

[M] You wanted to see me?

Operations moves over to his window and looks out while discussing the reason he called this meeting. Michael joins him at the window.

[O] We're converging on Perez. But we have a couple of options. ... I'd like your input.

[M] (NODS) Of course.

SECTION / WALTER's AREA

A worried Nikita is pacing around Walter's area, waiting to speak with him - she needs to ask a favor. Walter is back in his supply room.

[W] (CALLS OUT) I'll be right with you, Sugar.

While Nikita waits, she removes her sunglasses and peers up into Operations' office, trying to see if she can tell whether Michael is having trouble hiding his memory loss from Operations. Nothing seems to be amiss, so she turns back to Walter as he joins her. He drops one of his gadgets on the work table and turns to Nikita.

[W] Okay, what's up?

Nikita joins him at his work table and hands the vial of Michael's blood to him.

[N] I need you to run something for me.

Walter studies the vial, not, as yet, picking up any concerned vibes from Nikita.

[W] Yeah, what for?

[N] Not sure. ... Maybe a psycho-tropic agent of some sort. Something that could interfere with memory.

Walter is peering at the vial, and asks, almost absentmindedly.

[W] Who's blood is it?

[N] Does it matter?

[W] Well, I've gotta know whose baseline to pull, so I can get a Delta.

Nikita hesitates a moment, then confides in Walter.

[N] Its .. M-Michael's.

This answer stops Walter in his tracks. He hesitates a moment, thinking about the implications, then starts to move away. Nikita grabs his arm and exchanges looks with him. He realizes she is silently asking him to keep this to himself, and gives her a small nod of agreement.

SECTION / SYSTEMS

Birkoff is manning the hologram, as Operations and Michael look on. Michael is obviously struggling to keep up the pretense.

[B] We don't have confirmation, but there's a good chance Perez is hiding out in a private club in Lukenwalde, Germany.

Birkoff pulls up a schematic of the club.

[O] How good?

[B] Point seven-five. The problem is, if he isn't there and we go in, we lose our advantage.

A puzzled expression appears on Michael's face and he asks a question before realizing the implications.

[M] What's our advantage?

Operations shoots Michael an impatient look.

[O] (SNAPS) The deal. They'll know we're onto the deal.

Michael nods.

[B] On the other hand, if we don't pick up Perez soon, we'll have to rely on our Field Ops, who are already on the seams of their covers.

[O] Those systems will be untrackable if we don't find Perez in the next eighteen hours. ... We've got to make a choice.

Operations pauses and looks over at Michael.

[O] Michael?

Michael hesitates, not sure how to answer the question. He looks down at Birkoff, who has just disengaged the club's hologram.

[M] (TO BIRKOFF) What do you think we should do?

Birkoff looks up, wondering why Michael is asking his advice.

[B] What do you mean?

Operations is starting to become suspicious of Michael's 'lapses' and begins to study him.

[O] Michael. ... Are you all right?

[M] I'm fine. ... I'm just saying its not a ... subjective call. We should let the computer do an analysis.

[B] An analysis? You mean a sim?

[M] Yeah ..., a sim.

[B] I did.

[O] And?

[B] According to the numbers, there's a three percent advantage to going in.

[M] (UNDERTONE) Three percent. (NORMAL TONE) Then, we go in.

Operations seems mollified, but he is still watching Michael carefully.

[O] Okay. Put together your Team.

Michael nods his assent and leaves Systems. As he departs, Operations' face shows he is becoming suspicious of Michael's reactions.

SECTION / COMMON AREA

Michael enters the Common Area, then stops, obviously lost. Nikita has been lurking around the entrance to one of the corridors waiting to escort him back to his office. When she sees Michael, she starts to approach, then stops and moves back into the corridor when she sees Operations and Birkoff enter together, then split up and move in different directions. Nikita waits until they have left the Common Area before joining Michael and quickly herding him off.

Michael first enters a wrong corridor, then walks past his own office.

[N] (WHISPERS AND MOTIONS WITH HER HAND) Michael.

Nikita takes Michael's arm and gently guides him inside.

SECTION / MICHAEL's OFFICE

As soon as Nikita shuts the door, Michael tries to speak to her. She quickly hushes him by lightly placing her hand over his mouth, then walks around his desk to pull out the keypad that secures the room. As she keys in the code, Michael questions her.

[M] What are you doing?

[N] Securing the room. (BEEP SIGNALING THE ROOM IS SECURE) Okay, now we can talk. ... What did Operations say?

Michael leans against the table located next to the door, beginning to panic in earnest.

[M] (PANICKY TONE) I can't do this, Nikita. ... They're ... going to find out. Ah, I don't know what I'm doing.

[N] Just do what I tell you.

[I'm willing to bet this is one phrase Nikita LOVED telling Michael. How many times has he said the same thing to her?]

[M] But for how much longer?

[N] Walter's gonna know something when he analyzes the blood.

[M] And, if it's not the blood? ...

Nikita says nothing, unable to tell him what he needs to hear.

[M] I - I can't go through with this.

Michael straightens and stands in front of Nikita. She sees what is happening and tries to calm him down.

[N] Yes, you can.

[M] (DESPERATE TONE) No, I can't. I've got to get out of here.

[N] You'll never make it. They'll find you.

Michael begins pacing in front of Nikita.

[M] How do you know?

Nikita motions with her head.

[N] Take a look around.

Michael turns and briefly looks out the window, before coming to a stop in front of Nikita and gazing down at her as her leans on his desk.

[M] (TAKES DEEP BREATH) Well, you told me they were going to kill me anyway. ... I've got nothing to lose.

Nikita looks at Michael's back as he begins to pace again, and a lost look appears in her eyes.

[N] I do.

At her tone, Michael turns to look at Nikita. Before he can say anything, however, a voice on the intercom breaks into their conversation.

[MO] (VOICE) The Mission's loading, Michael.

Nikita immediately reaches over and releases the security screen. She then straightens and walks over to Michael. Michael is frozen, unable to say anything.

[MO] (VOICE) Michael?

Nikita meets Michael's gaze and mouths for him to say "Okay."

[M] Okay.

Michael looks at Nikita. He's lost and hasn't a clue what to do.

[N] Let's just get through this. ... We'll figure something out.

Michael nods and follows her out the door.

SECTION / VAN ACCESS

Michael is standing at his usual position - beside the inner portal watching as the Team Operatives file past him. Nikita is the last Team member through, and gives him a reassuring look as she passes him. Michael waits a second, then follows her down the accessway.

LUKENWALDE, GERMANY
EXTERIOR - MEN's CLUB / DRIVEWAY

Michael, now dressed as a businessman, arrives in a black Mercedes. Nikita, acting as his driver, pulls to a stop in front of the entrance and turns to give Michael some last minute instructions. She takes a small Comm patch and attaches it behind Michael's ear.

[N] Use this to communicate with me. Stay on Channel C. I'll be the only one on it. ... Just make sure you remember to turn off your main unit when you're talking to me.

Nikita studies Michael's face and tries to instill some confidence in him.

[N] Trust your instincts.

[M] (UNDERTONE) Yeah.

Michael nods and moves to leave the car.

[N] Michael.

When he turns back to look at her she pulls out his special glasses and puts them on him. Michael quickly adjusts them.

[M] Right.

When Michael enters the club, he passes by our goateed friend, who has his back to Michael. While Michael is oblivious to our friend, Waldo makes several furtive glances behind him, trying to get a glimpse of him.

INTERIOR - MEN's CLUB / ENTRANCE HALLWAY

Michael enters (immediately looking around the room) and is greeted inside the door by the club's host.

[H] (TO MICHAEL) Mr. Bonniere ..., welcome to the club. Mr. Marquez speaks highly of you. If there's anything you want at all, please ask.

[M] Thank you.

[H] Would you like anything before you dine? Ah, a massage? A ... game of bridge, perhaps.

[M] Oh, ah ...

Michael is already stymied.

INTERIOR - SECTION / COMM

Birkoff is monitoring the Mission and frowns at Michael's hesitation.

[B] what are you waiting for, Michael?

MEN's CLUB / ENTRANCE HALL

Nikita realizes Michael doesn't know what to do and gives him a gentle push in the right direction.

[N] (VOICE) Michael, start in the library.

[M] The Library?

Michael catches the Host by surprise.

[H] Sir?

SECTION / COMM

Operations has joined Birkoff and they listen to Michael's faltering request.

[M] (VOICE) I would like to ah ...

[O] What's he doing?

[M] (VOICE) ... rest a while ...

MEN's CLUB / ENTRANCE HALL

[M] ... with an afternoon paper.

The host motions with his hand for Michael to precede him into the main foyer.

[H] Right this way, Mr. Bonniere.

[M] Certainly.

As Michael and the club's host enter the main foyer, a man who was reading a paper on a couch across the room, folds it up neatly and stands. You realize it is 'Where's Waldo' #2. He walks to the exit, passing and handing off the paper to his twin, who has just entered. In turn, his twin hands him a PDA he was carrying.

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff notes something on his monitor and contacts Michael.

[B] Michael, why aren't you isolated?

MEN's CLUB / STAIRWAY

[M] (UNDERTONE) What?

Nikita hears the exchange and tells Michael what to do.

[N] (VOICE) Get rid of the host. You're gonna have to go alone.

Michael forgets he's still plugged into Section and answers Nikita.

[M] (UNDERTONE) Why didn't you tell me that earlier?

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff hears Michael's question to Nikita and thinks he's talking to him.

[B] Tell you what earlier?

MEN's CLUB / STAIRWAY

[N] (VOICE) Michael, cut your main transmitter. The stem of your glasses. Now.

[M] (UNDERTONE) Oh, yeah.

He quickly cuts off the transmission to Section, but his last communication to Nikita was heard by the host and he gives Michael another puzzled look.

[H] I'm sorry, sir ...?

Nikita feeds more instructions to Michael.

[N] (VOICE) Tell him you'd like some privacy. Just ask where the library is.

[M] (TO HOST) I- I'm sorry. It's .. it's been a busy day. (SIGHS) Just-- just tell me where it is..

The host motions with his hand.

[H] It's just up the stairs, to the left.

Michael smiles to thank him, then moves up the remaining stairs and turns right into the upper hallway.

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff starts giving Michael directions on Perez's location, not knowing Michael has not turned his Comm unit back on.

[B] Okay, at the end of the hall turn right.

MEN's CLUB / UPPER HALLWAY

Nikita has to remind Michael about his main Comm Link.

[N] (VOICE) Michael, turn your main unit back on.

Michael switches it on in time to here Birkoff demanding to know where he's going.

[B] (VOICE) Michael?

[M] What? I'm here.

[B] (VOICE) What are you doing? ... I said turn right.

Michael is confused between Nikita's directions, and Birkoff's.

[M] But, he sa - he said the library was on the left.

[B] (VOICE) You're not going to the library. Perez would be one of the back rooms to the right.

Michael turns and doubles back down the hallway.

SECTION / COMM

After noting Michael is back on track, Birkoff gives directions to the rest of the Teams.

[B] Everyone to Second Mark. We're closing in.

EXTERIOR - MEN's CLUB / FRONT DRIVEWAY

Nikita hears the command, exits the car and races into the club via the back entrance.

INTERIOR - MEN's CLUB / BACK CORRIDOR

Michael has reached the door of Perez's room. He hesitantly reaches out and tries the doorknob - to find it locked. Again, he hasn't a clue what to do.

[M] Its ... locked. What should I do?

SECTION / COMM

By now Operations and Birkoff are looking at each other wondering what's the matter with Michael.

[B] (SARCASTIC TONE) Open it.

MEN's CLUB / KITCHEN

Nikita is entering through the kitchen. She hears Birkoff's direction, and once more tells Michael what to do.

[N] Michael, your U key. It's in your jacket.

MEN's CLUB / OUTSIDE PEREZ's ROOMS

Michael reaches in his jacket and removes the U key. His hands are shaking enough that he has to try more than once to insert the key. Once in, he slowly manipulates the key until he hears the click signaling the door is open. He opens the door and enters.

MEN's CLUB / PEREZ's ROOMS

Michael has entered a type of study. A fire is blazing in the fireplace, and three of Perez's bodyguards are sitting around reading or playing chess. [How do we know they work for Perez? Why, they have no hair, that's why.] As soon as Michael enters, they jump up, posed to attack.

[PB] (BELIGERENT TONE) How did you get in?

Michael looks uncertain.

[M] It was open.

SECTION / COMM

[PB] (VOICE) This room is occupied.

The camera in Michael's glasses pick up the bodyguards and Birkoff runs a check on them.

[B] Those are his men, Michael. Proceed.

MEN's CLUB / PEREZ's ROOMS

Michael, however, is terrified and can only reiterate his original excuse to enter the room.

[M] I'm looking for the Library.

Perez's bodyguard pick up his obvious fear of them and start to relax, thinking they just have a nut on their hands with no sense of direction.

[PB] (IRRITATED TONE) I don't know where the Library is. Ask someone out there.

SECTION / COMM

Operations' patience runs out.

[O] (TO BIRKOFF) What's he waiting for?

Operations grabs Birkoff's mic.

[O] Shoot the damn guards, Michael!

MEN's CLUB / PEREZ's ROOMS

Michael does nothing, just stands frozen in front of the door, staring at Perez's bodyguards. Perez unintentionally brings everything to a head by entering the room.

[P] What's going on?

When Perez sees Michael he immediately recognizes him and barks orders to his men.

[P] (YELLS) That's him! Shoot him!

As the bodyguards pull their guns to fire, Michael instinctively draws and shoots, taking out one of the guards. However, the bodyguard standing next to the hit guard takes this opportunity to shoot Michael. As Michael falls to the floor he is able to get another shot off, hitting the shooter. Another guard enters through a nearby door, and Michael - again on instinct - manages to kill him.

SECTION / COMM

Birkoff and Operations see and hear all hell breaking loose. Birkoff brings everyone in.

[B] (TO ALL TEAMS) Abort Surgical. Everyone in.

MEN's CLUB / VARIOUS HALLWAYS

All Teams leave their assigned positions and race to Perez's rooms.

MEN's CLUB / PEREZ's ROOMS

Michael, barely conscious, tries to crawl toward the doorway but starts to loose consciousness.

MEN's CLUB / UPPER HALLWAY

Perez's bodyguard hears the Teams approaching and guides Perez toward the main staircase. Unfortunately - for Perez - Nikita is in the process of lopping up the stairs and sees them. Before the bodyguard can get a shot off, Nikita shoots him and grabs Perez when he tries to run away. As they struggle, another bodyguard enters the hallway, but Nikita is able to shoot him as well. However, Nikita isn't concerned about Perez and pushes him toward the first Team member she sees.

[N] Take him

MEN's CLUB / PEREZ's ROOMS

Nikita charges in Perez's rooms and finds Michael on the floor, almost unconscious from loss of blood. She rushes over and kneels beside him.

[N] Michael! ... Michael, it me. ... Stay with me.

Nikita briefly cradles him in her arms, before helping him to stand.

INTERIOR - SECTION / SYSTEMS

Madeline and Operations are watching playback from Michael's POV Mission tape.

[PB] (VOICE) How did you get in?

[M] (VOICE) It was open.

[O] It's almost as if he didn't know what to do.

[MB] Or forgot. ... After Perez gave us the coordinates on the delivery system deal, I pressed him about Michael.

Operations turns off the playback as he can listens to Madeline.

[O] Why?

[MA] Walter found traces of some curious substances ... at the site of Michael's detainment.

[O] What sort?

[MA] Limbic suppressors.

[O] Memory?

[MA] It's possible. It would explain the recent behavior pattern that you've been noticing.

[O] If Michael's mind was tampered with ..., how could that have escaped us?

[MA] He had some help.

Operations exchanges looks with Madeline, knowing exactly who she is thinking about.

SECTION / WALTER's AREA

Nikita enters Walter's area to turn in her weapons and find out what the analysis noted about Michael's blood sample. Walter drops what he was doing as soon as he sees Nikita.

[W] (UNDERTONE) How's he doing?

[N] He'll be okay. What did you find out?

Walter pulls Nikita further into his area for some privacy and hands her a small vial.

[W] Get this into his I.V. bag ..., soon as possible.

Nikita holds it up and studies the contents.

[N] Does it work?

[W] I don't know but ..., we're running out of time. Madeline knows something's going on.

Walter and Nikita exchange looks, knowing they have to do something before Madeline interrogates Michael.

[N] How long does it take?

[W] At least eight hours. It has to saturate.

[N] Thanks, Walter.

As Nikita walks away, Walter calls out in a low tone.

[W] Let me know.

SECTION / MEDICAL

Michael is lying on a gurney, post-operative. A nurse is checking his vital signs as Nikita walks up.

[N] Could you give us a minute?

The nurse leaves. Nikita stands next to Michael's bed, gazing down at him. He seems to be either asleep or unconscious, his face turned away from her. Unable to stop herself, Nikita gently slides her fingers down the side of his face, but jerks her hand back when his eyes open and he turns his head to look up at her. When he sees it is Nikita, he gives her a sweet smile.

[M] How did we do?

[N] (SMILES) We did great. How are you feeling?

Michael thinks a moment.

[M] Okay, I guess.

[N] Good.

[M] (PAUSE) And they still don't know?

[N] No. ... But they will if we don't .. ah ..do something ..., soon.

Nikita pulls out a syringe containing the vial and shows it to Michael.

[M] Is it going to work?

[N] I don't know.

Michael pushes his head back into the pillow so he can watch Nikita inject the drug into his I.V., then turns and looks out into space, thinking.

[M] Have I ever told you I love you?

Nikita steps back from the I.V. bag and looks down at Michael, her expression reflective as she thinks back.

[N] Actually, no.

Michael gazes earnestly up at Nikita.

[M] (ALMOST A WHISPER) ... I do.

It is almost too much for Nikita, who gives Michael a small, sad smile. It's all she can do to press a kiss on the hand she's holding, before leaving Medical. Michael watches her leave. His expression seems to indicate he realizes that 'he' is about to disappear into the old Michael and wanted to give her something he knows the other Michael will not - honesty.

SECTION / HALLWAY OUTSIDE SYSTEMS

Operations and Madeline are talking about Michael and Nikita as they leave Systems.

[O] Did you follow up on Michael?

[MA] Not yet. He's still too groggy.

[O] What's the plan?

[MA] When he's strong enough, we'll test him thoroughly.

[O] Let them remain convinced that they fooled us.

Just then Russell passes them, smiling at Madeline.

[RB] Hi.

Madeline looks at Operations, her expression questioning.

[MA] I thought you sent him to Uzbekistan?

[O] I changed my mine.

[MA] Why?

[O] I took another look at his panel. He's still single sourced in some area.

[MA] (SMILES) Good for him.

Operations studies Madeline, and responds to her apparent indifference to Russell.

[O] I'm having Christopher prepare coq au vin a little later. Would you like to join me?

[MA] Not tonight, thank you.

With that Madeline leaves, taking the same route as Russell. This clearly was not the answer Operations had been expecting. He stands there thinking a moment, before climbing the nearby stairs to the catwalk running over the corridor. [Just want to take a moment to state my appreciation and awe of Billy Choi's computer magic. I loved how he designed the background so it looked like Section consisted of open levels flowing endlessly down.] As he stands on the catwalk, he hears voices. He watches as Madeline and Russell pass under him. Although he can't hear the conversation, they are obviously on very friendly terms. He realizes that, once again, Madeline has fooled him. While she may not be emotionally attached to this Operative, she obviously plans on making use of his 'talents.'

SECTION / MEDICAL

Nikita is sitting at the end of Michael's bed, eyes shut, waiting for him to wake up. When she hears Michael take a deep breath, she opens her eyes, then stands next to the side of his bed. Michael, still a bit groggy, looks around him. He tries to sit up, then stops, wincing in pain.

[M] Mmmm.

[N] How are you feeling?

[M] (DEEP BREATH) Like I've been shot?

Michael moves his head so he can look at Nikita.

[N] Yeah. You were shot on a Mission ... yesterday in Lukenwalde, Germany.

[M] Germany? ... No .., we were in Amsterdam. ... In a dance club ..., you were trapped in a room. ... I broke position, then ....

Michael closes his eyes and rubs his forehead, trying to remember what happened next.

[M] (SIGHS) Where's Operations? I need to debrief.

Nikita tentatively sits down next to Michael as she tries to explain to him about the past three days.

[N] Something happened, Michael. ... Um ... You were grabbed in Amsterdam and taken to Perez. He did something to your memory. You've haven't been able to remember who you were for the last three days.

Michael listens, his face showing no expression.

[M] Do they know?

[N] No, I protected you.

[M] Thank you.

Nikita's old Michael is back. His 'thank-you' is cold and unemotional. Nikita realizes this and immediately pulls back the hand she had lightly resting on Michael's arm. She knows that, his emotional walls firmly back in place, he would not welcome such attention. She stands and they study each other for a moment. When Michael says nothing further, Nikita realizes she has been dismissed and leaves. Michael watches her depart, then closes his eyes briefly, before opening them to stare up at the ceiling - clearly disturbed over what he might have disclosed to Nikita.
