OPENING SCENE:

(EMILY walks along a deserted road, her car ran out of petrol, she is carrying a petrol can looking for somewhere where she can fill it up)

CUT TO:
(JAKE climbs a ladder)

CUT TO:
[EXTERIOR: TOWN HALL: JERICHO: DAY]

(HAWKINS stands outside the town hall looking out into the open)

CUT TO:
(JAKE continues to climb)

(JAKE makes it to the top of the ladder)

CUT TO:
(GRAY walks up behind HAWKINS)

GRAY: Is there any sign of the SHERIFF MR. HAWKINS?

HAWKINS: No sir. I have to speak to your mayor. We got trouble coming

(HAWKINS glances up and walks inside the town hall)

(GRAY looks to see what HAWKINS was looking at)

CUT TO:
(JAKE looks out into the distance, he sees some clouds forming a ring)

JAKE: Oh my god

CUT TO:
(JAKE walks into the med. Centre, obviously looking for someone)

JAKE: Mom where’s APRIL?

GAIL: JAKE where have you been?

(JAKE continues to look for APRIL)

GAIL: She’s down the hall, what’s going on?

JAKE: Get dad on the radio

(JAKE continues down the hall)

CUT TO:
(APRIL is putting something on HEATHERS foot)

APRIL: You’ll be fairly mobile on it. How do you feel?

HEATHER: I feel like a bad ass

(JAKE walks in)

JAKE: APRIL, does the clinic have a fallout shelter?

APRIL: Yes, what’s going on?

JAKE: It’s bad, come on

(JAKE leaves and APRIL follows)

CUT TO:
[INTERIOR: TOWN HALL: DAY]

JOHNSTON: Jericho has two underground shelters, one right here under the town hall the over under the medical clinic

GRAY: What about basements? Storm cellars?

HAWKINS: They’re better than nothing, but you’ve got to seal off the rest of the house with, uhh, duck tape, plastic sheeting anything you can get your hands on

ERIK: How do you know about radiation MR. HAWKINS?

HAWKINS: Because I was a cop in St Louis and after 9/11 we got up to speed. So our biggest problem could be the rain

OFFICER: What? Will the rain clear the radiation out of the air?

HAWKINS: Yes and bring it straight down on Jericho. A direct concentrated hit, anyone exposed too long….

(HAWKINS dies out, everyone goes silent)

MAN: Mayor, sir

(The MAN hands JOHNSTON something)

JOHNSTON: Alright look, we’re going to divide the town in two, everyone over here (he points to the right of the map) can go to the town hall shelter all those on north side will go to the clinic. (To HAWKINS) how long till the radiation gets here?

HAWKINS: Oh I’m new here. This is your town, how long does it normally take for a storm to get here from Denver?

GRAY: About 2 hours

(People start commenting about this, unhappily)

JOHNSTON: I guess we have a lot of work to do guys

(MORSE CODE)

CUT TO:
[ONE OF THE TOWN SHELTERS]

ERIK: JAKE and I used to play down here when we were kids

JOHNSTON: I don’t think anyone’s been down here in 10 years

GRAY: How many people can we fit in here?

JOHNSTON: 300

GRAY: You do know that there is about 5,000 people in this town

JOHNSTON: ERIK, make sure people have basements they can use. We are not running out of room here today you understand

ERIK: Got it dad

(ERIK leaves)

CUT TO:
[EXTERIOR: JERICHO MED. CENTRE: DAY]

(JAKE tries to open the door to the fallout shelter)

JAKE: When was the last time someone was in here?

(JAKE gets the door open)

JAKE: You’re kidding me

(The fallout shelter is a mess)

APRIL: I can’t put people in here

(Their torch lights fall on rats)

JAKE: There’s no air in here, I hope the fan works. We’ve got a lot of work to do

CUT TO:
(EMILY is still walking along the deserted road)

(A police car drives along the road)

(EMILY puts her hand out, asking them to stop)

EMILY: Hey, hey!

(The car stops a few meters in front of her then reverses)

(EMILY runs up to them)

EMILY: Oh thank god, I haven’t seen anybody for hours, I ran out of gas, there are dead birds all over the road

OFFICER: Yea we saw them too, they must have flown through the radiation

EMILY: What radiation?

OFFICER: There was a mushroom cloud, somebody nuked us

EMILY: Oh my god

OFFICER: Look miss, we’re running low on gas, do you know if there’s a gas station nearby?

EMILY: Well, what do you think it is? Do you think it’s an accident or….

OFFICER: Ma’am we don’t know yet

EMILY: Did it come form Chicago? Because my fiancé came in from Chicago

OFFICER: No wrong direction, it looked more like Denver

OFFICER: Look we need gas, do you know if there is a gas station nearby?

EMILY: No the, the pumps aren’t working, they’re broken. You know, we, we could try the RICHMOND ranch they might have gas there

OFFICER: Get in, we’ll take you there

OFFICER: Miss! It’s okay, get in

(EMILY gets in)

(The OFFICERS nod at each other then drive away with EMILY in the back)

CUT TO:
[GRACIE LEES SUPERMARKET: DAY]

(GRACIE walks through the aisles of her supermarket and finds DALE asleep on the ground in one of the aisles)

(GRACIE kneels down beside DALE and wakes him up)

GRACIE: DALE, wake up. Wake up angel

(DALE slowly rises)

DALE: Mum?

GRACIE: Do you remember what happened last night? Your mums gone

(GRACIE puts a comforting hand on DALES shoulder)

(Someone knocks on the door)

MAN: GRACIE! Open up, GRACIE! We need to stock the shelters with food!

(SIRENS sound in the distance)

FIRE TRUCK RADIO: Attention! Attention! There is radioactive fallout coming from the nuclear blast! You have less than 90 minutes to get indoors, I repeat, you have less than 90 minutes to get indoors!

(People start taping up their windows and preparing for the radiation that is on its way)

RADIO: Use your basements, use duck tape or other tape to seal your home. You have less than 90 minutes. You can go to the shelter at town hall or the shelter at the medical centre, there is radioactive fallout coming! You have 90 minutes to get yourselves indoors

DRUNKEN MAN: We are indoors!

(People start laughing, they have obviously had too many drinks)

MARY: (To MIMI) You’re not from around here are you

MIMI: I came from DC to supervise a little Audit on a farm. Is god punishing me?

MARY: Look you should really get down to the basement at town hall

MIMI: You think

CUT TO:
[INTERIOR: MED CENTRE]

(JAKE walks down the hall, GAIL follows him)

GAIL: JAKE I’m not going anywhere

JAKE: Mom. Mom. I'm not going to argue with you. Go to the other shelter.

Gail: I'm staying!

JAKE: Mom I don’t even know if we can fix it and I cant concentrate if I know you’re here. Please, I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine

GAIL: Promise me you’ll come to the shelter after it’s fixed. Promise me!

JAKE: I promise mum

(They hug)

GAIL: I want both of my boys with me

JAKE: Okay. Go. Please mum

(GAIL walks away and JAKE limps in the opposite direction, his leg is obviously still hard to walk on after the accident)

CUT TO:

[INTERIOR: BAILEYS BAR]

(MIMI stares at the TV screen filled with static)

MARY: Frank! Quit messing with the TV. I don't want to waste my generator on static

ERIK: MARY, what are these people still doing here?

MARY: They won’t go. I can’t leave these clowns in my bar

ERIK: Alright listen up! Radiation’s on its way from Denver. If you don’t have a basement you need to make your way to the town hall there’s a shelter there

MAN: I’m not going to town hall

ERIK: You don’t have a choice people, your being evacuated

MAN: Well who are you

ERIK: I’m the deputy mayor

(People start laughing)

MAN: What, did your daddy make you a deputy?

MARY: Just forget it ERIK, you told everybody

ERIK: Do you realise a nuclear bomb went off yesterday

MAN: So, if I’m gonna die in a blast so be it I’ll be right here, playing pool with my buddies

ERIK: Your not gonna die in a blast, your gonna die from radiation poisoning. Within the first couple of hours your gonna be vomiting and have crippling diarrhoea your hair is going to fall off in big chunks, your skin is gonna blister your internal organs are gonna start to shut down because well frankly they’re gonna be cooked from the inside your gonna get sicker and sicker until you cant move and then your gonna die, over there on the floor by the pool table your bodies

(MAN leaves, ERIK has obviously gotten to him)

(ERIK leads MARY out back, they kiss)

(MIMI comes out of the toilet and walks through them)

MIMI: Ohh, don’t mind me

(MARY goes out)

CUT TO:
(The police car with EMILY pulls up outside the RICHMOND farm)

OFFICER: Sit tight, we’ll be right back

(The officer gets out, we see a tattoo on the back of his neck)

(The two officers get out of the car)

(Someone talks through the radio)

RADIO: SHERIFF come in. SHERIFF. Not a word from the SHERIFF since last night. There was a prison bus out there I uh think we better assume the worst. You're on your own. What about JIMMY or BILL? Deputies are missing themselves. You'll just have to handle this

(One of the OFFICERS opens the door)

OFFICER: Didn’t think we forgot you did you?

ROY: Don't think we forgot you did you?

EMILY shakes her head

ROY: Anything wrong miss?

EMILY: No... nothing. Doesn't look like anybody is here..

ROY: Well the pumps locked so...

EMILY: You know…. there is this other place that I could take you to

ROY: Look, we're running on fumes as it is

(THEY walk up to the door)

(The OFFICER knocks on the door)

(EMILY sees some blood on the OFFICERS collar)

(The other OFFICER is back at the car)

(The OFFICER opens the boot of the car, there are two men in there with tape over their mouths)

OFFICER: Make a sound….you die

EMILY: I’m sorry sir, I don’t think anybody’s home

(BONNIE walks around the corner with firewood in her arms)

BONNIE: MRS. SULLIVAN

EMILY: Hey BONNIE

CUT TO:
[INTERIOR: MED CENTRE]

APRIL: Oxygen tanks, IVs, all non medical supplies

DOCTOR: When was that written?

APRIL: 1957. The population of Jericho was 1000 people

DOCTOR: Let’s start moving everyone

JAKE: I’ll get the ventilation system fixed

CUT TO:
(JAKE is trying to get the ventilation system fixed)

JAKE: She threw everything

HEATHER: Mind if I pitch in?

JAKE: You know how to strip wires?

HEATHER: Ever since junior high

(JAKE looks at HEATHER for a while)

HEATHER: Yea, I was that popular

JAKE: Alright, great. Check the fan belt, I think it’s frayed

HEATHER: Okay, you might want to get another one. Any mid-century car would be a good match. And check the pressure, we don’t want the motor to heat up

JAKE: Alright, you take over, I’ll look for a fan belt

(HEATHER smiles and JAKE goes to look for a fan belt)

HEATHER: Excuse me, sir, your doing that wrong

CUT TO:
(JAKE walks up behind APRIL)

JAKE: APRIL!

APRIL: She thinks we shouldn’t move the baby

JAKE: Ma'am. Your baby is protected in this little bubble. She's got fresh air, and food. Right now she's the safest person in Jericho. But you're not. We need to make sure she has a mother to take care of her when this thing is over. Okay? Please! Please let us take you both down to the shelter. Okay? Okay...

(JAKE walks out and down the hall)

JAKE: BOBBY! BOBBY!

WOMAN: JAKE GREEN!

JAKE: Just a second

JAKE: BOBBY there’s….

WOMAN: I’m MRS. SULLIVAN’s aunt

(JAKE stops and turns around)

JAKE: MRS. DAWSON, hi

MRS. DAWSAON: Have you seen EMILY?

JAKE: No not since yesterday, maybe she’s at the other shelter

MRS. DAWSON: No one over there has seen her and she’s not at her house

(JAKE closes his eyes)

MRS. DAWSON: I’ve heard you were back in town and I figured you were the one person who would know

JAKE: I have to go. If I see her I’ll tell her you’re looking for her, I’m sure she’s fine

(JAKE continues walking)

CUT TO:
[INTERIOR: RICHMOND RESIDENCE: DAY]

OFFICER: So we’ll just uh use your pump and then be on our way

BONNIE: STANLEY has the key

OFFICER: What did she say?

EMILY: Uh, her brother STANLEY has the key

OFFIICER: Wait a minute, she’s deaf?

BONNIE: Yes. I read lips

EMILY: When do you think STANLEY will get back?

BONNIE: Another hour

OFFICER: Woah woah woah, what did she just say?

EMILY: It’s gonna be about another hour

OFFICER: Oh, we can’t wait an hour. Can we?

BONNIE: MISS. SULLIVAN are you alright?

EMILY: Yea I’m fine, just hungry

EMILY: Why don’t we make something for the officers?

OFFICER: Ohhh, I want eggs, It’s a farm house, you’ve got eggs right

OFFICER: Why don’t we uh all go make something to eat?

(They head to the kitchen)

(EMILYS eyes land on the frame)

CUT TO:
[TOWN HALL SHELTER]

Man on radio: At town hall?

JOHNSTON: Yeah, that's right. All those at the north of main street go to the medical centre.

GAIL: JOHNSTON!

JOHNSTON: Yea I know you want me to take it easy, I’ll just help ERIK get the supplies from….

GAIL: I’ve already sent people to do that

JOHNSTON: GAIL, who is in charge here you or me

GAIL: You do not want to play that game

MAN: This is every book in the library that we have about nuclear radiation.

JOHNSTON: (reading) Our friend the Atom.

GRAY: It's something, right?

JOHNSTON: Anything in here for grown ups? I'd like to know what we're supposed to do if this town gets hit.

MAN: None of the books is specific. Atom Bombs have only gone off twice in populous cities twice in history. And Denver was hit by a hydrogen bomb probably anyway.

GRAY: What's the difference?

HAWKINS: Hydrogen bombs... they literally explode the air.

GAIL: So what you're saying is... that nobody really knows what's coming.

JOHNSTON: Then we pick worst case scenario. What needs to be done.

MAN: Wait a second sir. I have that. let me just...

HAWKINS: Anything left outside will have to be scrubbed down. If it rains the uh the top 18 inches of soil or so will have to be removed before planting again. And tell everybody to cover all the water wells. That's about what it says, right?

MAN: Yes…. yes…. that's right.

JOHNSTON: Well you heard the man. Jeff, let's get all the ranchers to get the livestock inside.

HAWKINS: I'm going to work on the radio. This may be our last chance to make contact for a while.

JOHNSTON: There's a bunch of people in the church. They hold a vigil there all night. I'm going to make sure they get to shelter

GAIL: Hurry back

JOHNSTON: Yes ma'am

CUT TO:
[JERICHO MED CENTRE SHELTER]

HEATHER: I’m telling you they need to be replaced

MAN: Don’t tell me what to do girlie

HEATHER: Listen to me, the bushes it’s rubbing to high

(SPARKS come from it)

(JAKE walks in)

JAKE: Turn it off!

(JAKE tries to turn it off but it’s too hot, he pulls his hand back, it started to burn)

(JAKE hits it with something, we can’t make out what)

(APRIL enters, bringing in more people)

APRIL: JAKE everyone’s ready, what do we do now?

JAKE: Don’t let them in here!

APRIL: The rain’s going to be here soon, people are getting scared, do we have air in here or not?

(JAKE bends over)

JAKE: Seal them up in here and they die

CUT TO:
JAKE: (ON RADIO) Dad! Dad can you hear me?

ERIK: (ON RADIO) Dads checking on the church JAKE what do you need?

JAKE: Our shelters no good, I’m taking these people to town hall

ERIK: JAKE, hold on, I don’t know how many more people we can hold

ERIK: What about their basements?

JAKE: They don’t have basements that’s why they came here

(APRIL walked up and took the radio off JAKE)

(JAKES eyes go wide)

APRIL: ERIK, we have 200 people here, some of them need medical attention. Handle it!

ERIK: I’ll get to the town hall soon and see how much room we have

(APRIL smiles)

ERIK: I’ll call you back

APRIL: I don’t have time, I’m coming

(APRIL hands the radio back to JAKE)

APRIL: (TO JAKE) Sorry. My husband needs a kick sometimes

JAKE: (GETTING ON BUS) You don’t have to apologize to me

CUT TO:
[EXTERIOR: TOWN HALL: DAY]

ERIK: I have to get to the shelter bring everything you can

GRACIE: How much more do you need?

ERIK: Enough to feed half the town

(PEOPLE are taking food out in boxes)

(GRACIE is packing some more food into a box)

LISA: SKYLAR, you have to come to the shelter

SKYLAR: I’m not going to some stupid shelter, I’m going to wait for my parents to get home

LISA: Don’t be crazy

SKYLAR: I’m not crazy, I’m going home!

GRACIE: Excuse me ladies, are you going to pay for that?

(They have a can of diet cola and haven’t paid for it)

SKYLAR: What are you talking about, everybody’s taking stuff

GRACIE: This is still my store

SKYLAR: Alright, you know what, fine, keep it

LISA: Her parents are in New York okay, who knows if they are even gonna be back?

LISA: (PUTS THE CANS OF COLA ON THE COUNTER) It was just a couple of cans of soda

GRACIE: Yea but it’s my soda

CUT TO:
(BONNIE and EMILY are cooking some food on the stove top)

OFFICER: I say we head east

OFFICER: She was headed east wasn’t she? (TO EMILY) Hey, how far would you say from here those crows were?

EMILY: About 5 miles west from where you picked me up

OFFICER: Yea then we’ll go north

(EMILY does something in sign to BONNIE so the OFFICERS can’t see)

OFFICER: Hey! You wanna help me out with this coffee?

EMILY: I’ll show you where it is

(EMILY leads him away)

CUT TO:
(HAWKINS tips some wires out of a brown paper bag)

GRAY: You better get down to the shelter, that wind is moving faster than we thought

HAWKINS: I’m watching it, just get everybody underground

GRAY: You know, if you get that thing to work do me a favour and find out who did this to us

(GRAY walks out with a box of something)

(HAWKINS continues what he was doing)

CUT TO:
(The school bus turns around a corner, JAKE is driving some people to the other shelter)

MAN: (ON RADIO) ERIK come in

ERIK: This is ERIK

MAN: There is a few bus loads coming to town hall

CUT TO:
(School buses pull up outside the town hall)

(APRIL gets out of the front bus)

(ERIK runs out)

ERIK: Woah woah woah, people do not get of this bus we cant take you

JAKE: ERIK what are you doing?

ERIK: They cant come in here JAKE

JAKE: What do you mean they cant come in here?

ERIK: We’re packed!

JAKE: What! We’ve got a bus load of people here who need shelter

APRIL: Are you really gonna turn away all these people ERIK? Are you gonna turn away your wife?

GRAY: We let all these people in we’ll suffocate

APRIL: ERIK! There are really sick people here and the storm is coming!

ERIK: We can take 10 and I saved a spot for you

JAKE: Alright, the 10 most critical, fast. GRAY! The salt mine how many will it hold?

GRAY: Well as many as you want but I don’t think….

CUT TO:
OFFICER: That smells good

(The OFFICER goes to pour himself a drink of coffee)

EMILY: Oh no, I’ll get it

(EMILY pours his drink but not concentrating on it, they smile at each other)

(EMILY moves the coffee jug and spills some on his arm)

OFFICER: DAMN IT!

EMILY: I am so sorry!

OFFICER: Damn it

EMILY: it's bad. Look go in the kitchen right now and run cold water over it, it'll stop the blisters. I'll clean up this room.
