Scene: Accident site.

(It's a car accident. Lots of flashing lights again.)

Dispatch voice: Multiple vehicle accident. Multiple injuries. 14th and Lincoln.

(Tyler and Hank are treating one patient.)

Hank: Heart rate's one twenty. Let's get him on the monitor.

Tyler: I think it's a compound fracture.

Hank: Keep breathing. Lots of deep breaths, Sir.

(Cut over to an angry driver. He's yelling at the patient Val and Jamie are treating.)

Truck Driver: Beat the truck huh? That's all you guys ever think about is beat the truck!

Jamie: Hey man, step back!

Truck Driver: Hey, listen! Let me tell you something, I pay taxes alright! I work hard and all day long I gotta deal with bus bombs always in a hurry.

Val: (Gets in the guys face. Calmly.) Sir, you're really gonna have to give us some room here.

Hank: Val, I need the saline IV!

Truck Driver: I don't have to do anything for you. This is a free country. You know what that means? FREE SPEECH! (Val cringes. He's yelling about two inches from her face.) Do you hear me?

Hank: Val! Now!

Val: It's alright. (Picks up a bag and walks away.)

Jamie: Free?! Look, you interfere with an EMT on duty, you pay a thousand dollar fine, you got that?! You got that, Sir?

(Cut over to Val, Tyler and Hank. Val hands Hank an IV.)

Val: Here. You're good to go.

Jamie: Do you hear me?!

Truck Driver: Yeah, I hear ya.

(Cut back to Val, Tyler, and Hank.)

Hank: Val, I asked for saline. That's dextrose. (Hands the IV back.)

Val: What? (Checks the label.)

Scene: Station rec room.

(Val's pacing. Tyler in a desk chair. Hank's on the couch and Jamie's sitting on something.)

Val: I can't believe I did that. I mean I've hooked up an IV bag what, maybe a hundred times?

Tyler: Val, we caught it. The patient wasn't harmed.

Val: Yeah but Tyler, what if he had been? Man, I can't believe I blanked like that.

Hank: Okay, here's the problem. You're human. Okay, humans make mistakes Val.

Tyler: The point is, everybody goofs once in a while. Everybody.

Alex: Hey guys! This report is wrong. It says that you gave oxygen for a laceration. Val, these are you initials. Would you fix it please? (Hands the report to Val and leaves.)

Tyler: You were freaked about the IV, truck driver was in your face, don't worry about it.

Val: Oh man.

Alex: (Turns around.) And Jamie, I'm gonna need you official decision sometime this week. (Jamie nods and Alex leaves.)

Hank: Official decision. That sounds heavy.

Jamie: Yeah well, you know it's not a big secret. My community service is up at the end of the month so Alex just wants to know whether or not I'm gonna stay on the squad.

Tyler: And you are of course.

Hank: It's a no brainer, right?

Jamie: No. Not really.

(The other three look at him.)

[Opening Credits]

Scene: Sidewalk by station.

(Caitie and Jamie are walking together.)

Jamie: (Sarcastically.) Oh, it was a stellar shift. Besides the enraged truck driver we had a woman who got hysterical over a bad manicure and a flu case whose breath was so bad it could strip paint.

Caitie: The sacred squad. Saving mankind one pathetic loser at a time.

Jamie: Yeah, that's not the worst part either. Alex already posted the duty roster. I'm scheduled to work Monster Motocross Weekend and the night of the Dead Executives concert.

Caitie: Okay listen. Um, I moved planets to get us those tickets Jamie, okay, so you're not ditching me.

Jamie: Well I can't get anyone to sub for me. We're already short handed. And that's it, I stick with the squad, there goes my life.

Caitie: Yeah, okay listen, here's my question: Um, why are you even thinking twice? Look, ditch the geeks, you've done your time.

Jamie: Well that's just it. I mean, I put a lot of hours in here. (Stares at the building.)

Caitie: What, what is this place? A medical cult? First it enslaves my best friend and now my, my backup best friend falls under it's evil spell. (Sees Jamie staring.) Hello! Um, you are allowed to walk away. You know, you never wanted to be here to begin with, remember?

Jamie: It's not who I am, is it?

Caitie: No.

Jamie: I mean it was a sentence. I served my time. I don't owe them anything.

Caitie: Exactly.

Jamie: Well that's it. I'm gonna finish up the week and then I'm done. I'm out of here.

Caitie: (Pleased he sees things her way.) Alright.

Jamie: You know. . . maybe.

Caitie: Okay, that's it. Um, I'm hiring a deprogrammer.

Jamie: Ah, save your money for Dead Executives T-shirts. I'll see ya. (Walks towards the station.)

Scene: Alex's office.

(Brooke enters. She's got a cell phone clipped to her sweatshirt and an ear piece in her ear.)

Brooke: Amy? Can you hear me now? (Pause.) Wow, it even works in Alex's office. You are so lucky to have this phone. I want one so badly, but I might as well ask my dad for a sports car. (Sets some folders down on Alex's desk. She sees his phone and picks it up.) Oh my gosh. Alex got the Call Matrix 2000 SL complete with interface cradle. (Flips it open.) You'd spit on yours if you saw this. It's smaller than a checkbook and it does everything. Telephone, PC, internet connection, pager.

Alex: (Comes in.) Hey Brooke, what are you doing?

Brooke: Sorry, I was just-

Alex: So who are you talking to?

Brooke: Amy. Uh, we were doing homework and since we're not supposed to use the station phone for personal calls, she loaned me her cell.

Alex: And what are you doing with mine then?

Brooke: Ugh, drooling over it. I've never seen a 2000 SL in person before.

Alex: (Takes the phone from her hands and puts it back in the cradle.) Brooke, this is a very expensive, highly delicate piece of equipment. I don’t want anybody touching this, including you. Okay?

Brooke: Right. No touching. Gotcha. (Into the cell microphone.) A phone like that is so wasted on Alex.

Scene: Street corner.

(They're outside a store. Wind is blowing. A sign is swinging from above the door. A man is sitting on the curb being treated. Everyone is yelling to be heard over the wind.)

Store Owner: This huge wind came out of nowhere! The sign was blowing around like crazy so I came out to take it down!

Jamie: Yeah, but it took you down first, huh?! Awesome! (Laughs until Hank gives him a look.)

Val: Were you knocked out, sir?!

Store Owner: No, it just grazed me!

Tyler: Do you feel dizzy or nauseated?!

Store Owner: No! Man, do you believe this wind?! The homes have gotta be damaged all over town!

Hank: Okay, Sir, I'll clean these cuts and take you to the ER for stitches and a concussion check! But not here!

Jamie: Hey, I vote we move this party to the ambulance!

Hank: (Considers it.) Okay! Tyler, get him up! (They help the Store Owner stand up.) Okay, get in the front! Val, grab the jump bag!

(She turns back to pick it up. The wind rips it out of her hands and it opens. Everything spills everywhere as she tries to grab it. Tyler sees.)

Tyler: Val leave it, we'll use the spare! Come on!

Scene: Alex's office.

(Brooke is still on the phone to Amy and she's filing stuff.)

Brooke: Can you believe this wind? There's trees down everywhere. The airport's closed and half the town is blacked out. (Pause.) Oh, tornado warning? Well, I haven't heard any. (Sees Alex's phone and picks it up.) But I could find out. The Call Matrix 2000 SL has wireless internet weather service. And it says severe storm warnings and tornado watch. Oh man, he's got Bugopolis and I bet he's never even played it. (She starts playing.) Don't you love that little larva king? Uh oh, here comes the woodpecker. Quick, burrow. (Turns serious.) Oh, my gosh. It, it just froze. I think I crashed his 2000 SL. And it's stuck on Bugopolis, I am so busted.

Scene: Outside ambulance.

(Hank climbs out of the back of the ambulance. Val and Tyler are standing there.)

Val: Hank, I'm, I'm really really sorry about that jump bag. I'm, I'm gonna make sure everything is replaced.

Hank: Hey V, we all know the rules. It's cool. But uh check with Alex, maybe there's an exception for natural disasters, alright? I have to make a pit stop, I'll be right back.

Val: He must think I'm such a fool. (Sits on the bumper of the ambulance. Tyler sits nest to her. She sighs.)

Tyler: No he doesn't. I mean we all go through rough spots.

Val: Huh. Yeah right, rough spots.

Tyler: You know what you need?

Val: What?

Tyler: A good luck charm. A lucky penny. It helped my get through some rough spots. (Takes is out of his pocket.) Reminds me to believe in myself.

Val: (Looks at it.) Is it from the year you were born or something?

Tyler: No, actually it's uh, from the year you joined the squad. Must be a good omen.

Val: Wait, your lucky penny is from the year that I joined the squad?

Tyler: Yeah. Go figure.

Val: (Takes the penny from him.) Thank you.

Tyler: No problem.

Scene: Ambulance.

(Hank's driving. Jamie's got shotgun. Val and Tyler are in the back.)

Jamie: Man, this storm is a disaster.

Hank: Yeah man, kinda like your jokes. (Jamie laughs.) Look, in case you forgot man, the call are run by the senior EMTs. Which you aren't.

Dispatch Voice: Vehicle one-five-six. Call. Over.

Hank: (Picks up the radio.) This is vehicle one-five-six. Over.

Dispatch Voice: Possible toxic fumes. Multiple victims. 996 Ridge Road. Can you respond? Over.

Hank: This is vehicle one-five-six. We're on it. (Hangs up the radio and flips on the sirens.)

Stock Shot: Ambulance driving down the street. Day.

Scene: Alex's office.

(Brooke is still on the phone with Amy and she's holding Alex's phone.)

Brooke: Hit what? (Pause.) Are you sure? (Pause.) Okay, here goes nothing. (Presses a button and the screen goes blank.) It went dead. No, the screen is totally blank. I think we killed it.

Alex: (Off screen.) Brooke!

Brooke: Oh, here comes Alex, I'll call you back later. (Takes the ear piece out of her ear and puts Alex's phone back.)

Brooke: Hey, we've got a lot of storm related calls coming in. I'm gonna need you to set up the duty rosters for the back up squads if this weather keeps up much longer. (Sits down at his desk and reaches for the cell phone.) I'll check the forecast. (Flips the phone open.) Oh man, this thing is completely dead!

Brooke: (Nervously.) Really? Gee, that's a surprise.

Alex: (Looking through the users manual.) Customer service, customer service. I paid way too much for this phone to break down. (Picks up his desk phone.)

Brooke: Is that the instruction manual? (Takes it and sits down across from him.) Um, maybe it's just jammed and we need to reboot the whole thing.

Alex: It was fine when I put it in the cradle five minutes ago and now it's broken. How can it be jammed? (We can hear a busy signal on the other end. Alex is getting angry.) Busy. Probably because everybody's calling in to complain. (Hands Brooke a notepad and a pen.) You know what? We're gonna write a letter, that's an even better idea. (Brook nods and gets ready to write.) To whom it may concern. Regarding your overpriced Call Matrix 2000 SL that you falsely advertised as reliable.

Scene: 996 Ridge Road.

(There's a mother and two children outside. They're coughing. The ambulance pulls up and the squad runs over.)

Jamie: Ma'am, what happened? (Val, Hank and Jamie run to the family. Tyler runs up the front porch.)

Mrs. Powell: I don't know. Maddy and Gina said they were dizzy and then I felt it. (Coughs.) I, I couldn't smell anything. We all have colds.

Tyler: Hank, it's gas. (Gets off the porch.) It could blow any second.

Hank: (Guiding the family.) Let's move, let's move let's move.

(They all crouch down behind the ambulance. There's an explosion inside the house that rocks the ambulance. Tyler and Jamie stand up to look at the house. There's flames on the window sills.)

Mrs. Powell: (Looking around frantically.) Where, where is she? Where, where's Chelsea? Where? (Runs towards to house.) Chelsea? Chelsea? Chelsea. Chelsea.

(The squad runs after her.)

Hank: Ma'am. Ma'am. (Tyler and Hank grab her arms to stop her.)

Val: Ma'am, ma'am?

Mrs. Powell: Chelsea. My six year old. I thought, I thought she was with us but. . . (Strangled cry.) She's not here. (Puts her hand to her mouth and starts crying.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene: 996 Ridge Road.

(Hank's on the radio. Mrs. Powell has calmed down a bit now.)

Hank: This is vehicle one-five-six. We need fire rescue. Dispatch, do you copy? (No answer.) Dispatch, please respond.

(Val is talking to Maddy and Gina.)

Maddy: We were playing in the basement. I told her to come upstairs. She was hiding. (Mrs. Powell puts her hands on her daughter's shoulders.)

Mrs. Powell: I was coughing. I couldn't see. I thought that see was with us.

Val: We're, we're calling the fire department right now. They'll, they'll find her for you.

Mrs. Powell: What if they don't? What if there's another explosion?

(Tyler and Jamie join her.)

Tyler: Okay. We hosed off the fires in the windows and I think we turned off the gas valve. It was kind of bent.

Jamie: The kitchen is totaled. The rest of the house looks okay except for the smoke.

Hank: (Joins them.) Bad news. The storm downed a bunch of power lines, there's like a million accidents, tons of calls and I can't get through to the fire department.

Mrs. Powell: (Panicking.) No, no no you have to. They have to get my daughter out!

Val: Ma'am, we're gonna keep trying, okay? We're gonna keep trying.

(A neighbor leads Mrs. Powell, Gina and Maddy away.)

Tyler: Guys, how long is this gonna take? She might be injured in there.

Jamie: Man, we have to find her.

Hank: Look, first of all we don't do rescues. Second of all we're not even sure if she's even in there.

Val: Where else would she be?

Hank: It could be unsafe. There could be structural damage. The place could come down around our ears. There could even be another explosion.

Jamie: All the more reason to get her out then, right?

Hank: (Hesitates a few seconds.) Alright, we're gonna go in. (He stops Jamie from going towards the house.) Tyler and me! I do not want to risk any more of us than I have to.

Scene: Basement.

(The place is filled with water. A pipe burst. Toys are floating. The fuse box sparks. The guys come down the stairs with flashlights.)

Tyler: Chelsea, are you down here?

Hank: The explosion must have burst the water main. (There's a little girl sitting on a table on the opposite side of the basement as the stairs. There's at least a foot and a half of space between the water and the table.) Chelsea?

Chelsea: I can't get down.

Tyler: Hey. Hey, that's okay. We'll come to you. Emergency Medical Services. I'm Tyler and this is Hank. (Moves to go get the girl. Hank grabs his arm to stop him.)

Hank: Tyler! The power is still on. If anybody touches the water, bad news.

(More sparks.)

Tyler: Chelsea, don't move.

Hank: (Urgently.) And whatever you do, do not touch the water. Do you hear me? Don't touch the water. We're gonna get you out as soon as possible. (To Tyler.) We need the fire department. I gotta go get them. (Gets up.)

Tyler: (Grabs Hank's jacket.) Whoa, whoa, whoa, somebody needs to stay here and talk to her. (Jamie and Val open a window.)

Hank: Hey uh, Chelsea, these are our friends.

Jamie: Hey Chelsea, how's it going?

Val: Chelsea, I'm Val, this is Jamie. We're really glad you're okay.

Hank: Listen Chelsea, Val and Jamie are gonna stay with you until we get the fire department, okay? But remember, don't touch the water. Okay?

Chelsea: (Weakly.) Okay.

Scene: Ambulance.

(Hank's on the radio.)

Dispatch Voice: (Static.) Until the obstruction is cleared, we can't give you an ETA.

Hank: (Dispatch starts to break up.) Stay with- Dispatch stay with me. Dispatch, I'm losing you! (Hangs up the radio. Mutters.) This is crazy.

Tyler: (Dialing a cell phone.) My phone just melted out too. The whole system's overloaded.

(Jamie runs up to them.)

Jamie: Hey, what's taking so long?

Hank: I thought I told you to stay by the window.

Jamie: Yeah, well the mom is back there and she's freaking out. She just wanted me to check.

Hank: Trees are down everywhere, okay? Fire rescue said that they can't get their equipment in here until they clear an oak that fell at Main and Grand. It's blocking two streets.

Jamie: You're kidding?!

Tyler: No. It gets worse. Phone lines are jammed and we can't find anyone who can shut the power and water off.

Jamie: Guys, the water is rising. Now the kid, she's trying to be cool but she's really scared. I don't know how much longer she can hold on.

Tyler: Hank, it might take them an hour to get through the tree. Maybe two.

Jamie: Hank, trust me. We don’t have that much time. Look, okay, it's against the rules, I know. We don't do rescues. The guys who do may never get here!

Hank: You're right. There's nobody else.

(Tyler and Jamie leave.)

Scene: Behind the house.

(Hank and Jamie are looking for long planks of wood.)

Hank: Okay, I think these can work.

Jamie: Well they better because I don't have any other ideas.

Hank: Look Jamie, maybe you shouldn't be doing this?

Jamie: Excuse me?

Hank: It's dangerous. You know, essentially we could be risking our lives and if you're gonna leave the squad anyway. . .

Jamie: Is that why you've been on my case? You think I'm going to desert your precious team-

Hank: Now see, that's your business, okay. I just don't want anybody involved in this who's not totally committed.

Jamie: Hank, as long as I'm here, I do the job. (Grabs a plank of wood and walk away.)

Hank: This isn't part of the job, Jamie! (Grabs the other plank and follows.)

Scene: Basement.

(They've got the planks stretched from the stairs to the table. Chelsea is against the wall.)

Val: You guys, she can not cross that by herself. One of us is going to have to go over there and get her.

(Tyler and Jamie speak at the same time.)

Jamie: No problem.

Tyler: I'll go.

Hank: Overruled. I'm doing it.

Jamie: I say we take a vote.

Tyler: Wait a second.

Hank: No arguments. I'm senie, it's my call.

Chelsea: The water's getting higher. (It about 2 inches below the table top.)

Val: Okay, just stay still honey. Hank's on his way right now.

(Hank stands on the boards and uses a ceiling rafter for support. The boards start to creak under his weight.

Jamie: Whoa, stop Hank! Get off. You're too heavy. Come on. (He goes back to the stairs.)

Hank: Okay, if I'm too heavy then you are and so are you. (Points to Tyler and Jamie.)

(Tyler and Jamie look at Val. She looks scared, like she's dreading going across. She looks over at Chelsea. Cut to a few seconds later. She's kneeling down by the planks. She takes off her helmet.)

Tyler: Hey, you can do this. You're the best. You got a lucky penny. (He takes her helmet.)

(Val starts crawling slowly. She stands up to use the rafter like Hand did but thinks better of it and kneels back down again. When she reaches the other side Chelsea hugs her.)

Val: Hey, hey Chelsea. Wow, you are really really really brave. That's how come I know you can do this, okay? And you don’t have to worry because you're not gonna fall. I'm gonna be your safety net. Okay? (Val brushes her hair aside and so does Chelsea.) Okay, I need you to crouch way way down there, okay? (Guides Chelsea to the planks.) Way way down. Okay? And we're gonna go really really really slow. (Val positions herself so that she's behind Chelsea and her hard are by Chelsea's.) Ready? When I say one, you're gonna move this arm and this leg (Touches the right side.) And when I say two, it's the others. Ready?

Chelsea: Ready.

Val: Okay, we're gonna go really really slow. And if you want me to stop. . . just yell out. . . stop. Okay?

Chelsea: Okay.

Val: Now. . . one. Two. (They move.) One. Two. One. Two. One. (Val moves but Chelsea hesitates and Val stops her hand right before it touches the water.)

Chelsea: Stop!

(Jamie catches his breath and Val grips the side of the plank.)

Val: It's okay. It's okay. We'll just do a little at a time, okay? Okay. (They start moving again.) One. Two. One. Two. (They reach the stairs and Chelsea reaches for someone's hand.)

Scene: Out front.

(The come out the front porch. Hank's carrying Chelsea wrapped in a blanket. Everyone starts shouting when they come out. Hank passes Chelsea off to Mrs. Powell. She takes her daughter. They guys start congratulating Val all at one.)

Tyler: You were the best.

Jamie: That was incredible.

Hank: Incredible. Incredible. (Takes off his helmet.)

("Pioneers" By Roberta Michele plays.)

Val: It must have been that lucky penny. (Pulls out the lining of her pocket. There's a hole.) Hey, it fell out.

Jamie: So much for luck.

(Val hugs Tyler and is half crying and half laughing. Hank joins the hug. Jamie falls back. He watches them, the sees Mrs. Powell hugging her kids. He looks sad. (And really, really cute in my opinion.) He gives kind of a half, bitter sweet smile in their direction. He looks back at Tyler, Hank and Val. Hank motions toward him.)

Hank: Come here, man. (Jamie smiles and joins the group hug. Hank and Tyler hug him. Val probably would have, except she's sandwiched between Hank and Tyler.)

Scene: Alex's office.

(He and Brooke are trying to get the phones working. She's got the cell.)

Alex: Anything? (Brooke shakes her head.) Nah, me neither.

Brooke: And dispatch still hasn’t been able to get them on the radio.

Alex: You see that's why I got this stupid phone in the first place. It's supposed to have state of the art uplink technologies for situations like this. And instead I got kids out there and I can't even reach 'em. (Throws the phone away.)

Brooke: Alex it's my fault. I broke the phone.

Alex: What?

Brooke: Before. When I was filing. I was just gonna check the weather but then I saw Bugopolis and the woodpecker was coming and it's all my fault. I'm so sorry. (The cell phone rings. Alex takes it out of the trash.)

Alex: Hello. Hello. Hello? (It's still ringing. Brooke silently takes it, press a button and hands it back to Alex.) Hello? Hank. Is everything okay?

(Cut to hank at the ambulance.)

Hank: Yeah, yeah, we're okay. But I tell ya, it's been a day we'll never forget. (Looks behind him where everyone is standing in a group. He laughs. Alex says something that we can't hear.) Yeah, see you soon.

Alex: (Over phone.) I'll be here.

Hank: Yeah. (Hangs up.)

Scene: Sidewalk outside station.

(Caitie and Jamie are walking.)

Caitie: Okay that's it. Jamie, you, you've lost it. You are certifiable. No sane person would stay on the geek squad of their own free will.

Jamie: Who said I was sane?

Caitie: No no no, no see, this is mind control. They planted a chip in your brain. Val's probably had one for years.

Brooke: (Runs into them by the garage.) Hey guys.

Caitie: Hey. What are you so amped about?

Brooke: Alex punished me for messing up his cell phone.

Jamie: That's a good thing because. . . ?

Brooke: Well, I had to apologize for the angry letter and admit that I'm the one who crashed it. But, when they found out I was a kid, they were upset that I had trouble. And the next thing I know, they send me this phone, just to find out how I like it.

Jamie: What? So you get the Bat-Mobile of cell phones totally free just because they care what a twelve year old thinks.

Brooke: Mmm Hmm. They said if kids can't work 'em, who's gonna teach the grown ups? (Jamie shrugs. He can't find a flaw with that. Brooke laughs.)

Scene: Sidewalk in a neighborhood.

(Val and Tyler are walking together. Val looks at him and laughs.)

Tyler: What?

Val: You made up all that stuff, didn't you? About that lucky penny. You just did it to. . . get my confidence back up.

Tyler: Well. . . yeah. ("Trust Your Gut" By Ameila's Dream plays.)

Val: Yeah. (Laughs again.)

Tyler: Sorry, I just thought it might be a good idea.

Val: No don't. Don't apologize. That was (Puts her hand on his arm.) that was. . . incredibly sweet. (They stop and face each other.) It was really sweet. (She hugs him. Their eyes meet and they stare for a few seconds. Tyler kisses her hesitantly. He pulls back a little, unsure if that was the right thing to do. They kiss again. Longer this time. They break apart and smile.)
