- - - Recap- - -
Shot of ambulance driving.
Hurt Construction Worker: I need a real doctor! I'm gonna die.
Tyler: Sir, we'll get you to one as soon as we stabilize you.
Val: If we don't treat you now, you'll bleed to death
---
Caitie: Kay! (Slams her locker.) It's been tons of fun, okay, but we live on two different
planets. I think that makes the friendship null and void.
Val: So it's over, just like that?
---
Tyler:
Jamie:, what's the deal? You told me you bought a replacement.
Jamie:: I did. Somebody ripped it off.
Tyler: (Thinks
Jamie:'s lying.) Oh come on, we have a cone-napper?
---
Jennifer: You're bouncing him on a traffic cone?
Alex: I let him skate once, he was warned. (Both enter into an office.)
---
Val: Oh my God, daddy.
[Opening Credits]
Scene: Hospital waiting room
(Brooks and Joanna are sitting on a couch, leaning on each other. Tyler's sitting in a chair and Val
comes and sits on the arm of the couch.)
Joanna: What time is it?
Val: (Checks her watch.) It's after three. (To Tyler.) You don't have to stay.
Tyler: I know.
Doctor Pierce: (Comes out into the waiting room.) Mrs. Lanier?
Joanna: (Anxiously.) Yes?
Dr. Pierce: I'm Dr. Pierce. The attack was pretty severe. (Val puts her hand on her mom's
shoulder.) And there may be some damage to the heart muscle itself, we'll have to run some tests to find
out. For now I want to concentrate on keeping him stable to prevent any further damage or complications.
Joanna: So it's not over, he could still. . .
Dr. Pierce: Not if we can help it.
Scene: Hospital room
(Camera pans down a heart monitor, a steady beeping can be heard. We see Steve in bed with an oxygen
tube under his nose and Brooke sleeping with her head on her arms crossed over the back of a chair.
Joanna is watching her husband and Val puts a jacket over her shoulders and moves to stand next to Tyler.)
Tyler: Hey. You wanna talk? We can go outside.
Val: No, I'm okay.
(Camera pans back to Steve. A shot of Joanna looking at him. Back to Steve.)
Steve: Hey. (Shot of Val smiling.)
Joanna: (Strokes her husband's hair.) Hey, we're here.
Val: How ya doing Dad?
Steve: Day at the beach, kid.
Brooke: (Brooke wakes up and turns to look at Steve.) You're awake. It's about time. (Steve
smiles.)
Joanna: (Near tears.) I love you so much. (Kisses his forehead.)
Scene: Jamie is filling up the ambulance's gas tank
(Hank comes out of the gas station.)
Jamie:: (Sees the beat up car drives by again.) Hey! (Hank looks at him like he's nuts.) Hey!
(Jamie runs to the slowing car.)
(There's a man, Danny, in the car with a cone in the passenger seat dressed up and belted in.)
Danny: (Talking to the cone.) You wanna get a hotdog, cuz I, I. . .
Jamie:: (Knocks on the driver side window and Danny turns to face him and stops talking in the
middle of his sentence.) Pull in! That's my cone!
(Both Danny and Jamie stare in confusion.)
Scene: Steve's hospital room
(Brooke is looking in through the window. We can see Joanna sitting by Steve's bed.)
Brooke: (Sighing, walks down a hallway to where Val and Tyler are.) What if Mom makes us go
home? Dad still looks awful.
Val: (Puts her hands on Brooke's shoulders.) Brooke, he's gonna be okay, and he would not want
us to worry, right?
Tyler: (His pager goes off. He checks it.) Excuse me.
(Brooke drops Val's hand and watches Tyler walk off.)
Caitie: (Approaching them.) Val. I heard at school. I had to sell my soul for a ride over. Um,
how's he doing?
Val: Better.
Caitie: Good. That's really good.
(Camera cuts to Tyler on a pay phone. Val, Caitie and Brooke are still visible in the background.)
Tyler: No, I told you, Val needs me. I can't come home right now. (Sounds a little angry.) No,
you know what, don't put William on the phone. (A beat while his mom says something.) Because he's not
going to change my mind. Mom, I'm not coming home. (Hangs up and rejoins the group. He stands behind
Brooke.) Hey. (Looks around, puts his hands on Brooke's arms.) Come on Shorty, let's hit the vending
machines.
Brooke: Only if you're buying.
Tyler: Of course. Val, Caitie, something to drink?
Val: No thanks.
Caitie: Um, diet soda's a corporate plot. (Short pause. Tyler and Brooke leave.) I never meant,
we shouldn't, like talk to each other. (Sighs.) Look, you're the only other person I know who thinks
ketchup's gross, okay. You have to be in my life. (Val's grinning.)
Val: I'm sorry for what I said.
Caitie: Me too. (Awkward pause.) So should we, like, hug or something. (Val hugs her.) So what
if your friends think I'm terminally weird, I am.
Val: You are not.
Caitie: Wanna bet? Check this out. (Sticks out her tongue to show Val the stud.)
Val: (Looks disgusted.) Oh. (Shakes her head. Caitie takes the fake off.) Caitie! (Caitie
laughs.)
Scene: Gas station.
(Camera shows the cone in Danny's car, the pans out to see Danny, Hank and Jamie standing outside.)
Danny: This is Moe. And uh, oh and I've got Larry and Curly too. But they're uh, back at my
house right now, they're sleeping. They, they don't talk too much, but they listen real good.
Jamie:: (Like he's speaking to someone younger than him.) Uh, look, Danny. Moe's got a job.
He's one of our guys. (Puts a hand on Hank's shoulder to indicate the two of them for a second.) He
directs traffic, he keeps us safe. We need him. He'd love to hang out with you, but he can't.
Hank: And neither can Larry or Curly, alright? They all have to go back to where they came from.
Jamie:: We're sorry, man. We really are.
Danny: I uh. . . I don't have a lot of other friends.
Jamie:: (Pulls Hank aside.) Let him have it. I'll pay for another one.
Hank: No you wont! Alex'll have a meltdown and throw you out.
Jamie:: Look at him, there's gotta be something we can do. (Danny's holding the cone.)
Hank: Sorry. Undress the cone and put it back on the truck. Words I never thought I'd say.
(Walks away.)
Danny: (Mumbles something to the cone.)
Stock shot: Outside station. Night.
Scene: Station common room.
Music: Hello World by Belle Perez can be heard really quietly.
(Val is sitting on the couch studying, and Hank and Tyler are in chairs across from each other tossing
a football back and forth.)
Val: Hey, I thought you were supposed to be catching up on sleep.
Hank: When? I've got twenty four hours in a day and fifty things to do.
Tyler: So arrange your life better, man.
Hank: Who's got a life? All I have is a schedule. (Takes a sip of coffee and grimaces.) How
come the coffee only tastes good when Brooke makes it? (We see Val is playing with the magic eight ball.
In fact, they've all got school stuff out but none of them are actually studying.)
Tyler: Because she is good at everything, just like her sister.
Val: (Looks doubtful.) Right. I'm so good at math that Mr. Cohen almost pulled his hair out
trying to teach me algorithms.
Tyler: And he doesn't have the hair to spare.
Hank: You know 'Save the Whales'? You guys could start a movement too: Spare the Hair. (Tyler
just stares.)
Val: (Distracted by the Magic Eight Ball.) Right. (Realizing what Hank just said.) What?!
Hank: Spare the Hair. (Hank continues babbling, not using real words.)
Tyler: No no, that's terrible. That is terrible.
Hank: Whales?
Val: (Laughing.) Hey, we are supposed to be concentrating here. (Opens her book and sits up.)
Tyler: That's right. We're supposed to be uh, overachieving.
Hank: (Shot of Hank thinking.) Spare the Hair was kinda funny though, huh? (All laugh. Alarm
goes off. They all jump up. Tyler's trying to put his shoe on as he runs. He falls down flat on his face.
Hank exaggerates stepping over him) Good man, overachieve some more.
Scene: Accident site.
(Lots of flashing lights, a helicopter and lots of sirens can be heard. Two paramedics cross the
screen.)
Paramedic: Thank you, lets get moving, here we go.
(Jamie and Val are rolling a stretcher and Jamie looks like he's in shock a little bit.)
Val: Jamie come on, keep moving.
(Tyler and Val are at a car. Tyler's taking the pulse of the driver.)
Tyler: We got a pulse here!
Val: (Talking to a little boy in the car. Tries to be reassuring.) Hi, my name's Val. I'm with
Kingsport EMS, you're going to be okay. (She stands up so she's shouting over the car. There's urgency in
her voice.) Hank, possible spinal injury! we're going to need a backboard! (Everything moves in slow
motion as the camera cuts from Hank to the boy. Music plays. Giving this part sort of a calm, peaceful
feeling. Val interrupts and music stops.) Hank! (Tyler looks up.) Hank! (Hank snaps back to reality. Val
bends down to the boy. She's reassuring again.) You're okay.
(Firefighters break the back door of the car to get to the boy. A shot of Jamie closing the ambulance
doors. Pounds it twice. Spins around with his hands behind his head, looking overwhelmed. Music plays.
It's the same song that was for Hank and the boy but we actually hear lyrics now.)
Lyrics: (Slow and drawn out.) Take me away.
[Commercial Break]
Scene: Station parking lot. Night.
(Jennifer is leaving the building and Alex is getting out of his car.)
Jennifer: Hey.
Alex: Wh. . what are you doing? (Gestures to the files in her hands.)
Jennifer: I'm doing homework. Remember we talked about me looking over case files?
Alex: Those aren't allowed out of the building.
Jennifer: Oh. You never mentioned that. (The ambulance pulls in. Alex and Jennifer walk over.
Val gets out of the front and Jamie and Hank climb out the back. Tyler's driving.)
Jennifer: Hey, rough one?
Tyler: (Sullen.) MVA. Two dead, three critical.
Hank: (To Jamie.) Dump the trash, we'll help with the rest later. (Jamie walks off. To
everybody) Call critique, rec room, ten minutes.
Jennifer: Call critique? How do you. . .?
Alex: (Interrupting.) It's a group discussion to relieve the stress. I'm surprised Dr. Perino,
I thought you were cutting edge.
Jennifer: Jennifer. And I am familiar with call critiques, Alex. I actually taught a course on
them. I was just going to ask you how you run one.
Alex: I don't. The crew chief does. That rotates among senior squad members. Critiques are crew
only. (Sniffs the air and goes to the other side of the ambulance looking angry. Jamie's is leaning
against it smoking a cigarette. He stares at Alex like he's challenging him. Alex snatches it from
Jamie's mouth and throws the cigarette on the ground.) One: It's a disgusting habit. Two: You're breaking
a rule, break another one and you're gone. Clear? (Jamie Blows smoke in Alex's face and walks away.
Jennifer comes around the ambulance now.)
Scene: Rec room
(Val's pacing, Tyler's sitting on a ledge that divides two rooms, leaning against the wall. Hank's
sitting on a counter and leaning against some cupboards and Jamie's on the couch.)
Val: He couldn't be more than five.
Tyler: You know they're doing amazing things with spinal cases, he might be okay.
Val: Even if he is, who's gonna take care of him. His dad's a single parent and he's in
intensive care. He might not even make it.
Hank: That what social workers are for. They were ordered as soon as we left the hospital.
Val: Will they be there when he wakes up? If he wakes up?
Tyler: He's gotta have relatives. They'll find them.
Val: What if they don't?
Hank: (Yelling.) It's not our job, Val! And there's a big fat rule against getting involved!
Val: Well right now I hate it.
Tyler: Yeah, me too.
Hank: Yeah, me too. But we need it. If we tore ourselves up over every case we'd be burned out
in a month.
Val: That reminds me, what happened to you out there?
Hank: When?
Val: With the backboard.
Hank: Oh, no big thing, I zoned, I was short on sleep, I just checked out for a second. Won't
happen again.
Tyler: Hey, are you sure you're okay. I mean we could put you on the disabled list.
Hank: (Interrupting.) I'm fine. No problem. (To Jamie.) So how about you? That was a major
league call, what do you think?
Jamie:: Cool. Just like ER.
Scene: Outside station. Night.
(Jennifer's leaving the station. Sees Hank crying in his truck. They make eye contact. Hank starts his
truck quickly and drives away.)
Stock shot: Outside Exeter County Hospital.
Scene: Hospital reception desk.
(Hank is talking to the receptionist who's behind her desk at her computer.)
Hank: It was a car accident. The name's Revere. A father and son, I think he's about five.
They're both critical.
Receptionist: You're a relative?
Hank: I'm uh, close to the family.
Receptionist: How close.
Hank: Well, his. . . his dad's my uh. . . brother.
Announcement: Dr. Stevens line one, Dr. Stevens line one.
Receptionist: (Turns to computer.) What's the first name?
Hank: Hank. Oh, you mean their. . .
Receptionist: The little boy's or uh, the father's.
Hank: (Trying to think.) I'm uh, I'm not sure.
Receptionist: (Skeptic/Sarcastic.) Amazing. And you, so close to the family.
Hank: Look, I'm gonna be straight with you.
Receptionist: That would be a nice change.
Hank: (Sees Jennifer walk in.) I uh, have to go now.
Jennifer: Hank, what are you doing here?
Scene: Hospital hallway
(Hank and Jennifer are leaning against a window sill.)
Hank: It was the way he looked at me. And I, I dis Val for losing perspective and then I'm the
one who can't stop thinking about him. It's one little kid, and I could always keep a lid on it before.
What's going on with me?
Jennifer: Hank, give yourself a break. You care, that's, that's natural, it's a natural healthy
impulse. Listen, I'd be worried if you didn't.
Hank: (Mad at himself.) No, I was unprofessional. I tried to follow up. I broke the rule.
Jennifer: Okay, technically, yeah, you did. But look at the bright side, there's no one around
to report you.
Hank: You are sure not like Alex.
Jennifer: Thank you. Listen, I gotta get going, but uh, just know I'm always around if you need
to talk, okay?
Hank: Cool.
Scene: Inside station office
(Phone rings.)
EMT: Kingsport Emergency. Please state the nature of your emergency. (Val walks in.) Okay Sir,
can you tell if anyone is hurt?
Val: Alex? (He's sitting at a desk.)
EMT: Can you tell me where the accident occurred?
Alex: Hey. How's your dad?
EMT: Thank you. I'll contact the police immediately.
Val: He sat up and he ate some Jell-O. One day at a time, you know?
Alex: Yeah I know. How are you doing?
Val: I'm fine. I'm fine.
Alex: We could, we can talk if you want, we can talk. (Val steps completely into his office and
he closes the door.)
Val: They think that my dad's heart muscle might be damaged. Um, he might even need a
transplant. Alex, I really don't know what's going to happen. Everything's so weird, my mom is a total
basket case. Um, well, I. . . I think I might have to give up the squad.
Alex: Do you wanna give up the squad?
Val: No. I have put so much into this, and I still wanna go to med school.
Alex: Well then don't jump the gun. We'll , we'll put you on the DL for a week and if things
are still weird then, we'll see if we can work something out.
Val: Okay, I thought, I thought that nobody got special treatment.
Alex: Nobody does. Unless it's best for the squad.
Scene: Garage
(Jamie's taking inventory of the ambulance and Alex walks up.)
Jamie:: (Taps the clipboard.) Man, you were just waiting for me to crash and burn. You don't
think I can do this.
Alex: It's nothing personal.
Jamie:: Well. . . I can. And I'm gonna prove it, just to tick you off. (In a military voice.)
All cones present and accounted for, Sir! (Salutes and walks away. Alex smiles.)
Scene: Station area by kitchen
(Hank is studying and Jennifer walks into the kitchen.)
Jennifer: Hey, any word on Val's dad?
Hank: No, no, not yet.
Jennifer: I'm doing this study on pediatric ICUs, actually I got a tour at county's today. I
met this great little guy. Really together for a five year old. Sam Revere. He has spinal injuries from a
car wreck, but he's lucky though, I'll tell ya. (Hank looks up, more interested now.) None of the
vertebrae were broken, they don't even expect paralysis. A little bit of physical therapy, him and his
dad are gonna be okay.
Hank: Thanks for telling me.
Jennifer: What? I'm just making conversation.
Scene: Lanier kitchen
(Val walks in. She's on the phone.)
Val: Mom, I know. Lock the door, set the alarm, leave the light on. Don't worry about us, okay.
I love you too. And Dad. Bye. (We see Brooke in the living room working on a laptop. 'For He's A Jolly
Good Fellow' starts playing and Brooke hurries to close the computer.)
Val: What is that?
Brooke: Nothing.
Val: Come on, Brooke. It's my laptop. (Sits down and Brooke shows her.)
Brooke: It's a digital get well card. For Dad. With all the stuff we're gonna do when he gets
better. He can still take us to Yosemite, right? His heart's okay for that, like in a medical way?
Val: Um, they don't know yet. But Dad's a fighter, and they're doing everything they can.
Brooke: Swear as a future doctor?
Val: I swear. (They hear a knock on the door. Tyler waves from the window. Val gets up to let
him in.) Hi.
Tyler: Hi.
Brooke: (To herself.) Ugh, not again.
Tyler: I hadn't seen you that much this week.
Brooke: Scrabble anyone?
Tyler: (Like Brooke didn't say anything.) I though I'd come by to see how you're doing.
Val: Great. I mean. . . I'm. . . It's great that you came to see me.
Brooke: (Obviously ignored by Val and Tyler. To herself.) Great idea Brooke, why don't you get
the board?
Val: What is this? (Points to the box in Tyler's hand.)
Tyler: Well, I brought you something. You're probably going to think it's the ugliest thing
you've ever seen, but. . .
Val: (Opens it up and holds up a leprechaun on a snow-globe type thing.) Um, yeah.
Tyler: Yeah. Yeah, me too. But um, you know, he's a leprechaun. A good luck charm. My dad gave
it to me when I was six cuz I had my tonsils out. I thought maybe you could give it to your dad.
Val: That's really really nice of you. (Kisses him on the cheek.)
("Sent Down From Heaven" By Geoff Koch starts playing)
Tyler: So uh, you're doing okay.
Val: Yeah, I am. Now.
(Same song is still playing though the next montage of scenes.)
(We see Jamie in a store buying three traffic cones. Scene changes to Danny's front porch. He's holding
a dressed up cone and Jamie's playing the guitar. Hank's sitting on a couch by the door at the station.
He's studying. Jennifer looks in on him on her way out. Through the window we see Val, Brook and Tyler
playing scrabble.)
