(He watches as NICK and JESSICA hold hands.)
FRANK: I haven't seen her smile like that in a long time.

JIMMY LAMARR (CORONER): The suspect's name is Simon Dean.
(FRANK leans in close to examine the body.)

throat, choking him. FRANK fights to get out of SIMON'S grip. SIMON sits up
and continues to choke FRANK.)
SIMON DEAN: Storm's coming, Frank

(JESSICA talks with FRANK)
JESSICA: Lately, I've had this sense of dread. I just can't shake it.
FRANK: Well, maybe you just need to get away from it all.
JESSICA: I don't think I could get far enough.
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- DAY]
SIMON: What are we going to do about that bad feeling your wife's got?
(FRANK turns around.)

FADE IN.
[INT. BLACKHAWK'S -- NIGHT]
(FRANK walks down the stairs and into the bar. He picks up a handful of nuts
off the counter and pops them into his mouth as he continues through the bar.
MARCUS calls out to him.)
MARCUS: Hey, yo! Get me a burger, I'll be right there.
FRANK: Okay.
(FRANK sits down at the bar. ANNA stops by to get his order.)
ANNA: Frank?
FRANK: Anna?
ANNA: Dinner?
FRANK: Yeah, uh - Marcus wants a burger and um ... what are the specials?
ANNA: Beef stew.
FRANK: Is it any good?
ANNA: If you liked yesterday's pot roast.
FRANK: I'll take a burger.
ANNA: Okay, (she laughs) you got it.
(She leaves to fill the order. Sitting next to FRANK is a man in a derby and a
newspaper watching the races on the television.)
HERVE KRATZ: Yes! I'm invincible today! I can feel it.
FRANK: You got a lucky streak going on there, huh?
HERVE KRATZ: You trying to jinx me man?
FRANK: No, no ... all right.
HERVE KRATZ: You know, I've won the last five straight.
FRANK: Five straight. No kidding.
(On television: And the race starts!)
ANNOUNCER: And then there's Buried Treasure taking the lead ...
HERVE KRATZ: C'mon Buried Treasure.
FRANK: C'mon Grateful Dead.
HERVE KRATZ: Come on. That's it.
ANNOUNCER: And then there's Grateful Dead. He's swinging to the outside ...
HERVE KRATZ: That's right.
HERVE KRATZ: Come to papa.
FRANK: Come on. Get to the outside.
FRANK: Come on.
FRANK: Come on.
FRANK: Come on.
HERVE KRATZ: Yes!
(The MAN AT THE BAR kisses his lucky rabbit's foot then crosses off this circled
choice in the paper. Another win. FRANK watches him and smiles. He holds out
his hand.)
FRANK: My name's Frank Taylor.
(He doesn't take his hand, but does introduce himself.)
HERVE KRATZ: Herve Kratz. Good to meet you.
(FRANK picks up his beer and takes a sip. MARCUS walks into the room.)
MARCUS: A man is grinning away, so he must be winning.
FRANK: Marcus! Watch it!
(MARCUS takes the seat next to FRANK - right on HERVE KRATZ. HERVE KRATZ
disappears.)
MARCUS: What?
(FRANK looks around, a bit surprised to find that HERVE'S a ghost. He turns and
finds HERVE sitting on his other side, his eyes glued to the television set.
MARCUS points to the newspaper.)
MARCUS: Is this yours?
(HERVE glances at FRANK who sees all the potential in the newspaper. He reaches
for it.)
FRANK: It is now.
(FRANK takes out his phone)
FRANK: (to phone) Joe. It's Frank. Listen, is it too late to change the line
up of my bets here? (pause) Cool. Uh-Give me Fritzie's Folly in the seventh
on the nose. High in the Saddle on the eighth. Place. cheeseburger Bill on
the ninth and Nightly Ghost in the tenth on the nose. Double all my bets
without them and let them ride.
(MARCUS overhears and starts laughing.)
FRANK: (to phone) You heard me. Let them ride.
MARCUS: You must've lost your hardware today, eh, Frank?
FRANK: Oh, and Marcus wants you to match all of my bets for him, too.
MARCUS: What?! Are you freaking crazy? Now, call him back!
FRANK: I can't! Too late! Barely got it in.
(On the television set, the race starts.)
MARCUS: Thousand bucks!
(They watch the race and
FRANK: C'mon Fritzy! Run baby!
HERVE KRATZ: C'mon Fritzy!
FRANK: C'mon Fritzy!
FRANK: C'mon Fritzy!
MARCUS: C'mon! Now
FRANK: Yes! Yes!
FRANK: Bring it home! She's going to do it. Look. Look. Yes! Yes!
(The race is over.)
MARCUS: We won?
FRANK: Yes.
MARCUS: How much?
FRANK: Uh - Three thousand bucks.
MARCUS: Oh, yes! Now, call him back. Cancel the other bets, I want my money.
That's it.
FRANK: Oh, no-no. You've got to let it ride.
MARCUS: Look. Look. Frank, I'm grateful and all that, but three thousand
dollars -
FRANK: Three thousand is likely to become six, Marcus. On ... on "High in the
Saddle". All she has to do is place. Come on.
(Camera close up of MARCUS.)
FRANK: (urging) Come on.
(Cut to: [LATER] MARCUS, FRANK, HERVE and the entire bar is starting to get
into the races on television.)
FRANK: Come on!
HERVE: Come on
FRANK: Come in there.
FRANK: Yeah!
(And another win! FRANK and MARCUS high five. The place explodes in cheers.)
(HERVE kisses his lucky rabbit's foot.)
(Cut to: [LATER] The place cheers. MARCUS and FRANK high-five.
MARCUS: Drinks for everybody! Whoo!
(FRANK sits down to look at the newspaper.)
MARCUS: What? Three races in a row! That equals ... what!
FRANK: Nineteen thousand.
MARCUS: Nineteen grand! That it? I'm pulling out! I could buy a new bike
with that. Look. Call the man. Call the man. Tell him this rider's retired!
That's it, I am gone!
FRANK: No, we can't pull it out.
HERVE KRATZ: Tell your buddy: No guts, no glory.
FRANK: Come on, Marcus. No guts, no glory.
MARCUS: Screw that. I want my money.
HERVE KRATZ: Can't lose.
FRANK: Come on. Just one more race. We'll double it, man. We'll double it.
(The race starts.)
MARCUS: I can't see this.
FRANK: Come on!
FRANK: Come on!
FRANK: Come on!
FRANK: Come on!
FRANK: Get there!
(And the race ends, Nightly Ghost loses.)
FRANK: Aww!
HERVE KRATZ: I don't believe this!
(Everyone in the bar is stunned.)
HERVE KRATZ: (mutters) Damn. Never could pick that last race.
FRANK: Now, you tell me.
(FRANK sits down. HERVE stands up to leave.)
HERVE KRATZ: Well, easy come, easy go, eh. Look, I learned a long time ago, if
you take it too seriously,
(He takes off his hat and leans in close to show FRANK the bullet wound on his
forehead.)
HERVE KRATZ: ... the ponies will kill you.
(MARCUS approaches FRANK. FRANK reaches into his wallet to pay his bill.)
FRANK: Woah. Hey, uh. I hate to tell you this, old buddy, but, um, you bought
that round for the house just a little bit early.
(FRANK runs out of the bar. MARCUS chases after him.)
MARCUS: Frank! Come here!
MARCUS: Frank! Get back here! Hey!

ROLL TITLE CREDITS
INTRODUCTION:
FRANK: (v.o.) Two years ago, my son was taken from me. Since then I've lost
everything-- my job, my marriage, even my life. But I came back, and the dead
came with me.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. HALLWAY NEAR FRANK'S APARTMENT -- DAY]
(JESSICA sits on the steps waiting for FRANK. She gets up when she hears him
approach.)
JESSICA: Hi.
FRANK: Hi. It's a nice surprise.
JESSICA: I was thinking, we should talk.
FRANK: About what?
JESSICA: About dating. Other people.
(FRANK pulls out the envelope from his mail slot.)
FRANK: Oh, that talk. Okay. We can talk, but if we start getting sad or
uncomfortable, I'm going to argue.
(He unlocks the door.)
JESSICA: Why?
FRANK: Because I usually get my way when we argue.
(He opens the door and lets her inside.)
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT - DAY - CONTINUOUS]
(They walk inside and head for the office.)
FRANK: So, how's little Kathy Martin?
JESSICA: Good. She loves being at her grandparents' place. She said she's
already made two new best friends. She's going to be fine. You saved that
little girl's life, you know. She would've died out there in the woods, if you
hadn't saved her.
(FRANK opens the mail and reads the file folder.)
FRANK: Kathy's a brave kid. (surprised) Simon was a cop?
JESSICA: Simon Dean?
FRANK: Oh, it's just something different. Just an old case I've been working
on.
JESSICA: Canadian Bureau of Investigation?
FRANK: Just a background check.
(He puts the file aside and turns his attention to JESSICA.)
FRANK: So. Who's the guy?
JESSICA: His name is Nick. He's been working in the D.A.'s office for a couple
of months.
FRANK: Well, actually, his name is Nicholas Trenton. He's a year younger than
me, went to Columbia Law School, votes Republican, comes from old money, drives
a Jag and is in line for a job at the Shepherd and Laughlin Law Firm in New
York. (He sits down.) And from what I hear, he mountain bikes like a sissy,
too.
(JESSICA sits down opposite him.)
FRANK: I'm sorry. I added the sissy mountain biking part. Look, Jess. I want
you to be happy. Really, I do. But, I'm not going to lie. This isn't going to
be easy for me.
JESSICA: (crying) I feel like a horrible person. Like I'm turning my back on
Kevin.
FRANK: First of all, this has nothing to do with Kevin. And ... no matter
where Kevin is, right now, he knows that you're not giving up on him.
JESSICA: You know, when I was so worried about you last week, I spent a lot of
time up here thinking about you.
FRANK: And?
JESSICA: Look at this place, Frank? Look at what's become of your life.
(FRANK looks to the side and notices that the ghostly apparition of the file on
Simon Dean is being read, pages are flipping over one by one.)
JESSICA: You told me when you were stabbed and you lay dying, you saw Kevin on
the other side ...
(FRANK nods.)
(Quick flash of: [Scene from 1X01: Pilot] Kevin standing in the darkened
hallway. Flash of: FRANK standing in the dark hallway looking at Kevin. End
of flash. Resume to present.)
FRANK: Yeah.
JESSICA: It's just that wherever Kevin is right now, I refuse to believe that
it is a hopeless and dark place. So why would you look for him there?
(Quick flash of: [Scene from 1X01: Pilot] Kevin standing in the darkened
hallway holding out a hand to FRANK. FRANK stares at KEVIN in recognition.)
FRANK: (echo-y) No!
(KEVIN slowly turns around and walks away from FRANK with the last of the people
walking down the hallway.)
FRANK: (echo-y) Kevin?
(White flash to:
DOCTOR: (v.o.) Breath!
(End of flash. Resume to present.)
(FRANK looks at JESSICA.)
JESSICA: Whatever happened to you, Frank, isn't a curse, it's a blessing in
disguise. You made a huge difference in other people's lives and you made me
realize that there really is evil out there at work in the world. I believe
you've become an important part of that fight.
(She gets up suddenly and kisses him on the cheek. She heads for the door.
FRANK gets up and stops her.)
FRANK: Hey. When did you get so damn smart anyway?
(He takes a hold of her hand.)
JESSICA: Me? (She chuckles.) Smart? I just learned I'm dating a Republican.
(She turns and heads out the door. The door closes behind her.)
SIMON DEAN: (o.s.) How very touching.
(FRANK turns around and finds SIMON standing behind his desk.)
SIMON DEAN: It's too bad she got it all wrong. If you want to catch the bad
guys, you gotta live where they live, Frank.
(FRANK heads for the file folder. SIMON grabs his wrist before he can reach
it.)
SIMON: Careful, you don't want to open a door to the past you can't close.
Unless you don't mind me opening a door or two into your past.
FRANK: If you touch Jessica, I'll -
SIMON: You'll what? Kill me?
FRANK: Jess got it all right. No matter where Kevin is, he sure as hell isn't
where you are.
(FRANK reaches for the blinders.)
From now on if you want to talk to me, you're not going to have to lighten up.
(He pulls them open forcing SIMON to take a step back into the shadows. FRANK
pulls the blinders completely open.)
SIMON DEAN: Frank, I'm warning you. You stay out of my past.
(FRANK opens the next window blinders. SIMON disappears and sends papers flying
all over the room. FRANK takes a step back as everything falls to the floor.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[EXT. CITY (STOCK) - DAY]
[INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - MARCUS' OFFICE -- DAY]
(The door opens and a hand waving a white handkerchief pokes in through the
crack.)
(MARCUS looks up from his desk and notices FRANK out in the hallway.)
FRANK: You still pissed?
(MARCUS takes out his gun and deliberately puts it flat on the desk on the
folder he's reading. He keeps his hand on the gun.)
FRANK: Come on, you know what they say: Easy come ... Time to go.
MARCUS: You owe me one thousand, two-hundred fifty-seven dollars and thirty-two
cents.
(FRANK walks into the office and pockets the white handkerchief.)
FRANK: What for?
MARCUS: For the grand you bet on my behalf and the round of drinks I bought.
(He closes the door behind him.)
FRANK: Hey, if you're going to be a big spender, that's not my fault.
MARCUS Well, if you hadn't won nineteen grand, I never would have bought the
round in the first place.
FRANK: Oh, wait a minute. Are you blaming me for winning you nineteen grand?
MARCUS: I'm blaming you for losing it.
(FRANK sighs.)
FRANK: Look. I'll pay half.
(MARCUS gives in and nods.)
FRANK: Now. Come on. You're going to be late for your FBI appointment.
MARCUS: Uh-uh-uh. I don't have an appointment with the FBI.
FRANK: I know that, but they don't.
MARCUS: What?
FRANK: I needed a badge to get a meeting with one of their Special Ops people
for a case that I was working on. I told them I was you.
MARCUS: That's called Impersonating an Officer of the Law you can go to jail
for that Frank.
FRANK: Just relax. It's a lousy meeting.
(MARCUS sighs. He heads for the door, then turns around to FRANK.)
MARCUS: One thousand, two-hundred fifty-seven dollars and thirty-two cents.
FRANK: I'll pick up the tab.
MARCUS: And the grand.
FRANK: And the grand.
(MARCUS opens the door.)
FRANK: I've got this new line on a Philly ...
MARCUS: (chuckles) uh-hu-hu-hu.
(They head out the door.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. ROADSIDE -- DAY]
(NICK TRENTON parks his car and gets out. He's carrying a bottle of champagne.
He shuts the car door and heads up the walk. He knocks on the door.)
(JESSICA opens the door.)
JESSICA: Hey, I'm running a little behind. I got caught up in court. So, why
don't you just start it.
(He steps up and kisses her.)
NICK TRENTON: Did you win?
JESSICA: Yeah.
NICK TRENTON: Good. Then we have something to celebrate.
(He holds up the bottle.)
JESSICA: And what if I didn't win?
NICK TRENTON: Then, I'd work very hard to make you feel better.
(She chuckles and lets him inside.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. STREET -- DAY]
[INT. FBI BUILDING - DAY]
MONIQUE HOWARD: Detective Bradshaw?
(FRANK and MARCUS both get to their feet.)
FRANK/MARCUS (BOTH): Yeah.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Which one of you is Detective Bradshaw?
MARCUS: He is.
(She hands FRANK her card. FRANK makes the introductions.)
FRANK: I am. Um. Thank you for seeing us on such short notice. This is my
partner Frank Taylor.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Wow. I must say, Mr. Taylor, it's a pleasure to meet the man
who finally got Simon Dean. This way.
(She turns and leads them to the elevators. MARCUS motions for FRANK to go.)
(Cut to: Hallway.)
MONIQUE HOWARD: I'm surprised our counterparts in Canada allowed the LAPD to
reopen the Dean case. I mean, it was a huge thorn in the CBI's side.
FRANK: Well, according to the CBI report, the FBI was also involved in some of
Dean's covert activities while he was operating undercover in the U.S.
MONIQUE HOWARD: That's correct.
FRANK: Their official disclosure states that from May of 2000 to the time of
his death in 2002, Simon became rogue.
MONIQUE HOWARD: That's also correct.
FRANK: So, basically, he stopped reporting in and melted into the world of
child pornography here in the US. Can you tell us what he was working on?
MONIQUE HOWARD: Wait a minute. Can you tell me what you're working on.
MARCUS: Uh, well, uh ...
FRANK: Uh, well, it's a local thing.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Alexei Porchenkov.
(FRANK and MARCUS look at each other. FRANK nods.)
FRANK: Alexei.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Yeah. Well, we thought he was an extremely important link too.
Agent Dean followed his trail from a relatively small town child pornography
ring here in LA to a Russian cartel suspected of trafficking in the abduction
and sale of children.
FRANK: Excuse, Ms. Howard. I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you saying
that Simon wasn't a pedophile?
MONIQUE HOWARD: That's exactly what I'm saying.
(She turns and leads them down the hallway. MARCUS follows her. Confused by
this revelation, FRANK turns to follow and his bumped in the shoulder by someone
walking in the opposite direction. He turns around and sees SIMON DEAN walking
down the hallway.)
(FRANK stares at him.)
(He turns around, angry.)
SIMON: I warned you not to open this door, Frank. But, now that you have,
remember, it swings both ways.
MARCUS: Detective Bradshaw. You coming?
(FRANK turns around to find MARCUS hanging out the door.)
FRANK; Yeah.
(FRANK turns back and finds SIMON DEAN gone. He sighs.)
CUT TO:
[INT./EXT. JESSICA'S PLACE - OUTSIDE -- DAY]
(JESSICA and NICK TRENTON prepare for lunch.)
NICK TRENTON: Did you have that talk with Frank, yet?
JESSICA: Yeah.
NICK TRENTON: How'd it go?
JESSICA: Fine, I guess.
NICK TRENTON: You guess?
JESSICA: I guess you could say I took it harder than he did.
(He gives her her drink.)
NICK TRENTON: We'll go slow, okay?
JESSICA: Okay.
(They clink glasses and drink.)
(Cut to: Traveling low and fast across the streets and lawns, the camera moves
and searches for JESSICA'S house. We hear whispering as the entity sees the
house, passes NICK'S car parked along the curb.)
(It heads up the front walk toward the front door. The door opens. The entity
enters the house, goes through the dining room and out the back doors. The back
doors open and searches for them. It find NICK.)
(The glass smashes in NICK'S powerful grip. JESSICA gasps.)
(The champagne splashes on the front of JESSICA'S blouse.)
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): Oh, I'm sorry.
JESSICA: Quite a grip you got there.
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): Did I ruin your blouse?
JESSICA: No, it's okay. I'll get it. I'll be right back.
(She stands up and heads inside. NICK smiles as he watches her. He gets up and
follows her. He walks into the house and reaches into her bag to remove the
key.)
(He pulls out the key and we see SIMON DEAN smiling as he takes the key off
JESSICA'S key chain.)
CUT TO:
[INT. FBI - MONIQUE HOWARD'S OFFICE -- DAY]
(She takes out a file and puts it on the table.)
MONIQUE HOWARD: Simon Dean hated pedophiles with a passion. In fact, uh, from
the time he disappeared until the time he was killed, over fifteen known child
molesters were tortured and brutally murdered by him.
(She turns and sits down behind her desk.)
FRANK: Vigilante?
MONIQUE HOWARD: The speculation is that his frustration with the system and his
many years spent deep undercover probably forced him to disconnect with reality.
MARCUS: He wouldn't say?
MONIQUE HOWARD: In the last communiqué we received, he was referred to himself
as the Punishment Angel.
MARCUS: Punishment Angel. Never heard of him.
MONIQUE HOWARD: According to Apocryphyl writing, they are the angels who do
God's dirty work. The trouble is is he started punishing people who were only
suspected of child abuse. We believe that he's responsible for the murders of
two innocent people.
(FRANK'S phone rings. He answers it.)
FRANK: Excuse me.
(FRANK stands up.)
FRANK: Hello.
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): I warned you, Frank.
(FRANK walks out into the hallway.)
FRANK: Who is this?
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): (in SIMON'S voice) What's the matter, Frank? Don't
you recognize the stain of my voice? I just wanted you to know I won't be home
tonight.
INTERCUT WITH:
[JESSICA'S PLACE -- OUTSIDE]
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): I've decided to hang out with Nick and Jessica for a
while. Or should I say that I decided to hang out and BE Nick for a while.
FRANK: Wait, Simon.
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): It's too late. I'm going to punish your little
angel tonight.
(FRANK hangs up the phone.)
(NICK turns around as JESSICA walks out of the house wearing a different
blouse.)
JESSICA: There, better?
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): Much.
CUT TO:
[EXT. JESSICA'S PLACE - OUT FRONT -- DAY]
(FRANK'S car speeds up in front of JESSICA'S house. He parks and runs out of
the car. MARCUS gets out of the car also and calls out after him.)
MARCUS: Hey, Frank! Hey, why don't you slow down and tell me what the hell is
going on, all right?
[INT. JESSICA' PLACE - LIVING ROOM - DAY]
(FRANK enters the house calling out to JESSICA.)
FRANK: Jess? Jessica!
(He heads into the back yard where he sees NICK and JESSICA embracing.)
(FRANK rushes forward seeing not NICK, but SIMON DEAN with his arms around
JESSICA and smiling up at FRANK.)
(FRANK pushes JESSICA away from NICK and grabs him by his throat.)
JESSICA: Frank! What are you doing?
(FRANK hits SIMON DEAN in the face.)
(Various cuts of FRANK grabbing NICK TRENTON and SIMON DEAN'S throat and pushing
him up against the wall. MARCUS rushes forward to grab FRANK off of NICK, but
FRANK pushes MARCUS away from him.)
MARCUS: Come on. Get off of him!
JESSICA: Frank!
(FRANK pushes NICK into the table, then picks up a hammer and rushes forward
after him. MARCUS grabs FRANK from behind and holds him back.)
MARCUS: You don't want to do that. You don't want to do that. Put it down.
Look at her, man. She's fine.
(JESSICA kneels down next to NICK to check on him.)
MARCUS: Jessica is fine.
(FRANK relaxes and MARCUS lets him go. JESSICA stares at FRANK. FRANK turns
away, his hand on his forehead.)
FRANK: Oh, god. What have I done?
NICK TRENTON: I want him arrested. I'm pressing charges.
(JESSICA stares at FRANK.)
MARCUS: Come on.
(MARCUS puts FRANK in handcuffs.)
MARCUS: Come on. Let's go.
(JESSICA checks NICK as MARCUS leads FRANK out of the house.)
CUT TO:
[INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - HOLDING CELL -- DAY]
(The sign on the cell reads: CITY LOCKUP / POLICE ENTRANCE WITH PRISONER /
ONLY.)
(FRANK sits alone in the cell. MARCUS and JESSICA walk in.
MARCUS: You can go home. If you stay away from Jess.
JESSICA: I've asked for a Temporary Restraining Order.
FRANK: Jess. Please, you don't have to do that. I just want to talk to you.
JESSICA: Talk to me? I don't know who you are any more.
(JESSICA turns and leaves.)
FRANK: Jess. Jess!
(He turns and looks at MARCUS.)
FRANK: Well, don't just stand there, open the door.
MARCUS: I need your word first. If you go anywhere near her or Nick again,
your ass is right back in here in even bigger trouble than it is now.
FRANK: Marcus, you don't understand.
MARCUS: No, you don't understand. The man works for the D.A.'s office, Frank.
FRANK: Marcus. Let me out.
MARCUS: I'm sorry. But I'm going to have to ask you to gel here for the night.
Maybe that green eyed monster won't look so mean ...
(FRANK reaches through the bars and grabs MARCUS by his coat lapels.)
FRANK: (angry, desperate) You think this is about petty jealousy? Somebody
that I love is in danger and I need to protect them.
(FRANK lets go and sigh. He turns and paces the floor.)
MARCUS: And somebody I care about needs protection too, Frank. (beat) From
himself.
(MARUCS turns and leaves FRANK in the cell.)
CUT TO:
[INT. JESSICA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT]
(SIMON as NICK TRENTON walks up to JESSICA'S front door. He uses the key that
he stole from her and unlocks the door. He steps into the house and closes the
door behind him.)
(He walks in through the bedroom and lingers in the open bathroom door where
JESSICA'S taking a shower. He stands there watching her.)
(JESSICA turns the water off and opens the curtains. She gasps as she finds
NICK standing there staring at her.)
JESSICA: Nick, what are you doing?
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): Front door was open. So, I came in. Sorry.
(He doesn't move.)
JESSICA: Do you mind?
(He shakes his head.)
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): I'll be in the other room.
CUT TO:
[INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - HOLDING CELL -- DAY]
(FRANK paces the floor of the cell. He hears SIMON'S soft taunting laughter
echoing in the cell.)
SIMON DEAN: (echo-y) Good night, Frank. I know I will.
FRANK: Simon! Simon!
(FRANK helplessly stands in the holding cell unable to do anything but hear
SIMON'S laughter echoing in his head. He sits down and puts his head in his
hands.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[EXT. BLACKHAWK'S - DAY]
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- DAY]
(FRANK returns home. He unlocks his door and walks inside. He walks into his
empty office and calls out for his dog.)
FRANK: Gus!
(He whistles.)
FRANK: Gus!
(He checks his answering machine.)
(beep)
DEBORAH: (answering machine) Frank. It's Deborah with Littleton Mutual
calling ...
(He fast forwards through the message.)
(beep)
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): (answering machine) Hello, Frank. I just wanted to
say, there's no hard feelings. In fact, I don't know why I didn't think of this
sooner. I kind of like laying in the arms of a beautiful woman again. And just
so you know, Frank? I had a great night last night.
(FRANK rips the phone off the desk.)
FRANK: (shouts) Simon? I want to talk!
(He stands in the middle of the room and shouts to the air.)
FRANK: I know you can hear me. All right. I'll do it. I'll stop. No more
background checks. I will not investigate your past. Just don't bother
Jessica! Leave her alone!
(FRANK listens for a moment, then turns and grabs the file off of the counter.
He heads out the door.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. POOLSIDE -- NIGHT]
(FRANK walks around the side of the house near the pool. He looks in through
the back window and sees NICK TRENTON sitting in a chair in the living room.
NICK looks out the window and sees FRANK. He stands up.)
(FRANK walks over to the doors. NICK opens them and steps outside.)
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): Fish metaphor is kind of profound, isn't it, Frank?
Here I am on the inside of Jessica's world and there you are, on the outside.
FRANK: Leave her alone. Leave them both alone. I'll quit. You win.
NICK TRENTON (SIMON DEAN): (SIMON's voice) Say please.
(FRANK takes out the file:
CANADIAN BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
CONFIDENTIAL REPORT
PROSECUTIVE REPORT OF INVESTIGATION CONCERNING:
DETECTIVE SIMON DEAN )
(In front of SIMON/NICK, FRANK burns the file.)
(He tosses the file to the ground. NICK turns away. His face turns an ashen
color and SIMON DEAN steps out of NICK TRENTON'S body.)
(NICK shakes his head a bit, a little disoriented. Then turns and goes back
into the house.)
(FRANK turns to leave.)
(NICK closes the door behind him.)
(FRANK turns back and watches NICK sit down on the sofa, putting his hands to
his forehead.)
(With a final look, FRANK leaves.)
DISSOLVE TO:
[EXT. CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) - NIGHT]
[INT. FRANK'S PLACE -- MORNING]
(GUS hops on the bed and licks FRANK'S face. FRANK wakes up.)
FRANK: Oh, Gus.
(He pets GUS and groans.)
FRANK: I think we took this "let the light in" thing just a little too
seriously.
(He gets up out of bed and walks out of the bedroom.)
(Cut to: He picks up the morning paper from his doorstep.)
(The headline reads: VAN NUYS GIRL,9, ABDUCTED
By, Claudia Bennett
Chronicle Staff Writer
Possible Connection to Russian Cartel
"A nine year old Van Nuys girl was taken from her ... )
(FRANK sits behind his desk thinking, the article in front of him. He reaches
for the phone and makes a call.)
FRANK: (to phone) Marcus, Frank. Look man, um, I need a big favour. I need
you to call Monique Howard over at the FBI and tell her the truth. (pause)
Yeah. Maybe I am crazy, but I want that information that she has on Simon and
Alexei Korchenkov and I want it bad. All right. Thanks, man.
(He hangs up, sits back in his chair and looks at the newspaper article about
the abduction.)
CUT TO:
[INT. SECOND FLOOR -- HALLWAY - DAY]
(NICK TRENTON stands next to the courtroom door waiting for JESSICA. The
courtroom door opens and JESSICA walks out.)
NICK TRENTON: Jess.
(She turns around. They walk down the hallway together.)
JESSICA: Hi. What are you doing here?
NICK TRENTON: Waiting for you. I wanted to make sure everything was okay.
JESSICA: You didn't have to do that.
NICK TRENTON: You all right?
JESSICA: I think so. Well, a little confused maybe.
NICK TRENTON: About us?
JESSICA: Everything. I'm worried about the fight between you and Frank. And
to be quite honest, I think this is going too fast for me.
NICK TRENTON: Why?
JESSICA: You have to admit that you've been more than a little presumptuous
lately.
NICK TRENTON: Presumptuous?
JESSICA: I mean, you just walk into my house and watch me take a shower?
NICK TRENTON: (confused) Watched you take a shower?
JESSICA: My house key is missing from my key ring. Did you take it?
NICK TRENTON: Look, I really do want to patch things up with Frank, but if you
don't trust me, that's a whole different issue. Maybe we should just stop
seeing each other for a while.
(He turns and walks past her.)
JESSICA: Nick, wait.
(He stops and turns around.)
JESSICA: Maybe I'm just over-reacting. This whole "dating" thing is pretty new
to me. Maybe we both should chill out.
(He nods.)
CUT TO:
[INT. FBI BUILDING - HALLWAY -- DAY]
(The elevator bell rings and MONIQUE HOWARD steps out. She sees MARCUS and
walks over to him.)
MONIQUE HOWARD: Hello, "Frank". Or should I call you by your real name this
time, Detective Bradshaw.
MARCUS: I told you, I could explain.
MONIQUE HOWARD: For your sake, I certainly hope so.
(She turns and walks down the hallway. MARCUS follows her.)
MONIQUE HOWARD: I have only one question: why?
MARCUS: Helping out a friend. He needs the information.
MONIQUE HOWARD: You know, I told you the other day that I can't. Classified
reports. I should call your chief and have you busted down to a school crossing
guard. Why would you risk your career like this?
MARCUS: Because Frank has risked a lot more than a career for me over the
years. Many times.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Why would the man who got Simon Dean suddenly want the case re-
opened. The truth this time.
MARCUS: Frank lost his little boy a couple of years ago. Now deep down, I
believe, he thinks Simon was on to something.
MONIQUE HOWARD: Like Korchenkov.
MARCUS: He didn't have the name till you gave it to him, but - yeah.
MONIQUE HOWARD: All right. So, now Simon's gone - we'll never know what's the
connection was.
MARCUS: Look. I can't always say that I agree with everything that Frank does
...
(They stop in front of her office door. She turns to look at him.)
MONIQUE HOWARD: But you believe him, anyway?
MARCUS: We handled things badly. So all I can do now is ask for your help.
Unofficially, of course.
MONIQUE HOWARD: If I give you what we have on Simon, what do I get in return?
MARCUS: Lady, you get Frank Taylor, the best damn P.I. in the business.
CUT TO:
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- DAY]
(FRANK picks up the chronicle clipping photo of the missing girl. He tacks it
onto his bulletin board. He steps back, looks at it and sighs.)
(Someone knocks on his front door. He answer it and finds NICK TRENTON standing
there.)
NICK TRENTON: Can we talk?
(FRANK motions him inside. NICK steps inside.)
NICK TRENTON: I am ... uh ... not going to press charges. In fact, I don't
blame you for being so jealous. She's an awesome woman.
FRANK: What can I do for you, Mr. Trenton.
NICK TRENTON: Don't worry, Mr. Taylor. I didn't come here to make friends. I
came by to tell you that I know the score. Jess has told me about Kevin. And I
know how she feels about you.
(FRANK waits. NICK takes a breath.)
NICK TRENTON: I just wanted you to know that I plan to make sure when I'm with
her tonight, she whispers my name, not yours.
(FRANK grabs NICK by the lapels and slams him up backward against the wall.)
FRANK: Simon.
(FRANK lets go and steps back. NICK'S face turns ashen and SIMON DEAN steps out
of NICK'S body.)
SIMON: This is a test.
(FRANK stares at SIMON.)
NICK TRENTON: Please. Don't hit me. I'll leave.
FRANK: Look, Nick. It's not you. I guess I can't help myself. I'm a little
over-protective when it comes to Jess.
NICK TRENTON: A little? You're freaking dangerous, man. Psycho. (He taps his
temple with his finger.) Well, maybe you should think about getting some help.
(FRANK opens the door.)
FRANK: (mutters) You know a good exorcist?
NICK TRENTON: What?
FRANK: Look. Look, I'm sorry. I know what you're trying to do here and I
respect it. It took a lot of guts to come over here. We're cool. Really.
(He holds out his hand and shakes NICK'S hand. NICK turns and leaves. FRANK
closes the door.)
(He turns around and finds himself face-to-face with SIMON DEAN.)
SIMON DEAN: You know what your problem is, Frank? You're still trying to find
redemption in your work.
FRANK: Yeah. It's enough to make a sane man crazy. But, then I guess you'd
know all about that, wouldn't you, Simon?
(FRANK turns and heads into the office. SIMON is already there.)
SIMON DEAN: Careful, Frank. You forget I've seen your soul. You hate them as
much as I do. You and I are cut from the same cloth -
FRANK: I didn't torture and murder innocent people.
(FRANK walks over to the window and puts both hands on the counter, leaning on
them. SIMON turns to the bulletin board and takes down the clipping of the
missing girl.)
SIMON DEAN: You can't save them all. She was gone before the story hit the
newspaper. But together, you and I can make the bastards pay for what they've
done.
(SIMON tosses the clipping to the floor. It bursts into flame before it hits
the floor.)
FRANK: You want me to do what you did?
SIMON DEAN: The only fair justice is swift justice. If that was Kevin's
picture in there, would you turn the other cheek? I can help you use your
power, Frank. I can help you find Kevin.
(FRANK turns and looks at SIMON. The fax machine engages. FRANK looks at the
machine.)
(SIMON turns around and sees that the fax is coming in from the FBI. SIMON
reads it. FRANK heads for the machine, but he's too late from keeping it from
SIMON.)
(The fax machine stops. SIMON looks at FRANK as he reaches behind him and picks
up the paper.)
SIMON DEAN: (reading) "Frank, here's the info you requested on Simon Dean this
morning."
(The full fax reads:
Frank, Here is the FBI info you requested on Simon Dean this morning. I
don't know if this helps you at all, but let me know if I can give you a hand
[...] anything. Remember, you owe me big for this.
(SIMON thinks about it.)
SIMON DEAN: "This morning", Frank? We had a deal.
FRANK: The price was too high.
SIMON DEAN: You have no idea how high it's going to be.
(SIMON tosses the paper at FRANK. It explodes in a ball of flame mid-air.)
(SIMON disappears. FRANK steps toward him.)
FRANK: Simon, WAIT!
(FRANK looks around the office knowing that SIMON'S gone.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. JESSICA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM -- DAY]
(The phone rings. JESSICA crosses over to the kitchen to answer it. She puts
her valise down and picks up the phone.)
JESSICA: Hello?
FRANK: Jess, it's Frank.
JESSICA: Frank? I'm not talking to you.
FRANK: No, wait. Don't hang up on me. Please.
JESSICA: What do you want?
(He takes a deep breath.)
FRANK: Is Nick there?
JESSICA: That is none of your business.
(She looks over her shoulder at NICK as he walks into the room. She waves at
him.)
FRANK: Jess, just answer me one question. Does Nick act strangely sometimes,
like he's not himself.
(NICK walks calmly into the kitchen behind JESSICA.)
JESSICA: What do you mean?
(He quietly opens the drawers looking for something.)
FRANK: He's different. Cold. You don't understand it; you can see it in his
eyes. You can't trust him; he scares you.
JESSICA: Frank, I'm not going to play jealous games with you. It won't work.
FRANK: Jess. On Kevin's life, I swear to god, I'm telling you the truth.
JESSICA: What did you say?
(JESSICA turns around and sees NICK in the kitchen.)
FRANK: On Kevin's life, I'm telling you, you're in danger. Nick is not who you
think he is.
(JESSICA turns around again. She sees NICK reaching into the knife drawer and
pull out a large knife.)
FRANK: Jess. Get out of the house. Just grab your keys and get to the car.
(JESSICA drops the phone and runs.)
FRANK: Do you hear me? Run!
[SLOW MOTION CAMERA]
(NICK turns around and sees JESSICA run. He chases after her.)
[RESUME MOTION]
(FRANK yells into the phone.)
FRANK: Jess! Jess!
(JESSICA runs out of the house. NICK sees her leave and heads out the back door
to intercept her.)
(Cut to: FRANK grabs his things and heads out of the apartment.)
(Cut to: JESSICA gets into her car and closes the door. She puts the keys in
the ignition as NICK pops up from the back seat and holds the kitchen knife
against her neck. She screams.)
SIMON DEAN (as NICK TRENTON): You know, Frank doesn't believe in the church,
Jess. How perfect. How sentimental. Take me there. (shouts) NOW!
(Cut to: FRANK'S car guns down the road and turns into JESSICA'S driveway. He
parks and gets out of the car.)
(FRANK runs out of the car and up the front door walk. He finds the front door
locked.)
FRANK: Jess!
(His phone rings. He answers it.)
FRANK: Yeah.
SIMON DEAN: (from phone) Ask Jessica what a sentimental fool she is, Frank.
She's taken me to see the church where you were married.
(FRANK turns and heads for the car.)
FRANK: Simon. Listen to me.
SIMON DEAN: In fact, she's dying to see it again.
(FRANK runs to his car and gets in.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. CHURCH -- DAY]
(FRANK pulls up in front of the church. He gets out of the car and runs
inside.)
[INT. CHURCH - DAY]
(FRANK enters the church. He steps into the sanctuary and looks toward the
front. He turns and he finds someone knocked unconscious behind the last pew.
He checks for a pulse. Satisfied, he looks up and heads for the front of the
church.)
(He steps to the side aisle and pulls out his gun. He makes his way toward the
front.)
SIMON DEAN: I must admit Frank, I like your style. We would've made a great
team.
(FRANK searches for NICK and JESSICA. He reaches the front and doesn't see
them. He swings around behind him and finds NICK TRENTON standing there. He
aims his gun at him.)
SIMON DEAN (in NICK TRENTON): What are you going to do, Frank? Shoot an
innocent man? The poor bastard thinks he's having a bad dream.
(FRANK takes a step forward and holds his pose for a moment. He puts his gun
down knowing that SIMON'S right.)
FRANK: Where is she?
SIMON DEAN (in NICK TRENTON): Patience, Frank. You need me.
(They both start walking toward the front.)
SIMON DEAN (in NICK TRENTON): You need me if you want to find her. You need me
if you want to find Kevin. and you know it.
FRANK: I don't need you. I've got Alexei Korchenkov now.
(NICK'S face hardens with displeasure.)
SIMON DEAN (in NICK TRENTON): Where did you get that name?
FRANK: There's something wrong, Simon. He's the one you were gunning for when
I threw your ass off that roof. (laughs) He's the connection, isn't he? He's
the bastard that stole my son.
(NICK reaches down and grabs JESSICA from the floor. She's unconscious as he
holds the knife against her neck.)
(FRANK steps forward and knock it away. NICK drops JESSICA. FRANK pushes
forward and hits NICK. NICK hits FRANK, but FRANK doesn't fall. He steps
forward and punches NICK again. He pushes NICK up against the wall holding his
arm against his neck.)
(NICK'S face turns ashen as SIMON leaves his body.)
SIMON DEAN: This isn't over.
(NICK collapses to the ground. FRANK sits him up against the wall and steps
forward.)
(In the church, SIMON'S laughter echoes in the rafters. In the back of the
church, the young priest stands up bearing SIMON'S voice.)
SIMON DEAN (in the YOUNG PRIEST): Guess, you'll never know about Korchenkov,
Frank.
(He steps out in the center of the aisle. From FRANK'S POV, we see SIMON in the
PRIEST'S garb.)
SIMON DEAN (in the YOUNG PRIEST): Not if I get to him first.
(Angry as hell, SIMON stretches out his arms and a powerful gust of wind blows
through the back of the church opening the back door for him. He turns and
walks out of the church and into the sunlight.)
(FRANK watches him leave.)
(Behind him, NICK groans as he regains consciousness. FRANK steps up to him.)
NICK TRENTON: What happened?
FRANK: You really want to get into that, Nick? Or you want to think about
maybe taking that job offer in New York?
NICK TRENTON: New York?
(JESSICA groans as she regains consciousness. FRANK turns to look at JESSICA.
NICK follows his gaze and sees JESSICA on the floor.)
NICK TRENTON: Oh, my god.
FRANK: Yeah. That sounds like a good idea.
(NICK gets to his feet and runs out of the church. FRANK reaches into his coat
pocket for his cell phone. He dials.)
(He listens as the phone rings and kneels down next to JESSICA.)
FRANK: Hey. Hey.
JESSICA: It's okay?
(He holds her in his arms and rocks her gently.)
FRANK: It's all right. I don't think Nick's going to be bothering you anymore.
FRANK: (to phone) Marcus, we need to get to Alexei Korchenkov. Press Agent
Howard. Whatever it takes. We need to get to him, right now. Okay.
(FRANK hangs up. JESSICA starts to cry. He holds her and whispers to her.)
FRANK: It's okay. It's okay.
(He kisses her forehead. She looks up at him.)
DISSOLVE TO:
[EXT. CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) - NIGHT]
[EXT. DOWNTOWN -- NIGHT]
(OFFICERS surround a yellow tarp covering a dead body on the sidewalk. In the
back watching the scene in front of him, FRANK stands next to MARCUS.)
FRANK: You sure it's him.
MARCUS: It's him. Alexei Korchenkov. I'm sorry, man.
FRANK: Suicide?
MARCUS: They way he decided to smash through the window first? Somebody tossed
him.
(FRANK takes a couple steps toward the body. He sees a YOUNG PRIEST kneel next
to the body and lift up the tarp. FRANK stops as the YOUNG PRIEST turns and
looks directly at FRANK. It's the same YOUNG PRIEST from the church.)
(Their eyes meet.)
(Cut back to: SIMON is in the YOUNG PRIEST'S garb staring at FRANK. He
smiles.)
(Camera holds on FRANK'S glare.)
FADE OUT.
