that you're looking for?
CUT TO:
[Scene from Probably 1X01: Pilot]
[INT. MORGUE - DAY]
(SIMON DEAN is on the autopsy table, dead. FRANK is leaning over him examining
him. The CORONER, JIMMY LAMARR, talks to him about the body.)
JIMMY LAMARR (CORONER): (v.o.) The suspect's name is Simon Dean.
(While looking over the body, SIMON'S eyes suddenly open wide, his hand reaches
up and grabs FRANK by his throat. SIMON sits up on the morgue table.)
SIMON DEAN: Storm's coming, Frank.
CUT TO:
[Scene from 1X06: Nocturne]
[EXT./INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT]

[EXT. HYLAND MOTEL - STREET SIDE - DAY -- LATER]
JESSICA: lately I've had this sense of dread and I just can't shake it.

JESSICA: I don't think that I could get far enough.
CUT TO:
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT]
SIMON: Now Frank ...
(Something about the voice has FRANK turning to look to his side. He sees SIMON
DEAN standing there, blue and very dead.)
SIMON: What are we going to do about that "bad feeling" your wife's got?
(FRANK turns to look at JESSICA. He turns back to SIMON.)
(Only, SIMON'S gone.)
(FRANK looks around the room, spooked and breathing hard.)
FADE OUT.
END OF "PREVIOUSLY ON"
FADE IN.
[EXT. BASKETBALL COURT -- DAY]
(It's a beautiful day. FRANK, MARCUS and several other guys are playing a game
of basketball on the courts in the park.)
PLAYER: Let's roll.
PLAYER: Come on, come on.
PLAYER: Come on.
PLAYER: Come on, come on, baby.
(MARCUS passes the ball to FRANK and he dribbles it across the court and puts it
in the basket.)
PLAYER: What's up?
PLAYER: What you got? What you got?
MARCUS: Way to be there.
(MARCUS and FRANK high-five each other. The game continues.)
PLAYER: Right there, right there.
PLAYER: Here we go.
(MARCUS has the ball. He gets rid of it; another player gets in his face.)
PLAYER: Watch the pick!
MARUCS: What's up?
(The game continues. The other player throws the ball at the basket; it doesn't
go in.)
PLAYER: That's you, baby.
(FRANK gets the ball. He tosses it to MARCUS.)
MARUCS: Back out! Back out!
PLAYER: Top, top, top, top!
(He throws ... and nothing but net!)
MARCUS: Woo!
(He and FRANK celebrate. The game continues.)
MARCUS: Nice, baby.
(MARCUS tosses the ball toward FRANK; the other player gets it.)
MARUCS: My bad, my bad, my bad.
(FRANK blocks the PLAYER as he tries to get into position to shoot.)
PLAYER: Go around, go around.
PLAYER: Up top.
(The PLAYER shoots and FRANK blocks the shot; the ball flies off the court.)
PLAYER: Oh!
MARCUS: That's ... yeah!
PLAYER: (pointing to ball) Frank Taylor!
MARCUS: Good play, good play, baby.
(FRANK runs toward the fence to get the ball. On the other side of the fence
standing in front of a hot dog stand is JESSICA. She's with another man and
laughing, completely enjoying herself.)
(FRANK pauses to watch her.)
(JESSICA gets her hot dog from the vendor. She turns around and heads back up
the hill toward the playground. Her companion follows her and puts a hand on
her back between her shoulder blades to guide her. It's a familiar hand, one
that she's comfortable with. The two walk off together, her companion's hand on
her shoulders.)
(They walk to a nearby bench and they sit down to have their lunch.)
(FRANK is simply mesmerized by the sight.)
(MARCUS looks over at FRANK and sees his friend staring. MARCUS walks over
toward him.)
MARCUS: Hey, man ...
(FRANK turns to look at MARCUS realizing that the game came to a halt for him.
MARCUS looks beyond the fence at what's gotten FRANK'S attention.)
MARCUS: Game's over here.
(FRANK watches as JESSICA enjoys herself during lunch.)
FRANK: I haven't seen her smile like that in a long time.
(Her companion holds out his hand and JESSICA twines her fingers with his. She
smiles.)
(MARCUS takes a step back, compelling FRANK back to the game.)
MARCUS: Let's go, man.
(FRANK turns but he can't leave. He watches JESSICA.)
(JESSICA laughs, then realizes that she's being watched. She sees FRANK. Their
eyes meet. JESSICA looks away first, but she continues to hold her companion's
hand.)
FRANK: Ah, I think the game's over, man.
(FRANK throws the ball to MARCUS.)
MARCUS: Come on, man.
FRANK: No, I got to get out of here. I'll call you later.
MARCUS: All right.
(FRANK leaves the courts.)
(Camera holds on JESSICA who is fully aware that FRANK was there and saw her.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. STREET -- DAY]
(FRANK drives down the street.)
[INT. CAR (MOVING) - DAY - CONTINUOUS]
(FRANK'S cell phone rings. He glances at the caller ID. It reads: JESSICA.
He flips the phone closed and puts it in the glove compartment.)
(FRANK continues to drive his car. He turns up the volume of the radio to drown
out whatever other sounds may come from the glove compartment.)
(FRANK drives.)
(As he drives, he remembers ... )
JESSICA: (echoes) (v.o.) Frank...
FRANK: (echoes) (v.o.) I'm in Kevin's room.
DISSOLVE TO:
[INT. KEVIN'S ROOM - FLASHBACK]
(FRANK leans on the side rail of the crib. He gazes down at his son inside.
JESSICA appears next to him. She rubs a hand across his arm.)
JESSICA: Frank, what are you doing?
(FRANK looks at her, then looks back at the crib.)
FRANK: Just thinking.
JESSICA: About what?
FRANK: About what he'll be when he grows up.
JESSICA: Maybe he'll be a cop like his dad.
FRANK: Maybe he'll be an attorney like his mom.
(JESSICA laughs softly. They both turn to look into the crib.)
FRANK: I guess we'll just have to be surprised.
(JESSICA brushes the hair on FRANK'S head. He turns to look at her. She gives
him a look and she slowly tugs him willingly toward the bedroom door. They walk
out of the bedroom together.)
(End of flashback. Resume to present.)
(FRANK is driving down the highway, the radio blasting in the car.)
(FRANK adjusts the radio and goes back to driving. He averts his eyes from the
road for a moment, then when he looks back, he sees a WOMAN standing in the
middle of the road directly in front of his car.)
(FRANK swerves to avoid the WOMAN. He runs his car off of the roadway. The
WOMAN turns to watch him go off of the road.)
(FRANK'S car tumbles down the side of the hill, down the bushes and into the
trees. It stops at the bottom.)
(The camera slowly pulls away from the car amidst the cloud of dust and dirt.
It pulls away from the bottom of the hill where the car has finally settled in
the thick of the trees far off the side of the road.)

ROLL TITLE CREDITS
INTRODUCTION:
Two years ago, my son was taken from me. Since then, my job, my marriage, even
my life. But I came back, and the dead came with me.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[EXT. BOTTOM OF THE HILL -- NIGHT]
(It's dark and FRANK'S car is still on the bottom of the hill off to the side of
the road.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. STREET -- NIGHT]
(NICK, JESSICA'S friend, gets out of the car from the driver's side. He walks
around and opens JESSICA'S door. She gets out of the car)
JESSICA: Thank you.
NICK: You're welcome.
(He closes the door. Hand-in-hand, they walk over to her parked car. He looks
at her.)
NICK: So?
(She stops and turns to look at him.)
NICK: Not up for dinner tonight?
JESSICA: Oh, it's been a really long day.
(He leans in and they kiss.)
(He straightens and brushes her hair with his hand. They smile at each other.
He turns and heads back to his car.)
(JESSICA smiles. She opens her car door and gets her cell phone out to make
that call.)
(Cut to: [EXT. BOTTOM OF HILL - NIGHT] FRANK'S cell phone rings. The car door
is slightly ajar. The phone stops ringing and the answering machine picks it
up.)
(Inside the car, no one's there.)
FRANK: (answering machine) You've reached Frank Taylor investigations. Please
leave a detailed message after the beep.
(beeps)
JESSICA: (to phone) Hey, Frank, it's Jess. Um, I was hoping that we could
talk. So, if it's okay with you I'm going to wait for you at your place.
(Sitting inside her car, JESSICA hangs up.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. WOODS -- NIGHT]
(FRANK makes his way through the woods. He's injured and limping. He walks
down the hill toward the wooden house with the lights on inside.)
(He walks up the front porch and knocks on the front door.)
(FRANK pants heavily, then crumbles in a heap in front of the closed door.)
(The front door opens and a little girl in her nightgown carrying a lantern
appears in the doorway. She yells over her shoulder inside the house as she
looks down at FRANK passed out cold on the wooden porch.)
KATHY MARTIN: Mom! Dad!
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN RESIDENCE - BEDROOM -- NIGHT]
(FRANK is lying on a bed. KATHY MARTIN, still carrying the lantern, holds it up
and looks curiously at FRANK.)
KATHY MARTIN: What do you suppose happened?
(Behind her, her dad looks down at FRANK.)
TIM MARTIN: Looks like he had an accident of some kind.
KATHY MARTIN: I wonder who he is.
TIM MARTIN: (shakes his head) No idea, sweetheart.
(TIM turns to his other side. A WOMAN stands at the foot of the bed also
looking at FRANK. She looks up at her husband.)
ELISE MARTIN: How bad is he hurt?
TIM MARTIN: Bad enough. That ankle doesn't look good. He shouldn't be here,
Elise.
ELISE MARTIN: What are we supposed to do? He's hurt.
(With a final glance at his wife, TIM walks out of the bedroom. ELISE looks
down at KATHY who watches them. She turns and looks at FRANK.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. FRANK'S STREET - NIGHT]
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT]
(The front door opens and JESSICA walks into the apartment.)
JESSICA: Frank?
[VISITOR'S POV]
(Someone inside the apartment watches as JESSICA the door and sees GUS inside.
She heads toward him.)
JESSICA: Hey, Gus.
(She kneels down and holds out her hand to pet GUS.)
JESSICA: Hey.
(JESSICA stands up and walks further into the apartment. We can hear the heavy
breathing of the visitor inside the apartment watching JESSICA.)
(She walks down the hallway into the living room area. She looks down at the
coffee table and sees the pack of cigarettes, TURKISH BLACK, and empty ash tray.
She picks up the cigarettes thinking that they're FRANK'S.)
JESSICA: Oh, Gus. Don't tell me he's smoking again.
(GUS whimpers and trots toward JESSICA. He jumps on the couch that she's
standing on and settles himself there. JESSICA throws the pack of cigarettes
back onto the table. She slips her bag off of her shoulders and sits down on
the couch next to GUS.)
(She picks up the paper on the table and looks at it. It's the "RACEDAY
JOURNAL". The headline reads: "Two Fillies Fond of the Fair".)
JESSICA: (to GUS) I see he's been slipping back into all of his old habits.
(There's a clicking noise coming from JESSICA'S left.)
(JESSICA turns in that direction when she hears it.)
[VISITOR'S POV]
(The VISITOR in FRANK'S apartment breaths heavily and steps away from the glass
he was looking through when JESSICA turns in his direction.)
(GUS barks and jumps down from the couch. He heads for the hallway and toward
the noise.)
(JESSICA stands up and heads toward the door.)
JESSICA: Frank?
(GUS barks. JESSICA turns into the hallway and sees GUS standing at the corner
barking at something or someone around the bend.)
JESSICA: Gus?
(JESSICA rounds the corner leading to the partially closed door to FRANK'S
bedroom. She puts a hand on the door. GUS continues to bark. She doesn't see
anything.)
(She pushes the door open and GUS steps forward to the doorway and continues to
bark at something inside the darkened room.)
[VISITOR'S POV]
(With a whoosh, the visitor steps back further into the darkness. JESSICA and
GUS are at the edge of the doorway looking into the dark.)
JESSICA: (echoing) What's your problem, anyway?
(JESSICA reaches into the room and turns the light on. She looks around inside.
GUS steps into the bedroom between JESSICA and the visitor and continues to bark
at it.)
JESSICA: (echoing) There's no one in here.
(The visitor steps forward moving toward JESSICA. JESSICA flips the light
switch off and turns back to the hallway. She motions for GUS to follow her.)
JESSICA: Come on.
(GUS barks, then trots toward JESSICA. He leaves the room.)
JESSICA: Good boy.
(JESSICA has her hand on the door knob. She looks back into the darkened
bedroom. The visitor inside breathes heavily and inches his way toward JESSICA.
She pulls the door closed, but she doesn't shut it.)
(Through the crack in the doorway, we see JESSICA walk down the hallway toward
the living room.)
(The visitor continues to breathe heavily.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN RESIDENCE - BEDROOM -- NIGHT]
(FRANK is still out cold on the bed. KATHY MARTIN dabs FRANK'S brow with a damp
towel while her mother instructs her.)
ELISE MARTIN: That's it, real easy. Just dab at it.
(KATHY does as she's instructed.)
ELISE MARTIN: Good.
(FRANK slowly comes to and sees KATHY MARTIN standing by the side of his bed.
He smiles at the little girl.)
FRANK: Well, hello there.
KATHY MARTIN: (shyly) Hi.
(She pulls away and takes a step back from FRANK. He chuckles lightly, then
tries to get up.)
FRANK: (groans) Oh.
(He lies back down on the bed. ELISE quietly talks to him about his condition.)
ELISE MARTIN: Oh, uh, you-you might not want to move for a while. That ankle's
real swollen.
(FRANK sighs as he looks at ELISE. He recognizes her.)
FRANK: Anyone ever tell you to look both ways before you cross the road?
(KATHY giggles. FRANK turns to look at her. He smiles and winks at her. She
looks shyly back at him.)
ELISE MARTIN: I'm sorry. This is all my fault.
(FRANK looks around.)
FRANK: Where am I?
KATHY MARTIN: You're in our cabin. I'm Kathy Martin and that's my mom.
ELISE MARTIN: Elise.
(FRANK nods.)
KATHY MARTIN: I helped put you into bed. My dad said you're a big sucker.
(FRANK turns back to KATHY and laughs at her candid honesty.)
ELISE MARTIN: (chiding) Kathy.
(TIM MARTIN walks into the room and stops in front of the bed. KATHY reaches
out and lifts the covers up over FRANK. TIM looks at FRANK and turns to ELISE.)
TIM MARTIN: Well?
ELISE MARTIN: Well, that ankle really worries me. I think it is fractured.
(to FRANK) Oh, this is my husband ... Tim.
FRANK: Thanks for helping me out, Tim. Frank Taylor.
(FRANK holds out his hand to TIM. TIM looks at it, but doesn't take it.)
TIM MARTIN: People drive too damn fast on that road.
(FRANK leans back and withdraws his hand.)
TIM MARTIN: (softly) Come on, Kathy. That's enough. Let Mr. Taylor rest.
(KATHY turns to FRANK and waves. FRANK waves back as they leave.)
FRANK: Thanks again.
(They all leave. The door closes behind them.)
(FRANK settles in and sighs. He closes his eyes and tries to sleep.)
(Instead ... )
(Quick flash of JESSICA smiling as she brushes the hair away from her face.
Resume to present.)
(Another flash of JESSICA laughing at something. She's sitting on the bench
with NICK. NICK holds up his hand and JESSICA twines her fingers with his. She
looks at him and smiles. Resume to present.)
(FRANK'S eyes open.)
(He sighs. He glances down at his watch. It's 12:30a.)
(The floorboards above him creak loudly and rhythmically. Only one thing could
possibly be going on up there.)
FRANK: (mumbles) Oh, great.
(Painfully, FRANK rolls over to his side. He groans and tries to settle in to
sleep.)
(The creaking continues.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. FRANK'S STREET -- NIGHT]
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT - NIGHT]
(JESSICA sits on the couch and waits for FRANK to come home. Her phone rings
and she rushes to answer it.)
JESSICA: Hello?
(She hears heavy breathing on the phone.)
JESSICA: Hello?
(She still hears heavy breathing. She hangs up.)
(The phone on FRANK'S desk rings. JESSICA turns around to look at it. She
stands up and answers it.)
JESSICA: Hello?
(There's heavy breathing on the line.)
(JESSICA slams the phone down. She grabs a pen and writes a note. She takes
the piece of paper and heads out.)
(The chair in front of FRANK'S desk turns in her direction as if the person
sitting in it is watching her leave.)
(JESSICA walks out the front door, closing it behind her.)
(GUS stands in the middle of the room in front of the creaking chair and barks.)
(The front door opens and JESSICA walks back into the apartment.)
JESSICA: (to GUS) Well, come on then.
(GUS hurries out of the apartment door past JESSICA.)
[HALLWAY OUTSIDE FRANK'S OFFICES]
(JESSICA closes the door and leaves after GUS.)
JESSICA: Good boy. Good boy.
(Stuck on the door frame just above the lock is a yellow post-it note. It
reads:
FRANK
PLEASE CALL ME
JESS!
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN'S CABIN - KITCHEN -- THE NEXT MORNING]
(KATHY MARTIN stands in front of the stove waiting her mother's instruction.
The burner is on with a blue pot on it. ELISE MARTIN walks over to KATHY
carrying a cup full of oatmeal. KATHY takes it from her.)
ELISE MARTIN: Okay, be careful. The handle's hot.
(ELISE instructs KATHY.)
ELISE MARTIN: Now, you pour it in. All of it.
(When KATHY finishes pouring, ELISE takes the cup from her.)
ELISE MARTIN: Okay, now stir for two minutes.
(The door opens and FRANK looks out of the bedroom and into the main room. He
sees KATHY standing in front of the stove while ELISE rushes over to the fire.
With her bare hands, she lifts up the burning log and adjusts it in the fire.)
(FRANK watches her. She stands up and hurries back to KATHY who is standing
with her back to her mom and stirring the oatmeal.)
ELISE MARTIN: Okay, good, now, take it off the burner.
(FRANK withdraws a bit and slowly closes the door.)
ELISE MARTIN: Now what do you do?
KATHY MARTIN: Uh, turn of the gas.
(FRANK clears his throat to let them know that he's there and coming into the
room.)
(ELISE and KATHY, both standing in front of the stove, turn around to look at
FRANK.)
(FRANK hobbles into the room.)
FRANK: Morning.
KATHY MARTIN: Hi, Frank. (proudly) I'm learning to cook oatmeal. You want
some?
(FRANK hops into the room and slowly makes his way toward the table.)
FRANK: Uh ... only if you'll cook it for me. My mom kind of skipped the
oatmeal lesson.
(KATHY giggles at him.)
(ELISE puts the plates on the table.)
ELISE MARTIN: You know, you're smiling, but ... I'll bet it hurts.
FRANK: Uh ... you wouldn't happen to have pain reliever, would you?
ELISE MARTIN: Um, Tim doesn't believe in medicines of any kind.
(FRANK takes a breath and holds out his hand to ELISE.)
FRANK: Would you mind giving me a hand?
(ELISE looks at the hand and takes a quick step backward away from FRANK,
avoiding any physical contact.)
ELISE MARTIN: You really ... you shouldn't be up.
(FRANK notices the withdrawal.)
(ELISE moves past KATHY back to the stove where she picks up the pot full of
oatmeal.)
FRANK: (tries again) Can I use your phone to call a friend to come pick me up?
I'm also a little bit worried about my dog.
KATHY MARTIN: We don't got a phone.
ELISE MARTIN: (correcting) Uh! We don't 'have' a phone.
(KATHY nods at her mom. She turns curiously to FRANK.)
KATHY MARTIN: What kind of dog?
FRANK: (to KATHY) Gus? He's, uh ... he's kind of a mutt.
(KATHY smiles.)
FRANK: (to ELISE) Um, what about a car? Maybe I could ...
ELISE MARTIN: Yeah, we have a truck, but it-it's not working. Tim's trying to
fix it.
(FRANK nods. He definitely's getting a picture of what's going on here.)
ELISE MARTIN: You see, Tim's a carpenter. And his shop's in the shed just
across the yard.
FRANK: Oh.
(ELISE turns to KATHY.)
ELISE MARTIN: Okay, now you get a spoon and you'll dish some up for you and Mr.
Taylor.
(KATHY rushes off to follow her mom's instructions. ELISE watches her while
FRANK quietly limps over to the window. FRANK looks outside.)
ELISE MARTIN: Mr. Taylor ...
(ELISE turns around and sees that FRANK is looking out the window. FRANK looks
across the yard at the shed. In front of the shed's doors, he sees an invisible
entity walk across the yard toward the house.)
(As it gets closer, the invisible entity looks like a man walking. It looks
like TIM MARTIN walking.)
ELISE MARTIN: Frank?
(ELISE moves quickly to stand next to FRANK. She looks out the window and sees
what he sees. It's TIM, still partially see-through, and headed toward the
house.)
(ELISE whispers urgently to FRANK.)
ELISE MARTIN: (whispering) Please go back to your room. Whatever you do,
don't let Tim know what you saw or your life will be in danger.
(FRANK looks at ELISE.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. FRANK'S BUILDING - STAIRWAY -- DAY]
(JESSICA sits on the stairs waiting for MARCUS to come home. MARCUS walks up
the stairs and sees JESSICA.)
JESSICA: Hey. Sorry for bothering you so early on a Saturday.
(He reaches her and remains standing in front of her, leaning back against the
wall.)
MARCUS: Hey. You sounded pretty upset.
(MARCUS reaches out and pets GUS on the head.)
JESSICA: I'm worried about Frank. He didn't come home last night.
MARCUS: Oh. You haven't talked to him since the park, huh?
JESSICA: No. He's avoiding me.
(She stands up and they head toward FRANK'S APARTMENT.)
JESSICA: I'm sure he didn't want to admit that he was hurt. But he was,
Marcus. I could see it in his eyes. I called his apartment and his cell phone
all night. I came back here first thing this morning.
MARCUS: So, why are we here?
JESSICA: I want you to see something.
(JESSICA unlocks the door and they walk inside. The immediately notice the room
temperature. JESSICA hugs her arms around herself. GUS rushes into the
apartment.)
MARCUS: Ooh. Man, it's freezing in here. The air conditioning must be stuck.
(MARCUS checks on the temperature box.)
MARCUS: It's not even on.
(GUS starts to whine in the hallway. JESSICA and MARCUS turn to look at GUS.)
JESSICA: (shakes her head) Oh, he would never leave Gus alone overnight
without telling me or someone else.
MARCUS: All right, what is it you wanted me to see?
JESSICA: It's in the living room.
(She leads MARCUS into the living room.)
(They stop in front of the coffee table. On it is the pack of cigarettes and an
ashtray full of cigarette butts.)
MARCUS: Frank doesn't smoke.
JESSICA: There was nothing in the ashtray when I left last night.
(MARCUS takes out his cell phone and dials FRANK.)
MARCUS: Hmm.
(MARCUS steps closer to the desk to leave a message on FRANK'S phone.)
FRANK (ANSWERING MACHINE): You've reached Frank Taylor investigations. Please
leave a detailed message after the beep.
MARCUS: Frank, it's Marcus. It's Saturday morning. Look, do me a favor, man.
When you get this give me a call back, all right? Serious.
[VISITOR'S POV]
(We hear heavy breathing and see something edge past MARCUS toward JESSICA. She
stands in front of the coffee table looking down at it. The visitor looks at
her with her hands on her waist. His gaze moves up to her chest.)
(JESSICA turns around to look at MARCUS.)
JESSICA: (echoing) What was Frank working on?
MARCUS: (echoing) He re-opened the Simon Dean case.
JESSICA: (echoing) Who?
MARCUS: (echoing) Simon Dean. The guy who nearly killed Frank on the roof.
(JESSICA turns around. The visitor looks back down at JESSICA'S body-down her
chest to her exposed midriff and to her behind when she turns around. His gaze
lingers on her.)
JESSICA: (echoing) I don't understand. He's dead. Why would Frank be
investigating him?
(JESSICA sighs.)
(As JESSICA turns to look at MARCUS, the visitor's gaze moves back up her body
to her chest and then back to her face.)
JESSICA: (echoing) Well, can you look around and see if Frank left any hints
as to where he might be?
(The echoing stops and POV resumes to normal.)
MARCUS: Look, Jess uh, I really don't think I should be snooping.
(JESSICA looks past MARCUS and gasps when she sees the pictures on FRANK'S desk.
She rushes over and picks up the foremost photo frame that she had just given to
FRANK (in episode 1X03: Fidelity). It's a picture she just found of her, FRANK
and KEVIN standing between them. The glass is cracked and KEVIN'S face is
burned out.)
MARCUS: What the hell's going on here?
(JESSICA looks back at the photo.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN -- DAY]
(FRANK is lying on the bed gingerly checking his ribs with his fingertips. The
door opens a crack and KATHY sticks her head into the room.)
KATHY MARTIN: Hi, Frank.
FRANK: Hi, Kathy.
KATHY MARTIN: Do you want to play go fish with me?
(She holds up a pack of cards.)
FRANK: Sure. As long as you're not a card shark.
(She smiles and walks into the room closing the door behind her. FRANK slowly
sits up. He's still in pain.)
(Above them, the voices of her parents filter down through the floorboards.)
TIM MARTIN: (o.s.) He shouldn't be here.
ELISE MARTIN: (o.s.) Tim, he's hurt.
(KATHY climbs up onto the foot of the bed with FRANK.)
(FRANK turns his gaze upon KATHY. His eyes wide wondering whether she's dead
like her parents.)
(KATHY innocently holds out the card in her hand waiting for FRANK to take it.
Looking at KATHY, FRANK reaches out – hesitates for a beat -- and grabs the
cards.)
(She's real.)
(He turns away for a moment and breathes a sigh of relief. KATHY smiles at
FRANK.)
FRANK: So, um ... where's your room?
KATHY MARTIN: Down the hall. I'm not allowed to go in my parents' room.
FRANK: Why can't you go in your mom and dad's room?
KATHY MARTIN: 'Cause adults need their privacy.
(He laughs.)
KATHY MARTIN: But I know where they keep the key. (she leans toward FRANK and
whispers confidentially) In the kitchen cupboard.
(FRANK nods. He looks down at his cards.)
FRANK: Do you have any fives?
KATHY MARTIN: (chides him) You dealt. I go first.
FRANK: Oh.
KATHY MARTIN: So, Frank, do you have any fives?
(FRANK chuckles, then hands the cards to KATHY.)
TIM MARTIN: (o.s.) You should never have let him in, Elise.
(Both FRANK and KATHY look up at the ceiling above them as they hear TIM and
ELISE arguing about FRANK.)
ELISE MARTIN: (o.s.) It's only for a few days.
KATHY: (sighs) My dad doesn't like visitors.
TIM MARTIN: (o.s.) You should listen to me for once.
FRANK: So, do you have any friends out here?
KATHY MARTIN: No. My mom plays with me. (She thinks about this.) She lets me
win. (She looks at FRANK.) You're not letting me win, are you, Frank?
FRANK: (shakes his head) No way.
KATHY MARTIN: She doesn't play with me as much anymore.
FRANK: Why not?
KATHY MARTIN: She has to rest a lot.
FRANK: Why do you think that is?
KATHY MARTIN: Maybe because of all the stuff I have to do.
FRANK: Like what?
KATHY MARTIN: Like driving the truck.
FRANK: But you're only ten.
KATHY MARTIN: She says I have to know how in case I have to take care of myself
some day.
(FRANK nods.)
KATHY MARTIN: But don't tell, okay? My dad doesn't know she's teaching me.
(The bedroom door above them slams shut.)
(KATHY moves.)
KATHY MARTIN: Uh-oh. I'm not supposed to be bugging you. I'd better go.
(She climbs off of the bed and heads for the door. FRANK slowly leans back onto
the bed.)
(KATHY opens the door and turns around.)
KATHY MARTIN: Frank, what's a ‘godsend’?
FRANK: (confused) A godsend? Well, I guess that would be a good thing. Why?
KATHY MARTIN: That's what my mom called you.
(FRANK smiles at her. KATHY shakes her finger at FRANK.)
KATHY MARTIN: (warning) Don't peek at my cards.
(She withdraw out of the room and closes the door behind her. FRANK rests. A
creaking sound comes from the bedroom above him.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. FRANK'S STREET - DAY]
[INT. FRANK'S APARTMENT --DAY]
(JESSICA is on the phone finishing up with DANTE. MARCUS is sitting behind the
desk going through FRANK'S calendar on his laptop.)
JESSICA: (to phone) Thanks, Dante. Well, if he does show up get him to call
me right away. Okay? I will. You, too.
(She hangs up.)
MARCUS: His calendar only had one call scheduled for today. Ray Presmark with
the C.B.I.
JESSICA: Canadian Bureau of Investigation?
(JESSICA'S phone rings. She answers it.)
JESSICA: (rushed) Hello? (relieved) Oh. Hi, Nick. (she steps aside while
MARCUS continues to work at FRANK'S desk.) Oh, I can't tonight.
(MARCUS stands up and leaves the desk. JESSICA sees him. She returns to her
conversation.)
JESSICA: No, of course I want to see you. That's not it. I-I just can't make
it tonight. Okay. I'll call you tomorrow.
(JESSICA hangs up and leans against the wall. She sighs.)
[KITCHEN -- CONTINUOUS]
(In the kitchen, MARCUS opens the fridge and gets out a bottle of water. He
opens it and drinks. JESSICA walks into the kitchen.)
JESSICA: You got anything a little stronger?
(He chuckles. He turns around and opens the fridge.)
MARCUS: Must be hard.
(He closes the door, hands her the bottle of beer and leans against it as he
looks at JESSICA.)
MARCUS: Learning to live again when you felt like dying.
JESSICA: You know, I know this may sound weird, but I just need Frank to be
okay with it.
MARCUS: Then you'll be okay with it?
(JESSICA doesn't say anything. She nods.)
(MARCUS looks at JESSICA, then leans forward. He kisses her on her cheek.)
JESSICA: What was that for?
MARCUS: Well, for what it's worth, that's my okay.
(JESSICA smiles.)
MARCUS: Look, if Frank doesn't show up tonight, I'll run a trace on his credit
cards first thing in the morning. Don't worry. We'll find him. Now, uh ...
what do you say we get out of here? This place is starting to give me the
creeps.
(JESSICA laughs in agreement.)
(They both turn to exit the kitchen. As she leaves, she hears GUS' whimper.)
JESSICA: Oh. Come on, Gus. Come on.
(GUS rushes after them.)
(The front door opens and closes off screen.)
(The camera angles from the kitchen into the living room where we see a shadow
pass across the wall.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN -- NIGHT]
(FRANK is asleep in bed. His eyes open. Above him, the floor boards begin to
creak rhythmically.)
(FRANK pushes the covers aside and gets up out of bed. He grunt at the pain in
his side, but he sits up. He lights a match and looks at his watch. It's
1:35a.)
(He uses the match and lights the lantern on the bedside table. He blows out
the match.)
[MAIN ROOM]
(Cut to: FRANK pushes the door open and makes his way slowly through the main
room. Outside lightning flashes and thunder rumbles.)
(FRANK limps into the main room and makes his way toward the cupboard. The
house around him creaks and groans.)
(FRANK gets the key to the parents' bedroom.)
(He holds up the lantern and heads towards the stairs.)
(He peers into the room next to the stairs where he sees KATHY asleep in the bed
among her various stuffed animals.)
(FRANK turns and heads up the stairs.)
(FRANK reaches the second floor and puts the key into the lock. He unlocks the
door.)
[INT. PARENT'S BEDROOM]
(Inside the room just above FRANK'S room is a single rocking chair swaying back
and forth. Suddenly, the chair stops.)
(The bedroom door opens. FRANK lifts up the lantern and limps into the
bedroom.)
(Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles.)
(In the bed, FRANK sees the decomposing corpses of the MARTINS lying side by
side in bed.)
(FRANK backs away from the bed.)
(Behind him, TIM MARTIN clubs FRANK in the back. He falls to the ground
unconscious.)
(Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles. TIM looks down at FRANK on the floor.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. MARTIN CABIN - FLOOR -- NIGHT]
(FRANK is unconscious on the floor. His body is slowly dragged across the floor
and out of camera frame.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. MARTIN CABIN -- NIGHT]
(Thunder rumbles and lightning flashes. Establishing.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN - GUEST ROOM -- NIGHT]
(FRANK is tied to the bedposts. He struggles against them. When he comes to
and opens his eyes, he sees TIM MARTIN standing on the side of the bed looking
down at him.)
TIM MARTIN: (shakes his head) Some people should mind their own business.
(FRANK exhales.)
FRANK: How long has it been, Tim? How long have you and Elise been dead?
TIM MARTIN: Doesn't matter. We're still here.
FRANK: It does matter because it's your daughter who is running out of time.
She's almost out of food, Tim. And what happens when it gets cold? When the
snow comes? She can't chop firewood. Who's going to take care of her then?
TIM MARTIN: We're taking care of her.
(TIM leans down close to FRANK.)
TIM MARTIN: (low voice) If you tell my daughter about this, I'll kill you.
(FRANK watches as TIM withdraws. Suddenly, TIM is overcome with weakness and
his form falters. He becomes wavey and transparent. He braces himself and his
form solidifies, then weakens again.)
(TIM looks at FRANK and in his solid form, turns and leaves the room. He opens
the door as weakness overcomes him again. He falters, becomes wavey and
transparent. He walks out of the door in his transparent form and vanishes.)
(The door closes behind him.)
(FRANK breathes heavily. He looks at his tied hands, then back at the room.
He's thinking.)
FRANK: Elise.
(There's no answer. FRANK looks into the shadowed portion of the room.)
FRANK: Elise. I know you can hear me.)
(ELISE steps forward.)
ELISE MARTIN: I'm sorry Frank.
(Lightning flashes and we see ELISE walk toward the bed.)
ELISE MARTIN: I never meant to do this to you.
FRANK: No. This is exactly what you wanted. That's why you were out on that
road. You wanted me ... or someone just like me to come and help Kathy. Admit
it.
ELISE MARTIN: I have to go. If Kathy saw me talking to you, she'll ...
FRANK: Just untie me. Untie me.
ELISE MARTIN: I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Frank.
(ELISE starts to back away from the bed and back to the dark shadowed corner of
the room.)
FRANK: (desperate) Untie me. Untie me ... Elise.
ELISE MARTIN: I'm sorry. I'm sorry ...
(Lightning flashes. ELISE backs away from the bed.)
(Lightning flashes. ELISE is gone.)
(FRANK exhales and struggles against the ties around his wrists.)
CUT TO:
[INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT -- DAY]
(JESSICA walks into MARCUS' office. He's behind his desk on the phone.)
MARCUS: (to phone) Okay. Thank you.
(He hangs up.)
JESSICA: Any word?
MARCUS: I just had his credit card company run his last purchase. Two nights
ago at 8:30 p.m., he bought gas at a little filling station in the mountains
along the Angeles Crest Highway.
JESSICA: What do you say, you and I take a little ride.
(She turns and walks out of the office. MARCUS grabs his jacket and follows
her.
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN -- DAY]
(TIM MARTIN makes his way down stairs. In the kitchen ELISE instructs KATHY.)
KATHY MARTIN: (o.s.) It's heavy.
ELISE MARTIN: (o.s.) And hot, yeah, be careful. Use two hands, sweetie.
(He walks over to them. They're both standing in front of the fire. KATHY has
the poker in her hands. She looks up and smiles at her dad.)
(TIM kneels down in front of KATHY.)
KATHY MARTIN: Good morning, daddy.
TIM MARTIN: Good morning, pumpkin.
ELISE MARTIN: (to KATHY) Go wash up. You're a mess.
(KATHY bounces out of the room past her dad. TIM watches her leave. He stands
and turns to ELISE.)
TIM MARTIN: How's he doing?
ELISE MARTIN: How would you be doing if you were him right now?
TIM MARTIN: Elise, I want you and Kathy to stay out of there. Just leave him
be.
ELISE MARTIN: Leave him be? For how long?
(TIM doesn't say anything, but looks pointedly at her.)
ELISE MARTIN: Oh, Tim. The man is hurt. He needs a doctor. At the very
least, he needs food and water.
TIM MARTIN: Does he?
ELISE MARTIN: (eyes widen) Tim. No.
(TIM leans forward toward ELISE.)
TIM MARTIN: Elise, just please, for once, do as I say.
(ELISE'S mouth opens in shock. She steps away from TIM toward the table. TIM
leans in toward ELISE trying to convince her.)
TIM MARTIN: He could take Kathy. Is that what you want?
ELISE MARTIN: (pleading) Tim, we don't have a choice anymore. She's almost
out of food. We're miles from anywhere. She can't do this alone.
TIM MARTIN: How many times do I have to tell you, we are still a family. There
is no reason for her to leave. We'll be here to help.
(TIM turns and leaves the cabin, leaving ELISE alone with her thoughts and two
lives in the balance.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. HIGHWAY -- DAY]
(Inside the car, ELISE is driving. The phone rings and MARCUS answers it.)
MARCUS: Marcus Bradshaw. What do you got?
JESSICA: Who is it?
MARCUS: (to JESSICA) Highway patrol. (to phone) Give me a mile marker.
(JESSICA turns to look at MARCUS.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN - GUEST BEDROOM -- DAY]
(FRANK is still tied to the bed. The door opens and ELISE slips inside.)
ELISE MARTIN: You have to get out of here. Now.
(ELISE moves toward the bed.)
FRANK: Elise, I have to take Kathy with me.
(She stops.)
FRANK: That is why you brought me here, isn't it? Now, if I'm going to help
you, you have to trust me. How long has it been?
ELISE MARTIN: It happened seven weeks ago.
FRANK: Kathy can still see you. Why?
ELISE MARTIN: We think it's because she's so innocent. Children have a natural
trust, an openness.
(FRANK sighs. He leans back on the bed.)
FRANK: How did it happen?
ELISE MARTIN: We have a wood stove in our bedroom and the wood must have been
damp 'cause it smoked.
FRANK: You asphyxiated in your sleep?
(She looks at FRANK and takes the seat next to the bed.)
ELISE MARTIN: Dying was so easy. It was so effortless. We just got up from
our nap as usual. But, then we realized we stepped out of our bodies.
(Tears begin forming in her eyes.)
ELISE MARTIN: But you already know what that's like, don't you?
(beat)
ELISE MARTIN: To step out?
FRANK: How did you know?
ELISE MARTIN: Once the light from the other side touches someone, it never
leaves them. To me, you're like a bright flame in the dark. You know, that's
how I saw you coming down the road. You couldn't hide from the dead if you
tried.
(FRANK sighs.)
FRANK: Elise ... I've noticed that when Time materializes, the room gets cold
like he's drawing on the heat or the energy from the room.
ELISE MARTIN: (nods) To make Kathy see us in our physical form, we have to
absorb a huge amount of energy. But we can only sustain it for so long and then
we have to rest.
(FRANK doesn't say anything. ELISE continues.)
ELISE MARTIN: You know, Tim's just mad at himself for leaving Kathy alone and
helpless. He can't bear the thought of losing her. For not being there for her
as she grows up. Can you understand that?
FRANK: Yes. I can. But you know that Tim is wrong, don't you, Elise? Kathy
needs to grow up in the world of the living. To touch, to be touched, to go to
school with other children.
ELISE MARTIN: (sobbing) And we can't give her that anymore.
FRANK: But you can, Elise, by helping me help her.
(ELISE realizes that FRANK'S right. She stands up and starts to untie him.)
ELISE MARTIN: If you can get to the shed, you can get to the truck.
(Through the window outside, TIM'S shadow appears just beyond the window.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN
[INT. MARTIN CABIN - MAIN ROOM -- DAY]
(ELISE walks down the stairs. FRANK is looking out the window at the shed
across the yard.)
ELISE MARTIN: Frank ...
(FRANK turns around to look at ELISE.)
ELISE MARTIN: I can't do it. I can't leave Kathy. She would think that we'd
abandoned her. She would never understand.
FRANK: It doesn't have to be that way, Elise. You could explain it. You could
show her.
ELISE MARTIN: But then she-she would know. She would quit seeing me.
FRANK: At least she wouldn't wonder what happened to you. She'd know. She'd
be able to go on. If you ask me, you've been given this ... rare chance. You
get to tell her that you love her and say good-bye.
(FRANK glances at the window behind him.)
FRANK: We'll never make it if we have to walk. We need that truck.
ELISE MARTIN: Yeah, but Tim's out there. You can't risk it.
FRANK: I have to. Show her, Elise. It's the only way.
(The door opens and FRANK walks outside.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. BOTTOM OF THE HILL -- DAY]
(FRANK'S car is at the bottom of the hill. MARCUS leads JESSICA down the hill
toward FRANK'S car.)
MARCUS: All right, come on. Watch your step.
JESSICA: Oh, my god.
MARCUS: (to the officer) What have you got?
OFFICER: No sign of a driver.
(JESSICA looks inside the car.)
JESSICA: He must be hurt -- there's blood on the steering wheel. Where could
he have gone? There's no place around here for miles.
MARCUS: Well, looks like he tried to walk out.
OFFICER: Only a few places he could've gone in these parts.
(JESSICA and MARCUS walk off screen.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN -- DAY]
(ELISE is in the main room. She has KATHY'S suitcase out on the table. KATHY
walks into the room.)
KATHY MARTIN: What's the matter, mom? You look like you've been crying.
ELISE MARTIN: Oh, no. No.
(ELISE wipes her face.)
ELISE MARTIN: I have some news.
KATHY MARTIN: What?
ELISE MARTIN: I want you to take this and I want you to pack some clothes.
Okay? And then I'm going to tell you
(KATHY looks at the suitcase.)
KATHY MARTIN: Pack some clothes, why?
ELISE MARTIN: (firmly) Kathy ... Just go now.
(Before she cries in front of KATHY, ELISE grabs the cup and plate off of the
table. She turns and puts it on the counter, her back to KATHY.)
KATHY MARTIN: Where are we going? Mom, why are you sad?
ELISE MARTIN: Oh, baby, I'm not. I'm not sad, see?
(ELISE wipes her face and kneels down in front of KATHY.)
ELISE MARTIN: These are happy tears.
KATHY MARTIN: They don't look very happy.
ELISE MARTIN: Well, they are. Because Frank is going to take you to the city
with him. Huh? Well, you've always wanted to see the big city, haven't you?
KATHY MARTIN: Are you and daddy coming?
ELISE MARTIN: Well, n-not right away, sweetheart. Um, you and Frank are going
to go on ahead and then Daddy and I are going to come as soon as we can.
KATHY MARTIN: I'm not going without you.
ELISE MARTIN: Kathy, please! Please, just do as mommy says, okay? We have to
hurry now.
KATHY MARTIN: No! I'm not going without you. Daddy said I wasn't supposed to
go anywhere with Frank. I'm not leaving you or him!
(Upset, KATHY runs out of the room into her bedroom. She slams the door behind
her.)
ELISE MARTIN: Kathy, get...!
CUT TO:
[EXT. MARTIN RESIDENCE - FRONT YARD - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]
(FRANK limps across the yard toward the shed. He reaches the shed door and
looks inside.)
(He turns toward the truck. He opens the door and climbs inside. He closes the
door and turns the key. The starter grinds and doesn't catch. He tries a few
more times before giving up.)
(He gets out of the truck and pops the hood.)
(He closes the hood and sees TIM MARTIN standing there angrily staring at FRANK.
In his hands, he holds an ax.)
(TIM heads for FRANK and lifts the ax. FRANK backs away from him toward the
shed.)
(TIM swings; FRANK ducks. TIM hits the door frame of the shed.)
(FRANK steps back into the shed. TIM rushes forward swinging the ax. FRANK
dives out of his way. TIM slams the ax downward toward FRANK and hits the work
table top.)
(FRANK stands up clutching his middle in pain.)
(TIM starts to wobble, obviously loosing energy.)
TIM MARTIN: You will never take my daughter away from me. Never!
FRANK: I am taking her, Tim. She deserves to have a life.
(Angrier than ever and in an attempt to preserve his family, TIM grabs ahold of
the ax and steps around the table. He raises the ax to strike FRANK down.)
TIM: No...!
(He wavers, becomes transparent, his flesh disappearing into bone and muscle,
then into nothing.)
(Exhausted, TIM disappears. His ax falls flat to the ground.)
(FRANK breathes heavily, cautiously looking around him, puzzled by what
happened.)
(Then he feels it. Something invisible hits him in the jaw. FRANK falls down
to his knees on the floor.)
FRANK: ow.
(FRANK looks up and he sees TIM once again lifting up the ax, his form wavering
from muscle and bone into flesh. He raises the ax high above his head.)
(KATHY screams.)
(TIM pauses and looks toward the house. He lowers the ax.)
TIM MARTIN: Kathy!
(Getting no answer, TIM drops the ax and heads for the house.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABINE - PARENTS' BEDROOM - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]
(The two corpses lie side by side in bed. At the foot of the bed, KATHY stares
at the two bodies. She turns around, tears stream down her face.)
KATHY MARTIN: (crying) Mom?
ELISE MARTIN: Yes, baby?
KATHY MARTIN: What does this mean?
(Footsteps are heard climbing the stairs just as TIM walks into the bedroom. He
takes the scene in and looks at KATHY crying.)
(FRANK reaches the bedroom doorway.)
(TIM turns to ELISE.)
TIM MARTIN: Why?
ELISE MARTIN: Because it was the only way. We have to let her live her life.
(KATHY cries softly. She rushes toward her mom. ELISE kneels down in front of
her, they don't touch.)
KATHY MARTIN: Mommy ...
(TIM kneels down next to her. The moment of truth is here.)
ELISE MARTIN: Hey. We'll always love you, baby.
(ELISE reaches out a hand toward KATHY'S cheek. Her hand wavers and starts to
vanish before her eyes.)
KATHY MARTIN: No!
TIM MARTIN: We'll always love you, pumpkin.
(In front of her, both her parents waver out of focus and start to vanish. Then
in the dust the floats through the sunbeams, they're gone.)
(KATHY cries.)
(FRANK falls to his knees and opens his arms to her. KATHY rushes toward him
and throws her arms around FRANK'S neck. He wraps his arms tightly around her
as she cries.)
FRANK: (softly) It's going to be okay, Kathy. I promise.
(He kisses the side of her head.)
JESSICA: (o.s.) Hello. Is anyone home?
FRANK: Come on.
(FRANK stands up and carries KATHY downstairs.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MARTIN CABIN - MAIN ROOM - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]
(FRANK walks down the stairs, KATHY still in his arms.)
(He reaches the bottom and passes MARCUS. He stops in front of JESSICA.)
JESSICA: Are you okay?
FRANK: Yeah-ah ... yeah, I am.
(FRANK turns and heads out the front door. JESSICA follows close behind him.
CUT TO:
[PARENT'S BEDROOM]
(Through the window of the second floor bedroom, we see FRANK, KATHY and JESSICA
walk toward the OFFICER and the car.)
(The camera slowly pulls back from the window and we're made aware of a rhythmic
creaking coming from the room. The camera moves backward and we see the rocking
chair in the middle of the room facing the window move slowly, steadily back and
forth.)
FADE OUT.
