SUMMARY:
==========================
A man enters a virtual reality game where he was told he could easily complete and get out of the game any time he wanted. This was a lie. He was lied to by the government and is looking for a way out to get home to his wife. In Harsh Realm he has made quite a few enemies for himself.
==========================
EXT. FARM HOUSE - DAY
A BOUNTY HUNTER, dressed in a white suit and a straw hat, rumpled, sweating. He approaches, walking through the field.
He knocks on the door. MRS. CABOT answers.
BH: Afternoon, ma'am, and a fine afternoon it is, yes siree. Is the man in the house about?
MRS. CABOT: What do you want from us?
Her SON sees the man at the door.
BH: Only your patience, ma'am, only the virtue of the forbearing.
Her small children gather around her.
BH: Fine looking children, ma'am, yes sirree, well worth your hopes and dreams on the new frontier far away from this Harsh Realm. Transportation included, ma'am.
He shows her a paper that looks like a brochure.
MRS. CABOT: Leave us alone.
She tries to shut the door but he grabs it and forces it open.
BH: Maybe this is something I should take up with your husband.
He walks into the house.
SON: Dad! Dad!
He runs. JOHN CABOT is sticking a knife into what looks like a gopher.
(song plays)
SON: Dad! Dad!
He runs across the field to where his father is, closely followed by BOUNTY
HUNTER #2
Cabot gets up, takes a couple steps toward his son.
SON: Dad! Dad! No, go back! Go!
The kid turns to run at BH#2. BH#2 shoves the kid, who falls to the ground.
Cabot runs. Gets his gun from in the combine/tractor. Loads it. Faces BH2.
CABOT: Not another step! Right there!
BH2 stops. Spits.
CABOT: So what's the bounty on my head?
BH2: Huh?
He turns up his hearing aid.
CABOT: How much? How much you getting for me?
BH2: I'm looking for a soldier you served with. A friend of yours.
CABOT: You can go to hell.
BH2 zaps him with a small device he had up his sleeve. Cabot turns blue, like when people die, but he looks as though he's been put on pause.
BH2: We'll talk later.
TITLE SEQUENCE:
HOBBES (VO): A world exists exactly like ours. You live in this world, your family and friends. And though you may not know it, I was sent to save you.
It's just a game.
ACT I
Legend: Pittsburgh Encampment, Harsh Realm
HOBBES (VO): They call it the new frontier, but it's nothing less than a battleground. A place where free men live on the edge of a razor in this place called Harsh Realm. Like me, these people are on the run. And though I know none of this is real, that this is a virtual world I'm in, there's fear in the air here. I can taste it, I feel it in my lungs as pure as anything I've ever felt. I'm living day to day, trying to make sense of all this, trying to stay strong and trying my best just to stay alive. I'm in the company of a solider, a man sent here on a mission like mine who saved my life for which I'm in his debt, as I am to a woman who doesn't speak but who healed me with a miracle when I might have died.
As he speaks, we see the encampment. PINOCCHIO, Hobbes and FLORENCE walking through it. It's crowded. Dirty. People living in tents.
We see laundry hanging on a line. An old man sponging the forehead of an old woman. Men gambling. A woman cooking an animal on a stick over an open fire.
Pinocchio trades a woman something for food.
DEXTER barks.
Pinocchio drops a bit of the food (beef jerky?) for Dexter.
PINOCCHIO: (to Florence) Keep a real close eye on him. (to Hobbes) You're not careful, somebody's gonna eat that dog.
He walks away.
Hobbes bends to pick up Dexter. He also picks up a photocopied flyer. It's generic; says "Rewards Given" at the top. There's a drawing of Santiago and Santiago City. It says: "Rewards given for information leading to the capture of rebels. Protection and asylum granted inside Santiago City by General Omar
Santiago."
HOBBES: (VO): We're on the run from Omar Santiago, a renegade solider who hijacked the computer program that runs this world. It was Santiago the military sent me here to kill. The fear of him is real and great, though I have yet to understand why if all this is just imaginary.
Pinocchio, wandering through the encampment, approaching different people.
PINOCCHIO: I'd like to buy some gas...you guys know anybody selling gas?
Hobbes still walking through the encampment, looking at everything. He sees a woman with a baby.
HOBBES (VO) They say this is a recreation of the real world, right down to every man woman and child with a double here who can live or die in the virtual reality of harsh realm. But only those of us plugged into the program know this, at any time have any consciousness of the truth, that it's only a game. I pray that's all it is. Sophie, I watched you die here, never to exist again in Harsh
Realm. I'm doing everything in my power to find my way out, to find my way home.
He sits down. Florence sits next to him. Hobbes looks at a picture of Sophie in his wallet.
INT. - ARMY OFFICE - DAY
Legend: CORPS HEADQUARTERS, FORT DIX, NEW JERSEY
SOPHIE: You said you'd have an answer. I need answers from somebody.
SOLDIER: I'm afraid that I don't have any ma'am. Look...
LIEUTENANT COLONEL interrupts from his doorway.
LT. COL.: Corporal. It's okay. Please.
He ushers Sophie into his office.
INT. - LT. COL'S OFFICE - DAY
LT. COL.: Won't you please have a seat, Ms. Green?
He sits. She does not.
SOPHIE: Sir, if you'll pardon me I've been trying for a week to get somebody to tell me what's happened to my fiance.
LT. COL.: I understand
SOPHIE: No I don't think you do.
LT. COL.: You got no answers because we have none yet to give. Tom Hobbes' whereabouts were classified.
SOPHIE: He left the house with two of your men, was told to pack a bag on the orders of his CO. I'm not a troublemaker.
LT. COL.: What I'm trying to say Ms. Green is that I have an answer. It came across my desk this morning.
He picks up a file folder and reads.
LT. COL.: On April 1st Lt. Hobbes was given a mission concerning a sensitive military objective. In prosecution of his orders, it has been learned that Lt.
Hobbes -
She shakes her head, not wanting to believe it.
SOPHIE: No...
Lt. Col. gets to his feet.
LT. COL.: Lt. Hobbes was killed in action. Further information is classified.
We'll be transporting the body home immediately. We'd like to offer our condolences.
Sophie runs out of the office. Through the door that closes behind her, we see
INGA FOSSA, watching her.
EXT. PITTSBURGH ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT
MAY: Hey. I hear you're looking for gas.
PINOCCHIO: Yeah. But if you're looking for protection I ain't' no one's daddy
She shows him a tattoo on her chest.
MAY: Got my protection. You want to buy gas or you don't.
Pinocchio nods, barely.
MAY: How you paying?
PINOCCHIO: Ammo. Six rounds.
He shows her, then pulls it back.
PINOCCHIO: Pay at the pump.
She turns away. Pinocchio follows her. Florence watches them go.
EXT. PENNSYLVANIA FRONTIER - NIGHT
Pinocchio's car pulls up to a rusted out tanker truck. Pinocchio gets a gas can
from the trunk. Turns on the faucet. No gas comes out.
PINOCCHIO: What the hell is this?
A gu? cocks. BH1 laughs.
Pinocchio kicks him as he fires, knocking the gun up so the bullets go into the air. May kicks Pinocchio. He knocks her down. She clings to his legs, but he manages to get away from her.
Sees BH2.
PINOCCHIO: You.
He reaches for his gun.
PINOCCHIO: As long as you're here, check the oil and tires.
He draws his gun. BH2 is faster. Puts Pinocchio "on pause" like he did Cabot.
BH2: Yes, sir, Mr. Pinocchio.
EXT. FARMHOUSE - DAY
Republican Guard jeeps cross the field to the farmhouse. Storm the house with guns.
Santiago's soldiers corner the son in the backyard.
MRS. CABOT: No, please don't take my children.
The soldiers grab her, her daughter, and the little boy, and drag them out of the house.
MRS. CABOT: Let go of him...Please don't take my baby...no...
SANTIAGO walks through.
WATERS: General Santiago?
SANTIAGO: What does the woman say, Major?
WATERS: She says she doesn't know Mike Pinocchio. She says her husband was taken from here by a bounty hunter.
SANTIAGO: Well then. We should show some mercy.
As the soldiers drive away, the farmhouse burns.
ACT II
EXT. CEMETERY - DAY
Legend: Finn's Point National Cemetery, Salem, New Jersey
LT. COL.: To give your life in defense of principle is to sanctify life. To consecrate the soul, to honor those lives who gave lives. As he protected and defended the many, Thomas enriched the lives of everyone he loved and who knew him, none more than that of Sophie, his beloved bride to be. Sophie has asked me to read this today to honor Tom and their love which carries on.
A man is playing "Taps." Soldiers are folding the flag. Soldiers begin to fire a 21-gun salute into the air.
LT. COL.: You live in me for as long as I live. You live a life that does not die. From me you speak. My love is everlasting. Please accept our country's flag as a token of our appreciation for Thomas's faithful service to his country. May god be with your family in your time of grieving.
The crowd disperses, leaving Sophie, sitting alone, the flag on her lap. She sets it aside to approach the coffin, which she touches.
INGA FOSSA: I'm sorry to bother you here. I know this is a difficult time for you. I met Tom briefly, just before he disappeared.
SOPHIE: Who are you?
INGA FOSSA: I can't tell you too much. Just that you've been mislead.
SOPHIE: About what?
INGA FOSSA: About Tom's death.
Sophie takes of her veiled hat.
SOPHIE: Why are you doing this?
INGA FOSSA: I'm taking a chance by coming to you. I couldn't come to you any sooner. You have to find out the facts on your own.
SOPHIE: You're telling me Tom's not dead?
INGA FOSSA: I'm only telling you you've accepted a lie as the truth.
She gives her a set of dog tags. They read:
PINOCCHIO
MIKE APOS-CA
549-24-3889
SOPHIE: What is this? I don't know anyone named Mike Pinocchio.
INGA FOSSA: Somebody does.
She walks away.
EXT. PENNSYLVANIA FRONTIER - DAY
Legend: Pennsylvania Frontier, Harsh Realm.
Hobbes and Florence find Pinocchio's car.
HOBBES: What the hell happened here?
He sees something.
HOBBES: Over here.
It's tracks in the dirt. They follow them, off into the woods.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY
BH2 throws Pinocchio into the basement.
BH2: Get in there.
BH2 kicks Pinocchio down the stairs. BH1 kicks Pinocchio in the stomach.
PINOCCHIO: Okay Hercules, I get the drill.
BH1 goes to kick him again and Pinocchio grabs him.
BH2 takes out his zapper. Threatening to use it.
PINOCCHIO: Hey, hey, that thing hurts. Hey.
BH2: What? What's he say?
He turns up his hearing aid.
BH1: GI says he's gonna pay for that.
BH2 walks out. BH1 goes with him.
CABOT: Pinocchio? That you?
PINOCCHIO: Who's that?
CABOT: Cabot? John Cabot.
He's in the corner. Badly beaten. Pinocchio crawls over there.
PINOCCHIO: Johnny. What -? What happened to you?
CABOT: Same as you. Bounty hunters gonna turn us over to Santiago. He's been looking for you. They made m?, Mike. I wouldn't talk but when they threatened my family...
PINOCCHIO: They got lucky, is all.
(beat)
I'm gonna get us out of here.
He has a wire. Starts bending it back and forth.
EXT. BH's HOUSE - DAY
Hobbes and Florence check out the house from afar. See BH1 patrolling the fence.
HOBBES: One man. They got nothing.
Florence starts to go down to the house. Hobbes grabs her.
HOBBES: I want to go in as bad as you. We don't know for sure if he's in there.
We'll go at nightfall.
She's annoyed. Moves away from him. So does Dexter.
(song plays)
BH1 patrols the fence. Goes over to pee in the bushes. Dexter digs under the
fence. Slides past as BH1 lights a cigarette.
INT. BH'S HOUSE - DAY
BH2 is asleep in a rocking chair. Dexter moves past him. He turns up his
hearing aid.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY
Pinocchio picking the lock. Under the door he sees the dog's paws, hears him whining.
PINOCCHIO: How the hell'd you get in here? You're gonna blow it, you stupid mutt.
He kicks at the door - not at the dog.
PINOCCHIO: Get outta here.
The dog disappears from the crack below the door, having been picked up.
INT. BH'S HOUSE - DAY
BH2 picks up the dog. Holds him up to May.
BH2: Looks like we got rats.
EXT. OUTSIDE BH'S HOUSE - DAY
Hobbes and Florence waiting. Hear the dog's whining.
HOBBES: Dexter.
They run. Florence covers Hobbes with the gun, hanging back. Hobbes scales the fence.
INT. BH'S HOUSE - DAY
Hobbes bursts in, gun blazing.
May is holding the dog. BH1 with a gun.
BH1 imitates whining dog.
BH2 takes Hobbes's gun.
BH2: Thank you very much.
INT.: BASEMENT - DAY
PINOCCHIO: We're out of here Johnny.
The door opens. There stand the Bounty Hunters and Hobbes.
BH1: The rest of your party arrived.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY (Later)
May ties them up.
PINOCCHIO: What the hell were you doing?
HOBBES: Trying to get you out.
PINOCCHIO: Who asked you to do that?
HOBBES: I owed you
PINOCCHIO: You are one stupid --
BH2 pushes May.
BH2 (to May): Who taught you to tie a knot?
MAY: You did.
BH2: Huh? What?
He takes over the knot tying. She leaves. He spits.
HOBBES: What does he want with you?
PINOCCHIO: Nothing but the price on my head.
HOBBES: From who?
PINOCCHIO: Who do you think?
HOBBES: Santiago.
Pinocchio gives him an answering look.
HOBBES: How long you gonna run from this man? You call me stupid, at least I'm willing to finish my mission. At least I'm willing to fight.
BH2, on the stairs, hears this.
BH2: And what mission is that?
He starts down the stairs.
BH2: What's your name boy?
EXT. PITTSBURGH ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT
Legend: Pittsburgh Encampment, Harsh Realm
Fire. Santiago's soldiers burning everything. Waters standing on the back of a truck, overseeing. BH2 emerges from the flames. Waters gets down to talk to him.
BH2: You're looking for Mike Pinocchio.
WATERS: A bounty to the man who brings General Santiago his head.
BH2: And for the head of Tom Hobbes?
ACT III
EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY
Legend: Pemberton, New Jersey
Sophie driving a red truck, a GMC. She gets out. Knocks on the door of a suburban house.
Mrs. Cabot opens the door.
MRS. CABOT: Hi. Can I help you?
SOPHIE: I hope so. My name is Sophie Green. My fiance's Tom Hobbes. He was an officer over at Fort Dix.
MRS. CABOT: What happened to him?
SOPHIE: He was killed in action. That's what I was told.
MRS. CABOT: I'm sorry. Why come to me?
Sophie shows her the dog tags.
SOPHIE: I was given these dog tags they belong to a soldier named Mike Pinocchio. I've been trying to find out any information but the military won't help me and he has no immediate family. Your husband served with him.
MRS. CABOT: My husband was killed in action. That's what I was told.
CLOSE ON PHOTO - Men in uniform. Smiling. The sun's shining. Cabot and
Pinocchio are both there.
INT. CABOT LIVING ROOM - DAY
Sophie sits on the couch, looking at a?photo album. Mrs. Cabot stands.
MRS. CABOT: That's John with Mike Pinocchio in Kuwait, during the Gulf War.
Those men have all disappeared.
SOPHIE: All of them?
MRS. CABOT: Killed in action on classified assignments involving sensitive military objectives. I pounded on doors till I was blue in the face. I wrote my senator, the VA, the pentagon, I got no clear answers, none.
SOPHIE: But this is...it's beyond coincidence, it's beyond belief.
MRS. CABOT: That's what I kept telling them. Doesn't do any good.
SOPHIE: Somebody knows about this, somebody gave me these dog tags because they want me to find out.
MRS. CABOT: I hope you're right. After all this time, I tell myself and my family maybe it's best just believing they might all be dead.
Her son enters.
SON: Mom?
SOPHIE: I hope I never have to tell my family the same thing.
She leaves.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY
HOBBES (VO) These were fighting men, U.S. soldiers trained to be the best, but they are broken now, living a fugitive existence. Who knows of this? Do their loved ones have any ideas of this world? Do you my dearest Sophie?
PINOCCHIO: Shut up, Hobbes
HOBBES: I didn't say anything
PINOCCHIO: Yeah well I feel you thinking.
The door opens. May comes in with Dexter.
MAY: Your dog won't eat.
PINOCCHIO: Put a leash on me honey, I'll eat anything you want.
HOBBES: Shut up.
PINOCCHIO: Did I offend your sense of Honor, Hobbes?
HOBBES: You don't have to talk to her like that.
PINOCCHIO: She's thug's whore. She'll sell your dog for hamburger if she can ever fatten it up.
Dexter goes to Hobbes, licks his face.
MAY: I would never hurt an animal.
PINOCCHIO: She's got no problem putting our heads on the chopper.
Dexter sits close to Hobbes.
MAY: Come here, little dog.
HOBBES: Please. Please, we could use some water.
MAY: My daddy told me not to.
HOBBES: These men are hurt.
PINOCCHIO: You're wasting your time, Hobbes.
HOBBES: She'll bring us some water.
PINOCCHIO: For what, a kind word? This is Harsh Realm. Kindness is when your buddy robs you, shoots you, doesn't rape your woman.
May picks up Dexter to leave.
HOBBES: Hey...
She pauses.
HOBBES: Let us go.
MAY: If I let you go, who'll pay us?
PINOCCHIO: There's a nice logic there, Hobbes.
HOBBES: What do you think will happen if you turn us over to Santiago?
MAY: What'll happen to me if I let you go?
She turns to leave now.
PINOCCHIO: Better eat that dog before it gets too skinny.
The door slams behind her.
HOBBES: What is wrong with you?
PINOCCHIO: It doesn't matter, Hobbes. Can you get that through your head? She's
vc, a virtual character. These people got no reason to help you, no moral compunction. They programmed the game, they forgot one thing: you die here, you disappear. These people know no Christian virtues. They know no God. Judgement day in Harsh Realm is when somebody points a gun at you. Ask Johnny, he'll tell you.
Cabot kind of nods.
PINOCCHIO: Get erased here, it's over. These people got no notion of an afterlife, it's not even a concept.
HOBBES: What about the real world? Don't they believe in that?
PINOCCHIO: What good would it do them? The only world they know is Santiago's.
INT. BH'S HOUSE - DAY
May is listening to them, outside the door.
EXT. SANTIAGO CITY - NIGHT
Legend: Santiago City, Harsh Realm
INT. COUNCIL ROOM - NIGHT
Santiago overseeing a meeting of his soldiers. They're looking at maps and aerial photos.
SANTIAGO: And when we take these urban centers, our policy is this, repatriate only the healthy and the strong. Prisoners of war drain our resources and are therefore subject to extermination.
Waters enters with BH2.
WATERS: General Santiago, this is the man who wanted to see you.
SANTIAGO: This man is a bounty hunter. Pay him the going rate and be done.
BH2: I got men you're looking for.
A soldier draws his gun on BH2.
WATERS: At ease Sergeant
BH2: Mike Pinocchio and two others.
SANTIAGO: I?should have you thrown out if only for the reeking stench.
BH2: Tom Hobbes. An assassin.
SANTIAGO: Obviously an ineffectual one.
BH2: I give you Pinocchio as a gift.
Santiago looks up.
BH2: For Hobbes I ask a price.
Santiago approaches him.
BH2: That I should let these men go?
SANTIAGO: You only ply your dirty trade because I pay you. You only survive in Harsh Realm because I let you.
BH2: I want out of Harsh Realm.
SANTIAGO: There is no way out.
BH2: Don't give me that vc rap. My body's on a freaking slab up there in the real world. You got a way out. I know it. A portal.
SANTIAGO: If I do, sir, you might make every effort to win my favor to repair this patronage. For then I have the power to destroy you not only in one world but in two. Bring me this Hobbes and I'll consider your request.
He walks away.
INT. BASEMENT - NIGHT
CABOT: You know why he runs?
Hobbes looks at Pinocchio, who is asleep.
HOBBES: He wants to get out, back home, back to the real world.
CABOT: Last place he's going
HOBBES: What are you talking about?
CABOT: Pinocchio, what he knows, about Santiago. His final solution.
Hobbes looks confused.
CABOT: Better stay alive in Harsh Realm, lieutenant, this may very well be all that's left.
The door opens. May enters, looking over her shoulder nervously.
HOBBES: I knew you'd come.
MAY: You're strange.
HOBBES: Why.
MAY: The way you talk to me, the way you treat me so nice and polite. It's because you want something.
HOBBES: All I want is to go home. I was about to be married.
MAY: What's her name?
HOBBES: Sophie. I've got a picture.
MAY: Does she live in the real world?
HOBBES: Yeah. You know about that?
She bends down in front of him.
MAY: I heard you talking. I want to hear more. What's it like there?
HOBBES: It's nothing like this.
MAY: Are there flowers there?
HOBBES: You don't have to live like this.
She looks about ready to cry.
BH2: (OS) Hey.. where are you?
HOBBES: Help us.
BH2(OS): May...
EXT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
Establishing shot. All is quiet.
INT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
BH1 asleep. He wakes to a noise. Gets up. Looks out the window, everything's clear. He turns and Florence head butts him, knocking him out.
She opens the door to the basement and they escape.
EXT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
A warning shot stops them.
MAY: Where do you think you're going?
She's got a gun in one hand, Dexter in the other. They freeze.
HOBBES: We're leaving. I'd like my dog.
PINOCCHIO: Hobbes.
MAY: My dog now. (to Florence:) Drop the gun.
She does.
HOBBES: Go on. Shoot me.
PINOCCHIO: Hobbes.
HOBBES: Shoot all of us. What'll we be worth to you then. You're in charge now. I don't see anybody telling you what to do. You've got the power now. The power to do the right thing. Let us walk out of here. You can walk out of here too.
Cars on the road. May sees them. Cabot turns to look.
CABOT: Traffic, fast moving.
HOBBES: I just want to go home. I just want to see my girl.
Troop vehicles roll up. Santiago's men.
(yelling)
BH2 gets out of one of the Humvees.
Waters is in charge.
INT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
BH2 is torturing BH1.
BH1: Let go my ear, let go.
He is thrown to the floor
WATERS: Where is he? where's Hobbes?
BH2 kicks BH1, on the floor.
BH1: I don't know...don't know where they are.
BH2: Get down here! Come here. I want some answers here.
He gets May from upstairs.
MAY: I don't know anything.
BH2: What? Huh?
MAY: I don't know!
WATERS: You and Santiago had a deal.
He walks out.
BH2: They're here.
EXT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
WATERS: Fan out, find them, get in the vehicles, check the road, you men on the trail.
Soldiers: Go, go, go...
They go right past the tanker.
INT. TANKER - NIGHT
Silently, Pinocchio, Hobbes, Cabot and Florence hide.
ACT IV
INT. TANKER - NIGHT
Gas at the bottom.
HOBBES: Quiet. What're you doing?
PINOCCHIO: We're standing in six inches of. boo? boom in case you hadn't noticed.
HOBBES: She put us here to protect us.
PINOCCHIO: This is protecting us? If brains were alligators you couldn't get one
to bite you on the ass.
HOBBES: I convinced her to let us go.
PINOCCHIO: If this is letting us go...going for a ride in this fireball.
He tries to open the hatch.
EXT. BH HOUSE - NIGHT
May is looking at the tanker.
BH1: Don't leave us.
BH2: Shut up! (to May) If you didn't see nothing, how come this gun's been shot?
MAY: If you been making deals how come you didn't bother to tell me.
BH2: I asked you a question
MAY: Yeah, maybe you were planning on leaving and never coming back, going to
the real world..
BH2: Where'd you hear that? You know nothing about that.
MAY: You were just gonna leave me here.
BH2: You can't go. It won't work...oh, what do you know, you stupid vc?
MAY: Some guys think about going home just to see their girl.
She walks away.
BH2: Who has been talking to her?
He looks to BH1, who bolts nervously.
Waters approaches.
WATERS: You have to zero six hundred to turn over your prisoner. I would hate to disappoint Gen. Santiago.
INT. TANKER - NIGHT
The hatch opens. May is up there.
MAY: You'd better hurry they'll be back soon.
She hands Hobbes his gun. Hobbes grins. Pinocchio rolls his eyes.
EXT. TANKER - NIGHT
Hobbes helps May down. May picks up Dexter. Pinocchio gets behind the wheel of the truck. Florence gets in the cab. May gives Dexter to Hobbes, who hands him up into the cab.
HOBBES: You can't stay here.
MAY: He'll just hunt me down.
HOBBES: Come on, get in the cab. come on.
He holds out his hand to her. She's about to come with them when she's shot and zaps out.
BH1 runs out of the house, firing a rifle.
Hobbes shoots him. He looks annoyed as he dies.
Pinocchio pulls away as the troops return, shoot at tanker. Some of the troops move to close the fence, to keep them inside.
BH2 helps the troops fire at the truck.
Hobbes is outside the cab, firing back at them.
He pulls the pin disconnecting the tanker part from the truck cab. The tanker blows as the cab goes through the fence. The troops cars stop their pursuit.
Waters looks at BH2, who spits.
INT. ARMY OFFICE- DAY
Sophie bursting in again
SOLDIER: Can I help you. ma'am, I can't just let you in there.
SOPHIE: I don't care.
INT. LT. COL's OFFICE - DAY
SOPHIE: Lieutenant Colonel -
LT. COL. (on telephone) I'm sorry General, I didn't hear what you just said.
That's what I'll do, sir.
SOPHIE: I am owed an explanation.
LT. COL.: Ms Green you are out of line.
SOPHIE Because I am being lied to.
LT. COL. What on God's earth is this all about?
SOPHIE My fiance Tom Hobbes.
LT. COL. We buried his body.
SOPHIE All you buried was a box.
EXT. CEMETERY - DAY
Exhuming the coffin.
LT. COL.: We'll have to transport it.
SOPHIE: No. I don't want it taken anywhere.
They open the coffin. A name tag on the breast of a dress suit says "HOBBES."
The body is decayed, the face gone.
LT. COL. Seen enough, Ms. Green?
He pulls her away. She runs off.
Inga Fossa is waiting for her.
IF: You did this all wrong. You should have asked me.
SOPHIE: I don't need your permission.
IF: It's not him. It's not your fiance's body
SOPHIE: I got an inquest, you think I'm not going to make them run DNA?
IF: Who do you think is going to run those tests?
SOPHIE: This is insanity. No one - how far will these people go?
IF: One step farther than you. I can get word to him. I can deliver a message to Tom.
Sophie drives off in the truck.
Inga Fossa looks down. Reads the note.
SOPHIE (VO) Dear Tom, I am writing not quite believing you'll ever read this but if there is a way I hope to God this note will somehow bring you back to me. I love you Tom --

They run to greet him.
Florence turns away.

HOBBES: A man runs or turns and fights. What're you running from. Why are you afraid of Santiago?
PINOCCHIO I thought you wanted to go home.
