Scene: Elevator
A boy is standing in the elevator, pushing all of the buttons and smoking a cigarette. Nick enters, looks at boy, and looks irritated.
Boy: What?
The elevator stops and the doors open. Nick pushes a button, annoyed, and the doors close again.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, foyer
Nick: (to Gretchen) Morning, did a package arrive from Booth Fallen in Chicago?
The boy enters F&A.
Boy: Hey, is this Burton Fallin's office? (pause) Is this Burton Fallin's Office?!
Nick: Yes it is. What do you want?
Boy: What do you care? Bitch.
Burton and Liz walk past.
Burton: Well it's good to see you again Liz. I'm sure Jake will do a great job for you. He's a very bright young man.
Liz: I appreciate this, Burton.
Nick: Aunt Liz?
Burton: Oh. (smiling)
Liz: Nicholas?? Oh my goodness, look at you. It's been a long time.
They shake hands.
Nick: Yeah.
Liz: You look great.
Burton: Hehe.
Liz: And I see that you've met my son Jeremy (points towards the boy)
Nick and Jeremy look at each other.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, conference room
Burton, Nick, Jake and Liz are sitting around the table.
Burton: So Liz wants to sell her company to Vortex Communications.
Jake: What kind of company?
Liz: Advertising. You've heard of the Kliner Automotive Angry Penguin…
Jake: Oh I've seen that one..."We're freezing prices down here!!" (in a high pitched voice)
Burton chuckles.
Liz: Good. The Western Grocery Price Terminator?
Jake: Oh. That's funny... "Don't bid too much Pilgrim" (in a lower voice)
Liz: Ours.
Jake: Great.
Liz: The Hilcon Department Store Lingerie Day for Men, Beer Decathlon out in Munhall. And some national stuff too.
Jake: Very strong list of clients.
Burton: Very.
Liz: We bill almost two million a year.
Jake: All right, I'll look over all the papers and see what we can figure out.
Liz: Great. Nice to meet you, Jake. (rising and shaking hands with Jake)
Jake: Yeah, you too.
Liz: If you have any questions, call my accountant.
Burton: Bye.
Liz: Bye.
Jeremy appears at the door.
Jeremy: Mom, come on, I told my friends I'd be there like twenty damn minutes ago.
Liz: Don't you want to spend some time with your uncle and your cousin Nick?
Jeremy: No. (Sliding door shut and walking away)
Liz: Three more days of winter recess till he goes back to school. Three more days.
Burton: I know what you mean, hehe.
Liz leaves.
Jake: So, what's with the kid?
Burton: My nephew.
Jake: She's your sister?
Burton: No, my wife's sister. But now, Jake, I want you to understand, I don't like to mix family with business, so that's why I want you on point for this one. OK?
Jake: Fine. Got it covered.
Scene: Legal Services of Pittsburgh
Agnes Lenbert: I'm looking for James Mooney.
James: That's me.
Agnes: Hi, I'm Agnes Lenbert. I work for Social Services.
James: Who's she? (looking at the little girl standing next to Agnes)
Agnes: Her name is Kalaya Nurapatamnosai. She's a Thai national.
James: Hello Kalaya. My name is James.
Agnes: Oh, she doesn't speak much English.
James: Can we speak in private?
James's office
James: Why's she here?
Agnes: She was arrested at the airport yesterday with two adult Thai nationals who were smuggling heroin. She was posing as the drug smugglers daughter.
James: Were there any drugs found on her?
Agnes: No, she was just there to make it seem like a family vacation.
James: To Pittsburgh?
Agnes: Heh, not exactly a Thai dream.
James: No wonder they got caught. Where's she staying?
Agnes: At a locked shelter for juvenile offenders.
James: I don't understand why you're here …
Agnes: I think she wants asylum.
James: (slowly, to Kalaya) Do you speak any English?
Kalaya: Uncle Joe. Me and Uncle Joe. (hands a piece of paper to James)
James: (looks at the piece of paper) Do you want to stay with Uncle Joe? Does Uncle Joe live here? Does Uncle Joe know you're coming?
Kalaya: Uncle Joe. Me and Uncle Joe.
James: Get me and interpreter. I want to make sure she wants to stay.
Agnes: And if she does?
James: I'll see what I can do.
Scene: Apartment building
James knocks on an apartment door. A man answers the door.
James: I'm looking for Joe Nassurn.
The man just looks at James.
James: My name is James Mooney. I work for Legal Services of Pittsburgh. (slowly) Does Joe Nassurn live here? Do you expect him back?
The man shrugs.
James: If you see him, tell him that his niece Kalaya is at the Allegheny Children's Shelter, and to call me right away.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, foyer
Jeremy is sitting on the floor. Nick walks by.
Nick: Jeremy.
Jeremy: What's up?
Nick: Where's your mom?
Jeremy: She's in with your dad.
Nick: You're stuck here till they're through?
Jeremy: My mom is into us having some time together, wants to take me shopping.
Nick walks away.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, conference room
Nick, Burton, Jake and Vortex Communications President, Brian, are sitting around the conference room table.
Jake: The Kliner Automotive doubled their sales to fifty eight million dollars in the four years following the highly visible Angry Penguin ad campaign. Liz Hetherington has won the Adder...
Brian: ...and every regional and national ad award in print, TV and radio. I tried to buy Liz's company a year ago. What's different now?
Jake: Right. (looks at Burton) Well, she's been very impressed with the growth of your company over the past year, and sees this as a strong synergistic opportunity.
Brian: Let's get some numbers going.
Jake: Great.
Scene: Allegheny Children's Shelter
Joe from the apartment building walks up to James.
Joe: Mr. Mooney, right? I'm Joe Nassurn. Kalaya's uncle.
James: But earlier you said…
Joe: I didn't know who you were. I had to check you out. Listen, Kalaya's mother, she was a prostitute…
James: Your sister?
Joe: Yeah. She has a bunch of kids. She tried to get them out of Thailand. She didn't care how it happened.
James: So she sells them to drug dealers?
Joe: This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Can I see her?
James shows him to a room where Kalaya is asleep. Joe walks over to the bed.
Joe: Kalaya? Kalaya?
Joe suddenly runs out of the room.
James: Hey!!
James checks on Kalaya. She appears to be unconscious.
James: (into phone) I need an ambulance.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, Burton's office
Burton and Jake are conferring. Nick enters.
Nick: Someone stole my Palm Pilot.
Burton: Oh, well… welcome to the club. Jake left his wallet in his suit coat…
Jake: Three hundred bucks.
Burton: Yeah, and one of the secretaries is missing her disc player.
Nick: Can you excuse us for a second, Jake?
Jake: You bet.
Jake leaves.
Nick: You talked to Liz about this?
Burton: About what?
Nick: Jeremy.
Burton: Are you serious?
Nick: He was out there the whole time.
Burton: Even if it's true, I'm not going to call his mother and accuse her only son of stealing from us.
Nick leaves.
Scene: Hospital
Kayala lies unconscious in bed.
Agnes: They found four small balloons of heroin in her stomach. One of them leaked.
James: Is she going to be OK?
Agnes: Yeah. It was touch and go for a minute there, but I think she's going to be OK.
James: You ever heard of something like this happening before?
Agnes: Unfortunately, all the time. They fill balloons, condoms with heroin. Have the kids swallow them. Load them up with suppositories to keep them from moving their bowels for two or three days. Then when they get to the contact, they force feed them laxatives.
James: Uncle Joe.
Agnes: Exactly.
Scene: Liz's home
Nick, Burton, Liz and Jeremy are eating dinner together.
Liz: This is nice.
Burton: Very nice.
Liz: To be here with family, it's nice.
Burton: Uh-huh.
Burton: So Jeremy, how's school?
Jeremy: I go to the Townsend Academy, Uncle Burton, located in the lovely Cumberland County, away from any civilization, where we enjoy a small teacher-student ratio, great college placement and the constant aroma of cow dung.
Burton: Nick went to prep school.
Jeremy: Did you like it?
Nick: No, not really
Liz: Jeremy, didn't you want to ask Nick about soccer?
Jeremy: ... no.
Liz: Jeremy's on the soccer team.
Burton: Hmm.
Jeremy: Yeah, that was months ago, mom.
Liz: We thought it would be fun to go down to the Civic Arena. They're going to have a professional soccer ...
Jeremy: They don't want to do that mom.
Liz: Maybe they do.
Jeremy: You know, what is with you?! Huh?! Suddenly you want to spend time with me, suddenly you're inviting Cousin Ernie and Uncle Burt to soccer games…
Burton: Pass the wine please.
Jeremy: You know what? Allow me. (pouring himself a glass of wine)
Liz: Jeremy!!
Jeremy: What? Haven't you read the studies, Liz? A glass a day is actually good for you. Lowers your blood pressure.
Liz: And smoking's good for your lungs, right ?
Jeremy: What do you expect? You said we were a family full of addicts.
Liz: I never said that.
Jeremy: You said that you were the only one who wasn't hooked on something. That's unless you count the wine, you ... and then there's Nick who's famous for his zany hi-jinks ... and Nick's mom, pill freak.
Burton: Jeremy, I'm a guest in your house, right?
Jeremy: Yeah
Burton: So do you think it would be rude of me if I told you, as a guest, that you're a spoilt little jerk? What do you think?
Jeremy: I need a ride to this party. (stands up)
Liz: I am not taking you. We have guests.
Jeremy: Oh come on, mom. What am I going to do ... sit here and watch figure skating with you ?
Liz: Sit down.
Nick: I'll take you (stands up). It was very nice, thank you. (to Liz)
Scene: In Nick's car
Nick: Well, Jeremy, you sure do give your mom a hard time.
Jeremy: I see her, like, twice a year, OK? Winter break and then the month of July, and this is the first time she's even ever been around the house. I don't think she's actually a mom.
Nick: She told you about my mom taking pills?
Jeremy: Did she?
Nick: I don't know.
Jeremy: You don't know?
Nick: You know everything about your mom?
Jeremy: Bulls and Clippers are on tonight. The point spread is perfect for a killing. You want to put fifty on it?
Nick: You want to tell me why you stole my Palm Pilot?
Jeremy: What are you talking about??
Nick: From the office, earlier today. I want it back.
Jeremy: You know what? Screw you.
Nick: Yeah, my father's a little embarrassed to tell your mother, but, heh, I'm not.
Jeremy: I didn't take ANYTHING. All right, man?
They drive off.
Scene: Liz's house
Liz: I want to set something straight.
Burton: OK…
Liz: I never told Anne about your flirting with me. My mother saw us in the pool one afternoon that summer. I don't know where Anne was. But, we were wrestling around in the pool, and my mother saw and she jumped to a conclusion and told my sister.
Burton: OK
Liz: But it was the truth.
Burton: Liz, you were a kid. We were horsing around.
Liz: No we weren't.
Burton: What do you want from this Vortex deal?
Liz: At least 2.5 million. I need two million to take care of the debt, and that will leave me with five hundred thousand for Jeremy.
Burton: For Jeremy?
Liz: I have cancer. I'm scheduled to go to the hospital at the end of the week. I'd like this closed by then.
Burton: Oh God. I'm sorry, Liz.
Liz: Melanoma. They think it might be heading for my lymph nodes.
Burton: So what are they going to do for it?
Liz: I'm going to have surgery. They're going to cut it out. I'll do radiation and chemo, and that will be that. It's not a big deal Burton. They'll operate, they'll take it out, and that will be that.
Burton: What about Jeremy? Does he know about this?
Liz: Not yet.
Burton: When are you going to tell him?
Nick enters.
Nick: Ready?
Burton: Yeah, yeah. We'll talk tomorrow, OK? (to Liz)
Liz: (hugs Nick) Good to see you.
Nick: You too.
Liz hugs Burton.
Burton: It was great. Thank you.
Liz: Nick, I really hope that you and Jeremy can get to know each other. After his dad left, he's never really had any kind of male influence in his life.
Nick: Yeah, no, I think my father's probably a better choice for that kind of thing.
Liz: No, I can tell. Jeremy could really use a guy like you.
The phone rings.
Liz: Excuse me. (She leaves.)
Burton: (softly, to Nick) Liz is sick. Cancer.
Scene: Allegheny Courthouse
Jonathon Goldsmith: James Mooney?
James: Yeah.
Goldsmith: Jonathon Goldsmith from the US attorney's office. I understand Joe Nassurn paid you a visit.
James: That's right.
Goldsmith: The police checked the address. He's disappeared.
James: OK.
Goldsmith: Joe Nassurn has a lot of nieces and nephews, from Thailand, Cambodia, South America. They come through here loaded to the gills with dope. Stay at his apartment long enough to crap it out or puke it up, and then he gives them a small amount of money and sends them back home on the next plane.
James: What do you want?
Goldsmith: I want to know the name of the person who put your client on that plane in Thailand.
James: What will you give her for that?
Goldsmith: I'll make sure they don't prosecute her back home.
James: Prosecute?
Goldsmith: Thai juvenile justice is a lot different than ours.
James: She wants asylum.
Goldsmith: Mr. Mooney, don't be fooled. This is certainly not her first trip into the States carrying drugs. Her passport indicates she's been here twice before, and that's just this passport.
James: She's still a ten-year-old girl who needs a chance.
Goldsmith: I understand that, but I can't change the rules.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, conference room
Nick, Burton, Jake and Vortex Communications President are sitting around the table.
Brian: I'll pay Liz one and a half million.
Jake: We need to get to two.
Burton: (whispers to Jake) Two and a half.
Jake: Two point five.
Brian: There's nothing I'd like more than to pay Liz your number, but we're in the second straight year of an ad decline.
Burton: Brian, Liz doesn't have to sell, she's posting strong growth even in this slow time. I mean let's face it, this is the top ad firm in the city. Now either you want to do business with this woman, or you don't.
Brian: All right, let me talk to my board.
Jake: Your board? It was my understanding that you could get to yes.
Brian: I can.
Nick: Miss Hetherington offered you an exclusive first option because she believed that you would negotiate in good faith.
Brian: One point seven five million.
Burton: Two point five.
Brian: For that she has to sign a five-year employment agreement with strict non-compete terms.
Burton: No, no, Brian, that ties up too much of her time.
Brian: Without Liz, this company's nothing but phones and paper. And we'll expect you to get a life insurance policy. That's not a problem, is it?
Jake: No, it's not a problem at all.
Nick and Burton glance at each other.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, Burton's office
There is a knock at the door.
Burton: Come in.
Jake enters.
Jake: Burton, I'm confused.
Burton: I'm sure you are, Jake.
Jake: You asked me to take point, and then you kind of undercut my authority in there.
Burton: Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
Jake: We could have closed it clean for one point seven five.
Burton: I know.
Jake: So now we just sit it out.
Burton: Liz has cancer, Jake.
Jake: What?
Burton: Found out last night.
Jake: Is it serious?
Burton: Mm-hmm.
Jake: Burton, I'm so sorry. (Starts to leave.) You know, you should have told me about this before the meeting. I am trying to get Vortex as our client, and I, I really don't want to do a deal with something that can turn out badly.
Jake leaves.
Scene: Allegheny Courthouse
James: The US attorney wants names from Kalaya.
Agnes: What does Kalaya get?
James: Protection from the Thai penal system.
Agnes: Come on, she'll be dead in the streets.
James: Yeah. That's why I didn't take the deal.
Agnes: I lined up a couple of prospective foster parents. You think we have any kind of a shot in here today?
James: Probably not, Miss Agnes.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, Burton's office
Liz: How did it go today?
Burton: Well, they want you to get life insurance.
Liz: I can't do it.
Burton: Well then the deal may not come off.
Liz: I told you about my little problem because we're family. It has nothing to do with this deal.
Burton: Now, I didn't say a word to them about that. This is just standard stuff. When an individual is a commodity, people want insurance.
Liz: Fine, I'll get another lawyer.
Burton: What?
Liz: I'll go to Kirk and McGee
Burton: (chuckles) Liz, there are other ways to approach this thing.
Liz: You never change, Burton.
Burton: What does that mean?
Liz: You lawyer everybody. Question everything. You talk about the rules. I'm asking you to do a simple deal.
Burton: And I'm telling you this is not a simple deal.
Liz: Did someone tell them about this?
Burton: Well I didn't betray you.
Liz: You told them, didn't you?
Burton: Of course I didn't. I'll trying to help you.
Liz: This is exactly how you were with my sister.
Burton: I am NOT going to have that conversation, you understand? This is about business. Right now your deal does not look so good, because you can't get life insurance. Now I suggest you relax and look at your other options.
Liz: Like what?
Burton: Like I go to Vortex personally, see if I can get them to back off the insurance demand. It'd probably lower the price, and I'm not even sure they'd go for it, but they might. But before I do anything, you've got to decide on your lowest number.
Scene: Courtroom
James: Kalaya is an orphan. If she were to return to Bangkok she would be reunited with the band of exploitive drug runners. The odds of her surviving are minimal. The odds of her living a normal life are zero.
District Attorney: Your Honor, we cannot grant asylum based on an individual's socio-economic situation, or lack of family. We just can't.
James: Your Honor, with the help of Social Services we have found a responsible couple willing to take care of Kalaya. If she were to stay here, she would have a chance to live a normal life, a chance to be a person, and not a 62 pound heroin suitcase.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, conference room
Nick is working alone at the table. Jeremy enters.
Nick: Hey.
Jeremy pulls a disc player, a roll of money and a Palm Pilot out of his bag.
Jeremy: Thank you for not telling my mom.
Nick: Well thank you for bringing it back.
Jeremy: Look Nick, the reason, the whole reason I took them…
Nick: You don't need to tell me Jeremy.
Jeremy: Well, I'm in trouble at school, with some kids.
Nick: What do you mean? (still looking down at his paper-work)
Jeremy: Well, the whole thing is I met these kids from Masyton, and they take bets on like, sports games and stuff…
Nick: Making book.
Jeremy: Yeah, yeah, making book. And uhh, I'm kind of like ... kind of like their representative at my school.
Nick: OK, shut the door and sit down.
Jeremy shuts the door and takes a seat.
Jeremy: And so this kid, he bets five thousand dollars on the Alamo Bowl…
Nick: And loses?
Jeremy: It's 44 in the over under, right? And there's like ten seconds left in the game, and the score's 23 to 20, and so everything's good, you know, but then the quarterback, he fumbles…
Nick: OK, just get to the point Jeremy.
Jeremy: So this kid ends up losing, and I go to him and he doesn't pay me. Instead he goes to the Dean, and the Dean expels me.
Nick: When did this happen?
Jeremy: Three weeks ago. I don't know. But there's two days left in winter break, and I can't even go back to school.
Nick: And what about the money?
Jeremy: God, I owe this guy six thousand dollars now and next week it's going to be seven and he says if I don't have it by the end of the week, he's going to come to my house and take it from my mother.
Nick: (standing up) Let's get some lunch.
Scene: Courtroom
Bailiff: All rise.
Judge: Having reviewed the petition briefs and based on arguments presented, I hereby deny the petitioner's request for asylum.
James: Your Honor, may I be heard?
Judge: You have been heard, Mr. Mooney. There's no legal basis to grant asylum here. The petitioner shall be returned to her home immediately upon her release from the hospital.
Scene: The Incline
Nick and Jeremy are eating lunch.
Nick: How long you been out of school?
Jeremy: I got kicked out two weeks before the winter recess.
Nick: What have you been doing?
Jeremy: Oh, intercepting mail, phone calls, just trying to figure something out basically.
Nick: Well, you've got to tell your mom.
Jeremy's cell phone rings. He looks at it but doesn't answer.
Jeremy: That's the bookie. I'm not going to answer it. (Nick looks at him.)
Jeremy: What? I don't have the money. What do you want me to do?
Nick: OK, tell your mom. She gives you the money, you're out of debt. Then you enroll in a public school.
Jeremy: You make it, you make it sound just so easy. It's not.
Nick: I will give you until tonight to tell your mom.
Jeremy: Nick, please man. I will get the money, OK? That's not a problem. I'll get it from this other guy who owes me anyway, and I can pay him back with that and she'll never know.
Jeremy's cell phone rings again. He doesn't answer.
Jeremy: Please don't make me sorry I told you this.
Jeremy leaves.
Scene: Allegheny Courthouse
Goldsmith: Your client won't talk?
James: Not on your terms.
Goldsmith: What do you want?
James: An S visa.
Goldsmith: No.
James: You said…
Goldsmith: I said that I would talk to the Thai authorities. I didn't say I'd give her a snitch visa.
James: You want the people? My client will give you names.
Goldsmith: And how do I know she's right? How do I know these names haven't been made up? I mean it's one thing to offer leniency, but for a visa…
James: What do you want?
Goldsmith: I want her to go back to the informant.
James: Go back?
Goldsmith: The DEA, with the Thai authority, would follow her. We could catch them in the act. That, I could sell. That would get her a snitch visa.
James: You guys are no better than the drug dealers.
Goldsmith: Excuse me?
James: You want to use Kalaya to do your dirty work. If she dies in the process, who cares, right?
Goldsmith: You want the deal?
James nods reluctantly.
Scene: Liz's home
Liz: If I don't get two-and-a-half, Jeremy will have nothing.
Burton: Well, I'll go at it again, but you should have a backup plan, just in case this thing goes south.
Liz: Like what?
Burton: Well, talk to your son about his options.
Liz: I don't want Jeremy involved in this.
Burton: He is involved in this.
Jeremy enters, looking a little roughed-up. He sits down. Liz sits down next to him.
Liz: Oh my God. Jeremy, what happened to you?
Jeremy: I was at the mall, and these black kids came up to me and they asked me for some money, so I started to run, but then there were more of them, and they cornered me and they pushed me, and took my wallet.
Nick: Which mall?
Jeremy: The Riverside.
Nick: It's a pretty crowded place, Jeremy. Did you tell the police?
Jeremy: No, I was scared.
Nick: Who gave you a ride home?
Burton and Liz look at Nick.
Liz: Nick, what is wrong with you?
Nick: Jeremy?
Jeremy: (looks at Nick) No. (softly)
Nick: If you don't tell her, I will.
Liz: Tell me what?
Jeremy: Mom, do you know in some offices and stuff they'll have, like, a football pool?
Liz: Gambling?
Jeremy: Yeah, sure. Well, they have something like that at my school, and I kind of got involved. And usually I'm pretty good at, at picking the teams and September I was…
Nick: Just say it.
Jeremy: I owe a bookie six thousand dollars.
Liz: (shocked) We're going to have to tell the school.
Jeremy: Yeah they know. They kicked me out. I swear to God I will pay you back. If you let me borrow this money, I will, I will work next summer, I'll mow lawns…
Liz: (upset) Next summer?
Jeremy: Two summers. Whatever it takes, I will do, and I can go to public school and with the money we save…
Liz: (starts crying) Jeremy, please. (stands) Will you excuse us?
Burton: Yeah, sure.
Jeremy goes upstairs with Liz. Burton stands up. Nick walks across the room and picks up a photograph of two little girls.
Nick: This is my mother?
Burton: Yeah, yeah, at twelve years old. Cape Cod.
Nick looks at the photograph and smiles. A door slams.
Liz: Jeremy! Jeremy! (Jeremy runs down the stairs and out the door.) Jeremy. (She comes running down the stairs.) He took my keys.
We hear a car starting up outside.
Liz: He doesn't know how to drive.
Scene: Hospital
Kalaya is lying in bed. James is looking impatiently out the door.
James: I'm waiting for that interpreter lady. I guess she had something to do, or something. (slowly) The doctor says you're going to be fine. Good news. Kind of wish you weren't doing this well, buy me some time. But as it stands they're going to release you this afternoon. Got you on a plane tonight at ten o'clock, so … (He sits on the edge of the bed.) That's it. They're not going to let you stay. Sorry. (stands up and looks away)
Kalaya: Thank you for trying to help me.
James: (looks back at Kalaya) So you do speak English. (She shrugs.) You still want to stay here?
Kalaya: Yes.
James: (sitting beside her) We've got one more option, but you're going to have to go home first. You're going to have to help us, catch the people who sent you here in the first place.
Kalaya: Do you want me to show them where I get the drugs?
James: Yes. Yes. Can you do that?
Kalaya nods.
Scene: On the street
Jeremy has crashed the car into a tree, and is sitting on the ground next to the tree. Nick drives up, gets out of his car and runs over to Jeremy.
Nick: Jeremy, just lie down. Lie down. (lays Jeremy's head on the ground) (to phone) Yeah, hi, there's been an accident on Oakview Drive.
Jeremy stands up and walks slowly towards the car.
Nick: (to phone) Cross street, Hickory Ridge. Yeah, yeah, there's a boy. He may be hurt.
Jeremy: I'm OK.
Nick: (walks towards Jeremy and takes him by the shoulders) Jeremy, sit down. Just come back. Sit down.
Jeremy: It's like hitting a… silk… bag… body… stings.
Nick lays Jeremy on the ground and covers him with his coat, then kneels beside him.
Nick: (pointing a finger at Jeremy) Let me tell you something. The sooner you stop thinking people should cut you slack because your parents got divorced and sent you away to prep school, or because your mom has cancer 'cos believe me, believe me, no one cares about your problems. Believe me.
We hear an ambulance siren in the distance.
Scene: Fallin & Associates, conference room
Brian and another man are seated at the table. Burton, Liz and Jake enter.
Jake: Brian. (shaking hands with Brian)
Brian: Morning.
Jake: Good to see you. (shaking hands with Greg) Greg.
Brian shakes hands with Burton and Liz.
Liz: Brian.
Burton: How are you?
Brian: All right. Good to see you.
Everyone sits down.
Brian: So where were we?
Liz: I can't accept your offer. I can't sell you my company because I'm its only real asset and I may be dying. I've known I've had cancer for a while now, but I just put it behind me, pretended it wasn't happening.
Brian: I'm sorry Liz, I truly am.
Liz: I'm not telling you this for your sympathy. I still want to do business with you.
Brian: How do you see doing that?
Jake: Well, we're suggesting restructuring the deal as a joint venture, rather than a purchase.
Brian: What terms?
Burton: Half a million up front for the business and 50% of all revenue generated by her clients over the next twenty years.
Brian: You think you're going to make it Liz?
Liz: I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't.
Burton chuckles. Jake and Brian smile.
Scene: Parking garage of hospital, in Burton's car
Liz: (removing her seatbelt) You don't have to come in here.
Burton: Liz, the other day, you told me about my leaving your sister. You should know that it was the other way around.
Liz: I was there Burton. Don't start revising history now.
Burton: You were just a teenage girl.
Liz: She told me all about it.
Burton: About the affairs? Pill habit?
Liz: That's not true.
Burton: She left me, alright? Or at least drove me out the door. She took drugs and she was not faithful. Leaving her was probably the smartest thing I could have done. I tried to get custody of Nicholas. That was a different time, I didn't have a chance in hell. She got sick. I, I went back to her, to take care of her, to nurse her through to the end. She was very grateful for that. Very loving in fact. And I'd appreciate it if that conversation is never repeated, especially around Nicholas.
Liz: He doesn't know?
Burton: His mother's dead, he loved her. Why take that away from him?
Liz: (wiping away a tear) You don't need to come in.
Scene: Legal Services of Pittsburgh, conference room
Goldsmith: When the people in Thailand ask you what happened, just tell them we sent you home and the others were arrested.
A woman translates to Thai. Kalaya nods.
Goldsmith: After that, just do what you normally do. Don't look around. Don't act suspicious. You don't have to find us. We'll be there.
The woman translates. Kalaya nods and turns to James.
Kalaya: I can do this, and when I come back I will ask for James Mooney, OK? I will ask for you when I come back.
Goldsmith: We'd better go.
Kalaya turns to leave. James grabs Kalaya's arm.
James: Be careful.
Kalaya nods and walks away.
Scene: Fallin & Associates
Nick enters the foyer and sees Jeremy.
Nick: I thought you started public school today.
Jeremy: No. I didn't like it.
Nick: Oh, you didn't like it.
Jeremy: (stands up and walks alongside Nick) No, the kids are, like, stupid. They're studying crap I did like three years ago. Plus I had to go through two metal detectors. Then some ass shoved gum in my locker, so I came here.
Nick and Jeremy enter the conference room. Jeremy pours himself a glass of water and takes a sip.
Nick: You visit your mom?
Jeremy: No.
Nick: You going to?
Jeremy: Yeah.
Nick: When?
Jeremy: Soon, OK? Would you get off my back please? I just came here to visit, and say hello.
Nick slides the doors shut.
Nick: Here's how it works. Sit down. (Jeremy sits.) Radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Basically they're going to bring your mother as close to death as they possibly can without killing her. She's going to change before your eyes. Her hair will fall out. She will be in a lot of pain. She will be susceptible to everything. (He sits.) She's going to feel ugly, and useless, and very alone, and afraid. And you're going to have to be tough for her. You can't treat this like it's your problem, that she has cancer, because it's not. It's hers. And the further she goes, the longer she lasts, the sicker she will get. And you will pray that she can make it through the next round, because if they give up on her, and if she gets too weak, then she will die. And if she dies, Jeremy, you do not want to look back at this time and remember that you behaved like a spoiled child. If she dies, and she gives you the gift of letting you into that process, the knowledge of what it is, then I hope, for your sake that you walk out of this a stronger person. You have that choice now. Don't screw it up.
Nick leaves.
Scene: Hospital, Liz's room
Liz is lying in bed, signing a form. A nurse places a clip on her finger and leaves. Burton enters.
Burton: Hey. How ya doing? (takes a seat next to the bed)
Liz: Oh, hi.
Burton: Oh, interesting. A little reading material when you get a chance. (He places magazines and newspaper next to her pillow) Oh, Liz, listen. I was, I was thinking. It might be very good for the boy if you assigned a power of attorney or had a living will.
Liz: You'll help me with that?
Burton: Sure, yeah.
Liz: Thank you.
Burton: I think it's a good idea. Yeah.
Liz: Thank you.
Nick appears at the door.
Burton: Oh, Nick. How ya doing?
Nick: Hi.
Liz: Nick.
Nick: How you doing?
Liz: It's so sweet of you to come. I'm just, I'm so tired that I'm going to have to go to sleep, but you both don't need to stay.
Burton: No, it's OK. As a matter of fact, there's a couple of articles in here I want to check out. I'll be fine. Don't worry about me, or Nick.
Nick takes a seat behind Burton. Burton takes the pen and file from Liz and places them on the bed. He sits down again.
Burton: (softly, to Nick) Do you remember one night, your mother was half asleep, and she was mumbling about some house she had made up, and she said there has to be a room for everything in your life. A sleeping room, a happy room, a playing room, a sad room…
Nick: (smiles) … and a room for Nick.
Burton: (smiles) A room for Nick.
Jeremy appears at the door.
Burton: Hey. (Motions for him to come in.) Come on. (Jeremy walks towards the bed.) She's sleeping. She took it.
Jeremy looks at his mother, then bends over and kisses her on the cheek. He looks up at Nick who gives a slight, approving smile.
