SISKO
Station Log. Stardate 46925.1. We
have been honored with a visit by a
delegation of Federation ambassadors
on a "fact-finding" mission to the
wormhole. Fortunately I have just
the officer to take them off my hands.
2 INT. QUARK'S
BASHIR is with a Vulcan male, (LOJAL)... a Bolian male,
(VADOSIA)... and an Arbazan woman (TAXCO). They are all
middle-aged, intimidating and in a bad mood. Bashir is
uncomfortable and defensive in his attempt to be charming.
BASHIR
I wish there was something I could
do, Ambassador but...
TAXCO
Madame ambassador...
BASHIR
Madame ambassador... unfortunately,
all the guest quarters on the station
are roughly the same size...
TAXCO
Then move me to the crew level.
BASHIR
All the quarters on the crew level
are currently occupied...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 2.
2 CONTINUED:
TAXCO
Then someone can move... you, for
example...
VADOSIA
She did the same thing during the
voyage here. She's never satisfied...
TAXCO
At least I didn't bother the Captain
every hour with some new suggestion
on how to run his ship...
VADOSIA
He welcomed my suggestions... as I'm
sure your Commander Sisko will welcome
them...
(beat, making a point)
... if we ever get to spend any time
with him.
BASHIR
Commander Sisko is extremely busy...
VADOSIA
With what?
BASHIR
With...
(searching)
... the recalibration sweep.
LOJAL
(interest piqued)
What are you recalibrating?
BASHIR
...Everything. It's a... sweeping...
recalibration of all systems...
LOJAL
I cannot speak for the others, but I
would be fascinated to observe this
recalibration, Doctor.
BASHIR
You... would? After your long trip,
I was thinking perhaps you all might
enjoy stopping by a holosuite... ?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 3.
2 CONTINUED: (2)
Quick and overlapping dialogue:
TAXCO
(aghast)
Are you actually suggesting we indulge
in one of those disgusting Ferengi
sex programs?
BASHIR
(quick)
No... I... the holosuites are capable
of creating many different...
VADOSIA
(likes the idea)
Of course that was what he was
suggesting.
(to Bashir)
The Arbazan are so sexually
repressed...
TAXCO
This is outrageous.
BASHIR
Perhaps we should... all... just get
some rest then...
LOJAL
I did not come all this way to rest,
Doctor. I would like to see your
facility.
TAXCO
A first-year officer assigned as our
liaison. Starfleet command will
hear of this...
BASHIR
Ambassador... Madame ambassador, I'm
only...
They are interrupted by a woman's scream... as they turn to
see what it is --
3 ANGLE - LWAXANA TROI
at a dabo table, surrounded by other Players... including
one small, weasely looking Dopterian who looks like a distant
cousin to a Ferengi... who casually stands back and moves
away as she pats her hands over her wig...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 4.
3 CONTINUED:
LWAXANA
It's gone! It's gone!
Bashir rolls his eyes, now what... moves to her...
BASHIR
What's gone, Madame Ambassador?
LWAXANA
My latinum hairbrooch.
BASHIR
(calling for)
Quark!
LWAXANA
I'd just made a third straight cross
and I leaned over the table to pick
up the dice again and I felt someone
brush against me... my God, I've
been wigged...
QUARK moves quickly into the fray...
QUARK
What's the problem here?
BASHIR
Someone has stolen Ambassador Troi's
latinum hairbrooch.
QUARK
I'm sorry but as the sign says...
the establishment is not responsible
for the loss of any personal items...
LWAXANA
Sign? What sign?
QUARK
The one above the door.
Bashir squints in the direction of the door...
BASHIR
You'd have to stand on the bar to
read it...
QUARK
Rules of the house. I'm very sorry.
Have a nice day.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 5.
3 CONTINUED: (2)
She grabs him by the ear and pulls him, grimacing with
pain, to his full height.
LWAXANA
You're dealing with the daughter of
the fifth house, keeper of the chalice
of Rixx, heir to the holy rings of
Betazed...
QUARK
Aah! Not my ear, please...
LWAXANA
Yes, I know where it hurts the most,
you little troll. Now, I want this
room sealed and everyone strip-
searched until my brooch...
ODO (O.S.)
May I be of service?
4 ANGLE
as they turn to ODO's arrival... she lets Quark go.
BASHIR
Yes, thank goodness.
(to Lwaxana)
Our security chief, Odo.
ODO
What seems to be the problem?
LWAXANA
My hairbrooch has been stolen, it's
been in my family for thirty-six
generations, it's absolutely
priceless, and I want it back.
Odo gives Mrs. Troi a piercing look.
ODO
You're certain you were wearing it
today.
LWAXANA
Of course, I'm certain. I never use
this hair without it.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 6.
4 CONTINUED:
ODO
I see.
(beat)
You're Betazoid?
LWAXANA
Of course.
ODO
Telepathic.
LWAXANA
Yes.
ODO
And you sense no guilt anywhere in
this room?
A beat as she checks... eventually turns back to Quark --
LWAXANA
(suspicious)
No, but Betazoids can't read...
Ferengis...
ODO
Quark has plenty of reasons to feel
guilty, but he usually doesn't have
to resort to petty theft to fleece
his clients.
QUARK
(honor restored)
Thank you.
Odo moves away, scanning the room with his piercing gaze.
His eye falls on...
5 ANGLE - THE DOPTERIAN
making a point of being inconspicuous. But when he realizes
that Odo's focused on him... he starts to move quickly toward
the door... as Odo moves to intercept, he moves faster
still... but can't get by him... Odo grabs him by the arm
hard and snaps him back...
ODO
Empty your pockets.
The Dopterian hesitates... looks around for some escape...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - TEASER 7.
5 CONTINUED:
ODO
Now!
The Dopterian chagrined, empties his pockets... and as he
puts things on the table... we see a variety of stolen
objects... a Starfleet combadge...
ODO
Since when did you join Starfleet?
And more... a necklace... a Bajoran earring...
VOICE (O.S.)
Hey, that's my earring...
And finally a hairbrooch...
LWAXANA
That's it... that's my brooch.
She takes it... Odo nods pleasantly --
LWAXANA
But how did you know?
ODO
Dopterians are distant relatives of
the Ferengi... it made sense that if
you couldn't read Quark, you might
not be able to read this charming
fellow either.
LWAXANA
How perfectly brilliant of you.
Odo nods, pushes the Dopterian toward the door and as he
EXITS with his prisoner, Lwaxana trains her eyes on him...
and before he can escape, takes Bashir intimately by the
arm, still watching Odo's departure with designs...
LWAXANA
Doctor, I want to know everything
there is to know about your security
chief...
Off Bashir's reaction...
FADE OUT.

FADE IN:
(NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes)
6 INT. OPS (VPB)
KIRA at her station. DAX at hers. O'BRIEN is working in
his area with a young, attractive Bajoran female apprentice,
ANARA... They're working different panels, O'Brien already
frustrated with the computer...
O'BRIEN
Computer, is the diagnostic on the
fusion powerplant finished yet?
COMPUTER VOICE
Affirmative. The fusion powerplant
is operating within normal
parameters...
O'BRIEN
What are you talking about...
(off sensors)
It's thirteen percent below normal.
COMPUTER VOICE
Cardassian specifications accept
operating efficiency within twenty
percent.
O'BRIEN
Well, I don't.
(beat)
Anara...
She comes over...
ANARA
Yessir.
O'BRIEN
(tutorial)
How much do you know about the carbon
reaction chambers... ?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 9.
6 CONTINUED:
ANARA
I've learned a little about laser-
induced fusion... not much more than
the basics...
O'BRIEN
It's a bloody inefficient system and
if I could, I'd trade it in for a
Federation model tomorrow. But it's
all we've got. Do me a favor and
just keep an eye on the exhaust plasma
temperature...
She acknowledges, goes to a console...
O'BRIEN
Computer, increase deuterium flow by
five percent to reaction chamber
two...
COMPUTER VOICE
Procedure is not recommended.
O'BRIEN
Listen, I've had enough of your
opinions, computer, just do it.
COMPUTER VOICE
Procedure is not recommended. Consult
Cardassian operational guidelines,
paragraph two-fifty-four-A, now on
screen.
O'Brien blinks as he looks at a page of a tech manual that
appears on a monitor...
O'BRIEN
I don't want to read your tech manual,
dammit. Fine. We'll do it ourselves.
Hits some switches... to Anara --
O'BRIEN
Re-initializing reactor two...
directing plasma stream to conduits
one forty-three... one-forty-four...
and one forty --
ANARA
(interrupting)
Chief O'Brien...
(looking at her console)
The power flow from reactor two
has just been shut down...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 10.
6 CONTINUED: (2)
O'BRIEN
What? Computer, analyze reactor two
failure...
SISKO exits his office, moving past O'Brien, pauses to react
as --
COMPUTER VOICE
Reactor two was shut down after
sensors detected a potential overload
of the carbon reaction chambers.
O'Brien hangs his head in frustration...
O'BRIEN
That's it. That's the straw.
SISKO
Relax, Chief. It's just a computer.
O'BRIEN
She's no computer, sir. She's my
arch enemy.
SISKO
You've got it working just fine, as
far as I can tell.
O'BRIEN
Fine? Commander, with all due
respect, as an engineer, I couldn't
look at myself in the mirror if I
let this computer continue to perform
as it does now. I really need to do
a root canal.
SISKO
Root canal?
O'BRIEN
Engineering shorthand, sir. I'm
gonna have to get into her guts and
rebuild her from the ground up.
SISKO
How long will that take?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 11.
6 CONTINUED: (3)
O'BRIEN
Well, I'm still not all that familiar
with Cardassian technology... but
I'd guess no more than... oh, two,
three years.
SISKO
(reacts)
That's going to take a lot of man-
hours. Is it really necessary?
O'BRIEN
(frustrated)
You don't understand...
SISKO
Let's just say I don't have your
sensitivity to the computer.
O'BRIEN
(offended)
That's all right. It doesn't matter.
SISKO
Chief...
O'BRIEN
Forget it. It's all right.
SISKO
Chief, I want you to do what you
have to do.
In the background, Bashir and the three ambassadors arrive
on the Turbolift...
O'BRIEN
(pleased)
Yessir. Thank you, sir. I'll get
on it right away.
Sisko turns away only to be confronted by the ambassadors...
he covers an unhappy reaction...
BASHIR
And this is... Ops...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 12.
6 CONTINUED: (4)
VADOSIA
The heart and soul of Deep Space
Nine. Ah, there you are, Commander...
SISKO
(cordial)
Gentlemen, Madame Ambassador...
He throws a subtle annoyed glance at Bashir for letting them
up here...
BASHIR
They insisted on seeing Operations,
sir...
The Vulcan moves into O'Brien's area and looks over his
shoulder annoyingly...
SISKO
Of course. Please make yourself at
home. I trust Doctor Bashir is taking
care of all your needs.
TAXCO
He refuses to change my
accommodations... if I have to sleep
another night on a Cardassian bed...
with those gargoyles staring at me
from the woodpoles...
KIRA
Commander, unidentified vessel coming
through the wormhole...
Sisko moves away from the group...
SISKO
(to them)
Excuse me.
(to Kira)
On screen.
Bashir goes to take the Vulcan out of O'Brien's way...
BASHIR
You'll have a better view from over
here, Ambassador...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 13.
7 ANGLE (OPTICAL)
to include the viewscreen showing the wormhole opening and a
small cylinder come through... Bashir plays host to the
junket, trying to keep them out of the way...
BASHIR
Quite a sight, isn't it?
The wormhole flashes off...
8 ON THE AMBASSADORS
VADOSIA
That's it? That's the whole thing?
BASHIR
Well, yes, it's...
VADOSIA
I was expecting... more... somehow.
9 RESUME WIDE (OPTICAL)
with the vessel on Viewscreen.
DAX
Scanners aren't picking up any
lifeforms on board.
SISKO
A probe?
DAX
Might be.
(checking)
I'm reading an extensive computer
array... but no signals that would
suggest it's trying to maintain
contact with a mother ship...
SISKO
Are the computers compatible with
ours... ?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT ONE 14.
9 CONTINUED:
DAX
Hard to tell. I don't recognize any
known subprocessor patterns.
10 ANGLE - THE AMBASSADORS
The Vulcan desperately wants to get in on the action.
LOJAL
(to Bashir)
The young woman obviously doesn't
have the necessary experience...
perhaps if I...
BASHIR
(pulling him back)
That young woman has over three
hundred years of experience,
Ambassador...
11 RESUME
Oblivious to all that --
DAX
I might have better luck if we towed
it into the docking ring...
SISKO
No.
(beat, thoughtful)
Not until we know a little more about
it. Major, tow it to five hundred
meters off the docking ring...
KIRA
Yessir.
SISKO
Mister O'Brien, try to set up an
adaptive interface link and see if
we can download any information from
it.
O'BRIEN
Aye, sir.
12 ANGLE
as Sisko glances past Bashir...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT ONE 15.
12 CONTINUED:
BASHIR
I think it would be best if we clear
this area...
VADOSIA
But this probe may represent contact
with a new species...
(moving forward)
Commander, I think it would be
appropriate for at least one
Federation ambassador to be present
at this historic occasion... and
since I have a particular interest
in first contact procedures...
SISKO
(deft)
I appreciate your interest,
Ambassador. And to keep you all
fully informed, I'm scheduling a
briefing at oh-four hundred. In the
meantime, Doctor Bashir, the best
view of this probe will be from the
docking ring near port seven...
BASHIR
I'll show them the way.
Sisko nods and turns away and moves to Dax to look as busy
as possible... glances back to make sure they're gone...
13 INT. SECURITY OFFICE
Odo is bent over his console, completely engrossed in his
work. He doesn't notice...
14 LWAXANA
... watching admiringly from the doorway. She is dressed to
kill, wears a wig.
LWAXANA
Such concentration. Such intensity.
Such a passion for your work...
tracking intergalactic malefactors.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 16.
15 ODO
... looks up as she ENTERS.
ODO
Most people find it rather tedious.
LWAXANA
Tedious? Those of us who have been
the beneficiaries of your heroism
would never call your work tedious.
We've learned that on this station,
you are the thin beige line between
order and chaos...
ODO
(serious)
That's my job.
He rises.
ODO
Now, what can I do for you... you
haven't lost anything else, I hope.
LWAXANA
Only my heart.
ODO
I beg your pardon?
LWAXANA
Is Odo your first or last name?
ODO
Yes.
LWAXANA
Ah, then I can just call you...
ODO
Odo.
She's much too close to him for comfort. He moves to another
part of the console. She follows and continues to stalk
him.
LWAXANA
It has a certain lyrical quality.
ODO
Lyrical?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 17.
15 CONTINUED:
LWAXANA
Odo. It rolls... off the tongue.
Her mouth so very close to his.
ODO
I have a lot of work to do.
LWAXANA
I'm told you're a shape-shifter.
ODO
That's correct.
LWAXANA
I've never been with a shape-shifter.
ODO
"Been with... "?
LWAXANA
I've heard you're the only one of
your kind.
ODO
So far.
LWAXANA
All the men I've known... who've
needed to be shaped and molded and
manipulated. Finally, I've met a
man who knows how to do it himself.
A beat as they look into each other's eyes -- hers with lust --
his with terror...
ODO
Was that the com... ? I think it
was. Excuse me, I'm wanted in Ops.
And he races out... as she watches him go, she smiles and...
FADE OUT.
END OF ACT ONE
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 18.
ACT TWO
FADE IN:
16 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)
Establishing.
17 INT. OPS
O'Brien and Anara are in the engineering station. Dax at
hers.
COMPUTER VOICE
Initiating high-resolution scan...
memory nodes located... proceeding
with data transfer...
O'BRIEN
(surprised)
There you go... who woulda thought...
DAX
You seem surprised, Chief...
O'BRIEN
Yeah, well, knowing this computer, I
thought I'd have to reconfigure the
whole emulator module to get her to
be compatible with the probe... but
she's cooperating for a change...
Odo arrives on the Turbolift, moves across Ops to the
Commander's office...
COMPUTER VOICE
Transfer of data is complete...
O'BRIEN
(mostly to himself)
Well done, computer.
DAX
Computer, run standard code
translations on probe data... isolate
syntax results...
COMPUTER VOICE
Processing, stand by.
O'Brien beams...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 19.
18 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE
Sisko working at his desk.
SISKO
Come in.
Odo ENTERS...
SISKO
Yes, Odo...
ODO
Commander, I have a problem.
SISKO
Quark again... ?
ODO
Nossir, this one's named Lwaxana.
SISKO
Lwaxana Troi... the ambassador... ?
ODO
That's her. There was a minor
incident at the bar that I helped
her with... and now... she's...
grateful.
SISKO
What's the problem?
ODO
The manner in which she expresses
her gratitude.
Sisko reacts curiously.
ODO
(continuing)
To be honest, Commander, she seems
interested in me.
SISKO
What's wrong with that?
ODO
She's extremely aggressive.
SISKO
I see. So, she's after you.
ODO
Like a Wanoni tracehound.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT TWO 20.
18 CONTINUED:
A beat, a thought...
SISKO
Have you thought of letting her catch
you?
ODO
Sir?
SISKO
A little romance, Odo.
ODO
I have six pylons that need a complete
security sweep... I don't have time
for romantic interludes... frankly,
in my humble opinion, most of you
humanoids spend far too much time on
your respective mating rituals...
SISKO
It does help the procreation of one's
species...
ODO
Procreation does not require changing
how you smell or writing bad poetry
or sacrificing various plants to
serve as tokens of affection... In
any event, it is all irrelevant to
me.
SISKO
I'm sorry to hear that.
ODO
I would appreciate it if you would
do something about this woman.
SISKO
Me?
ODO
Just tell her to leave me alone.
SISKO
Constable, you can handle thieves
and killers but not one Betazoid
woman... ?
ODO
I understand thieves and killers. I
don't understand... her.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 21.
18 CONTINUED: (2)
SISKO
I can't help you, Odo.
ODO
I'm just trying to avoid a diplomatic
incident. I don't want to insult
the Ambassador.
SISKO
A reasonable concern. I suggest you
handle the matter with great delicacy.
Odo frowns, realizing he's not going to get any assistance
from Sisko.
ODO
I don't handle "delicacy" very well.
And EXITS.
19 INT. OPS - CONTINUOUS (VPB)
Odo walks through and EXITS... O'Brien is looking over Anara's
shoulder...
ANARA
The probe appears to be made out of
some sort of corundium alloy...
COMPUTER VOICE
Analysis of all sub-processor modules
is complete...
O'Brien reacts, turns to another console to examine the
results...
O'BRIEN
Already... ? On screen.
(to Dax)
Lieutenant...
Dax comes over to O'Brien's station and looks at the screen
with him...
DAX
No science modules... no
communications system... and enough
computer capacity to run a galaxy
class starship. It's very odd.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT TWO 22.
O'BRIEN
That's an awful lot of computer
hardware to simply navigate a probe.
Kira comes over...
KIRA
Anything?
DAX
Nothing that suggests the probe's
mission.
As they react to the continuing mystery...
20 INT. PROMENADE
Bashir and his ambassadors moving toward the Infirmary.
BASHIR
It's no trouble at all... we can
clear that headache up in a second...
when was the last time you had a
complete checkup?
VADOSIA
Well, now that you mention it, I
probably could use a physical if you
could fit it into your schedule...
They're inside and...
21 ANGLE
to the Turbolift as the doors open and Odo comes out, looking
around cautiously for Mrs. Troi... deciding the coast is
clear, he comes out but a moment later, she appears...
LWAXANA
There you are, Odo.
He recoils, steps backwards a few steps... to the Turbolift,
hits the PADD buttons desperately, but it doesn't reopen...
LWAXANA
Have you ever been on the fourth
moon of Andevian Two at dawn?
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 23.
21 CONTINUED:
ODO
Can't say I have.
LWAXANA
I have the most wonderful holo-program
and I've reserved a suite for us
with that Quark person...
ODO
You told Quark you were going into a
holosuite with me?
LWAXANA
Of course. He's preparing a special
picnic basket for us.
ODO
Good lord.
The door finally opens...
ODO
I'm afraid I'm not available. I
have to get to upper pylon three
immediately.
He goes in... but before he can give the order... she slips
in beside him...
ODO
(protesting)
Madame ambassador...
LWAXANA
Lwaxana...
(to com)
Upper pylon three.
As the doors close...
LWAXANA
I've always wanted to see an upper
pylon.
Odo sighs...
22 INT. TURBOLIFT
as it begins to move... she smiles at him with a new idea...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 24.
22 CONTINUED:
LWAXANA
I know. I'll have Quark send one of
his minions with our basket... we'll
have our picnic up there...
ODO
Madame Ambassador...
LWAXANA
Lwaxana...
ODO
(no more patience)
I don't eat... this is not a real
mouth... it is an approximation of
one... I don't have an esophagus or
a stomach or a digestive system... I
am not like you... every sixteen
hours, I turn into a liquid.
LWAXANA
(shrugs)
I can swim.
He looks at her with exasperation... but before they
continue... the lights dim... and the Turbolift stops. They
react...
ODO
Computer... computer...
No response. He hits his combadge.
ODO
Odo to Ops!
23 INT. OPS (VPB)
Kira is on the move to engineering where Anara is looking at
readings...
KIRA
Go ahead, Odo.
ODO'S COM VOICE
Ambassador Troi and I are stuck in a
Turbolift... what's going on.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT TWO 25.

Power to all the pylon turbolifts
has failed...
KIRA
We're reading a turbolift failure,
Odo... we'll beam you out...
She looks to Dax...
DAX
(acknowledges)
Locking on... prepare to transport...
ODO'S COM VOICE
Ready.
Dax hits the panel...
DAX
Energizing.
They look at the pad... nothing... she tries again...
INTERCUTTING:
24 INT. TURBOLIFT

ODO
Well?
KIRA'S COM VOICE
Looks like the transporter's down

Sisko, Kira, O'Brien near engineering. Dax and Anara are

COMPUTER VOICE
(midstream)

normal. Diagnostic complete.
O'BRIEN
I don't get it. Every component of
the turbolift power net seems to be
operational.
Dax and Anara coming back --
DAX
We can't find anything wrong with
the transporter.
KIRA
Great. Everything's in working order
except nothing's working.
SISKO
How do we get our people out of the
turbolift, Chief?
O'BRIEN
If we were on a starship, I'd reroute
the E-P-S power flow in a couple of
hours... but with this computer,
there's no telling how long it will
take...
SISKO
Get it started...
O'Brien acknowledges... moves off.
KIRA
Kira to Odo...
ODO'S COM VOICE
Yes, Major.

KIRA'S COM VOICE
(continuing)
By the way, Cardassian turbolifts
run an exposed multi-phase alternating
current through their positioning
mechanisms, so don't try to shape-
shift your way out...
ODO
I wouldn't think of it.
LWAXANA
Besides it wouldn't be polite.
KIRA'S COM VOICE
I didn't hear that...
ODO
It wouldn't be polite.
KIRA'S COM VOICE
Understood. Kira out.
After a beat.
LWAXANA
Do you suppose that we're actually
in any danger?
ODO
Not if we remain calm.
LWAXANA
Then we might as well enjoy ourselves
and use the opportunity to get to
know one another.

Of course.
ODO
Thank you.

LWAXANA
(admiring)
The quiet man.
ODO
(a grunt)
Hmmm.
LWAXANA
I've always been attracted to quiet
men. Odd isn't it? But then, there
may be more truth than we realize to
the old axiom that opposites...
He gives her a sharp look.
LWAXANA
(reminded)
Quietly.
A beat. She sits down on the floor. Another beat of silence.
LWAXANA
Odo...
ODO

Can what?

He sighs again, sits, but as an officer and a gentlemen wants
to control the situation, is not rude.
ODO
I understand. There's nothing to be
afraid of.
LWAXANA
Of course not. It could be much
worse.
ODO
(dry)
Really.
LWAXANA
My daughter and I were once trapped
on a Ferengi cargo ship and it was
dreadful... well, all right, it wasn't
actually dreadful, it was mildly
lamentable. And it was all because
that loathsome Daimon... well,
actually he wasn't altogether
loathsome, he was slightly repulsive,
but he did have a certain charm, in
an insufferable sort of way. And of
course he was totally at the mercy
of his uncontrollable passion for
me. So he couldn't have been all
bad, could he? Well, it wasn't all
passion, there was some negligible
commercial interest involved, but
the passion was perfectly real, and
quite touching, in a way. He was so
helpless. At first it was totally a
question of expediency when I made
love with him...
She notices him looking down at a corner of the floor...
interrupts herself --

Think of it as an opportunity, Doctor.
You never know when a friendly
ambassador will be in the right place
at the right time to help your career.
BASHIR
Another hour with them could destroy
my career.
SISKO
It's a simple job. Just keep them
happy and away from me.
BASHIR
Simple? Nothing makes them happy.
They are dedicated to being unhappy
and to spreading that unhappiness
wherever they go... they are the
Ambassadors of Unhappy.
SISKO
We've all had assignments like this,
Doctor.
BASHIR
(impatient)
Have you, sir?
SISKO
As a matter of fact, Curzon Dax used
to take perverse pleasure in assigning
me to take care of VIP guests...
BASHIR
So, now, you take the same perverse
pleasure in doing it to me...

Hit one.

O'Brien calls to him from engineering...
O'BRIEN
Commander, can I talk to you...
Sisko comes over...
O'BRIEN
It's the computer, sir.
SISKO
Still giving you problems...
O'BRIEN
Nossir, that's just the thing. It's

You must have some idea what's
wrong...
O'BRIEN
(sighs, shrugs, doesn't

I want you to listen to something --
computer, analyze Ops O-2 sensor
readings...
COMPUTER VOICE
All sensors read between fourteen-
point-three and fourteen-point-four
K-S-C...
O'Brien looks to Sisko for a reaction... Sisko doesn't get
it... looks to O'Brien for an explanation.
O'BRIEN
(Okay, I'll try it
again)
Computer, restart all shield generator
subsystems...
COMPUTER VOICE
Shield generator subsystems set to
active status, reading ninety-eight
point three percent efficiency...
O'BRIEN
Do you hear it?
SISKO
Hear what?
O'BRIEN
The voice. It's not the same
attitude.
SISKO
It sounds like the computer.

O'BRIEN
Sir, when you work with a computer
as much as I do, you get to know
it... they're all very different...
working the Enterprise computer was
like dancing a waltz... with this
computer, it's always been more of a
wrestling match... until we started
downloading the probe...
SISKO
(reacts)
You think some kind of program from
the probe is influencing our
computer... ?
O'BRIEN
Well, it's got to be more than just
a program. The computer's whole...
personality has changed. She's
obedient, almost submissive... and
then there's this one other crazy
thing I'm almost afraid to mention...
SISKO
What's that?
O'BRIEN
Every time I leave, something happens
to bring me back...
SISKO
Bring you back?
O'BRIEN
To the computer. Like the failures
of the Turbolifts and the
transporters... or a few minutes
ago, when I was working over at the
transporter pad, the com lines went
down... and when I broke for a quick
bite to eat, we had a replicator
failure... it's like the computer
doesn't want me to leave it alone.

32 INT. OPS
At the conference table. Sisko, Kira, O'Brien, Dax. Sisko
listens intently. Picking up mid-meeting --
DAX
What if it's some kind of non-
biological lifeform we've never seen
before... ?
KIRA
Non-biological... ?
DAX
Well, it comes down to how we define
"lifeform"... but just as biological
organisms have evolved in our
cultures, mechanical life could have
done the same in others...
Dax acknowledges.
KIRA
You're suggesting someone's left a
baby on our doorstep.
DAX
(smiles)
Possibly.
SISKO
Do you think we could communicate
with it?
O'BRIEN
In a way, we already have... I mean,
it's part and parcel of our computer
now...
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/09/93 - ACT FOUR 37.
32 CONTINUED:
DAX
But as far as direct communication
is concerned, it may not be capable
of that. We haven't seen any evidence
that this entity is sentient...
KIRA
It may be more like a stray puppy
that's attached itself to you,
Chief...
Sisko has heard enough...
SISKO
Whatever it is, it's slowly disabling
our station, people... we've got to
get it out of there...
O'BRIEN
It came here when we downloaded the
probe's files. If we uploaded the
same files back to the probe, it
might go with them.
DAX
What if it's fully integrated itself
into our computer... ?
O'BRIEN
I don't think it has. That would
make it more like a virus... but I
don't see any evidence that it's
trying to overwrite our control
networks or destroy our systems. I
think it's more likely that it simply
creates connections with areas of
the computer that are active...
DAX
Almost as though it feeds off the
energy of the computer functions...
O'BRIEN
(acknowledges)
If I'm right, transferring all of
its programming off the station just
might solve our problems...

KIRA
Com lines have been down over ninety
minutes... he's been in there for
almost four hours now...
SISKO
You happen to know the schedule of
his regenerative cycle?
Kira reacts, realizing...
KIRA
My god... I have no idea... but if
he doesn't get back to his pail in
time...
Sisko acknowledges his concern...

thought, Commander.
34 INT. PROMENADE
Some emergency source lights are dotting on one by one but
it's mostly dark... finding Bashir and the three ambassadors
reacting to all this...
TAXCO
Is it just the lights or the heat
too... I didn't bring any warm
clothes...
BASHIR
I'm sure it's just temporary...
LOJAL
I've been reading the reports of
your Chief of Operations, Doctor...
They gave me the impression that he
was a competent engineer...
BASHIR
Chief O'Brien? One of the best in
Starfleet...
LOJAL
Then why aren't the backup systems
functioning?
BASHIR
Well, you know, out here on the edge

Hmmm?
LWAXANA
Enough about me. Tell me about

ODO
I'm really a private man.
LWAXANA
Of course you are. Is that hair
real?
ODO
It is real... in that it is me. It
is not real hair.
LWAXANA
How do you do it?
(off his look)
Your hair.
ODO
It took a great deal of practice.
LWAXANA
You studied hairstyles?
ODO
(sighs)
If you must know, I imitated the
hairstyle of the Bajoran man who
was assigned to me...
LWAXANA
Assigned?
ODO
To study me at the research center.
He was a scientist.

in a laboratory?

Sounds very lonely to me.
Odo makes eye contact... she's hit a nerve... she looks at
him sympathetically...
ODO
I was always very self-sufficient.
LWAXANA
I'm sure you had to be.
(off his reaction)
To survive. Being so different from
everyone else.
It's getting too intimate for Odo... he hits his combadge...
ODO
Odo to Ops... Odo to Ops...
(no response)
Com lines are still down... what's
taking so long?...
LWAXANA
Are you all right? You look warm.
And he does look a bit moist... he's nervous about it,
covers...
ODO
It's nothing. I'm fine.
A beat.

life of the party.
LWAXANA
I'm not sure I understand.
ODO
My way of trying to fit in. I found
I could be entertaining. Odo, be a
chair. I'm a chair. Odo, be a
razorcat. I'm a razorcat. Life of
the party. I hate parties.
LWAXANA
Maybe you've been going to the wrong
ones.
And he looks at her... and there's a connection.
LWAXANA
Come to one of mine, Odo. I'll see
to it that all the guests are there
to entertain you...
He almost smiles... but he is terribly uncomfortable now...
he has trouble holding his head erect...
LWAXANA
You're not well.
She moves to him. Lets him lean against her.
ODO
No, I'm fine. It's just... I told
you how I turn into a liquid every
sixteen hours? Well, I'm in hour
fifteen...
On her reaction...

36 INT. OPS
Emergency lighting is on now... Anara is in the engineering

O'BRIEN
We're ready, Commander...
SISKO
How long do you expect it to take?
O'BRIEN
If it works, we ought to be able to
get all of the probe's files manually
transferred to the six isolinear
rods in less than sixty seconds...
SISKO
Let's do it...
O'BRIEN
Computer, conduct a level one
diagnostic of all power systems on
board.
COMPUTER VOICE
Requested function will require forty-
three minutes. Stand by.
O'Brien immediately goes to work, signalling Anara who works
on a parallel console with a set of isolinear rods in a
computer drive... as the diversion dialogue continues, O'Brien
hits panels furiously and Anara puts in and takes out the
set of six rods... one by one...
SISKO
Computer, give me an analysis of all
Cardassian traffic along the border...

corridor H-12-A. Guest quarters.

SISKO
Phasers at maximum...
They both draw their phasers, stand back... fire together...
the door doesn't give. As security and medical personnel
arrive, Sisko and Kira examine --
46 ANGLE -- THE DOOR

KIRA
Toranium inlay... Cardassian design,
I should have guessed...
(to a deputy)
We're going to need a bipolar torch
to get through it...
SISKO
And get a message to Ops -- tell
them it's going to take us awhile to
get inside... if they can't get the
fire suppression systems on-line...
we're gonna lose our people in

DAX
I guess it just doesn't want to leave.
Like a scared puppy.
O'Brien studies the console, searching his mind for answers...
verbalizing the thinking process --
O'BRIEN
We have no idea how long that probe
was tumbling through space... maybe
years... with that lifeform alone on
board. It's sort of like shutting
the puppy up in a room, you know? I
had a pup once. If I had to lock
him up, he'd scratch forever at the
door, trying to get out...
DAX
I'm not sure I know what you're
getting at...

They like attention.

O'BRIEN

DAX
Okay, but how does that help us?
O'BRIEN
Everything we've seen suggests this
entity likes to be where the action
is... it seems to feed on the energy
of an active computer. We've been
trying to separate it from what it
thrives on... we've got to do the
exact opposite...
He starts to work the panels... Dax raises an eyebrow...
DAX
The exact opposite?
O'BRIEN
Lieutenant, I've got to build a
doghouse...
Off Dax's reaction...

That was different. It was only a
matter of research to him.
LWAXANA
You don't have to be ashamed with
me.
ODO
(lying)
I am not ashamed. It's a private
matter, that's all.
LWAXANA
How can I make it easier for you...
ODO
You can't. I'm fine.
49 ANGLE TO FAVOR ODO
and he looks pretty wretched... trying to hold onto his shape
as long as he can... we can't see Lwaxana in this shot...
but suddenly her hand holds out her wig for him to see... he
reacts...
ODO
What's that?
LWAXANA
My hair.
He does a take and turns to look at her... showing himself
to her in the process... and revealing to us the sight of
Mrs. Troi without a wig on for the first time... her hair is
pinned and informal... she looks decidedly unglamorous...

once in a while.
Beat, he studies her with appreciation through his discomfort.
ODO
You are not at all what I expected.
LWAXANA
No one's ever paid me a greater
compliment.
ODO
I cannot hold my shape any longer.
She smiles with compassion... lifts her skirt into an
improvised basin for him to dissolve into...
LWAXANA
(almost a whisper)
Let go. I'll take care of you.
50 ANGLE (OPTICAL)

We're going to need portable oxygen...
and get anything Bashir has in stock

security man)
Have a runabout ready to evacuate
these people to Bajor if we need
to...
He leaves...

ANARA
The subprogram is ready, Chief.
O'BRIEN
Computer, analyze subprogram labelled
"Pup"...
COMPUTER VOICE
Requested subprogram is a series of
bi-directional data transfer and
monitoring commands.
O'BRIEN
Re-route all main computer backup
functions through this subprogram.
COMPUTER VOICE
All backup functions re-routed.

O'BRIEN
Great. Okay, Computer, now, listen
carefully, I want to transfer all
probe command sequences out of core
memory and into the subprogram "pup."
COMPUTER VOICE
Stand by.
(beat)
Transfer complete.
And the lights come back on... reactions...
55 INT. CORRIDOR
Sisko has made a little more progress... but they react to
the lights coming on... Sisko has already stopped what he's
doing when we cut to him...
DAX'S COM VOICE
Dax to Sisko. Fire suppression is
responding. All systems are back on-
line. Can you get in?
Goes to the manual bulkhead control and opens the door...
SISKO
We're in, Dax. Stand by...
Revealing --
56 THE CORRIDOR - FIRE AREA
It's a shambles, charred black. The inside paneling has
melted and fallen away from the walls in twisted piles of
rubble. Nothing could have survived this holocaust. Sisko
and Kira step through the door. A pair of medics start to
pick up a stretcher. Sisko shakes his head. They put it
down. They won't be needing it.
DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT FIVE 54.
57 SISKO AND KIRA
... move through the charred debris. There's no hope.
KIRA
(hoarse)
We better... advise Starfleet Command.
As a reaction to the voice...
58 HATCH COVER
... from the wall, pops out onto the floor.
59 SISKO AND KIRA
... whirl, startled. Bashir's voice
(FROM INSIDE THE HOLE)
Here, let me give you a hand, Madame Ambassador...
As they move to help the ambassadors and Bashir out... who
are all covered with soot. The medical helpers move in to
assist...
TAXCO
Please, Julian. Call me Taxco.
SISKO
Are you all right?
VADOSIA
Thanks to Julian.
LOJAL
The doctor was remarkably calm and
logical for a man of his years under
such severe conditions.
VADOSIA
We'll be putting him in for a
commendation.
As Kira and the N.D. mech techs escort them away, leaving
Sisko and Bashir alone...

SISKO
Nice work, Doctor Bashir.
BASHIR
(shrugs, false modesty)
Right place at the right time.
He follows the others... on Sisko's reaction.
60 INT. PROMENADE
The door of the Turbolift opens, but it's a raking angle and
we can't see in. After a moment Odo steps out, a little
tentative. Then Mrs. Troi appears, looking fresh and cheerful
as ever. She's wearing her wig.
LWAXANA
It's about time.
Odo stands awkwardly for a moment, not knowing what to do.
ODO
I know that wasn't exactly what you
had in mind for your picnic.
LWAXANA
When it comes to picnics, the only
thing that really matters is the
company.
ODO
(beat)
Your discretion and sensitivity are
appreciated.
She smiles warmly...
LWAXANA
Next time you see me, I'll give you
a lot more to appreciate.
A last look between them... and as she moves off and he
watches her go a half smile slowly grows on his lips...
61 INT. OPS
Sisko returns on the Turbolift... moves to congratulate
O'Brien...

SISKO
How'd you beat that thing in the
computer, Chief?
O'BRIEN
I didn't.
DAX
He adopted it.
SISKO
Adopted it?
O'BRIEN
I was able to get our friend out of
the main command pathways and into a
subprogram.
SISKO
You're not suggesting we leave it in
there.
O'BRIEN
I don't see why not. It's happy.
Not bothering us any more. Seems to
be the humane thing to do.
Sisko glances at Dax who shrugs, she has no problem with it.
DAX
It's just another new lifeform
visiting the station.
O'BRIEN
I'll look after it, sir... make sure
it's getting enough attention and
all...
Sisko raises an eyebrow...
SISKO
Keep it off the furniture.
And moves to his office.
O'BRIEN
Yessir.
He exchanges a smile with Dax and...
