1 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)

					SISKO
			Station Log. Stardate 46925.1. We
have been honored with a visit by a
			delegation of Federation ambassadors
on a "fact-finding" mission to the
			wormhole. Fortunately I have just
the officer to take them off my hands.

2 INT. QUARK'S

BASHIR is with a Vulcan male, (LOJAL)... a Bolian male,
(VADOSIA)... and an Arbazan woman (TAXCO). They are all
middle-aged, intimidating and in a bad mood. Bashir is
uncomfortable and defensive in his attempt to be charming.

					BASHIR
I wish there was something I could
			do, Ambassador but...

					TAXCO
			Madame ambassador...

					BASHIR
			Madame ambassador... unfortunately,
all the guest quarters on the station
			are roughly the same size...

					TAXCO
Then move me to the crew level.

					BASHIR
All the quarters on the crew level
			are currently occupied...

            DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 2.

2 CONTINUED:

					TAXCO
Then someone can move... you, for
			example...

					VADOSIA
She did the same thing during the
			voyage here. She's never satisfied...

					TAXCO
At least I didn't bother the Captain
every hour with some new suggestion
on how to run his ship...

					VADOSIA
He welcomed my suggestions... as I'm
sure your Commander Sisko will welcome
			them...
				(beat, making a point)
... if we ever get to spend any time
			with him.

					BASHIR
			Commander Sisko is extremely busy...

					VADOSIA
			With what?

					BASHIR
			With...
				(searching)
			... the recalibration sweep.

					LOJAL
				(interest piqued)
			What are you recalibrating?

					BASHIR
			...Everything. It's a... sweeping...
			recalibration of all systems...

					LOJAL
I cannot speak for the others, but I
would be fascinated to observe this
			recalibration, Doctor.

					BASHIR
You... would? After your long trip,
I was thinking perhaps you all might
enjoy stopping by a holosuite... ?

            DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 3.

2 CONTINUED:	(2)

	Quick and overlapping dialogue:

					TAXCO
				(aghast)
Are you actually suggesting we indulge
in one of those disgusting Ferengi
			sex programs?

					BASHIR
				(quick)
No... I... the holosuites are capable
			of creating many different...

					VADOSIA
				(likes the idea)
Of course that was what he was
			suggesting.
				(to Bashir)
			The Arbazan are so sexually
			repressed...

					TAXCO
			This is outrageous.

					BASHIR
Perhaps we should... all... just get
			some rest then...

					LOJAL
I did not come all this way to rest,
Doctor. I would like to see your
			facility.

					TAXCO
A first-year officer assigned as our
			liaison. Starfleet command will
			hear of this...

					BASHIR
			Ambassador... Madame ambassador, I'm
			only...

They are interrupted by a woman's scream... as they turn to
	see what it is --

3 ANGLE - LWAXANA TROI

at a dabo table, surrounded by other Players... including
one small, weasely looking Dopterian who looks like a distant
cousin to a Ferengi... who casually stands back and moves
away as she pats her hands over her wig...

            DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 4.

3 CONTINUED:

					LWAXANA
			It's gone! It's gone!

Bashir rolls his eyes, now what... moves to her...

					BASHIR
			What's gone, Madame Ambassador?

					LWAXANA
			My latinum hairbrooch.

					BASHIR
				(calling for)
			Quark!

					LWAXANA
I'd just made a third straight cross
and I leaned over the table to pick
up the dice again and I felt someone
brush against me... my God, I've
			been wigged...

QUARK moves quickly into the fray...

					QUARK
			What's the problem here?

					BASHIR
			Someone has stolen Ambassador Troi's
			latinum hairbrooch.

					QUARK
I'm sorry but as the sign says...
			the establishment is not responsible
for the loss of any personal items...

					LWAXANA
			Sign? What sign?

					QUARK
			The one above the door.

Bashir squints in the direction of the door...

					BASHIR
You'd have to stand on the bar to
			read it...

					QUARK
Rules of the house. I'm very sorry.
			Have a nice day.

            DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 5.

3 CONTINUED:	(2)

She grabs him by the ear and pulls him, grimacing with
	pain, to his full height.

					LWAXANA
You're dealing with the daughter of
the fifth house, keeper of the chalice
of Rixx, heir to the holy rings of
			Betazed...

					QUARK
			Aah! Not my ear, please...

					LWAXANA
Yes, I know where it hurts the most,
you little troll. Now, I want this
			room sealed and everyone strip-
			searched until my brooch...

					ODO (O.S.)
			May I be of service?

4 ANGLE

as they turn to ODO's arrival... she lets Quark go.

					BASHIR
			Yes, thank goodness.
				(to Lwaxana)
			Our security chief, Odo.

					ODO
What seems to be the problem?

					LWAXANA
My hairbrooch has been stolen, it's
been in my family for thirty-six
			generations, it's absolutely
priceless, and I want it back.

Odo gives Mrs. Troi a piercing look.

					ODO
You're certain you were wearing it
			today.

					LWAXANA
Of course, I'm certain. I never use
			this hair without it.

            DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - TEASER 6.

4 CONTINUED:

					ODO
			I see.
				(beat)
			You're Betazoid?

					LWAXANA
			Of course.

					ODO
			Telepathic.

					LWAXANA
			Yes.

					ODO
And you sense no guilt anywhere in
			this room?

A beat as she checks... eventually turns back to Quark --

					LWAXANA
				(suspicious)
			No, but Betazoids can't read...
			Ferengis...

					ODO
Quark has plenty of reasons to feel
guilty, but he usually doesn't have
to resort to petty theft to fleece
			his clients.

					QUARK
				(honor restored)
			Thank you.

Odo moves away, scanning the room with his piercing gaze.
	His eye falls on...

5 ANGLE - THE DOPTERIAN

making a point of being inconspicuous. But when he realizes
that Odo's focused on him... he starts to move quickly toward
the door... as Odo moves to intercept, he moves faster
still... but can't get by him... Odo grabs him by the arm
	hard and snaps him back...

					ODO
			Empty your pockets.

The Dopterian hesitates... looks around for some escape...

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - TEASER 7.

5 CONTINUED:

					ODO
			Now!

The Dopterian chagrined, empties his pockets... and as he
puts things on the table... we see a variety of stolen
	objects... a Starfleet combadge...

					ODO
Since when did you join Starfleet?

And more... a necklace... a Bajoran earring...

					VOICE (O.S.)
			Hey, that's my earring...

	And finally a hairbrooch...

					LWAXANA
			That's it... that's my brooch.

She takes it... Odo nods pleasantly --

					LWAXANA
			But how did you know?

					ODO
			Dopterians are distant relatives of
the Ferengi... it made sense that if
you couldn't read Quark, you might
not be able to read this charming
			fellow either.

					LWAXANA
			How perfectly brilliant of you.

Odo nods, pushes the Dopterian toward the door and as he
EXITS with his prisoner, Lwaxana trains her eyes on him...
and before he can escape, takes Bashir intimately by the
arm, still watching Odo's departure with designs...

					LWAXANA
Doctor, I want to know everything
there is to know about your security
			chief...

	Off Bashir's reaction...

									FADE OUT.

6 INT. OPS (VPB)

KIRA at her station. DAX at hers. O'BRIEN is working in
his area with a young, attractive Bajoran female apprentice,
ANARA... They're working different panels, O'Brien already
	frustrated with the computer...

					O'BRIEN
Computer, is the diagnostic on the
			fusion powerplant finished yet?

					COMPUTER VOICE
			Affirmative. The fusion powerplant
			is operating within normal
			parameters...

					O'BRIEN
			What are you talking about...
				(off sensors)
			It's thirteen percent below normal.

					COMPUTER VOICE
			Cardassian specifications accept
			operating efficiency within twenty
			percent.

					O'BRIEN
			Well, I don't.
				(beat)
			Anara...

	She comes over...

					ANARA
			Yessir.

					O'BRIEN
				(tutorial)
How much do you know about the carbon
			reaction chambers... ?

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 9.

6 CONTINUED:

					ANARA
I've learned a little about laser-
induced fusion... not much more than
			the basics...

					O'BRIEN
It's a bloody inefficient system and
if I could, I'd trade it in for a
			Federation model tomorrow. But it's
all we've got. Do me a favor and
just keep an eye on the exhaust plasma
			temperature...

She acknowledges, goes to a console...

					O'BRIEN
			Computer, increase deuterium flow by
			five percent to reaction chamber
			two...

					COMPUTER VOICE
			Procedure is not recommended.

					O'BRIEN
Listen, I've had enough of your
			opinions, computer, just do it.

					COMPUTER VOICE
			Procedure is not recommended. Consult
			Cardassian operational guidelines,
			paragraph two-fifty-four-A, now on
			screen.

O'Brien blinks as he looks at a page of a tech manual that
	appears on a monitor...

					O'BRIEN
I don't want to read your tech manual,
dammit. Fine. We'll do it ourselves.

Hits some switches... to Anara --

					O'BRIEN
			Re-initializing reactor two...
			directing plasma stream to conduits
			one forty-three... one-forty-four...
			and one forty --

					ANARA
				(interrupting)

			Chief O'Brien...
				(looking at her console)
The power flow from reactor two
			has just been shut down...

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 10.

6 CONTINUED:	(2)

					O'BRIEN
			What? Computer, analyze reactor two
			failure...

SISKO exits his office, moving past O'Brien, pauses to react
	as --

					COMPUTER VOICE
Reactor two was shut down after
			sensors detected a potential overload
			of the carbon reaction chambers.

O'Brien hangs his head in frustration...

					O'BRIEN
			That's it. That's the straw.

					SISKO
Relax, Chief. It's just a computer.

					O'BRIEN
She's no computer, sir. She's my
			arch enemy.

					SISKO
You've got it working just fine, as
			far as I can tell.

					O'BRIEN
			Fine? Commander, with all due
respect, as an engineer, I couldn't
look at myself in the mirror if I
let this computer continue to perform
as it does now. I really need to do
			a root canal.

					SISKO
			Root canal?

					O'BRIEN
			Engineering shorthand, sir. I'm
gonna have to get into her guts and
rebuild her from the ground up.

					SISKO
			How long will that take?

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 11.

6 CONTINUED:	(3)

					O'BRIEN
Well, I'm still not all that familiar
			with Cardassian technology... but
I'd guess no more than... oh, two,
			three years.

					SISKO
				(reacts)
That's going to take a lot of man-
			hours. Is it really necessary?

					O'BRIEN
				(frustrated)
			You don't understand...

					SISKO
			Let's just say I don't have your
			sensitivity to the computer.

					O'BRIEN
				(offended)
That's all right. It doesn't matter.

					SISKO
			Chief...

					O'BRIEN
			Forget it. It's all right.

					SISKO
Chief, I want you to do what you
			have to do.

In the background, Bashir and the three ambassadors arrive
	on the Turbolift...

					O'BRIEN
				(pleased)
Yessir. Thank you, sir. I'll get
			on it right away.

Sisko turns away only to be confronted by the ambassadors...
	he covers an unhappy reaction...

					BASHIR
			And this is... Ops...

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 12.

6 CONTINUED:	(4)

					VADOSIA
The heart and soul of Deep Space
Nine. Ah, there you are, Commander...

					SISKO
				(cordial)
			Gentlemen, Madame Ambassador...

He throws a subtle annoyed glance at Bashir for letting them
	up here...

					BASHIR
			They insisted on seeing Operations,
			sir...

The Vulcan moves into O'Brien's area and looks over his
	shoulder annoyingly...

					SISKO
Of course. Please make yourself at
home. I trust Doctor Bashir is taking
			care of all your needs.

					TAXCO
			He refuses to change my
accommodations... if I have to sleep
another night on a Cardassian bed...
with those gargoyles staring at me
			from the woodpoles...

					KIRA
			Commander, unidentified vessel coming
			through the wormhole...

Sisko moves away from the group...

					SISKO
				(to them)
			Excuse me.
				(to Kira)
			On screen.

Bashir goes to take the Vulcan out of O'Brien's way...

					BASHIR
You'll have a better view from over
			here, Ambassador...

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - 3/04/93 - ACT ONE 13.

7 ANGLE (OPTICAL)

to include the viewscreen showing the wormhole opening and a
small cylinder come through... Bashir plays host to the
junket, trying to keep them out of the way...

					BASHIR
			Quite a sight, isn't it?

	The wormhole flashes off...

8 ON THE AMBASSADORS

					VADOSIA
That's it? That's the whole thing?

					BASHIR
			Well, yes, it's...

					VADOSIA
			I was expecting... more... somehow.

9 RESUME WIDE (OPTICAL)

	with the vessel on Viewscreen.

					DAX
			Scanners aren't picking up any
			lifeforms on board.

					SISKO
			A probe?

					DAX
			Might be.
				(checking)
			I'm reading an extensive computer
array... but no signals that would
			suggest it's trying to maintain
			contact with a mother ship...

					SISKO
			Are the computers compatible with
			ours... ?

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT ONE 14.

9 CONTINUED:

					DAX
Hard to tell. I don't recognize any
			known subprocessor patterns.

10 ANGLE - THE AMBASSADORS

The Vulcan desperately wants to get in on the action.

					LOJAL
				(to Bashir)
			The young woman obviously doesn't
			have the necessary experience...
			perhaps if I...

					BASHIR
				(pulling him back)
That young woman has over three
			hundred years of experience,
			Ambassador...

11 RESUME

	Oblivious to all that --

					DAX
I might have better luck if we towed
			it into the docking ring...

					SISKO
			No.
				(beat, thoughtful)
Not until we know a little more about
it. Major, tow it to five hundred
			meters off the docking ring...

					KIRA
			Yessir.

					SISKO
Mister O'Brien, try to set up an
adaptive interface link and see if
we can download any information from
			it.

					O'BRIEN
			Aye, sir.

12 ANGLE

12 CONTINUED:

					BASHIR
I think it would be best if we clear

					VADOSIA
But this probe may represent contact
			with a new species...
				(moving forward)

Commander, I think it would be
			appropriate for at least one
			Federation ambassador to be present
			at this historic occasion... and
since I have a particular interest
			in first contact procedures...

					SISKO
				(deft)
			I appreciate your interest,
Ambassador. And to keep you all
			fully informed, I'm scheduling a
briefing at oh-four hundred. In the
			meantime, Doctor Bashir, the best

					BASHIR
			I'll show them the way.

Sisko nods and turns away and moves to Dax to look as busy

13 INT. SECURITY OFFICE

Odo is bent over his console, completely engrossed in his

14 LWAXANA

... watching admiringly from the doorway. She is dressed to
	kill, wears a wig.

					LWAXANA
			Such concentration. Such intensity.
Such a passion for your work...

15 ODO

... looks up as she ENTERS.

					ODO
Most people find it rather tedious.

					LWAXANA
Tedious? Those of us who have been
			the beneficiaries of your heroism
would never call your work tedious.
We've learned that on this station,
you are the thin beige line between
			order and chaos...

					ODO
				(serious)
			That's my job.

	He rises.

					ODO
Now, what can I do for you... you
haven't lost anything else, I hope.

					LWAXANA
			Only my heart.

					ODO
			I beg your pardon?

					LWAXANA
Is Odo your first or last name?

					ODO
			Yes.

					LWAXANA
Ah, then I can just call you...

					ODO
			Odo.

She's much too close to him for comfort. He moves to another
part of the console. She follows and continues to stalk
	him.

					LWAXANA
It has a certain lyrical quality.

					ODO
			Lyrical?

Her mouth so very close to his.

					ODO
I have a lot of work to do.

					LWAXANA
			I'm told you're a shape-shifter.

					ODO
			That's correct.

					LWAXANA
			I've never been with a shape-shifter.

					ODO
			"Been with... "?

					LWAXANA
I've heard you're the only one of
			your kind.

					ODO
			So far.

					LWAXANA
All the men I've known... who've
needed to be shaped and molded and
			manipulated. Finally, I've met a

A beat as they look into each other's eyes -- hers with lust --

					ODO
Was that the com... ? I think it

And he races out... as she watches him go, she smiles and...

There you go... who woulda thought...

			You seem surprised, Chief...

					O'BRIEN
Yeah, well, knowing this computer, I

Odo arrives on the Turbolift, moves across Ops to the

	Odo ENTERS...

					SISKO
			Yes, Odo...

					ODO
			Commander, I have a problem.

					SISKO
			Quark again... ?

					ODO
			Nossir, this one's named Lwaxana.

					SISKO
			Lwaxana Troi... the ambassador... ?

					ODO
That's her. There was a minor
incident at the bar that I helped

			grateful.

					SISKO
			What's the problem?

					ODO
The manner in which she expresses

	Sisko reacts curiously.

					ODO
				(continuing)
To be honest, Commander, she seems
			interested in me.

					SISKO
			What's wrong with that?

					ODO
			She's extremely aggressive.

					SISKO
I see. So, she's after you.

					ODO

					ODO
			Sir?

					SISKO
			A little romance, Odo.

					ODO
I have six pylons that need a complete
security sweep... I don't have time
			for romantic interludes... frankly,
in my humble opinion, most of you
humanoids spend far too much time on
			your respective mating rituals...

					SISKO
It does help the procreation of one's
			species...

					ODO
			Procreation does not require changing
how you smell or writing bad poetry
			or sacrificing various plants to
serve as tokens of affection... In
any event, it is all irrelevant to
			me.

					SISKO
			I'm sorry to hear that.

					ODO
I would appreciate it if you would
			do something about this woman.

					SISKO
			Me?

					ODO
Just tell her to leave me alone.

					SISKO
			Constable, you can handle thieves
and killers but not one Betazoid

					ODO
I understand thieves and killers. I
			don't understand... her.

			I can't help you, Odo.

					ODO
I'm just trying to avoid a diplomatic

					SISKO
A reasonable concern. I suggest you
handle the matter with great delicacy.

Odo frowns, realizing he's not going to get any assistance

					ODO
I don't handle "delicacy" very well.

	And EXITS.

					O'BRIEN
			Already... ? On screen.

			Lieutenant...

Dax comes over to O'Brien's station and looks at the screen

					DAX
			No science modules... no

DEEP SPACE: "The Forsaken" - REV. 3/08/93 - ACT TWO 22.

					O'BRIEN
That's an awful lot of computer

	Kira comes over...

					KIRA
			Anything?

					DAX
			Nothing that suggests the probe's

As they react to the continuing mystery...

Well, now that you mention it, I

	They're inside and...

21 ANGLE

					LWAXANA
			There you are, Odo.

He recoils, steps backwards a few steps... to the Turbolift,

					O'BRIEN
It came here when we downloaded the

					DAX
What if it's fully integrated itself

					O'BRIEN
I don't think it has. That would

don't see any evidence that it's
			trying to overwrite our control

Okay, but how does that help us?

					O'BRIEN
			Everything we've seen suggests this
