DIAGNOSIS MURDER
"Retribution - Part Two"
Written by Lee Goldberg

RECAP of Part One. Steve Sloan is gunned down. Summer Phillips
and Gordon Ganza are killed - and Chief Masters arrests Mark
Sloan for the murders, which have sparked a mob war. Mark is
found guilty of murder and sent to prison - where Malcolm
Trainor is waiting for him.
ACT FIVE
FADE IN:
1 EXT. PRISON - ESTABLISHING - DAY 1
Superimpose: FOUR MONTHS LATER.
2 INT. PRISON - VISITING AREA - DAY 2
DR. MARK SLOAN sits at a stainless steel table in a stainless
steel chair, separated from STEVE SLOAN by a THICK PANE of
glass. Steve is recovering from his wounds... but he still
doesn't look good.
MARK
Chief Masters is right -- it's too
soon for you to be back on active
duty.
STEVE
I can breathe and I can walk.
That's all that's necessary.
MARK
Steve, you nearly died. You've
only been out of the hospital two
weeks. You have to rest.
STEVE
Not until you're out of here.
MARK
I'd rather die here than lose you.
Don't risk your life for me.
STEVE
It's not just about you -- though
that's enough. I can't let Malcolm
Trainor get away with this.
Steve glances down the room at MALCOLM TRAINOR, who is meeting
with his younger brother, IAN TRAINOR, 40s. Like Malcolm, Ian
is impeccable and utterly at ease.

MARK
I'm not certain Trainor is
responsible. But he is
brilliant - and I am the one who
put him here.
STEVE
You'd have to be brilliant to
engineer such an elaborate set-up.
MARK
And have help on the outside. His
brother Ian is as smart as he is.
STEVE
He's is also the accountant for
the Ganza crime family.
(then)
What's left of it, anyway. Ganza's
underbosses are all killing each
other for control of his
operation. Eddie Tampa and Ross
Canin are the only ones still
alive.
MARK
Somehow this mob war and my frame
are connected - I just wish I
could figure out how.
(then)
The key to all this is Carlotta
Mendoza. She gave a remarkable
performance - someone scripted it,
and she knows who.
STEVE
Immigration says she skipped to
Guatemala right after the trial.
MARK
Someone wanted her out of reach.
Do we know anyone down there who
can help us?
STEVE
Amanda just got back.
Mark is stunned. Steve answers his unasked question.
STEVE
She had some vacation time coming.
None of us are giving up on you,
Dad.

STEVE (cont'd)
(then)
Amanda got led on a scenic tour of
South America. Carlotta's with
Cousin Matec, who says she's with
Aunt Emilia, who says she's at her
sister Elena's, who says she's at
her friend Eduardo's, who says...
Mark gets the picture.
MARK
Why would Carlotta disappear in
her own country? What is she
hiding from?
STEVE
Us.
MARK
What if she never went there...
what if we're being purposely led
in the wrong direction?
A GUARD comes up behind Steve, taps him on the shoulder. Steve
nods.
STEVE
If she's here, we'll find her.
MARK
Be careful, Steve. Whoever shot
you is still out there. Don't give
him a second chance to get it
right.
Steve is escorted out... and Mark can't help but notice his
son is leaning heavily on a CANE, weak on his feet. The guards
hustle Mark and the other prisoners to the door. Malcolm comes
up beside Mark.
MALCOLM
My brother Ian had the most
remarkable news. The state Supreme
Court has agreed to hear my
appeal. It seems the main witness
against me turned out to be a
homicidal psychopath.
(smiles)
Imagine that.
And on Mark's frustration, and Malcolm's amusement, we CUT TO:
"Retribution - Part Two" 4.
3 EXT. STREET - DAY 3
It's the next day. TANIS ARCHER is sitting in a car, watching
Ganza's house, when she hears something. In one fluid
movement, she WHIPS OUT HER GUN and SPINS to aim it at the
passenger door... at Steve, standing on the curb, his hand
still on the door latch.
STEVE
Good morning to you, too.
Archer relaxes, glaring at Steve as she holsters her gun.
ARCHER
You know better than to sneak up
on a surveillance unit.
STEVE
I didn't sneak, I hobbled.
Steve slides into the car and stows his cane on the floor.
ARCHER
You're supposed to be on medical
leave.
STEVE
Does that mean I can't visit my
friends?
ARCHER
Not when your friends are watching
two suspects in your shooting.
(then)
Besides, I'm not your friend any
more.
STEVE
You're not?
ARCHER
I put your father in prison. You
hate me. And if you don't, you
should.
STEVE
You were just doing your job,
following the evidence where it
led you.
(then)
You weren't wrong. The evidence
was.
Archer turns back to him.

ARCHER
Stop right now, Steve -- you want
to retry the case, do it in a
courtroom, not my car.
STEVE
How many murders has my father
solved? Do you really think he'd
kill Ganza with a binary poison -
and then leave a signed receipt
for the stuff lying around?
ARCHER
Your father thought you were going
to die. He wanted revenge. Rage
makes you stupid.
STEVE
No matter how angry you were,
would you ever leave behind a
murder weapon covered with your
prints?
ARCHER
We caught him at the scene. He
didn't have a chance to lose the
screw driver.
STEVE
Immediately after the trial,
Carlotta Mendoza, the major
witness against him disappears.
You don't find that strange?
She glances out the window.
4 HER POV - GANZA'S HOUSE 4
Ross Canin and Eddie Tampa emerge and stride toward their car.
ARCHER (V.O.)
The case is closed.
STEVE (V.O.)
You know who has the cell across
from my father?
5 BACK TO SCENE 5
Archer watches them, Steve continues to make his case.

STEVE
A murderer my father caught. A
murderer who killed his wife with
a binary poison.
(then)
Malcolm Trainor.
That gets her attention. In a big way.
STEVE
That's right, brother of Ganza
family accountant Ian Trainor.
What an amusing coincidence.
Archer looks away again, just in time to see:
6 HER POV - A CAR 6
Rounding the corner, A MAN with a SERPENT TATTOO around his
neck leans out, firing an AUTOMATIC WEAPON out the window.
What happens next happens VERY FAST.
7 THE STREET - WIDE ANGLE 7
Ross Canin and Eddie Tampa dive behind a their CAR as it's
RAKED WITH GUNFIRE.
8 ARCHER 8
jumps out and FIRES at the speeding car as it goes, her slugs
SHATTERING the rear window, a SIDE-VIEW MIRROR, and the TRUNK.
The gunman returns fire, hitting her car and the street around
her. She runs after the car, continuing to fire as it fish-
tails around the corner and disappears.
9 STEVE 9
hobbles across the street to the fallen mob bosses, to find
Canin leaning over Tampa's bullet-riddled body. Canin looks up
at him with undisguised loathing.
10 ARCHER 10
goes back to the car, the tires are blown. No way she can
give chase. She holsters her gun and marches up to Steve.
ARCHER
Anyone hurt?
STEVE
Just Eddie. He's dead.

CANIN
You just sat there and watched
while they smoked us.
ARCHER
We didn't want to get in your way.
Enraged, Ross Canin springs at Archer, but Steve trips him
with his cane, sending him sprawling face-down on the
pavement. Archer crouches next to him.
ARCHER
The last person standing between
you and control of the Ganza
family operation is dead. Isn't
that exactly what you wanted?
She rises and walks away.
ARCHER
(to Steve)
I'll call this in.
Canin starts to get up, but Steve slams his foot down on his
back, forcing him into the pavement.
STEVE
I find out you had anything to do
with what happened to my Dad,
you'll wish you were Eddie.
Steve leaves. And on Canin's rage, we CUT TO:
11 INT. PRISON - COMMON AREA - DAY 11
Mark is pacing near one wall, separate from the handful of
other death row prisoners in the large, sterile common room.
A TV SET, entirely covered with CHICKEN WIRE, hangs in a
corner. GUARDS stand at the fringes of the room, keeping a
watchful eye. Malcolm Trainor approaches Mark.
MALCOLM
Death Row is like being in the
first class section of a plane. We
are the elite. We get all sorts of
special attention.
Mark has no where else to go. He just keeps walking.
MALCOLM
We have our own cell block, our
own guards, our own cafeteria,
even our own common room. No
overcrowding here, no need to
mingle with the riff-raff.

Mark ignores him. Malcolm motions to a man in the corner.
MALCOLM
Stanley chopped hitch-hikers into
pieces and kept their heads in his
freezer.
MALCOLM
But he's a wonderful bridge
partner. Not bad at backgammon,
either.
(off Mark's look)
Oh, that's right.
Malcolm lowers his voice to a whisper to say.
MALCOLM
They're not like us. They're
murderers.
(then)
We were framed.
MARK
Your wife loved you. You rewarded
that trust and devotion by
poisoning her.
MALCOLM
Technically, she poisoned herself.
MARK
You put glyburide in her breakfast
so when she took her insulin shot
later, she'd lapse into a diabetic
coma. Two drugs interacting with
each other to cause death: a
binary poison.
MALCOLM
Or an unfortunate accident.
Happens every day. Like the poor,
unfortunate dishwasher who mixes
ammonia and Ajax -- and dies from
the chlorine gas.
(then)
But if you twist the facts just
enough... give it a fancy name
like "binary poison..." and
suddenly bad luck looks like
premeditated murder.
(CONTINUED)
"Retribution - Part Two" 9.
11 CONTINUED: (2) 11
MARK
Your wife discovered you and your
brother turned her family's
century-old accounting firm into
a front for laundering mob money.
That's why she died.
Malcolm just waves the accusation off.
MALCOLM
If you weren't so obsessed with
"binary poisons," both of us might
be chatting in a park somewhere,
under a brilliant blue sky,
instead of standing here, basking
in the glow of fluorescent light.
Mark stops and studies Malcolm.
MARK
So this is the moment Summer
Phillips and Gordon Ganza died
for. Getting me here for this
conversation... and the others to
come.
MALCOLM
Seems like an awful lot of trouble
to go through just for a few
chats, don't you think?
(then)
Steve looked fit today. It must be
a relief that he's healed so well
on his own... especially since
there's nothing you can do for him
anymore.
Mark's blood runs cold.
MARK
I'm here. You have me. Leave my
son alone.
MALCOLM
You never know who he might see
today, and who might be sitting on
a bomb. I just hope he doesn't get
too close. Even if he survives,
burns get infected so easily--
Mark grabs Malcolm and slams him against the wall.
MARK
What's going to happen to my son?
Tell me!

MALCOLM
It's a shame they don't let us
have phones in here.
Malcolm takes out a SHIV and slashes himself across the chest
with it. Before Mark can react, Malcolm SCREAMS, dropping the
shiv on the ground.
MALCOLM
Don't kill me! Please!
Mark releases Malcolm and turns to face the guards as they
rush him. They grab Mark and pull him several feet away from
Malcolm. GUARD #1 rushes up to Malcolm, who writhes on the
floor, clutching his bloody chest. Guard #1 spots the shiv,
then glares up at Mark.
GUARD #1
Take him to his cell.
MARK
Wait. I didn't --
The guards start to drag him away. Mark tries to wrestle free.
MARK
No! My son! I've got to warn him!
And on Mark being dragged away, we CUT TO:
12 INT. POLICE HQ - CORRIDOR - DAY 12
Archer catches up with Masters as he is on his way to his
office.
ARCHER
It's been over an hour since I
gave you my report on Eddie
Tampa's death.
MASTERS
Yes, thank you. It's been
forwarded to Detective Peake at
CRASH.
ARCHER
You sent my report to the street
gang unit? These are high-level
members of an organized crime
family.

Archer stares at him, dumbfounded.
ARCHER
Sir, I caught a glimpse of the
shooter and --
MASTERS
CRASH will be happy to take your
description. Expect a call.
ARCHER
What about Tony Velardi? Was his
murder gang related?
MASTERS
You'd have to ask Detective
Mitchell in the Tarzana station --
that's his case.
ARCHER
Ganza's underbosses are fighting
each other for control of his
empire. It's a mob war. You can't
just ignore it.
Masters doesn't answer. Apparently, he can.
ARCHER
Whoever killed Ganza wanted this
war - by letting it continue we're
helping him.
They reach his office. Masters looks at her. It's not a look
you'd want leveled at you.
MASTERS
Gordon Ganza was murdered by Dr.
Mark Sloan. You convinced me of
that.
ARCHER
What if Dr. Sloan is innocent?
MASTERS
Well, then, I suppose that would
mean you were wrong.
ARCHER
(tightly)
Yes, sir, it would.

MASTERS
Do better next time.
ARCHER
We may have put an innocent man on
death row - and that's all you can
say?
Masters regards Archer coolly.
MASTERS
You are dismissed.
She meets his gaze for a long moment, then:
ARCHER
You want to let the mob kill each
other off, that's fine. But what
happens when innocent people get
caught in the cross-fire?
MASTERS
See to it that they don't.
Dismissed.
And with that, he goes into his office. Archer, furious,
stalks out. CUT TO:
13 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL HOSPITAL - EXAM ROOM - DAY 13
Steve shrugs his shirt back on as Jesse makes a notation in
his chart.
JESSE
I've got to say, it's amazing how
fast you're recovering.
STEVE
Then you'll certify my return to
active duty?
JESSE
I said amazing, not miraculous.
STEVE
Jesse, my dad is on death row.
JESSE
I know. But collapsing on the job
because you're not fully healed
won't help him any.
That's when Steve sees Archer marching into pathology.
"Retribution - Part Two" 13.
14 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL - PATHOLOGY - DAY 14
Archer approaches Amanda.
ARCHER
You got something for me?
AMANDA
Eddie Tampa was shot four times,
once in the chest, once in the
head, once in the ankle and-
ARCHER
(interrupting)
I don't have a medical degree,
doctor, but I knew the cause of
death before you picked up his
body. Is there anything else?
AMANDA
Whoever killed him also shot Mitch
Stein, Frankie Caprice, and-
Amanda looks over Archer's shoulder.
AMANDA
You.
Archer turns to see Steve and Jesse in the doorway behind her.
ARCHER
One shooter. A lot of dead under-
bosses.
STEVE
Which means the guy who shot me
for Gordon Ganza has a new
employer.
ARCHER
Or the shooter is still working
for the same guy -- and Ganza
never ordered your hit.
JESSE
Interesting theory - but how do
you prove it?
ARCHER
I know where to start.
Archer marches out. Steve looks after her.

How about with Carlotta Mendoza?
I went back again to the INS and
look what I found.
She takes a piece of paper out of her pocket and hands it to
Steve.
STEVE
Someone filed a renewal
application for Carlotta Mendoza's
green card?
AMANDA
Not someone, Carlotta herself. And
she did it less than a month ago.
STEVE
Which means Dad was right --her
flight to Guatemala was a fraud,
deliberately set up to throw us
off her trail.
JESSE
And the trail of whoever hired her.
Steve studies the paper again.
STEVE
There's one great thing about
bureaucracies -- they demand all
sorts of information before
they'll help you. Like they need
your last three addresses before
they'll even process your green
card application.
AMANDA
What an amazing coincidence -- all
three of those addresses are on my
way home.
JESSE
Mine, too.
STEVE
Call me as soon as you find her.
AMANDA
Where are you going to be?
STEVE
I don't know how this mob war and
my father's frame are connected --
but there is one man who does.

15 INT. PRISON - DAY 15
GUARD #1 strolls indifferently down the corridor, stopping to
examine a scuff on his shoe, ignoring the sound of Mark's
calls from his cell.
MARK
Guard! Please!
Finally, the cries are too much to ignore. Besides, this old
guy is getting annoying. The guard goes up to Mark's cell door
and looks in the small, eye-level window.
MARK
Please, you've got to help me. My
son is in terrible danger.
GUARD #1
Yeah?
MARK
He's going to be killed. You've
got to let me get a message to him.
GUARD #1
I can do that.
MARK
You can? Oh, thank God.
GUARD #1
Sure, I can do anything I want,
'cause I'm free. You, on the other
hand, can't do anything but make
up ridiculous stories to waste my
time.
The guard turns and walks away.
MARK
No, wait! Come back!
The guard ignores him, strolling away.
MARK
They're going to kill him! You
have to help me!
And on the guard's indifference and Mark's despair, we:

16 INT. IAN TRAINOR'S OFFICE - DAY 16
Ian Trainor sits at his desk, tapping away at his computer, so
lost in his transactions he doesn't notice there's anyone in
the room until a WALLET lands on the desk in front of him. He
looks up to see Ross Canin lowering over him.
CANIN
Look inside.
Blankly, Ian picks up the wallet and opens it. There's nothing
inside.
CANIN
What do you see?
IAN
Nothing. It's empty.
CANIN
That wallet is full of cash.
IAN
I don't understand.
CANIN
There's five thousand dollars in
there -- and you've got thirty
seconds to hand it over.
Ian is completely confused. Canin pulls out a gun.
CANIN
29, 28, 27...
IAN
Take it.
He thrusts the wallet at Canin, who pushes it aside.
CANIN
The cash, Trainor. 21, 20, 19,
running out of time.

You're nuts.
Canin doesn't answer, just pulls the hammer back on his

CANIN
I'm still waiting. 8, 7, 6...
IAN
Please, I don't know what you're
talking about!
CANIN
3, 2, 1.
He pulls the trigger. The hammer CLICKS. The gun isn't loaded.
Ian nearly sobs with relief. Canin hauls him to his feet and
slams him against his desk.
CANIN
Now how did that make you feel? A
little concerned, maybe even a
touch nervous?
IAN
What do you want from me?
CANIN
I want you to feel the way I do
every time someone asks me for
their money. I want you to share
the sensation of running a multi-
million dollar enterprise and not
being able to draw enough cash to
pay a secretary. Or a mortgage. Or
a parking ticket.
IAN
It's not my fault.
Canin lets go of Ian, then casually ejects the empty magazine,
and puts in a loaded one from his pocket, cocking it.
IAN
Gordon Ganza hid his assets in
hundreds of accounts -- even I
don't know where lots of them are.
Canin finishes loading his gun and points it at Ian.

I guess watching Sesame Street
finally paid off for you, Canin.
You count real pretty.
Canin spins round to see Steve standing behind him. Canin
stares at him for a long moment, then puts his own gun away.
CANIN
I'm in the middle of a private
meeting with my accountant,
Detective.
STEVE
So I see. I'd wait, but I prefer
to talk to Trainor while he's
still alive.
CANIN
Nothing's going to happen to my
little buddy here.
(pats Ian's cheek)
Not in the immediate future,
anyway.
And with that, Ross Canin walks past Steve and out of the
room. Ian pulls himself together.
IAN
I don't want to press charges.
STEVE
That's a surprise. I thought you
enjoyed putting people in jail.
IAN
What are you talking about?
STEVE
You tell me.
He gives Trainor a long, hard stare. The accountant turns away
and goes back behind his desk.

The cane whistles through the air, missing Ian's head by a
fraction of an inch, and slams down on the table. Ian jumps.

ARCHER
The same shooter who killed Eddie

shooter is Ross Canin's driver, Oz
Tatum.
MASTERS
Based on a tattoo?
ARCHER
And logic. Now that all of them
are dead, Canin's practically
running Ganza's organization.
STEVE
Canin had me shot so he could kill
Ganza and pin it on someone
outside the organization - my
father.
ARCHER
Canin knew there'd be a struggle
for control after Ganza died, and
he positioned himself to take over.
Archer likes it. She turns to the Chief for his opinion. He
doesn't look pleased.

Masters rises slowly from behind his desk and hands Archer the

There's a tense moment as Masters stares down at her. Archer

And as Amanda whips back the sheet, we CUT TO:
23 EXT. HOUSE - DAY 23
A small, modest house in the valley. Canin's LIMO is parked in
front of the detached garage, on the side driveway, facing the
street. Steve gets out of his car, draws his gun and, leaving
behind his cane, walks slowly up to the front door. He knocks
and steps to one side. No answer. He knocks again.
STEVE
Open up, Tatum. This is the police.
That's when he hears the SLAM of A SCREEN DOOR in the back.
Steve hobbles as fast as he can to the driveway, getting there
just as Tatum is starting the car and -- KA-BLAMMO! -- the
limo EXPLODES, hurling Steve straight back into CAMERA. And we
CUT TO:
24 EXT. PRISON - ESTABLISHING - NIGHT 24
25 INT. PRISON - CELL - NIGHT 25
Mark sits in the darkness, staring at the walls, utterly
alone, when he hears an ELECTRIC HUM and the door UNLATCHES.
GUARD #1 opens it. Mark shields his eyes, squinting into the
light.
GUARD #1
Come with me.
26 INT. PRISON - VISITING ROOM - NIGHT 26
The guard leads Mark to a small table with a phone.
GUARD #1
The warden said to put the call in
to you.
MARK
Who is it?
GUARD #1
The morgue.
Mark tenses, expecting the worse. With great trepidation, he
picks up the phone.

MARK
Mark Sloan.
AMANDA'S VOICE
It's Amanda.
INTERCUT WITH:
27 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL - PATHOLOGY - NIGHT 27
TIGHT on Amanda, on the phone.
AMANDA
I probably abused my authority as
county medical examiner to reach
you, but this couldn't wait.
MARK
How bad.
(gets hold of himself)
How badly is Steve hurt?
AMANDA
(stunned)
You know about the bomb?
MARK
Tell me, please.
AMANDA
I'll let him tell you.
We pull back to reveal Steve as she hands the phone to him.
Mark blinks back tears of relief.
STEVE
Dad?
MARK
Oh, thank God. Are you all right?
STEVE
I'm a little charred around the
edges, but I'm okay. It's a good
thing I'm slow on my feet these
days.
(then)
How did you know about the bomb?
MARK
Malcolm Trainor.

STEVE
It figures.
(then)
You were right about Carlotta
Mendoza. She's here.
Unfortunately, we didn't find her
in time. She's dead.
Mark winces. There went his last chance.
MARK
They couldn't let her live.
Probably the only reason they
didn't kill her before was to keep
you busy looking for her.
STEVE
We found the shooter - Oz Tatum.
He's the same guy who killed Eddie
Tampa. He's also Ross Canin's
driver.
MARK
Will he talk?
STEVE
Tatum died in the explosion.
(then)
It's not over yet, Dad. We're
getting close, or they wouldn't be
rushing to cover their tracks with
corpses.
MARK
Just make sure yours isn't one of
them.
STEVE
That's the plan.
And on Mark's relief, we CUT TO:
28 INT. PRISON - NIGHT 28
Mark is led back to his cell. As soon as the bars hiss shut,
Malcolm emerges from the darkness of his cell to speak to Mark.
MALCOLM
What a tragedy that the landlady
and the shooter are dead. How will
you ever prove your innocence?
Mark sits on his bunk and doesn't bother to look at Trainor.

MALCOLM
Maybe some day though, if you pray
very hard, you'll get the same
good news I got today.
(then)
The State Supreme Court heard my
appeal this afternoon. With luck,
I could be back in my house by
this time tomorrow.
Malcolm smiles and melts back into the darkness. And on Mark,
contemplating his fate, we CUT TO:
29 INT. GANZA'S BEACH HOUSE - DAY 29
A meek little man we will come to know as HARVEY MITTLEBAUM,
40s, sits on an ottoman, his briefcase on his lap, glancing
nervously between the TWO HUGE THUGS towering over him on
either side. Ross Canin stands in front of him, flipping
through a thick sheaf of papers.
CANIN
What does this all mean, Harvey?
And why were you nailing it to my
door?
Harvey doesn't want to say this, but he has no choice.
HARVEY
It means that uh, I, on behalf of
Southland Bank and Trust, am
repossessing this house and
putting it up for immediate sale.
CANIN
This house belongs to Ganza
Holdings, which means it now
belongs to me.
HARVEY
Actually, uh, sir, Ganza Holdings
is seven months in arrears on its
payments - and not just on this
house.
Harvey dreads what he has to say next.
HARVEY
I'm afraid we're simultaneously
foreclosing on the cabin in Big
Bear, the Wilshire penthouse, the
apartment in San Francisco, the-
Canin interrupts, shaking the papers in his fist.

29 CONTINUED: 29
CANIN
One more word, Harvey, and I will
nail this to your face.
Harvey immediately closes his mouth and his eyes. Canin tosses
the papers to a thug, who catches them.
CANIN
Get Trainor down here. Now.
The thug nods and goes to the front door. He gets it open just
a crack when - BAM! - Archer kicks it into his face and storms
in, leading a TEAM OF POLICE OFFICERS in flack jackets and
LAPD-emblazoned windbreakers, guns out, ready for action. At
the same instant, COPS seem to come in from every possible
direction, herding in THUGS from throughout the house.
Archer aims her gun squarely at Canin, who has his gun half-
way out of his jacket.
ARCHER
Go ahead, Ross. Show me what a
fast draw you are.
Canin slowly draws his hand out of his jacket and drops the
gun on the floor. Archer kicks it away and puts her gun to his
head.
ARCHER
On your knees, hands on your head.
Canin does as he's told.
ARCHER
You're under arrest for the
murders of Tony Velardi, Frankie
Caprice, Mitch Stein, and Eddie
Tampa.
Archer glances at Harvey, then back at Canin.
ARCHER
Gee, I hope this doesn't hurt your
credit rating.
And on Canin, simmering with fury, we CUT TO:
30 INT. POLICE STATION - OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY 30
Steve watches, fascinated, as
"Retribution - Part Two" 28.
31 INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY 31
Tanis Archer paces back and forth in front of a very smug Ross
Canin.
ARCHER
Just a couple of months ago, you
were Gordon Ganza's towel boy. Now
you're running the whole operation.
CANIN
Guess those motivational thinking
tapes really worked.
ARCHER
That, and a half dozen murders.
CANIN
"Turning Tragedy into
Opportunity." I think that was
tape six.
Archer glances at the mirror.
32 INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY 32
Steve is watching on the other side.
33 BACK TO SCENE 33
Archer walks around the table.
ARCHER
How about turning Ganza's
chauffeur into your personal
hitman? Which tape was that on?
CANIN
Where's my lawyer?
ARCHER
He won't be coming. Funny thing
about lawyers, they like to get
paid. Seems Ganza's retainer check
bounced.
That got to him. Archer leans in close.
ARCHER
You're on your own.
CANIN
I need to make another call.
(CONTINUED)
"Retribution - Part Two" 29.
33 CONTINUED: 33
ARCHER
It's all caving in around you. The
murders, Ganza's empire, and
there's no one who can help you,
not since you blew up Oz Tatum.
CANIN
Get me a phone.
ARCHER
You can't afford a real lawyer.
You'll be stuck with some green
public defender. Just imagine the
kind of deal he'll get for you.
Canin squirms. He knows he's fried.
ARCHER
I'm your only hope. Who knows?
Talk enough, and make it good,
maybe you'll go into witness
protection, end up in a tract home
instead of a gas chamber.
It looks like he might just crack - and that's when the door
SLAMS OPEN and Masters marches in.
MASTERS
(to Canin)
Get out.
Archer stares at the Chief. So does Canin.
ARCHER
This man is under arrest as a
suspect in the murders of --
MASTERS
Not anymore.
(to Canin)
You are free to go.
Canin shoots Archer a smug look, straightens his suit, and
strolls out just as Steve emerges from the observation room.
CANIN
Hope you enjoyed the show. And be
sure to say hello to your dad.
Canin leaves, Steve charges into the interrogation room.
Before Steve can say anything, Masters slams the door and
faces them both.

"Retribution - Part Two" 30.
33 CONTINUED: (2) 33
MASTERS
I gave you explicit orders not to
harass Canin or confront his
driver. And yet you did both.
Archer is barely holding her rage in check.
ARCHER
(tightly)
The man you just set free is the
new boss of the Ganza
organization - he could have told
us everything.
MASTERS
Yes, he could.
STEVE
Then why did you let him walk out
of here?
Masters gives them a long, cool, appraising look. Then:
MASTERS
Because he works for me.
And on Steve and Archer's shock, we:
FADE OUT:
END OF ACT SIX
"Retribution - Part Two" 31.
ACT TWO
FADE IN:
34 INT. POLICE STATION - MASTERS' OFFICE - NIGHT 34
It's all Steve and Archer can do to restrain their rage as
Masters leads them into his office.
ARCHER
How many mobsters do you have on
your payroll?
MASTERS
Not as many as I'd like.
He closes the door and then turns to them.
MASTERS
Ross Canin is a police officer.
That stops them both. Now it is all making sense.
STEVE
That's why you just stood back and
watched the bloodshed... so Canin
could take over.
MASTERS
Canin is smart enough to take
advantage of a situation.
ARCHER
And you're smart enough to create
one.
(angry)
Exactly how much of this mob war
was your idea?
Masters just gives her a look.
MASTERS
Canin had nothing to do with
Ganza's deaths, or any of the
others.
ARCHER
How do I know that?
Masters doesn't break his gaze.
(CONTINUED)
"Retribution - Part Two" 32.
34 CONTINUED: 34
MASTERS
Because I'm telling you. If that's
a problem, I'll be glad to accept
your resignation.
A tense moment, then THE PHONE RINGS. Masters snatches it up.
MASTERS
Masters.
He listens for a moment, his face unreadable.
MASTERS
Thank you.
He hangs up and looks at his detectives.
MASTERS
The State Supreme Court has
reversed Malcolm Trainor's
conviction.
And on Steve's look, we CUT TO:
35 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL - PATHOLOGY - DAY 35
Amanda and Jesse stand over the cover body of Carlotta Mendoza.
JESSE
If only we'd found her a day
earlier - now we'll never know
what she could have told us.
AMANDA
Just because she's dead, that
doesn't mean she can't tell us
something.
(then)
Carlotta bled to death, but she
didn't kill herself. She was too
drugged out to comb her hair, much
less slit her wrists.
Amanda hands Jesse a file. Jesse scans it.
JESSE
She was pumped full of
barbiturates.
(reads, then)
Carlotta was also very sick some
time in the last few months. Look
at the level of influenza
antibodies in her blood.
Jesse hands the file back, pointing at something on the page.

AMANDA
I did.
(then)
That level suggests to me that
it's from a vaccination, rather
than an actual occurrence of the
flu.
JESSE
When do you think she got the
vaccine?
AMANDA
I'd say four or five months ago.
JESSE
About the same time Mark was being
framed.
Jesse comes to a realization.
JESSE
Amanda - four months ago we were
giving employees flu vaccines here.
And we QUICKLY FLASHBACK to:
36 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL - DAY (FLASHBACK) 36
Mark giving flu vaccines to the staff.
37 BACK TO SCENE 37
Amanda shakes her head.
AMANDA
So was every hospital and medical
clinic in town.
JESSE
But what if she was here... it
would explain a lot... like how
Mark's glasses end up at Summer's
apartment and his shirt got
covered in her blood.
AMANDA
I'll pull the employee records and
the vaccine authorization forms
they had to sign.
38 EXT. PRISON - ESTABLISHING - DAY 38
"Retribution - Part Two" 34.
39 INT. PRISON - VISITING ROOM - DAY 39
Mark sits across from Steve, separated by thick glass. Steve
has just filled Mark in on everything. They are the only ones
in the room.
STEVE
Amanda and Jesse discovered that
Carlotta Mendoza got a flu shot at
Community General the day after I
was gunned down.
MARK
What was she doing there?
STEVE
Working as a temp.
Mark has a sudden realization... and we FLASHBACK to:
40 INT. COMMUNITY GENERAL - LOCKER ROOM - DAY (FLASHBACK) 40
Mark sticks his shirt, stained by a leaking pen, into the
trash.
41 BACK TO SCENE 41
MARK
They knew the pen was going to
leak in my shirt, and that I would
have to change.
STEVE
She was there, waiting for it.
That's how the shirt ended up
covered with Summer Phillips'
blood.
MARK
It all makes sense. But these are
just guesses without proof to back
them up.
STEVE
The only thing I don't get is
where the Trainors fit in to all
this.
MARK
The one nice thing about prison is
you have plenty of time to think.
(then)
What if this never had anything to
do with me?
(CONTINUED)

41 CONTINUED: 41
STEVE
But you're here - and so is
Malcolm Trainor. Besides, he knows
too much not to be involved.
MARK
I didn't say he wasn't involved.
But this was never about framing
me, I was a fringe benefit.
STEVE
Then what's going on?
MARK
The mob war, my frame, it's all a
big distraction - to keep us from
seeing what's really going on.
MASTERS' VOICE
A theft.
They turn to see that, much to their surprise, Masters has
slipped into the room. Mark smiles at him.
MARK
Exactly. The Trainor brothers run
the accounting firm that handles
the mob's money. They sparked this
war so the mob would be so busy
shooting each other, they wouldn't
notice their accounts were being
emptied.
It starts to dawn on Steve.
STEVE
By framing you for Ganza's murder,
the Trainors found a way to get
Malcolm out of prison... and get
their revenge.
MARK
Apparently, Malcolm spent his time
here thinking, too.
Steve turns to Masters.
STEVE
Now that you know the truth, go to
the D.A, get my father out of here.
Masters gives Steve a stony look.

If you want your father freed,
Steve, stop thinking like a son
and start thinking like a

STEVE
So how do we prove it?
Masters shares a look with Mark.
MASTERS
We find the mob money.
42 INT. POLICE STATION - CAPTAIN'S OFFICE - DAY 42
A weary Archer looks up at Masters and Steve over a huge stack
of papers that sit on the desk she's commandeered.
ARCHER
There is no mob money.
STEVE
It's all gone?
ARCHER
I've searched through every
account, every dummy corporation.
(to Masters)
Your man Canin might be able to
dig up enough for lunch -- if he
eats light.
MASTERS
How much is missing?
ARCHER
The records Canin gave us are a
little confusing, but it looks
like someone's walked off with
something like half a billion
dollars.
MASTERS
Ian Trainor.
STEVE
My father was right - killing
Ganza was just a distraction,
along with the mob war it set off.

"Retribution - Part Two" 37.

MASTERS
If there was a mob war.
(off their looks)
A lot of those shootings were
committed by one man.
ARCHER
Oz Tatum, Canin's driver -- and we
know Canin wasn't sending him out
on hits.
(to Masters)
Don't we?
Masters just gives her a look, letting her insinuation pass.
STEVE
When Tatum stopped being useful,
Ian planted that bomb in his car.
Which not only silenced the one
man who could finger him --
ARCHER
-- but increased the heat on
Canin, who was asking Ian too many
questions about the missing money.
Steve turns to the Chief.
STEVE
I'd say we have just proved my
father is innocent.
MASTERS
No one cares what you say,
detective. For now, it's all talk
and supposition. The Trainors are
still calling the shots.
Masters takes his gun, holsters it, and puts on his jacket as:
MASTERS
It's time for that to change.
And as Masters marches out of the room, we CUT TO:
43 INT. PRISON - CELL BLOCK - DAY 43
Mark sits in his cell as Malcolm walks out of his, dressed in

It's a shame I won't be here to
see you take that long walk. But
I'll be dreaming about it.
Malcolm starts to turn away, then has a second thought.
MALCOLM
Oh, and don't worry, I'll look
after your son for you.
Mark rises to the bars but Malcolm is already walking away.
And on Mark's frustration, we CUT TO:
44 EXT. PRISON - DAY 44
Malcolm emerges, a satisfied, free man, and strides towards a
BLACK LINCOLN with tinted glass windows, the engine idling. He
opens the passenger door and gets in.
45 INT. LINCOLN - DAY 45
And that's when he sees Masters behind the wheel. Malcolm
immediately goes for the door, but Masters hits the automatic
door locks.
MALCOLM
Where's my brother?
MASTERS
He got pulled over for speeding.
He'll be a while.
Masters shifts into drive.
MASTERS
Put on your seatbelt, Malcolm.
It's the law now.
And as Masters peels off, CUT TO:

MASTERS
Let's take a walk.
MALCOLM
No.
MASTERS
After all those years in jail,
don't you want to stretch your
legs?
MALCOLM
I'm not leaving this car.
Masters looks at him, a look full of menace.
MASTERS
Do you think it makes a difference?
Masters gets out of the car. Malcolm sits a moment, considers
his options. There are none. He gets out.
MASTERS
You and your brother killed a lot
of people to get Ganza's money.
They walk a few steps from the car, Malcolm keeping his
distance from the Chief.
MALCOLM
I've been in prison for seven
years. And I've never killed
anyone.
Masters casually takes out his service revolver and clicks off
the safety.
MASTERS
You gunned down one of my
detectives, started a mob war on
my streets and framed a man for
murder. You know how that makes my
department look?
MALCOLM
How do you think this will look?
Masters glances at him quizzically. Malcolm looks around
desperately, but there is no where to go, no one to scream to
for help.

what happens to you?
Masters aims the gun at him. Malcolm backs away.
MALCOLM
My brother does. He's probably
looking for me right now.
Masters takes a few steps forward. Malcolm keeps backing up.
MALCOLM
You can't do this.
MASTERS
If it'd been up to me, you would
have been executed seven years
ago... right after the verdict was
read.
Masters FIRES... and a CAN behind Malcolm JUMPS into the air.
Masters empties his revolver into it, making it dance, Malcolm
flinching with each LOUD, REVERBERATING GUNSHOT. Masters
glances at Malcolm, who has probably soiled himself.
MASTERS
But it's not up to me... because
I obey the law. You choose not to.
That's the difference between you
and me.
(then)
Let me give you some advice. Have
an epiphany today. Or our next
chat won't be so friendly.
Masters holsters his gun and strides back to his car, Malcolm
staring after him, wide-eyed.
MASTERS
Be seeing you, Malcolm.
And as Masters drives off, and Malcolm sags with relief, we:

ACT THREE
FADE IN:

A van sits in an alley.
48 INT. VAN - NIGHT 48
Masters, Archer, Steve and Canin are going over papers.
CANIN
The entire Ganza organization is
bankrupt.
ARCHER
The last piece of property to go
was the apartment building Summer
Phillips lived in.
CANIN
I guess Ian's got a sentimental
streak after all.
STEVE
Just think, we spend years going
after LA's biggest organized crime
operation with everything we've
got -- and the Trainor brothers
take it out in six months with a
computer and a checkbook.
MASTERS
So where's the money?
Archer and Canin share a moment. They haven't been looking
forward to this.
ARCHER
Ian's smart, he didn't leave a
trail.
CANIN
Our best guess is he wired it into
a numbered account in the Caymans.

than ten seconds before being
scattered into a hundred accounts
across the world.

(off their looks)
Ian knows that eventually any
electronic transfer can be traced.
STEVE
What's the alternative? Gold?
ARCHER
That much gold leaving the country
is going to be noticed, no matter
how hard he tries to cover his
tracks.
MASTERS
Cash.
They all look at him.
MASTERS
You know, those green slips of
paper you redeem for goods and
services?
STEVE
But sir, the federal government
tracks any cash transaction over
ten thousand dollars. How could
Ian liquefy Ganza's assets without
bringing the IRS down on him?
Canin is smiling now, it all makes sense to him.
CANIN
He couldn't. The Feds would have
figured it out... some day.
(then)
But by then, the Trainors will
have bought their own country and
be safe from extradition.
STEVE
That doesn't bring us any closer

Masters paces, deep in thought.

CANIN
It's got to be in one of the Ganza
Holdings properties.
ARCHER
I thought they'd all been
repossessed.
CANIN
Or sold. In this case, I'd guess
to another holding company, this
one owned by the Trainors.
Steve takes a thick file of papers.
STEVE
We're going to have to track down
the ownership of every one of
these properties.
ARCHER
There isn't enough time. We have
to find a way to narrow down the
list.
STEVE
(looking at the file)
So where do we start? Ganza owned
everything from a shipyard in Long
Beach to a luxury hotel in
Pasadena to a warehouse in Indio.
Masters freezes.
MASTERS
Indio?
STEVE
Yeah, Desert Storage and Hauling
off Highway 87.
Steve looks up to see Masters, Archer, and Canin sharing a

What am I missing?

The Cabazon Compromise of 1986.

Including anything he ever owned

And on Steve's dawning realization:
49 INT. TRAINOR'S OFFICE - DAY 49
Ian arrives for work, his SECRETARY trailing behind him.
IAN
Malcolm didn't show up for
breakfast. Did he call?
SECRETARY
No.
IAN
Track him down for me, then. Tell
the boys I want the financial
projections on the Lichtman
investments by noon today. I'm
meeting with Larry Goldstein in
ten minutes, so tell April to get
the statements up here.
MASTERS (O.S.)
Cancel the meeting with Larry.
They turn to see Masters and Steve striding into the office.
MASTERS
And tell the boys they have all
day on those projections.
IAN
Get my lawyer on the phone,

She nods and hurries away.

Several hundred million dollars
you've cashed out of mob accounts.
Steve takes Ian by the arm and leads him out. And on Ian's
face, we CUT TO:
50 EXT. WAREHOUSE - DAY 50
Masters and Steve walk Ian to the massive door.
MASTERS
Open it.
IAN
I insist we wait for my lawyer to

Master sighs wearily, reaches into Ian's jacket pocket and
pulls out the keys. He tosses them to Steve, who unlocks a
CONTROL BOX and hits the SWITCH inside. The MASSIVE DOORS
slide open to reveal:
51 INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY 51
Masters, Steve and Ian are framed in the opening. We PULL BACK
to reveal an EMPTY WAREHOUSE. Ian is stunned, but quickly
covers. Masters and Steve are shocked, too.

Got it buried, Ian?
(knocks on wall)
In here, maybe?
STEVE
State Police are on the way to
search every inch of the property.
MASTERS
We'll find it... even if we have
to demolish this place to do it.
Ian summons all the dignity he can muster.
IAN
Search all you want. But call me
a cab -- I've got to get back to
LA.
Masters and Steve share a despairing look.
52 INT. TRAINOR'S OFFICE - DAY 52
Ian blows into his office and goes directly to the phone. He
dials quickly and is waiting to connect when he sees Ross
Canin rising from the couch and moving quickly towards him.
Ian drops the phone and forces a smile.
IAN
Mr. Canin. What can I do for you?
Canin gets right in his face.
CANIN
Give me my money.
IAN
It will be here soon.
Canin grabs him by the back of the neck and slams him FACE
FIRST into the wall, smashing his nose.

CANIN
My accounts are empty.
IAN
We have to keep the money moving.
If it stays in one place too
long --
Canin slams Ian into the wall again.
CANIN
The banks are foreclosing on our
assets.
IAN
Just hold on for a little while
longer and --
Canin slams him into the wall again.
CANIN
I want to see the money on this
desk in two hours.
Canin lets go of him, letting the accountant slide to the
floor, and slowly walks out, oblivious to the CROWD OF SHOCKED
ACCOUNTANTS gathered outside the door. And on Ian, clutching
his nose, terrified, we CUT TO:
53 INT. LIMO - DAY 53
Canin gets into the backseat, slams the door, and starts to
pull the LISTENING DEVICE out of his shirt. His driver, Tanis
Archer, turns in her seat, revealing the radio-plug in her ear.
ARCHER
Was that really necessary?
CANIN
No.
(then)
I should have shot him in the
stomach. He would have told me
anything I wanted to know.
He tosses the listening device in the front seat and massages
his knuckles.
ARCHER
I think you're enjoying this a
little too much.

CANIN
If I keep being this gentle,
either they'll know I'm a cop or
they'll kill me because I'm too
weak to lead.
ARCHER
You could walk away from this.
CANIN
My wife and kid would like that.
(then)
But it's not an option. Not yet.
Archer glances at him in the rear-view mirror, seeing him in
a new light.
CANIN
Let's go. We are behind schedule.
Archer turns around, leaving Canin to his thoughts, and drives
off.
54 INT. TRAINOR'S OFFICE - DAY 54
Ian is holding a HANDKERCHIEF to his nose and ushering the
other accountants out of his office.
IAN
It was just a minor disagreement.
It's all settled. Everyone get
back to work.
(to secretary)
Where's my brother?
SECRETARY
I can't reach him. But sir, while
you were in your, ah, conference,
your pilot called. I figured it
was better not to interrupt you.
Ian sits up straight.
IAN
My pilot?
SECRETARY
Rick got food poisoning, but a
replacement pilot is on his way to
the airport. He's sorry for the
delay, but says you can still get
to Costa Rica by morning.
Ian reacts quickly to cover his surprise... and fury. He
struggles to his feet.

IAN
Thank you, Valerie.
SECRETARY
I wasn't aware you were going away.
IAN
It came up suddenly.
SECRETARY
Would you like me to arrange the
usual accommodations in Aljuela?
Ian tosses the handkerchief into the trash and heads for the
door.
IAN
I don't think so.
He hurries past her. And on her confusion, we CUT TO:
55 EXT. VAN NUYS AIRPORT - DAY 55
On an empty stretch of tarmac, we find a PRIVATE JET. Malcolm
emerges, sweaty and harried, just as Ian drives up in his
EXPENSIVE SPORTS CAR. Malcolm is as surprised to see Ian as
his brother is to see him. Ian marches up to him.
IAN
Going somewhere?
MALCOLM
I don't know.
IAN
Only because the pilot isn't here
yet. Don't worry - he's on his way.
MALCOLM
This isn't what it looks like.
IAN
You mean you aren't on your way to
Costa Rica in my private jet?
MALCOLM
I'm not going anywhere. I don't
even know how I got here.
IAN
I suppose you also don't know
where all our money is.
Malcolm stares at his brother in shock.

MALCOLM
The money is gone?
IAN
The warehouse is empty, Malcolm.
And you're in our plane, about to
go to Costa Rica.
MALCOLM
Ian, please, listen to me. I was
kidnapped.
IAN
Really?
Ian marches past him to the plane. Malcolm follows after him.
MALCOLM
They broke into my house and
drugged me. I didn't see their
faces.
IAN
Of course not.
Ian works the latch on the cargo hold.
MALCOLM
Next thing I know, I'm in the
plane, bound and gagged. I managed
to free myself moments before you
arrived.
Ian lifts up the door: THE CARGO HOLD IS STUFFED WITH CASH.
IAN
Nice of the kidnappers to give you
some traveling money.
MALCOLM
Don't you see, it's a trick.
IAN
I know.
Ian turns around - and aims a GUN at his brother.
IAN
How come you haven't asked about
my face, Malcolm?
MALCOLM
Ian, calm down and listen to me-

Ross Canin happened to it. You
were going to sacrifice me to
them, weren't you? While you ran
off with all the money.
MALCOLM
Put down the gun and think. They
could be listening.
IAN
After everything I've done for
you. Starting the war, emptying
the accounts, framing Sloan. I was
just a tool. A means to an end.
Like your wife was.
Malcolm's face hardens and he advances on his brother. Behind
Ian, we can see POLICE CARS charging out of a HANGAR towards
them.
MALCOLM
Shut up, Ian, and give me the gun.
IAN
I made a stupid mistake. I assumed
because you're my brother I could
trust you.
Malcolm goes for Ian. They struggle for the gun, rolling over
each other on the ground, as the cars screech to a stop around
the plane. A GUNSHOT goes off. Archer jumps out of the lead
car and pulls Malcolm off Ian. But it's too late. Ian is dead.
Malcolm stares down at his dead brother in horror, then looks
up to see Masters and Steve coming towards him.
MALCOLM
You did this.
MASTERS
Yes, I did.
(then)
With some help.
Masters glances over his shoulder. Malcolm follows his gaze to
see MARK SLOAN emerging from the car. Mark smiles at him.
MARK
Don't worry, Malcolm, they saved
your cell for you.
Malcolm stares at him in disbelief. Masters motions to the
officers to take Malcolm away. Mark joins Masters and takes a
deep breath.

MARK
What a lovely day.
MASTERS
You realize that, technically,
you're not free yet.
MARK
Steve is alive, Malcolm is going
back to jail, that's free enough
for me.
And on their victorious smiles, we DISSOLVE TO:
56 INT. BEACH HOUSE - DAY 56
It's a party, of sorts. There's food everywhere. Mark, Steve,
Jesse, Amanda, and Archer are gathered around the television,
where Chief Masters is in uniform, making a statement to the
press.
57 ON THE TV - THEIR POV 57
Masters meets the press.
MASTERS
I wouldn't characterize it as a
miscarriage of justice. The
officers and the courts acted
properly based on the evidence
available at the time. When new
evidence came to light, they acted
just as swiftly to make certain
that justice was done.
REPORTER'S VOICE
But an innocent man still went to
prison.
MASTERS
He's not there now. That is the
story. Thank you.
58 BACK TO SCENE 58
Mark clicks off the TV.
JESSE
He's a snake.
STEVE
He's a politician.

ARCHER
He's a police officer.
JESSE
Masters could at least have
apologized for what he did.
MARK
I think in his own way, he has.
AMANDA
He didn't mention a thing about
the Trainors and the money they
embezzled from the mob.
ARCHER
He doesn't want to say anything
that might jeopardize ongoing
investigations.
MARK
What did happen to all that money?
MASTERS (O.S.)
Let's just say that Ross Canin has
solidified his position at the top
of organized crime in Southern
California.
They turn, surprised to see Masters, still in uniform, coming
in from the entry way.
MASTERS
Forgive me for letting myself in.
MARK
Don't be silly, you're an invited
guest.
Mark offers him a slice of cake.
MASTERS
I'm afraid I didn't come for the
cake. I had to drop something off.
Masters hands Steve his BADGE and GUN.
MASTERS
Your shift starts at six am
tomorrow, if you're ready.
Steve glances at Jesse, who gives him a nod.
STEVE
I am. Thank you, sir.

MASTERS
May I have a word?
Masters pulls Steve aside, out of earshot of the others.
Archer shakes her head.
ARCHER
I've worked with him for three
years. Just once, I'd like to see
that man eat something.
59 INT. BEACH HOUSE - ENTRY AREA 59
Masters talks with Steve in a hushed voice.
MASTERS
I'm transferring you out of
homicide and reassigning you to my
task force on a permanent basis.
STEVE
I wish you wouldn't, sir.
Masters isn't used to being rebuffed.
MASTERS
I make the assignments, detective.
STEVE
Then you can have these back.
Steve offers Masters his gun and badge. Masters just looks at
them.
MASTERS
Why?
STEVE
I've seen how you work.
(then)
You're running the department and
organized crime now, which makes
the lines just a little too blurry
for me to live with.
MASTERS
There is only one line. The law.
STEVE
Tell that to Ian Trainor.
MASTERS
I couldn't have foreseen his death.

STEVE
Would you have prevented it if you
had?
Masters looks at Steve for a long moment, then:
MASTERS
I don't tolerate insubordination,
Detective.
(then)
I must be getting soft.
Masters leaves, letting Steve keep his badge and gun. Archer
follows him, giving Steve a wry salute on her way out. Steve
lets out a deep breath and returns to.
60 INT. BEACH HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY 60
...and rejoins the others, who are in mid-conversation.
MARK
There's only one thing I miss
about prison.
JESSE
The solitude?
AMANDA
The decor?
ARCHER
The stimulating coversation?
Mark steps into the kitchen and comes out with a tray of the
UGLIEST globs of food we've ever seen.
MARK
The food. It's even better than
what we serve at the hospital.
Dig in.
And on everyone's looks, we FADE OUT:
