Act One
Vicki is jogging through the woods when she comes upon Mike, approaching from another jogging path.
Vicki: Hey
Mike: Hey. How far you going?
Vicki: I don’t know… 10k.
Mike: Show off. So how’s Henry doing?
Vicki: Fine.
Mike: That’s good.
Vicki: Yeah, after he snacked on the mad monk that almost killed him he was like a kid again. You know, 480 years young. Spring lamb.
Mike stops jogging and turns to face Vicki who continues to jog in place for a few more seconds.
Mike: We’re not passed this yet are we?
Vicki: We’ll be fine… it’s just Henry almost died that night.
Mike: (rubbing his neck) Yeah, well there was a lot of that going on that night.
Vicki: I know. It just doesn’t make it any easier. (Looking at Mike’s neck) Does it hurt?
Mike: I’m heading back.
Vicki: What?
Mike: I’m just… I’m not feeling it today.
Mike jogs away as Vicki calls out to him.
Vicki: Mike, we’ll be fine! It’s just…
Vicki looks after Mike for a few minutes and then turns and runs in the other direction.
Nighttime in Toronto settles upon a posh house in the suburbs. The lights go on inside but are turned off as the camera focuses on two lovers who have just entered.
Brendan: But I want to see you.
Elena: Shhh. Close your eyes.
Elena leads Brendan into the dimly lit kitchen and begins to undress him as they kiss passionately.
Elena: Concentrate on your other senses. Tell me what you feel.
Brendan: Your skin, it’s soft like silk.
Elena: Mmm… good. And… what do you smell?
Brendan: You smell like the Ocean. Like you’re forever.
Elena: You’re very perceptive Brendan.
They continue to kiss and caress each other but out of the corner of his eye Brendan spots a mirror on a wall in a nearby hallway. Breaking the kiss he leads Elena to it. They kiss some more and then Brendan turns Elena to face the mirror.
Brendan: What’s wrong with me saying you’re beautiful? ‘Cause you are… ever since I saw you. Remember? And here we are finally…
As Brendan talks he continues to kiss and caress her but Elena has become distracted by her image in the mirror and no longer seems interested.
Elena: So my beauty moves you does it?
Brendan: Yeah…
Elena: And… would you do anything for my beauty?
Brendan: I’d do anything you want me to. I swear.
Elena turns around and crouches down, undoing the buckle on his pants. When she rises we see the back of her head, which is now covered in snakes. Brendan looks at her in horror, before he turns to stone.
Act Two
Brendan’s agent has turned up at Vicki’s office, needing some help to find the missing model.
Terri: He’s not the kind of kid who misses a booking. When he’s not answering his phone, something’s up.
Vicki: He’s early 20’s. I mean, how do you know he’s not sleeping it off somewhere?
Terri: Brendan’s a responsible kid. H-he’s very dedicated to his career.
Vicki: What about his parents? Have you talked to them?
Terri: His mother’s dead. Uh… father left when Brendan was in pre-school.
Vicki: So you’re all he has in the whole world? (Pauses) And?
Terri: (looking uncomfortable) And I loaned him six grand just before he disappeared.
Vicki: Ah.
Terri: I was supposed to get it back this week.
Vicki: What about drugs?
Terri: No. He likes clubbing, late nights, girls, but he’s very careful. That detective told me that you’d be able to help.
Coreen comes in with a tray of coffee and sets it on Vicki’s desk.
Vicki: (confused) That detective?
Coreen: Detective Mike Celluci? He referred Ms. Fulton.
Vicki: Ah… that detective.
Vicki shows Terri out as Coreen takes a look at Brendan’s modeling portfolio.
Terri: Thank you.
Vicki: I’ll call you.
Coreen: You realize that Mike giving you this case is like other guys giving you flowers.
Vicki: Yeah, never really been much for flowers.
Coreen: He can’t do right by you can he?
Vicki: What?
Coreen: I know he made a mistake and it nearly killed Henry, and you. But I thought the whole finding Henry, feeding Henry thing, sort of redeemed him.
Vicki: When did you become my mother?
Coreen: Cut him a break.
Vicki: I did. Sort of.
Coreen: What was the offer?
Vicki: Qualified mistrust.
Coreen: Yeah. Exactly.
Later that evening Vicki tries to talk Henry into going clubbing with her. She finds him in front of an easel, painting.
Vicki: So let me get this straight. You do this every year?
Henry: Every year.
Vicki: So this is her, huh? This is Christina.
Henry: This year’s version.
Vicki: What do you think about when you paint her?
Henry: Everything she gave me. Eternal youth, strength, power. And everything she took away, everything I let her take away.
Vicki: Come on, you were seventeen years old. She knew what she was doing. You didn’t.
Henry: Maybe. But she was beautiful and I loved her.
Vicki: Well then she was lucky.
Henry: Are you feeling lucky?
Vicki: Are you gonna go to the nightclub with me or what?
Henry: Last time we played sleuth I didn’t feel so good.
Vicki: Yeah but there’s a missing kid that could sure use our help. And the last place he was seen happened to be a nightclub full of hotties.
Henry: Well when you put it that way. Let me get my coat.
Henry leaves to stow away his paints and Vicki stands staring at the painting of Christina. A thought suddenly occurs to her.
Vicki: What happened to the other 480 paintings?
Later, Vicki and Henry stand outside the nightclub waiting to get in. The bouncer moves the rope aside.
Vicki: They never card me anymore, it’s tragic.
Dimitri: What’s tragic is you still care about that?
Vicki: Wow! A bouncer and a philosopher.
Vicki goes by him but Dimitri stops Henry before he can follow.
Dimitri: You, I’ll card.
Henry: I’m an old soul.
Dimitri: That counts buddy, but not for much.
Henry shows Dimitri his license and Dimitri lets him by. Vicki looks on, amused, as Henry joins her.
Vicki: If they only knew.
Inside the club Henry hits up the ladies while Vicki corners a waitress. She shows her Brendan’s picture.
Vicki: Excuse me.
Angela: Model?
Vicki: You know him.
Angela: Educated guess. It’s model central here.
Vicki: Yeah, I know. They calculated my body mass index before they let me in. So?
Angela: Brian? Brendan? Something like that, right?
Vicki: Yeah.
Angela: Crushing on the boss lady. Hanging around here whenever she was in the club.
Vicki: Did she return his attention?
Angela: She gets lots of attention. I don’t know what she returns to who.
Vicki: All right. Where can I find her?
Angela: Private booth. Look for the chain curtain. Excuse me.
Vicki: Thanks.
Henry, meanwhile, is chatting up a cute, young blond. He holds up a picture of Brendan.
Blonde: Oh yeah, sure, Brendan. Yeah, he brought his own backlight.
Henry: Sounds obnoxious.
Blonde: Actually, it was a nice night in. But I could have done without that broadcast on Fox City.
Henry: What’s Fox City?
Blonde: Oh, well that’s gonna cost you.
Henry: (as Vicki approaches) I happen to carry that legal tender.
Vicki: You busy?
Henry: Not anymore.
Blonde: Whatever happened to beauty before age?
Vicki: Age stomped beauty’s ass.
Henry and Vicki leave the blonde beauty and approach the private booth where they find the club’s owner, Elena.
Vicki: Hi, sorry to interrupt. Uh, my name’s Vicki Nelson, I’m a private investigator. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
Elena indicates that Vicki and Henry should sit.
Elena: Please.
Vicki: It must be hard to get any work done around here.
Elena: (keeping one eye on Henry) I’ve learned to tune out the distractions.
Henry holds out the picture of Brendan and Elena takes it.
Elena: He’s quite beautiful.
Vicki: Yeah, no shortage of that here.
Elena: We cater to the young here and youth is beauty.
Henry: It is one kind.
Vicki: His name’s Brendan Ledford. He was here… Tuesday night? And he didn’t show up for a booking the next day.
Elena: Maybe he met someone?
Vicki: He doesn’t miss bookings.
Elena: Things happen.
Henry: So you haven’t seen him?
Elena: I meet a lot of people. Most of them start looking the same after awhile.
Vicki: Do you have any problem with drugs here?
Elena: I run a clean club.
Vicki: Well, like you said, things happen. You mix hormones, booze and…
Henry: Boys will be boys.
Elena: (looking pensive) Yes, they will.
Vicki: Did Brendan ever act up with anyone here? You?
Elena: As I said, I don’t remember him.
Vicki: How about someone acting up with him? Lots of people who’d want something from a beautiful young man.
Elena: You mean sexual predators?
Vicki: Yes.
Elena: If you could tell me how to spot them I’d stop them but uh, they hide in plain sight now, don’t they? My club is safe, Ms. Nelson. Ask around, no one’s ever come to any harm here. Anything else?
Henry: I think we’re done here.
Henry gets up and admires a tattoo on Elena’s left breast, just above her heart, for a moment.
Henry: Thank you.
Henry and Vicki leave the club and as they walk they talk about the case.
Henry: She’s hiding something.
Vicki: Too bad it’s not that tattoo.
Henry: When did you become a prude?
Vicki: Five minutes ago.
Henry: Funny, that’s when the case became interesting for me.
Vicki: All right, so how do you know she’s hiding something?
Henry: Her heart started beating faster when she said she’d never met him.
Vicki: Oh, you’re the best lie detector a girl could have.
Henry: What about you?
Vicki: Well, she got a little edgy when you said ‘boys will be boy’ and she used the term ‘sexual predator’, not me.
Henry: So?
Vicki: So, it shows where her mind’s at. It’s interesting. Where was your mind at with that girl?
Henry: On the job of course.
Vicki: Mmm, find anything interesting?
Henry: Possibly. Fox City.
Vicki: Fox City. Hm.
Act Three
Vicki and Coreen research Henry’s Fox City lead the next day at the office.
Coreen: It’s frat boys and wannabes posting pictures of their conquests.
Vicki: Space invader?
Coreen: It’s my favorite video game.
Vicki: Ah. And what? Brendan posted to this site?
Coreen: He’s MC. Model Citizen. We can search by poster.
Coreen pulls up Brendan’s posts and finds pictures of more than a few scantily dressed young women on his page.
Vicki: Dear Lord. Do the girls know about this?
Coreen: Check out the comments. The ever popular ‘I’m so hot’. Here’s ‘I’d do me’. And my favorite, ‘I need this shot for my college application’.
Vicki: Whatever happened to the winsome awkwardness of teenagers? You know, they’re endearing shyness?
Coreen: Different website.
Vicki: Clearly. Go… go… Oh, stop!
Coreen pulls up a picture of a half exposed female breast with a tattoo just like the one Vicki and Henry spotted on Elena, the night before.
Vicki: Huh.
Coreen: Bitchin’ ink.
Vicki: You got that right.
Mike checks his watch as he enters Elena’s club. Walking through the empty lobby he sees someone working at the bar.
Mike: Hi.
Elena: Hi.
Mike: Detective Mike Celluci. I’m, uh, looking for a kid who may have gone missing? A Brendan Ledford. Your manager around?
Elena: Do you think the manager actually knows something about what goes on around here?
Mike: Yeah, sounds like my chief. Listen, um… you ever seen this kid around? Apparently he hung out here.
Elena: Well, he must be popular. A couple of people were here last night asking about him.
Mike: A woman with glasses?
Elena: Yeah, and a young guy.
Mike: That’s, uh, Vicki Nelson. She’s a private eye. But, uh, this became a police matter a couple of hours ago. You ever seen him around?
Elena: I’m afraid I’m the owner so I guess that makes me kinda useless.
Mike: Ah. Well, I somehow doubt that.
Elena: Well, I wish I could help you but he’s not familiar.
Mike: Yeah. Well… I guess a lot of people pass through here, huh?
Elena: Yeah, even those you wish would stay longer.
Mike turns back to Elena and they share a flirtatious smile.
That evening, Henry and Vicki pay a visit to Elena’s house.
Henry: So the picture of the tattoo proves she knows him.
Vicki: Thereby proving she’s a liar.
Henry: Can’t hide that note of glee, can you?
Vicki: Don’t deny me my small pleasures Henry.
Henry: So if we’re going to lean on her to try to get some more information, I call Brisco.
Vicki: (as she rings the doorbell) Actually, we’re counting on her not being home. And we’re PI’s, not cops.
Henry: Columbo, then?
Vicki: Also a cop.
Henry: Cannon?
Vicki: You want to be Cannon? Fat? Balding?
Henry: Good point.
Vicki: Well it appears that no one’s home. You wanna check?
Henry approaches the door and leans in to listen for signs of life.
Vicki: We good to go?
Henry pulls back and pats his chest.
Henry: Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
Vicki: It’s Friday night, she should be at her club.
Henry: If it is her, something’s wrong. Her heartbeat’s too slow.
Vicki: Well then, we proceed with plan A.
She pulls her lock picking tools out of her pocket as Henry leaves the doorway to take a look at the house. Suddenly there’s a whoosh of sound, causing Vicki to turn around and realize Henry has disappeared.
Henry: (whispered) Vicki!
Vicki looks up to see that Henry has jumped up to the second floor and he turns, going in an open terrace door.
Vicki: Show off!
Henry goes downstairs and lets Vicki in. They search the house together and Henry finds the life signs he’s been hearing in the hallway leading off the kitchen.
Henry: There.
Vicki: What? It’s a statue!
Henry: Vick, it’s still alive.
The approach the statue but are interrupted at the muted sounds of conversation and laughing.
Henry: Let’s go.
Vicki: Wait.
Outside, Elena is letting herself into the house. Mike is still with her.
Elena: Is it true that policemen can’t drink on duty?
Mike: It is true they’re not supposed to, yeah.
Elena: What kind of policeman are you?
Mike: The off duty kind.
Elena: Mmm, that seems promising.
Mike: So, are we gonna stand out here all night or are we…
Mike breaks off as he hears a thud from inside the house. He looks inside for a moment.
Mike: Is someone here?
Elena: No, there shouldn’t be.
Mike reaches for his gun holster and goes to enter the house.
Elena: Don’t.
Mike: Wait here.
Mike goes inside and Elena follows right behind him. Meanwhile, Henry is outside, by the gates, guarding the statue as a car comes squealing down the road. As Vicki approaches he picks up the statue with one hand and goes to open the back door and put it inside.
Henry: Can you even see?
Vicki: Not much. Look, get… get in the car. We’ll argue about who’s driving later!
Mike enters the kitchen, one hand still on the gun in his holster and Elena tries to convince him nothing’s wrong.
Elena: I think it was just a noise.
Mike: Well, let’s be sure.
Mike sees something through the doors of the kitchen and hurries out of the house after it. As he does, Elena realizes that the statue of Brendan is missing.
Back outside Henry is in the passenger seat and looks up at the house.
Henry: Floor it!
Vicki drives off, leaving rubber on the road as Mike runs out through the gates, looking up and down the road for a trace of the car he thought he saw.
Back at Vicki’s office, she, Henry and Coreen study the statue of Brendan.
Coreen: This is the actual Brendan Ledford? In the actual non-flesh?
Henry: It is.
Vicki: So, (sighs) what did she do to him? Is she a witch or something?
Coreen: It might be a spell but in the turns-to-stone department I’m thinking a basilisk or a gorgon?
Henry points at Coreen, clearly in agreement with her theory.
Vicki: Great, one’s an herb, the other’s a cheese.
Coreen: Basilisk, half-chicken, half-lizard. One look and you’re stoned.
Henry: The gorgons were sisters, Greek myth.
Coreen: Also practiced turning people to stone.
Vicki: Oh wait, was one of them named Medusa?
Coreen: You’ve been reading.
Vicki: I read!
Coreen: Firearms manuals.
Henry: If it is a gorgon we’re looking for, all Elena has in her arsenal is being Greek. No snakes, no ugly.
Coreen: And not a lot of basilisk sightings in town. Ever, actually
Henry: Nevertheless, I’ll keep my eyes open for a chicken-lizard.
Vicki: Why would you do that?
Henry: Because we were face to face with the woman and weren’t turned to stone.
Vicki: Oh… you’re trying to make me keep an open mind, aren’t you?
Henry: I know better than to do that. Speaking of which, Mike was at the house.
Vicki: What?
Henry: Michael Celluci, of your acquaintance, was at the home of Elena Kanapolous, suspected gorgon. As we were leaving, I… saw… him.
Vicki: Huh, It’s been 48 hours since the missing person’s case was filed. Homicide handles missing persons so Mike just caught the case, that’s all.
Coreen: Shouldn’t he have been at the nightclub?
Vicki: (scoffs) Regardless, it’s not a conflict. We share cases with Mike all the time. Shouldn’t you be trying to, you know; figure out a way to break this spell or whatever it is? I mean, there is still a 22 year old boy alive in here. We, apparently, are the only people who can help him.
Henry and Coreen watch Vicki, not buying her argument about conflicts of interest. Henry, in particular, is very amused by this turn of events.
Act Four
Vicki brings the ‘Fox City’ information to Mike at the station.
Vicki: Brendan posts phone pictures of his conquests to a website, Fox City? Elena’s on it.
Mike: Sure it’s him posting her?
Vicki: She has a very distinctive tattoo.
Mike: Any pictures of her face?
Vicki: Mike, it’s her. She lied about knowing Brendan. We both know that lies never stand alone.
Mike: Yeah, so you got a phone camera picture of a tattoo. You think that’s gonna hold up in court?
Vicki: Are you defending her?
Mike: No, I’m just asking police 101 type questions here, all right? You’ve got a phone camera picture of a tattoo, point one. Am I right?
Vicki: Look, we could confirm it was Brendan’s.
Mike: All right, you got any witnesses that saw them together? Huh? A-any priors? Hey, how about motive? Is she upset that he, uh, didn’t tip a waitress or something?
Vicki: Did you even run her?
Mike: I ran her, her address and her company. No priors, no complaints, no nothing.
Vicki: But it doesn’t mean there’s nothing to find.
Mike: Yeah, it doesn’t sound like you found it either.
Vicki: Mike, she knows him. She saw him the night he disappeared and… she’s got a really weird attitude about sexual assault.
Mike: Weird.
Vicki: Yeah, she thinks it only happens to women.
Mike: Vicki, a lot of people think that. It doesn’t make her guilty.
Vicki: You’ve decided she’s innocent?
Mike: No, I’m just following the facts. What are you doing? I mean, why haven’t you informed your client that this is a police matter now?
Vicki: I sent her my bill.
Mike: So why are you following it?
Vicki: This kid needs my help.
Mike: Oh, right, because the police aren’t help enough huh?
Vicki: No, not when they don’t listen.
Mike: No, you know what? How I operate as a cop and how I operate in my personal life, you don’t get a say in that any more. Okay? Seriously, Vicki, why don’t we just end this now? Okay? No harm, no foul.
Vicki: Just come back to my office. There’s something I need to show you. It’s evidence.
Mike: No, I can’t. Elena had a break-in last night. I gotta do paperwork later.
Vicki: Homicide cop doing a robbery? Anything missing?
Mike: No.
Vicki: Nothing.
Mike: Why?
Vicki: Nothing.
Mike: Yeah. If you say so.
Mike walks away as Vicki looks on. Vicki heads over to Elena’s club after her meeting with Mike to rattle Elena’s chains. She bangs on the door and the bouncer, Dimitri, comes to greet her.
Vicki: Your boss here?
Dimitri: No.
Vicki: I thought we had a connection you and I?
Dimitri doesn’t answer, just continues to block the door and look at Vicki.
Vicki: Okay, Aristotle, you can just give her a message then. Ask her… Does her house feel empty?
Vicki leaves and Elena approaches Dimitri. They share a pensive look with each other as they ponder Vicki’s message.
Later that evening Vicki talks with Henry over the phone as she returns to her office.
Henry: Was issuing a challenge wise?
Vicki: Now she knows we’re on to her. It makes most criminals nervous.
Henry: She didn’t seem like the nervous type.
Vicki: (as she approaches her darkened office door) Yeah. (noticing a flashlight moving around inside) Someone’s here.
Henry: Vicki, wait. I’m nearly there…
Vicki cuts Henry off as she closes her phone. She unsheathes her baton as she walks in cautiously. In her office she attacks a masked man and tries to fight him but he gets the upper hand and throws her across the room. Then he uses the sledgehammer he brought with him to smash Brendan’s statue.
Vicki: NO!
Dust permeates the room as the statue crashes in pieces and the masked man runs out. Vicki crawls over and grabs the piece of Brendan’s face and looks towards the sky.
A short time later Vicki is leaning back against her office door, drinking, as we hear hurried footsteps. She has gathered some of the larger pieces of the statue in a box which Henry sees as he comes to a stop in the doorway.
Vicki: I was cleaning up and I thought, um, well maybe I could put these pieces back together. I could do that, couldn’t I?
Henry walks a little further into the room and sits down on the floor across from Vicki.
Vicki: This is going to be a fun call to make. Hey I found your client. He’s in a million pieces in a box in my office.
Henry: Vicki…
Vicki: I’ll just tell her Brendan left town. End of story. She just wanted her money anyway.
Henry: Maybe you should figure this out tomorrow. Right now, you could use some sleep.
Vicki: Yeah, sleep. That’s a sweet solution. I could sleep half my life away.
She looks at Henry sadly.
Vicki: I’m sorry.
Henry just shakes his head
Vicki: Yeah, what is it about being young anyways? Why are we always insanely attracted to the bad boy, hm? The bad girl.
Henry: I’m sure Brendan thought there was something more.
Vicki: Yeah, her looks.
Henry: Beauty isn’t everything.
Vicki: It’s a lot.
Henry: But when it goes, and it does, you have to have a deeper connection.
Vicki: Do you think Brendan had that with Elena?
Henry: Sometimes it only goes one way. But you never find out until it’s too late.
Vicki: Your story with Christina?
Henry: Yes.
Vicki: Mike’s ‘looking into’ the break-in at Elena’s. He doesn’t do that for a living.
Henry: Do you think he’s interested?
Vicki: You saw her.
Henry: Mike is not that person, Vick.
Vicki: None of us are that person anymore. Not since we started looking into your world.
Mike is at the club, questioning the staff. Elena approaches from the bar.
Mike: Well, thanks again for your help, though.
Elena: Helpful?
Mike: A couple of people think they saw him on Tuesday night, but no one’s really sure.
Elena: I’m sorry.
Mike: Apparently, though, Brendan was crushing on you.
Elena: You’re kidding.
Mike: The waitress there says that, uh, you get a little too much of that kind of action to take notice.
Elena: Well I wish I’d noticed. I could have been more helpful. What are you going to do now?
Mike: I’ll conduct some more interviews, do some credit checks and um… stuff.
Elena: Stuff you can’t talk about?
Mike: Not with a civilian, no.
Elena: And I’m a civilian?
Mike: Would you rather be a suspect.
Elena: Depends. Are you going to interrogate me?
Mike: I might just have to do that.
Elena: Well, then, be suspicious. (noticing Dimitri coming in the door) Uh… Detective Celluci, have you had a chance to speak to Dimitri?
Mike: Yeah, yeah we spoke earlier.
Dimitri: About that boy. Right. I mostly remember the ones who cause trouble.
Elena: Apparently he had a crush on me.
Dimitri: Go figure. I’m gonna set up out front.
Dimitri’s response to Elena’s statement intrigues Mike and he decides to get a little more alone time with the bouncer.
Mike: Hey, let me help you with that.
Dimitri: I don’t need your help.
Elena: I thought we were going out?
Mike: This will just take a minute.
Outside, Mike questions Dimitri about Elena.
Dimitri: I admire her. We’ve worked together for a while now.
Mike: Must hurt to see all those guys chasing after her, huh?
Dimitri: If she doesn’t get hurt, it’s none of my business.
Mike: Oh, so if she does, it is?
Dimitri: That’s not what I mean.
Mike: A lot of good looking guys, too. That’s pretty tough competition for you.
Dimitri: Looks aren’t everything.
Mike: Yeah, you say that, but Elena’s a very beautiful woman.
Dimitri: Why don’t you ask me questions about the kid? Aren’t you supposed to be looking for him?
Mike: That’s what I’m doing.
Dimitri: I don’t know anything. I haven’t seen him. And Elena can take care of herself.
Act Five
Vicki watches as Henry lays the box containing Brendan’s remains on a chair near her desk.
Vicki: Were there statues at the nightclub?
Henry: Not that I noticed.
Vicki: Did you hear anything?
Henry: A lot of bodies, a lot of heartbeats. There was that one section we didn’t get into.
Vicki: The VIP section. I have a bad feeling Brendan’s not the only one.
Henry: We can go back and check it out if you like.
Vicki goes over and retrieves a digital camera from her purse.
Vicki: If there are, I want you to take pictures of them. Okay? See if we can ID them.
Henry: You’re not coming?
Vicki: I don’t think I’m welcome there. Why don’t you take Coreen? Besides, there’s something I have to do.
A little while later Coreen waits in the line at the club while Henry approaches cautiously, waiting for his opportunity to sneak in. Coreen looks at him out of the corner of her eye.
Dimitri: I.D.
Coreen: A compliment, thank you.
Dimitri: I.D. please, Miss.
Coreen: If you wanted my name and number, why didn’t you just ask, you big lug? Huh?
Dimitri: Strike three and you’re out. I.D.
Coreen sees Henry move inside and finally complies. Dimitri checks it and lets her pass.
Coreen: Thanks.
Meanwhile, Vicki is out in the middle of the woods, burying Brendan near some trees. As she does, Henry sweet talks his way past the young woman standing guard at the entrance to the VIP section and he and Coreen go upstairs and take pictures of several statues they find there. Dimitri comes up to the VIP section and Henry and Coreen beat a hasty retreat. Dimitri looks around suspiciously, certain he’d seen something.
As Vicki, Henry and Coreen are playing detective Mike is with Elena at her place.
Elena: I wish… we’d met a different way.
Mike: Yeah? Why is that?
Elena: Because you’re so honorable. You’re investigating this missing kid and maybe I’m part of the picture so you can’t…
Mike: I can’t what? Have a glass of wine? Too late.
Elena: No, that’s not what I’m thinking.
Elena leans into Mike and they kiss for a few moments before Mike pulls back.
Elena: You’re not attracted to me?
Mike: No, of course I am Elena. It’s just that, uh, I’m a little out of practice with um… the whole dating thing.
Elena: Well then, let’s practice.
As they lean in for another kiss Mike takes notice of Elena’s tattoo. They kiss for a few more moments and once again Mike pulls back.
Elena: Is it that woman with the glasses? The private detective?
Mike: Vicki? No.
Elena: Because when I said she’d been to the club you… reacted strangely.
Mike: She used to be a cop and uh… we used to be partners. But, uh… nothing more than that.
Elena: You don’t seem sure.
Mike: No, I’m sure.
Elena leans in again but Mike is definitely no longer in the mood. He grabs his coat from the back of the sofa.
Mike: Listen, maybe we should, uh, call it a night, huh?
Elena’s not ready for him to go and gets up to stop Mike from leaving.
Elena: you don’t… find me beautiful?
Mike: Elena I like you a lot. But, uh… a woman, who’s not happy with the way she looks, there’s no changing her mind so uh… if you need me to tell you what should be obvious…
Elena: Oh, no, no, no. No I don’t.
Mike: It’s uh… I’d like to see you again.
Elena: You will.
Mike: Okay. Good night.
Elena looks at herself in the mirror as Mike leaves.
Vicki and Coreen are in her office the next day, looking up the pictures of the statues on a facial recognition software program.
Vicki: Where did you get this software?
Coreen: It would be better if you pretended it wasn’t here.
Vicki: Does that say FBI?
Coreen: (ignoring Vicki) We have a match!
Vicki: Ryan Henderson. How did she get her hooks in you?
Coreen: I can’t find any way to turn the statues back. It’s nowhere in the mythology.
Vicki: Don’t all spells end when the witch dies?
Coreen: Spells and witches, Vicki, different strokes. But I did research the Medusa myth a little deeper. It’s actually a really horrible story.
Vicki: Obviously.
Coreen: No, for her. Medusa is this beautiful young woman whom Poseidon covets. He follows her to the temple of Athena one day and rapes her. Very standard operating procedures in the day. Then Athena gets mad about the desecration of her temple, blames Medusa, turns her into this hideous creature. The snakes, the stone gaze, all of it. She gets punished for being raped.
Vicki: So her nightclub is the temple? And anyone attracted to her beauty is punished.
Coreen: Considering what happened to her the first time…
Vicki: When I was a cop I met people who’d been through horrific abuse and violence and… then there would be ones who would turn it around and would use it against other people and cry victim at the same time. You know, it’s a choice and it’s a bad one. She doesn’t get to work out her issues by turning kids to stone.
Coreen: Are you gonna tell Mike about this?
Vicki: Mike doesn’t want to know.
Coreen: Maybe you should. If he’s getting busy with the bad lady…
Mike, meanwhile, is looking at the Fox City website at his desk and sees the tattoo Brendan posted of Elena on his page. He picks up the phone and calls Vicki.
Mike: Hey Coreen, its Mike. Is Vicki there? (pauses) All right. Uh, hey. You got a minute?
Mike heads over to Vicki’s office and Coreen prints out all the info on Medusa for him.
Mike: So you’re telling me that Elena is…
Coreen: Turning guys to stone as she re-lives her sexual trauma and seeks revenge? Yep, and there’s more.
Mike: Oh wait, wa… I’m still processing the first part.
Coreen: A couple of our statue dudes used to post on Fox City. Their last postings are within a week of their disappearances.
Elena comes to her nightclub and finds Vicki waiting for her with pictures from the statues in Elena’s VIP section.
Vicki: Hey! It’s Ryan Henderson. Remember him?
Elena: Excuse me.
Vicki: how about him? Hmm? Or him?
Elena: Now I know why Mike thinks you’re crazy.
Vicki: Okay, let’s see… Brendan Ledford. Come on. You must remember him. He was alive a couple days ago and now he’s dead.
Elena: Yeah, it’s very sad, struck down in his youth and beauty and all that.
Vicki: Yep. Like all of them. Like you. I know you had a rough go of it back then. Doesn’t excuse you now… Medusa.
Elena: You think you know something about me?
Vicki: Oh yeah, Mike? He doesn’t think I’m crazy, he knows I am.
Elena: That’s what bothers you, isn’t it? You pretend it’s about all these young men, but, uh, if he wasn’t sniffing around, would you be?
Vicki: Well here’s what you don’t understand about anyone who’s worked homicide. We can’t stop speaking for the dead.
Vicki leaves Elena standing at the entrance to her club. Elena stares after her for a moment and then heads inside. Vicki heads over to see Henry, who is contemplating his latest picture of Christina.
Henry: The mythical Medusa was slain. She died centuries ago.
Vicki: Yes, and when Perseus killed her, some of her spilled blood had the power to raise the dead, so why can’t she be self-resurrecting?
Henry: You have been reading.
Vicki: Yes, I’ve been reading, and I’m wondering, why are you stalling?
Henry: Motivation counts Ms. Nelson. Do you know why you’re doing this?
Vicki: That 22 year old kid did not deserve to be killed because he fell in love with a pretty face. You should understand that.
Henry: And Mike.
Vicki: Mike might be in danger. And I’m not okay with that.
Henry: If I do this, I’m doing this for you.
Henry turns away to go get ready but Vicki stops him.
Vicki: There’s one more thing.
Vicki walks over and grabs Henry’s sword as he looks on.
Act Six
Henry stops Vicki from leaving with the sword, trying to convince her to let him handle Medusa.
Henry: I could hold that.
Vicki: And let you do my dirty work? That would be the easy way out wouldn’t it? I’m doing this.
Henry: It’s not like killing a Wendigo or a Demon; she’s human in many respects.
Vicki: Just what she’s showing us.
Henry: She’s not going to be easy to kill.
Vicki: I know.
Henry: Then maybe this isn’t your job. Have you ever killed a human being?
Vicki: My third year on the force. This kid has got a bead on my partner; he’s ready to pull the trigger. And I tap him. He died almost instantly. And there’s pretty much not a day that goes by that I don’t think about that.
Henry: I don’t have that problem.
Vicki: I don’t believe you.
Henry: Sometimes I think you forget what I am.
Vicki: Sometimes I try to forget.
Henry puts his hand over Vicki’s on the sword that now rests by her leg.
Henry: I’m not going to be haunted by this.
Vicki: This is mine. Because I think you forget who you could be.
Vicki walks away and Henry turns to look at the portrait of his father before following her out.
Elena is staring at her collection of statues as Dimitri approaches her from behind.
Dimitri: I’m worried about that woman. And the cop.
Elena: Break the statues Dimitri, every last one of them and get rid of them.
Dimitri: What’s wrong with the statues?
Elena: They’re bloodstains… and I’m the knife.
Dimitri: No, that’s not true.
Elena: You think you know me because you’ve seen me change?
Dimitri: I do know you. And I’m not afraid.
Elena: Every one of those statues is a person, Dimitri. A shallow, beautiful person that tried to hurt me. And they’re still alive in there. You think you know me now?
Footsteps sound as Mike approaches and surprises Dimitri and Elena.
Mike: Hey. It’s quiet here tonight.
Dimitri: That’s ‘cause we’re closed.
Elena: It’s nice to see you.
Mike: You too. Listen, do you think there’s a chance we could, uh, find a place to talk?
Elena: Dimitri I’m starving. Can ya go down the street and get me somethin’?
Dimitri gives Elena an odd look but leaves anyway. Mike and Elena sit down at a nearby table.
Mike: You know, I was uh, wondering about something and I hope you don’t take offense. Last night, there was something in the way things were between us… the way you talked about your looks. Look, I really hope that I’m-I’m not out of line here but it-it made me think that maybe something happened to you in your past. That maybe somebody had hurt you. Because if that was the case, you know I think I could help you. I want to.
As Mike is talking Vicki and Henry enter the club and Henry points up stairs, having heard either Mike’s voice or Mike and Elena’s heart beats. Vicki heads up the stairs first, sword at the ready and Henry follows close behind.
Elena: He said he loved me but he didn’t even know me and then when I tried to leave, he… he grabbed me and he-he raped me.
Mike: (whispered) I’m sorry.
Elena: And… and-and… and then he went and he told everyone, and-and they said that I deserved it because I was vain and it was my fault.
Mike: So you were innocent and they blamed you.
Elena: Yeah, like-like I wanted to be violated. They destroyed me, they-they made me hideous.
Mike: No. You’re not.
Elena: I am. I’ve done things. You don’t know.
Mike: You can’t let these people just walk around like they own everything that they see. So you take care of them. This guy who raped you, these people who blamed you, they still around?
Elena: Yeah, they’re always around.
Mike: Have you found a way to take care of them? Because if you didn’t I can help with that.
Elena: No I found a way.
Mike: Good… good for you.
Mike turns to look at the statues behind him and Elena knows that something’s wrong.
Elena: What are you looking at? Hm?
Mike: Elena I’m here for you.
Elena: You think you know. You think you understand?
They are interrupted by Vicki and Henry’s entrance, Vicki has the sword raised above her head, ready to attack. Elena turns to look at Mike, angry now, and Mike gets up and backs away. Elena reaches up to her face as Mike reaches for his holster.
Elena: You’re all the same!
Mike: Take it easy.
Elena takes off her face and shows who she truly is, snakes and all. Mike turns to stone and Henry tries to use the distraction to sneak up on her but Elena turns on him, turning him to stone as well. Vicki uses the opportunity to attack with the sword and cuts off Elena’s head as she screams.
Once Elena is dead Mike, Henry and the other statues all return to normal. Vicki breathes a sigh of relief as Mike and Henry check to make sure they’re all there.
Henry: You had to do it.
Vicki: Doesn’t make it any easier.
Dimitri returns to the scene with food and notices what has happened. Mike, Henry and Vicki look down at Elena’s severed head, which has now turned to stone.
Mike: You guys okay?
Vicki: Yeah, you?
Mike: Yeah.
Dimitri runs to Elena and Vicki, Mike and Henry look on as he cries over her.
Later, Henry rolls up his painting of Christina as he ponders what’s happened. At the police station Mike approaches the case board and erases something over the picture of Brendan.
Out in the woods Vicki sits on a log next to where she’s buried Brendan and Mike approaches her from behind.
Mike: Hey.
Vicki: Hey.
Mike: I got your message. Am I intruding?
Vicki: No. I like it out here. It’s so quiet.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, it is.
Vicki: You know it was his manager that hired me? She loaned him six grand and she just wanted to get it back. Well, I found it.
Mike: Oh yeah?
Vicki: Brendan bought two tickets to Greece, one for him and one for Elena.
Mike: Ah.
Vicki: He really thought they had something.
Mike: Yeah. I guess people fall in love with the wrong person all the time, don’t they?
Vicki: Yes, they do.
Mike and Vicki continue to sit on the log and think about things. Vicki starts to reach out her hand towards Mike but thinks better of it.
End Stone Cold
