Act One
A manhole cover is moved aside on a darkened street in Toronto. Out of it climbs Vicki, followed closely by Mike. Vicki paces the street for a moment as Mike makes his way out of the sewer.
Vicki: Damn it!
Once Mike is standing in the street Vicki approaches him and delivers a left hook straight across Mike’s mouth.
Vicki: You stupid son of a bitch!
Mike: you through?
Vicki: Who was that guy? And what does he want with Henry?
Mike: He said that he could help Henry to ‘cure his urges’.
Vicki: Oh Mike… and you bought it?!
Mike: Yes, I bought it. Just like I bought every piece of your psycho voodoo nonsense ever since you hooked up with him.
Vicki: Oh… You know what? Maybe, just maybe if you weren’t obsessed with Henry and you just did your job…
Mike: HEY! I AM DOING MY JOB! And if you still wore the shield you would be doing exactly the same thing. Henry is a killer, plain and simple.
Vicki: He’s my partner. And now because of you I gotta go do what I do when my partner is in trouble.
Mike: You’ll never find him alone.
Vicki: Oh what? Now you wanna come help me find Henry?
Mike: No. No, I want Javier Mendoza, that’s who I want.
Vicki: Then from this point forward, what you know, I know. If you hold out on me I swear to god you will live to regret it.
Mike: Anything else?
Vicki: Until I find him, you’re my chauffeur.
Javier drags Henry’s limp body into a church and chains him up to a wooden St. Andrew’s cross. As he does he rips the wooden rosary off Henry’s wrist. After Henry is securely chained to the cross Javier takes a key and inserts it into the Illuminacion Del Sol and turns it, making Henry scream and move about in obvious pain. Once he has his prisoner secured Javier takes a good long look at him and Henry eyes Javier in response.
Henry: It’s been a long time, Monsignor.
Javier: You remember me. I’m flattered. (Holds up the rosary) Do you remember her?
At the sight of the rosary Henry growls and fights his chains, trying to lunge at Javier.
Javier: I stood upon the sand of the sea and I saw a beast rise out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon each horn a crown, and upon the heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast, which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were as a bear and his mouth as a lion and the dragon gave it his power. And upon one of the heads I saw that it was wounded unto death. And the deadly wound healed, and all the world wondered after the beast.
As he speaks Javier goes behind the cross and picks up a knife. Circling around to the front of the cross once again he uses the knife to cut Henry across the forehead and watches as the wound heals. Stepping back he lets Henry go.
Henry: What do you want? What do you want?
Javier: What I’ve always wanted, vampire… to save your immortal soul.
Javier watches as a greatly weakened Henry slumps against the cross.
Act Two
As Henry suffers under Javier’s care, Vicki and Mike return to her office. Vicki is calling in Coreen for help.
Vicki: Look, Coreen, just get down here as fast as you can. I’ll explain everything then. (Hangs up the phone and turns to Mike) If this guy had wanted him dead, why not just kill him in the sewer?
Mike: He wants to kill him somewhere else.
Vicki: Hey, that thing you slammed into his chest, I mea… it took him down fast. What the hell was it?
Mike: Uh, he… called it the um… the Illuminacion Del Sol. Uh… it looked like a sun. It had eight rays of light, I guess they were.
Vicki: Eight? Are you sure?
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, it reminded me of a… of a compass. It... It had a face on it and… I think it was made out of gold.
Vicki: Okay.
Mike: He… he said it … that it wouldn’t hurt him. It was just… it was just gonna weaken him.
Vicki: Okay, we’ll get Coreen on this as soon as she gets here.
Mike checks his watch and then moves off towards Vicki’s living area but Vicki stops him.
Vicki: Wa… Wait. What are you doing?
Mike: What? I’m just gonna clean up?
Vicki: No, you can clean up down at the station. I need you to pull everything you can on Javier Mendoza. I want CPIC, Interpol, Spanish police…
Mike: Okay, Vicki, I’m on it.
Vicki: All right.
Mike turns to the door and Vicki heads for her living area but Mike pulls her back this time.
Mike: Hey, Listen. We’re gonna find him.
Vicki: Yeah, we’d better.
Mike goes into the station to begin his search, not bothering to clean up. Kate approaches his desk with some messages.
Mike: Kate.
Kate: Javier Mendoza?
Mike: Yeah, he made himself out as a possible witness to the prostitute killing.
Kate: But now he’s a possible suspect?
Mike: Person of interest.
Kate: So, how’s Vicki factor into this?
Mike: She doesn’t.
Kate: So, why has she called you three times in the last half hour? (Mike winces as Kate hands him the messages) She says to turn your cell on.
Mike: (Turning on his cell) Yeah, this is a murky one. I needed somebody outside of the department to do some legwork for me.
Kate: You don’t have to explain it to me, Mike.
Mike: Crowley?
Kate: Warpath.
Mike: Listen, Kate, I need a favor. Can you just cover for me, for 24 hours? I just gotta see how this plays out.
Kate: I’ll do you one better… I’ll cover for you and I will baby sit this search while you go take a shower. Oh, and by the way, Dave got an ID on the dead pro. Amy Davidson. Her street name was Champagne.
Mike: Thanks Kate.
Kate gives Mike a smile as he heads off to clean up a little.
At Vicki’s office, she looks through a book as Coreen comes in. Coreen immediately starts explaining, thinking this is still about the Wendigo.
Coreen: I thought for sure the silver bullets would kill the Wendigo, even if the fire didn’t. Mike did use them didn’t he? ‘Cause I got the vibe off him that he didn’t buy that they would actually kill the Wendigo.
Vicki: Henry’s been kidnapped by some kind of lunatic with an anti-vampire weapon. I-I need you to find out everything you can on it as fast as you can.
Coreen: Okay, wait a minute… back up… Kidnapped? Lunatic? What are you talking about? Is Henry okay?
Vicki: I don’t know. He didn’t kill him right away so, yeah, there’s a chance he might still be alive.
Coreen: How did he even know you were there? The only people that knew you and Henry were in the sewer were me and… Mike.
Vicki: No that’s… It-It’s not important right now.
Coreen: No, I never should have said anything. Now Henry’s going to die and I’m the one who killed him.
Vicki: No… no he is not gonna die because we’re going to save him, all right?
Coreen: All right.
Vicki: (hands Coreen her notebook) This is everything I have.
Coreen: The Illuminacion Del Sol. It’s Spanish. I’ll start there.
Vicki: All right. If you can’t find anything out right away, call Dr. Sagara. She’ll know what to do.
Vicki goes to leave the office calling out to a concerned Coreen as she does.
Vicki: Call me when you have something.
Meanwhile, at the church, Javier begins his ‘Inquisition’ of Henry by reading the charges against him. Henry, still chained to the cross, laughs at him.
Javier: In the year of our Lord, 1742, to the ears of this judge, Monsignor Javier Mendoza, there comes a persistent public report that Englishman Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset, born 1519, died 1536…
***Begin Flashback***
A disheveled Henry is brought into a dungeon and thrown into a cell by Javier’s associates. He is muzzled and his hands are chained.
Javier: You are charged with inflicting vampirism and heresy against the faith and common good of this village.
As Javier reads the charges Henry breaks the chains and rips off his muzzle. His fangs are bared and his eyes are black as he growls at Mendoza.
Henry: How do you know who I am?
Javier: I will ask the questions in this court. How do you plead?
Henry: I’ve had no one here. You hold no authority over me, Priest.
Javier: We shall see.
Javier turns to leave and approaches a nun who is standing nearby, watching. He cups her cheek as he speaks to her.
Javier: Be careful with this one. He’s a spawn of the devil.
Maria: My faith in the Lord will protect me.
Henry watches pacing his cell, as Maria bends to kiss Javier’s ring.
***End Flashback***
Henry roars and once again lunges for Javier but is held back by the chains.
Javier: Save your strength Vampire. You will need it.
Henry yells and continues to pull at his chains as Javier leaves him.
Henry: JAVIER! JAVIER!
Vicki and Mike question one of the working girls about ‘Champagne’s’ disappearance.
Cassis: Don’t know her.
Vicki: Take a closer look, okay? ‘Cause she worked this stroll and she’s dead now.
Cassis is distracted by a man checking her out but walking slowly away. She leaves Vicki and Mike and walks towards him.
Cassis: Hey, honey, how you doing?
Mike follows her over and scares the guy off.
Mike: Yeah, you want to party?
Cassis: Do you mind? I need 1200 bucks to pay for my kid’s dental work, 800 to fix my transmission and I ain’t making jack with you two standing around here harassing me.
Vicki: You think this is harassment? No, harassment would be if I came down here every night that you were working and scared off all your potential customers.
Mike: Or I could arrest you for obstructing a homicide investigation, lose your paperwork and let you spend a fun-filled week in Metro West detention.
Vicki: Ooh, that is a good one. You know, there’s also the one…
Cassis: All right, all right.
Vicki holds up Champagne’s picture again and Cassis begins to talk.
Cassis: Yeah, I’ve seen her once or twice. Called herself ‘Champagne’. Nice enough but not exactly Einstein. No protection, no safe calls and she was stoned half the time she was working.
Vicki holds up Javier’s picture from Champagne’s crime scene.
Vicki: Did you ever see her with this guy?
Cassis: (looking uncomfortable) I never saw Champagne with him.
Vicki: You had a date with him.
Mike: What, you saw this guy?
Vicki: When did it happen?
Mike: Where was this?
Vicki: Where did he take you?
Mike: What was he driving?
Cassis: Okay, it was about a week ago. He picked me up in a cab, took me to an abandoned building. I thought he wanted what everyone wants.
Mike: What else?
Cassis: There was another woman in the basement, chained to the ceiling. When I told him anything weird was gonna cost extra, he grabs me, starts dragging me over to her, so I introduce him to my pocket protection.
Cassis holds up a can of pepper spray. Mike and Vicki put their hands up to ward her off.
Vicki: Whoa, whoa.
Mike: Easy, easy, easy.
Vicki: Why didn’t you tell anyone?
Cassis: She was trying to bite me. I thought she was in on the fun.
Mike: Can you describe the building?
Cassis: Some old church.
Vicki: Are you sure?
Cassis: I’ve been to church.
Mike: There can’t be that many empty churches around.
Vicki: Okay. You need to show us where he took you.
Cassis: I ain’t gotta show you nothing Princess.
Cassis begins to walk away but Vicki grabs her and slams her into the wall, twisting an arm behind her back.
Vicki: Okay, you have two choices and only one of them has a happy ending. You do know about happy endings right?
Cassis: Is this where you come in good cop?
Mike: Actually, she is the good cop.
Cassis: Okay.
Vicki lets her loose and Cassis flexes her arm a little.
Cassis: 75 an hour.
Vicki: You wanna get paid?
Cassis: I expect to get paid. Money talks or Cassis walks.
Vicki: If you are jerking us around I swear to god…
Cassis: That’s 200 an hour honey.
Mike: (taking Cassis’ arm) All right. Let’s go. Let’s go.
They get in Mike’s car and go look for the church.
Henry is hanging in his chains, remembering more about his earlier experiences with Javier.
***Begin Flashback***
Henry is watching Maria who, in turn, watches him warily from a few paces outside his cell.
Henry: Have you never seen royalty before?
Maria approaches Henry and he puts his fangs away and looks at her innocently.
Henry: What I need is some water. (Maria just looks at him) Water, please.
Maria: I serve only the Monsignor, and the Lord.
Henry: Perhaps a taste of your Lord’s grand compassion will fill my empty soul.
Maria: I warn you, do not attempt to take advantage of my charity.
Maria fills a ladle with water and Henry steps back from the bars, taking it and downing the water greedily as she watches. He hands the ladle back through the bars.
Henry: You are too kind.
Henry watches Maria and approaches the gates again, adopting his vampire voice.
Henry: Now open these gates.
Maria looks at him for a moment, considering what he says and then she looks away, gathering herself.
Maria: I was warned you were powerful, Devil. But God’s love is greater.
Henry watches, surprised, as Maria kneels before a makeshift altar and begins to pray in Latin.
***End Flashback***
Javier comes back, pulling Henry’s mind away from past memories as he does so. He is wheeling a specially made urn in front of him.
Javier: The accused has the opportunity to confess.
Henry: All right. All right I confess.
This gets Javier’s attention and he stops his preparations and gives Henry his full attention.
Henry: Forgive me, father, for I have sinned. (Lunging at Javier) I should have killed you four hundred years ago!
Javier gets out his key and tightens the Del Sol around Henry’s heart causing him to weaken and stop struggling against the chains holding him.
Javier: Having professed his innocence on all charges the accused leaves the judge with no choice but to proceed with the inquisition.
Javier goes to his urn and retrieves a small plastic hose and turns back towards Henry.
Henry: What are you… what are you doing? What are you doing?!
Javier pushes one end of the plastic hose into the Del Sol, telling Henry his options as he does so.
Javier: You will confess and you will die. The only choice left is where you spend eternity.
Blood begins flowing out of Henry and into the urn.
Henry: (whispered) No… no…
Act Three
Coreen stops Dr. Sagara at her office before she can lock up and leave for the night.
Coreen: Dr. Sagara.
Sagara: Oh… Coreen.
Coreen: Fennel. Vicki Nelson’s assistant.
Sagara: Yes, of course. You know, dear, it’s rather late. Could this wait until tomorrow?
Coreen: No, this is about Henry.
Sagara: What are you talking about?
Coreen: I’ve got to track down this Illuminacion Del Sol device and I can’t find references to it in any Spanish mythology text. I’ve checked everything. Galican, Historian, Catolyn, even Bass, so I thought maybe it has a basis in Roman mythology.
Sagara is clearly confused and she grabs Coreen by the arms and stops her babbling, forcing her to take a breath.
Sagara: Slow down, please slow down. What does this have to do with Henry?
Henry has collapsed from the blood loss and is now lying on the floor in front of the St. Andrew’s cross. Javier appears to have loosened his chains just enough so that he can kneel on the floor. In a cage just out of reach is a rat and Henry, half starved, tries to reach it. Javier puts a foot on the top of the cage and pushes it towards Henry.
Javier: I thought you might be hungry.
Henry rips open the cage and takes out the rat. As he prepares to bite it Javier taunts him.
Javier: Come on Vampire, eat. You’re getting weak, you need your strength.
This stops Henry from biting the rat and he sets it down, letting it go.
Javier: One small act of mercy won’t impress God.
Henry: God loves mercy.
Javier: For those who deserve it.
Javier goes behind Henry and tightens up the chains, pulling him upright against the cross again. He comes back in front of Henry and lights a blow torch.
***Begin Flashback***
Back during his first inquisition Henry is chained to the rack as Javier heats up a hot poker. Maria is also in the room and appears to be kneeling in prayer as Javier tries to torture Henry into confessing.
Javier: The evidence against you is compelling.
As Javier approaches with the poker Henry struggles, trying to free himself of the chains.
Javier: Confess freely and save your immortal soul. Confess!
As Javier presses the hot poker against Henry’s hand he yells in pain and looks at Maria. His screams have drawn her attention and she looks at him. He begins to pray reaching out his burned hand towards her.
Henry: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Marie turns away and looks heavenward, beginning to pray again as well.
***End Flashback***
Henry, now in a ripped shirt with burn marks on his right shoulder and upper arms, slumps against the cross as we see the lit blow torch again.
Javier: Confess.
Meanwhile, Vicki and Mike arrive at the abandoned church Cassis directed them to. Vicki gets out and opens Cassis’ door, letting her out as well. Cassis points to where Javier took her in.
Cassis: This is the place. We went around that way.
Vicki: Show us.
Cassis: The deal was to get you to the church, there’s no guided tour.
Cassis holds out her hands for the money she was promised and Vicki looks at Mike.
Vicki: Pay her.
Mike: Why? You were the one who said you’d pay her.
Vicki: I don’t have that kind of money on me.
Mike: Oh, and I do?
Vicki: You should.
Mike: What are you talking about?
Cassis: I have an idea. Pay me now and fight about this all you want when you get home.
Mike: Oh, listen sweet heart; we are so not a couple.
Cassis: Sure you’re not.
Vicki: We’re not.
Mike: All right, fine. I suppose a receipt is completely out of the question?
Cassis just looks at him like he’s nuts and Mike gets out the cash and pays her off. She walks away, leaving Vicki and Mike alone on the sidewalk. They watch for a moment before Mike goes to his trunk and opens it.
Mike: I guess there’s no point in telling you to stay behind?
He gets out a shotgun and Vicki takes an industrial sized flashlight.
Mike: Right.
Mike closes the trunk and they head off into the church.
Mike: Come on, the sun’s almost up.
Back at Javier’s he runs his hands over the burns on Henry’s shoulder and stomach.
Javier: Your wounds don’t heal so quickly now. Has the devil abandoned you?
Henry: Why don’t you ask him yourself?
Javier presses more firmly on the wound in Henry’s stomach, causing him to cry out in pain.
Javier: You are nothing if not tenacious but you will break. You all break.
Javier opens a laptop and shows Henry a video of Delphine’s ‘confession’.
Javier: The witness will give their name…
Henry: Delphine.
Javier: and the year of their birth and death.
Delphine: Delphine Guillaume, born 1918, died 1944.
Javier: And how did you come to be in this state of purgatory?
Delphine: I… I was murdered by a vampire.
Henry: NO!
Henry watches, saddened at seeing Delphine in chains and with a similar Illuminacion Del Sol in her chest. At Delphine’s words Henry pulls on his chains, clearly in pain at hearing her ‘confession’.
Delphine: Who infected me with his disease.
Javier: Unburden your soul, child, and give me his name. Atone for your sins.
Henry cries as Javier crosses around and stands behind Delphine, playing with the Del Sol and causing her more pain as she tells him who turned her.
Delphine: Henry Fitzroy. Forgive me.
Javier: He will, my dear. All in good time.
Henry: I forgive you. I forgive you.
Javier closes his computer and looks at Henry triumphantly.
Henry: What have you done to her?
Javier: She is at peace now.
Henry: How many others did you kill to get to me?
Javier: Don’t flatter yourself. She was a monster.
Henry: She was an artist, a teacher, innocent! And you condemned her.
Javier: She gave up her innocence when she surrendered herself to you.
Henry: No!
Javier: Through her confession she spared herself the flames of hell.
Henry: Hell… hell couldn’t be worse than this.
Henry spits on Javier and the inquisitor retaliates, punching Henry in the face and then throwing his elbow into Henry’s midsection.
Mike breaks into a room in the church with the butt of his shotgun and finds Delphine, unconscious, still chained to the ceiling.
Act Four
Javier approaches Henry, who is still attached to the cross, now semi-conscious. He has a large notebook in his hands.
Javier: No one escapes the Lord’s justice.
He throws down the now dead rat, which has been caught by a mousetrap. At the scent of blood Henry begins to growl and breathe heavily, hungry for nourishment.
At the abandoned church Mike checks Delphine’s neck for signs of life.
Mike: There’s no pulse.
At Mike words Delphine wakens, causing Mike to jump back and cock his shotgun.
Delphine: Help me.
Vicki: It’s the woman Henry turned, Delphine. (To Delphine) Where’s Javier Mendoza?
Delphine: Feed me.
Delphine is raspy voiced, barely able to breathe as she pleads. Vicki turns to look at Mike who is still holding his gun at the ready on Delphine.
Delphine: Feed me.
Vicki takes out a razor as Mike protests.
Mike: Aww come on Vicki you’re not gonna do it, look…
Vicki: We need her!
Vicki cuts her hand with the razor and holds it up to Delphine’s mouth, letting some blood flow into her mouth.
Vicki: (whispered) Aw Jeez…
Delphine: More…
Vicki: No, not until you answer my questions. Where’s Javier?
Delphine: Gone.
Vicki: What does he want with Henry?
Delphine: Henry… forgive me.
Vicki’s questioning is interrupted by a series of beeps coming from the direction of the window. Mike turns to look at it.
Mike: Uh… Vicki.
The window opens automatically bathing the room and Delphine in the morning sun. Delphine screams and catches fire as Mike and Vicki look on in horror. In a few small seconds she is reduced to a pile of bone and ash.
Coreen is still with Dr. Sagara researching the Illuminacion Del Sol. She is clearly frustrated as she continues to look through the texts. Opening one titled ‘The Great Goddess’ she finds the following inscription inside the cover. ‘For your collection. Love, Henry’.
Smiling she gets up and walks towards the Dr.
Coreen: Dr. Sagara, how long have you known Henry?
Sagara takes the book and looks at it before setting it aside, preoccupied with trying to save her friend.
Sagara: We’re missing something here. What is it? Eight rays? Are you sure?
Coreen: Yeah.
Sagara: The number eight had no special meaning to the Aztecs.
Coreen: It’s a lucky number in Chinese culture.
Sagara writes the number 8 on a paper easel and then she writes the number 8 on its side for the infinity symbol.
Coreen: Infinity? Immortality! It’s Chinese.
Sagara smiles and points at the symbol with her marker and then she and Coreen get back to work.
Vicki and Mike are investigating the church for signs of Mendoza.
Vicki: He left in a hurry.
Vicki sifts through Mendoza’s papers and finds another photograph of her, Mike and Henry at the Cobb school. She picks it up and looks at it for a moment.
Vicki: He had our number. I wish we had his.
Mike: Yeah. Nobody should have to die like that.
Vicki: She wasn’t alive, remember?
Mike: No, you know what I mean. To leave somebody… anybody, vulnerable, alone like that. It’s just evil.
Vicki turns over a plastic plant holder of some kind and reads the inscription as Mike picks up a golden cup and looks at it.
Vicki: Hollenbeck Nurseries. Doesn’t really strike me like the kind of guy who’d have a hobby.
Mike sniffs the cup and recoils from the foul smell
Mike: Oh… whoo.
Vicki: What is that?
Mike: I don’t know. Maybe Mohadevan can take a look at this.
Vicki and Mike go back to the station to get Mohadevan’s help and check on Kate’s progress with the Mendoza search.
Mike: (On the phone) Yeah we’re in the briefing room. Okay. (Hangs up) Kate’s on her way.
Vicki: Remember the last time we were here?
Mike: We used to break our backs in these chairs.
Vicki: We gave Mohadevan a four star case to the front of the line.
Mike: Oh, you remember that drug dealer who had tha-that bag taped over his head?
Vicki: Oh yeah, you thought it was a premeditated hit.
Mike: You thought it was a crime of passion.
Vicki: Yeah, and she comes in and it’s…
Mike and Vicki: Erotic asphyxiation.
Kate enters with a file, a little uncomfortable it appears.
Kate: Mike. Vicki. They still had coffee over at sex crimes.
Mike: Oh, the best in the building.
Kate: The computer spat back boopkus on your guy.
Vicki: (Grabbing the file) What? No criminal record?
Kate: No record at all. Not even an alias. So I googled the name to see if it had any significance. Turns out Javier Mendoza was a Grand Inquisitor during the Spanish Inquisition. He specialized in encouraging confession out of witches.
Mike: Oh. Uh, thanks Kate. I owe you one for this.
Kate: You owe me more than that. (Turning to leave) And get some rest. You look like hell.
Mike: Thank you. I appreciate that.
Kate leaves and Mike and Vicki exchange a look.
Mike: What?
Vicki: What?
Mohadevan: (As she enters) The plant is Jiogulan. It is revered by the Chinese as an immortality herb.
Mike: Mm, and, uh, how about the cup?
Mohadevan: A mixture of the herb and blood.
Vicki: Amy Davidson’s blood?
Mohadevan: No, she was O negative. This is B positive. There are some other unique properties in this mixture. It will take more tests to isolate them.
Mike and Vicki: Vampire.
Mohadevan: You’ll never read that in my report. Now if you’ll excuse me, there are other cases that require my attention.
Vicki: Thank you.
Mike: Yeah, thanks doc.
Vicki: Immortality herb. Spanish Inquisitor. What if this guy isn’t a fan of Javier Mendoza? What if he is Javier Mendoza?
Mike: Oh, if this guy is Javier Mendoza then he’s over 300 years old.
Vicki: Maybe he’s a vampire.
Mike: No, he can’t be. We saw him in the day time.
Vicki: Vampire blood. Jiogulan.
Mike: This guy’s juicing vampires to stay alive.
Vicki: That means Henry might not be dead yet.
Mike and Vicki leave the station and head to Vicki’s office. She calls Hollenbeck Nurseries for more information on the herb.
Vicki: (hanging up the phone) Hollenbeck Nurseries supplied Jiogulan to five different Chinese herbalists. The upside is they’re all on Spedina.
Mike: So we’re no closer than we were twelve hours ago.
Vicki: No, we have solved cases with a whole hell of a lot less than this. All right what do we have?
Mike: All right we know that his name is Spanish.
Vicki: We know that he is or was connected to the Inquisition.
Mike: His last hideout was in a church.
Vicki: His last hideout was in a church within walking distance to Chinatown.
Vicki gets out a map and goes over to her lighted table, spreading out the map and plotting some locations on it as they brainstorm
Vicki: Okay, Chinatown. This is where we found the vampire.
Mike: All right, this is where we picked up Cassis. This is where we found Amy Davidson’s body. That is a pretty small comfort zone to be working in.
Vicki: He’s conducting his own little Inquisition. The guy’s hooked on ritual. So, holy ground is a part of that ritual.
Mike: He’s hiding out in another church.
At Javier’s hideout, he gets ready to bleed Henry again. Henry’s mouth is bloody and his vampire eyes and fangs are in full view, possibly from having drunk the blood of the dead rat.
Henry: What Faustian bargain did you make?
Javier: Rest assured, vampire, there is no deal with the devil. I prayed to the Lord for justice and he granted me the capture of a wretched soul who’d immersed himself in the dark arts of the east. At first he was reluctant to share with me his knowledge of unnatural longevity. But in time he came to find my arguments persuasive.
Javier walks back over to his special urn. As he does he begins coughing. Henry watches as Javier pours some herbs into the blood he’s drained from Henry and chants in Latin. Henry begins to laugh as he watches Javier brew his special drink.
Henry: Don’t think you can immerse yourself in darkness and emerge unscathed.
Javier ignores him as he pours himself a drink, chanting in Latin all the while.
Henry: You’re the vampire.
Javier: Amen.
Javier drinks as Henry looks on.
Act Five
Mike and Vicki are still searching abandoned churches but so far having little luck.
Mike: Okay, we’ve got four more churches to go.
Vicki: All right, we should split up, cover more ground.
Mike: No, we go together, okay? This guy’s armed and insane.
Vicki: Same old Saturday night.
Mike: No, Vicki, I’m serious okay? Listen ever since you got those marks on you, you’ve been acting like you’re somehow invincible. Guess what? You’re not.
Vicki: No, but I think they might be saving me for something else.
Mike: It’s not exactly reassuring.
Vicki: I have no choice right now, all right? I have to play the hand that’s been dealt.
Mike: Vicki, you will always have a choice. Remember that.
Vicki: We split up. Cover more ground.
Mike: And if one of us finds him?
Vicki: We call the other one.
Mike: You’ll wait for me?
Vicki: Yeah, I’ll wait for you.
Mike: Vicki…
Vicki: Mike! I said I’d call.
Mike watches Vicki walk away from him.
Javier is still trying to torture a confession out of a semi-conscious Henry, this time using a whip.
Javier: End your suffering, my son. Smite the beast that corrupts your soul!
Javier wields the whip viciously and Henry flashes back to his previous imprisonment once again.
***Begin Flashback***
Henry is lying on the floor of his cell, weakly calling out for Maria.
Henry: Maria, please!
Maria: Quiet! The Monsignor will hear you.
Maria approaches the cell and Henry staggers to his feet, bracing himself against the wall.
Henry: I am a man.
Maria: You are vampiro! Evil. You kill.
Henry: And I paint… I dance… I bleed…
Maria: You’ve been sent to test my faith.
Henry lunges for Maria, grabbing her arm and making her gasp.
Henry: Your faith… is about mercy. To have you in his grasp. To let you go. What devil is that foolish?
Maria: Another trick.
Henry: If I do not scream I am being protected by the devil. If I do, it is a trick. I have had enough of your judgment for one day.
Maria holds out her rosary to Henry
Maria: Take this. And prove yourself.
Henry takes the rosary from her and performs the Catholic crossing.
Henry: In Nomini Patri, et Fili, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Henry kisses the rosary and hands it back to Maria. She takes it and opens his cell. He comes out and takes her by the arms, then runs a hand over her hair.
Henry: Thank you. Thank you.
Maria smiles at him. Henry gives into his hunger and bites her, draining her of blood.
Maria: NO!
Realizing how far he’s gone he picks Maria up and carries her to the altar. Biting his wrist he gives her his blood.
Henry: Drink! Drink my blood and you’ll live.
***End Flashback***
In the present Javier continues his vicious whipping of Henry.
Javier: Confess your unholy nature and pray for divine forgiveness.
Henry: Y-You first
In Dr. Sagara’s office Coreen has found something of use.
Coreen: It’s not much but I found a legend of a Chinese warlord who’s only daughter committed suicide and returned as Chiang Shih, that’s a Chinese vampire. She wrought terrible destruction across the land but the warlord refused to see her die a second time. He ordered the wisest of his Daoist priests to tame her vicious ways. The priest created an artificial sun to control her, but discovered …
Coreen trails off as the camera pans to a picture of the Illuminacion Del Sol.
Coreen: (whispered) Oh my god.
Vicki is circling around the back of an abandoned church, trying to find a way in. She comes across more planters from Hollenbeck Nurseries and pushes her way through the gate and enters the church. Her cell phone rings as she does so and as she goes to answer it she’s grabbed and drops her flashlight in the struggle.
On the other end of the phone is Mike.
Mike: Come on, come on.
Mike gets Vicki’s voicemail.
Vicki’s Voice: Hey this is Vicki, sorry I missed you. Leave me a message and I’ll call you back.
Mike: Vicki it’s me. Call me.
Vicki wakes up in a darkened room, tied to a chair. She shakes her head.
Vicki: Ooh, bad idea.
She tries to look around but her glasses are gone and she can’t see anything.
Vicki: Henry?
Henry, his chains having been loosened again, lunges at her but is stopped before he can get there.
Vicki: HENRY! NO!
Henry: Vicki. Vicki.
Vicki: Oh god, what has he done to you?
Javier: Revealed his true nature. Behold the beast.
Henry, already in full vampire face, growls loudly at Javier causing Vicki to scream. Javier pushes Vicki’s chair a little closer to Henry’s reach.
Javier: Now do you see?
As Vicki gets closer to Henry, he backs away as far as the cross will allow him.
Henry: No, no, no.
Vicki: We’re gonna get you out of here.
Javier: You know what I want vampire. Confess. Confess your sins.
Henry: What sins? Tell me.
Javier: You killed her. You killed Maria.
Henry: We both know what happened. (Stands up) I came for her that night.
As Henry speaks we again see a flashback to his first encounter with Javier.
Henry: I was too late to save her. I heard the words that came out of her mouth. Her first words as a newborn.
*** Begin Flashback***
Javier enters the cell where Maria lies and stands beside her. She wakens and looks at Javier, a smile on her face.
Maria: My love
Javier raises a stake and mallet and kills her as she screams.
***End Flashback***
Javier: It was a trick. A trap set by the devil to ensnare me.
Henry: The devil had nothing to do with it. She only sought to embrace you, to love you.
Javier: In God’s eyes, she was cursed! I saved her soul!
Henry: You could have had her for all eternity, if not for you… your fanaticism.
Javier: I freed her!
Henry: Murderer.
Javier: Liar!
Javier pushes Vicki closer again to Henry.
Vicki: You’re a monster!
Javier: I’ll show you who the true monster is!
Javier reaches down and pulls the bloody bandage from Vicki’s hand and tosses it at Henry
Javier: Does the smell of blood make you happy, vampire? Your main course is right here.
Henry yells and tosses the bandage away violently.
Henry: No, no, no, no, no!
Vicki: (crying) Henry.
Henry: (whispered) I confess. I confess. I confess…
Act Six
In Sagara’s office, Coreen’s phone rings and she immediately answers.
Coreen: Vicki?
Mike: Coreen, it’s me. Where is she?
Coreen: I don’t know; she hasn’t called.
Coreen puts Mike on speaker with her and Dr. Sagara.
Mike: We split up an hour ago to check out churches. She should have called back by now. I’m gonna go retrace her steps.
Coreen: Wait. Mike we found something out about the device he’s using on Henry. It’s some kind of freaky gadget that was created by a Daoist monk to steal a vampire’s immortality.
Sagara: How could you do this to him?
Mike: Listen, I’m gonna get him back. What do I need to know about this thing?
Coreen: There’s a special key that removes it. But we have to be careful. Turn it clockwise, it deactivates the device. Counterclockwise? It destroys the heart.
Mike: Great, so where is this key?
Sagara: Hopefully he keeps it close to him.
Mike: Yeah let’s hope. All right, I’ll call you when I find something.
Back at the church Henry is confessing as Vicki and Javier look on.
Henry: Then I turned her… into a creature like me…
Vicki: Henry, don’t.
Javier: A foul beast.
Henry: A foul beast.
Javier: Your soul is black. The penance for your sins is death.
As Javier talks Vicki slips her razor out of her pocket and starts to cut the rope tying her to the chair.
Henry: Let her go.
Javier: Out of the question. Your confession must be given in good faith and with a clear conscience. It would be remiss of me to accept a statement made under duress.
Outside the church Mike looks for a way in. He has his shotgun at the ready. Having no luck at the front door he crosses around the back, the same way Vicki took when she went in.
Javier: After you’ve eaten we will talk again.
Vicki: How long is that gonna be huh? Ten years? A hundred years? How long do you keep them like this?
Javier: I am not Fitzroy’s captor. When his heart truly seeks salvation, he will find the key to his freedom.
Vicki: Oh, and of course you’re the only one who can tell when he’s reached that stage.
Javier: I’m only a vessel of the Lord’s will. He will decide.
Vicki: What a convenient argument. It doesn’t justify murder.
Javier: You of all people should know that no one is innocent.
Javier pushes her chair closer and Henry reacts to the scent of her blood.
Javier: Bon appetite, vampire.
Javier leaves Henry and Vicki alone together. Henry appears to be running on instinct, no longer able to control his urges.
Vicki: Henry…
Henry is getting up as Vicki continues to fight with the ropes.
Henry: Forgive me, I can’t help myself.
Vicki: Just give me a chance to find a way out of here before you make any rash decisions.
Henry lunges at Vicki and she rolls backward out of the chair, just managing to cut the ropes in time. She breaks the chair and holds up one of the legs as a stake, brandishing it as a weapon as Henry struggles to break out of the chains that hold him.
Vicki: HENRY! HENRY, DON’T MAKE ME!
Henry breaks one of the chains holding him and Vicki runs for the door as he breaks the other one. She holds the stake at the ready, turning to look back at the room in fear.
Outside, Javier watches for a moment through the window in the door and turns away, only to run into Mike, holding his shotgun.
Mike: Don’t… move.
Javier: Detective.
Mike: Hands behind your head. (Javier complies) The key, where is it?
Javier: In a safe place.
Mike cocks his shotgun
Mike: I won’t ask you again.
Javier: You know my cause is just, you won’t kill me.
Mike: No, I won’t kill you.
Mike smacks Javier across the face with the butt of the gun and Javier drops like a stone, the key now visible in his limp hand. Mike grabs it and looks at it as Vicki appears in the window and bangs on the door.
Vicki: Mike!
Mike: Vicki!
Vicki turns to look back into the room and is startled to see two empty chains attached to the cross. Turning back she bangs on the door again.
Vicki: (murmured) Oh jeez. (Louder) Mike, get me out of here!
Henry is stalking her and she sees him and raises the stake again to defend herself.
Vicki: MIKE!
Mike starts kicking at the door, trying to get it open as Henry continues to stalk Vicki.
Mike bursts in just as Henry grabs Vicki.
Mike: NO!
Lunging for them, Mike pushes Vicki out of the way and she falls. Henry takes the opportunity to go for Mike’s throat and begins drinking his blood.
Mike: SON OF A BITCH!
Vicki gets up and tries to pull Henry off Mike.
Vicki: Henry! Please, please Henry, you’re killing him. You’re killing him. Henry, stop! You’re killing him! Henry, you’re killing him!
Henry finally hears Vicki and lets her pull his mouth away from Mike.
Vicki: Please.
Henry lets go of Mike and he falls heavily. Vicki wipes some of the blood away from Henry’s mouth
Vicki: Oh, please…
Vicki runs to Mike’s aid as Henry falls to his knees. She tries to stop Mike’s bleeding by putting a hand to his wound.
Vicki: No. Mike.
Mike: Th-the key.
Vicki: Wha?
Mike: Turn it.
Vicki grabs the key and goes over to Henry.
Vicki: Okay.
Mike: Clockwise.
Vicki releases the device and throws it aside as Henry takes a deep, raspy breath, beginning to recover a little from his ordeal. Vicki immediately goes back to Mike and tries to tend to his bite wound. She looks back at Henry as she does so.
Vicki: Are you okay?
Henry: I will be.
Vicki pulls Mike’s head into her lap as Henry gets up and walks out of the room.
Vicki: Mike? Mike, you okay?
Mike: God, that hurts.
Vicki: Are you crazy? I mean you could have gotten yourself killed.
Mike: Well, you’re welcome.
Henry, meanwhile, goes out into the hall and confronts Javier, still in full fangs and dark eyes.
Henry: Good evening, Monsignor. It’s time to repent.
Grabbing Javier by the back of his collar he drags him down the hall as he says grace.
Henry: Bless us, oh Lord and these thy gifts for which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Back in the room Vicki still cradles Mike’s head in her lap.
Vicki: Oh god, Mike.
Mike: I’ll be fine.
They hear a loud, distant scream as Henry exacts his revenge. Vicki helps Mike up.
Vicki: Let’s go.
Vicki helps Mike up and out the door. They meet a fully recovered Henry in the hallway. He waits for them as he wipes his mouth.
Henry: It’s almost dawn.
Mike: We really need to talk about your drinking problem.
Henry: Clearly I stopped too soon.
Mike falls against Henry as Vicki looks on, disturbed by the night’s events. She pushes Mike towards Henry and begins to feel for something in her pocket.
Vicki: Uh, you uh, you go ahead.
Henry and Mike look warily at each other and then Mike puts a cautious arm around Henry’s neck, letting him lead him out the door. Henry looks back for a moment at Vicki as he holds Mike up and helps him walk.
Vicki goes back to the room, checking over her shoulder to make sure Henry and Mike are leaving. In the room she picks up the Illuminacion Del Sol and the key and removes pieces of Henry’s shirt from it before pocketing the device in her coat pocket and leaving the church.
