Act One

Mike and Vicki are in her office. Mike is relaxing with a drink as Vicki works on a case.

Vicki: Now, where would you go if you were an accountant who had just stolen 15 million dollars?

Mike: 15 million, where wouldn’t I go?

Vicki: Well he’s routed the money through the Turks and Caicos.

Mike: Well, follow the money.

Vicki: Yeah – Or follow the phone bill. Let’s see… yep, twenty calls to a number in Paris from his cell phone.

Mike: Girlfriend?

Vicki: Sylvie Girard, 325 Rue Montaigne. Man, what did we do in the days before reverse directories?

Mike: And another case solved.

Vicki: Yes, and a potential payday. My landlord has called me three times this week.

Mike: Oh, so I take it I’m buying dinner tonight.

Vicki: Look at you.  You just solved a mystery too.

Mike: (Laughs) Yes, look at me. Uh, listen, I was wondering what, uh, your weekend is looking like?

Vicki: Uh, besides tracking down the accountant that’s blown all of my client’s money on Champs Elysees, not much. You have a better offer?

Mike: Well, it’s, uh, Dylan’s birthday.

Vicki: No way!

Mike: MmHmm.

Vicki: Huh. How old is he now, like seven?

Mike: No, eight. Can you believe it?

Vicki: Wow. Hm… Do you think that might be kind of weird though?

Mike: Actually, he asked if I could bring Aunt Vicki to the party. I was at Molly’s the other day and I guess he, uh, he over heard me talking about you.

Vicki: What exactly were you talking about?

Mike: I don’t know. That, uh, I was seeing you again, you know?

Vicki: That you were seeing me… or that you were seeing me?

Mike: I don’t know. That, um, I was seeing you … around. And Molly was happy. She always did like you.

Vicki: Hmm. I’m just … I’m so close on this accountant thing. I think I should probably, you know, stay in and follow it through.

Mike: Oh absolutely. I mean, you gotta make hay. I totally get that.

Vicki: But um… we’re still on for dinner though right?

Mike: Damn right we are.

Vicki: Great.

Outside of town at some sort of encampment a woman stands by the fire trying to get warm. As she sees one her friends pass by she calls out to her.

Annie: Turkey soup at the mission tomorrow, Francine.

Francine: Awww, too damn salty. Every time. They can keep their damn salty soup.

Francine moves by Annie and over to her tent which is a little ways away from the rest of the group. She’s being hunted through the woods. We get the perspective of the hunter who seems to key in on her heat signature. Francine realizes someone’s watching her.

Francine: Who’s there? Annie? Is that you?

Not seeing anyone, Francine goes back to searching through her belongings for something and we again see the scene from the perspective of the hunter who closes in on and attacks Francine. At the fire, everyone including Annie hears Francine screams. Annie walks a little away from the group and looks into the woods and then up at the moon, frightened.

Act Two

Annie comes to see her old “friend” Vicki at her office about Francine’s disappearance. However, Vicki’s out at the moment on a coffee run. Coreen leaves her vigil at the front door to rescue some of her glass sculptures from Annie’s curious hands.

Coreen: Oh, could you put that down please? It’s from a friend.

Annie: Swarovski?

Coreen: I think so.

Annie: I used to sell these things.

Coreen: Ms. Nelson should be back really soon. Can I get you a coffee?

Annie watches as Vicki comes through the door, coffee in hand. Vicki looks at her for a moment before recognition hits.

Vicki: Hey I know you. This is the panhandle Queen of Yonge and Carlton.

Annie: And you were the only decent cop on that beat. I work Yorkville now. Less coins, more bills.

Vicki: Good stuff.

Annie: Annie Howard. Word on the street is you went private. I looked you up.

Vicki: Well, I hate to break this to you but if you’re going door to door, you may have picked the wrong door.

Annie: My friend Francine was killed last night. People just keep getting killed.

Vicki: Whoa, whoa. How-how do you know they’re… they’re, they’re being killed?

Annie: Some of them have just disappeared. And … last night I heard Francine scream and then she was gone, too.

Vicki: How many people are we talking about here?

Annie: Frankie, Tyrell and Linda. Uh, four at least, maybe more.

Vicki: Annie, we have to call the police.

Annie: You were a cop. You know that they’re not going to listen to us! Maybe they’ll listen to you. Vicki, I don’t know which one of us is going to be next. I can pay you.

Vicki: No, no…

Annie: A bunch of us chipped in. I’ve got almost a hundred bucks.

Vicki: That’s okay. I’ll open an account. Really, this…

Vicki looks helplessly at Coreen, who steps forward to take the money.

Coreen: Do you want me to take it? Let me.

Vicki: Okay, okay great. That’s, that’s great.

Coreen: I got it.

Vicki: All right. Take a… take a big breath.

Annie takes a moment to take a deep breath and calm down.

Vicki: And we’re just gonna start from the beginning, all right?

Meanwhile, Mike’s been called to a homicide scene. A working girl’s been murdered. Dave updates him as Mike approaches the body.

Mike: Hey.

Dave: Hey. So um… looks like she was a working girl. And you’re gonna love this.

Mike: Yeah? No ID?

Dave: Better. No Blood… (At Mike’s shocked look) Oh yeah, baby. Looks like return of the Vampire Killer on both screens.

Mike crouches down to get a better look at the victim.

Mike: Look, it can’t be the same guy. All the other vics, they had their throats ripped open. But this…

Dave: Maybe he’s getting neater. Everything pointed to that Norman Bridewell dude, right? I mean, we never did get our hands on him.

Mike: Crowley heard about this?

Dave: Oh yeah, she’s got all the dogs out on this one. All hands on deck.

Mike: (sighs) Yeah, like that’ll help.

Mike catches sight of a blond man dressed all in black taking a particular interest in the crime scene from behind the tape. He steps closer to Dave, drawing his attention to the onlooker.

Mike: Listen, Dave, you see that guy over there? He look like a local to you?

Dave: Seems a little upscale for this ‘hood. How’s about we go say hello.

Mike: Yeah.

Mike approaches the photographer and turns him toward the crowd.

Mike: Listen; make sure you get a photo of this guy, right?

Mike attempts to point out the man in black but he’s mysteriously disappeared and Mike can’t find him anywhere in the crowd now.

Photographer: Don’t worry about it. I’ve been taking pictures for the last half hour.

Mike continues to look through the crowd, stunned by the man’s disappearance.

Vicki, meanwhile, accompanies Annie back to the encampment.

Vicki: She lived here?

Annie: Naw. Francine didn’t like crowds. Actually, she didn’t like individuals either. Not a people person.

Annie leads Vicki towards Francine’s tent which is off by itself, away from the main encampment.

Vicki: Did you notice anyone new around the park lately? Anybody on or off their meds?

Annie: Aww, people are in and out. And-and on and off.

Vicki: What about anyone who might have had a specific beef with her?

Annie: Not with her. Or any of the others. It’s just someone who likes hurting people.

Vicki: Where’s her stuff?

Annie: She had some good stuff man. Her sleeping bag was almost new.

Vicki: Annie if something happened to her that’s evidence.

Annie: Nobody killed her for it, if that’s what you’re getting at.

Vicki: Annie, look, I believe you, all right? I just need some kind of proof that someone took her.

Vicki sees something on the ground leading away from Francine’s tent.

Vicki: What’s this? It looks like drag marks.

Vicki follows them to a sewer grate. She and Annie go down to take a closer look and find blood. Annie sees something else a little deeper inside the sewer.

Annie: That’s Francine’s bag.

Vicki: Oh… that’s the kind of evidence I mean. (Stops Annie from picking it up) No! Don’t touch that. You don’t want your fingerprints on that.

Fresh from his crime scene, Mike stalks into the squad room and approaches his desk. He finds Crowley there, looking through his file on Henry.

Mike: Looking for something?

Crowley: I am surprised that you have time to go digging through cold cases.

Mike: There could be a connection to our case.

Crowley: What, you think someone broke out of the retirement home to kill a working girl?

Mike: There are similarities with all of this and our girl, okay? It could be a copycat. It-it could be one of those ongoing ritualistic things.

Crowley: You said Norman Bridewell looked good for it. That’s why I put out a national warrant. Is he back or what?

Mike: I still think Bridewell did those murders but this is a different guy and I’m developing some theories, okay?

Crowley: Involving seventy five year old crimes.

Mike: Yes

Crowley: (scoffs) Well I look forward to hearing it, detective. Should be entertaining.

Crowley leaves Mike alone with his Fitzroy file. He picks up a picture of Henry as Kate looks on from her desk.

Act Three

Vicki goes to see Henry after dark to get his assistance with her latest case. He’s not as eager as she might hope, however.

Henry: Do you know what it’s like trying to draw with somebody looking over your shoulder?

Vicki: Hmm, it makes you want to stop working and discuss my case?

Henry: I have a deadline. If this book isn’t in to the printers by the end of the month my editor’s gonna kill me… again.

Vicki: (sighs) So much for a timeless existence as one of the children of the night.

Henry: Welcome to the 21st century.

Vicki: Henry, these people need our help.

Henry: I gave at the office.

Vicki: What, the little Prince doesn’t help the homeless?

Henry: I wandered Europe for years after the Great War. I know what it’s like to have nothing.

Henry looks at his drawing for a moment and then drops his pencil.

Henry: What do you need?

Vicki: Well, I’ve called the police in on this, but I just think that a vampire’s nose for blood will find things in the sewer that they will miss.

Henry: Sewer? Well, you didn’t say anything about a sewer.

Vicki: That’s because I was saving the best for last. I have to meet Annie at the coffee shop around the corner but I will call you later, okay?

Vicki leaves Henry at his desk as he protests her latest request.

Henry: I’m going alone? Vicki?

The only response to his questions is the slam of a door. Vicki meets up with Annie and takes her to the police station to give a statement. Mike is somewhat less than patient with his complaining witness.

Annie: Nice picture. You should get a better frame man. Like, uh, something in a rustic with a linen liner.

Mike: Yeah. You-you wanna put the picture down, please?

Vicki: its okay, Annie. Mike’s gonna help us.

Vicki gives Mike Francine’s bloody purse as Annie looks on, clearly uncomfortable.

Vicki: I picked this up in the park. It’s Francine’s. It’s covered in blood.

Annie can’t handle the sight of Francine’s bloody purse again and gets up to walk away.

Vicki: It’s okay.

Mike: Yeah it’s covered in blood and you have no victim.

Vicki: I have half a dozen witnesses who heard screams.

Mike: Vicki, come on, you know how this is gonna play out. Even if I get a statement, by the time I need her in court, she’s gonna be gone. She’s gonna be on something. She’s gonna be off her meds.

Vicki: Mike, I just handed you a bloody bag. Annie says there are four people missing, maybe more. We might be dealing with a serial killer.

Mike: Or, this Francine woman decided to move into the sewer, cut herself on a grate, or she OD’d.

Mike stops talking when he sees Crowley looking at him in disapproval. Vicki turns to look as Crowley walks out the door.

Mike: Look, Vick I… Vick I just have a really full case load right now, okay?

Vicki: Okay, so give me someone who can spare an hour.

Mike: No, I can’t sell this!

Vicki: Send out a uniform at least to bag and tag the evidence.

Mike: Why don’t you handle it?

Vicki: Fine! Loan me the forensics team and I’ll get right on it.

Mike: All right, you know what? I’ll-I’ll make a deal with you, okay? I will help you with your case, if you’ll help me with mine.

Vicki: You still need me for the tough stuff huh?

Mike: There’s something I want to show you. Follow me.

Vicki follows Mike straight down to the morgue to take a look at the working girl’s body and the bite marks. As they leave she holds up a hand to Annie.

Vicki: Five minutes.

Meanwhile, Henry checks out the sewer, his eyes going black as he sniffs the blood left on the grate. Something else in the woods catches his attention and he moves away from the sewer and towards the trees.

In the morgue Vicki pulls the sheet over the dead girl’s body and shakes her head, looking at Mike.

Vicki: This isn’t Henry. He doesn’t do this.

Mike: Oh really? Fang boy doesn’t eat?

Vicki: He doesn’t kill.

Mike: He tell you that? (At Vicki’s silence Mike leans forward) You’ve never actually even asked him have you?

Vicki: I trust him.

Mike: (laughs sarcastically) Who are you and what have you done with Vicki Nelson?

Vicki: Henry is not a killer.

Mike: No? And how do you know so much about his drinking habits?

Vicki again is silent and Mike presses the issue.

Mike: How many times has he sucked your blood, Vicki?

Vicki turns away and walks a short distance across the room. Finally she turns back to Mike, who’s still waiting for an answer, clearly concerned about her.

Vicki: You really want to know? (shrug) Once.

Mike: Are you insane?

Vicki: He was dying.

Mike: Any idea who he was with two nights ago?

Vicki: Two nights ago he was with me.

Mike: All night?

Vicki: Most of it.

Mike: Well, I hope I never need you as an alibi. Listen, I’ve got a body with two puncture wounds, no blood and no sign of struggle. Even if I didn’t believe in vampires, I’d be thinking vampire. So help me out here, Vick, is it Henry? Your new partner? Or, uh, are we talking about some blood sucking convention in town?

Vicki: Maybe it’s a wannabe. Or a cult. Maybe it’s another demon.

Mike: Okay, fine. If Henry didn’t do this then, uh, he won’t mind helping me out, will he?

Henry is still in the woods, being stalked by whatever killed Francine.  We see the perspective of the hunter as Henry moves cautiously about the forest. He’s stopped by a sudden whoosh of flame and turns to see a man with a torch, about to strike. Henry adopts his vampire voice and approaches the man at speed, stopping him from throwing the fiery torch.

Henry: Stop! You killed the woman. Francine.

Peter: I didn’t kill anyone. I’m hunting.

Henry: (normal voice) Hunting what?

Peter: the Wendigo.

Back at Vicki’s office, Peter tells her and Henry his story.

Vicki: What the hell’s a Wendigo?

Peter: Hunger, pure hunger.

Vicki: It doesn’t happen to drink blood, does it?

At Vicki’s question Henry turns to look at her in surprise.

Peter: It eats your flesh, cracks your bones and sucks out the marrow.

Henry: To each their own.

Vicki: So what is it then, some kind of animal?

Peter: Some say Wendigo was once a lost man in the woods. A cannibal spirit came into him, kept him alive, killing other lost souls he’d meet. Killed Francine.

Vicki: How do you know that? Did you see it?

Peter: We met before. When I was ten, my father took me out to shoot a deer.

As Peter talks we see a flashback to his first experience with the Wendigo.

Peter: There was no deer. There was a sound like the wind, but not like the wind. My father went to meet it and that’s when it took him. That’s when I saw it and it saw me. I grabbed a branch out of the fire to keep it back, but it never came for me.

The flashback ends and Peter looks across the desk at Vicki.

Peter: Next day, I found my father’s bones. Do you believe in destiny Ms. Nelson?

Vicki: Not a big fan.

Peter: My people say when you see a Wendigo, you’re marked for death. No matter how far you run, it’ll find you.

Henry: You can’t believe it followed you here.

Peter: Maybe it just moved here for better hunting. But maybe if it would’ve killed me back then, all these other people would still be alive.

Vicki: Just do me a favor Peter? Would you stay at a shelter tonight?

Peter: I like it outside, it’s my home.

Peter leaves Henry and Vicki alone. Henry looks out the window and whistles at the unlikely story they’ve just heard.

Vicki: Do you believe him?

Henry: I believe he believes it.

Vicki: Great. Aboriginal cannibal spirits infesting city ravines.

Henry: Maybe he’s got the right idea. Maybe somebody should put together a hunting party.

Vicki: That’s the spirit!

Henry: Actually ‘us’ not being the somebody I was referring to. My book’s still got four pages that need inking. The police can handle this Vicki.

Vicki: Okay. Yeah, Mike did say he would look into it for me.

Henry: Good.

Vicki: Mmhmm had to make a little deal though. He’s got a body, puncture marks on the neck, no blood. He wants to talk to you about it.

Henry: Imagine that.

Vicki: Henry, you’re the only vampire he knows.

Henry: What do you think?

Vicki: That you didn’t do it. Henry it’s just a conversation… it’s nothing to worry about.

Henry: That’s what my father said to Anne Boleyn… right before he took her head.

Act Four

The next day the man in black from the crime scene stops by the squad room. Kate brings him to Mike’s attention.

Kate: You have a visitor.

Mike recognizes him from the day before and looks at him as he does up his shirt and fixes his tie.

Mike: Did he say what he wants?

Kate: He said it’s a personal matter.

Kate leaves and Mike gets up, approaching him.

Mike: Detective-Sergeant Celluci, what can I do for you Mr…?

Javier: Javier Mendoza. I saw you the other day at the place where they found that poor young girl’s body.

Mike: Yeah, I saw you too. Make it a habit of hanging around crime scenes, Mr. Mendoza?

Javier: I was there for the same reason you were detective. I’m hunting for the killer.

Mike: Oh really? Well, do you, uh, have any suspects for me?

Javier: We both know who did this… Henry Fitzroy.

At Vicki’s office she and Coreen go over the ‘Wendigo problem’

Coreen: Pretty much every modern culture has its own variation of the Wendigo myth. Some researchers figure it’s easier to have a supernatural explanation for cannibalism rather than admit people actually eat each other.

Vicki: The Wendigo is human?

Coreen: Depends on the legend. Some cultures say they possess a person, make them crave human flesh. This sounds more like the monster version.

Vicki: I’m not gonna like the monster version am I?

Coreen: You know what a Sasquatch is right? Big foot?

Vicki: Yeah, I’ve got it, a Sasquatch.

Coreen: It’s like a Sasquatch, only it’s taller and thinner and less hairy, and Sasquatches are vegetarians.

Vicki: Vegetarian?

Coreen: These things eat people.

Vicki: Well then the burning question is how do we get it to stop eating people?

At the station Javier shows Mike his investigations into Henry’s past. Included is a picture of Mike, Vicki and Henry outside of the Cobb school for the gifted right after Mike finds out what Henry is.

Mike: You’ve been following me?

Javier: I’ve been tracking him. Like you, I’m an officer of the law – Canon law. I work for the church. I deal with anomalies.

Mike: You think that’s what Fitzroy is? An anomaly?

Javier: I think he’s an abomination. And we both know that your law is ill-equipped to deal with his kind.

Mike: If he killed this girl, he’ll pay for it.

Javier: Really detective? And if you can catch him how do you intend to prosecute him? Do you think a cell can hold him? And even if you can imprison him, are you prepared for what will happen on his first sunrise in captivity? I know this is difficult for you. Men like us, we follow a code.

Mike: Then you know that this badge means that I don’t believe in vigilantes or lynchings.

Javier: I don’t kill vampires. I have a means to neutralize them so they won’t kill again. I offer them salvation.

Mike: Mr. Mendoza, saving souls is a little outside of my jurisdiction.

Javier: And that poor girl we saw earlier was she outside your jurisdiction? I don’t think the law can help, but you can.

Javier goes over to his briefcase and gets out a file to show to Mike.

Javier: Delphine Guillaume, age 26, a lover of Fitzroy’s.

Mike: These photos must be at least 50 years old.

Javier: A little more than 60. Fitzroy killed her. After he seduced her.

Javier goes back to his briefcase and picks it up, leaving the file in Mike’s hands.

Javier: My number’s in the file.

Javier leaves Mike to his investigation. That evening, Mike goes to Henry’s and questions him about the murder.

Henry: How do we do this? Do you hit me with phone books until I confess?

Mike: Yeah, if you like. Ever meet her?

Henry: She’s not exactly my type.

Mike: Oh, and what exactly is your type Henry? O negative?

Henry takes the insult silently, getting up to glare at the detective before turning away to go and stand looking out the window.

Vicki: Mike, what are you doing? He’s trying to help.

Mike ignores Vicki and continues with his hard questioning.

Mike: That a vampire bite?

Henry: It might be.

Mike: Might be or is?

Henry: I told you already I’ve never met her.

Mike: Any other vampires in town I should know about?

Henry: We don’t all belong to same book club. Now I’ve answered your questions, are we done?

Mike: Not quite.

Mike gets out his growing file on Henry and opens it.

Mike: Any of these ladies look familiar?

Vicki: What is this? You gonna try and pin every cold case in the file on him?

Mike: No, just the ones I think he might actually have done.

Henry: If I’m going to kill somebody, I’m not gonna be that sloppy about it.

Mike: Really? Well, maybe it’s an accident, huh? You know you, uh, start going at it… things get a little too frisky, before you know it…

Henry: If I take a life, I remember it.

Mike: Let’s test that, shall we?

Vicki: You know what Mike? This is enough. He’s answered your questions.

Mike doesn’t answer, he simply holds up a picture in front of Henry.

Henry: Delphine.

Mike: Old friend?

Henry: Where did you get this?

Mike: You first. Did you kill her?

Henry: Yes.

Mike looks at Vicki triumphantly and Vicki just looks on in surprise.

Henry: Now unless you want to try to charge me for something that happened in 1944, we’re done here.

Henry leaves Mike and Vicki alone and they just stare at each other for a moment.

Later, Henry and Vicki get out of his car at the park encampment.

Vicki: Don’t worry. Annie will watch your ride.

Henry remains silent, just looking around the woods.

Vicki: Are you ever gonna talk to me again?

Henry: Are you gonna tell me why you had Celluci do your dirty work?

Vicki: No, he told me he just wanted to ask you about the girl they found the other night. I had no idea he was gonna ambush you. Who was the woman in the old photo?

Henry: It was a long time ago.

Vicki: What – what about all those other women though? If you didn’t know them, why not just say so?

Henry: Who says I didn’t know them?

The predator watches as Henry and Vicki approach the sewer grate and go in. Inside Henry and Vicki investigate, Henry catching site of some blood on leaves in the corner. They are startled by Peter, who has come into the sewer behind them, carrying a fiery torch once again.

Henry: You should go back.

Peter: It’s my fight.

Henry turns to look in the direction they were going, sensing something up ahead.

Vicki: What is it?

Henry: Death.

Vicki leads the way and Henry motions Peter in front of him.

Henry: Peter.

Further into the sewer they find piles of bones and clothing.

Vicki: Oh shoot.

Peter notices a jacket lying in the room holding all the bones.

Peter: That jacket belongs to Francine.

Vicki: Oh Peter, I’m sorry.

Henry turns to see the Wendigo rushing them and he runs to meet it.

Henry: Look out!

As Henry and the Wendigo fight Peter goes to join them even as Vicki tries to hold him back.

Vicki: Peter! No!

Peter: He’s mine!

Peter pushes Vicki out of the way and rushes the Wendigo. Unfortunately at the same time the Wendigo slashes at Henry and manages to push him off, right into Peter, knocking the torch out of his hand and into a puddle.

Without the fire to protect him, the Wendigo easily gets the upper hand on Peter and drags him off, away from Vicki and Henry. Vicki runs after them, flashlight in hand as Henry, holding a hand to his bleeding neck, gets up and goes after them.

Act Five

Henry urges Vicki out of the sewer, their search for Peter unsuccessful. He’s coughing, still nursing his neck injury which hasn’t healed.

Vicki: Why did it let us go?

Henry: It has its food.

Vicki: We gotta go back. Peter’s still in there.

Vicki tries to go back inside but Henry stops her.

Henry: It’s too late. It’s too late.

Vicki: God, I thought you could take that thing!

Henry: So did I.

Vicki: What’s the matter? You-you’re not healing!

Henry: I lost too much blood. I need to feed.

Vicki immediately pushes up her sleeve, offering her arm to Henry. He looks at it but pulls back, uninterested.

Henry: I wasn’t asking.

Henry leaves the sewer and moves towards his car, Vicki just staring after him.

Henry: I’ll drop you downtown.

At the station Mike hangs up the pictures of all the dead women in his “Henry file” and begins to make notes. At her office Vicki looks out a window, lost in thought. In another part of the city Henry seduces and feeds off a very willing young woman.

Mike hangs up the picture of him, Vicki and Henry and considers it thoughtfully. Vicki closes her blinds at her office and heads to bed. In his penthouse, Henry does the same after securing the blinds that lock out the day by remote.

The next morning Kate finds Mike at his board of pictures. Mike immediately takes down the picture of him with Vicki and Henry.

Kate: You been here all night?

Mike: What, its morning already?

Kate: I think you need this more than I do.

Mike: Oh, god bless you.

Kate hands him her coffee and walks away towards her desk but Mike calls her back.

Mike: Kate. Hypothetical.

Kate: Hit me.

Mike: All right. There’s this case and you know who done it. I mean you just know.

Kate: But you can’t make it stick.

Mike: You’ve got evidence. Maybe even a confession.

Kate: But it’s no good because of how you obtained it.

Mike: Or because of who the guy is.

Kate: They’re connected.

Mike: Untouchable. But… there is someone at another agency who can put this guy away. Only this agency doesn’t play by the same rules.

Kate: FBI? RCMP? Military? Right, hypothetical.

Mike: Hypothetical.

Kate: How bad is this?

Mike: Serial killer. Lots over a long time.

Kate: You hand it over.

Mike: No matter what they do to him?

Kate: We both believe in due process. We wouldn’t be having this conversation otherwise. The important thing is to get the bad guy off the street. No more killing.

Kate leaves Mike to ponder what she’s told him.

Mike: No more killing.

At Vicki’s office, she and Coreen discuss their own case.

Vicki: You know, Peter said that once this thing sees you, you’re marked for death. What does that mean? I have a new stalker?

Coreen: That’s one version.

Vicki: Great. Before you know it the supernatural types are going to have to line up to take a shot at me.

Coreen: Henry, too. You guys should stick together.

Vicki: That’s a bit complicated right now. Is there anything else on the aboriginal connection?

Coreen: What’s Peter’s heritage? Iroquois? Mohawk? Algonquin?

Vicki: You know I never thought to ask. What difference does that make now?

Coreen: The Wendigo has over 60 names and more than twice as many stories of how it kills and why, and how to stop it. If it is Peter’s Wendigo, maybe I can narrow down the options. All the myths are culturally specific.

Vicki: Okay, best guess. How do we kill this thing?

Coreen: You could try silver bullets.

Vicki: Come on… I mean… even I know that’s a werewolf thing.

Coreen: A lot of cultures believe that silver has mystic properties.  I’ve got a documented case from 1864 where the Ojibway go hunting for the Wendigo with silver bullets.

Vicki: They have documented cases?

Coreen: How cool is that right?

Vicki: Well I guess I’ll be melting down Grandma’s bracelet tonight.

Coreen: Also a lot of cultures believe that Wendigo’s hearts are made of ice, or turn to ice, or freeze. Some people say that’s a metaphor, but there are stories about burning Wendigos or boiling them alive or…

Vicki: Wait that’s it! When Peter was little he hid by the fire. When Francine was killed, Annie was by the fire. It’s afraid of fire. I mean, it didn’t go after Peter until after he dropped his torch.

Coreen: That’s why it lives up north, it can’t stand the heat.

Vicki: Well, that’s great. Just… all we need now is a flamethrower.

Coreen: Done! I’ll need an hour. I made one last year for a party.

Vicki: Of course you did.

Vicki heads over to Henry’s after sunset, flame thrower in hand.

Vicki: You look better. Did you have a nice dinner?

Henry: The body’s in the next room if you’d like to take a look.

Vicki: Yeah I’ll take your word for it. Listen, Henry, we’ve gotta go back.

Henry: Into the sewer, to kill an unkillable spirit.

Vicki: Unless you have a better idea.

Henry: Not going to the sewer? This isn’t your problem Vicki.

Vicki: Henry I have an obligation.

Henry: 100 dollars. That’s all it takes to risk your life.

Vicki: Actually it was 98 dollars. And 56 cents. Look, Henry, it killed Peter. It’s going to keep killing. And who’s gonna go out there and stop it, huh? The police aren’t gonna go near this.

Henry: Why does it have to be you?

Vicki: There are things out there that people can’t or won’t see. Now that I’ve seen them, I am not just gonna walk away.

Henry: You know how I survived 500 years?

Vicki: Megadoses of vitamin C and complete danger avoidance?

Henry: Picking my battles.

Vicki: Then if I were you I would put your coat on. Because if Peter was right? The Wendigo seeing us means that we are firmly on the entrée section of his menu.

Henry: One doesn’t win an argument with you?

Vicki: Don’t even bother.

Meanwhile, Mike seeks out Javier and meets him in a dark alley.

Mike: Javier, sorry I’m late.

Javier: You’re here now.

Mike: Listen, I need to ask you something right up front.

Javier: Anything.

Mike: How many people has Fitzroy killed?

Javier: Including this latest girl? He’s lived nearly 500 years. He feeds every night. I mean, how many do you think?

Mike: You said that, uh, he has a pattern.

Javier: Most of these creatures are quite predictable. Fitzroy prefers women. He seduces them, brings them into his world. Once he gains their trust, perhaps even their love, he consummates the relationship with the only thing that is real to a monster like him. Their blood.

Mike: Does he ever drink from them before he kills them?

Javier: Always. But once he tastes a lover’s blood, they will die. The only question is how soon.

Mike: Javier, what… what do you need from me? Why me?

Javier: I need somebody he trusts.

Mike: What… you think Henry trusts me?

Javier: Of course. You know what he is and you’re still alive. Henry Fitzroy wouldn’t let me anywhere near him, but you…

Javier takes out a metal star with a sun symbol in the middle and tries to give it to Mike.

Mike: Not my style.

Javier: The Illuminacion del sol. It drains a vampire’s power. It allows me to deal with him.

Mike: Look, Javier… I’ve seen what Henry can do. How’s this going to stop him?

Javier: Believe me, detective, I’ve trusted my life to this many times. All you must do is to place it on his chest.

Mike: And that’s it?

Javier: You have feelings for this Victoria Nelson. And you know he’s already tasted her. If you fail to do what I ask, she will die. You must know that.

Javier leaves Mike to ponder the situation. Meanwhile, Henry and Vicki stand outside the entrance to the sewer as Vicki tests the flamethrower Coreen made for her… out of a super soaker.

Henry: If I ever had any doubts about your plan, seeing that certainly allays them.

Vicki: (Lighting up a tree) Bring on the Wendigo.

Henry: I’d better let you lead. I don’t think I can trust my back anymore.

Vicki: Henry, don’t do this. I don’t judge you.

Henry: How generous. Then what does it matter what I’ve done. My life is my business. I drink blood or I die.

Vicki: You chose to be a vampire.

Henry: I chose to give my life to be with the woman I loved, I chose to experience hundreds of years of human history. And every time I feed, I am choosing to live. What is your choice, Vicki?

Vicki doesn’t answer. Instead she heads into the sewer, leaving Henry to follow her.

In another part of the city, Javier unlocks another of his “Illuminacion del Sol” artifacts and removes it from a very much alive Delphine’s chest.

Javier: It’s time Delphine.

Delphine moans in relief as the artifact is removed from her chest. She is hanging in chains in a darkened room.

Delphine: Thank you.

Javier: Thank you for your confession.

Delphine: You made me a promise. You said if I confessed, you’d set me free.

Javier: And I always fulfill my promises. In a few short hours the sun will set you free.

Javier moves a drape aside to show her that there is a window pointed straight at her.

Delphine: Ah! You bastard! How many have you killed?

Javier: I don’t kill. I give them salvation. You should be grateful!

Delphine just screams in response, yanking at the chains.

Javier: Thank you for giving me the one I’ve been looking for, the one who made you.

Delphine’s eyes go black and her teeth elongate and she hisses at him as Javier pours something from a specially made tap into a glass and picks it up.

Javier: Henry Fitzroy. I’ll save him too.

Javier toasts a very angry Delphine as she struggles to escape the chains that hold her.

Act Six

Henry and Vicki move further into the sewers, Vicki holding her homemade flamethrower at the ready. Henry is eager to continue their previous conversation.

Henry: Why don’t you just ask me what you really want to know?

Vicki: What is it that I really want to know?

Henry: About the woman in the photo. Delphine.

Vicki: I’m not sure I want to know.

Henry: She asked me to turn her and I did.

Vicki: Oh, okay.

Henry: But you have to understand. I have killed people and I will kill again. It’s part of who and what I am. I was raised to be a king. I learned the art of war when children today are learning to color.

Vicki: I thought I had a dysfunctional childhood.

Henry: I killed for my country and I killed for honor and when I met Christina I became much more intimate with death.

Vicki: But couldn’t you con-control it or something?

Henry: When you turn you don’t see people anymore. You see prey. I spent a long time learning to control my impulses. But I’m not human, Vicki, and every once in a while, somebody’s gotta die.

Mike shows up at Vicki’s looking for her but he finds Coreen instead, who was just about to leave for the day.

Mike: Oh, hey, Coreen.

Coreen: Hey, Mike. She’s already left.

Mike: Did, uh, she go to the ravine? Is Henry with her?

Coreen: Yeah, vampires don’t leave home without ‘em.

Mike: So you know what he is and you’re okay with that?

Coreen: He’s amazing. It’s like, if vampires are out there, anything’s possible you know? Sasquatches, UFO’s, Angels.

Mike: He hasn’t sucked your blood too, has he?

Coreen: I wish.

Mike: You guys are all insane.

Coreen: Mike, if you’re going out there, take these.

Mike: What, bullets?

Coreen: Silver bullets.

Mike: Do I look like the lone ranger to you?

Coreen: For the Wendigo. I’ve been reading more about the purification properties of silver. It’s like demon penicillin.

Mike: Uh, you know what, Coreen…?

Coreen: This might be the only thing that can stop it so just take them, okay?

Mike: All right.

Mike turns to leave but stops as he looks at the bullets again.

Mike: Oh, hey. How did you know my gun’s caliber?

Coreen: Glock nine millimeter, nine by nineteen casing, right? I’ve seen you use it. Sweet piece.

Mike: Yeah.

Back in the sewer, Vicki still leads the way, Henry keeping a close watch behind her.

Vicki: You’re gonna be able to smell him right?

Henry: Maybe

Vicki: Think ‘reassuring tone’.

Henry: This is your plan.

Vicki: You’re the one who was learning military strategy in his diapers. You must have some ideas.

Henry: I’m not the one who needs to be worried, Vicki. It’s not my blood he’ll be able to spill.

Vicki: Good work on the reassuring tone.

Coming up on the room where all the bones are Vicki gives it a quick sweep.

Vicki: It’s not here.

Henry: It’s here. It’s here.

The Wendigo drops from the ceiling and Vicki shoots at it but the flamethrower misfires.

Vicki: It’s not working!

The Wendigo shoves her aside but Henry goes after it and pulls it off her. They fight as Vicki goes over to the wall.

Henry: Use the electricity! Light it up!

Vicki: Get out of the water!

Henry: Do it!

Vicki throws the electrical pipe into the water as the Wendigo shoves Henry down. The Wendigo flies down a corridor and Vicki runs to Henry.

Vicki: You okay?

Henry shoves her off and gets up

Henry: Fine!

The Wendigo gets up and prepares to charge them again

Vicki: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Henry pushes Vicki behind him but it’s not necessary as Mike shoots off four rounds, finally destroying the Wendigo from further off down the corridor. Vicki looks at him in surprise.

Vicki: Mike? How did you…

Mike: Silver bullets. Coreen said they’d come in handy.

As Mike approaches them, he keeps a wary eye on Henry as he passes them and walks a little ways away.

Vicki: But wh-what are you doing here?

Mike: I have something… for Henry.

Vicki: What?

Mike doesn’t answer just approaches Henry and puts the star on his chest. Henry groans in pain as the points of the star curl inward into his chest and he falls back against the wall, clutching at his chest in pain. Vicki shoves Mike back from him.

Vicki: What did you do!?

Mike doesn’t answer as Javier approaches a weak and twitching Henry from another part of the sewer.

Javier: We meet again Henry Fitzroy.

Henry: No!

Javier: Time to pay for your crimes.

Vicki: What did you do?

Mike: Henry has killed too many people. I can’t let him kill you Vicki.

Vicki approaches Javier who points a gun at her.

Vicki: You let him go.

Javier: The vampire’s whore. You think I haven’t seen the devil’s own marks on you?

Mike: hey, hey, hey! Mendoza.

Javier: I’m sorry detective.

Mike: This wasn’t part of our deal.

Vicki: What are you doing to him?

Javier: If you care about this creature, then do as I say. (To Mike) Give me your gun. Lock those gates with your handcuffs.

Vicki looks at Henry who is still writhing around on the floor in pain.

Vicki: Mike, don’t.

Javier: Now.

Mike does as Javier orders, locking himself and Vicki behind the gate with the handcuffs.

Vicki: You bastard.

Javier: (To Mike) The key.

Mike tosses the keys out onto the floor and Javier holsters his gun now that the threat to him is over.

Javier: Thank you.

Javier goes to Henry, picking him up and leading him out of the sewer.

Vicki: Henry!

Mike: Vicki I didn’t know.

Vicki: Don’t say a word!
