Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Tory and Ali are practicing together and so are Bryan and Trip.  They position themselves so that they form a square around the Yin Yang in the center of the floor.  They wait.  Tom positions himself in the center of all of them, taking each student on individually starting with Bryan, then Tory,  then Ali and finally Trip.  Tom brings his hands together and bows.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School Hallway

(Ali, Bryan and Trip are on their way out when tom catches up with them.)

Tom:  Hey, nice job today in class.  I was impressed with your progress.

Ali:  Thanks.

Trip:  It was fun.

Tom:  Good.

Bryan:  I almost got you on that dragon palm.

Tom:  Well you might have if your stances were stronger.

Bryan:  No, next time.  Hey, guess what?  I think I found a job.

Trip:  Hey, right on.

Tom:  Yeah, where's that?

Bryan:  Oh, this club in town needs a new DJ.  I figure once they hear my mix, I'm a shoe in.

Ali:  How cool.

Bryan:  For sure.

Ali:  If you get it, we're all going out dancing together.

Bryan:  Aiight.

Ali:  You too, Mr. C.

Tom:  I don't think so.  (Everyone laughs)  I'll see you guys tomorrow.

Trip:  Alright, see ya.

Ali:  Bye.

Bryan:  Wait.  What do you mean "if I get the job"?  I'm getting' the job.  It's a done deal.

(Tory joins the group at Tom leaves.)

Tory:  Hey, Mr. C.

Tom:  Hi.

Tory:  Hey guys.

Bryan:  What's up?

Ali:  Hey, Tory.

Bryan:  Alright, I better get goin'.  My interview's in an hour.

(Bryan starts to walk away and Trip stops him.)

Trip:  Yeah, can you uh give me a ride somewhere, man?

Bryan:  Yeah, sure.

Tory:  What, are you gonna run away every time you see me now?

Trip:  No.  I gotta pick an assignment up at the library.

Tory:  (doesn't really believe him.)  Oh.  Cuz you've been avoiding me at school all day.

Trip:  I wasn't avoiding you.  I was busy.

Bryan:  (who's been waiting by the door.  Impatiently)  Look, you wanna stay and play out your drama?  Cuz I gotta book.

Trip:  No.  I'm coming, man.  See you guys later.

(Tory give him a short, annoyed wave.  She sighs and sits down on the bench behind her where Ali is already sitting.)

Ali:  I hate that awkward post-breakup week.

Tory:  It's been hideous.  I never wanna go through this again.

Ali:  Maybe you're just not in an emotional place to be in a relationship.

Tory:  What do you mean?  Like, ever?

Ali:  No, I mean right now.  Come on, I didn't mean 'like, ever'.  Let me buy you a coffee and we can commiserate about being single.

Tory:  What are you talking about?  I thought you were all hot and heavy with Nick?

Ali:  Firstly, I mean nothing ever really happened.  Secondly, didn't you notice that he was AWOL from class today?

Tory:  Yeah.

Ali:  Well apparently he's gone.  Went overseas to visit his father.  Didn't even bother to tell me.  I had to find out from Tom.

Tory:  Well is he coming back?

Ali:  I don't know.  Maybe he'll send me a postcard.

Tory:  K, that really sucks.

Ali:  Yep.  I'll get over it.

Tory:  You know, I'm buying you a cup of coffee.

(Tory stands up and grabs Ali's wrists dragging her to her feet.)

Ali:  And one of those little chocolate biscotti things?

Tory:  Sure.

[Opening Credits]

Scene:  Outside Waterfront

(Ali is practicing her kicks in a grassy area.  A guy in his twenties is taking pictures of her.  Ali comes up to him.)

Ali:  Excuse me, did you just take my picture?

Photographer:  Yeah.  I'm sorry.  I probably should have asked you.

Ali:  No.  I'm just really self conscious about having my picture taken.

Photographer:  Oh.  Then maybe it's good I didn't ask, cuz you looked really graceful.

Ali:  I seriously doubt that, but thanks.

Photographer:  What was it that you were doing?

Ali:  I'm studying martial arts.

Photographer:  And you can kick that high?

Ali:  I'm a dancer.

Photographer:  I can kick to about here.

(He demonstrates and his foot doesn't go more than two feet off the ground.)

Ali:  It's good for fighting pets.

Photographer:  Exactly!  That's what I'm talkin' about.  I can take on any postal Chihuahua that steps up.  I'm Mark, by the way.

Ali:  Ali.

(They shake hands)

Ali:  Oh, can I see that?

Mark:  Yeah.

(He picks one of his cameras off the ground and hands it to her.)

Mark:  Yeah, you got it.  Just look, yeah, look right through there.

(She takes a picture of him.)

Ali:  There, now we're even.

Mark:  K.

Ali:  I gotta go.  Go lots of homework.

Mark:  Where do you go?

Ali:  Marina Park High.  What about you?

Mark:  I'm a student over at SFU.  Yeah, they have a really great visual arts department there.

Ali:  Well it was nice to meet you.

Mark:  Yeah.  Hey um, any chance we could meet again?

(He hands her a card and smiles.)

Ali:  I think I can arrange that.  See ya.

(Ali walks away and Mark stares after her.)

Scene:  Indoor Ice Rink

Music:  "Here Without You" by Three Doors Down.

(Claire is skating and Tom is watching from above.  Lower in the stands, Beth and Phillip are also watching her.  They see Tom.)

Scene:  Bryan's Club (Aquarius)

(A bunch of guys are sitting on bar stools waiting to be interviewed.  Bryan is easily the smallest of the guys.)

Bryan:  (to the guy next to him.)  You here for the DJ gig?

Club Boss:  Okay, Bryan Lanier?

Bryan:  Yo, that's me.

(Bryan walks over to the boss with his tape.)

Club Boss:  (to bartender)  I gotta tell you guys to stop talking to the ladies and get the drinks moved, go it?  (looks Bryan up and down)  You're Bryan.

Bryan:  Yeah.  Hey look, first thing:  Forget everybody else out there.  I'm the only man for the job.  Here's a sample of my work.  (hand over his tape)  It's a real cool mix of R&B, hip hop, techno and house.

Club Boss:  No no, DJ job's taken, man.

Bryan:  No!  You haven't heard my stuff yet.  Look, it'll blow your mind.

Club Boss:  Hey bright eyes, I'm looking for a bouncer, okay?  That's the only job I'm giving out today.  (moves on to the next guy)  Tree!  (under his breath)  Is that an actual name?  Is there a Tree here?!

Bryan:  Alright look, you got the bouncer job I'll take the bouncer job.  No problem.

Club Boss:  You know what?  I don't think so.

(Tree comes up behind Bryan)

Bryan:  No seriously, as long as I'm near the music I'm cool.

Tree:  Look man, you want me to get rid of him or what?

Club Boss:  Yeah sure, why not.  Consider it an audition.  Sorry kid.

Tree:  Hey, no problem player.  Let's go, PeeWee.

(Tree grabs Bryan by the shoulder and starts to show him the door, rather roughly.)

Bryan:  Hey, that's not how you show someone the door!

(Bryan breaks free and kicks Tree in the shins.  The other guys waiting to be interviewed seem impressed)

Interviewee:  . . . can actually fight. . .

(Bryan shoves Tree into some glasses on the bar and shatters them.  Bryan turns back to the Club Boss)

Bryan:  Is that what you're looking for?

(Tree attacks Bryan from behind and Bryan drops him again)

Club Boss:  Cool.  When can you start?

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Tom is working by himself in the main practice room.  Claire enters and watches him.)

Claire:  That's so cool!

Tom:  (pleased)  Hey!  Thanks.  Wanna learn something?

Claire:  It looks hard.

Tom:  No come on, you can do it.  Just follow me okay, relax.  Let your energy flow from one movement to the next, okay.  Step to the right.  One.  Step to the other side.  (Tom completes the steps and watches Claire finish.)  Good.  Try it by yourself?  (She does so and they do some more moves, Tom correcting her when she needs it.)  You're a natural.

Claire:  Maybe I inherited it.

Scene:  Tom's Kitchen

(Claire is sitting at the counter and Tom brings her something to drink)

Tom:  You know my grandmother was my favorite person.  She'd spoil me rotten.  And I remember when she told us she was going back to Hong Kong, I was so upset.  And just before she got on the plane, she gave me this.  (he pulls a necklace out of his pocket)

Claire:  It's beautiful.

Tom:  She told me that whenever I wanted to be with her, just to hold it, close my eyes and she would be with me.

Claire:  Did it work?

Tom:  Like a charm.  Here, I want you have it.

(Tom puts the necklace around her neck)

Claire:  Really?  Thanks.  Do you think it'll work for me?  I mean, when I'm not with you.

Tom:  Well if it doesn't you could just pick up the phone.

(Claire's watch beeps and she checks it)

Claire:  I've gotta go.  Mom and Phillip don't know I'm here.  Bye Dad.

Tom:  Bye.

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Tory and Bryan are fighting each other in the center of the room.)

Tom:  Bryan, move in on Tory but only go two thirds speed.  (He does and she blocks) Again.  (This time Tory lands a hit on Bryan.)  That's good, Tory.  Don't lose your balance.  Don't over commit.  Try to get inside, Bryan.

Bryan:  Come on, at this speed I can't do nothing, man.

Tom:  Just keep trying.

Bryan:  Unless I come at you like this:

(Bryan changes his approach, but Tory flips him to the ground.)

Bryan:  That was two thirds the speed?

Tom:  Everybody saw what happened, right?

Bryan:  Yeah!  She cheated!

Tom:  Bryan got frustrated.  He lost his patience.  He tried to force the issue and in forcing the issue he lost his balance and his center line.  You gave Tory all the advantage.  If you execute your forms correctly, eventually your opponent is going to make a mistake.  So be patient and wait for the right opportunity.

Tory:  Need a hand?

(Tory helps him up.)

Bryan:  Thanks.  Cage match anytime.

Tory:  Bring it.

Bryan: (con't)  Me and you.

Tom:  K, conditioning.  Let's go do some stairs.

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Hallway

(Later, after class.  Bryan is getting a drink out of a refrigerator in the hallway.  Tom walks behind him carrying a stack of books.)

Tom:  Hey Bryan.

Bryan:  Hey.

Tom:  Did you get that job as a DJ?

Bryan:  Nah, they hired somebody else.  I took a bouncer job.

Tom:  That's a pretty tough job, you sure you're up for that?

Bryan:  Yeah it's cool.  Keep's me around the music.

Tom:  Alright, well good.  Let me know how it goes.

Bryan:  Alright.

Scene:  Girls Locker Room

(Tory and Ali are changing and washing up after class)

Tory:  Hey, you wanna go get some lunch?  I just discovered this new sushi place in Union Square.  It's really cheep.

Ali:  I wish that I could, but I kinda have to meet someone.

Tory:  Who?

Ali:  Oh, just this guy.

Tory:  "Oh, just this guy."  Come on, details.

Ali:  Okay.  I was at Marina Park practicing my forms and this guy, Mark, sorta showed up out of nowhere and started taking my picture.

Tory:  Okay, that's a little weird.

Ali:  I know, but it's because he's a photography student.  He's really sweet.  And besides, it's just coffee.

Tory:  Well how old is he?

Ali:  I don't know.  He's a sophomore at SFU.  You don't approve.

Tory:  I don't know, did he offer you a career in modeling?

Ali:  No, it was totally not like that.  He's very charming.

Tory:  (not 100% convincing)  Alright, I believe you.

Ali:  You are so cynical.

Tory:  I am not!  Just sounds like a come on, that's all.

(Ali sighs and starts to leave)

Tory:  Call my cell later, tell me how it goes.

Ali:  I will!

Scene:  Health Club Parking Lot

(Phillip comes out of the building and Tom is waiting.)

Tom:  Phillip!

Phillip:  (annoyed) What are you doing here?

Tom:  I wanted to talk to you about Claire and I was hoping we could work this out.

Phillip:  Nah.

Tom:  Look, Phillip, I'm not trying to take her away from you.  But Claire is my daughter.  And she's gonna be a part of my life.

Phillip:  You're daughter, huh?  That's beautiful.  Who drives your daughter to school every morning?  Who stays up with her when she's sick?  Who consoles her when her friends tease her?  Tell me, what is it that you have done for your daughter, besides bring misery into her life?

Tom:  Look Phillip, I'm not going away.

Phillip:  You know what your problem is?  You don't listen.  Stay away from me.  Stay away from my wife.  Stay away from my daughter.

Scene:  Coffee Shop

(Mark and Ali are sitting at a table and Ali is looking through a photo album of Mark's photo's.)

Ali:  Wow, you took these.

(Mark nods, pleased with the attention.)

Ali:  They're beautiful.  A little unsettling, but they're beautiful.

Mark:  But see, that's what I'm trying to do though.  I really just, I just wanna shake things up, you know?

Ali:  I admire that.  It's tough to do.

Mark:  No, I know that.  I'm probably just gonna wind up shooting fashion spreads but um. . .   Okay, I have to ask you something.

Ali:  Sure.

Mark:  (hesitating)  um. .  .

Ali:  No.

Mark:  I can't.

Ali:  Go ahead.

Mark:  How can a girl as beautiful as you not have a boyfriend?

Ali:  Oh God, so many reasons.  Um, I say what's on my mind a lot and that gets me into trouble.  Mostly I just tend to choose the wrong guy.  (Mark jokingly reacts to this)  No, not you.  I'm talking about high school boys.

Mark:  Good.

(Ali's phone beeps.)

Ali:  Oh man.

(Ali starts gathering her things together)

Mark:  What?

Ali:  I gotta go.

Mark:  You. . . oh.

Ali:  Call me later.

Mark:  Definitely.

Ali:  Umm. . .bye.

Mark:  Bye.

(Ali stops outside the window and waves.  Mark waves back.  As soon as she's out of view, Mark takes his camera out of his bag and approaches a girl working on her laptop)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Room

(Tory enters and starts working on her forms by herself.  Mark starts taking her picture from above.  Tory sees him and gets annoyed- and remains annoyed during the whole conversation.)

Tory:  Can I help you?

Ali:  Hey, sorry to bother you.  I'm looking for Ali.

Tory:  She's not here

(Mark starts walking down the stairs so that he's on the same level as Tory.)

Tory:  How'd you get in here, anyway?

Mark:  Oh, the door was open.  I just thought I'd take a look around.  You know, you're good.  You've been doing this for awhile, haven't you?

Tory:  So you're. . .?

Mark:  Oh, I'm Mark.  I'm a photographer.  (hands Tory his card)  And I got some photos for Ali.  Are you a friend of hers?

Tory:  Here, I'll 'em to her.

(She reaches for the envelope and Mark hands them to her.)

Mark:  You got a name?

Tory:  Tory.

Mark:  Great.  Thanks Tory.  Hey uh, while I'm here why don't I take some shots of you?  Do you mind?

Tory:  Yeah, I do.  But I'll tell ya what, I'll let you keep the ones you already took.

Mark:  (laughs)  I guess I'm busted, huh?

Tory:  There's the door.

Mark:  Sorry to bother you.

(Tory goes back to her practicing but stops.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Marina Park High- Lockers

(Tory comes up to Ali's locker and hands her the photos)

Tory:  That guy Mark dropped by the school and left these for you.

Ali:  Oh great!  Thanks.

Tory:  What do you know about this guy?

Ali:  Mark?  (Tory nods)  He's really sweet.

Tory:  I get a weird vibe.

Ali:  Why?

Tory:  I caught him watching me.  And then he launched right into his Let-Me-Take-Your-Picture routine.

Ali:  He asked to take your picture?

Tory:  Yeah.

Ali:  Well I guess that's because that's his thing.  I mean he's a photography student.

Tory:  He was taking pictures from the mezzanine before he even asked.  Look, I'm serious.  This was weird.

Ali:  Why are you saying all this?  Are you jealous?

Tory:  Why would I be jealous?

Ali:  Maybe because you just broke up with Trip and you're upset because I met someone, I mean, I don't know.

Tory:  Or maybe I'm upset because you're hooking up with a psycho!  Do not turn this on me, Ali.

Ali:  Can we not have this conversation right now?  I'm late for class.

Tory:  Alright, fine!

Scene:  Aquarius

(Bryan's working and there's a huge crowd of people waiting to get in.  A pretty blonde is next in line.)

Chantelle:  Chantelle, plus one.

Bryan:  Chantelle plus one.  (He lets them in)  Have fun, beautiful.  Keep it real.

Angry Guy:  Hey, pint size!  When you gonna let me in, man?

Bryan:  I told you, the club is full right now.

Angry Guy:  Yeah right.  I guess you only got room for pretty girls then, huh?

Bryan:  She was on the list, there's nothing I could do.

Bouncer:  Look man, he told you the club's full.

Bryan:  (to the other bouncer)  Man, you hear this tired crap?  This DJ sucks.

Bouncer:  He's my brother.

Bryan:  (back pedaling)  Oh, well I like the tunes he was playing before.

Bouncer:  Oh yeah?

Bryan:  Yeah, that was really kickin'.

Bouncer:  Okay.

(Ali and Tory walk up.)

Bryan:  Alright, you guys made it.

Tory:  Hey.

Bryan:  Hey yo, these are my friends.  They're cool.  Aiight?

Ali:  Oh hey Bryan, do me a favor?  My friend Mark is meeting us here.  Can you put him on the list?

Bryan:  (suggestively) Your friend?

Ali:  His name's Mark Line.       (Sorry, not 100% sure of his name)

Tory:  (alarmed)  Mark's coming?

Ali:  Tory, just give him a chance.

Bryan:  You all have fun, I gotcha.

(The girls go in.  Two more guys

Antwon:  Hey bro, I'm Antwon, a buddy of Leon's.

Bryan:  Oh okay.  Yo, what's up?

(Bryan lets the guys in.)

Bryan:  Cool.

(The Angry Guy pushes his way to the front of the crowd and tries to go get in.  Bryan puts his arm up to block him)

Angry Guy:  Forget this!  Get out of my way!  I'm going in.

Bryan:  Hey, what are you doing?

Angry Guy:  I'm going inside!  It's my turn, Sweet Pea.

Bryan:  Hey look, I told you, you're not on the list.

Angry Guy:  Man, you're full of crap!  I'm going inside.

Bryan:  No you're not!

Bouncer:  Hey man, why don't you go home, man?  We don't want no trouble here.

Angry Guy:  What, you think you're better than me?  Answer me, punk!  You think you're better than me?  Better yet, what time do you get off?

Bryan:  I get off at 2.

Angry Guy:  Then that's when I'll come back.  And I'm gonna kick your ass.

Bryan:  (laughs)  Suit yourself.  You know what?  I'll put it in my palm pilot.  (mimes the action)  Ass Kicking, 2 am.  Done!

Angry Guy:  You better be here.

Scene:  Aquarius- Inside

Music:  "The Wreckoning" by Boomkat.

(Ali is leading Tory through the crowd.  They make it to the bar where Trip is waiting.  Ali taps him on the shoulder and he turns around.)

Tory:  Hey!

Trip:  Hey.  How you doin'?

Tory:  Good.  You been here long?

Trip:  No, I just got here.

(Ali scoots between Trip and Tory and leaves them along.  There's a few awkward seconds.)

Tory:  Is this okay?  Us hanging out together?

Trip:  Oh yeah, sure.  I mean, why should it be weird?  We'll just go back to being friends, right?

Tory:  I'd like that.  (beat)  Wanna dance?

Trip:  Yes.

(They go off and dance.  We cut to Ali, who's approaching Mark.)

Ali:  Mark, you made it!  (she hugs him)

Mark:  Of course I made it.  This place is cool.  How's it going?

Ali:  Great.  I'm just keeping an eye on those two.  (quick shot of Tory and Trip)  Oh, you met Tory, didn't you?

Mark:  I did, though I don't think she likes me very much.

Ali:  She doesn't know you.  She'll come around.  Oh, I love this song!  We're dancing.

Mark:  Oh, no!  I don't dance.

(Ali pulls Mark to the dance floor despite his protesting.  Ali tried to convince him (can't really make out what she says) but it doesn't work.)

Mark:  No no no no no, I'm sorry.  I just, I don't dance.  I'll be right back.

(Ali dances back over to Trip and Tory.  Mark pushes his way through the crowd and slams the bathroom door open and goes in.  Tory watches this.)

Scene:  Aquarius- Men's Room

(Mark turns on the sink and splashes water onto his face.  He's breathing hard.)

Mark:  Calm down, Mark.  It's not the end of the world.

Scene:  Aquarius- Inside

(Ali is back with Tory and Trip)

Scene:  Aquarius- Men's Room

(Mark is still breathing hard and freaking out)

Mark:  Breathe.

Scene:  Aquarius- Inside

(Ali is dancing with Trip and Tory)

Scene:  Aquarius- Men's Room

Mark:  Dammit!

(He rips a paper towel dispenser off the wall and starts trashing the bathroom)

Scene:  Aquarius- Inside

(Ali, Trip and Tory are all dancing together.  Tory and Trip start to get too close and Trip pulls back.)

Trip:  You know what?  I can't do this.

Tory:  What?

Trip:  Pretend everything is normal.  I'm sorry.  (Trip leaves)

Ali:  (sees Tory not dancing)  What's the matter?

Tory:  I don't know.

Scene:  Aquarius Parking Lot

Music:  "Hundred Million" by Treble Charger

(2AM.  Bryan is walking out to his car.  The Angry Guy from before is waiting for him.)

Angry Guy:  I told you I'd be back, Bitch.

Bryan:  Your mistake, baby.

(Bryan turns to face the guy.  The guy throws a few punches at Bryan, who blocks them.  Bryan lands a kick on the guy.  One of the Angry Guy's friend's hits Bryan in the back with a plank of wood, sending him into a parked car.  Angry Guy grabs Bryan, spins him around and lands a punch.  The friend pins Bryan against the car by holding the plank of wood across his shoulders.  Angry Guy punches Bryan in the stomach repeatedly.  Bryan gets free, kicks Angry Guy and jumps on top of the car while the friend swings the board, missed Bryan and breaks the car window.  They fight some more.  Bryan eventually wins.  He reaches for his eye and winces.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(The class is in a circle in the center of the room moving counterclockwise.)

Tom:  Waist towards the center.  That's good Ali.  Round your back out a bit more.  That's it.

(Bryan enters wearing sunglasses.  Tom sees him.)

Tom:  Good.  That's all for today.

(Tom leads Bryan outside by the waterfront.  He's angry.)

Tom:  You were supposed to help me with that class.

Bryan:  I know.

Tom:  Let’s have a look.

Bryan:  Nah, it's, it's nothing.

Tom:  No, come on.  Let's see.

(Tom takes Bryan's glasses off.  Bryan's left eye is swollen shut.)

Tom:  What happened?

(We see that Bryan's right knuckles are beat up pretty badly too.)

Bryan:  (sighs) I won.

(Cut to slightly later.  Tom and Bryan are still outside by the waterfront only now Tom is leaning against the railing and Bryan is walking across the deck.)

Bryan:  I had this guy easy.  Until his friend jumped in.  That was cheep.

Tom:  So you won, but you don't feel good about it.

Bryan:  No.

Tom:  Why not?

Bryan:  Maybe because you're gonna tell me I was trying to force the issue.

Tom:  Were you?

Bryan:  Look, he was the one who called me out.  He was waitin' there for me, I had no choice.

Tom:  You had the choice to take the job in the first place.

Bryan:  It just seemed like a good idea at the time.

Tom:  Well maybe you don't belong in that job.  Maybe it's just not for you?

Bryan:  It's just like in class.  I wasn't being centered.

Tom:  You just learned the most important lesson.

Bryan:  What's that?

Tom:  It's not about who you beat out there.  It's about learning who you are, in here. (taps his heart)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Street Side

(Tom exits the building and a Man approaches him)

Man:  Tom Chang.

Tom:  Yeah.

Man:  I work for Phillip Rodgers.  I need you to come with me.

Tom:  What for?

Man:  It's very important.  It concerns your daughter.

Tom:  My daughter?

Scene:  Dam

(There are a lot of trucks hauling materials around.  Tom and the Man pull in and get out of the car.  Tom gets out of the back seat.  They walk a distance to where Phillip is waiting for them.  Two more of Phillip's men join them on the way.)

Phillip:  No one ever got lucky underestimating me, Tom.  I started out as a day laborer pouring cement.  Now I have 500 full time employees.  I didn't get to where I am by being a pushover or anybody's fool.

(Phillip takes an envelope out of his inside jacket pocket.)

Phillip:  I believe that this is yours.

(Phillip opens the envelope and pours out the necklace that Tom gave Claire.  It looks like it's in pieces.)

Phillip:  It's a shame.  I hope you had insurance.  Claire isn't yours anymore.

Tom:  Claire is my daughter.  I'm not going anywhere.

Phillip:  Go home.  Think about it.  (to the men.)  Show him out.

(A man grabs Tom's shoulder.  Tom reacts and flips him and kicks a guy about to make a move on him.  They fight and Tom knocks them to the ground.)

Tom:  It doesn't have to be this way, Phillip.  I can find my way out.

Scene:  Marina Park High Hallway

(Bryan is walking and Tory comes up behind him)

Tory:  Hey.

Bryan:  Hey.

Tory:  How's it going?

Bryan:  I'm kinda stressed out right now, Tory.  Look, first, I get into a fight with this guy,  then the owner of the club is blaming me because some psycho ripped apart the men's room.  Like I'm responsible for washroom security.

Tory:  This was last night?

Bryan:  Yeah.

(Tory gets angry, clearly thinking it was Mark.  She starts walking faster.)

Bryan:  Tory.

Tory:  I gotta make a call.

Scene:  Marina Park High- Outdoor Courtyard

(Tory is on her cell phone.)

Bryant:  (on the phone)  SFPD office, this is Bryant.

Tory:  Hey Danny, it's Tory Stratton.

(The phone call switches between Tory at school and Bryant at his desk.)

Bryant:  (happy to hear from her.)  Hey, how ya been?

Tory:  I'm breathing.  How's it going?

Bryant:  Oh, it's not the same around here without your old man.

Tory:  Thanks.  Listen Danny, can you do me a favor?

Scene:  Marina Park

(Mark is taking pictures of Ali practicing.)

Mark:  Oh Ali, you're great.

(Ali starts laughing and Mark snaps a picture of her.)

Ali:  Sorry.

Mark:  No no no no that's what I want.  I wanna, I wanna capture your personality.

(Ali grabs onto a branch of a sculpture thing and swings her legs up.  She lets one arm dangle down.)

Mark:  Again again again again.  Forget about me, just forget about me.

Ali:  This is harder than it looks, you know.  Keeping concentration.

Mark:  Yeah well you are a natural.

(Ali is not hanging by her knees)

Mark:  Forget about me.  Play, just play.

(Mark takes some more pictures)

Mark:  I'm gonna run outa film here.

(Ali loses her grip and falls the ground, laughing.  Mark runs over to her to make sure she's alright.)

Mark:  Are you okay?

Ali:  I'm a little cold.  (she's in a tank top and he's wearing a jacket.)

Mark:  Alright, we'll call it then.

Ali:  This was fun.

Mark:  Yeah.  You need a ride?

Ali:  No, I've got my bike.

Mark:  You sure?  (Ali nods)  I've got my truck, we can just throw it in the back.  I got a rack.  Come on.  (puts his arm around Ali and they start walking.)

Scene:  Outside Street

(It's raining.  Tory is sitting on her motorcycle dialing her cell.  The phone rings and Ali's voicemail kicks in.)

Ali's Voicemail:  Hi, sorry I missed you.  Here comes the beep.

Tory:  Ali, it's Tory.  Listen, I did some checking.  Mark's got a record.  He sexually assaulted somebody.  Please call me.  My number is 555-0179.

(Tory sighs and put her phone in her pocket)

Scene:  Mark's House

(Still raining.  Tory pulls her bike up to his driveway and stops.  She tries to open the door but it's locked.  She looks in to make sure that no one's there and then spots a window open a crack.  She lifts it up and slips inside.

Tory:  Hello?!  Anybody here?

(Tory walks through the house and makes it to Mark's dark room.  She looks around and sees photos on the wall of Ali.  Photos that look like they were taken without her permission.  Then she sees photos of herself as well.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Mark's Truck

(He and Ali are on their way to his place.)

Mark:  So my parents are both oil company executives and they're in Venezuela until July so right now I'm living at their house.  It's two streets down if you wanna go get a quick cup of coffee to warm up.

Ali:  Okay.

Mark:  Cool.

(Ali grabs her cell and checks her messages.)

Cell Phone:  You have one new message.

Tory:  Ali, it's Tory.  Listen, I did some checking.  Mark's got a record.  He sexually assaulted somebody.  Please call me.  My number is 555-0179.

(Mark pulls up in front of his house.  Ali is slightly panicking.)

Ali:  My friend just called.  She needs me to Xerox this assignment for her so I really gotta go.  But thanks for the offer of the coffee and everything.  I think I'll just ride my bike from here.  Okay?

(Ali tried to get out but finds that Mark locked the door.)

Mark:  I really don't think you should believe everything your friend tells you, Ali.  Cuz it's not true and-

Ali:  Open the damn doors.

Mark:  Hey!

(Ali jumps and pulls on the door handle some more.)

Mark:  You need to calm down, okay.

(Ali punches him in the nose, reaches over and unlocks the doors and bolts down the sidewalk.)

Mark:  Ali!

Scene:  Mark's Dark Room

(Tory hears Mark and goes into the next room to look out a window.  She sees him walking up the front path.  He comes in, blocking her escape out.  She hides in the bathroom, keeping the door open a crack to keep an eye on him.  Mark sees the open window and closes it.  He starts walking upstairs.  Tory closes the door more.)

Mark:  Hello?

(Mark goes into the bathroom.  Tory's out of sight, hiding in the tub.  Mark leaves.)

Scene:  Outside

(Ali has stopped running and pulls out her cell phone and starts dialing Tory's number.)

Music:  "Bring Me To Live: By Evanescence.

Scene:  Mark's Bathroom

(Tory answers her phone in a whisper.  I'm assuming it was on vibrate.)

Tory:  Yeah?

Ali:  (over phone)  Hey, I got your message about Mark.  Where are you?

Tory:  I'm in his house.

(Cut to Ali on the sidewalk)

Ali:  What?  You've gotta get out of there.

(Cut to Tory hiding)

Tory:  Yeah, I know.  That was my plan.  Call 911.  I gotta go.

Ali:  Okay.

(They hang up.  Ali calls the police.  Tory sneaks out of the bathroom.  Ali runs back to Mark's house.  Tory starts snaking down the stairs.  A stair creaks and she looks behind her.  Mark, in his dark room, comes running.  Tory makes it to the front door but it's locked.  Mark catches up with her and grabs her from behind.)

Mark:  What are you doing here?

Tory:  Get away from me.

Mark:  I ASKED YOU A QUESTION!

(Tory takes a swing at him and they fight.  He pins her face-first to a wall from behind.)

Mark:  You don't wanna be playing like this.  You're in my house!

(He throws her and she flies across the counter, landing on the other side.  She stays on the ground collecting herself.  Mark slowly walks around the counter.  He positions himself so that his feet are on either side of her hips.  Tory pushes up and strikes him in the back with her foot and then while he's distracted, grabs his ankles and drops him to the floor.  She starts to run but he kicks her.  She loses her balance just long enough for Mark to stand up and grab a knife.  He swings it at her a few times but she ducks.  Eventually he gets her back pinned to the refrigerator.)

Mark:  Not so tough now, are ya?

(Ali kicks the front door down.)

Ali:  Tory!

Tory:  Ali, help me!

(Mark gets distracted long enough for Tory to spin around and elbow him in the head.  Ali kicks the hand that's holding the knife.  Mark grabs Ali by the neck and pushes her against the wall but Tory kicks him in the side and he lets Ali go.  He rounds on Tory and she blocks a few more hits, as does Ali.  Eventually, they grab his arms and hold him face first against the wall.  Tory lands a kick to the back of his neck, knocking him out.  Mark slumps to the floor.  Both girls are breathing heavily.)

Scene:  Tom's Kitchen

(Master Li is looking over the necklace.)

Master Li:  It won't be what it was, but it can be fixed.

Tom:  Maybe this is gonna be more complicated than I thought.

Master Li:  Hmm.

Tom:  Now you're gonna tell me I should have waited, right?

Master Li:  No.  I was gonna tell you to buy some super glue.

(Tom shakes his head, slightly amused.)

Scene:  Tom's Living Room

(It the next day and Claire walks in and looks around)

Claire:  Dad?  Dad?

(Tom sets down his tea pot and comes out of the kitchen.

Tom:  Hi.

Claire:  I know I shouldn't be here.

Tom:  It's okay.  Have a seat.

(They sit)

Claire:  I overheard mom and Phillip fighting.  He seemed pretty angry.  He really likes to get his way.

Tom:  I noticed.

Claire:  I still wanna keep you in my life.

Tom:  I'm not going anywhere.

Claire:  Promise me something?  Promise you won't give up on seeing me?

Tom:  I promise.

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Waterfront

Music:  "Wave Goodbye" by Steadman

(Ali and Tory are outside.  Tory is holding Ali's foot while she stretches.)

Ali:  I should have listened to you.  I'm sorry.

Tory:  Don't blame yourself.  That's ridiculous.

Ali:  I really appreciate you being there for me.

Tory:  Anytime.  (long pause)  Do you think I made a mistake?

Ali:  With what?

Tory:  With Trip?

Ali:  You think it's too late?

Tory:  I don't know.  (beat)  He's a good guy, isn't he?

Ali:  Yeah, he is.  Bust honestly, my judgement about men is a little off this week so. . .

(They laugh)

Tory:  Are you ready?

(Ali nods and Tory lets go of Ali's foot.  They start to head inside.)

Ali:  Let's do it.

(The girls start practicing their forms in the main practice room together.  Bryan and Trip are watching from above.)

Bryan:  Tory's gonna take her down.  She's got to.

Trip:  I don't think so.

Bryan:  So it's over between you two?

Trip:  Yeah, it's over.

(Tom joins them.)

Tom:  Hey guys, what's up?

Trip:  Hey.

Bryan:  Nothing.  We were just observing their technique.

Tom:  (doubtful)  Right.

(Shot of Tory and Ali practicing.)

Tom:  They look good together.

(Trip and Bryan smile and nod)

Tom:  Because they practice.

(Trip and Bryan stop smiling.)

(Cut to Tory and Ali down below)

Tory:  They're watching us.

Ali:  I know.

Tory:  It'd freak 'em out if I took you out right now.

Ali:  Well just so you know, I'm not going down without a fight.

Tory:  Good girl.

(Tom smiles.)
