Scene:  Party

Music:  "Gotta Get Thru This" by Daniel Bedingfield

(There's a bonfire outside.  People are all over the place.)

Julian:  (To his friend who's just getting there)  What's up, dawg?  Beer and margaritas are inside.  Get your butt in there.

(Bryan's DJing the party.  Ali and Nick are dancing.  Trip and Tory are together as well, leaning against a wall.  Trip says something to Tory, but it's inaudible over the music.  Nick grabs Ali's hand and pulls her over to them.  As they're moving through the crowd, a girl calls out to Nick.)

Riley:  Hey Nick!

Nick:  What's up?  (Isn't interested.)

Ali:  Why aren't you guys dancing?

Tory:  I'm trying to get him out there.

Trip:  I can't.

Tory:  Everybody can dance.

(Tory grabs Trip's hand and leads him to the dance floor.)

Tory:  Come on.

(Nick and Ali are left by the drinks.)

Nick:  Margarita?  (He takes one for himself.)

Ali:  No thanks.  I don't drink.

Nick:  Maybe you should start.  Fresh lime.

Ali:  (Flirtatiously)  Are you trying to get me in trouble?

Nick:  If you're with me, you already are in trouble.

Ali:  It's hot. . .in here.  You wanna go outside?

(Nick takes a sip of his drink and follows her.)

Scene:  Outside

(Nick and Ali are sitting by the bon fire.)

Ali:  It's beautiful out here.

(Ali rests her head on Nick's shoulder.)

Nick:  Tell me about it.

(Turns his head so he and Ali are less than an inch apart.  They're about to kiss before Damon interrupts him.)

Damon:  Excuse me, who invited you here?

Nick:  I didn't know I needed a formal invitation.

Ali:  I invited him.

Damon:  Are you with him now?

Ali:  Damon, just leave us alone.

Nick:  (Stands up.)  Yeah dude, chill out.

(Damon punches Nick.  The kicks him when he's down.)

Damon:  Come on, get up!

(Nick gets up and flips Damon over his shoulder.  Damon gets up and takes something out of his pocket and advances on Nick.  Ali sees him.)

Ali:  Hey!  Stop it!

(Damon sprays Nick in the eyes with pepper spray.)

Ali:  Oh my God!

(Ali goes to Nick while he screams in pain.)

Scene:  Bathroom

(Nick is rinsing his eyes and Ali is with him.  Nick dries his eyes with a towel.)

Ali:  You're sure you're okay?

Nick:  I can see again.  It's a start.  Do you have any other psycho ex-boyfriends you wanna tell me about?

Ali:  We only went out a few times, he was never even really a boyfriend.  It was just bizarre, I have never seen him act like that.

(Julian and three friends barge into the bathroom.)

Julian:  You need to get the hell out of my house.

Ali:  Why don't you kick Damon out?

Julian:  Because Damon is my best friend.

Nick:  Fine.  I was leaving anyway.

Ali:  Hey, wait for me.  I'm gonna go tell the guys I'm leaving.  Okay?

(Ali leaves.)

Nick:  No, just stay.

(He follows Ali, the guys pushing him as he walks by.)

Scene:  Drinks Table

(Trip is fixing himself a drink and Tory is next to him.)

Trip:  Want one?

Tory:  No, I don't want any.

Ali:  Hi.

Tory:  Hey, what happened?  I heard there was a fight.

Ali:  Yeah.  Nick and Damon.

Tory:  Where's Nick?

Ali:  He took off.  Look, I'm gonna go too.  Suddenly I don't feel very welcome here.

(From outside, someone screams.  Ali, Trip and Tory run outside.)

Scene:  Outside

(There's a body on the ground with a blood stain on his shirt.  Someone goes to take his pulse.)

Kid:  I think he's dead.

Crowd Member:  Is that Damon?

Riley:  No!  (She runes to him.)  Oh my God.  Oh my God, someone call 911!

(Tory pulls out her cell phone.)

Tory:  We have an emergency!  (To anyone around her.)  What's the address guys?  I need an address!

[Opening Credits]

Scene:  Outside The Party

(A police officer is talking to Ali, Tory, Trip and Bryan.)

Officer:  You're all friends with this boy, Nick?

Bryan:  We're in classes with him, yeah.

Officer:  And he had a fight tonight with Damon?

(Tory nods)

Officer:  Is there always animosity between these two?

Ali:  No, I don't think so.  I mean, Nick's new at this school.  I don't think they really even knew each other.

Trip:  Actually, I uh saw them having an argument.  It was in the locker room after gym class.

Officer:  What was this argument about?

Trip:  I don't know.  It was nothing.  Nick left some wet towels on Damon's bench.  They exchanged insults.  I kinda got the feeling Damon didn't like him very much.

Officer:  Nick ever mention this to you?

Ali:  No.

Officer:  Someone said you used to date Damon.

Ali:  Yeah.

Officer:  When was this?

Ali:  Like. .. six months ago.  We just went out for a little while.  I was going to a different school back then.

Officer:  Now you date Nick?

Ali:  No, we're just friends.

Officer:  Yeah, okay.  Anyone know where Nick is now?

(They all shake their heads.)

Scene:  Inside The House

(Tory and Trip enter.  There are cops all over the house.)

Tory:  Why did you say that?

Trip:  He's a police officer, do you think I should have lied?

Tory:  You didn't have to say anything.

Trip:  Hey, why should I protect Nick?  He's dangerous, he's totally manipulative, he's got a violent temper, he's a liar.  He totally could have got Bryan killed with that whole Fight Club scam.

Tory:  Be quiet, they'll hear you.  That doesn't make him a murderer.

Trip:  You sure about that?

(Ali walks away from Trip and he follows her.  Ali enters the house on her cell phone and goes partway up the stairs for some privacy.)

Nick's Voicemail:  Hey, this is Nick.  Leave me a message.

Ali:  Nick, it's Ali.  Where are you?  Listen, the police are looking for you.  Something's happened and Damon's dead.

(Down below Ali, Riley is crying and an officer comforts her.)

Ali:  Okay just call me as soon as you get this message, okay?

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Nick and Tom are there looking out a window.)

Nick:  I'm telling you the truth.  I didn't kill him.  But given the circumstance, I'm not surprised they think I did.

Tom:  You should call a lawyer in the morning.  I'll give you a name.

Nick:  I'm sorry for waking you up.  My Aunt has been out of town for a week and I didn't know where else to go.

(The doorbell rings.)

Tom:  Stay here.

(Tom grabs his jacket and slides the glass door open, stepping out onto a balcony that overlooks the front door.)

Tom:  Uh yeah, can I help you?

Inspector:  Inspector Vargas SFPD, are you Tom Chang?

Tom:  Yeah.

Inspector:  I hear you have a student named Nick Reed and he may be here.

Tom:  Yeah, he's here.

Inspector:  Good.  Let me in.

Tom:  No, you got a warrant?

Inspector:  Look, I have a half a dozen witnesses who saw this kid get in an altercation with another boy who is now very dead.  I need to talk to him, hear his story.

Tom:  Alright, well unless you got a warrant you can't come in.  This kid hasn't even seen a lawyer yet.

(Nick comes down the stairs.)

Nick:  I didn't do it!  Damon pepper sprayed me, that is all that happened.

Tom:  Go back upstairs, Nick!

Inspector:  You won't talk to me, you run from the crime scene, you're making it that much worse for yourself, son.

Nick:  I didn't run, alright!  I left the party.

Tom:  Nick, get back inside.  Go.

(Nick does.)

Inspector:  Nick, get back here.  Get back here, Nick!

Tom:  Go!

Inspector:  Okay, fine.  No problem.  We'll play it the hard way.

Tom:  Fine.  Inspector, you do what you gotta do.  I'm going to bed, okay?

Inspector:  Okay, good night.

Scene:  Marina Park High- Lockers

(Many students are upset and in tears.  Tory, Ali, Trip and Bryan are all standing around in a group while Tory and Bryan pull books out of their lockers.)

Tory:  I've already heard like, fifteen different versions of what happened.

Ali:  Has anybody seen Nick?

Bryan:  It doesn't look good.  Him not showing for school like this.

Ali:  We should try to help him.

Trip:  How are we supposed to do that?

Tory:  We're on our way to Chemistry, that should be interesting.  Damon was in that class.

Bryan:  I was hoping they would cancel.  See, I didn't completely finish this assignment.  (He gets dirty looks from the rest of them.)  Maybe I shouldn't have said that out loud.

Tory:  Come on, let's go.

Scene:  Chemistry Class

(Tory and Bryan are sitting at a lab table in the back of the room.)

Tory:  How weird is that?  He was here on Friday and now he's just gone.

Bryan:  I know.  Check out Ethan, his lab partner.

(They look at a table a row over and two up from theirs.  Ethan is sitting alone, drawing in a sketch book.  He looks back and Bryan and Tory quickly look away.)

Teacher:  Good morning everyone.  I assume that you all heard about the terrible tragedy that occurred over the weekend.  Damon was a special person and he will be missed greatly.  We have grief counselors available in the student lounge.  Continue to work on your lab reports.  I'll be coming around to each lab group individually.

(Two girls get up and leave the room to go talk to the counselors.  Tory gets up and goes over to Ethan.)

Tory:  It's a little freaky, isn't it.

Ethan:  Yeah, especially 'cuz those girls weren't even friends with Damon.

Tory:  Did you know him?  Outside of class, I mean.

Ethan:  Yeah, I helped tutor him.

(Tory sees his sketch.  It's a man holding a knife over a bunch of skulls.)

Tory:  Hey, that's cool what you're drawing.

(Ethan quickly puts the book away.)

Ethan:  Thanks.

Tory:  Well, you're going to need a new lab partner.  If you want, you can work with me and Bryan.

Ethan:  Great.

(Ethan slowly gathers hit books and goes back to Tory and Bryan's table.  Bryan stands up.)

Bryan:  What's up, man?  Uh, you can have this seat, I, I'll get another one.

Scene:  School Waterfront

(Riley is sitting on a ledge facing the waterfront by the school.  Ali walks up and sits down next to her.)

Ali:  Are you okay?

Riley:  Yeah, I'm fine.  (She wipes tears from her eyes.)  Thanks for asking.

Ali:  I can't believe he's gone.

Riley:  Yeah.  (A beat.)  We had all these plans together.  We were supposed to go to Princeton this fall and we were talking about backpacking across Europe.  I don't know what I'm gonna do without him.  Listen to me, I'm like a widow at seventeen.

Ali:  I just, I wish that there was something I could say to make you feel better.

Riley:  Yeah.

Ali:  If there's anything, um, I know you barely know me but. . .

Riley:  Thanks.  So I hear the police think it was Nick Reed.

Ali:  I was with him that night and I don't believe he would do something like this.

Riley:  Yeah, I know him.  He's in my history class.  Listen um, I should get to class.  It's kinda good to talk to someone though.  Thank you.

Ali:  I'll see you later.  Bye.

Scene:  Marina Park High- Hallway

(Nick is walking down the hall and walks past Damon's locker.  It's covered with pictures of him and people are leaving flowers at the base of it.  People watch him as he walks by.  Two geeky guys stare for just a little too long.)

Nick:  Can I help you?

(They run off.  Nick shakes his head and then sees Ali at her locker.)

Nick:  Hey.  I got your message.  Thanks.

Ali:  What happened to you?  Where'd you got after the party?

Nick:  Nowhere.  I went and got a cup of coffee at this place on Harrison.

(Julian and his friends confront Nick.)

Julian:  What the hell are you doing here?

Nick:  Last time I checked, this is where I go to school.

Julian:  Are you trying to make a joke?

Nick:  No.  What's your problem?

Julian:  You killed my best friend!  That's my problem.  I don't see how you have to nerve to saunter into school like nothing's happened.

Nick:  I didn't kill your friend.

Julian:  Now you're gonna lie to me.

(Julian pushes Nick backwards into the lockers and then decks him.  Ali puts herself between Nick and Julian.)

Ali:  Just stop it.

(Julian's friends pull her away and hold her back.)

Friend:  Stay out of it!

(Julian punches Nick again.)

Nick:  (In surprise and pain.)  Oh.

(Julian grabs Nick and holds him against the lockers with his forearm against Nick's neck.)

Julian:  Get up.

(Bryan forces his way through the crowd.)

Bryan:  Hey!  Hey, let him go!

Nick:  Are we done yet?  'Cuz I'm late for class.

Friend:  (To Bryan)  You stay outa this.

(Friend pushes Bryan and Bryan deflects him, sending him into the crowd of onlookers.  Another guy tries to stop Bryan, but gets sent flying.  The Friend gets up and grabs Bryan from behind, trying to hold down him arms while the other guy gets back up as well.  Bryan defends himself and sends them sliding into the crowd again.  He gets closer to Nick, who's still pinned against a locker by Julian.)

Bryan:  I said, let him go!

Julian:  You want some of this?

(Julian lets go of Nick to fight Bryan.  Ali breaks free and gets to Nick.)

Onlooker:  Hey, teachers are coming!

(Julian and Bryan stop fighting.  Julian grabs Nick on his way by.  Nick has a bloody nose.)

Julian:  You'll get yours, dude.

(Julian keeps walking.)

Bryan:  Hey, you okay?

Nick:  I'll live.

(They walk away.  Ali looks over her shoulder at the three teaches coming down the hall and walks a little faster.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Julian's House.  Party

(Flashback to the party.)

Ali:  Why aren't you guys dancing?

Tory:  I'm trying to get him out there.

Trip:  I can't.

(Cut to Tory and Trip dancing.)

Tory:  Everybody can dance.

(A few more shots of them dancing.  Somehow, Trip managed to lose his shirt in one.)

(Cut to the drinks table.  Shot of someone slicing a lime in half.)

Nick:  Margarita?

Ali:  Are you trying to get me in trouble?

Nick:  If you're with me, you already are in trouble.

(Nick takes a sip on follows Ali outside.  They're sitting by the bonfire.  Then Nick is getting pepper sprayed in the eyes by Damon.)

Nick:  Ow!

(Someone is holding the knife that was used to slice the limes, in front of the fire.)

Nick:  Pepper spray, huh?  That's real brave.

(Nick stabs Damon with the knife)

Nick:  Do you feel brave now?

(The knife falls to the ground in a pool of blood.)

(Ali wakes up in bed.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(Tom is talking to his class.  They're all doing their exercises with blindfolds on.)

Tom:  Most forms of martial arts, the goal is to seek control of your opponent's body.  But in our art we look for something different.  We seek to control the empty spaces around our adversary.  To find the space your opponent occupies and the space that he or she doesn't.  Feel it.  Learn to see what it unseen.  Okay, blindfolds off.  Look, I know everyone's feeling a bit um, distracted about what happened.

Tory:  Yeah, no kidding.

Tom:  But just remember, talk is cheap.  Okay?  Like our lesson today, you have to learn to look beyond what seems evident.  Before you draw conclusions.  That's it for today.

Scene:  Tom's Office

(Ali and Tory go to see Tom after class.)

Ali:  Hey Mr. C.

Tory:  Can we talk to you for a sec?

Tom:  What's up?

Ali:  When you were a cop, how did you go about conducting a murder investigation?

Tom:  Hypothetically?

Tory:  Of course, hypothetically.

Ali:  Right, I mean we're not gonna get in the way of the police doing their jobs or anything.

Tom:  Alright, you start by learning everything you can about the victim.

Ali:  Like what?

Tom:  There's the Damon you knew and the Damon you didn't know.  And I'll bet you the motivation for the murder is related to the Damon you didn't know.

Scene:  Dumpsters Outside

(It's night.  Tory and Ali have flashlights.)

Tory:  Are you sure this is where Damon lived?

Ali:  Yeah, I used to come here all the time.  (Sees the dumpsters.)  Ugh.

Tory:  I was picturing garbage cans, Ali.

Ali:  Yeah.  Me too.

(Ali opens one lid of the dumpster and hoists herself in.)

Tory:  What are you doing?  That's straightjacket crazy.

Ali:  Okay.

Tory:  Don't think I'm getting in there with you.

Ali:  It's not that bad.

(She uses her flashlight to look around.)

Tory:  I don't even know if I like Nick.

Ali:  Do you want him to go to prison?

Tory:  Great.

(She opens the other half of the dumpster and looks in.)

Tory:  Move over.

(Ali does and Tory climbs in and groans.)

Ali:  I thought you were a tough chick.

Tory:  Well it doesn't mean I don't care about my personal hygiene.   What are we looking for, anyway?

Ali:  Trash from Damon's bedroom.

(They look around a little more.  Ali grabs a bag.)

Tory:  What's that?

Ali:  I don't know, but it smells like the kitchen.

(Ali opens it a recoils from the smell.)

Ali:  It's definitely the kitchen.  So what's up with you and Trip?

Tory:  He's annoying me.  Look, he hasn't liked Nick from the beginning, but to start saying things to the cops, it's like he wasn't Nick to be guilty.  Hey, check this out.  Damon's SAT scores.

Ali:  He got a combined 910.

Tory:  Don't you get like, 400 points just for signing your name?  Well, I thought he was applying to ivy league schools.

Ali:  He was.  Wait, I found something.

Tory:  What is it?

Ali:  A letter from Riley.

Tory:  His girlfriend?  Is it juicy?

Ali:  Oh my God.  'Dear Damon.  Since you refuse to take my phone calls, I'm writing you this letter.'

Scene:  Marina Park High

(Ali, Trip, Tory and Bryan are leaning against a railing outside.  Ali is reading the letter out loud, picking up where the last scene left off.)

Ali:  'I am so sorry that I strayed from you, however briefly.  Please believe me when I say it was meaningless.  I truly regret what I did.  I hope you can find a way to forgive me.  Love always, Riley.'

Bryan:  So he bombed the SATs and his girlfriend stepped out on him.  Dawg was having a rough month.

Trip:  Who'd she cheat with?

Ali:  Doesn't say.

Tory:  My guess is Julian.  The three of them were always together.

Ali:  Yeah, but then why would Damon show up at his party.  I mean, it just doesn't track.

Bryan:  Maybe it's someone we don't know.

Ali:  I just don't understand how he screwed up his SATs so badly.  It doesn't make any sense.

Tory:  Ethan was his tutor and now he's our lab partner so I'll just make a study date.

(Trip doesn't look to happy that she used the word 'date.'  The bell rings.)

Tory:  I got class.

Ali:  Alright.

Tory:  Later.

Ali:  See ya.

(Trip catches up with her.)

Trip:  Tory, Ethan could be dangerous.  Look, I don't like the idea of you being alone with him.  You could get hurt.

Tory:  Look, I appreciate your concern, but I can handle myself.

Trip:  Don't I have a say in this?

Tory:  Why?  'Cuz we went on a few dates and suddenly you can tell me what I can and can't do?

Trip:  I thought my opinion might mean something to you.

Scene:  Tom's Office

(Tom's phone rings and he answers.)

Tom:  Hello.  What?!  I don't understand.  Give me the address.  Okay, I'll be right there.

(Tom hangs up and leaves.)

Scene:  Boutique Store

Storeowner:  She entered with three other girls.  They looked suspicious from the get go and then your daughter, I observed her slip a container of raspberry lip gloss into her pocket.  I followed them outside where her friends ran off like a pack of wolves.

Tom:  Look I'm really sorry for this, okay?  And I'll handle it with her.  How much is the lip gloss?

Storeowner:  That is not the point.  This is an urgent matter Mr. Chang.  I don't care if it's lip gloss or a man in a stocking cap robbing the register.  It's stealing.

Tom:  Look, my daughter is an extremely well behaved, respectful. . .Forget it.  I don't have to justify to any police.  Just get my daughter now.

Scene:  Outside Sidewalk

Tom:  Now why did you do this?

Claire:  It was just a stupid thing.  Can we not talk about it?

Tom:  No.  We're gonna talk about it.

Claire:  You know, I called you because I thought you'd be more understanding than mom about this.

Tom:  Well, bad choice.

Claire:  It was a spur of the moment thing.  I mean, my friends egged me on.

Tom:  You have no reason to steal.  And I'm disappointed in you.  You understand this is bad?

Claire:  Yes.

Tom:  Claire, look at me.  You're not going to do this again.

Claire:  No.  I'm sorry.  It won't ever happen again.

Tom:  Alright.  Good.  Tell me something, why lip gloss? Do you have a boyfriend or something?

Claire:  Oh my God, no!  That's totally personal anyway.

Tom:  I'm your father!

Claire:  Exactly my point.

(She closes the car door and buckles her seatbelt.  Tom goes around to the other side of the car.)

Scene:  Marina Park High- Hallway

(Riley is walking through the crowd and Ali is following her.)

Ali:  Hey.

(Riley turns and stops.)

Riley:  Hey.

Ali:  I was just wondering if you can explain this.

(Ali shows her the letter.  Riley tries to grab the letter.)

Riley:  How did you-

(Ali snatches it back)

Riley:  Wait, where did you get that?

Ali:  It doesn't matter.  I was just wondering if you'd shared the information with the police.

Riley:  What information?

Ali:  That fact that you cheated on Damon.

Riley:  I don't see how it's their business or yours.  This is really inappropriate.  Why are you doing this?

Ali:  Nick is my friend.  I'm just trying to help him.  If you slept with someone else, like Julian, wouldn't it be logical that Damon would wanna get revenge on that person?  I mean, maybe the situation backfired and that's how he ended up dead.

Riley:  I'm telling you Ali, stay out of this.

Ali:  Fine, I'll let the police figure it  out.

(Ali walks away.)

Riley:  I care about Nick too.

(Ali turns around.)

Ali:  What?

Riley:  That's who I slept with.  It was just one time and it was a total mistake.  I never should have told Damon 'cuz it shattered him but I can't take that back now.

Ali:  When.

Riley:  Two weeks ago.  Look, I don't think Nick killed Damon either, but if the cops find out that we slept together do you think it's gonna look good for him?  Go to the cops if you want, but you should be prepared to deal with the consequences.

(Ali throws the letter at Riley and walks away, trying to digest what she just learned.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Marina Park High

(Stairs outside.  Nick is standing on a landing between flights, leaning on a railing, when Ali finds him.)

Ali:  You lied to me.  I'm trying to help you here and you won't even tell me the truth.

Nick:  What are you talking about?

Ali:  You slept with her.

Nick:  Who?

Ali:  Riley!

Nick:  Who said that?

Ali:  She did.

Nick:  It's a total lie.

Ali:  Then why did she say it?

Nick:  I don't know.  She wanted to, it never happened.  What, you're gonna believe her over me?

(Ali shrugs)

Nick:  Fine.  I slept with Riley.  And I killed Damon.  (Screams)  I am responsible for global warming!  Happy now?

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Tom is walking down the stairs when he hears Master Li.  He moves towards his voce.)

Master Li:  The key is footwork and balance, Claire.

Claire:  Like this?

Master Li:  Yes.  Right quickly, fist and feet together.  Now, go for the kill!

(We see that they are playing video games.)

Claire:  I got you.  I knocked your arm off.

Master Li:  This is why I prefer Madden Football.

(Tom bends down so he's face to face with Claire.)

Claire:  Hi.

Tom:  Hi.  I called your mom.  She's on her way over to pick you up.

Claire:  She's gonna kill me.

Tom:  Don't worry.  She's knows we already talked.  She'll be alright.

Claire:  Thanks Dad.

Scene:  Ethan's Room

(Tory and Ethan enter.)

Tory:  I didn't quite get the explanation that Mrs. Heart gave us about what an ester is.

Ethan:  Well, it's not that hard.  And ester is a chemical compound that forms when an organic acid reacts with an alcohol.

Tory:  And the big thing is they have distinctive smells, right?

Ethan:  Most of 'em, yeah.

Ethan's Mom:  (Of Screen)  Ethan, telephone!

Ethan:  Take a message, Mom!  (To Tory.)  Sorry.

Tory:  No problem.

Ethan's Mom:  (OS)  He says it's important.  I'm leaving the phone for you in the kitchen.

Ethan:  I'll be right back.

(The minute he leaves, Tory starts searching through the room.)

Scene:  Kitchen

(Ethan picks up the phone.  They do a split screen with him and Bryan talking.)

Ethan:  Yeah?

Bryan:  Hey you Ethan, how you doing brother?

Ethan:  Who is this?

Bryan:  Bryan, your lab partner.  Hey look, I got a couple of questions about the homework.

(Bryan's side of the screen is replaced with Tory searching his room.)

Ethan:  Look, this is kind of a bad time.  Let me call you back.

Bryan:  Hey no, wait a minute.  Look, we're all in this together, man.  The least you can do is take a minute off to answer a couple of questions.  Or maybe I should tell Tory you wouldn't help me.

Ethan:  Okay.  What is it, hurry.

(Split screen again.  Ethan's at the top right, Bryan's at the bottom right and Tory is the entire left half.)

Bryan:  Alright alright, I'm confused about the alcanes and the isomers.

Ethan:  For the homework tomorrow all you gotta to know are that alcanes are simple hydrocarbons and for the isomer question see the structural question of 3 ethelhexane on page 421.  I gotta go.

(Bryan looks at the phone in shock that Ethan just hung up on him.)

Scene:  Ethan's Room

(Tory finds a driver's license just as Ethan enters.)

Ethan:  What are you doing?

Tory:  Where did you get this?

(Ethan goes to grab it, but Tory blocks him and throws him over his bed onto the floor.)

Ethan:  Okay, alright.  I use it to buy beer, okay?

Tory:  Oh yeah?  Then why does it have Damon's name on it.  It's says you're only eighteen.

Ethan:  Get out of my house.

Tory:  Or what?

(Ethan grabs something off his desk and throws it at Tory, who ducks.)

Ethan:  Get out!

Ethan's Mom:  Ethan, what's going on up there?

Tory:  Fine.  I'll just go tell the cops.

(Tory grabs the ID and leaves.)

Ethan:  No you won't.

Scene:  Marina Park High- Pool

(Tory is swimming laps when someone turns off all the lights.  She gets out of the pool.  Ethan comes up from behind.)

Ethan:  You can't tell the cops.

(Tory jumps in fear and surprise.)

Ethan:  You can't ruin my chances to go to MIT.

Tory:  What do you mean?

Ethan:  I know you probably think I had something to do with Damon's murder.  The reason I had the ID with Damon's name on it is 'cuz I took his SATs for him.

Tory:  You took Damon's SATs?

Ethan:  Yeah, and Julian's too.

Tory:  I saw Damon's score.  It was 910.

Ethan:  Yep.

Tory: What about Julian?

Ethan:  He got a 1590.  I missed one of the English Comp questions.

Tory:  You bombed Damon's test on purpose?  Why would you do that?

Scene:  Coffee Shop

(Tory and Ali find seats outside.)

Tory:  No only did he take the SATs for Damon and Julian, but Julian paid him to Damon's test.

Ali:  See, I don't get it.  'Cuz Riley told me she wanted to go to Princeton with Damon.

Tory:  But now Julian's going off to Princeton with Riley.

Ali:  Oh my God.  Julian must have killed Damon to be with Riley.  Nick can't be the killer.  Riley is helping frame him.

Tory:  It looks that way, doesn't it?

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Waterfront

(Nick is working out his aggressions on a punching bag.  Ali comes to talk to him.)

Ali:  Hey.  I'm sorry I doubted you.  I believe you now.

Nick:  (Keeps punching.)  It's alright.  I don't blame you.  I'm used to being seen in a certain way, you know?  See, what happens is, people put this label on you and you just start to become it.

Ali:  I can see how that happens.

(Nick stops punching and he's breathing hard.  Ali leans on the punching back.)

Nick:  Can I ask you a question?

Ali:  Sure.

Nick:  Why are you helping me, Ali?  You hardly even know me.

Ali:  It's true.

Nick:  No one ever believe me.  Not even my own parents.

Ali:  Let's just say you getting framed and spending the rest of your life in jail kind of rubs my sense of justice the wrong way.

(Nick moves closer to her like he's going to kiss her.)

Nick:  That's it?

(Ali moves closer to him as well.)

Ali:  That's not enough?

Nick:  Thanks.

Ali:  Sure.

(Ali walks away without kissing him.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Hallway

(Trip is getting a drink out of a refrigerator when Tory comes up to him.)

Tory:  Hey.

Trip:  Hey, there you are.  I've been trying to call you.

Tory:  Oh yeah, I had my phone turned off.

Trip:  Well I was worried.  How'd it go with Ethan?

Tory:  Fine.  I'll tell you after class.  Sorry I didn't check in.

Trip:  (Confused.)  No problem.

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(Two boys are fighting with swords in the center of the room with Tom, Master Li and the rest of the class watching.  When they finish, everyone claps for them.)

Master Li:  Very good.  Both of you.  Robert, after you make your swing, move!  You don't have time to admire your handiwork.  Huh?

(Robert nods, taking the advice.)

Master Li:  Louis, remember:  Economy of motion.  By the time you swing way over here (Gestures to his far right)  your opponent is already here. (Gestures to his left.)

(Inspector Vargas barges in.)

Inspector:  You wanted a warrant?  (Shows it to Tom.)  I got it right here.  An arrest warrant for Nick Reed.  We found the murder weapon and we got forensic evidence tying it right to him.

(Nick turns to Ali.)

Nick:  I'm sorry.  I'm sorry.

(Nick bolts out the door and the inspector runs after him.)

Inspector:  Hey, hey wait!

(Ali follows)

Ali:  Nick!

Inspector:  Move!

(Ali flattens herself against the wall and gets out the Inspector's way.  Tom is right behind him.  They chase Nick down the street.)

Inspector:  Stop running Reed, or I swear to God I'll shoot!

(Nick chances a glance behind him but keeps running.)

Inspector:  Stop right now!

(Vargas draws his gun and shoots Nick in the shoulder.  Nick goes down.)

[Commercial Break[

Scene:  Tom's Apartment

(Ali, Trip, Bryan and Tory are there waiting for Tom.)

Tom:  I was just at the hospital.  Nick's gonna be okay.  He was shot in the shoulder.  It was a superficial wound.

Tory:  When can we see him?

Tom:  You can't.  He was transferred downtown to a jail ward.

Tory:  This is ridiculous.  He didn't do it.

Bryan:  Yeah, what's their evidence?

Tom:  They found a knife in the bushes with Nick's blood on it.

Ali:  At the party, Damon hit him in the nose.  There was a towel in the bathroom with his blood on it.  Somebody could have just wiped the blood on the murder weapon and thrown it in the bushes.

Trip:  Who would do that?

Tory:  You really think he did it.

Trip:  Well look at the evidence.  I'm sorry, but his blood is on the knife.

Tom:  How many of you think Nick did it?

(Trip is the only one to raise his hand.)

Tom:  Alright, if all the evidence is pointing to Nick, why don't more of you have your hands up?

Bryan:  Because it just doesn't feel right.  At least not to me.

Tom:  So you have this sense there's something else so, what is it?  What are you not seeing?  What are the police not seeing?

Tory:  What they're not seeing is it's gotta be Julian.  He's got motive.

Trip:  You don't kill someone over SAT scores.

Tory:  No, but people kill each other all the time over jealousy and love.

Tom:  Okay, let me ask you this:  How many of you think Julian did it?

(The other three raise their hands.)

Tom:  So if that's the case, how can we make what unseen visible here?

Ali:  What if we could find a witness?  Someone to corroborate our theory.

Tom:  That would be. . .big.

Scene:  Bryan's Car

(Bryan pulls to a stop outside of a store.  He and Ali are together.)

Bryan:  Sure you don't want me go with you?

Ali:  No, I think I can do this better one on one.

(Ali gets out of the car and runs across the street.)

Scene:  Inside Store

(Riley is working at the counter.)

Riley:  Ali?

Ali:  We gotta talk.

Riley:  Yeah, what is it?

Ali:  I know you didn't sleep with Nick.  You just said that to protect Julian.  But it's not gonna work.  You can't protect him and you shouldn't.

Riley:  You're talking crazy.

Ali:  Listen to my, Riley.  I know you're involved.  You have a chance to save yourself-

Riley:  I'm not involved in anything!

Ali:  -and do the right thing.

Scene:  Outside

(A car pulls up outside the store and Julian gets out.  Bryan isn't paying attention.  He's listening to music with his eyes closed.  Julian heads towards the store and sees Ali and Riley talking.  He runs.)

Scene:  Inside Store

Ali:  I wanted to protect Nick just as badly, but you've gotta see Julian for who he is.  He's a murderer, Riley.

(We see things from Julian's point of view, hiding behind something.)

Ali:  Look, if you saw something at the party it'll make all the difference.  Given everything we know and your testimony, Julian goes down.

Riley:  Okay.  Alright, it was Julian.  We fell in love.  It just, it just happened and then all of a sudden he wanted to go to college with me.

Ali:  And Damon didn't have a clue?

Riley:  Not until after the SATs.

Ali:  What happened then?

Riley:  Damon found out what happened with the SATs.  He confronted Julian about it the night of the party.

Scene:  Party

(Flashback.   Riley is slicing limes in the kitchen with the knife while Damon and Julian are fighting each other in the hallway.)

Damon:  I'm gonna smoke the whole damn thing!  I'm gonna tell the SAT people that you paid Ethan to tank my test!

Julian:  Calm down.  Sit down, have a margarita.  Relax.  Think this through.  If I go down, you down too.  You don't want that, do ya?  Look, you can always retake your SATs, apply to any college you want next year.  You really wanna ruin your life over this?

Damon:  No, I'm gonna ruin yours!  (To Riley.)  And you're going down too!

Scene:  Store

(End flashback.)

Riley:  Julian freaked.  He went after Damon and I couldn't stop him.

Ali:  What were you doing?

Riley:  I was making the margaritas.

Scene:  Party

(Flashback, replaying the scene in the kitchen.  The camera focuses on Riley cutting the lines now.)

Julian:  If I go down, you down.  You don't want that, do ya?  Look, you can always retake your SATs, apply to any college you want next year.  You really wanna ruin your life over this?

Damon:  No, I'm gonna ruin yours!  (To Riley.)  And you're going down too!

(Damon leaves Riley and Julian there.)

Riley:  He's gonna to ruin everything.

(She sets the knife down.)

Scene:  Store

(End flashback.)

Ali:  You've gotta go to the police with me, Riley.

Riley:  Okay.

Julian:  No!  I'm not going down for this.  You're the one who stabbed him!

(Ali is between Riley and Julian, holding her arms out to keep them away from each other.)

Ali:  She had the knife, didn't she Julian?

Riley:  Shut up!

Ali:  From cutting the limes.

Riley:  Grab her!

(Riley lunges at Ali and Julian grabs her from behind.  Riley grabs a metal bar from a shelf.  They get into a fight.  Ali sends Riley into a pile of bikes.  Outside, Bryan realizes there's a fight inside.)

Riley:  You bitch!  Julian, get her!

(Bryan gets out of his car and runs to the store.  Inside, Riley is on the ground, Ali is against the counter and Julian is standing up with something in his hand.)

Ali:  Don't do it, Julian.

Julian:  You're dead.

(Bryan runs up and knocks Julian off his feet just as he's about to swing the hammer.  Riley jumps on Ali's back while Bryan and Julian fight.  Bryan kicks Julian into more bikes and Ali flips Riley over her shoulder.)

Ali:  Thank you.

Bryan:  Didn't look like you needed my help.

Scene:  Street

(Vargas is arresting Julian and Riley.)

Vargas:  Alright, duck your head.

(Tom, Ali, Bryan and Tory watch as Julian and Riley are loaded into the back of a police car.)

Ali:  I saw it.  I finally saw what I wasn't seeing.  How it must have happened.

Tom:  I'm proud of you guys,

Ali:  Thanks.

Tom:  Come on, let's get out of here.

Scene:  Tom's Office

(Tom is punching numbers at his deck when Claire walks in.  Tom looks up.)

Claire:  Thanks for helping me yesterday.

Tom:  Sure.  Come on in.

Claire:  I always feel all this pressure from mom, and from Phillip, to be perfect.  I'm not perfect.

Tom:  Well, nobody's perfect.

Claire:  You see me differently.  I like that.

Tom:  I'm glad.  Did you want something?

Claire:  Dad, you know the judge sort of left this custody thing up to me?

Tom:  Yeah.

Claire:  Yeah, I was just wondering, if it's okay, if I stopped by more often?

Tom:  Of course.  I'd love that.

Claire:  Good.  Okay, well, I have to go skating.

Tom:  Okay.

Claire:  Bye Dad.

Tom:  Bye.

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Waterfront.  Tory is leaning against the railing and Trip comes up to her.)

Trip:  You were right.  I misjudged Nick.

Tory:  It's okay.

Trip:  No, it's not.  Sometimes I'm distrustful of people.  You know, it clouds my judgement.  I'm sorry.

Tory:  Don't do that.  Don't apologize.  I've been horrible to you and I hate myself for it.

Trip:  What do you mean?

Tory:  The way I was acting.  I was being totally stubborn.  I was shutting you out.

Trip:  You were caught up in something.  It's okay, I understand.

Tory:  This is exactly why I didn't wanna date someone from class.  This whole thing of being a couple, it's too complicated.

Trip:  So let me get this straight:  You can fight for Nick but you can't fight for us?

Tory:  I guess I can't.

(She goes back to looking at the water and Trip slowly walks away.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(The class is working with blindfolds again.)

Tom:  Feel what you can't see.  'Cuz sometimes what you see is not what is most important.

(Bryan falls into Ali and she laughs and catches him.  She says something to him, most likely blaming/teasing him for their messing up, judging by his reaction.)

Bryan:  You lost it, not me.

(Tom turns and sees Nick enter the room.  He arm is in a sling and he's limping.  Tom walks over to him.)

Tom:  That's good.  Alright, blindfolds off.

(They remove their blindfolds and are surprised and happy to see Nick standing by Tom.)

Tory:  Nick!

Bryan:  Nick?  Welcome back, man.

(Nick nods, looks like he's about to say something, but decides not to.)

Ali:  Hey.

(Again, Nick can't decide if he's gonna say something or not.)

Tom:  It's good to have you back, Nick.

Nick:  Thanks.

(The class is still staring at Nick, who's decided they shouldn't do that anymore.)

Nick:  Alright, alright.  Ignore me.  Keep going.  I'm gonna watch everyone else suffer for a change.

Tom:  Alright, strength conditioning.

(The class partners up and continues with Tom walking among them.)
