Scene:  Martial Arts School

(The room is large and spacious with the sun coming through the windows.  The room has a very oriental look to it.  Tom Chang in speaking to his students, who are in a circle around him, paying attention.  He paces while speaking.  All scene cuts included in this scene are most likely a memory of Tom's.)

Tom:  Now Master Li believes that life is a constantly shifting path.  It can twist around and change back on itself in ways that we can not imagine.

(A shot of Tory listening)

Tom:  (Con't.)  Which is why we have to be ready to change direction at a moment's notice.

(Tom looks to his right and we're taken to a room.  There is a yin yang in the center of the floor.  Red flags with Chinese symbols hang on the walls and small fires burn.  From behind, we see a man standing in the room alone.  He turns and we see that it is Tom.  He makes a few hand motions and gets into a fighting stance.  He is suddenly joined by men dressed in black, carrying fighting staffs, getting ready to fight him.  He is surrounded and definitely outnumbered.  As quickly as the scene changed, it goes back to Tom speaking to his students.)

Tory:  Will we really be able to fight eight people at once?

Tom:  Theoretically.

(Switch back to the scene with Tom fighting the men.  He fights them and gets control of one of their staffs.  The scene goes back to the class.)

Tory:  (Slightly skeptical)  You studied for like, a million years.  How are we ever gonna learn all that?

Tom:  Just show up for class.

(A shot of Bryan smiling.  The scene changes back to Tom fighting the men.  He subdues the men then stands in the center of the floor making more hand motions, the kind that can be associated with Tai Chi.)

Tom:  (He is speaking to his class, but there is still a shot of him in the room where the fight took place.)  Master Li says that what applies to fighting, applied to living.

Bryan:  So, Master Li's like your Yoda?

(Tory gives Bryan a look.)

Tom:  (Smiles.)  Something like that.

(Cut back to the room with the fight.  A man, who we can assume is Master Li, steps out of a door carrying a black sash across his arms.  He approaches Tom, who is now standing in the middle of the room with the men he was fighting.  When Master Li approaches, Tom bows.  Master Li bows as well, then presents Tom with the black sash.)

Bryan:  Hey, how long does it take to get a black sash?

(As he's speaking, the scene returns to present with Tom speaking to his class.)

Tom:  As long as it takes you to go down to the fabric store with your wallet and your belt size.  (The class finds this amusing.)  You mean how long does it take to earn one, right?

Bryan:  (Nods.)  Right.

Tom:  That's up to you.

Kid From Class:  Is it true you used to be a cop?

(Tory and Bryan give each other a look, both knowing that that was not the best question to ask.)

Scene:  Marina Park High- Hallway

Music:

(A school bell rings.  Bryan walks by and he's got a pager in his hands.  The phone in his bag is ringing.)

Bryan:  Hang on, hang on.  (The phone stops.)  Damn.

(Ali catches up to him, holding a piece of paper.)

Ali:  Hey, Bri.  (Hands him the paper.)

Bryan:  Hey.  What's this?

Ali:  Notes, from trig class.

Bryan:  (Happy.) Oh.

Ali:  I noticed you left early.

Bryan:  You're a life saver.  (Puts his arm around her shoulders.)  Thank you.  (Moves his hand.)  Alright.  Is there anything else?

Ali:  Nothing.  (He starts to walk away.)  Well, I was thinking, maybe we could study together sometime.

Bryan:  Oh, I don't know Ali.

Ali:  (Disappointed.)  Okay.  It's no biggie.

Bryan:  No, you. . .you're cool, it's just I got a lot going on, that's all.

Bryan's Friend:  Yo!  What's up, B?

Bryan:  Yo, what's up?  You good?

Bryan's Friend:  Yeah yeah yeah, we still hanging out tomorrow?

Bryan:  (They are getting farther apart down the hall from each other.)  Yeah, tomorrow.  You got my cell?  We'll hook up.  What about my e-mail address?

Bryan's Friend:  No man.

Bryan:  Alright, forget it!  Page me tomorrow!  I know you got that!

(Bryan goes to his locker and Ali comes up behind him.)

Ali:  Do you ever get the impression that all this advanced technology keeps people apart about a billion times more than it brings them together?

Bryan:  What?

(Bell rings again.  The camera cuts to someone's butt walking down the hall.  A few seconds later we see that it's Tory with a determined look on her face.  Two guys are following her.)

Guy 1:  Hey.

Guy 2:  Hey uh, nice pants.  (Tries to grab her butt.  She grabs his hand and forces it behind his back,  she slams him into a wall and holds him against a railing.)  Ow!

(The people watching laugh.)

Tory:  Does anyone know who's hand this is?  'Cuz I found it on my butt.

Guy 2:  That hurts.

(Tory stick out her bottom lip in a fake pout, clear showing no sympathy.)

Ali:  Wow.

Bryan:  Now she's wacked.

Tory:  Come on, no takers?  (Shoves the guy.)  Run along you little tadpole.

Girl in crowd:  Tory, come one.

(Tory walks past Ali to her locker, which happens to be next to Bryan's.  She takes off her coat while Bryan stares at her?)

Tory:  What are you smirking at?

Bryan:  Come on, you can't blame the guy for trying.  (Pause.)  Look, man ain't the enemy, you know?

Tory:  No, boys are.  (Slams her locker.)

(Stock shots of the San Francisco skyline.)

Scene:  Street

(A man on his cell phone is getting into his car.)

Man:  It's going down man, the warehouse, fourteenth and Market.

(Cut to Tom on his cell phone.)

Tom:  Is Chen there?

(Cut back to the Man in the car.)

Man:  Yeah yeah he's here, but the DEA just weighted the place.  If you want him you better move fast.

(Cut back to Tom.  He starts to leave.)

(Cut to Tom running down some stairs.)

(The screen splits.  The right half shows picturesque images of San Francisco and eventually ends on two boys from Tom's class, one is washing his face in a sink (he is also the same guy who asked about Tom being a cop).  The left hand side shows Tom getting into his car and driving.)

(While the conversation between the two boys is happening, we still see Tom driving.)

Face wash boy:  I googled him.  He was a cop for years and one day he just disappeared.

Other Boy:  I heard he worked for the mob in Hong Kong.

Face wash boy:  How cool would it be if he was an assassin?

(The screen goes back to one image and quickly cuts.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School

Female student:  (Hitting a punching bag.)  I hear he's got a wife and daughter in the city he doesn't even speak to.

Tory:  Well, maybe there's a good reason.

Female Student:  To desert your family?  Yeah, I'd like to hear that one.

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Locker Room

(The two boys from earlier are at locker while Bryan's on a bench.)

Bryan:  Look, you guys wanna keep spinning stories or you wanna know the truth?

Face Wash boy:  You know it?

(Split screen.  One of a close up of Bryan, one of the two guys.)

Bryan:  Yeah.  I was his first student when he took this place over from Master Li.

Face wash boy:  Alright, so what's the four one one?

Bryan:  Alright, look.  Tom was San Francisco PD.  A narcotics cop.  He went to work undercover in Hong Kong trying to nail the triad's bringing drugs into the city.  Only they nailed him first.

(Goes back to normal screen.)

Bryan:  Yeah, his partner was in on it with 'em.  They set him up with ten kilos of heroin.

(Cut to shots of a prison with prisoners in chains.)

Bryan:  (Voice over.)  He did five years hard time.  Hong Kong hard time.

Face Wash boy:  Damn.

Bryan:  Yep.  (Shot of Tom walking into a cell.)  Dude lost everything.  (Back to locker room.)  His family, his friends. . .his reputation.

Scene:  Warehouse

(Split screen.  Both sides show Tom getting to the warehouse.  He gets out of his car.  The place is crawling with cops.  The woman in charge, Lisa, comes out of a building.)

Lisa:  Any sign of Chen?  Keep looking, nobody goes home.  Come on, let's move!

(Split screens for a second.  One of her and one of Tom, then goes solely to Tom.  Tom is angry that Chen's not there.  He looks up at the side of a building.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Locker Room

Face Wash boy:  So what's he doing back here?

Bryan:  Trying to put the past behind him.  He's starting over.

Scene:  Warehouse

(Pan to the top of a building.  Tom is standing there.  He looks down at the street below him.  He sees a woman walking to a bus stop.  He starts walking in the same direction on the roof.  The woman gets on the bus and Tom starts running over the tops of the buildings to keep up with it.  Tom comes to the edge of the buildings just as the bus stops at a red light.  He jumps and lands on the bus with a grunt.  The people on the bus all look up to see what it was.  Everyone except the woman that Tom was following.  She turns her head slightly.  Tom loses his balance and falls off the back so he's dangling in the back window.  He hurries to pull himself back to the roof.  The woman turns around.  We see that it's not actually a woman, but a man dressed in drag.  He pulls a gun and the people on the bus scream.  The man starts shooting the roof while he's walking down the aisle.  Cut to a shot of Tom moving along the roof dodging the bullets.  The gun runs out of bullets.  Tom crashes in through a window.  He swings and kicks the man on the chest, knocking him to the floor.  He quickly stands and Tom and the man, who we can assume is Chen, fight.  Tom kicks Chen and he flies out of the bus's doors and crashes into a table that's there.  Two nuns are watching.  Tom punches Chen and detains him.)

Scene:  Warehouse

(Cut back to where the cops are located.)

Lisa:  Hey, where is he?

Tom:  (Shows up with Chen.)  He's here.  Former inspector Chen <last name indistinguishable> of the Hong Kong narcotics squad.

(Tom shoves Chen towards the cops and starts to walk away.  Lisa squares herself behind him with her hands on her hips.)

Lisa:  Tom Chang!  (Stops and turns.)  You're a civilian now.  Leave the police work to the police.  (She goes back to her job.)

Tom:  Nice to see you too, Lisa.

[Opening Credits- "Breathe" By Greenwheel.]

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(The class is in a circle with the exception of Tory and Bryan.  They are facing off.  Tory growls/grunts and charges at Bryan.  They fight.  Tory eventually pins Bryan and Tom interrupts him before she takes the fighting too far.)

Tom:  Okay, this is not Mortal Combat.  What are we studying here?

Bryan:  (Like it's obvious.)  The art of eight palm changes.

Tom:  And what are we studying the art for?

Tory:  To bash Bryan's head in.  (The class laughs.)

Tom:  (Is tapping something in his hands with his fingers.  He's annoyed.)  Excuse me?

Tory:  For self defense.

Bryan:  Yeah, that's why it's called martial art and not martial smack down.

Tory:  You know what?  Shut up.

Tom:  Alright, have a seat.  (They sit.)  Bryan moved in a straight line. . .and Tory moved in a straight line.  And we saw the result (smacks both of his hands together), right?

(Trip walks into the school.  Cut back to Tom teaching.  He is walking in front of his class.)

Tom:  Now, Master Li says that to learn our art, you have to move the way life moves.  What does that mean?  Life does not move in straight lines.  It stretches, it bends, it moves in ways that we just don't expect it to.  So we have to learn to be flexible.  In here.  And perhaps in your own life.  Flexible.

(Tom puts the box that he has been holding on the ground.)

Tom:  Kay, everybody up in a circle.

 (The class obeys.)

Tom:  First palm change.  Bryan supervise.

(Tom goes over to talk to Trip, who has been watching the entire time.)

Bryan:  Everybody, let's do the first palm change.

Tom:  You a fan?  (Sees Trip's shirt with a picture of Bruce Lee on it.)

Trip:  Yeah.

Tom:  Yeah, Bruce Lee was the real deal, wasn't he?

Trip:  I got all his tapes.  Look, uh, those the prices on the rate card?

Tom:  Yeah.

(Trip  seems disappointed.  He rubs his fingers across his face and we finally get a good look at him.  He look like he's been beaten up recently.)

Trip:  Yeah well uh, thanks for the look but I think I'm gonna have to stick to blockbuster for awhile.

(Trip leaves.  Tom thinks for a second.)

Scene: Martial Arts School- Outside Front Sidewalk

(Tom runs out of the building to catch Trip.  He's got a piece of paper in his hand.)

Tom:  Hey!  No charge to fill out an application.

Trip:  I've got some cash flow issues.

Tom:  Well how are you with a paintbrush?

Trip:  I'm no Rembrandt.

Tom:  I can't afford Rembrandt.  Let's work out a little trade, okay?  Outside needs a paint job and the window needs a sign.  What's your name?

Trip:  Trip Brady.

Tom:  Okay, one thing.  The guys that come in here and think they're gonna be Kato or something, they don't last long.

Trip:  It's ain't about that.

(Trip takes the application and walks away.  Tom walks back to his school and is stopped by a lawyer named Monte.)

Monte:  Mr. Chang!

(Monte hands Tom a piece of paper.)

Tom:  (Reading.)  Monte Waller and Son.

Monte: (Friendly.)  I'm Monte, there is no son.  It just sounds more professional.

Tom:  I don't need a bail bondsman.

Monte:  Oh, keep it.  You never know, right?  Your friend Chen?  I held the bail on him.  He skipped and left me holding eighty large until you snagged him.

Tom:  (Pats him on the shoulder.)  Glad it worked out for ya.

(Tom walks away but Monte follows.)

Monte:  Oh, for both of us.  Here.

(Monte hands him a envelope.)

Tom:  (Sees money in the envelope.)  Hey, I didn't do it for the money.

Monte:  Oh I know.  This was payback, right?

Tom:  Whatever.

Monte: Come on, listen, you did me a big favor today.  This is free money.

Tom:  No such thing.

Monte:  Hey, bail is a constitutional right, my friend.  You could do very nicely with me.

Tom:  I get by just fine without you.

Monte:  Now see, I didn't realize that Kung Fu paid that well.

Tom:  It doesn't.  (Goes into his school and closes the door.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School

Music:

(Tory is practicing palm changes when Tom comes up to her.)

Tom:  I want you to be a little more careful in class.

Tory:  What do you mean?

Tom:  Well you came very close to hurting Bryan and that's not what I'm teaching.

Tory:  I slipped.

Tom:  No, you didn't slip.  Come on, you know it and I know it.  I can help you with your martial arts and if you'd let me, I'd like to even help you with your anger.

Tory:  I don't know what you're talking about.

Tom:  Look.  About your father.

Tory:  Yeah okay.  It's been a tough year.  I'm a tragic police orphan.  But I'll manage.

Tom:  Not until you acknowledge what you're feeling.

Tory:  Alright.  I'm a little angry.  The man who killed my father is running free.  The police know who he is and they can't find him.  Now how am I supposed to feel?  Happy?

Tom:  No, but if you come in her every day full of anger and rage I cannot teach you, do you understand?

Tory:  I understand.

Scene:  Ice Rink

Music:  "She Will Be Loved" By Maroon 5.

(Down below we see about a dozen skaters on the ice.  We realize that Tom is watching them.  Or, more accurately, one of the girls.  She skates backwards and does a jump.  Tom smiles.  He gets up to leave.  Just as he's leaving his seat he runs into a woman.)

Tom:  (Takes a deep breath.)  Hello, Beth.

Beth:  (Takes a few steps closer to him.)  When did you get out?

Tom:  A few months ago.  Just uh, wanted to get settled in before uh. . . Look at her.  (About their daughter.)

Beth:  Thanks.

Tom:  Claire looks great.  She's so big.  It's hard to believe.

Beth:  (Worried)  She hasn't seen you, has she?

Tom:  No.  I wanted to, you know, talk to you first.  Uh, my letters. . . she never wrote

back. . . you never wrote back.  What's you tell her about me?

Beth:  That you were gone.

Tom:  When can I see her?

(Beth pushes past Tom.)

Beth:  I don't think that's a good idea.

Tom:  She's my daughter too.

Beth:  Yeah, you should have thought about that before you did what you did.

Tom:  I was set up.  You know that.

Beth:  Look, I'm talking about dragging us to Hong Kong in the first place.

(We see another man walking up the steps towards them.)

Phillip:  Beth.

(Phillip sees Tom.)

Phillip:  You're out.

Tom:  You must be Phillip.

Phillip:  That's right.  Phillip Rodgers, her husband.  (To Beth)  You okay?

Beth:  Mmm hmm.

Phillip:  So what is it you wanted?

Tom:  We were discussing our daughter.  And when I can see her.

Phillip:  (To Beth)  Why don't you go on down ahead, alright?  I'll join you in a minute.

Beth:  (Thinks about it for a second.)  Alright.  (Walks away.)

Phillip:  We have a happy and well adjusted child who has two parents.  She doesn't need this confusion in her life.

Tom:  In her life or yours?

Phillip:  I'm sure it's been tough for ya.  But you screw with me and it's gonna get that much tougher.

Tom:  Thank you very much for the advice, Phillip.

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Outside

(Tom stops and unlocks the door.  He bends to pick something up and Ali comes up behind him.)

Ali:  Hi.  I'm Ali Bennett and I'm to like join, or try out, or whatever.

Tom:  Okay.  How 'bout you observe a class first?

Ali:  No!  I mean, I'm sold.  I wanna do it, I'm ready.  If that's okay, I mean.

(Bryan walks between them on his way into class.)

Bryan:  Hey, Thomas C.

Ali:  Hey Bryan.

Bryan:  (A little hurried).  Hey.

Tom:  You know each other?

Ali:  We go to the same school.  I help him with his homework.

Tom:  You his tutor?

Ali:  (Laughs).  No.  Tutor?  God no.  (Seems embarrassed.)

Tom:  He copies off you.  (They share a look.)  Go on in and stretch.

(She smiles and does.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Main Practice Room

(The students are standing attentively.  Tom is walking in front of them.)

Tom:  We have two new students tonight.  Uh, Trip Brady and Ali Bennett.

(The class claps.  We see Trip and Ali in the crowd.)

Tom:  Okay, let's pair off.  Two man form.  Senior students match up with the beginners.  Okay, lets go.

(Bryan bends down to tie his shoe.)

Tom:  Bryan, go take Ali and show her the first palm change.

Bryan:  (Protesting)  Look, me and Ali. . .we're like

Tom:  I'm not asking you to marry her.

(Bryan walks over to Ali.  Tom observes his class.  A boy is thrown to the ground and grunts.  Tom looks to see who his partner is.  It's Tory.  She sees him looking/glaring and holds up her hands.)

Tory:  My fault.  I slipped.

Tom:  We don't slip.  (To the boy.)  You okay?

Boy:  Yeah.

(A man, early twenties, enters the school.)

Man:  Tom Chang?

Tom:  (Looks up.)  Yes?

Man:  (Holds up an envelope.)  I'm serving you with a restraining order.  Stay a hundred yards away from your daughter.  You have been served.

(The messenger Leaves.)

(Tom looks up and sees Tory, Ali, and Brian watching.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Dock Or Waterfront Of Some Sort

(It's dusk.  Tom and Master Li are there with fishing gear.  Master Li has the restraining order in his hands.)

Master Li:  "Ordered to stay one hundred yards from the domicile, school, or person of Claire Rodgers."  Rodgers?!

Tom:  They changed her name.  I thought maybe I could just talk to her.

Master Li:  One hundred yards!  You will have to talk very loud.

Tom:  No, I meant her mother.

Master Li:  Looks like her mother's already spoken.  Loud and clear.

Tom:  Well, the lawyer says I have a good case.

Master Li:  Ah, the lawyer who wants five thousand dollars as a retainer?

Tom:  Yep.

Master Li:  Which you can get.

Tom:  Yeah.

Master Li:  By bounty hunting.

Tom:  Yeah.

Master Li:  Which you find distasteful.

Tom:  Very.

Master Li:  Even though it's like the job you did before.

Tom:  The job before I had a badge.

Master Li:  (Chuckles).  Young Tom, I'm flattered you still come to me for advice after twenty years, but really. . . if you want to see your daughter then this is a no brainer.

Scene:  Office

(Monte is behind his desk on the phone.)

Monte:  Yes, I understand your predicament Madam, but I didn't tell your husband to hold up a Waffle House, now did I?  (Pause)  Well my fee is my fee and no, I do not accept ten year old mink stoles as collateral.  Thank you, buh bye.

(Monte puts the phone's ear piece on the desk and we see that Tom is in the room.)

Monte:  Mr. Chang, what a pleasant surprise.

Tom:  Let's skip the pleasantries.  I need to earn some money.

Monte:  Oh, don't we all.  Except for the independently wealthy. . . and the Buddhist

Monks of course.  What kind of money are we talking about?

Tom:  Five thousand dollars.

Monte:  Ah, let's see what we have in inventory in that price range.

(They look to a computer screen, which is now scanning through faces.)

Monte:  Bank robber?  Drug dealer?

(As Monte suggests these, he stops at their photos.)

Tom:  How about the guy who killed Sargent Jack Stratton?

Monte:  Let me see.

(The computer gets a hit.)

Monte:  You're in luck!  Billy Wu.  Killed Sargent Jack Stratton last April.  Why, did you know him?

Tom:  No.  But his daughter's one of my students.

Monte:  So do you want him or not?

Scene:  Amusement Park

Music:

(Various shots of the crowd.  We see money and drugs change hands.  The dealer, Curtis, catches sight of Tom in the crowd and bolts.  Tom chases him to a more secluded area of the park. The dealer goes around one side of a small building, but tom is waiting for him to turn a corner and takes him down with a kick.)

Tom:  Hey!

(Curtis grunts and falls on his back.)

Tom:  Morning Curtis!

(Tom drags Curtis up and slams him against the building.)

Curtis:  Ow!

(Tom is holding Curtis with his arm at Curtis' throat.)

Tom:  One question:  Where's Billy Wu?

Curtis:  You're not gonna be able to get anywhere near him, alright?  Billy Wu's protected.  Lee Pow has his back.

Tom:  How's that?

Curtis:  Billy runs errands for him most nights at the Seventh Dynasty club.  At least he did.

(Tom lets him go and Curtis groans.)

Tom:  Helpful as always, Curtis

(Tom walks away.)

Curtis:  You're wasting your time, man!  Ain't no way you're getting into that club!  Not by yourself!

Scene:  Outside Martial Arts School

Music:

(Ali rides her bike down the street.  Tom is cleaning his windows.)

Ali:  Hey, Mr. C.

Tom:  You're early.

Ali:  I wanted to get some extra practice in.

(Ali leans her bike against the building and starts doing the palm changes.)

Tom:  Looks good.

Ali:  Thanks, I had Sven practice with me before school.

Tom:  Sven?

Ali:  My mom's trainer.  I was thinking I'd like to surprise Bryan.

Tom:  Bryan, huh?  You consider Bryan a friend?

Ali:  Well. . . um. . .define friend.

Tom:  You like him.  He hardly knows you exist.

Ali:  That would be an accurate definition.

Tom:  Look, in our form we have a saying:  Win by patience, not by pursuing.

Ali:  (Confused)  Okay?

Tom:  Just play hard to get.

Ali:  Oh.  Thanks.

(Tom looks through the window and sees Tory working with a punching bag.)

Scene:  Inside the Martial Arts School

Music:

(Tory is practicing and her movements look fairly choppy.  Tom is watching.)

Tom:  Don't be so forceful.  Clear your mind.  Relax.  Do it with me.

(They both are working, moving in a circle.)

Tom:  Drawing energy into the circle, feel the circle.

(They continue.)

Tom:  Better.  Feel better?

Tory:  Yeah.

Tom:  Looks better.

Scene:  Waterfront Side Of Martial Arts School

(It's night now.  Tory is sitting outside facing the water.  Tom comes up behind her and shows her a picture of Billy Wu.)

Tom:  You know who this is.

Tory:  Yeah.

Tom:  I want you to know I'm gonna find him.

(Tom starts to walk away and Tory jumps up to stop him.)

Tory:  Wait!  I. . .I wanna help you.

Tom:  It's too dangerous.

Tory:  I'm not afraid.

Tom:  You can not get involved.

Tory:  (Angry)  Then why did you even tell me?!

Tom:  I thought that would help you.

Tory:  (Snidely)  Great.  (Walks away.)

(Tom sighs and watches her walk away.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School- Parking Lot

(Tory strides to her motorcycle and pauses.  She's clearly upset.  She runs her hand over the seat and starts to cry.  From behind Ali sees this and comes closer.)

Ali:  Are you okay?

Tory:  (Still crying.)  Yeah, I'm alright.

Ali:  You know, you're part of the reason I'm here.

Tory:  Meaning?

Ali:  In the hallway the other day when that guy tried to grab you, you were awesome.

Tory:  Yeah, I went a little psycho.

Ali:  I loved it.  Made me wanna be like you.

Tory:  You don't wanna be like me.  Trust me.

(Tory gets on her bike.)

Ali:  That's a really cool bike.  Where'd ya get it?

Tory:  My dad bought it for me.  About a year ago.

Ali:  You guys much be close.

Tory:  Look, I gotta get outa here, okay?

Ali:  Sure.  Just. . . take care, okay?

Tory:  Yeah.  (Ali starts to walk away.  Long pause.)  Ali.

Ali:  Yeah?

Tory:  It's nice to have some more girls around here.

Ali:  Thanks.

(Tory rides off.)

Scene:  Outside Trip's House

Music:

(Tom walks up the steps and knocks.  Trip answers.)

Tom:  Hey, Kado .

Trip:  You make a house call every time someone doesn't show?

Tom:  Well You didn't put you phone number on the application and you still owe me a paint job.

(Tom sees the bruise on Trip's cheek.)

Tom:  What happened this time?

Trip:  You never got in a fight where you were a kid?

Tom:  Yeah.  But not every day.  What's going on, Trip?

(Trip sees his dad pull up.  Tom sees him look.)

Trip:  (Insistent.)  You gotta go.  Dad, this is uh, Mr. Chang.  He's my teacher.

Mr. Brady:  Teacher?  What'd he do?

Tom:  Nothin'.  Just checking up.

Mr. Brady:  (Put his arm around Trip.)  Just checking up.

Tom:  (Confirming.)  Just checking up.

(Mr. Brady seems satisfied for a second but changes his mind.)

Mr. Brady:  Oh uh, and what do you. . .what do you teach?

Tom:  Martial arts.

Mr. Brady:  Martial arts. . . I didn't know they teach that in school.

(Trip looks like he's busted.)

Tom:  They don't.  I have my own place.

Mr. Brady:  Is that so?  (Angrily to Trip.)  You didn't tell me that.

Trip:  I only went once.

Mr. Brady:  (To Tom.)  Oh well, thanks for 'checking up'.

Tom:  Nice to meet you.

(Mr. Brady and Trip go inside, closing the door on Tom.)

Scene:  Brady Living Room.

(Mr. Brady shoved Trip onto the couch and takes off his jacket.  He has a sadistic smile on his face.)

Mr. Brady:  Tell me why.  Hmm?

(Mr. Brady throws his Jacket on Trip.)

Mr. Brady:  Why?

(Mr. Brady hits him with a pillow.  Trip stands up.)

Trip:  Why what?!

Mr. Brady:  Why do you wanna take Karate?

Trip:  They don't even call it that.

Mr. Brady:  (Taunting.)  I know.  You wanna take Karate so you can jump on your old man, right?

Trip:  No.

Mr. Brady:  Yeah.

Trip:  No.

Mr. Brady:  You know what I say about liars in this house?

Trip:  I just wanna be able to defend myself.

(Mr. Brady grabs the back of Trips jacket and pushes him.)

Trip:  Dad, please.

Mr. Brady:  Come on.

(Trip breaks away and faces his dad in a fighting stance.)

Trip:  Just don't!

Mr. Brady:  Come on.  Defend yourself.  Come on.

(Trip turns away.  His dad is backing up as he taunts him.)

Mr. Brady:  Don't want to?  Defend yourself.  You already had a lesson.  Couple of kung fu movies.  Don't you wanna take me on?  Come on come on.  Punk.

(Trip charges and his dad hits him in the stomach.  Trip falls down.)

Mr. Brady:  Oh get up.  Come on, you're not hurt.  (Trip tried to get to his feet.)  Come on.

(Mr. Brady kicks Trip in the stomach, knocking him down again.)

Mr. Brady:  Get up!  Come on!

(Tom comes in and sees what's going on.)

Tom:  That's enough!

(Tom pulls Mr. Brady off of Trip and throws Mr. Brady against a wall. Mr. Brady grabs a trophy off of the mantle.)

Mr. Brady:  (Angry.)  My house.  You come into my house and tell me how to raise my kid?

(Mr. Brady charges Tom with the trophy a few times and Tom gets the upper hand each time and throws Mr. Brady to the floor.)

(Trip is watching all of this.  He see that his dad is out cold on the floor.  He looks at Tom, scared.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Tom's Home

Music:

(Tom pours a cup of tea and hands it to Trip.  They seem to be in an office.)

Trip:  They're gonna let him out, you know.

Tom:  You give a strong enough statement when the police interview you, they wont.

Trip:  My mother gave a strong statement.  She went to court, did the whole thing.  Three weeks later they let him out.  So one night he gets a little pissed off, he's drunk and he uh, he breaks her nose.  And then uh, the next day when I come back from school, she's gone.

Tom:  Well if he gets out you can stay here, okay?  But make sure when they interview you today, tell them about the drinking.  And the multiple offences.  Make sure they look at his whole record.

Trip:  Right.

Scene:  Dock

(Master Li is at the end of a dock practicing.  Tom approaches.)

Tom:  Sorry to disturb you Si Fu.

Master Li:  Must be very important.

Tom:  I need to see Lee Pow.

Master Li:  What for?

Tom:  Well, your no brainer.

Scene:  Kitchen

(Tom and Master Lee walk through a busy restaurant-type kitchen.)

Master Li:  Now remember Young Tom, diplomacy is always the best path to achieving your goal.

(They reach a door in the back and a security guard blocks it.)

Guard:  No one's here.

Master Li:  If no one's here, why are you guarding the door?

Guard:  Two choices:  Walk away or get thrown out.

Master Li:  Correction:  Three choices.

(Master Li pushes the guard through the door.  He careens backwards into a table, breaking it.)

Tom:  You call that diplomacy?

Master Li:  No, I call that a punch to the chest.

(There are quite a few angry men in the room.  Master Li walks towards the back where a man, Lee Pow, is behind a table.  The next part of the conversation is in Chinese with English subtitles.)

Lee Pow:  This must be your student.

Master Lei:  Yes.  (Sits across from the man.)

Lee Pow:  Does he have a name?

Tom:  Tom Chang.

Man:  He's the one looking for Billy Wu.

Master Li:  You know everything.

Lee Pow:  (In English.)  You don't grow old without growing smart.

Tom: (English)  Then you know that Billy Wu killed a cop.

Lee Pow:  He has bribed himself passage on a ship sailing tonight.

Tom:  You wouldn't happen to know which one, would you?

Lee Pow:  I run a Mah Jong club, not a travel agency.

Scene:  Martial Arts School

Music:

(Trip us painting when Tory walks in.)

Tory:  Hey, do you know where Tom is?

Trip:  He's in his office, why?

Tory:  I think I owe him an apology.

(Tory walks down a hallway and stops outside of Tom's office when she hears him speaking.)

Tom:  Billy Wu.  (Pause.)  Yeah.

(Tom steps into view, not seeing Tory.  He's on the phone.)

Tom:  Just. . . just give me the pier number.  Pier six.  Thanks, got it.

(Tom puts his phone away and grabs his coat on the way out of the office.  When he walks out, Tory is gone.  A second later, once Tom's gone, she steps out from behind a corner.)

[Commercial Break]

Scene:  Pier Six

(It's night.  The screen splits horizontally.  Top is just scenes of the pier.  Bottom is a man, Billy Wu, lighting a cigarette.  Bottom half takes over the screen.)

Billy's Friend:  Stop worrying.  He'll be here.  Finish your hand.

Billy:  I'll stop worrying when I'm in international waters.

Friend 2:  Sit down Billy, let's play.

(Split screens of various angles of the Billy and two other guys.  Then of the guard being knocked unconscious by Tory.  Then of a person's feet walking to a motorcycle.  Split screen of Tory creeping along a low wall and Billy and Co. from her point of view.  Her cell phone rings, blowing her cover.  She quick turns it off but it's too late.  The guys heard it.  She runs but is quickly surrounded.)

Scene:  Road

(A motorcycle drive down the road.  The same bike that we saw the person walk to.  The bike roars into the group.  We see it's Tom driving and he slides the bike into the group of men.  The fight.  Tory gets smart and hides out of the way.  Somehow she comes face to face with Billy.  They start to fight as well.  Back to Tom fighting for 30 more seconds.  Cut's back to Tory and Billy.  She knocks him on his back.  The fights lasts for about a minute and a half.  And armed man comes up behind Tom, who doesn't see him.  Luckily for Tom, Tory does and she throws a giant barrel at him, knocking him over.  Tom give her a What-Am-I-Going-To-Do-With-You look and sighs.)

(Cut to later.  There's police there.  The men, Billy included, are being arrested.)

Tom:  Thanks a lot, inspector.  (He heads over to where Tory is sitting.  She sees Billy in the back of a patrol car.  Tom sits next to Tory.)

Tom:  You alright?

(Tory takes awhile to find the right words.)

Tory:  I thought it would feel better than this.

Tom:  Never does.   Now tell me:  What the hell were you doing here in the first place?

Tory:  I was covering your back.  You could say thank you.

Tom:  Right  But that would be condoning what you did.

Tory:  Would it help if I said sorry?

Tom:  Well only if you mean it.

(Tory turns away.  She obviously wouldn't have meant it.)  See, I didn't think so.  (Tory starts to laugh.)

Tom  What's so funny?

(Tom's laughing as well.)

Tory:  Nothing.

(Tory rests her head on Tom's shoulder and he hugs her.)

Scene:  Outside Somewhere

(We see feet walking and we hear Tom counting paces.)

Tom:  Ninety six, ninety seven, ninety eight, ninety nine, one hundred yards.

(Tom turns to face where he's walking from.  We hear a school bell ring.  We see girls running out of school, talking to their friends.  Claire is among them.  Tom watches her walk with a friend.)

Scene:  Martial Arts School

(Tom is beating the crap out of a punching bag.  He's obviously been at it for awhile.  Master Li comes in.)

Master Li:  Things didn’t go so well with the lawyer, I see.

Tom:  Beth and Phillip are gonna fight it.

(Tom hits the bag.)

Tom:  They want depositions-

(Tom hits the bag again.)

Tom:  -and psychological examinations and records of my conviction.  They got time, they got money, they got my kid.  They're just gonna drag it out.

Master Li:  Everything unfolds as it should, young Tom.  Patience is always rewarded.

Tom:  I just wish it would happen in this lifetime.  (

Tom kicks the punching bag and it falls.  Tom looks sheepish.)

Tom:  Sorry Si Fu, I'll fix that.

Scene: Martial Arts School- Outside

Music:

(Tom is painting the window when Trip walks up.)

Trip:  Well I gave 'em my statement.  They checked out his record,  I told 'em about the drinking.  They're not gonna let him out.

Tom:  Good.  Good job.  But I think we're gonna have to come up with some more painting.

(Trip looks at Tom.)

Tom:  To cover your share of the rent.  See that sign down there?

(Tom points and Trip looks and nods.)

Tom:  Grab a paintbrush.

(Looks inside and sees Tory practicing.)

Scene:  Inside Martial Arts School

Music:

(Tory is stretching and Brian and Ali are practicing.)

Bryan:  What, you mad at me or something?

Ali:  Mad at you?  No, why would I be?

Bryan:  I don't know.  I mean, you haven't followed me into the boys bathroom for a couple days.

Ali:  I had a lot of homework.

(The move closer so their forearms are touching, still moving in a circle.)

Bryan:  Yeah, speaking of homework, did you do the trig assignment?

Ali:  Yes.

Bryan:  Mind if I take a look at it?

Ali:  Yes.

(Bryan looks surprised.)

Bryan:  Why?  I taught you this.

(Meaning what they were doing.  They change positions and Bryan puts himself in the perfect position for Ali to flip him so she takes full advantage of it.)

Bryan:  Damn, what the hell was that?!

Ali:  Two things:  One, I'll learn on my own from now on and two, do your own homework.

(Everyone watching claps.)

Bryan:  Oh, it's like that?

(Cut to Tom watching from the window.)
