BIRDS OF PREY
1X11: REUNION
==========================
FULL INTRODUCTION (VOICE-OVER ONLY):
ALFRED PENNYWORTH: Legend tells of a caped crusader --Batman, guardian of New
Gotham, and his one true love -- Catwoman, the Queen of the Criminal Underworld.
Their passion left behind something extraordinary -- a daughter -- Huntress.
Half meta-human, she has taken up her father's mantle, and fights to protect the
innocent and helpless. Joining her in this struggle, Oracle, once Batman's
protégée Batgirl. She was caught in the crossfire of the war between Batman and
Joker. Now she fights crime a different way -- a master of the cyber-realms and
trainer to heroes. Together, they have taken in -- Dinah, a meta-human herself
with powers that she is only beginning to explore. These three are the
protectors of new Gotham -- The Birds of Prey. My name is Alfred Pennyworth,
and this is their story.

END OF INTRODUCTION
CUT TO:
[INT. THE DARK HORSE BAR - NIGHT]
(The place is active. A group of young men raise their mugs of beer and cheer.)
STUART THOMSEN: To New Gotham High's coolest graduating class.
JOEY NORVILLINO: Back in town, baby!
BEER DRINKER 1: Yeah!
(JOEY raises his mug to drink and a person behind him bumps into him.)
CAM HENDERSON: (mutters) Sorry.
JOEY NORVILLINO: What the hell?
CAM HENDERSON: Didn't mean to -
(JOEY puts his drink down and turns to look at who bumped into him. CAM
recognizes JOEY instantly. He brightens.)
CAM HENDERSON: Joey Norvillino. Oh, good. It's me -- Cam Henderson.
Remember? I used to tutor you in trig.
(CAM holds out his hand. JOEY looks and it and doesn't take it.)
JOEY NORVILLINO: Whatever, geek.
(Like teenagers, the men at the table laugh and snicker. JOEY turns away from
CAM, ignoring him.)
(CAM walks away.)
(Standing behind the bar, HELENA watches the guys at the table. She turns to
look at GIBSON.)
HELENA: See, that's exactly why I didn't want to go to the reunion. I don't
know why you're so eager.
(GIBSON puts his drink down on the counter.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Because I feel confident that after five long years, I'll finally
be lauded as the undisputed New Gotham high alumni success story.
HELENA: Gibson, you sell pez dispensers.
GIBSON KAFKA: Rare collectibles, at an obscene markup. How about you go as my
date, and then we'll rub their noses in my good fortune? I've always wanted to
walk in with a blond.
HELENA: I'm brunette.
GIBSON KAFKA: Which brings me to my next question.
(Knowing exactly where this is going, HELENA waves it aside and turns away.)
HELENA: Pass.
(JOEY NORVILLINO puts an arm around GIBSON and carries the empty pitcher in
front of him.)
JOEY NORVILLINO: Hey, Gibson. Ha ha. (He puts the empty pitcher on the
counter.) Hey, baby. How about a refill?
(HELENA turns around and puts her hands on the counter.)
HELENA: How about you've had enough? Call me "baby" one more time -
LEONARD: Is there a problem here?
HELENA: Not for long.
JOEY NORVILLINO: Hey, I'm just trying to get a refill.
LEONARD: It's really very simple, Kyle. The customer pays the bar, the bar
pays you. Let's not mess with the system, okay?
JOEY NORVILLINO: I'm buying this round, so make it a domestic, Sweetness.
(HELENA reaches behind the counter and puts a fresh pitcher on the counter.)
HELENA: There.
JOEY NORVILLINO: Do we know each other?
HELENA: No, we don't.
JOEY NORVILLINO: Well, the night is young, baby --
(JOEY reaches out a hand to touch HELENA when suddenly, a man is standing next
to JOEY and stopping him from touching her.)
JACK BARRETT: Haven't changed a bit ... have you, Joey?
JOEY NORVILLINO: Hey, Jack. So, just having a little fun here, man.
JACK BARRETT: Get lost.
(JOEY looks at JACK and smiles a bit. JACK stares at JOEY and doesn't return
the smile. Finally, JOEY gets the hint. He picks up his fresh pitcher and
leaves.)
(JACK steps up to the counter and looks at HELENA.)
JACK BARRETT: Well ... you all right?
HELENA: Ahem. Yeah, thanks.
(JACK turns and leaves to make his way to a table. HELENA and GIBSON watch
him.)
GIBSON KAFKA: (quietly) The gallant return of Jack Barrett, unattainable apple
to your teenage eye.
(HELENA glances at JACK as he sits down. She leans over the counter toward
GIBSON.)
HELENA: And he still doesn't know my name.
GIBSON KAFKA; Well, then the reunion would be a perfect place for you guys to
get reacquainted. Just walk in with me. Then if you want to spend the rest of
the evening pining away over Jack Barrett, so be it.
HELENA: Sorry, Gibson. All out of school spirit.
(Over at the next table, the MEN raise their beer mugs and cheer loudly.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. PARK -- FOUNTAIN - NIGHT]
(The group of four men who sat together at the table in the bar drunkenly make
their way through the park, singing the school anthem at the top of their
lungs.)
ALL: (singing drunkenly) On, New Gotham, on, New Gotham / thrust right through
the line / run the ball straight down the field / a touchdown's ours this time /
(The three friends have their arms around each others shoulders while JOEY
NORVILLINO reaches into his jacket pocket and takes out another bottle of beer.)
ALL: (singing) on, New Gotham, on, New Gotham / thrust right through the line
(The three men continue on as JOEY NORVILLINO stops to open the bottle.)
JOEY NORVILLINO: Hang on, you guys!
ALL: (singing) Run the ball straight down the field / a touchdown's ours this
time
(JOEY still can't get the top off of his beer bottle. The other three continue
on through the park leaving him behind.)
(JOEY puts the edge of the bottle against the trash can and tries to take the
cap off that way.)
JOEY NORVILLINO: Ow!
(JOEY still can't get the cap off.)
VOICE: (whispers) Hey, Joey, it's a twist-off.
FRIEND 2: (b.g.) Go out! Set! Hike!
(JOEY looks at the bottle and twists the cap off. It works. The beer starts to
foam out of the bottle top. JOEY looks at it and laughs.)
JOEY NORVILLINO: Ha ha ha!
(Behind JOEY, the tree branch slowly morphs into a hand ... or rather, an arm
appears out from the tree. The person grabs JOEY from behind and chokes him
around his neck. JOEY gasps.)
(Way out in the distance, his friends have reached the edge of the park near the
trees. They disappear into the brush.)
(JOEY gasps and struggles against the unseen attacker. Finally, the attacker
breaks his neck.)
(JOEY falls to the ground. Dead.)
HARD CUT TO
END OF TEASER
ROLL TITLE CREDITS
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera pushes through the tops of the tall buildings, weaving in and out as it
moves. Suddenly, it takes a sharp turn and spins straight downward to the
ground below.)
CUT TO:
[INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT]
(WADE and BARBARA sit at the dinner table with WADE'S parents.)
WADE: My parents never wanted me to teach.
BARBARA: Really? Why not?
WADE: Something about the high pay, I think.
MRS. BRIXTON: Now, Wade, that's really not fair.
MR. BRIXTON: We couldn't be happier, son. Money's not important.
WADE: Well, you know, Barbara also runs her own business.
(BARBARA puts her fork down and smiles at the BRIXTON'S.)
BARBARA: Yeah, um, sort of an on-line gourmet baking thing.
MRS. BRIXTON: Oh, really? Baking? Did, um, Wade tell you that my macadamia
fudge torte won the Gotham county bake-off?
BARBARA: Well, I'd love to get the recipe.
MRS. BRIXTON: Well, it is one of Wade's favorites. First you start off with a
cup of semisweet chocolate --
MR. BRIXTON: Do you sell on-line?
(BARBARA reaches for her glass, takes a sip, then puts it back on the table.)
BARBARA: Yes. You should check out our site.
MR. BRIXTON: You know, there was a time when I was pretty handy around
computers -- back when we called them "Big Iron".
(They laugh. WADE and BARBARA give each other a look as they smile at the joke.
MRS. BRIXTON puts her hand on MR. BRIXTON'S arm.)
MRS. BRIXTON: Joe, honey, listen, Barbara and I were talking about ...
DINAH: (over radio) Oracle, Delphi's flagged a suspicious death.
(BARBARA starts at the voice in her comm and looks around a bit.)
MR. BRIXTON: Yes.
BARBARA: Will you excuse me?
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera pushes in to toward the Clock Tower.)
CUT TO:
[INT. CLOCK TOWER - NIGHT]
(DINAH is sitting behind the computers. She talks over the comm with BARBARA.)
DINAH: A body was found in New Gotham park. Joey Norvillino -- age 23.
INTERCUT WITH:
[INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT]
(BARBARA listens intently.)
DINAH: (over comm) And get this -
(DINAH hits some keys on the keyboard.)
DINAH: He was in town for the New Gotham High reunion.
BARBARA: (over comm) Okay, I'm on my way.
(BARBARA heads back to the table.)
(Meanwhile, while she's gone, The BRIXTON'S take the opportunity to talk with
WADE about BARBARA.)
MRS. BRIXTON: Honestly, Wade ... it'll never work.
WADE: I thought you liked her, mother.
MRS. BRIXTON; No one is saying that she isn't nice, dear. It's just that she
isn't quite normal, is she?
(The camera slowly moves in closer and around and we see that BARBARA is sitting
behind the bush near the table overhearing everything.)
MRS. BRIXTON: Wade, what kind of a life can you expect to have with someone
like that?
(BARBARA is extremely hurt by what she hears.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- DAY]
(Camera pushes in slowly toward the Clock Tower.)
DINAH: (v.o.) So, how'd the Wade date go?
BARBARA: (v.o.) His parents are, well, they're just ... can we not talk about
this?
CUT TO:
[INT. CLOCK TOWER - DAY]
DINAH: Okay. Business it is.
(BARBARA maneuvers her way up the ramp toward the computer center.)
HELENA: What's the word on Norvillino?
BARBARA: The police report said he slipped and broke his neck on a rock. They
cited the cause of death as an alcohol-related accident.
HELENA: Funny, that was probably the cause of his birth, too.
BARBARA: Something just feels off. Let me take a closer look at the coroner's
report.
(BARBARA leans forward and starts working on the computers.)
BARBARA: So I, uh, take it from your callous attitude that this incident isn't
going to change your mind about attending the reunion.
HELENA: No, my complete lack of desire to ever see these people again is taking
care of that.
BARBARA: (confused) You loved high school.
DINAH: (overhearing) Helena?
BARBARA: Oh, yeah. You happen to be looking at the uber-stylish former captain
of the pep squad, and girl voted "most likely to inspire envy."
HELENA: That was never official.
DINAH: What happened?
HELENA: My mom died, I found out my father was Batman, and New Gotham was
overrun by supervillains.
(ALFRED walks up to them and joining the conversation.)
ALFRED: Well, surely you must be curious, Miss Helena, how time has weighed
upon your classmates.
HELENA: Yeah, sure, but then I got to answer all their questions. What am I
going to do, tell people I'm a meta-vigilante, you know, patrolling the rooftops
of New Gotham?
(DINAH walks up to them and also joins in the conversation.)
HELENA: As far as the rest of the world's concerned, I'm just a bartender.
DINAH: Why are you a bartender? You're the heir to the Wayne fortune. You're
worth millions.
ALFRED: (flatly) Billions.
HELENA: I have dad issues. I don't want anything to do with him or his money.
DINAH: (cheekily) Would buying your adoptive sister a car qualify as having to
do with his money?
ALFRED: If I may, Miss Helena, a little time with Helena Kyle instead of
Huntress might prove beneficial. Also a pleasant diversion.
BARBARA: Okay, I've got the report. (reading) According to the M.E.,
Norvellino's trachea was snapped in two. The odds of a break this clean being
caused by an accident are ...
HELENA: By your Barbara-worry voice, it sounds like it could be really bad.
BARBARA: Bad enough that we should investigate. After Norvillino hit on you,
did, um, anything else significant happen?
HELENA: (smiles) Jack Barrett came in and got rid of the loser before I had a
chance to kick his ass.
(The name sounds awfully familiar to BARBARA and she tries to recall its
significance.)
BARBARA: Jack Barrett -- didn't you have a huge crush on him?
(DINAH smiles with interest at this tidbit of information. She turns to look at
HELENA.)
HELENA: (brushes away its importance) Not huge.
(BARBARA stares at HELENA with disbelief. Yeah, right.)
HELENA: (waves it aside) But it's over now. It's in the past.
BARBARA: Did he remember you?
(HELENA looks down, embarrassed.)
HELENA: (gruffly) No. That would require him talking to me in high school.
But it can't be Jack. I mean, he's like an overgrown boy scout. (adding) A
dashing, ripped, hot boy scout, but definitely not a killer.
BARBARA: Okay, well, check in with Reese. Maybe something didn't make the
report. I'll look into Norvillino's life, see if there's anyone I can possibly
find with a motive.
HELENA: Yeah, well, given his personality, it's not going to be that difficult.
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- SUNSET]
(Camera coasts high above the city skyline.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. SIDEWALK - DAY]
(BARBARA leans over the side of her wheelchair and takes the time to smell the
flowers. She smiles as she inhales.)
BARBARA: Ah.
(WADE walks up behind her. He's carrying a bouquet of tulips.)
WADE: No, way too practical. Yeah. These are more like you.
(He hands her the flowers.)
WADE: Now, tulips look so delicate, but they only bloom after a frost.
BARBARA: (small smile) Thank you.
WADE: I stopped by your classroom.
BARBARA: Yeah, I, uh, had to take off early today. A lot of work to do.
WADE: You've always had a lot of work to do. I called four times. Have dinner
with me tonight. My parents are gone. It'll just be the two of us.
BARBARA; Wade, I'm sorry. I-I -- I can't. I can't.
(BARBARA turns and slowly moves her wheelchair down the sidewalk. WADE follows
her.)
WADE: All right, all right, then at least tell me why. Tell me that I got
hygiene issues or that I-I got bad dress sense -- something.
BARBARA: (smiling) I like how you undress.
(WADE looks at her and blushes a bit. He laughs.)
BARBARA: Look, it's -- it's --it's complicated.
WADE: I like complicated. This is part of what makes you so attractive.
BARBARA: What, just part?
WADE: (leans down and lowers his voice) Well, see, I can't talk about the
other part in public. Come on. Come to dinner.
BARBARA: Okay, okay.
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera turns and swirls above the city building tops.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY - ROOFTOPS - NIGHT]
(HELENA jumps down and lands on her feet on the roof top. She runs across the
roof and jumps over to the next building. She runs across that roof, jumps and
flips over the side.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY - ALLEYWAY - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(HELENA jumps down to the ground. She lands on her feet in front of REESE.)
(REESE is startled a bit and looks at HELENA.)
REESE: Well, hi. Were we supposed to meet?
(He looks up at the building top, then back at HELENA. He starts walking.)
REESE: Oh, wait, what am I thinking? You don't actually make plans, do you?
HELENA: (smiling) Surprise is my ally -- that, and my ineffable joie de vivre.
REESE: (laughs) Okay, whatever you say. Well, if you didn't drop by for a
friendly little visit, what's going on?
(They reach his car. They stop and he turns around to look at HELENA.)
HELENA: Gotham Park --the murder last night.
REESE: Oh, right. Well, the D.A. is calling it an accident, and the witnesses'
stories check out. They didn't see a damn thing. Doesn't seem to matter to
anybody that they were drunk off their asses.
HELENA: Anything that didn't make the report?
REESE: No, no, not really, just that the guy was in town from central city,
here for his High School Reunion. So I don't know. I mean, maybe we just chalk
this one up as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
HELENA: Yeah.
REESE: (continues) I mean, the only other thing we have to go on is he had
just left the Dark Horse Bar. It's a place across town. Do you know it?
HELENA: (doesn't want to reveal too much) No, unh-unh.
REESE: Hmm. Well, I was going to head over there a little later tonight, if you
want to join me.
HELENA: Tonight.
REESE: (nods) Mm-hmm.
(Camera holds on HELENA who is suddenly feeling a little too exposed.)
CUT TO:
[INT. DARK HORSE BAR - NIGHT]
(HELENA talks with her boss.)
HELENA: Please, just one night. That's all I'm asking.
LEONARD: It was "just one night" last Wednesday and last Monday. Look, Helena,
I'm changing the image of the bar. Upscale food, upscale music, upscale
clientele. I need go-getters.
(He stands up and moves toward the bar. HELENA follows him.)
HELENA: People ask for beer. I go get. What more do you want?
LEONARD: Service with a smile brings 'em back every time.
HELENA: Lap dancing brings 'em back every time, too. You want me to try that?
LEONARD: How would I know? I'm gay.
(HELENA starts at this bit of info.)
LEONARD: Maybe you could try being friendly just once. Watch and learn.
(LEONARD uses his hand and passes it horizontally over his face. As he moves
the hand up, he smiles. When he moves his hand down, he doesn't.)
HELENA: How's this?
(HELENA looks at LEONARD and smiles. Painfully.)
(Across the other side of the bar, JACK BARRETT is with STUART THOMSEN who has a
beer mug in his hand. He watches HELENA talk with LEONARD.)
STUART THOMSEN: Look at that. Helena Kyle.
(JACK BARRETT looks up.)
JACK BARRETT: That's who she is? Wow, I should have talked to her more.
(Meanwhile, HELENA continues to try to convince LEONARD to give her the night
off.)
HELENA: Come on, Leonard. Let me off this shift, and I promise you I will be
the friendliest waitress in the history of customer service.
LEONARD: You see, that wasn't friendly.
HELENA: Leonard, it's important.
LEONARD: Double shifts every Saturday for the next two months.
HELENA: (smiles) Thank you.
(She steps out from behind the bar and slowly makes her way out. She turns
around and sees CAM HENDERSON standing in front of her. She recognizes him. He
smiles.)
HELENA: Cam Henderson.
CAM HENDERSON: Helena Kyle. Oh, I'm glad someone remembers me. You'd think
founding a "fortune" 500 company would get you a little bit of respect.
HELENA: (genuinely impressed) Congratulations.
CAM HENDERSON: It doesn't seem to matter, though, because to everyone but you,
I'll just always be "Klutzy Cam." Go figure.
HELENA: Well, I'd love to vandalize memory lane with you, but I really got to
go.
(HELENA moves around CAM edging her way toward the door.)
CAM HENDERSON: (a tad disappointed) Oh.
HELENA: So, uh, another time?
CAM HENDERSON: Yeah. How about tonight, at the reunion?
HELENA: Yeah. If I go, I'll find you.
(STUART THOMSEN walks up behind HELENA and spills his drink onto CAM HENDERSON.
He bursts out laughing at his own joke.)
STUART THOMSEN: Ha ha ha! Real suave.
(CAM HENDERSON leaves angrily.)
STUART THOMSEN: (shouts) Out of your league anyway, Klutz!
(He moves to stand in front of HELENA.)
HELENA: Can I help you with something?
STUART THOMSEN: I definitely think so.
(He looks her over and appreciatively.)
STUART THOMSEN: You've changed, Helena Kyle, and I like it.
HELENA: Is that supposed to be charming?
STUART THOMSEN: Tough words from a bartender.
(He raises his mug of beer and takes a drink. Behind HELENA, JACK BARRETT
approaches them.)
JACK BARRETT: Hey, Thomsen, lay off.
HELENA: Oh, you know, it's okay. I'll just do exactly what the girls in high
school used to do ... ignore him.
STUART THOMSEN: Hey, Hon, guess what. Tonight I'm going to close a deal
that'll make me more money in one day than you'll ever see. (He looks at JACK.)
Ignore that.
(But HELENA doesn't miss a beat.)
HELENA: Good. You can buy yourself a new personality.
(STUART squints at HELENA. He glances at JACK, then turns and leaves the two of
them.)
JACK BARRETT: Very funny.
(HELENA turns around and faces JACK.)
JACK BARRETT: Helena ... Right?
HELENA: Yeah.
(She nods and smiles at him. He looks up at the doorway and sees REESE walk
into the bar.)
(He meets up with LEONARD at the top of the stairs and they shake hands.)
(HELENA ducks behind JACK.)
HELENA: Uh ... um ...
(JACK looks at her strangely. HELENA makes a break for it.)
HELENA: Excuse me.
(HELENA leaves JACK stand there staring at her.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera pushes in to toward the Clock Tower.)
CUT TO:
[INT. CLOCK TOWER - NIGHT]
(DINAH is sitting in the main room doing her homework on the table. The
elevator doors open and HELENA walks rapidly into the room.)
HELENA: Okay, someone's getting awfully close to secret identity land.
(HELENA walks past DINAH and heads for BARBARA who is working in front of the
computers.)
BARBARA: What'd Reese find out?
HELENA: Only that Norvillino was linked to both the Dark Horse and the Reunion
- One more reason for me not to go.
BARBARA: Yeah, well, I did a little digging and found out that your old
classmate had some serious gambling debts in Central City and New Gotham.
HELENA: Good, so we can follow up with his bookies and get Reese off the
"Helena Kyle" track. My life was this close to becoming a french farce.
(DINAH pipes up.)
DINAH: Hey, Molire, I think you're making way too much out of this secret
identity thing.
HELENA: Really? You try keeping a secret with my schedule.
DINAH: What secret? You have no secret identity. You don't wear glasses, you
don't wear a mask.
BARBARA: (amused) She's kind of got a point.
HELENA: I don't wear a mask for combat purposes, all right? They're itchy,
they make you sweat -
BARBARA: Your mascara runs. (to DINAH) It's a vanity thing.
HELENA: I want to look good. Is that a crime? I can have two lives without
looking like an overgrown trick-or-treater.
(At that moment, ALFRED walks into the room carrying a tray with a cup and snack
on it. DINAH turns and sees him.)
DINAH: What do you think, Alfred? Does Helena have a secret identity or not?
(ALFRED walks up to DINAH and stops.)
ALFRED: Actually not. I've always maintained that without a mask, there are no
separate identities. It's a dangerous choice for a crime fighter.
(ALFRED turns and heads up the ramp toward BARBARA.)
ALFRED: That being said, Miss Helena is quite capable, and if she feels she can
manage where others have failed, then I'm sure she can succeed.
(He puts the tray down on the table next to BARBARA and moves to stand in front
of HELENA. He looks at her.)
HELENA: (impressed) How do you do that -- support me and undermine me, all in
the same sentence?
BARBARA: It's a British thing.
(She pops a piece of scone into her mouth. ALFRED smirks wordlessly at
BARBARA.)
DINAH: Why are you hiding from Reese, anyway? He already knows you're the
Huntress.
HELENA: In order to be an effective superhero, you need total separation of
identities.
BARBARA: (disagrees and swallows) Mnh-mnh. That's not entirely true. I mean,
there's no law that says you can't reveal your identity to someone that you
trust. I mean, the same way I shared mine with you and Dinah.
ALFRED: Master Bruce shared his secret with me, though I'd wager it had less to
do with the batcave needing a good tidying up than the psychological relief it
provided.
HELENA: Okay, so what happened to the old "protect your identities at all
costs" thing?
BARBARA: Look, I'm not saying you should tattoo "Hi, I'm Helena Kyle" across
your forehead. I'm just saying that if you think you can trust Reese --
(She puts up a hand to stop the conversation.)
HELENA: Got it. Okay, this is fun and all, but I'd like to point out that our
priority is to stop a killer.
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera pushes in through the buildings, turns and heads down leisurely toward
the streets below.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. STREET -- NIGHT]
(STUART THOMSEN walks away from the parked car and slowly makes his way into the
warehouse. He's talking on his cell phone as he walks.)
STUART THOMSEN: (to phone) Yeah, I'm back. I had a little business to clean
up. Speaking of business, I finally got the heads-up from my inside source at
Gussis Pharmaceuticals. They're about to get approval. Buy 10,000 shares.
And, remember, nothing stupid this time. They'll be going public in a couple of
day so keep it on the D.L. You hear me?
(He hangs up the phone. With a piece of paper in his hand, he walks up to the
parked car.)
(Behind him, the figure of a person wearing a hooded cloak materializes out from
the wall.)
(He holds out the car alarm and disarms it. It chirps twice.)
(He hears something behind him and turns around.)
STUART THOMSEN: What are you doing out here? Get lost or something?
CHAMELEON: Word of advice, Stuart -- in the future, you might want to consider
being a little nicer to people.
(The CHAMELEON grabs STUART and rams his head into the car window. The window
breaks. He pulls STUART out and turns him around so that they look at each
other.)
CHAMELEON: But I guess you'll have to use that advice in hell.
(The CHAMELEON breaks his neck. STUART THOMSEN falls to the ground. The flyer
for "GOTHAM HIGH", the piece of paper he was carrying, falls near his body.)
CHAMELEON: Oh, and thanks for the tip.
(The CHAMELEON picks up the flyer and flips his own cell phone open. He stands
up and walks away.)
CHAMELEON: (to phone) Account 29431 -- buy order, Gussis Pharmaceuticals,
10,000 shares. That's all for now. I have a party to get to.
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[EXT. STREET -- NIGHT]
(The coroners wheel STUART THOMSEN'S body on the gurney toward the Ambulance.
The camera gives us a top view of the activities on the street below.)
(The camera moves over and we see that HELENA is standing on the edge of the
rooftop watching the activities. She leaves with a swirl of her jacket.)
(Camera moves down and we find that REESE is there at the crime scene. He's
holding the Reunion flyer in his hand as he walks toward the building.)
(He walks right by HELENA who leans against the building wall.)
HELENA; Who's the stiff?
(REESE stops and turns around.)
REESE: (sighs) Same M.O. as Gotham Park. Some hotshot wall street guy in from
Metropolis, and, well, judging from the neighborhood, it looks like he brought
all his nasty habits with him. The guy's name was, uh ... Stuart Thomsen, only
23 years old.
(At the mention of the name, HELENA looks at REESE. She can't hide that she
knows him.)
REESE: What? You know the guy?
HELENA: (lies) No.
(He sees her strange behavior.)
REESE: Okay, Huntress, listen. If this is something personal to you, it'll
stay right here. I promise you that. But if you know anything about the vic --
Who he knew or why he was in town -- you got to give that up.
HELENA: Norvillino had gambling debts. I was just running down a list of his
bookies. Maybe that's their connection. You should see if Thomsen had the same
problem.
REESE; Wall street guy into gambling, huh? I've heard stranger things. Check
this out.
(REESE holds the Reunion flyer up for her to look at. It's in an evidence bag.)
REESE: It's an invitation to the New Gotham High reunion. Does that mean
anything to you?
HELENA: Nope.
REESE: No.
(REESE turns to read the flyer. It says:
"NEW GOTHAM HIGH
INVITES YOU
TO THE 5TH YEAR CLASS REUNION" )
(As he looks at the flyer, there's a wooshing sound. When he looks up, HELENA
is gone.)
(He looks around a bit, and sighs a little. He's no longer surprised by it. He
turns and leaves.)
CUT TO:
[INT. CLOCK TOWER - NIGHT]
(HELENA walks toward the small kitchen where BARBARA and ALFRED are both
reading.)
HELENA: What? I did not run away.
BARBARA: (amused) You're scared. Revealing your identity to Reese means
progressing your relationship. You ran.
HELENA: Okay, there is no relationship to run from.
ALFRED: I believe that is Miss Barbara's point.
HELENA: That's not it. It's -- look, it's not like I lied to him.
BARBARA: Well, no, but you did withhold information -- the fact that it's more
than likely that these killings are related to your reunion.
HELENA: I'm not scared. I just don't want him on the Helena Kyle trail.
BARBARA: It's your call, but you do realize that this means that you're
definitely going.
HELENA: Yes. Dream come true.
(DINAH walks up the stairs and joins them.)
DINAH: What's going on?
BARBARA: We're working tonight. The killer's at the reunion.
(DINAH'S face lights up with a smile.)
DINAH: Is Helena going to the reunion?
ALFRED: Oh, do resist the temptation to rub it in.
DINAH: Oh, sweet irony.
HELENA: Barbara, there might be another connection -- me. Both guys were at
the Dark Horse Bar before the killings, both hit on me, and both got into it
with Jack Barrett.
BARBARA: While you were out, I researched the M.O. That neck snap is
consistent with a lethal kill technique used by the delta force ... and Barrett
served in the armed forces.
HELENA: Was he delta?
BARBARA: It's classified, and their records are encrypted. It's going to take
some time to break it. So until then, we're going to have to flush him out. If
this guy is targeting guys that hit on you, then we're going to have to, uh...
(Standing behind BARBARA, ALFRED cheekily straightens his tie and winks at
HELENA.)
HELENA: Then I guess I got to find a guy to hit on me.
BARBARA: Yeah.
CUT TO:
[EXT. NEW GOTHAM CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT]
(Camera slowly moves down from the starry sky to the city skyline.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NEW GOTHAM HIGH - CLASS REUNION - NIGHT]
(Camera close up of the Reunion flyer and someone signing in. The person
finishes, picks their flyer up and moves in. Standing next in line is GIBSON
and HELENA.)
GIBSON KAFKA: (smugly) Entering with Helena Kyle. (He leans over the table to
sign in.) Finally, my dreams are coming to fruition. (He straightens.) Can't
you just feel the swirling maelstrom of Gibson envy building?
(He puts the pen aside. HELENA reaches for it to sign in.)
HELENA: You do realize we're setting you up as a target for a vicious killer.
GIBSON KAFKA: Worth it.
(GIBSON grabs the name tags and waves HELENA'S in front of her. He reaches up
to put it on her.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Here you go. Allow me.
HELENA: Hey.
(HELENA grabs his wrist to stop him.)
HELENA: That hand goes any closer to where I think it was going, I will twist
it off, and you will be known as "stumpy" for the rest of your natural life.
(Behind them, CAM HENDERSON walks in. He sees HELENA and GIBSON.)
HELENA: Got it? I don't do name tags.
GIBSON KAFKA: (shakes his head) Yeah, me neither. Not cool.
(GIBSON looks inside.)
GIBSON KAFKA: All right, let's hurry. Your time as my trophy date is limited.
I want to make the most of it.
(He grabs her arm, then they shuffle a bit and he holds out his arm for her to
grab.)
GIBSON KAFKA: (muttering) Let's see. You go on the inside.
(They finally have the arm thing settled and head into the reunion.)
HELENA: This is going to be the worst night of my life.
(They step into the crowded room.)
BARBARA: Huntress, I've set up a remote link to the Clock Tower. It shouldn't
be much longer before I have the list of potentials.
CUT TO:
[INT. BARBARA'S CLASS ROOM - NIGHT]
(BARBARA is behind her desk while DINAH helps finish setting up.)
BARBARA: Dinah, I can take care of the rest. Why don't you go patrol? This
guy's M.O. is to strike in seclusion, so why don't you make sure there's no
seclusion?
DINAH: (thoroughly enjoying herself) Consider me on full straggler alert.
(DINAH heads out the door.)
CUT TO:
[CLASS REUNION]
(HELENA turns around and sees JACK BARRETT standing on the far side of the
room.)
HELENA: Oracle, we're on. (HELENA turns to look at GIBSON.) You know, for a
homicidal maniac bent on wiping out anyone that shows me any interest, he sure
is hot. At least he remembers me.
GIBSON KAFKA: Looks aren't everything, you know. What I lack in the chiseled
physique department, I more than make up for with my impressive streak of not
killing people.
HELENA: Hmm.
(HELENA turns to look back at JACK BARRETT. Someone hits her on the rump.)
HELENA: Gibson! Mission or not, no grabbing, especially not in the bathing
suit parts.
GIBSON KAFKA: I did no such thing.
(GIBSON looks over by the door and sees a blur move by.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Wait, over there --did you see? It was a shimmer.
(HELENA turns to look back at the door, but sees nothing.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Like -- like the wall shimmered.
(HELENA turns back to look at GIBSON. She doesn't believe it for a moment.)
HELENA: Yeah. Yeah, I'm cutting you off.
GIBSON KAFKA: I haven't started.
HELENA: I know. Come on.
(HELENA grabs GIBSON'S tie and pulls him along behind her. They make their way
toward JACK BARRETT.)
(Meanwhile, CAM HENDERSON walks around the room. He bumps into a blonde-haired
woman.)
CAM HENDERSON: Sorry.
(HELENA and GIBSON reach JACK BARRETT. GIBSON, intending to have his fun with
the role he's playing, reaches up and puts an arm around HELENA'S shoulders.)
(As they approach, JACK BARRETT turns around to meet them.)
HELENA: Jack Barrett. You remember Gibson Kafka. He's my --
(HELENA hesitates.)
BARBARA: (over comm) Huntress, I decrypted the delta list.
HELENA: (she can't get it out) My -
BARBARA: (over comm) Barrett's not on it. He's not the killer.
(HELENA doesn't get it out fast enough. GIBSON helps her out.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Her boyfriend. We're in love.
(GIBSON looks at HELENA and lightly caresses her arm. HELENA look at GIBSON.)
HELENA: What I meant to say was he's my delusional friend that was just about
to get me a drink.
GIBSON KAFKA: But -- but --
HELENA: Thank you, Gibson.
(HELENA looks at GIBSON, who gets it. He steps away to get the drinks.)
BARBARA: Sit tight. I'm checking the Delta Force list against the rest of your
classmates.
JACK BARRETT: Helena, I was hoping I'd run into you.
HELENA: Really? So what have you been up to?
JACK BARRETT: Well, I'm in the ad game now. Sort of fell into it after
college.
(GIBSON gets the drinks and returns.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Your libation, dear.
(He hands her the drink. HELENA looks back at JACK.)
HELENA: Go on.
JACK BARRETT: You know, forget about me. I'm much more interested in your
story.
HELENA: I've been bartending.
JACK BARRETT: Yeah, I know. I mean, what else? I can tell there must be
another side to you.
HELENA: I'm a really good bartender.
BARBARA: Okay, we've got a problem. No one on either list matches up.
HELENA: Look, I hate to do this, but I got to go, so we'll catch up another
time.
JACK BARRETT: I'd like that.
(HELENA smiles at him. She and GIBSON step away. As she walks by, HELENA sees
the shimmer. She stops GIBSON.)
HELENA: What the hell was that?
(HELENA looks down at her drink. She heads out. GIBSON follows her.)
CUT TO:
[INT. BARBARA'S CLASSROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(HELENA and GIBSON take what they saw and report back to BARBARA.)
BARBARA: So it looked like a shimmer?
HELENA: Almost like the background became 3 Dimensional.
BARBARA: So like --like a transparent meta-human?
GIBSON KAFKA; No, there's one in Akron. This has got to be different. Maybe an
invisible guy.
BARBARA: Invisibility wouldn't create distortion.
GIBSON KAFKA: Well, it's possible that what we saw was caused by a meta that
camouflaged himself.
BARBARA: True, in which case, a flat image would take on a 3-d texture.
GIBSON KAFKA: And when it moved, it would create a shimmer effect.
HELENA: Like a Chameleon. Is that even possible?
GIBSON KAFKA: Hey, I remember how many nose hairs my pediatrician had.
Anything is possible.
BARBARA: Given meta physiology, there would be certain genetic changes.
GIBSON KAFKA: A change like that would almost surely cause the person to
display side effects in the human form.
HELENA: (shakes her head) Such as...
BARBARA: The constant transformation could affect the neural pathways to
certain parts of the brain. The cerebellum in particular.
HELENA: Okay, you guys, I don't have the time or the skill to perform mass
lobotomies.
BARBARA: You don't have to. The symptoms are obvious. In human form, our guy
would suffer from impaired motor control.
GIBSON KAFKA: That would make coordination and balance difficult to maintain.
HELENA: (realizes) So he'd be a klutz.
BARBARA: Well, the technical term is ataxia, but, uh ... yeah, he'd be a klutz.
(HELENA stands up.)
HELENA: I know who he is.
BARBARA: You do?
HELENA: Yeah, and I know exactly who he's going to kill next.
(HELENA heads out of the classroom.)
(BARBARA turns and looks at GIBSON who watches HELENA leave.)
CUT TO:
[INT. REUNION - NIGHT]
(REESE holds out his police badge.)
REESE: Detective Jesse Reese, New Gotham P.D. I got a couple questions about
some of your alumni.
CUT TO:
[HALLWAY - NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]
(The "3-d shimmer" moves into the hallway, then disappears. A reunion goer
walks by and up the stairs.)
(JACK BARRETT walks down the stairs toward the water fountain for a drink.)
(When he's through, the walks down the hallway. He takes a couple of steps,
when a figure drops down from the ceiling and knocks him to the floor. He's
unconscious.)
(HELENA steps up and kicks CAM HENDERSON away from JACK BENNETT. He flies off
and crashes on the floor a distance away. He gets up and looks at HELENA.)
CAM HENDERSON: I thought you were going to meet me. You said if you came, you
would find me. You seem to have found time for everyone else.
HELENA: Does the phrase "polite brush-off" mean anything to you?
(CAM HENDERSON shimmers out from in front of HELENA and shimmers back in behind
her. He walks back into the hallway.)
CAM HENDERSON: You shouldn't have stood me up.
(HELENA turns around.)
(Right in front of her eyes, CAM HENDERSON shimmers out of sight. HELENA looks
around unable to see him.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) And after all I've done for you.
(She turns around and looks. She still doesn't see him.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. CLASS REUNION - HALLWAY -- NIGHT]
(We continue where we left off. JACK BARRETT is out cold in the middle of the
hallway floor.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Don't fight me, Helena. I love you. I always have.
(HELENA steps over JACK and looks around the hallway for any sign of CAM.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) From the first moment I saw you, I knew. Why didn't you
just tell me how you felt?
(The doorknob rattles. With cat-like reflexes, HELENA turns and punches out
toward the voice.)
CAM HENDERSON: I was afraid -
(Her fist crashes through the glass in the door. She turns around when she
hears CAM'S voice coming from behind her. CAM is leaning leisurely against the
green tiled wall.)
CAM HENDERSON: ... afraid of what would happen. I saw the guys you dated -
(He straightens and puts his hands in his pockets.)
CAM HENDERSON: ... the guys every girl dated. I wasn't ready.
(HELENA steps forward and kicks out at CAM. He shimmers and vanishes in front
of her. She misses him completely. His voice continues speaking to her. She
turns around to look behind her in the direction that the voice is coming from.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) But I've spent every waking moment since high school
redefining myself, and now I'm finally ready. The only left to make people
finally see me is you.
(HELENA walks cautiously through the hallway, looking for CAM.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Why won't you love me?
HELENA: Um, because you kill people?
(She hears a squeak and turns around just in time to see CAM shimmer in front of
the lockers.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) I killed for you.
(HELENA kicks out at the shimmer strong enough to dent the lockers, but she
missed him again.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Helena. How much more pure can love be?
(HELENA looks around the hallway.)
HELENA: I don't know what's more disturbing -- the thought that you've harbored
a psychotic crush for years, or that after confessing to multiple murders, you
still think you've got a shot with me.
(HELENA sees it. There's a shimmer in front of the door. She steps forward and
kicks it breaking through the door, but missing CAM completely.)
(She turns around when the voice comes from behind her.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Oh, we'll be together, Helena Kyle.
HELENA: No, Cam. We will never be together.
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) You'll see. And the next time we meet, we'll do it on
my terms.
(HELENA stops and waits. She hears nothing.)
HELENA: Cam!
(She looks down the hallway toward JACK BARRETT who is still unconscious on the
ground. He groans and slowly comes to.)
(HELENA rushes forward and kneels down next to him as he tries to sit up.)
JACK BARRETT: What -- what happened?
HELENA: Um ... vandals. They --you must have surprised them.
JACK BARRETT: Lucky you weren't here. You could have been really hurt.
HELENA: Yeah. Real lucky.
JACK BARRETT: Shouldn't we report it?
(HELENA helps JACK to his feet.)
HELENA: Yeah, call security. They're on it. You should, uh, you should relax.
JACK BARRETT: Good advice. Come on, let me, uh, get you a drink.
(Just then, HELENA hears BARBARA over the comm.)
BARBARA: (from comm) Huntress, meet me in my classroom. We need to debrief.
HELENA: I-I can't.
JACK BARRETT: This isn't some kind of 12-step thing, is it? Because I'd be
mortified.
HELENA: No, no. I could -- I could drink you under the table.
JACK BARRETT: Well, is there someone else?
HELENA: No. Look, I just got to go.
JACK BARRETT: Well, I didn't mean to scare you off. Just I felt like we
clicked, you know? Listen to me. I sound like I'm back in high school.
HELENA: Jack, this just isn't a good time.
JACK BARRETT: So you're saying there could be a good time?
HELENA: (smiles) Yeah, maybe.
(HELENA turns and heads back down the hallway toward BARBARA'S classroom. She
takes a couple of steps, then like a schoolgirl, she turns around to glance back
at JACK who watches her as she leaves. She giggles, then heads toward the
classroom.)
CUT TO:
[MAIN REUNION ROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(REESE sits there and listens to an inebriated MR. FINN, JOEY'S friend as he
holds a bottle of beer in his hand and answers the questions.)
MR. FINN: Joey was the man. The man!
REESE: Listen, I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. Finn, I am. But did you or Mr.
Norvillino know a man named Stuart Thomsen?
MR. FINN: Kind of. We didn't really hang. He was one of those dorky young
republicans. Did he do it? 'Cause I'll rip his throat out.
REESE: (interrupting) No -- no, he didn't do it. He was killed earlier
tonight.
MR. FINN: Man. I just saw him, too. It's like everybody I see dies.
REESE: When was the last time you saw Thomsen?
MR. FINN: At The Dark Horse Bar. We went today in honor of Joey. He loved the
wings. (He raises the bottle) To Joey! It's a great place. They've got these
totally hot bartenders. You know ... one of them's here.
(This gets REESE'S attention.)
REESE: Wait a minute -- a bartender from The Dark Horse bar went to New Gotham
high?
MR. FINN: Yeah. Helena ... something. Kyle -- that's it. Man, she's all
grown up. Mm. Hot. Generally hot. Caliente. (he raises a finger and makes a
sizzling sound.) Hot.
REESE: (nods and backs away) Thanks.
(REESE closes his notebook, turns and leaves.)
CUT TO:
[BARBARA'S CLASSROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(BARBARA, GIBSON and HELENA are back in the classroom.)
BARBARA: Sounds like he not only has the camouflaging ability of a chameleon,
but also the proportional strength and speed.
HELENA: Yeah, not to mention the charm.
GIBSON KAFKA: That's one lethal lizard. Are these doors steel reinforced?
HELENA: He's out of his mind, Barbara. He's still on the loose. Hell, Jack
could still be in danger.
GIBSON KAFKA: Hey, screw Jack. What about me?
BARBARA: Dinah's on top of the Jack situation. (to comm) Report, Dinah?
INTERCUT WITH:
[MAIN REUNION ROOM - SIMULTANEOUS]
DINAH: All quiet on the Jack front. I've got him in sight.
(As DINAH reports, she glances behind her where JACK is talking with another
person. She smiles.)
(Back in the classroom, HELENA recalls the confrontation.)
HELENA: Cam said "on his terms." He goes out and kills two guys to impress me,
and now he's playing hard to get.
BARBARA: This is about control, Helena, and we need to wrestle it back.
HELENA: Yeah, I will. This time on my terms.
(HELENA heads out of the classroom. She opens the door. Still concerned for
his safety, GIBSON rushes forward and reaches for the doorknob to close the
door.)
(BARBARA watches his behavior. GIBSON sees BARBARA watching him and tries to
make like he's still cool and okay with everything. He puts his arm casually on
the shelf and takes a deep breath.)
(BARBARA returns to work.)
CUT TO:
[HALLWAY]
(In the hallway, the janitor sweeps the floor. JACK BARRETT walks past the
janitor and down the hallway. A short distance behind him, DINAH follows. As
soon as she realizes where he's going, she calls to BARBARA.)
DINAH: Oracle, he's going into the men's room.
BARBARA: So follow him.
DINAH: It's the men's room.
(JACK pushes the door open and walks inside.)
INTERCUT WITH:
[CLASSROOM]
BARBARA: Dinah, we're dealing with a guy that can disappear like a chameleon.
Okay, you can't let him out of your sight.
(DINAH takes a couple steps forward and looks around to make sure that no one's
looking. Right.)
DINAH: (sighs) All right.
(DINAH walks into the men's room.)
CUT TO:
[INT. MAIN REUNION ROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(REESE walks leisurely across the room toward the open high school yearbook. He
pulls out his notebook and looks for the name he's looking for.)
REESE: Okay. Kyle, Kyle.
(He starts flipping through the yearbook and opens the page marked "SENIORS".
In the square where "HELENA KYLE"S picture should be, there's a big blank "PHOTO
NOT AVAILABLE".)
REESE: Oh, you got to be kidding me.
(He shuts the book closed in frustration.)
CUT TO:
[HALLWAY IN FRONT MEN'S ROOM]
(Camera opens on the men's room door. It opens and JACK BARRETT walks out.
DINAH follows him out the door and down through the hallway. She bumps into two
reunion attendees. He look at her and grin, then head toward the restroom.)
CUT TO:
[STAIRS]
(HELENA reaches the landing just above the last flight of stairs. She pauses
and looks around, then walks down the last flight to the hallway where she
started.)
HELENA: Another dead end. For all we know, I could have passed him a hundred
times.
BARBARA: (over comm) Hang in there. Assuming our chameleon guy maintains
normal human physiology while cloaked,
INTERCUT WITH:
[CLASSROOM]
(BARBARA and GIBSON are busy working on the device. She rattles on without
missing a beat.)
BARBARA: I'm constructing a device that should permanently stabilize his
molecular structure.
HELENA: Barbara.
(There's a quiet pause and BARBARA looks up. She immediately understands what
HELENA'S getting at.)
BARBARA: Right, um, techno-babbling.
HELENA: No, I get it. You're going to make him look normal.
BARBARA: Exactly.
HELENA: I bought a dictionary. Let me know when you're done.
GIBSON KAFKA: (amazed) Her vocabulary now is as exquisite as her beauty.
(BARBARA stares at GIBSON is utter amazement.)
CUT TO:
[HALLWAY]
(MR. FINN walks drunkenly down the hallway. He looks up and sees HELENA walking
toward him.)
MR. FINN: (slurs) Helena Kyle. (He puts his hands over his eyes and covers
them.) I-I can't look at you. Everyone I see dies. Must avert eyes.
(He slowly walks past her, his eyes averted. HELENA takes pity on him and
guides him back to the Main Room.)
(She watches him as he heads in that direction.)
HELENA: Must return to party.
(Next to the lockers, a shimmer appears. It gets bigger and finally solidifies
into CAM HENDERSON. He reaches up and kisses her on her cheek. Then he runs.)
(HELENA gasps and watches as CAM looks back to see if she's following him.)
HELENA: Oracle, he found me.
(HELENA follows CAM.)
CUT TO:
[HELENA'S POV]
(The hallway doors open into another hallway as she continues to follow CAM.
She passes the stairs and turns.)
CUT TO:
[HALLWAY]
(She opens the door and steps into another hallway. Immediately, the locker
doors start opening one by one, all pointing into one direction. As she
watches, the doors open one by one starting with the door nearest her.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Come and get me, my sweet.
(CAM' laughs.)
(HELENA stares down the hallway. She doesn't move.)
INTERCUT WITH:
[CLASSROOM]
(BARBARA continues to work on the device.)
BARBARA: Huntress, what's going on?
HELENA: He wants me to follow him.
(HELENA takes off in pursuit.)
(Back in the classroom, GIBSON doesn't say anything and just watches BARBARA
work.)
(Meanwhile, as she walks through the hallway, HELENA passes one of the open
doors. She glances into the room and walks past it. She takes a couple steps
back to really look into the room.)
(She steps into the science lab when she realizes what's inside.)
[SCIENCE LAB]
(On top of the lab table is a timer hooked up to two flasks, one with blue
liquid and the other with yellow liquid. The time is counting down at 3:18.)
HELENA: Oracle, how sharp are your bomb-defusing skills?
INTERCUT WITH:
[CLASSROOM]
(BARBARA raises her head, surprised.)
BARBARA: What did he do?
(HELENA leans in close to look at the device. It's counting down at 3:08.)
HELENA: A fairly-ominous-looking device filled with colored liquid, attached to
a digital timer.
BARBARA: Okay, start with the timer.
(Suddenly, an invisible force pushes HELENA away from the bomb. She flies
backward till she hits the back wall.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Too late, sweetheart. The timer's been triggered.
(HELENA gets up and looks around the empty room.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Very soon, an aggressively corrosive toxin will release,
and we will die together in eternal, if somewhat messy, romantic bliss.
HELENA: Along with anyone who wanders down the hall.
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Collateral damage.
(CAM hits HELENA back against the wall where he pins her back. She's stuck
there, unable to move. The air around her shimmers.)
(The timer reads 2:16 ... and counting.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) Just be with me.
(HELENA gasps.)
(Finally, HELENA kicks at the shimmer and the invisible CAM flies across the
room where he hits the bookshelf against the far wall. The bookshelf falls on
top of him.)
HELENA: Never. Can you imagine what our children would look like?
(HELENA steps forward and looks around the room cautiously for CAM.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) One way or another, we're going to be together, Helena.
It's what I've always dreamed, and tonight, my dreams will come true.
(HELENA glances over at the bomb. The timer reads: 2:02 ... and counting.)
FADE OUT.
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[INT. NEW GOTHAM HIGH SCHOOL REUNION - SCIENCE LAB - NIGHT]
(Camera opens on the timer. It reads 1:33 ... 1:32 ... and it continues to
count down.)
(HELENA paces the space in front of the black board, unable to get to the bomb.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) You can't see me, you can't get by me, and you can't
stop it.
INTERCUT WITH:
[CLASSROOM]
(BARBARA overhears everything. She calls for help.)
BARBARA: Dinah, I need you in here immediately.
(DINAH is in the main hall keeping her eye on JACK. She takes a final glance
over at him, then heads out.)
DINAH: I'm on my way.
(Inside the science lab, the timer counts down from 1:21.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) If I can't convince you to be with me, then I'll make
you.
HELENA: We're not so good with rejection, are we?
(HELENA steps forward looking for CAM.)
CAM HENDERSON: (v.o.) I make do.
(HELENA is hit. She grunts and twists as she flies to the side, her body
hitting the wall.)
(As she falls to the floor, DINAH appears in the doorway carrying a circular
device. HELENA looks up at DINAH.)
DINAH: Cover!
(DINAH slides the device into the center of the room. It whirrs and activates.
The device emits a blinding white light that permeates every crack and shadow of
the room.)
(When the device stops, CAM HENDERSON is standing in the center of the room. It
worked. He looks down at his hands.)
(HELENA and DINAH move fast.)
HELENA: (to DINAH) Make sure no one's in the hallway.
DINAH: Okay.
(DINAH runs out of the room. HELENA runs and heads for CAM.)
HELENA: Gotcha.
(She runs up the side of the wall and uses the momentum to jump, spin and kick
CAM. He goes tumbling toward the side cabinets.)
(HELENA looks at the timer. It now reads :12 (seconds) ... and counting.)
BARBARA: Huntress, how long?
(HELENA leans in to look at the device.)
HELENA: About six seconds. I got a whole lot of wires here.
(GIBSON watches as BARBARA makes the decision.)
BARBARA: No time to defuse. Get out of there.
(HELENA takes the advice and turns to head out the door. CAM sees her leave and
tries to stop her. He runs to block her path.)
CAM HENDERSON: No!
(HELENA turns around and kicks CAM in the stomach. He goes flying backward
against the wall. He immediately gets up to go after her.)
BARBARA: (over comm) Helena! Get out of there!
(CAM takes a couple of steps and slips on a text book. He falls to the floor.)
BARBARA: (over comm) Close the door.
(He looks up, then turns to look at the timer. It's down to three seconds.)
(HELENA reaches the hall and turns to close the door.)
BARBARA: (over comm) Seal off the gas.
CAM HENDERSON: No, no, no, no!
(HELENA holds the door shut. Inside the room, the timer hits zero and the two
flasks bursts. The liquid inside the flasks combined produce a white-colored
gas.)
(As the gas fills the room, it reaches CAM HENDERSON and reacts with his
metabolism. His skin starts changing colors. He cries out in pain, moaning as
he struggles against the gas.)
(In a short while, the disappears completely, turned into dust.)
(Outside the room, HELENA and DINAH watch. BARBARA and GIBSON join them.)
HELENA: What happened to him?
BARBARA: The gas must have reacted with his metabolic mutation.
(They all turn away from the room to discuss it further.)
DINAH: He turned to dust.
GIBSON KAFKA: He just wanted to be seen. Ironic for a meta-chameleon.
(No one says anything. GIBSON looks at HELENA and something occurs to him.)
GIBSON KAFKA: Hey, any chance of our date --
HELENA: That ended with our chameleon friend.
GIBSON KAFKA: Worth a shot.
HELENA: I think I'm going to get out of here anyway.
DINAH: Why? There's a party. Go have fun. You saved the school.
HELENA: And the only ones that'll ever know about that are right here. No
thank you.
BARBARA: Come on, do you really care what those people think?
HELENA: It's hard not to when you know what they think is wrong.
BARBARA: Well, I know it's frustrating, but I think there's someone in there
that would love Helena Kyle, bartender extraordinaire.
(HELENA thinks about it for a moment, then smiles. DINAH smiles also. BARBARA
turns to look at GIBSON who seems put out that his "date" ended.)
CUT TO:
[MAIN REUNION HALL - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]
(Inside, the party continues. HELENA walks across the dance floor toward JACK
BARRETT. He's talking with a woman who's leaving.)
JACK BARRETT: (to the woman) It was great to see you again.
(She steps away just as HELENA steps up to JACK. He turns and sees her. She
smiles.)
HELENA: Hi.
JACK BARRETT: Hey. I thought maybe you'd left.
HELENA: It's been a weird night.
JACK BARRETT: Yeah, vandals, and there was an announcement about a gas leak on
the second floor.
HELENA: Public school, right?
JACK BARRETT: Yeah. Here's the thing, Helena -- I'm moving back to New Gotham,
and I would love to get together sometime.
(Just as she's about to have her high school dreams fulfilled, HELENA sees REESE
walk through the back of the room. Her face falls as she realizes the simple
truth about everything.)
(JACK sees the look on HELENA'S face.)
JACK BARRETT: What's wrong? Too much pressure?
HELENA: No, it's --it's not that.
JACK BARRETT: Did I turn out that bad?
HELENA: No, actually, uh, it's me who's changed.
JACK BARRETT: (With his eyes on her, he nods.) I can tell.
(HELENA'S eyes once again find REESE just as he approaches a group of women to
question.)
REESE: (b.g.) Detective Jesse Reese, New Gotham ...
(HELENA makes a choice.)
HELENA: Look ... I wasn't completely honest with you before. There sort of is
someone else in my life.
(He smiles and nods.)
JACK BARRETT: Doesn't surprise me.
HELENA: Jack, I'm sorry. (she smiles) But it was really, really good to see
you again.
JACK BARRETT: You too. (He puts a hand on her arm in a parting gesture.) Good
luck, Helena Kyle.
(JACK leaves.)
(HELENA smiles and shakes her head.)
(She takes a couple steps forward and taps REESE on the shoulder. He turns
around.)
(He sees her and turns around toward HELENA, completely forgetting the women he
was questioning.)
REESE: Huntress. What are you doing here? What, did you track the killer
here?
HELENA: I tracked him, I found him, and I stopped him. It's all over. And the
best part - (she chuckles) -- no mess.
REESE: Really? Well, nice work.
HELENA: Thanks.
REESE: So what was he after?
HELENA: A girl.
REESE: Mm. Let me guess - Helena Kyle.
(Hearing her name from REESE, startles her for a moment. A look passes over her
face and she finally admits it.)
HELENA: Yeah.
REESE: Well, who is she?
(And she takes the plunge.)
HELENA: Me.
REESE: (surprised) What?
HELENA: I'm Helena Kyle. (REESE looks at her, confused.) Now you know.
(She smiles. He stops and thinks about it and finally gets it.)
REESE: Oh. (He lowers his head and closes his eyes. He looks back at her.)
Why are you telling me this now?
HELENA: Because for some reason, when you say "nice work," it means something
to me, and -- and I realize that your opinion is the only one here that matters.
REESE: So then all of this here --this is your reunion.
(HELENA reaches into her bag and pulls out the name tag - the one GIBSON wrote
for her. She shows it to REESE.)
HELENA: Um ... yeah.
(He takes the name tag and laughs.)
REESE: Helena Kyle.
HELENA: Hi.
REESE: So tell me ...
(REESE steps forward and puts the name tag on HELENA. She doesn't protest.)
REESE: Miss Helena Kyle, what have you been up to these past five years?
HELENA: Well, I am a bartender by day, and a meta-vigilante patrolling the
rooftops of New Gotham by night.
REESE: You're a bartender, huh?
HELENA: Yeah. A really good bartender.
REESE: Mm-hmm. (smiles) Yeah. I bet you are.
(This really pleases HELENA and she smiles back at him. Camera holds on
HELENA.)
FADE TO BLACK.
