Previously on The 4400:
Tess
(Abendson Psychiatric Care
Facility) Kevin is a genius, you know. But he doesn’t brag about it. (when
Tom and Diana take Tess from the facility, Kevin attacks Tom)
Clayton
(after the tower the patients
built works) Kevin, did you just speak to me?
Kevin
I haven’t said anything for a
long time.
Clayton
Try six years.
Tom
You’re saying that Burkhoff is
the father of the 4400 technology.
Kevin
I can think again, too.
Tom
Kyle never came home last night.
Danny
Kyle said he blacked out.
Tom
You could have come to me,
Danny, told me what was going on. He’s your cousin, your friend.
Danny
Kyle said he thinks he did
something during one of his blackouts. He seemed really freaked out about
it.
Alana
This is insane! Why would Kyle
want to shoot Jordan Collier?
Tom
If it happened during one of his
blackouts, he wouldn’t need a reason. I don’t remember them telling me they
turned my son into a murderer. (after learning the truth) I kept hoping I
was wrong about this.
Alana
This is not Kyle’s doing.
You’ve got to hold on to that.
Tom
(finding Kyle in Linda’s home)
Kyle. You weren’t in control of your actions, Kyle. (flashback: Kyle shoots
Collier from a rooftop) You did not kill Jordan Collier. (after a suspect
for the murder has been apprehended; to Alana on the telephone) Forget about
the flight. Bring Kyle home. They just arrested a suspect in the Collier
killing.
Diana
(in her home; to Maia) They
caught that man, the one who we were looking for. It’s all over.
Maia
Not yet.
(opening scene: Thursday, July
28, 5:37 pm; NTAC; in a medical ward; patients hole up behind a barricaded
door; Tom is trying to knock down the door)
Maia
Mommy, I’m scared.
Diana
I know, Baby. I’m scared, too.
But it’s going to be okay, ‘cause Mommy’s here. Okay? (she readies her
weapon) Whatever is coming through that door, I’ll protect you. (Tom
finally bursts through the door; she and Tom level their weapons at each
other’s faces)
(scene change: Tom’s home; ten
hours before; Thursday, July 28, 7:22 am; Tom checks his E-mail on his
laptop; a message reads: “Today is Jordan Collier’s Birthday”; when he opens
the message, it reads: “He died on NTAC’s watch”)
Tom
What the hell does that mean?
Kyle
(entering) What does what mean?
Tom
Nothing. It’s just some
crank—(he sighs) It’s nothing. Guess it’s Jordan Collier’s birthday.
Kyle
I see the Washington Review gave
him a birthday present. (he lays down a newspaper) You read this? They
talk like it’s an open and shut case.
Tom
He made threats against
Collier. Two witnesses picked him out of line-up.
Kyle
But they’re wrong. Roy Marsden
didn’t kill Jordan Collier.
Tom
And neither did you, Kyle
Kyle
You told me he’d never see a
courtroom. They want to execute this guy.
Tom
It’s not gonna happen, Kyle. No
one can put him up on that roof. Any—any public defender will have a motion
to dismiss in front of a judge by this time next week.
Kyle
What if you’re wrong? What if
they find him guilty? Am I supposed to do, nothing?
Tom
Marsden has been in and out of
jail since he was fifteen: theft, assault, attempted rape.
Kyle
But he didn’t kill anyone.
Tom
And, he’s not gonna be convicted
of it, Kyle. I’m not gonna let it happen.
Kyle
Neither will I.
Tom
Kyle, it’s not going to be easy,
but you’re gonna have to start putting all this behind you. It’s your first
day back at school, and I want you focused and fierce and thinking about
“A’s.” (he ruffles Kyle’s hair)
Kyle
Okay. (he and Tom shake hands)
Okay. (he exits)
Tom
All right. (he closes his
laptop)
(scene change: Diana’s home;
Maia’s bedroom)
Diana
(entering) Sweetie! Mrs. Benke
is gonna be here any minute. It’s time to get up. (she pulls back the
covers and sits on the bed) Hmm?
Maia
I don’t feel good.
Diana
You got a real fever, young
lady. (she looks at Maia’s elbow and finds a rash) Hey! How long have you
had that?
(scene change: 4400 Center)
Shawn
(in an interview) Dishonest?
No, no, no. I don’t think we’re being dishonest at all. Human beings use
less than twenty percent of their brain capacity. Everything else is just
collecting cobwebs. Here at the 4400 Center, we’re trying to tap into that
unused potential.
Interviewer
So, your own ability: you
believe it stems from increased brainpower.
Shawn
Show me another explanation.
Look. Whether you believe we were taken into the future or not, somebody did
change us, and they used technology to do it. We’re just trying to figure
out how and share it.
Interviewer
But first keys, second keys,
unlocking the ability inside you: you have to admit the terminology is more
religious than scientific.
Shawn
Well, the movement is part
faith, part science. It’s a potent combination.
(scene change: NTAC medical
facility; four 4400s wait in the waiting room)
Roger
[disappeared March 6, 1987] (to
older woman) So, what time was your appointment for?
Sara
[disappeared November 5, 1971]
They told me eleven-fifteen. But, they are always telling me
eleven-fifteen. I never get in before twelve, twelve-thirty.
Laurel
[disappeared January 7, 1982]
Hey. Free health care. All right? So what if they’re so slow.
Sara
(pointedly) Compulsory free
health care. You don’t show up for a quarterly check up, you get the goon
squad knocking at your door.
Kim
[disappeared February 2, 1992]
You don’t like it; don’t show. Don’t think they’d slap the cuffs on
someone’s grandma.
(scene change: in a doctor’s
office)
Hudson
(to Maia) Does it itch at all?
(Maia shakes her head; he removes the thermometer) Well, a
hundred-three-point-one. No wonder you wanted to stay in bed.
Diana
Is it some kind of flu?
Hudson
Most likely. Is it okay if we
keep her here for a few hours?
Maia
(mumbling) I want to go home.
Diana
I know you do, Honey. But
Doctor Hudson is gonna take very good care of you, and I’ll look in on you as
often as I can.
Maia
I wish I had brought my Lemon.
Diana
(to Hudson) That’s her stuffed
dog.
Hudson
Let me guess: he’s yellow.
Diana
(laughs) Yeah. Well, I could
go back and get him.
Hudson
(to Maia) You have a very nice
mommy.
Diana
I try. You know, this rash, I
worked at the CDC for seven years, and I never saw anything like it.
Hudson
It is kind of a weird shape,
huh?
Diana
Huh-huh.
Hudson
Don’t read too much into it. It
could still be hives, allergic reaction—we’ll take care of it. (he leaves)
Diana
(to Maia) So, will you be okay
here? I’ll go get Lemon. Good-bye, my Darling. (she kisses Maia) Bye-bye,
Darling.
(scene change: 4400 Center;
Richard’s apartment)
Richard
When Daddy’s away, he misses
Isabelle so much. The traveling round the country, talking also to people
who call in about my life: it’s kind of fun. Huh?
Lily
(entering) Shawn’s amazing.
This woman comes in; CAT scan says she’s got a brain tumor the size of a
walnut. Twenty minutes later, she’s on her way, as good as new.
Richard
Hmm.
Lily
I’ll feed her.
Richard
She’s not hungry yet.
Lily
How you know?
Richard
(proudly) She told me before
you came in.
Lily
So, she’s—
Richard
Talking to me. Communicating.
Same as she does with you.
Lily
(upset) Since when?
Richard
This morning. (sees Lily is not
pleased) Thought you’d be happy. First time she’s ever said anything to me.
Lily
That’s great. It’s just—uh—she
doesn’t say anything to me for weeks.
Richard
I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s
just how you used to tell me. Kids always alternate between parents. It’s
normal. Just, Isabelle comes with a twist.
(scene change: NTAC)
Nina
(briefing her staff) This is
Major Charles Culp, the National Security Agency’s Field Enforcement
Division. DC has loaned us his services. Effectively immediately, the Major
and his team will be providing backup in any 4400 cases requiring armed
intervention.
Culp
We know this office bears a
heavy caseload, and we’re here to help when needed.
Tom
Welcome aboard. I hope you guys
are up to it, because I’m gonna have you on speed dial.
Culp
We’ll stay out of your way; let
you do your jobs. When the time comes, we hope you’ll return the favor.
Garrity
Well, the last lady we went up
against released poison spores from her palms; so—uh—if you want to track her
down instead of me—
Park
By all means.
Culp
My men and I are used to unique
challenges.
Garrity
(later) How long have we been
asking for tactical support?
Tom
Eight months.
Diana
I guess someone up there likes
us.
Tom
You guys check your E-mails this
morning?
Garrity
“Happy birthday, Jordan
Collier.” Everyone in the building got that one.
Tom
Maybe Marco should have one of
his guys try to backtrack it.
Diana
Well, they already did. It came
from a public terminal in an Internet Café. It was a new E-mail account.
Park
Nice to know Collier’s still got
his fans.
Diana
(seeing a bottle of pills in
Tom’s hand) What’s that?
Tom
It’s valerian root or
something. I don’t know. Alana swears by it. To calm me down a little.
Diana
My suggestion: double your
dosage. Baldwin’s trigger’s been a little hair lately.
Tom
Yeah. My girlfriend agrees with
you.
Diana
I need you to cover for me for
an hour. Maia’s got the flu or something, and Hudson wants her to spend the
day here.
Tom
Is she okay?
Diana
I’m sure it’s nothing. I mean,
I was sure that it was the bubonic plague, but her doctor tells me that it’s
nothing. (she exits
(scene change: on the university
campus; Kyle and Danny sit and talk on a bench)
Danny
So, you plowed into some guy,
and you got away with it.
Kyle
Well, that’s kind of a weird way
of putting it.
Danny
Well, it perks having a dad at
NTAC.
Kyle
I guess.
Danny
This guy you hit: how messed up
was he?
Kyle
I really can’t talk about it.
You know: it’s lawyer stuff.
Danny
Whom am I gonna tell?
Kyle
I broke both of his legs and his
collarbone.
Danny
That’s it?
Kyle
He was in a car, Danny. It’s
not like I run over a pedestrian.
Danny
Yeah. But you kept talking
about this awful thing you did. I thought you killed somebody.
Kyle
(laughs) What? Thanks a lot,
man.
Danny
So did Shawn.
Kyle
(looking away) Well, I’m sorry
to disappoint you guys.
Danny
Well, look. Do me a favor,
okay? If you get into trouble again, tell somebody. There’s nothing you
can’t tell me or Shawn that we can’t handle.
Kyle
Next time I black out and have a
car accident, you’ll be the first to know.
Danny
As long as I’m not riding as
your shotgun. Oh, hey, listen. You want to go see Arcade Five with me on
Friday night? Or—uh—you want to stay home and nurse your guilty conscience?
Kyle
No nurse. I’ll go.
Danny
Yeah?
Kyle
I’ll go.
Danny
All right!
Kyle
Yeah.
Danny
It’s good to have you back.
Kyle
It’s good to be back.
Danny
(extending his hand) I gotta
go.
Kyle
All right.
Danny
See ya. (he leaves)
(scene change: NTAC; Kim is
listening to music; a high-pitched tone is heard; only Kim does not seem to
be affected)
Roger
(to the other 4400s) You hear
that? The buzz? What is that?
Kim
What?
Roger
That coming from your gadget?
Kim
Is what coming from my “gadget”?
Roger
That noise!
Kim
I don’t hear anything.
Laurel
Neither do I.
Agent
(throughout NTAC, all of the men
are affected by the noise) I’m sorry. I’m gonna have to call you back.
Park
(Tom seems not to be greatly
affected) What’s that noise? You hear that? What is going on? Feels like
a headache. (while others complain, Tom receives a new E-mail: “Did you hear
that?; a gift from me to you. Have fun trying to survive the day.”)
Garrity
Why is my signature on this
report? (Tom begins to investigate the office)
Park
‘Cause I had to get it in!
Garrity
Do not sign my name on another
report again.
Park
It sat on your desk for weeks!
Garrity
If there’s a space for my
signature, it should be my—(he pushes Park)—signature. (all of the men begin
to brawl)
Nina
(approaching; to Tom) Chester
and McClenahan are tearing each other apart in the elevator.
Tom
Uh, that just started. There
was a noise.
Nina
What? I didn’t hear anything.
Tom
Yeah, well, the rest of us did.
Maybe it was just some kind of high-pitched whine. And, I got another one of
those E-mails. It said: “Have fun trying to survive the day.”
Nina
Show me. (to the office staff)
Will everybody try to stay calm. If this noise or signal did something to
you, you got to fight it. (the fighting resumes) What did I just tell you?
(Park shoots her)
Tom
Nina!
Park
You saw it: she pulled her
weapon first. I was defending myself. (Tom punches Park)
Agent
Leave him alone!
Tom
(to a female agent) How is she?
Woman
Breathing. She’s bleeding
pretty bad.
Tom
Get her to Medical. Park is
under arrest. (grabs an agent) Folley, restrain him. (he moves to a
computer)
Garrity
Baldwin, what are you doing?
Tom
Doing? I want to know what’s
going on. Nobody gets in, and nobody goes out. (he locks down NTAC)
Agent
What’s going on?
Computer
Security procedure enabled.
(scene change: 4400 Center day
care)
Ruth
Who is a very good girl?
Isabelle is! Isabelle is a smarty!
Lily
(entering) I’m glad to see you
guys are having fun.
Ruth
Lily! I didn’t expect to see
you till five.
Lily
Well, I’m taking an early
lunch. I thought I’d take Isabelle to the garden.
Ruth
That sounds fun. Doesn’t it,
little girl?
Lily
(picking up some discarded flash
cards from off the floor) Oh, these flashcards were here all the time.
Let’s see if I can find an apple. It’s her favorite. (she finds Rorschach
cards mixed in between) What is this?
Ruth
Someone’s been mixing up our
cards. I’ve told them a million times.
Lily
What do you use these for?
Ruth
(evasive) These don’t belong in
the nursery. I think they use them for the applicants, a part of their psych
profile. Sorry. Okay, Isabelle. (she releases Isabelle from her chair)
Gonna go with Mommy. Okay. (she hands Isabelle to Lily) See you real
soon. (Lily leaves with a lot of concern)
(scene change: 4400 Center;
Shawn and Matthew watch Shawn’s latest interview in his office)
Shawn
Well, the movement is part
faith, part science. It’s a potent combination.
Interviewer
The movement’s one hundred
thousand members would certainly agree, but Kevin Burkhoff, a neuro-scientist
at Western Washington University thinks otherwise.
Kevin
I don’t question anyone’s
faith. Why should I? Faith is a good thing, right? But what they are doing
over there at the Center has nothing to do with science. I mean, you tell me
how fasting, meditation, and chanting can alter in any way your neuro
chemistry. It’s preposterous. It’s a good scam, but still preposterous.
Interviewer
Scam? That’s a strong word.
Kevin
It fits. They are taking this
kernel of truth about the brain’s potential and using it to bilk people out
of their life’s savings.
Interviewer
A lot of people might be
surprised by your stance. After all, you suffered from paranoid personality
disorder for years. Wasn’t it a device engineered by a 4400 that cured you?
Kevin
Yes. And, I’m grateful. But
you need to make the distinction between the 4400 and the 4400 Center. 4400s
have remarkable abilities. Everybody knows it. But the Center is co-opting
that phenomenon for profit. Those machines that they are hooking everybody
up to over there: they might as well not even be plugged in.
Matthew
(turning off the television) If
you ask me, Kevin is rather demented.
Shawn
He seemed pretty sane to me,
Matthew, especially when he was ripping—
Matthew
Shawn, don’t overreact. It’s
just one interview. (he pats Shawn on the shoulder) You did good, though.
Shawn
(unconvinced) Yeah.
(scene change: NTAC)
Tom
Garrity, give me the gun.
(Garrity complies; he strips the weapon and adds it to a pile of weapons on a
table)
Garrity
Look. This is crazy Baldwin.
How are we gonna defend ourselves?
Tom
Whoever is doing this wants us
to attack each other. We stay armed; we are dead by the end of the day.
Garrity
If we don’t, we’ll be
slaughtered. Look. Everyone in the building is under the effects of this
thing. Okay? The cafeteria staff could be forming an army right now.
Tom
That’s right. Which is why I am
going to find out who’s doing this and stop it. They’re doing checkups in
the medical lab today. That means there are 4400s in the building,
Garrity
You think one of them’s behind it?
Tom
(trying to control himself) I
don’t know. But right now it’s all I have to go on.
Garrity
(challenging) You? Who put you
in command?
Culp
(entering) He’s not. I am.
This building is the target of a 4400 terrorist attack. This is now a military
situation.
Garrity
This is great, Baldwin. Hmm?
Why don’t you explain to these guys why they should just lay down their arms,
huh?
Tom
Major Culp, this signal—whatever
it is—it’s like someone set off a rage-bomb. It’s pumping up the aggression
of everybody in the building. The men, anyway. We cannot be walking around
with loaded firearms.
Culp
My team’s trained to resist
psychological pressure tactics.
Tom
This is a 4400 ability. You
can’t resist it.
Park
There’s 4400s down in the med
lab. It’s probably one of them doing it.
Garrity
Baldwin was just heading down
there right now.
Culp
Cartwright, watch them.
Everyone else with me.
Tom
Just wait! What are you going
to do?
Culp
I’m gonna find out which one of
them is responsible for this.
Tom
And then what?
Culp
I’m gonna make sure that it
stops.
Tom
Be careful. There’s a little
girl down there.
Culp
If it’s not her, then she has
nothing to worry about.
(scene change: in the medical
lab)
Roger
(Laurel has tied him up) You
have to let me out! We have to get out! We’re gonna get killed!
Kim
Will you just stop saying that
already! (she and Sara push a desk towards the door) It’s not helping.
(scene change: on the university
campus)
Kyle
(looking at a “A” on his paper
jointly produced with Molly, Dwight, and Iris) An “A”: that’s great! What’s
my name doing on here?
Molly
Well, we’re lab partners,
right? This is our presentation.
Kyle
But I haven’t met with you in
almost three weeks. I didn’t type a word of this.
Molly
It’s not like you didn’t do
anything. You said you wanted to do a paper on mitosis; you stained the
slides.
Kyle
Well, one or two of them, maybe.
Molly
Look. You were in trouble,
right? I just figured that whatever it was, you could do without an
incomplete in Bio.
Kyle
I just don’t know if I deserve
this, but thank you.
Molly
What can I say? I have a soft
spot for stray cats.
Kyle
I look that pathetic?
Molly
(laughs) Hardly.
(scene change: in a hospital
ward; Nina is lying in bed, bandaged; Hudson is shooting himself up)
Nina
(to Hudson) You’re shooting
up? Doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.
Hudson
It’s a sedative. If I lose
control—become like everyone else in this place—I can’t help you anymore.
Nina
What’s happening to my agents?
I don’t feel any different, but they are all going crazy.
Maia
Doctor Hudson, I feel worse.
Hudson
You shouldn’t be out of bed.
Nina
Sweetie, what’s that on your
arm? (Hudson examines Maia’s arm and notices that the rash has become worse)
(scene change: outside NTAC;
Diana arrives)
Diana
(to a guard, showing her badge)
Skouris. NTAC. I need to get past.
Guard
Building’s locked down.
Diana
What’s going on?
Guard
Security breach from the
inside. That’s all we know.
Diana
I have to get through.
Guard
It’s not gonna happen.
Diana
You don’t understand. My
daughter is in there.
(scene change: NTAC, the main
operation room; Thursday, July 28, 3:19 pm; all the male agents except Tom
are tied up)
Tom
(to Cartwright) Well, I can’t
do myself.
Cartwright
(withdrawing his weapon and
taking the plastic handcuffs from Tom) Turn around. (Tom turns around; he
reholsters his weapon; Tom’s cell phone rings; Tom moves to answer it) Hold
still! (Tom surrenders his cell phone to him; he drops it onto the floor and
steps on it; Diana is frustrated at not being able to get through)
Brady
(in the Theory Room) I can’t
believe you broke my nose.
Paul
Yeah. Well, you broke my
knuckle when I hit you.
Brady
But I’m still right. The signal
is constant, and it doesn’t matter if you can hear it or not. It’s like a
dog whistle.
Paul
It’s one pulse, and it will wear
off. We just have to wait it out!
Marco
(throwing a glass beaker at him,
which bounces off one of the large TV screens) Both of you guys, shut up!
I’m trying to get work done. (his cell phone rings) Not a good time, Diana.
Diana
Marco, what’s going on in there?
Marco
It depends on who you ask!
Somebody has definitely set off a whammy in here. Something’s pumping up our
flight or fight instinct.
Brady
All the emphasis on the fight
part.
Diana
Marco, I need to get inside, and
I need your help.
Marco
Every male in this building has
a gallon of adrenaline coursing through his veins right now. And, most of
them are armed. If you’re on the outside, stay there.
Diana
Listen to me, Marco. Maia is
inside, and I need to get to her. Do you have access to the building’s
schematics?
Marco
(sighs) Uh, yeah. I can pull
them up.
Diana
Then do it.
Marco
And, what do I get in return?
Diana
Well, we can talk about that
later.
Marco
Good. Good. I’m gonna hold you
to that.
Paul
You’re in my space!
Marco
Hold on.
Paul
You’re in my space!
Marco
(shouting) Guys! Settle it
later! We gotta get Skouris into the building.
(scene change: NTAC operations)
Cartwright
(holding his weapon on Tom) I
said get on your knees!
Tom
I just need to take these
because they are keeping me calm.
Cartwright
Little late for that!
Tom
You sure you don’t want one?
They might help. (Tom subdues Cartwright)
Garrity
Cut us loose; come on.
Agent
Cut me free. Cut me free.
Tom
(uncuffing Garrity) Get some
cuffs. Put them on commando-boy. You can let everyone else go.
Garrity
Hey, hey! Where are you going?
Tom
I’m going to the med labs.
Hopefully the Major met some resistance along the way. (he takes
Cartwright’s weapon and leaves)
(scene change: Richard’s
apartment)
Richard
(to Lily) What kind of tests?
You mean like an IQ thing?
Lily
I don’t know, Richard. You
know, those flashcards were kind of weird. And, after we got back, I was
changing her; she’s got these marks on her skin.
Richard
Marks? Bruises?
Lily
No. Like irritations. I saw
her hooked up to something.
Richard
Let me see.
Lily
They faded. Richard, don’t look
at me like that. I’m not imagining things. She’s not going back to that
nursery.
Richard
Lily. All you been talking
about is how much you love Ruth, and—and—the nursery, and how much Isabelle
seems to love it there.
Lily
I wish you had been there. I
mean, Ruth had this weird smile on her face.
Richard
Think about what you’re saying.
Nobody’s doing tests on Isabelle at the nursery. I know you feel like she’s
shutting you out and—no offense—but maybe this is an over-reaction. Can I
take her for a second?
Lily
No! (she turns away)
Richard
Lily. What are you doing?
Lily
I’m sorry. It’s just this
place: I feel it is changing everything. It’s like it’s changing us. (she
hands Isabelle to Richard)
Richard
We’re okay. Everything’s okay.
Hmm?
(scene change: outside the 4400
Center)
Matthew
The meditation courses, the
synaptic potential readers, and our purification seminar: that’s half our
curriculum you’re putting on the chopping block.
Shawn
We don’t need them, Matthew.
Matthew
Jordan seemed to think that we
did.
Shawn
Jordan’s not here anymore, is
he? Besides, that Burkhoff guy’s right. A bunch of chanting is not going to
unlock the 4400 inside of anyone.
Matthew
Whether it will or won’t, the
product is selling.
Shawn
(stutters) The product? This
is not a pyramid scheme, Matthew. People are coming here; they are looking
to be changed. They are looking for answers.
Matthew
And, we’ll find them. But if we
change, we look weak. For now, all that matters is that people believe in
what we are doing.
Shawn
I need to believe in it, too.
(he walks away, leaving a disconcerted Matthew)
(scene change: NTAC hallways;
Culp and his men look for people to kill)^
Culp
(breaking into one of the
medical lab rooms) Nobody move!
Roger
(still tied to a chair) They’re
gone. They all took off.
Culp
Who are you?
Roger
Roger Wolcott. I’m just here
for my checkup.
Culp
You’re a 4400?
Roger
Why else would I be here?
(shouting) Now, cut me loose! (Culp kills him)
(scene change: in another
hallway; Thursday, July 28, 4:22 pm; Tom is cautiously making his way to the
medical labs; he finds Roger; meanwhile, Diana is barricading her ward)
Nina
That’s not going to hold
anybody.
Diana
Not for long. Let’s hope no one
finds us here.
Kim
What do you think our chances
are?
Diana
The calmer we are, the longer we
stay alive. (to Maia) How’re you doing, Sweetie.
Maia
I don’t feel well. [garbled]
It’s getting hard to breathe.
Diana
Oh, Baby. I have something for
you. (she hands her the stuffed dog)
Maia
Lemon.
Diana
As soon as this is over, I’m
gonna get you to the hospital, okay? (Maia nods) All right.
Nina
I’m guessing you don’t have a
stuffed animal for me. Maybe a fifth of Jack Daniel’s?
Diana
Sorry.
Hudson
(looking at Nina’s wound) Looks
like it’s starting to clot. Need another shot for pain?
Nina
No. You need the sedatives more
than I do.
Diana
How many shots have you taken?
Hudson
Three.
Diana
What? You’re still on your
feet? Shouldn’t that have knocked you on your ass by now?
Hudson
Well, on a normal day I’d be off
for the next twelve hours. But today, it’s barely enough to keep me sane.
Diana
Well, thank you for keeping Maia
safe.
Hudson
She’s a sweet kid. (shots are
heard) Listen. Uh, Diana. Look. I’ve only got three shots left. They’re
wearing off a little faster each time. I don’t want to hurt anybody. I
don’t want to kill anybody. So, if I start to go—
Diana
Oh, don’t worry. I’ll take care
of you.
Hudson
Do me a favor: back of the
head. Okay?
Diana
You’ll never see it coming.
Well, listen, Hudson.
Hudson
Look. I just gave you
permission to blow my head off. Why don’t you call me Max?
Diana
All right, Max. About this
signal, which one of these bitches do you think is sending it?
(scene change: in the university
pub)
Molly
(keeping her eyes closed) I
don’t see what this has to do with anything.
Kyle
Hey. You want to know my story?
All right. Now you’re living it. Open your eyes. Now, imagine three years
went by while you had them shut.
Molly
Can’t do it.
Kyle
Neither could I. But they were
gone. I’m missing a year of high school, which is supposedly the best year
ever. I got robbed; the rest of high school just sucked.
Molly
So, this blackout that you had
behind the wheel: that was some sort of—uh—after effect of the coma?
Kyle
Yeah.
Molly
Well, guy, you have been through
so much.
Kyle
You’re jealous? What part
sounds good? The coma? The hit-and-run?
Molly
I’m jealous because you have all
this experience under your belt. Makes you interesting.
(scene change: in a medical lab;
Diana has tied up Sara and Kim)
Sara
But I didn’t do it. It wasn’t
me.
Kim
(as Hudson administers a
sedative) Great. So now someone can kill me in my sleep? How do you know
it is one of us?
Diana
Well, I don’t. But none of you
are talking, and I have run out of options.
Kim
This isn’t going to make a damn
bit of difference.
Hudson
Well, that’s it. No more
sedatives.
Diana
Can you still function as a
doctor?
Hudson
For now.
(scene change: Theory Room;
Marco has tied up his co-workers)
Marco
(answering his cell phone) Kind
of busy here, Diana!
Diana
We just put the 4400s under, but
we’re not sure if that has killed the signal. Do you still feel amped-up?
Marco
Yes, I do. Okay? I’m working
it from my end.
Diana
(as Culp and his men approach)
What’s that noise?
Marco
I’m trying to counter the
effects of the signal. If you just shut up for a second, maybe I can find
the right frequency.
Diana
Okay. Calm down, Marco. I need
you to do this.
Marco
Hmm. Always has to be me,
doesn’t it? Huh? Ol’ reliable Marco: does whatever you want.
(scene change: outside the ward,
Culp and another agent try to break in; Tom shoots Culp; out of bullets, Tom
attacks and subdues the other agent; Culp gets up and fights Tom)
(scene change: in Dr. Burkhoff’s
lab)
Shawn
(to Kevin) I truly believe in
what we are trying to do. The 4400 are the template for the next stage in
the human evolution.
Kevin
You mind backing up? You’re
standing a little close. (Shawn backs up across the room)
Shawn
We can recreate the technology
that was used to change us.
Kevin
Not by chanting “Oom” three
times you can’t.
Shawn
Agreed. But if you come to work
with us, we could get somewhere.
Kevin
You know, the government has
approached me a half a dozen times. They seem to have this bizarre theory
I’m the father of this new branch of science. I turned them down. I don’t
like working with people with badges.
Shawn
Um, listen. You can’t blame
them for being curious. You were in a mental hospital for six years. The
future busted its ass to get you working again.
Kevin
I haven’t forgotten my debt.
Shawn
And besides, the government
cannot offer you what I can.
Kevin
Oh? What’s that? A signing
bonus? A fancy car?
Shawn
Me. I’m the poster boy, right?
Healing hands. Unlimited access. (he moves closer and touches Kevin on the
shoulders) Can you really turn that down?
(scene change: Tom is breaking
down the barrier to the medical lab)
Maia
Mommy, I’m really scared.
Diana
I know, Baby. I’m scared, too.
But it’s gonna be okay, ‘cause Mommy’s here. Okay? (she readies her
weapon) Whatever is coming through that door, I’ll protect you. (Tom
finally bursts through the door; she and Tom level their weapons at each
other’s faces) Tom! Tom, put the gun down. It’s me. It’s Diana.
Tom
No. You’ll shoot me if I put it
down.
Diana
No, Tom. I don’t want to hurt
you.
Tom
Well, I’m gonna hurt you,
Diana. (Hudson knocks him down)
Diana
Tom, I said calm down. (she
cold-cocks him with her pistol; to Hudson) My Mom always wanted me to hit it
off with a cute doctor, but you make another move, and I will pull this
trigger.
Nina
(another sound is heard through
the speakers) What is that?
Diana
Maybe Marco earned his
paycheck. (Hudson visibly calms down; she lowers her weapon)
(scene change: 4400 Center; Lily
and Richard walk Isabelle toward the Day Care Facility)
Lily
I feel like an idiot. It’s
just, Isabelle and I were so close for so long.
Richard
And, you still are.
Lily
And now it’s like you say: she
is a baby; it isn’t personal.
Richard
You just have to remember that.
(to Ruth) Hey, Ruth. Look who’s back?
Ruth
Oh! That was a long lunch.
Lily
Yeah. I’m sorry. Time got away
from us. (she picks up Isabelle) Come on, you. Here you are. (to Ruth)
We’ll be back in an hour for her.
Ruth
We’ll be here.
Lily
Thank you.
Richard
Bye, Isabelle.
Lily
Bye.
Ruth
(to Isabelle) Come on. Yeah!
Lily
I’d still like to do a little
house hunting.
Richard
We could take a look around.
See what’s out there. (he turns and looks at Isabelle, concern on his face)
(scene change: outside NTAC;
ambulances load up)
Nina
(to Tom) You’re in charge until
I am released. For whatever manpower is still up walking, start picking up
the pieces.
Tom
I’ll
handle it.
Nina
All
right. And, you get that head looked at. (she disappears into an ambulance)
Diana
(approaching)
How are you doing?
Tom
Well,
for a slender lady, you pack a punch.
Diana
Well,
I can’t take all the credit. Culp softened you up a little bit. (she hands
him a sheet of paper) This is the final tally.
Tom
Three
agents dead, two NSA operatives, a 4400. Concussions, broken bones, stab
wounds. Yikes!
Diana
It’s
tough to swallow. This was a major attack, and we weren’t ready.
Tom
Yeah.
Diana
(Maia
is wheeled up, pushed by Dr. Hudson) How are you, Baby? You okay?
Maia
Not
so good.
Hudson
I
got her on glucose and erythromycin. I’m gonna get her over to St. Michaels
and see if we can bring that fever down.
Diana
(taking
over the wheelchair) For the rash?
Hudson
I’m
gonna bring in a specialist.
Diana
Should
I be worried?
Hudson
Brett
Kellerman is one of the best dermatologists in the city. I’m sure he’ll
figure it out.
Maia
You’re
coming with us, right?
Diana
Of
course. I’ll be right there in the ambulance with you. (she kisses Maia on
the forehead)
Hudson
All
right. I’ll get to the hospital as soon as I can.
Diana
Okay.
Oh, Max.
Hudson
Yeah.
Diana
Thank
you for everything.
Hudson
Yeah.
Thank you for not putting one in the back of my head.
Marco
(to
Tom) As to those 4400 Diana was protecting, they’re not going to see any
daylight until NTAC is sure they’re not responsible for this.
Tom
It’s
going to be a marathon debriefing session.
Marco
Yeah.
I bet you they’re both gonna be up all night.
Tom
Both?
I thought Diana said there was three of them. (he runs over to the ambulance
where Laurel and Sara wait)
Marco
Tom?
Tom
She’s
gone. A 4400 nearly took down a fortified government and walked away without
breaking a sweat.
Marco
Do
they have a name for that?
Tom
Yeah.
Terrorism.
(scene
change: Kim walks down a street and sends an E-mail message on her cell
phone: “Payback is a bitch.”; she throws the phone away)
(scene
change: 4400 Center; Kevin enters)
Receptionist
Welcome
to the Center. Would you like to sign up for a tour?
Kevin
No.
Tell Shawn Farrell that Kevin Burkhoff is here to see him.
Receptionist
I’m
sorry. Mr. Farrell is busy at the moment. Is there a message I can pass
along?
Kevin
Yes.
I want to get started immediately.
(scene
change: in Molly’s bedroom; Kyle and Molly are in bed together)
Molly
You
can stay over if you like. Eat some dinner. Do a little studying. Kyle?
Are you okay?
Kyle
I
don’t deserve you.
Molly
That’s
so sweet. (they kiss) I’ll be right back.
Kyle
Okay.
(he watches her get out of bed)
(scene
change: 4400 Center; Shawn’s office)
Lily
(escorting
Olivia) Shawn, this is Olivia Cohen. (to Olivia) Take a seat, hmmm.
That’s good. Yeah. (to Shawn) She lost her eyesight to ocular degeneration
ten years ago. The foundation was very moved by her story.
Shawn
(takes
off his jacket) Hi, Mrs. Cohen.
Olivia
Hello.
Shawn
It’s
nice to meet you. So—uh—what we are going to do here is going to feel a
little weird, but—um—when we are done, you’ll be able to see again.
Olivia
Well,
I can’t wait. I have to admit I’m a little nervous.
Shawn
You
don’t have to be. I’m gonna take your hands now. Okay?
Olivia
Hmm-hmm.
Shawn
Okay.
(he takes her hands into his own) There we go. Here we go. (he
concentrates but nothing happens; he has lost the ability to heal)
Olivia
So,
when is it supposed to start?
Shawn
Just
give me a moment. (he looks at Lily and falls down)
Lily
Shawn!
What’s wrong?
Shawn
(in
pain) I don’t know. Is it warm in here? (he rolls up his right sleeve and
sees the same rash as Maia’s)
(to
be continued)
