: I’m just conjecturing from past
experience Mr. President. I have no concrete information. Let me look into it. PALMER: You do
that.
[Stanton exits.
Palmer looks at him suspiciously. Sheri spots Stanton leaving. Palmer
approaches Mike and Sheri.]
PALMER: Jack
Bauer’s plane was shot down by an American military unit. Jack told me himself.
I won’t go into details, except to say that I believe him.
MIKE: American
military?! Why?
PALMER: I just
spoke to Roger Stanton. I think he’s hiding something from me. I’m going to
arrest him.
SHERI PALMER:
Arrest the head of NSA?
PALMER: Bauer said
the unit that attacked his plane is connected to a Colonel Samuels out of Fort Benning. Samuels is funded by NSA.
SHERI: With all
due respect David, that’s pretty thin.
PALMER: By itself
yes. But the ambassador’s chopper crash, the evacuation of military personnel
out of LA, Ron Wieland’s escape from custody, those things happened after Stanton arrived.
SHERI: Firing Stanton would cause chaos. All the agencies report through him. He’s running the search
for the bomb for crying out loud.
MIKE: If the
President’s right, he’s not running the search, he’s impeding it.
SHERI: Why would
he do such a thing?
MIKE: I don’t
know. But if he is, we have a better chance of finding the bomb if we get rid
of him.
SHERI: David. You
can’t do this on a hunch. If Stanton turns out to be innocent, and that bomb
goes off, you’ll be blamed for the deaths of a million people.
MIKE: If you do
nothing and he is guilty of something, you’ll be blamed anyway.
SHERI: No, no, no.
At the very least, we need to get some kind of proof, some evidence. You cannot
just arrest the head of NSA, David.
PALMER: Sheri’s
right Mike. We need proof. Find me a connection between Stanton and this
Colonel Samuels. And find it quickly.
[Mike nods and
exits. Sheri stares at Palmer.]

DISPATCHER(RADIO):
LA County 470, go ahead.
COP(RADIO): Yeah
this is Officer Brown with Valley. I’m trying to reach Detective Bill Gucoff.
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
Brown. You’re transporting two suspects down to Central?
BROWN(RADIO):
Mmhm. That’s right.
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
Hold on, I’ll patch you through.
GUCOFF(RADIO):
Gucoff here.
BROWN(RADIO): Hey
Bill.
GUCOFF(RADIO):
Yeah?
BROWN(RADIO): Hey listen,
I’m bringing the prisoners down.
GUCOFF(RADIO):
Alright. You got everything under control?
BROWN(RADIO): The
guy gave us a little bit of trouble…
[Miguel leans
forwards, one of his hands holding the lighter and looks at Kim.]
KIM: What?
MIGUEL: Get the
bandanna out of my pocket.
KIM: Why?
MIGUEL: To start a
fire.
KIM: What? You’re
crazy.
MIGUEL: He’ll have
to pull over and stop the car.
KIM: And then
he’ll put it out. Then what?
MIGUEL: I don’t
know. Maybe… Maybe it’ll do enough damage and we’ll have to go back to the
station. It’ll buy us time.
KIM: This is
crazy.
MIGUEL: Crazier
than going to Los Angeles where a nuclear bomb might go off any minute?
BROWN(RADIO): Hey
listen uh.. this might sound a little crazy, but did you happen to hear anything
about some kind of a bomb threat today?
GUCOFF(RADIO):
What?
MIGUEL: Ugh.. I
can’t do this. You gotta do it.
KIM: No.
MIGUEL: Why can’t
you do it Kim. You’re smaller.
GUCOFF(RADIO): No
I haven’t heard anything.
BROWN(RADIO): You
sure?
MIGUEL: Come on.
GUCOFF(RADIO):
Why? Somebody tell you there was a bomb or something? What’s going on? You know
something that I don’t? What’s up?
BROWN(RADIO): I
don’t know, it may be nothing, but one of the kids here, apparently her father
works for CTU.
[The lid of the
lighter clicks. Officer Brown turns around to look at the kids to investigate
the noise but found nothing unusual.]
BROWN(RADIO): He
gave her some kind of information about a bomb or something. Just check it out
for me. Like I said, it’s probably nothing, but…
GUCOFF(RADIO):
Okay.
BROWN(RADIO): Okay
Gucoff, I owe you one.
[Kim successfully
set the handkerchief alight. Kim stuffs it through the metal wiring that
separates the cop from the prisoner compartment. Officer tries to put out the
fire while the SUV is still moving. They run off the pavement and down the
hill, out of control.]
---
05:23:43.. 44..
45.. **Fades out.**
05:27:55.. 56..
57.. 58.. 59..
---
[Kim climbs out
from above the wreckage of the car crash to the cop’s side of the car. She
takes the keys from the officer’s belt and un-cuffs herself.]
MIGUEL: Kim!
KIM: Hang on okay?
[Kim takes the
officer’s radio.]
KIM(RADIO): Hello.
Can anyone hear me?
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
This is CHP Station Six. Come in.
MIGUEL: Kim, Kim!
Don’t!
KIM(RADIO): We’re
on San Fernando, the 118. There’s been an accident. We need an ambulance. Right
away.
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
How’s the officer?
KIM(RADIO): He’s
hurt badly. So is someone else.
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
Two injured?
KIM(RADIO): Yes.
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
Alright. Stay there. We’re getting someone there now.
KIM: Hang on!
DISPATCHER(RADIO):
All units. All units proceed to San Fernando at 118. MVA, officer down. Officer
down.
[Miguel has had a
terrible nosebleed. Kim climbs out of the SUV again via the broken window. She
gets in the part where Miguel is trapped and laid there with her head next to
Miguel’s chest.]
---
MAN: I’m gonna ask
you just once more huh?
[Man is holding
Kate Warner’s earlobe, also with a glistening surgical knife in his hands.]
MAN: Who did you
tell?
KATE: Mmm. No one.
[Kate Warner
winces in pain as the man carefully cut a line on her earlobe.]
---
TOM BAKER: Here’s
an infrared of the house. Two people both in this room. We assume one is Ali.
But we’ll need to take them both alive.
JACK: Are your men
in position?
BAKER: Give them
90 seconds.
JACK: Good.
[Jack connects to
George Mason on the phone.]
MASON: Yeah?
JACK: George it’s
me.
MASON: Jack- Where
are you?
JACK: I’m on site.
Syed Ali’s in the house. We’re gonna be ready to move in, in about a minute.
We’d need auxiliary teams ready to move as soon as we find out the location of
this bomb.
MASON: Yeah. We’re
already working on it.
JACK: Yeah. I’ll
get back to you as soon as we get him.
[They hang up. We
can see that Mason’s tissue in which he just wiped his nose with is stained
with blood.]
JACK(RADIO): Agent
Baker?
BAKER(RADIO):
Baker here.
JACK: Let me know
as soon as your teams are ready.
BAKER(RADIO):
Roger that.
---
REZA: This is Bob
Warner’s access code. As you can see, he logged on roughly twice as often as I
did.
MACCABEE(OUTSIDE
THE DOOR): This is a restricted area, Ms. Warner.
MARIE (OUTSIDE THE
DOOR): I need to speak with Reza right now.
MACCABEE(OTD): I’m
afraid I can’t do that.
MARIE (OTD): Just
a minute, it’s our wedding day.
MACCABEE(OTD): I
realize that. We’re in the middle of an investigation.
MARIE (OTD): Can I
talk to him for one minute?
[Richards gets up,
annoyed and walks over to door and opens it.]
MARIE: Can I talk
to Reza for a minute?
MACCABEE: I tried
to explain.
RICHARDS: Make it
fast.
MARIE: Thank you.
[Marie comes in,
embraces Reza.]
REZA: Marie?
MARIE: Hey what I
said before, I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry, just this whole thing has been
such a shock.
REZA: No, no, no.
It’s alright.
MARIE: you are the
man I’m going to marry. I know, whatever you’re doing, you have to do it. I
love you. Whatever happens- happens.
REZA: My angel.
RICHARDS: We have
to get back to work.
[Marie kisses Reza
goodbye.]
RICHARDS: You can
wait in the next room if you’d like.
MARIE: Thank you.
[Marie exits. Agent
Maccabee closes the door.]
---
[The man picks up
a crimson towel and gently wiped Kate’s wound and neck clean of the blood. Kate
winces in pain.]
MAN: Awww. It’s
barely a nick. It’s not nearly as bad as it feels.
[Baker leads SWAT
team through the back following Jack. The man and Kate are still oblivious of
the raid.]
KATE: You don’t
have to kill me. Just leave me here. By the time someone finds me, you’ll be
100 miles away.
MAN: Something’s going to happen, very soon.
[The man takes out
a gun from a drawer. Jack holding his shotgun at ready, signals it’s clear to
Baker and his team, who followed.]
MAN: Something
terrible, which will cause much suffering. This will be easier.
[The man cocks the
gun. Kate gasps and shuts her eyes and the man positions himself directly
behind Kate, aiming his gun at her head. The man hears footsteps from above. He
can see a man’s shadow through the glass ceiling.]
MAN: Take cover!
[The man shot his
automatic weapon on the walls surrounding the room, letting his bullets rip
through the thin walls. Jack, Baker and his team leaps down just in time to
dodge the incoming bullets.]
JACK: Fall back!
Fall back!
MAN: I have a
woman! If you come any closer, I’ll kill the woman!
[The man points
his gun at the door with one hand, pulls the chair tied to Kate in the other
and retreats into a corner.]
JACK: Bring in the
shield now.
BAKER(RADIO): We
need the body bunker right away.
KATE: They don’t
negotiate. Yet they do shoot. It’s not you they want alive. It’s me.
JACK: I’ll try to
take him out with a beanbag hit.
[Jack signals to
man with shield. He follows the shield man to the door. Baker holds up his hand
to signal for his remaining men to wait. Jack nods the shield man and the
shield man kicks open the door. The man shoots at the shield man, but to no
avail. Jack dodges right from behind the shield man and takes out the enemy.
Kate gasps. Jack secures the man.]
JACK: Suspect is
secure. You’re alright. You’re alright. It’s alright. It’s alright. Just relax.
Take a breath.
[Baker runs in to
take custody of the man. Jack leads a gasping Kate Warner away.]
JACK: It’s over.
It’s over. Okay?
[Baker turns the
man over, to find him foaming at the mouth. Another CTU agent leads Kate away
to safety.]
BAKER: Jack, he’s
going into convulsions.
JACK: What? Did
you see him take anything?
BAKER: I was
watching him the whole time.
[Baker checks the
man.]
BAKER: Cyanide. He
must have had it in his mouth already.
JACK: we need a
medic in here now! We need a medic now!
MAN(RADIO): Copy
that!
[Baker furiously
tries to revive the man. Jack glances at Baker’s troubled face and stood up.]
JACK: Dammit! I
want him photographed, fingerprints, everything. I want it sent it over to CTU
for analysis. I want confirmation that that is Syed Ali.
[Jack punches the
door in frustration and exits.]
---
05:34:45.. 46..
47.. **Fades out.**
05:38:55.. 56..
57.. 58.. 59.. 00.. 01..

MIGUEL: You’ve
called them. You should go.
[Miguel couldn’t
move. Kim continues to lay by Miguel’s side.]
KIM: I’ll go when
they get here.
MIGUEL: It’ll be
too late. They’ll see you.
KIM: I’ll be fine.
[Kim cries.]
KIM: Thank you so
much… for everything. As soon as this is all over, I’m gonna find you okay? I
promise.
[Distant sounds of
sirens. Kim sits up.]
MIGUEL: Go.
[Kim leans over
and kisses Miguel. The sirens get louder. Kim clambers out of the SUV and runs
towards the woods away from the highway. She looks at the ambulance from behind
the tree. There’s a bunch of cops and medics running down to the wreckage.]
MEDIC: Notify
dispatch. 143. Move!
[Kim runs away.]
---
BAKER: Did you get
the area locked down?
AGENT: Yes sir.
[Kate is holding
her ear with a handkerchief. Jack Bauer approaches. Baker and another agent
talking in the distance.]
JACK: You should
drink some water.
[Jack offers Kate
water and Kate gratefully accepts. Jack takes off his jacket and drapes it
over Kate’s shivering frame.]
JACK: Kate, my
name is Jack Bauer. I’m a federal agent. I know you’ve been through a terrible
ordeal in there, but I’m afraid I’d have to ask you a few questions. Would that
be alright?
[Kate nods.]
JACK: How did you
get here?
KATE: Um... I was…
trying to help my sister. So I hired a private investigator. Those men thought
we knew something… But we didn’t know anything-
JACK: Slow. Slow
down, slow down. The dead man in the other room; that was a private
investigator?
KATE: Paul Koplin.
What they did to him…
JACK: They? There
was more than one man here? How many men were there?
KATE: Two. The
other one left before you came.
JACK: Did you get
his name?
KATE: Syed Ali.
JACK: Are you
sure? Can you describe him for me?
KATE: Tall. Thin.
JACK: Do you
remember what kind of clothes he was wearing?
KATE: A black
shirt. With… silver buttons down the front. Black pants.
JACK: Do you
remember what kind of a car he got into when he left? Do you know where he was
going?
[Kate shakes her
head to both questions. Jack takes out his radio.]
JACK: Excuse me
for one moment.
JACK(RADIO):
Baker, this is Agent Bauer. Syed Ali is still alive. We are looking for a
Middle Eastern man, wearing all black. I didn’t get a make on the car. Send out
a description and an APB. We need to find him. Now.
BAKER(RADIO):
Copy.
JACK: Kate? You
said you came here to help your sister; who is she?
KATE: Marie. Marie
Warner. She was supposed to get married today.
---
PALMER: Sheri,
tell Mike what you told me.
SHERI: There’s a
back-channel communications network that the CIA used to use, called OPCOM.
It’s been shut down for over 20 years. Last month, NSA was given orders to
resurrect it. It was an eyes-only order issued by Roger Stanton.
MIKE: I’m not sure
that’s enough.
PALMER: By itself,
it’s not. Unless Stanton used OPCOM to contact Colonel Samuels in the last few
hours.
SHERI: My source
is checking on that now.
PALMER: Mike, call
the Attorney General. Start working on this from the legal side. If we find
this connection, we’ll move on it, have Stanton arrested.
[Mike nods and
exits.]
---
JACK: I think we
got a positive ID on John Doe 1. I want you to cross-reference his prints with
the name Paul Koplin.
[Jack Bauer calls
CTU.]
WOMAN: CTU.
JACK: Yeah, it’s
Bauer, put me through to Tony.
TONY: Jack, it’s
Tony. What’s up?
JACK: I’m still at
the house. Look, I just through questioning the woman that Syed Ali was
torturing for information. Her name is Kate Warner. I want you to run a
background check.
TONY: Did you say
Kate Warner?
JACK: Yeah. Why?
TONY: I had her
family picked up this morning. I was with Kate Warner a few hours ago Jack.
JACK: What are you
talking about? What’s the connection?
TONY: A guy named Reza
Naiyeer, her sister’s fiancé, had dealings with Syed Ali. Of course he’s
denying it. He’s saying it was the father, Bob Warner. I had Richards take
Naiyeer over to Bob Warner’s office to try and hack into his computer. I have
Warner here with me right now. Jack, will Kate talk to you? ‘Cause her family’s
not cooperating.
JACK: Yeah, I
think so. But I gotta give her a little bit of time. She’s been through hell
here Tony; you should see this place.
TONY: Jack?
There’s one more thing.
JACK: What?
TONY: The father,
Bob Warner, he freelances for the CIA.
JACK: Okay. Look,
we’re gonna have to start from the beginning with this thing. You’ll have to
run everything again. Start connecting the dots. These people are involved;
somehow you gotta find out how. Now get back to me as soon as you got anything.
TONY: Alright, you
got it.
[They hang up.]
JACK: Gentlemen, I
need you to pack up. I need the room.
[Forensics
leaves.]
JACK(RADIO): Agent
Baker?
BAKER(RADIO):
Baker here.
JACK(RADIO): How
is Ms. Warner doing?
BAKER(RADIO): Not
so good.
JACK(RADIO): As
soon as you think she’s ready, I need you to bring her back down to the
bathroom.
BAKER(RADIO): Will
do. Baker out.
---
SHERI(PHONE):
Yeah. Those three dates and anything the following week. Hold on.
PALMER(PHONE):
Okay Good. Let me know as soon as you find something out. Thanks.
MIKE: Sir?
PALMER: What have
we got?
MIKE: I found a
way into the OPCOM channels.
PALMER: Good.
Tunnel in.
MIKE: Problem is,
the files are password protected. We’ll need someone internal to open them.
It’ll take time.
SHERI: Hold. No,
it’s not. I just got the name of a deputy director who’s retired, but his code
is still active. We could use that.
SHERI(PHONE): Uh
Jean, could you hold on for a sec? Uh-huh. Let’s see.
SHERI: Try this.
It should work.
SHERI(PHONE): I’m
back.
MIKE: I’ll head
over to the OC and check this out.
[Sheri scribbles
down something. She hands the paper to Mike. Mike exits.]
PALMER: Good.
SHERI(PHONE): Oh
that’s terrific. Jean, I’m gonna cross-reference these, but I need you to stay
in the office. ‘Cause I’m gonna need you there.
JEAN(PHONE): No
problem.
SHERI(PHONE):
Right. Okay. Thanks. Bye.
[Sheri hangs up.]
SHERI: I’m
collecting the dates that Colonel Samuel’s office logged onto OPCOM. If Mike
can trace Stanton’s access, we can look for a match.
PALMER: That’s
great.
SHERI: If we have
that, you’ll have all the proof we need.
PALMER: Wait a
minute. Stanton has a dozen staff who shares code. How are we gonna pin it on
him?
SHERI: There’s a
4-digit sub-code that only belongs to him. That’s the one that’ll nail him.
PALMER: Sheri?
SHERI: Yes?
PALMER: You’re
doing an incredible job here today.
SHERI: Thank you.
PALMER: I’ve
forgotten how talented you are at all this stuff.
SHERI: David I’ve
worked with you for over 25 years. It had to rub off on me somehow.
PALMER: I’m glad
you’re here.
SHERI: I’ve always
been here. You remember that?
PALMER: Yup.

40.. **Fade out.**
05:51:50.. 51..

---
MICHELLE(PHONE):
Alright, call me if there’s anything.
[Michelle hangs
up. Tony enters and sits down on the edge of Michelle’s desk.]
MICHELLE: That was
Barbara at the Warner office.
TONY: What’d they
find?
MICHELLE: Nothing
yet. They’re still going through the records, but Reza seems to be cooperating.
TONY: This is
driving me crazy. Just doesn’t make any sense that Syed Ali has a connection to
this white-bread family from Pasadena.
MICHELLE: So you
believe Bob Warner?
TONY: Well there’s
nothing in his profile or his behavior that suggests he’s involved with
terrorists.
MICHELLE: I agree,
but look at the facts. There is a paper trail between Warner Investments and
Ali. And Kate Warner was abducted for a reason.
TONY: I know. Alright
look uh… I want you to put together a list of all the managers and directors of
Bob Warner’s company. I want to widen the search a notch here.
MICHELLE: It’s a good
idea.
TONY: Anything
else?
MICHELLE: Yeah.
Uhm.. I was talking to Mason before and…
TONY: And?
MICHELLE: Look I
know this is hardly the time, but I don’t know how much time we have, so.. I
just wanted you to know that if you wanted to go out sometime…
TONY: Michelle…
MICHELLE: Look you
don’t have to say anything. I just wanted you to know how I felt.
TONY: No Michelle...
I feel the same way. I’ve just been keeping my distance because…
MICHELLE: Because
of what happened between you and Nina?
TONY: Yeah…
MICHELLE: So you
think I just want you for your information?
TONY: So uh… What
are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get
together for dinner and a movie? Is that it?
MICHELLE: I’ll get
that list.
TONY: Yeah… That’s…
[Tony exits.]
---
KATE: Syed Ali
left… After he killed Mr. Koplin. Talked for a minute or two. They looked at me
a couple of times. It was like… I wasn’t important anymore. They embraced… And
he left.
JACK: Did they say
anything to each other when he was leaving?
KATE: Yes, but
they spoke so softly… And mostly in Arabic.
JACK: Arabic. How
can you be so sure?
KATE: My family
lived in Saudi Arabia when I was younger. When my sister got engaged to Reza, I
picked it up again.
JACK: Can you
identify any words that they said? Anything at all?
KATE: Salat. They
said salat several times. It means prayer. But I couldn’t really hear anything.
They were so soft.
JACK(RADIO): Baker
this is Jack. I want you to get hold of CTU. I want a list of every mosque in a
15-mile radius.
BAKER(RADIO):
Mosques?
JACK(RADIO): They
were talking about prayer before Ali left. The time fits.
BAKER(RADIO): Roger
that.
KATE: Did that
help?
JACK: Yes. Yes I
think it did.
KATE: Okay.
JACK: Kate, the
normal protocol would be to transfer you back to CTU for further debriefing. But
the truth is; I don’t know what Syed Ali looks like. No one does, except for
you. I need you to identify him for me.
---
[Stanton’s phone
rings.]
STANTON
